Soriano injury update

Rafael Soriano was unavailable tonight because of a sore elbow. He said it first started bothering him a week ago Monday in Detroit. Joe Girardi said the medical people “don’t think there’s much there.” But Soriano will have a precautionary MRI Wednesday. “I want to make sure everything’s fine,” Soriano said.

what a complete waste this guy has been

  2. Rich in NJ May 10th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

I think we need to reserve judgment for now. The sample size is far too small.

  3. -Matt- May 10th, 2011 at 11:02 pm

He’s like the Carl Pavano of late relief

  4. Ghostwriter May 10th, 2011 at 11:02 pm

I agree. It’s way too soon to write off Soriano.

Four years, four months. Yup, same thing.

getting to .500 for the Sox is like Sisyphus trying to get that boulder up the hill.

Gooder. Short and to the point.

Soriano will be a good addition before it’s over…..the bullpen story thus far though is Joba and D Rob

  13. Ghostwriter May 10th, 2011 at 11:06 pm

Nice win for the Yanks, and a nice loss for the Sox tonight. Here’s hoping the Jays can keep beating up on the Sox ‘pen for the next couple of nights…

  14. Triple Short of a Cycle May 10th, 2011 at 11:10 pm

Up to this point he has been a waste and that is all you can go on right now. This is now the second time he has been hurt and couldn’t pitch and on top of it all we lost a draft pick in a really good draft year

  15. West Coast Yankee Fan May 10th, 2011 at 11:15 pm

If Soriano was lights out most fans here would be singing his praises.

  16. Triple Short of a Cycle May 10th, 2011 at 11:18 pm

    West Coast Yankee Fan,

I was against the signing since it happened

  17. Ghostwriter May 10th, 2011 at 11:18 pm

“I think Colon is for real, but Garcia will fade.”

Interesting take. I see it going the other way. In the very short run, I expect colon to out-perform Garcia, because I’ll generally take my chances with a guy that can throw harder and can locate. So, in some sense, Colon’s performance thus far is not all that surprising. However, over the longer haul, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop with Colon. How long can Colon keep it up? How long was Colon out of baseball? Doesn’t he almost have to fade as the season wears on?

On the other hand, I think that Garcia can keep doing what he’s doing for as long as he likes. I don’t think that he has to put in maximum effort on each pitch, because he is changing speeds and locations. He’s not as old as Colon,, and he pitched nearly a whole season last year…

  18. Rich in NJ May 10th, 2011 at 11:18 pm

“Up to this point he has been a waste and that is all you can go on right now. ”

Why is there a need to go anything (IOW, reach any conclusion) when you consider that only 1/6 of the season has elapsed?

Yes, giving up the pick was probably a mistake, but if a year from now they get a better draft as compensation (which is not impossible), the the assessment changes.

So sure, we can pick selective endpoints and reach a negative conclusion, but it’s almost as if it’s printed with disappearing ink, at least until more facts emerge.

  19. Tyler May 10th, 2011 at 11:24 pm

Joba and Robertson have been great which has taken some of the pressure off of Soriano. I liked the Soriano signing at the time. He’s obviously not performing well as of now but there is still plenty of time to get things going. He’s had a couple of very very bad outings which have slightly skewed his ERA. I still feel comfortable with him in the game and I think Mariano and him will be invaluable in the back end come playoff time.

The thing that actually worries me most about the pen is the lefty reliever situation. I’m hoping that Sisco maybe gets a shot soon. Not a Logan fan at all. Maybe Banuelos serves that role in September, who knows.

    ================================================

Yes, it hasn’t worked out so far. However, I don’t see why there is a such a rush to determine whether or not it was a good move. There is a whole season to be played, and it will have its share of ups and downs. He may yet work out…

  22. Triple Short of a Cycle May 10th, 2011 at 11:26 pm

    Carlo,

I thought Hughes is 6 to 8 weeks away?

  23. Carlo May 10th, 2011 at 11:27 pm

Triple – yes, I’m talking hypothetical. Hughes is saying June return.

  24. Carlo May 10th, 2011 at 11:28 pm

and yes, I assume the answer is simple by the time he is ready.

  25. Rich in NJ May 10th, 2011 at 11:28 pm

Hughes might be in the mL in June. I don’t think we can see him here under any circumstances because, in effect, he will be starting ST all over again.

