Holland vs. Yankees
TIME/TV: 8:05 p.m., YES Network and MLB Network
WEATHER: Another warm night here in Texas. Ivan Nova said before the game that he loved pitching last night. Felt much more like being home for him.
UMPIRES: HP Jim Reynolds, 1B Mike DiMuro, 2B Andy Fletcher, 3B Tim Welke
RANGERS MAKE A MOVE: With Nelson Cruz going on the disabled list, the Rangers have called up Triple-A outfielder Craig Gentry. He stole 49 bases back in 2009 and has a little bit of big league time the past two seasons. Only hitting .239 in Triple-A this year.
MO AND NO(VA): According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Ivan Nova’s win last night made him the second Yankees rookie in the past 25 years to get a win while holding an opponent to just two hits and no earned runs through 7-plus innings on the road. The last rookie starter to do it… Mariano Rivera on July 4, 1995 in Chicago.
BACK AT SHORTSTOP: Last night was Derek Jeter’s 2,323rd game, tying Charlie Gehringer for the 20th most games among players who played their entire careers with one team. It was his 2,302nd game at shortstop, tying Cal Ripken for the most games as the shortstop of one team (that’s from Elias). The only players who have played more games at shortstop in their career are Omar Vizquel (2,692), Luis Aparicio (2,583) and Ozzie Smith (2,511).
UPDATE, 8:17 p.m.: That’s Michael Young’s second home run of the season, enough for a 1-0 Rangers lead in the first inning.
UPDATE, 8:28 p.m.: Second inning, second home run for the Rangers. David Murphy just hit his third of the season, a leadoff shot for a 2-0 Texas lead.
UPDATE, 8:34 p.m.: Well this is something new, Colon looks pretty rocky so far. He’s given up three runs in the second inning with only one out.
UPDATE, 8:42 p.m.: Good relay throw from Cano and a bad bit of base running by Aybar helps Colon get out of the second inning, but it’s already 5-0 Rangers. Not a great start from a guy who the Yankees had already come to trust.
UPDATE, 8:56 p.m.: Little two-out rally has put the Yankees on the board, and Derek Jeter’s the only guy who hit a ball hard in the process. Jeter’s double off the wall, Granderson’s walk and Teixeira’s bloop RBI single have made the score 5-1 in the third. It was Jeter’s third double of the season.
UPDATE, 9:01 p.m.: When Alex Rodriguez walked and Robinson Cano came to the plate, I turned to Pete Caldera and said, “Is this the guy you want to face with the bases loaded?” The answer was, no. Cano tripled to the wall, emptying the bases and pulling the Yankees within 5-4. If Colon can find himself during this extended break, the Yankees are very much back in this one.
UPDATE, 9:07 p.m.: Ugly swing and miss from Andruw Jones brings an end to the third inning, only after a four-run, two-out rally that left Holland yelling at himself as he walked off the field. He threw 45 pitches that inning.
UPDATE, 9:56 p.m.: Nice catch by Swisher helped the Yankees get out of the fifth, now he’s gone deep to tie the game in the sixth. That’s his second home run of the season, and it’s a pretty big one.
UPDATE, 10:04 p.m.: Brett Gardner has come in to play left field. Could be a regular upgrade. Could be that something’s wrong with Jones. Not sure at the moment.
UPDATE, 10:09 p.m.: Logan got the Yankees out of the fifth, but he couldn’t retire the first two lefties he faced in the sixth, and a suicide squeeze has given the Rangers a 6-5 lead.

go yankees
Win tonight and win the series
I want nothing more than to get some pizza & beer and watch this game with a buddy but I’m being forced at gunpoint to go to an in-law family thing.
Marriage….think it over single men.
Go Colon. Go Yanks.
over under on the first Nolan Ryan shot. 8:30
One of our bottom-feeding division foes, the Red Sox has won today. The other two losing clubs, the Orioals and the Blue Jays, have done what they more often do: lose.
Those pesky Rays won again.
That’s your AL East update. Go Yankees.

why do they boo tex? they traded him
gotta love a crowd that cheers when their pitcher throws at some guys head. stay classy
Teix is going to hurt somebody….
why do they boo tex? they traded him

because he wouldnt sign an extension with them which is why they traded him I guess?
Good thing Tex got a hit after that pitch. Considering how good Holland’s control is that pitch wasn’t cool and wasn’t necessary.

