Let’s see if we can start tearing down the myth of the Royals offense this week…

  2. longtime May 10th, 2011 at 12:13 pm

with those three pitching matchups , 2 out 3 would be a disapointment .

  3. Shame Spencer May 10th, 2011 at 12:17 pm

I’m still really enjoying parts of the conversation from the last thread about removing the HRs from all our hitting statistics… SMH.

  4. Irreverent Discourse May 10th, 2011 at 12:17 pm

I do have this sinking feeling like Melky is going into beast mode for this series…

  5. I Like Inge May 10th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Bruce Chen and Kyle Davies…. Stat padding week for the hitters.

  6. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

im looking for a big ovation for the melkman tonight! the guy was the cf on a championship team and had some big hits that season! then an ofer and a bad route or two would be just fine by me…

  7. Joe from Long Island May 10th, 2011 at 12:21 pm

I’d be wary of Chen. He’s faced the Yanks before, and held his own if I recall correctly. Throws a lot of junk.

  8. Joe from Long Island May 10th, 2011 at 12:22 pm

YsGuy – that’s fine by me, salute Melky for past services, and then go for the ofer…….

How did I totally forget that we get to see Melky tonight? lol

  10. stuckey99 May 10th, 2011 at 12:29 pm

    Joe, you recall incorrectly.

He’s faced them 2 since 2008, to these results.

    vs. NYY 6.55 0 2 0 0 2 2 0 11.0 17 8 8 2 4 8 .362

  11. stuckey99 May 10th, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I trust MelkmanfromHotlanta is going to show up tonight to continue to brag about how much Cabrera is outperforming Gardner…

    Oh, wait…

  12. Irreverent Discourse May 10th, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Melky has been pretty hot lately, but his OBP is still atrocious.

  13. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 12:48 pm

yeah, he is productive but his obp has been terrible, not unlike the guy he replaced in cf. jd had some big hits but a 288 obp last i checked.

  14. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 12:54 pm

    melky’s obp is .305, damons is .285, garders is .337, grandy’s is .359.

  15. lounge lizard May 10th, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Melky is on pace for 195 hits, 100 RBI’s, 105 R batting second. He has more extra base hits (15) than Swisher and Gardner combined (12) and, OBP notwithstanding, a higher OPS than either. He would have come back more cheaply than Andruw Jones and been an excellent sign (as Alex urged Cashman based on offseason workouts).

  16. Joe from Long Island May 10th, 2011 at 12:55 pm

stuckey – glad I’m wrong on this one.

  17. Warning Track Power May 10th, 2011 at 12:56 pm

This upcoming series is a great time for the team to win 3 in a row.
The time to strike is right now. The pitching match-ups seems to be in the Yankees favor as well.

  18. Captain Clutch May 10th, 2011 at 1:01 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised if the offense struggles again in this series. They never hit well against scrubs that they should pound, it’s usually the opposite. Hey where is our friend cy young Bullington?

  19. Warning Track Power May 10th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

I am looking forward to seeing Jeter drive the ball hard to the opposite field vs the royals.
I think he’s turned a corner for the better. At least he’s convinced me.
Same goes for ARod. I believe ARod is going to have a huge series vs the royals.

  20. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

joel sherman bringing up the fact that the yankees passed on berkman’s $15M optioin for this year. ok, i get it, he’s doing well, but why bring it up if you are not going to say they should have signed him? i never saw sherman advocating the yankees picking up the $15M on him, in fact i think i remember sherman saying that berkman looked done. it was assumed by everybody that he wasnt worth it, so the point that they could have excersized thier option on him is moot.

    http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/.....h0ydMMMQhL

  21. stuckey99 May 10th, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Lounge, Cabrera’s OPS is a few points higher than Gardner’s at the moment, Gardner’s is rising and it’s May 10th, which is the point.

  22. Against All Odds May 10th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Sherman is a classic 2nd guess guy who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else

  23. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

dont know that melky would have wanted to come here to be a 4th OF. and signing players b/c other players push for it is probably not a good way to run a franchise. good for melky, i hope he has a great year but i dont expect him to keep it up, not do i expect the royals to go anywhere this year.

  24. Shame Spencer May 10th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

IIRC, Berkman was hitting the ball pretty well, but wasn’t the problem where to put him exactly? With Jorgie DHing full time and Tex at 1st, its hard to find a spot for him. He wanted to get more regular playing time, I believe.