  26. benfica356 May 10th, 2011 at 11:28 pm

Chen won’t make the start tommorow cause of back injury. Vin Mazzaro will be called up from AAA to make the start

If Hughes is ready to go next week (hypothetical of course), who is the odd man out?
    =======================================

I think that Hughes might wind up being the odd man out. With the way Colon, Garcia, and Nova are pitching, I don’t think that Girardi should screw with the rotation. I would put Hughes back into the ‘pen, and let him gradually work his way back into the mix. When somebody goes down with an injury (or if one of the three seriously falter), Hughes can get his spot in the rotation back.

  29. ET May 10th, 2011 at 11:31 pm

“If Hughes is ready to go next week (hypothetical of course), who is the odd man out?”

    Minors until someone blows up.

  30. Triple Short of a Cycle May 10th, 2011 at 11:31 pm

    Ghostwriter,

Draft pick aside the money and years given to him was insane and a guy who was supposed to be an elite set /closer should not have his share of ups and downs, he should be dominant 90 percent of the time. He was projected to only add 1 WAR this year so I didn’t understand why so many people went gaga over him. Even the other night when he came in he let 1 run score before he got out of the inning. How many one two three innings has he had this year?

  31. ET May 10th, 2011 at 11:32 pm

“Chen won’t make the start tommorow cause of back injury. Vin Mazzaro will be called up from AAA to make the start”

At least it wasn’t some random rookie – we’ve seen this guy before and have torched him when we have.

  32. Carlo May 10th, 2011 at 11:32 pm

Surprised by the consensus view, but have to say I firmly agree with it.

  33. Rich in NJ May 10th, 2011 at 11:32 pm

If he’s healthy and effective, Hughes will never be the odd man out because swing and miss pitchers are more reliable than those that rely on the unpredictability of balls in play.

  34. Pat M. May 10th, 2011 at 11:33 pm

blake, wcyf….I too think Soriano will prove to be very valuable come July

Frankly, signing Soriano didn’t make much sense to me either. But what’s done is done. I don’t see the point in revisiting the issue every time that he disappoints us. It’s a long season, and he has a good track record. So, I expect that he’ll help us win at some point.

  38. NW Yankees Fan May 10th, 2011 at 11:41 pm

Is Hughes considered a swing and miss pitcher still. I seem to remember lots of foul balls and not being able to finish a batter off. He should have to earn his way back because all the others are doing so well IMO.

  39. Pat M. May 10th, 2011 at 11:41 pm

Don’t the Indians have the 2nd best record in baseball ???/

  40. Nick in SF May 10th, 2011 at 11:42 pm

So you’re saying a player would be getting more praise with a better performance?

    I can’t argue with it.

Will be tough for cleveland to screw this up. Should add a game to our modest lead tonight

  47. Jerkface May 10th, 2011 at 11:47 pm

Hughes gets swings and misses at an above average rate with his fastball. Soriano was a bad signing but at the very least once the games were played he was supposed to be a plus. He has been a huge disappointment. Hope he opts out.

  48. Captain Clutch May 10th, 2011 at 11:48 pm

Hughes isn’t going to be back for a while. He is basically starting at the 1st day of spring training. He probably won’t be back until the end of June. If he is healthy then he gets his spot back in the rotation and Garcia or Colon are out but it usually works itself out.

    *************

I agree and liked the signing. Here’s why.

I had no problem with the money especially since the Steinbrenners wanted to sign him. If the contract doesn’t bother them why would it bother anyone else. It’s their money. Given Lee and Pettitte not coming here and the total uncertainty surrounding Burnett, Colon, Garcia and Nova, strengthening the bullpen and shortening the game an inning made sense. Given Mariano’s age, Soriano was good insurance. It seemed smart to have a great closer on your team if your closer goes down. Regarding the opt out, the Yankees will get a first round draft pick if Soriano turns down their arbitration offer.

  67. Triple Short of a Cycle May 10th, 2011 at 11:59 pm

    West Coast Yankee Fan,

The money is an issue since the Yankees do have a limit to how much they will spend. Even though Beltran was begging to come here our payroll was high enough and we didn’t want to add to it. Back in 2000 we had to decide between Mussina or Manny. 2 years ago Cash was turned down in adding payroll in trading for Cameron so money is an issue even for the Yankees.