Best post of the day, by far
Oh my, a rod is ice cold
It seems like the Rangers “fans” care more about the Yanks than their own team
Colon!
The right handed hitters should start looking inside with 2 strikes
What happened to David Cone? He has aged 15 yrs. in the last 2 yrs. I love the guy and he adds a lot to the Broadcast with ” Mr Redundant.”
Did Cone just drop a reference to pitch FX data?
nice play Cano
Did Cone just drop a reference to pitch FX data?
–
David Cone loves that stuff, he brought it up in 09 alot.
If the ump is going to call that inside off the plate a strike then it’s going to be a long night.
A perfect game pitching badass like David Cone giving some dap to fangraphs and pitchfx lends them some credence
Osama bin Laden: Sabermetrician?
“Courtesy of the UK’s Daily Mail, Osama bin Laden’s wife revealed to Pakistani investigators that the al-Qaeda leader, who Navy SEALs killed while he was dressed in pajamas, had not left their shared room in five years. OK, so Osama wasn’t living in his mother’s basement, but otherwise he was a near-perfect fit for the sabermetrician stereotype.
Left unclear from the article is whether he had ghostwritten blog posts for Fangraphs and tried to get one of his sons a summer internship in the A’s front office.”
If Colon is going to throw all fastballs against this team then he must locate otherwise they will kill you
eek almost clean inning
Coney is a saber guru. He loves that stuff…… Young really lives for the days against us…..
Blast from the past Michael Young takes Bartolo Colon deep.
Kill heat
Young is getting up there in age and he seems to have no problem hitting so that should give Jeter and Posada some hope.
this ump is all over the place
Denny’s?
It’s going to be a tough night if that is called a strike
We’re getting beat by a guy that eats at Dennys
I heard Bin Laden was a Red Sox fan and for 5 yrs. he never missed a game. Jerry Remy was his favorite announcer and Pedroia his favorite player.
Quick couple of comments about Gardner bunting (to follow up from prior thread):
1. I have noi problem with Gardner bunting alot as long as he confines it to batting practice
2. In the sacrifice last night, a player who sees the rotation on has to be smart enough to swing to play pepper and send the ball up the middle. That is Gardner’s fault
3. After watching that sacrifice play again, the fault for the out goes mainly to Jorge Posada exhibiting his usual terrible baserunning. When the SS is cheating for a rotation play, Posada has to extend his lead to keep pace with the SS. The 2B was covering first, and there was no one keeping him close, but he did not extend his lead.
4. As mentioned last night, the second bunt was Gardner’s idea, but they are teaching him to bunt by squaring up. His technique sucks…pocket that concept until you learn to do it right. Study tapes of Vic Davillio, Rod Carew, Brett Butler and others.
That is all.
hope the Yanks hit tonight
If he’d switch to Perkins he might meet Tiger Woods.
So is Holland getting both the inside and outside corner?

That would explain his anger at the world and hatred of NYC
Should have DL/d A-Rod.
not kewl….c’mon Colon
Belt high, got to get it down.
You can’t pitch against this team just throwing fastballs. Colon won’t last long if he doesn’t mix in other pitches in.

Unless its a team full of Jeters
I wish we had Murphy just so he wouldn’t play against us. What are his career stats batting against us? This could get ugly early…
2 run lead won’t last tonight
That was right down the middle
c’mon Colon please don’t let this inning get away from you. Leave it at 2-0
I am glad Holland’s strike zone is gigantic…Colon better find himself quickly…
….or not. Hope the Yanks are up for a slug fest
Colon has batting practice. Girardi should just leave him out there instead of killing the bullpen
Colon can throw 100$ fastballs if he has command, movement, and location. Obviously, he doesn’t have that early.
But all things considered, if Colon gives us great games 66% of time, then he is going to have a clunker every so often. No big deal
Can’t expect the pitching, especially guys like Garcia and Colon, to be perfect every time. Offense needs to backup Colon who has certainly done a lot for them
Kills me how the Yanks swing through and take fastballs down the middle.
Besides Grandy of course.
Texas is a horrible matchup for Colon.
He attacks hitters with fastballs, and more fastballs, and all Texas does is crush fastballs.
They are terrible with offspeed stuff.
The way the Yankees offense looks tonight this game is pretty much over.
Colon has nothing so far. A slow non-moving fastball and no breaking pitch
There’s always tomorrow.
Was Kinsler just tipping his hat to the crowd? Between that and the antler crap this team is very immature.
Time to bring in the secret weapon–Buddy Carylisle (sp?)
yeah i can’t me too mad at Colon the Yanks need to start scoring more runs. Also our starting pitching has been so good lately. They are due for a game where the offense picks them up
You can’t expect to pick up pitchers off the scrap heap like Garcia and Colon and expect them to be Cy Young caliber forever.
If the offense can’t wake up, they’ll be out of first place by next week.
Colon has been great so a game like this was coming. With the way this offense is hitting I doubt they can overcome a start like this. Oh well CC is on the mound tomorrow.
If this continues, I might do something more enjoyable–like give myself a few root canals.
Well that was luck, but, what an ugly inning.
This ump’s strike zone is all over the place. I think he had a couple of beers before the game.
Celtics vs. Heat starting to look good…
Maybe this is one of those barn burners where the final score is like 8 – 7
Lets get some runs
Looks like I picked a bad night to give up sniffing glue.
Martin is the new Jeter with all of these DP’s
they’re becoming the NY Jeters with these dps
This game has a stench to it. A real stinker. As soon as YankeesNmore comes on I’m out of here.
Wow the best ball Jeter has ever hit this year
XBH
looks like jeter can still elevate a ball
was that soft…anyone????
This team is full of Rally killers.
Was that Derek Jeter?
Holy crap. I think Jeter hit that ball harder than every other ball he has hit this year combined.
The Rays are lurking and could be in 1st place before the night is over. Who would have figured ?
Saw that too, Kinsler tipped his cap after sac fly….what a dork
swing from your heels, Tex, we need runs.