  25. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

‘Bruce Chen and Kyle Davies…. Stat padding week for the hitters’.

    ================

I hope you are right, these type of SP’s seem to give the Yankees fits.

  26. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

the problem about the sherman piece is the angle. if you want to say, ‘hey, berkman is having a great year, who knew?’ or ‘i was as wrong as everybody else’ thats fine, but the slant is that the yankees f’ed up by letting him go, thats my objection.

  27. Jerkface May 10th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

I hope jeter hits 2 more bombs today given I’ll be in attendance. 1 bomb or less and I’m booing.

  28. lounge lizard May 10th, 2011 at 1:15 pm

I appreciate what Gardner has been able to do lately but, as he was piling up the walks and improving his stats, he was mostly dying on the bases. Cano has a lower OBP than Gardner. Which of the two has contrbiuted much more to actually scoring runs? Melky is having a year like Cano, except with a few less HRs. I think the Yankee offense could use that, rather than the “pass the baton” approach.

I thought that should be said on Melky’s first visit. Having said it, I root all ill to Melky and all that is well to ours.

  29. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 1:15 pm

    YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

A bunch of hogwash from him. Easy to say now, it’s not like everyone knew Berkman would drop 30 lbs, get in tip top shape and be an early season hitting machine.

  30. Niblick May 10th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

VY: You’re wrong. Davies has a lifetime 5.85 ERA against the Yankees; they’ve got a .982 OPS against him. That’s fits?

  31. Warning Track Power May 10th, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Good for Berkman. I’m happy the guy has found success with the cards.
There was no room for him on the Yankees this season.
So he did what was best for him.
I don’t feel like the Yankees missed a golden opportunity.

  32. Jerkface May 10th, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Didn’t davies give up 500 to arod?? I was in attendance for that !

  33. Joe from Long Island May 10th, 2011 at 1:21 pm

    jerkface, so was I.

  34. pat May 10th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

Melky isn’t about stats, he’s an intangibles player.

I know he has at least 1 walkoff this year and think it might be 2 already.

    I miss the Leche.

  35. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

    Nib:

Ok my meaning was they seem to struggle against the no name guys often coupled with the bats being quiet recently excluding the last game. A sweep would be great to dispel the present myth of the Royals hitting.

  36. Niblick May 10th, 2011 at 1:23 pm

And Chen has a career 6.71 ERA against the Yanks, with a .967 OPS.

Those are the kind of fits the Yanks like.

  37. Niblick May 10th, 2011 at 1:25 pm

VY: You may be right as a general proposition, but it’s more meaningful to look at their track record against particular pitchers, and in these two cases, it’s mighty good.

I’m not sure the Yanks will be able to “dispel the present myth” of KC’s offense. I’m just hoping for the starters to hold their own and let the batters do the rest.

  38. BoJo May 10th, 2011 at 1:26 pm

    YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

not do i expect the royals to go anywhere this year.
    _____
I really have to disagree on this point.

I’m pretty sure they’ll be going to Seattle, Chicago, Boston, and numerous other places.

  39. stuckey99 May 10th, 2011 at 1:28 pm

    Lounge,

Carbera’s currently higher slugging % is largely a product of his higher batting average. He and Gardner have the same number of HR’s. Cabrera has a few more doubles, but he also have over 50 more ABs.

When you have gap power and swing at everything, you’re going to have a higher doubles total.

Give it a month, see where they both are on Memorial day.

  40. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:30 pm

jf, go ahead and boo jeter as loud as you want, just wear a hardhat!

  41. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 1:31 pm

    Niblick May 10th, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Beat them up three times with the bats would be great to see. Once in awhile it is nice to sit back and relax instead of being on the edge of my seat. :-)

  42. BoJo May 10th, 2011 at 1:32 pm

I still think Bruce Chen is a good cheap fantasy league pick, and will post pretty good numbers in W-L this year.

  43. Warning Track Power May 10th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

interesting piece by Pabe about alfredo aceves and the balk in last night’s game. here’s a taste:

“The Yankees nontendered Aceves last December, in part, because he was somewhat of a pain in the posterior. He’s a quirky guy, quick to anger and not quite mindful that he has only parts of three seasons in the big leagues and isn’t an All-Star.”

Based on how many teams in the league ? I am in several leagues and can’t recall anyone having him yet.