  68. West Coast Yankee Fan May 11th, 2011 at 12:00 am

Yes, I was Vineyard. I flew back due to a notice that I had received Gio photos. Alas, I was lied to.

  69. West Coast Yankee Fan May 11th, 2011 at 12:02 am

Trips – in this case with the Steinbrenners choosing to spend $35 million they didn’t need to, it doesn’t seem to be that money was an issue. Also, whatever budget limitations they set is arbitrary and not based on pressing financial need. Even with Soriano, they cut payroll this year.

  70. Vineyard Yankee May 11th, 2011 at 12:04 am

NW Yankees Fan May 10th, 2011 at 11:56 pm

Hey Vin…Oh yes, Cleveland, I forgot about that.

    ===================

Hey NW how ya doing ? Yeah, Cleveland home of the Indians, Browns, Cavs and The Cleveland Clinic. Used to be great to go to a game at Jacobs Field (Now Progressive) then head down to ‘The Flats’ for a couple of cold ones and a Brat or two.

Apparently now the population is half what it was in the 90′s, few jobs and ‘The Flats’ are a ghost town. You only go there now if you want to surrender your wallet.

  71. West Coast Yankee Fan May 11th, 2011 at 12:05 am

    Attention Joba:

Cicadas, the loud yet harmless insects, have begun rearing their unattractive heads across the U.S. after a 13-year lull spent underground. States like Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia are reporting the insects emerging in droves, and are preparing for that incessant buzzing that will soon fill the atmosphere as the male cicadas seek out mates in a clamorous event that last occurred in 1998.

  73. Triple Short of a Cycle May 11th, 2011 at 12:09 am

    West Coast Yankee Fan,

What I meant was this signing will effect the payroll in the future. Coming into the year the Yanks would have brought back Andy and signed Cliff Lee. Well now Soriano’s money replaces Andy’s.

as a hypothetical lets say they trade for King Felix and sign him to an extension close to Cliff Lee money and next year Andy wants to come back. Well that money is now going toward Soriano.

It has happened before. Beltran should have been on this team

  75. NW Yankees Fan May 11th, 2011 at 12:11 am

I am well Vin…hope you are too. It’s sad in a way because Cleveland is back to where they were in the 70′s, 80′s. My wife is from Youngstown, Ohio and she says she was at the old Cleveland Muicipal Stadium for games and says it was very bleak. Sounds like not much has changed except more impoverished and dangerous.

Triple Short of a Cycle May 10th, 2011 at 11:59 pm

Excuse me but I lost you there. Other than you saying the Yankees have payroll limitations, what do signings or non signings from several years past have to do with Soriano ?

If Hank and Hal own the team and tell Cashman to spend the money then thats what he does. They sign the checks and also sign the one to MLB for exceeding the payroll limitations. Just sayin.

  77. Triple Short of a Cycle May 11th, 2011 at 12:15 am

    Vineyard Yankee,

Because even the Yankees have a limit. I was pointing out in years past how reckless spending has cost them in elite players that they couldn’t sign.

They are not going to go much past 210 or 215

  78. Jerkface May 11th, 2011 at 12:19 am

Excuse me but I lost you there. Other than you saying the Yankees have payroll limitations, what do signings or non signings from several years past have to do with Soriano

Its just establishing the Yankees as having a finite payroll that does impact the move they make or do not make. Until the Yankees show a willingness to exceed 210 mil that should be considered the working payroll limit. They didnt sign Cliff Lee for whatever it took, they didn’t make moves in the past for payroll reasons. Having Soriano *this year* doesnt impact payroll because they failed their major acquisition, but he is likely to be under contract for a similarly huge price tag next year and the year after and thus will constrain the front office for minimal gain, being a non-mariano rivera short reliever.

  94. NW Yankees Fan May 11th, 2011 at 1:09 am

Yes, to all but Mickey and Whitey at the end. I remember Mantle in 1967 and 1968. Every time he came to bat, a standing ovation. He was a shell of his former self but worth watching. We idolized him. Another player we loved was John Havlicek with the Celtics, just fantastic!

SF born and raised. Mays, McCovey, Marichal, Perry and Co. .50 cent bleacher seats, $ 4.50 for a box seat behind the plate. We used to rent seat cushion for a quarter. Moved to the North Bay after the City took a dive and it was better for the kids.

Havlicek was like superman coming in as rhe 6th man before he became a starter.