If you have been watching this team every game, like most of us here have, it’s not shocking.
Good at bat by Granderson. Let’s go Tex!!
Time for a Text msg
Washington probably said, pitch around Tex, and pitch to A-Rod.
Holland has lost the plate, maybe Tex 3-run HR
The Yankees are on pace to ground into 200 double plays this season
The MLB is 174.
Even if the Yankees lost tonight they’d still have a superior win pct vs the Rays
MLB *record*
I will take it!!!! Now A-rod it’s time for a big hit, you are LONG overdue
A-rod has had 2 really good swings this game
Missed a hanger.
Time to bunt?
Let’s go Cano!
Cano can hit this guy
we have got to get a big hit in this situation. Please tell me Robbie Cano that you can get a 2 out base hit. That will put us back in the game
Ca-YES
Barn burner

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE YOU MUCHO CANO!!!!!!!!!!!!
With his speed, Cano can have an inside the park double…but fortunately he got a triple!
Nice,
robbie cano don’t you know
best second basemen in the bigs
Thank you lord
Pretty funny.
If Cano makes an out there, half the board freaks out about Cano swinging at the first pitch in that situation.
Come on Swish! Keep the line moving!
at least Cano can get it done! Huge two-out hit. Maybe Swish ties it up????? Maybe
ROBBIE CANO IS MY HERO!!!

That’s not meat.
I would much prefer seeing Eduardo Nunez as our RH OFer
welp at least the stars did their job this inning…and who started the rally people??? Derek Jeter. Thank You
Now Colon has to try and hold them here
Gardner would have bunted for a triple.
Gardner gets that
Gardner catches that.
Gardner would have caught that ball…or at least bunted it.
Murphy that drunken Irishman always kills us.
Jones is awful in LF. He had a couple of great years…probably with some assistance but I think he is done. I would rather see Gardner against lefties or someone from AAA.
The Yankees could really use Gardner out in LF with the way Colon is allowing fly balls all over the park tonight.
Kind of a nonchalant effort there by Jones.
Even Nunez catches that ball…probably hits better too
If Jones isn’t going to hit and it seems like he won’t you can’t have his defense in the field. It’s like having Thames out there.
After complaining about how boring this offense has been.. what a great inning ! For sure it was a confidence builder for me to believe in them.. but more importantly, a confidence builder for the Yankees!!! This is the type of game, come back that gets your bats out of a slump!!!
It all started with Jeter !!! I was really hoping he got all of it.. either way, Jeter looks like he’s following the ball good tonight.. I haven’t seen him swing with that type of authority all year.. so another positive tonight.. !!
The last positive.. I like seeing colon excited and ready to get out there and keep the team in it.. I don’t know if BC will pitch this good all season.. but I like his attitude.
Nasty pitch.
Way to close it out
Nice pitch by Colon
P May 7th, 2011 at 9:16 pm
______
The warm weather effect
Movement was much better that inning. Nice job Colon. Now let’s knock this kid out of the game!
Things were a bit bleak the first two innings but now I see some clear skies in the future. Somebody once said that’s why they play 9 innings and it’s not over till its over.
If Yankees play in warm weather thru rest of May, we’ll get a real idea of where Jeter, Posada, and others are.
Take pitches!!!
Man this ump is all over the place.
Another walk! Good eye JoPo!
Make this guy throw strikes..he can’t!
Please no GIDP.
I can’t handle another GIDP.
Tomko has some ridiculously hot wife, I think.
Washington with the quick hook. Girardi would of waited until he loads the bases again to take him out.
There will be an explosion of rage if we don’t beat up on Tomko.
Get out the 3 woods and drivers gentlemen…
Never could figure out why Tomko ended up a bust. Great arm, high draft, but, never could connecy for an extended period of time.
Tomko has a bit of a grudge against Cashman & Co. He felt slighted when he was DFA’d.

i swear…i am sick of these damn double plays. For real, its ridiculous

My gf told me Gaudin’s wife was on those wedding planning shows and CC’s wife was bossing her around telling her what to do and pick out the whole time.
I thought that was Erin Robertson?
Colon looking really good now. Keep it up!
Martin is a line drive groundball hitter, probably should put someone with some speed before him.
Gardner would have had that.
Wow, nice job by lohud to stay positive about Colon. Very impressive. I absolutely expected the opposite.
Kudos!
Here is where we take the lead!
Hi Trisha! Hang around!
Gaudin’s wife, gf at the time was on the show with CC’s wife and AJ’s wife. She is very pretty. They were picking out her wedding dress with her.
GB….Didn’t Tomko come up with The Reds back in the early 90″s ????/ He’s been so many clubs I lost track
That walk to Arencibia came on a 12 pitch at bat.
Way to work the count CG! Make these guys throw strikes!