  46. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:39 pm

wtp, has to be a big ovation. he was the cf on a championship team. doesnt matter if you loved him or were ambivalent, he deserves a big O. and im sure he’ll get it.

  47. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:42 pm

chen is owned in 7.6% of espn leagues and is ranked as #303 overall in yahoo. he might be worth a start vs. a weak hitting team in a big park, but even as well as he is doing, he’s not even a real option even in mixed leagues.

i only saw a few outs of this game last night and it happened to be the inning Ace pitched.
i saw the balk play and heard the ESPN broadcasters comment on the play.
i believe it was Sutcliffe that said Ace is doing what he does for show and for show only. he needs to get rid of that move right away.
Sutcliffe was direct and to the point.

  49. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:45 pm

might be worth it in deep or al only leagues, but the current espn owners seem to be saying, no way!

  50. 38HotDogs May 10th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Looks like SJ’s nephew is in a little hot water

    pgammo Peter Gammons
Dwight Howard not alone in Tweet hell. Bucs AA C Tony Sanchez last night about umps trying “to blow a game.” Eastern League not happy.

  51. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

abe says he used that move in ST and was told not to, but did it twice in last night’s game, then defended using it in the locker room after the game.

  52. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 1:48 pm

Poor Javy Vasquez he got taken to the woodshed again last night. His ERA is now at 6.88. I guess the National League hasn’t forgotten his sub 90′s FB.

  53. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 1:51 pm

    YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Just can’t recall seeing him on any rosters. How about Mat Latos an absolute stud last year, this year he is 0 – 5. Teams have have been dropping him right and left.

  54. Shame Spencer May 10th, 2011 at 1:53 pm

My favorite thing about the Ace balk was everyone is making it seem like THATS what lost them the game. I understand it contributed, but I think that ones kinda on Pap.

  55. Shame Spencer May 10th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Oh wait… the Sox didn’t lose and now I’m so confused. I guess this is why you’re supposed to read entire articles in news papers :P

sox didnt lose the game, just went into extras.

  58. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

well, i can see people drafting latos, i had him on my draft board, but then dropping him. chen was not an option starting out, so he’s gotta do better than he is before people start picking him up for more than just a matchup start, and i dont think thats gonna happen. but you never know. and im watching latos….i picked up alex rios on several teams as people have been giving up on him.

i traded berkman for rios on one team, i was worried, but then this past week, rios outscored berkman…

  59. Shame Spencer May 10th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

Yeah sorry guys I corrected myself when I was perusing box scores. I read so much about the balk this morning I assumed it resulted in a loss. Today has been a strange day in general. I also started the morning by putting on two different shoes. Glad I noticed before I left the house..

  60. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 2:09 pm

    YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

LOL ! I grabbed Rios on 4 teams when others dropped him. Figured he has nowhere to go but up. Last week we were rewarded. I have Latos on 2 teams and will give him a couple of more starts before I do anything.

The new guy this week being dumped is Adam Dunn, waiver claims abound on my end.

  61. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

yeah and ill take him off waivers on every team i can fit him onto. :)

When I do play, I only play in AL only leagues. He won me a ton of points last year…and is going to do well this year in Ws, IPs. League IIRC had 12 teams in AL only, so someone like Chen was valuable.

  64. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Sometimes when I look at the moves the other teams make I just scratch my head. Crazy stuff and then some seem to turn 4 – 5 guys over every week.

Are you in any leagues where you don’t know anyone ? Seems like those are the ones where you get some of the clueless players.

  65. Erin May 10th, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Never remember hearing of any attitude problem from Aceves in NY?

Either it didn’t exist or the Yankee beat writers kept it a secret and recycled a story about Derek or Alex that day instead?

Agreed…but then again it would make even more sense that Cash decided to pass on him if true.

  68. Erin May 10th, 2011 at 2:29 pm

pat-I was surprised when I read that re: Ace too. Maybe Boston is bringing out the worst in him. ;)

  69. Irreverent Discourse May 10th, 2011 at 2:30 pm

ESPN accounts for like 3% of all fantasy leagues (saw this on THT) and their preranks and draft software are the worst I have ever seen. I wouldn’t judge anything by their ownership values.

  70. Pat M. May 10th, 2011 at 2:32 pm

Some consider this to be the soft underbelly of the Yanks rotation ???? Look for a 3 game sweep folks against a very athletic and talented KC Royals Club….