You would have to think the Yanks can hit Tomko here
Let’s go Tex…No more DP’s.
Pat, can’t remember if it was the Reds or Padres, but, thought he was the first pick or first pitcher taken.
Would love to see a Damon Dash here….

97 not quite early 90s but the reds!
LGY
That is the point of the show I think lol
Say yes to the dress.
The strike zone for the Rangers is gigantic
So much for a Damon Demonic Dash….
Pat, it was Cinncy, but was a 2nd round pick
Have to score off this scrub
Here is where Cano does damage.
Damn, ARod is a big hole in the 4 spt, we desperately need him to heat up
It would be nice to see Arod hit a fastball hard. They are coming right after him.
ARod is off balance, lunging
boooo
DRAT!
WTF, Tomko sucks.
Aw Robbie. That wasn’t it.
Stranded at 1st by 3 4 5 hitters
Wow ARod looks horrible – scrubs blowing fast balls by him with regularity. I wonder if I stint on the DL with the Oblique wouldn’t have been a bad idea
Granderson is our best player.
This team is in trouble.
I hope everyone makes sure to vote for CG for ASG
Patience is what we need. Tomko has stretches of wildness and he will not get the close calls. Tomko’s wife is HOT……..
Arod should probably sit out tomorrow’s game. If he is healthy work with Long and if not then just rest. His issues look to be more than just a slump.
Is he really throwing 95 mph?
GB / Face….Thanks…I thought he came up before the strike…..
Gardner would have held that to a single
It’s obvious that Young can hit a fastball
ugh c’mon we need outs
all of a sudden joe has a quick pull?
Am I dreaming?
Girardi pulling a starter BEFORE the game gets out of hand???
guess it makes sense, since murphy has hammered him tonight….
I like Bartolo, win or lose, he’s a pro..
Bojy, just saw your post. I am actually in the middle of a few projects and also chatting elsewhere. But a lot of my heart is still with some of the posters here, so I do check in now and then.
Keep ‘em positive!
Good move by Girardi taking Colon out before it gets ugly. Logan hasn’t been great this year but Colon is getting the ball up and over all too many fastballs.
“I like Bartolo, win or lose, he’s a pro..”
Very nice. I definitely agree.
Bartolo did a professional job…didn’t have his best stuff…but battled and kept us close
Not a bad call here. Colon is just throwing BP fastballs at this point. Seeing that the 3-4-5 hitters can’t do anything against Brett Tomko, every run is important.
Great jump.
Does Murphy hit .900 against the Yanks? It sure seems like it.
Gardner would have had that ball
thanks Swish thought that was a double for sure
Jones would still be chasing that ball Swish caught
No tacos for you!!
“Gardner would have had that ball”
It’s long past time that people started to appreciate him. But better late than never.
Good job by Logan
Boone Logan is a god
ok, just really lucky
but still a god
Never seen Swish run that fast
For arguably the greatest defensive OFer in baseball history, Jones has been a tremendous disappointment in limited duty. I accept that he has lost a lot of his speed, but he seems to get poor reads and jumps, and doesn’t seem to hustle at all. I am getting fed up with him.
Now it’s time to put some runs on the board against the scrub Tomko
Good posters tonight —–Its reminiscent of nights in the past.
Come on Swish. Just stay alive.
Hmmm…Gamecast has Tomko pitching to Cano…nice trick.
YES!
Swishaaaaaaaa
Swisher crushed that. ALLLL the way back.
there you go….
swish was due to catch up with a fastball.
Pat M., what do you think? Is it time to pull the plug on Jones? He seems to have lost interest over the last few weeks….especially on defense. There were two flies tonight that he gave up on without an effort.
Go Swish!! After that nice catch a homerun
#pumpsfist
Or do that! Swish!! “How many time do we see it? Great D…”
Atta boy saint Nick!
Swishalicous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a good inning for him offense and defense
Why does John Sterling keep calling it the “Tiger Stadium Upper Deck?” Very weird….

He hasn’t really provided at the plate, and his work in the field is … disappointing. I like that word. I thought he’d be able to handle LF and RF with ease and even be able to move over to CF on occasion but I wouldn’t trust him out there.
wallacematthews Wallace Matthews
Most pitcher put on an icepack after their done. Colon puts on a feedbag
Wow…. what a jackass. Can anyone be a professional anymore instead of insulting others behind their backs and being hacky comedians?
It’s embarrassing.
poor Swish looks like he is dying on the bench
Contribute, Andruw.
Pinch hit with Gardy?
Some player should lay Matthews out.
Chase: If that’s a cut/paste, then he can’t even use the right word. Their/they’re. Seems like a “writer” should know that…
That is twice that Sterling has called the stands the “Tiger Styadium Upper Deck.” I wonder if he is slowly losing his wits…it happens to all of us eventually.
matthews is a hack.
why bother repeating anything he says?
I think it’s time to get rid of Jones. He is awful in the outfield and I don’t think he has anything left. The Yanks will probably give him another 2 weeks or so.
Sterling also called it the Fenway park scoreboard earlier in the game.
BoJo: I think he lost it a while ago. I enjoy his broadcasts, but some of the calls are… quizzical…
It’s a copy paste, Other Phil.
Andruw Jones = Randy Winn. Time for him to go.
Arthur Rhodes lol
JF–I’m deadly serious when I suggest making Eduardo Nunez the 4th OFer….I think he would bring a better bat, speed, and hustle to the role that Jones doesn’t provide. I think he is a better option than any of the AAA kids….and can also spell ARod at third (like Bautista can play OF and 3B). It would give him more ABs and hasten his development too.
GB…….Andruw Jones ???? He’s the only power bat off the bench now with Chavez on the DL……And Montero isn’t an option at this time…..A week ago I thought that The Yanks bench was the best in the game….Jones just doesn’t pickup the ball off the bat very well anymore….
Cc, I agree, can’t stand watching Jones
The Other Phil May 7th, 2011 at 10:00 pm

Sad that noi one is helping him by correcting him…he would thank them and not blow a gasket.
I hope Girardi brings in Gardner for defense in LF after this inning
That’s because that’s the way the ball park was built…with the old Tiger Stadium and Yankee Stadium in mind. Along with the verandas of the old New Orleans French Quarter.
Matthews also refers to A-Rod as “NewCaptain” now.
Niblink……You’re always calling for guys to get cut, do you think about who’s going to replace them……At your rate half of the clubs players have been wacked
Try this…release Jones…move Nunez to 4th OFer/3B, and bring up Montero for BUDH/BUC
matthews also said that swish hit that homerun off of rhodes, so he may not even be paying attention.

If you think Andruw Jones has lost interest, he lost it long before joining the Yankees. He developed “Mannyitis” upon joining the Dodgers.

1 run against Tomko and Rhodes tells you all you need to know about how the Yanks are hitting right now. Tex and Arod have left 1 million guys on base in the last 2 weeks and Cano just keeps on picking them up.

GB…….Andruw Jones ???? He’s the only power bat off the bench now with Chavez on the DL……And Montero isn’t an option at this time…..A week ago I thought that The Yanks bench was the best in the game….Jones just doesn’t pickup the ball off the bat very well anymore….
———————————————————————————————————————-
Pat, Strikeouts aside…I’d rather go with Justin Maxwell at Scranton at all three outfield spots. He offers speed, defense and some power. He’d also offer more effort.
Logan gets hit really hard.
Captain Clutch May 7th, 2011 at 10:02 pm
I hope Girardi brings in Gardner for defense in LF after this inning
________
Good call
lol i guess Joe wants to win…putting Gardy in for D-fence
Boone Logan is really inconsistent this year. They need him to get back to 2nd half Logan.
Here we go with Logan
Logan sucks, yeah.
Seriously, pull him.
Gardner would have caught th–uh…never mind
Good grief. Logan is getting tattooed out there. Every ball hit is a rocket.
logan has been fine the last couple weeks
Logan still has yet to get back the 2 mph he found on his fastball last year.
bring in robertson…
gosh i really wish we could keep this game tied!!!
Wow..Gamecast has Martin pitching agaist Davis…must be a full moon tonight
Logan’s slider really blows.
I agree…but do they actually call it that?
———————————————————————————————————————-
Yeah, they do alomg with “The Facade”.
Logan gets hit hard all the time. Another mistake by Girardi to overexpose him. Just awful after a great comeback.
Great 0-2 pitch. If Feliciano was healthy Logan would be in AAA. He has been awful.
I would bring in DRob for better glove…look for squeeze
I’m putting Wallace in the Pete Abraham category. Assholes that can’t spell.
i know Boone has been fine lately, but what is really the point in him being on the team if he can’t get lefties out. Like really, it’s his only job
Very impressive work by Logan so far. Has hitters completely fooled. Totally understand why Girardi sticks with him here.
Get Logan out of this game. 2 hits to 2 lefties and Girardi leaves him out there..unreal.
squeeze

Thx! Learned something new today…always appreciate that.
unless feliciano gets back, there are not many lefty options for us…
GB……Maxwell might be the best all around option if Cashman does rethink Anruw Jones…I think he needs more playing time….
Didn’t pitch him like he expected the bunt.
You knew that was coming. Washington does it every single time.