  71. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 2:33 pm

yes, the lohud fbb league is great but we do have a few newbies in there, and we do share some info to help out the newer players. i wish i could get through to a couple of them though, i see teams have guys like joba and montero on thier rosters and there is always some talk about being ‘loyal’ to the players they have, but i think most are learning alot being in the league.

im also in a league of buddies which is the remnants of a roto league we had back in the 80′s (and we still do the yohoo shower!). but im also on some teams that i dont know anyone too!

  72. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 2:37 pm

    YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 2:33 pm

Absentee owners are the worst, you can’t trade with them they don’t pay attention which isn’t fun. Why they get into a league and then don’t participate is beyond me.

The only good thing is when you play those teams you slaughter them because more often than not they have guys in active positions that are on the DL. Priceless.

  73. upstate kate May 10th, 2011 at 2:38 pm

hey Ys I am giving it my best shot :)
The guys I like that I am keeping are guys that have been good for me, like Melky and Johnny Damon!

  74. Shame Spencer May 10th, 2011 at 2:40 pm

That part about Ace always thinking he should be a starter was actually what interested me the most..

  75. Irreverent Discourse May 10th, 2011 at 2:42 pm

YsGuy – There was actually an article today on THT about deadbeat owners.
    http://www.hardballtimes.com/m.....-his-team/

If you don’t read this site regularly, you should.

  76. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 2:43 pm

Damon is doing well, good job. :-)

  77. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 2:52 pm

kate, i love our league and im not making fun of anyone, i like everyone in the league and i love that we communicate and joke around about the players, etc.

however, it does make me cringe to see some of the players on some teams but if thats what makes anybody happy, thats great, that is what the league is for!

  78. upstate kate May 10th, 2011 at 2:52 pm

yeah, my major mistake was waiting too many rounds to go after pitchers

  79. upstate kate May 10th, 2011 at 2:56 pm

oh you can make fun of me Ys, and I will take any advice you want to give

  80. Irreverent Discourse May 10th, 2011 at 2:57 pm

    update kate – baseballmonster.com
Set up the league settings on that website and it will help you value the players properly, rather than relying on the silly Yahoo ranks (which are not tailored for… any specific settings i can figure out).

  81. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 2:57 pm

as for absentee owners, i think what happens is that people draft 25 teams (or 100) and then just play the ones who do well the first few weeks and abandon the others. and sometimes you see abandoned teams that could have been great teams but the owner gave up on them 2 weeks in when they are in last place.

i have a dead last team in one league suffering from crawford and bj upton’s poor starts, but i think its a very solid team and will come back, in fact i’ve been posting on the league message board that i fully expect to win the league in the end. although i am still in last place i have gone from -50 pts to -33 as crawford and upton have picked it up and i added rios who has always been a solid 5 cat guy! in fact that team has become my special project for the year!

  82. Irreverent Discourse May 10th, 2011 at 2:58 pm

    update! sigh… i need a nap

  83. Jason Voorhees May 10th, 2011 at 2:59 pm

Alex Gordon went undrafted. He’s been a good post-draft snag.

  84. upstate kate May 10th, 2011 at 3:02 pm

thanks ID, I will take a look when I have a chance

  85. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 3:08 pm

well, before you even analyze a team you have to accept a few premises in order to play good fantasy baseball. first off, there is no loyalty. players dont know if you start add or drop them and it has no effect on thier performances. its not like you have to go tell them you are benching them. secondly, players are merely a set of statistics, not people so favorites mean nothing, matsui isnt gonna hit any more homers because you like him. thirdly, red socks statistics are just as good as anyone else’s, so dont be shy to get players you hate or players from teams you hate. your rooting isnt gonna sway thier stats and agon is going to hit the same # of home runs whether you’re a yankees fan or a red socks fan.

  86. Vineyard Yankee May 10th, 2011 at 3:09 pm

    YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Those are the most fun trying to bring last place teams back from the edge of darkness. A true test of ones abilities to make the right moves.

With a bunch of teams, I had no choice but to auto draft a couple and got stuck with Crawford on each on. Crawford is just not a guy I would draft high under any circumstances. OFers are a dime a dozen and plentiful.