Soriano, Robertson, and Mo all handle lefties. Joba also has a neutral split.

________
Great play when you have players who can execute it.
Terrible to lose a game you’ve fought back from a 5-run deficit in because the manager leaves in a LOOGY who has gotten hit hard by every batter he’s faced.
Managers are way too enamored with handedness, when they should concentrate more on ability.
Logan has to go. One job. Get leftys. Good thing cash brought in another lefty
Too bad Gardner would never be able to do that
Washington out manages Clueless everytime

_______
Maxwell hasn’t shown he can hit for average. Nunez has….both can run, have great arms…Nunez played a lot of OF in Dominican leagues while growing up.
I like what he can bring–like Danny Tartabull, BJ Upton, and Bobby Murcer.
Gardner can do that. He just can’t place a bunt well, which is irrelevant with a squeeze.
Captain Clutch May 7th, 2011 at 10:13 pm
Too bad Gardner would never be able to do that
_______
Pena and Cervelli can
Pat – stop making things up. To the contrary I continually argue against those who want to dump Jorge, Jeter, Phil et al. If you don’t realize that Jones can’t contribute, then maybe you should start watching football.

Parraz at Scranton is hitting better, but, no experience. He, too can play all three spots, not the kind of speed and power Maxwell has to offer, but, doesn’t strikeout as much. The other hitter is Dickerson. Not big power but good speed and can play the three outfields pretty well. Golson is om the DL.
There is no reason to ever use Logan since Robertson can get lefties out
Terrible to lose a game you’ve fought back from a 5-run deficit in because the manager leaves in a LOOGY who has gotten hit hard by every batter he’s faced.

Last time I checked, it was kinda still the 6th inning
Who wants to dump Phil?
Rich in NJ May 7th, 2011 at 10:14 pm
Gardner can do that. He just can’t place a bunt well, which is irrelevant with a squeeze.
______
Good point
Maxwell is striking out 37% of the time in AAA.
Robertson hasn’t pitched in awhile and he is probably too strong
Come on, DRob.
Great Babe Young is up to bat.
DRob seems to get serious only when it gets dangerous.
There is nothing about Nunez that compares him to neither Upton, Tartabull nor Murcer.
Walks will always be what keeps Robertson from being a great relief pitcher, which is a shame.
I hate Michael Young, he isn’t even that good!
Walking andrus was sindul
This is the guy they were trying to get rid of this spring? Sheesh!

sigh….might be the game freaking M. Young
How does Michael Young do it against the Yankees?
It’s ridiculous
without him, Murphy, or Cruz, I swear the Rangers wouldn’t score any runs
GreenBeret7 May 7th, 2011 at 10:19 pm
There is nothing about Nunez that compares him to neither Upton, Tartabull nor Murcer.
_______
Look at them early in careers…skinny kids with speed and good arms….good offense…too eratic at infield position.
IMO he compares very well. He has excellent speed to paly OF, a 70/80 arm for RF, good average potential, and I expect he would grow into a power bat as he matures and gains weight (like Murcer and Tartabull did).
Not a good bullpen tonight. Robertson untrustworthy.
Who didn’t see that coming?
This is pathetic. Tomko and Rhodes can get people out but Logan and Robertson can’t. That pitch was right down the middle but they have to pitch Young inside I don’t know why they always pitch him away.
Anyway, Andruw Jones will likely keep his job because there are no good alternatives, but I would play Gardner more v. LHP.
The Yankees will come back.
–
8-7! Book it, its a barn burner
Yankee Hits: 5
Michael Young Hits: 4
Awesome.
Ahhh, darren oliver is a sight for sore eyes.
Odd change. 41 year old lefty for a 41 year old lefty after 6 pitches.
Can’t walk a weak hitter like Andrus. Just unforgivable. More poor pitching by the bullpen, which was supposed to be a strength.
Hope C.C. can can do deep in the game tomorrow.
I knew that the defeicit wouldn’t be kept at just one run….
it seems like when 1 member of the pen struggles, everyone does afterwards.
dont look now, but jeter is hitting the ball hard.
there is Jeter starting rally #2
Jeter is on fire tonight
JF
10-9
Bullpen hasn’t been good tonight, but team has only 5 friggen hits!
Come one Grandy! Let’s get it back!
They don’t even have Cruz or Hamilton
Tying Wee WIllie Keeler…wow
mL OPS:
Tartabull: .888
Upton: .850
Murcer: .773
Nunez: .687
Sorry, BoJo, I don’t see the comparison.
This is Jeter’s best offensive game all season.
once jeter passes .270 that he hit last year, i will start to get excited…
D-Rob hadn’t pitched since May 3rd; Girardi underrates and underuses him. D-Rob has always been able to get lefties out.
Grandy is seeing this guy well
Ethier’s streak is over.