On several teams in 12 team leagues I have Halladay, Verlander, Ubaldo, Lester, Mo and Feliz on the same team. Pitching, pitching, pitching. :-)

  87. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 3:11 pm

if agon is up with the go ahead run on base im rooting against him even if he is on my fbb team and i need 2 ribbies to take over 1st place. im a yankees fan first and a ham fighters fan after that.

vy im one of those guys who always takes a starter in either the 1st round or second round. i have either lincicum, halladay or felix on every one of my teams. if you dont, you cannot be at the top of the pitching stats no matter what you do.

YsGuy – I’ve actually treaded that loyalty line fairly well up until this year. my rule of thumb was no redsox, and this did not really stop me from winning any leagues in the past…

This year I couldn’t pass up drafting Youkilis. He was only listed at 1B on yahoo and ranked accordingly (probably the 6th or 7th 1B on most peoples lists). 5 days into the season he picked up 3B eligibility and he instantly became the second most productive 3B in baseball (arod was projected low). I drafted him with that plan in mind, I have Teixeira and Youkilis manning my corners AND still have a 2nd round starter :)

wait what??? Players don’t know if I am adding them or dropping them?
Seriously, I just can’t bring myself to have any red sox on my team!

  94. Irreverent Discourse May 10th, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Players don’t know if I am adding them or dropping them?

That is a bold faced lie, every time I add a Yankee starter they go in the tank. :( I apologize for Colon’s start last week as that was ENTIRELY my fault…

  95. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 3:21 pm

i have the same revulsion to red socks and despite what i just posted, i dropped beckett after drefting him simply because i cant stand the guy. but it was a really dumb move…

Cool post at RAB….says the Yankees are 28.2 runs above league average at the “up the middle positions ” this season (C, SS, 2B, and CF)….

I think Cabrera will get a semi-mild ovation. Nothing close to what Damon and Matsui received last season.

I don’t miss Cabrera one iota. Glad he went somewhere else.

    I always liked Melky.

My favorite “Melky Moment” is when he hit for the cycle in Chicago-I was there!! :)

Melky was a popular player when he was here. So, I can see him getting a nice hand his first time up. After that, not so much.

Are you a distant relative ? ? LOL ! ! That is what I do always hoping I pick in the middle of the pack (I hate 1st pick) Usually I take two or three pitchers wout of my first 5 picks.

I have to admit, I used my second pick multiple times to take AGone. Despite him being a Red Sox player him and that short RF plus him getting out of PETCO was too tough to pass up.

On another team I Have Doc, Felix, Carpenter, CC, Mo, Feliz, Street and Nunez (FL). When some of these slow starting pitchers catch fire watch out. Carpenter being one and CC another.

I liked Melky. I liked when he and Robbie first came up and they added a bit of fun.
I know perception is not always reality, but he did seem to come up w/ the big hit. He certainly had his share of walk off moments.

You are always so fast with the arrow thingy. Do you have an alarm bell hooked into Chad so he can alert you ? ? :-)

  105. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

one thing is kate that you drafted first, which imo is the worst position to draft from. the dropoff from the top of the first round to the bottom of the second (especially in a 14 team league) is hard to overcome. you picked robbie first, which was a slight overpick, but not horrible especially considering pujols and hanram (consensus #’s 1&2 are slumping).your 2nd round (ichiro) has been pretty good, but your 4th round (garza) has hurt as has the injury to vmart. but martinez is back and cano can do better, so that will help you going forward. ike davis has been awesome.

if you look at the stats for the past 15 days you will see that johnny gomes (6 pts) and miguel tejada (11) are doing nothing for you, and aramis ramirez is also awful. if you check under the research key you will see that ramirez’s adp (average draft positioin) was 74 and even with his struggles he’s still owned in 100% of leagues, so that tells you that you dont want to get rid of him (although you might want to bench him till he starts to hit) gomes was undrafterd (260 adp means undrafted) is owned in only 34%of teams and his ownership has dropped by 45% so other owners are telling you he needs to go. tejada is also doing nothing (3 pts last week, only 23 for the season) and is owned in less leagues than even gomes.

    thanks Ys
I will look around for next week. I did learn to drop the high K guys I had, like Pena, b/c they were costing me points. V-mart was good for me last night. I wanted to replace tejada, but no one available looked any better.

  107. YsGuy May 10th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

i gotta go now but ill write you later and give you a quick pointer on how to look at who you might switch those guys out for and a little insight on how you look at your pitching staff! gotta run to a h.s. game right now!