He used him a lot to begin the season!
the inability to get the ball up with runner on first is getting real frustrating.
Umpires save the yankees from their third DP
i thought that was through.
tex was out, but we’ll take it
When Tex is struggling he always swings at the 1st pitch. He and Arod are killing them for the last 2 weeks or so.
That should have been another DP. Tex was out.
This unbelievable.
BoJo
Their mL body of work. We really don’t know if Nunez can hit enough to be a regular SS. To then project him as a SLB OF is really a leap.
Damn, when is ARod gonna square one up???
unreal….
alex is not even close to right.
SLB = SLG
A-Rod just sucks man.
Clearly not using his lower half.
i think tex and alex have had something like 2 rbis in the last two weeks combined.
Ever since his injury Alex either gets under the ball and hits a weak pop up or gets on top of the ball and grounds it to the 3B.
It’s hard to win games when your 3rd and 4th hitters are automatic outs. Arod looks absolutely dreadful.
I have to believe that A-Rod isn’t healthy.

Yes…granted…but I am depending more on gut feel…which has served me well in past. I think he has good bat speed and adjusts well at plate, and has upward potential. He currently weighs 155Lbs, but will someday be 185 with muscle.
Better hope its an injury with A-Rod, because the alternative is that he’s about to begin a massive decline phase at an age when most players do so.

NO way, they are just struggling real bad right now…
Pay attention, Joe.
Better hope its an injury with A-Rod, because the alternative is that he’s about to begin a massive decline phase at an age when most players do so.
___
he was hitting .400 2 weeks ago.
i dont think he just all of a sudden let age beat him.
Sterling talking about how Dodgers might not make payroll. Shows how much McCourt was stealing asset value to line his own pockets.
Arod shouldn’t be playing. It’s obvious he isn’t 100% and he looks like garbage. I wish they would bat Cano 3rd until Tex and Arod wake up. Knowing Tex that probably won’t be until June.
Great stab.
Murphy and Moreland may never become outstanding hitters, but, they are a real pain and can do a lot of damage.
Ethier hitting streak snapped!
i agree about cano third.
shouldnt the hitter with the best average be hitting third?
i always thought that was how teams usually did it.
Interesting thing that may decide the McCourt Dodgers issue is how the IRS rules when it looks at their books. I suspect there is some fudging going on there….a crook is a crook
Alex is hitting .181 with 3 XBH in 61 PAs since his injury
It doesn’t seem that long ago that when the starter was being replaced he stayed on the mound until the reliever arrived and then he and his manager walked back together….Unless he was for hunger that day he’d leave for the showers right away…….I need Jeter to get north of the .270 Jeter line or it’s going to cost me some coins….
when is Joe gonna wake the F up and realize Tex does not belong in the 3 hole??? Enough already with this weak manager afraid to hurt feelings.. Cano should be batting 3rd without question.. i dont care about b2b lefties with Grandy 2 hole.. Joe is a friggin idiot and he costs us many games already this year.
no compaddion from me for JG anymore.. the faster hes out of town the happier ill be. Give Pena a shot, cant be worse than this clown!
typos cause im on mobile , sorry.
If you need a LHB out, summon Robertson. Logan should be lumped with Carlisle for low leverage situations only.
P, and if Joe is so insistent on not having b2b lefties, put swish 2nd and grandy behind tex and alex. i mean he is good protection with 10 homeruns.
time to start looking at bad teams to see who may be available….
one of those crappy teams must have a lefty we can take.
Cano is not getting on base enough to hit 3rd.
I come back to the point that it would really help Joe to get a strategic offensive coordinator to advise him…like Zim used to advise Torre. Girardi is good at handling a pitching staff, but kinda weak handling an offense.
arod is terrible.. shoulda went on the DL .. hes trying real hard to get it goin, but hes not helpin at all. such a shame too with his incredible start..
this offense had 1 good inning.. thats all they r goid fir each game!
love the 1 pitch 1 out fron this team!!!!!!! take a damn pitch!!!
good point lgy.
tex’s obp is 50 points higher.
Cano has had 29 PAs this season with RISP.
Tex has had 22.
Wow…Gamecast has Gardner hitting is Swish’s spot and Jones following…Really weird stuff this evening
Do we really need to look at Nolan Ryan’s fat head every 30 seconds???
Who wants to bet that Gardy bunts?
It’s unreal to think what Cano’s numbers could be if he had more patience and didn’t waste some at bats.
In at the corners, time to swing away
Granderson is our best hitter – he should be hitting cleanup.
Managers are too robotic these days having ‘set’ lineups. Not like the old days where managers would ride the hot hand and shuffle lineups based on how the hitters are performing at the present time. If we had Earl Weaver managing the lineup would be Gardner-Swisher-Martin-Grandy-Cano-Tex-ARod-Posada-Jeter.
Threat of the bunt has worked to perfection drawing the defense in. Now do the thing that beats that
and tex is gettin on base enough to hit 3rd????
bottom line Tex is not Tex of ’09 he wasnt in ’10 and hes not in ’11.. June is coming fast and its time to make changes!!!
Alex has had 30 PAs with RISP this season despite only playing 27 games.
If you want Cano moved up in the lineup all this stuff should be directed at Alex, not Tex.
You guys want Cano in the cleanup spot, not the 3 hole.
and tex is gettin on base enough to hit 3rd????

and tex is gettin on base enough to hit 3rd????

Uhhh. Yeah.
.385 OBP dude.
BTW Rich and GB7–When I talk about Nunez, I am talking about projecting him as a serviceable 4th OFer/RH bat. Anything more would be gravy, but I think he is the best of our options for replacing Jones. That was my point. I suspect my clustering him with the others may have given the impression that I expect him to be a superstar. That was not my point…but was probably unclear.
This team can’t hit. Hr or bust
i also was excited about A Jones.. he is such a halfass player.. no hustle just smiles.. i wanna knock that smile off his face!
ughh sorry guys, im obviously frustrated tonight.

Joba for the vulture win?
I want to see him hit 100 mph in this heat
Boo Logan in line to get the loss..
yex shpuld not b hitting 3rd!!! Cabo’s on base would go up i bet too.. either way move tex period!
the 3 spot is for hitters not out makers that occasionally walk.
All things said, it has been an entertaining game. Road wins are hard to come by. Our # 1 pitches tomorrow and we will walk out with a series win.
Could someone here announce what speed Joba is hitting? Sterling doesn’t mention it.
They only have 6 hits tonight. With so many guys in the lineup ice cold it’s hard to get back to back hits and score runs. I wonder how long Posada’s leash is?! That is one spot that they have an answer for if they want to use it.
yex shpuld not b hitting 3rd!!! Cabo’s on base would go up i bet too.. either way move tex period!

How exactly would Cano’s on base go up?
He has turned into Vlad Guerrero this season. His plate discipline has been awful as he is swinging at everything.
He has THREE friggin walks all season. 3.
ace i said that last year and got reamed for it
we got one at first and now they did.
we did nothing about it, but they probably will.
the 3 spot is for hitters not out makers that occasionally walk.
——————-
This doesn’t make any sense.
Tex has made way less outs than Cano this season.
His on base is 65 points higher.
Texas will be running here..if history is any indication
If there is an offensive flaw on this team, it’s not hits v. HR, it’s how much they rely on Alex to be Alex.
the rangers fans are getting a bit restless…
Has Joba hit 100 mph on his throws to first yet?
Game is over Joba just pitch damn.
ur makin this about cano when its about tex..
cano can only go up from his 3 walks.. not like tex is contributing n e way.. put martin 3 .. try sonething!!!!!
A vulture win is when you blow another pitcher’s win and get the win yourself…like Phil Regan or Tyler Clippard, not when you come into a losing game and your team takes the win.
Nice Joba

Tex makes less outs than Cano. Why wouldn’t Tex’s hits go up??? They go up every year as the summmer comes.
They can do this.
maybe granderson 3rd then…
one day they should just come out with some ridiculous lineup just for fun.
ur makin this about cano when its about tex..

This Tex stuff is so dumb.
Mark Teixiera has been a BETTER offensive player than Robinson Cano this season.
It is amazing how many dumb posts have been written about how great Cano has been this season and how bad Tex has been.
Tex has been better.
Moving Cano to the 3 hole does nothing. It will give him less opportunities with RISP than he has in the 5 hole.
Alex in the cleanup spot is the problem right now. NOT Tex in the 3 hole.
“it’s how much they rely on Alex to be Alex.”
———
If Tex was actually hitting then Arod slumping for 2 weeks wouldn’t really be a big deal. But considering the fat that Tex doesn’t hit until June every year it doesn’t help. It always put so much pressure on the #2 and #4 hitters because he does nothing for 2 months.

In the last 30 days Tex is making less outs than Cano, but Cano is hitting the ball harder, ergo its better to have Cano come up after Tex because while he might make an out more often, he has a guys on base more often. LGY framed the debate well, replace Alex with Cano, not Tex. That does nothing.
Alex is killing rallies right now and needs to get back to his game.

When I make a point that is questioned by JF, Rich, LGY, GB7 or others, I value it as a chance to think more about the topic and possibly learn something. That is the most enjoyable aspect of this blog, and I try to contribute with similar questions to others when I am able.
Tex had an 0-15 stretch after his hot start…after that he is hitting .271 .402 .543 .945
Cano in the same time period: .291 .310 .557 .866
You can’t really selective endpoint this and call it a discussion.
