Regulars in the lineup for series opener

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on May 13, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

No pitchers listed, which is usually a sure sign that a pitcher is on the way.

Buddy Carlyle seems to be packing his locker and there is a locker labeled Noesi. That could be the move.

UPDATE, 4:10 p.m.: As expected, Hector Noesi is here, Buddy Carlyle is down. That’s the only move. Sanit is staying for now.

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C
Brett Gardner LF

Right now this is the best lineup Joe can put out there. Debatable if Gardner should lead off against the lefty or whatever, but this group of guys has to get it done. The bright lights are on time to step up.

Who’s going to miss the song stylings of the one and only Buddy Carlyle?

  6. Captain Clutch May 13th, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I wish there was a way to break up Posada and Swisher in the lineup. I am surprised that Cano ever gets pitches to hit with those 2 batting behind him. Girardi could bat Martin between them until one of them starts hitting. Martin hasn’t been on fire but he should start heating up soon and those 2 are completely lost.

The Buddy Carlyle Myth has been exposed, and the Buddy Carlyle era is over.

  10. BoJo May 13th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

And on his way out, it has been heard that Buddy quoted McArthur’s “I shall return…”

The full quote was “I shall return these bottles for the deposits as my income just took a hit.”

There is. Gardner is hot. Who cares what kind of hitter he is as long as he hits, ride him.

There are many ways to break up posada and swisher in the lineup. Most of the ones that come to mind for me start with Girardi recognizing that Posada is not productive and Cashman recognizing that expecting him to be a fruitful DH was silly.

He struck out a school-record 18 batters in a 1974 win over Ohio Northern in the first round of the Division II College World Series. He was 21-8 for his career with a 2.42 ERA, twice winning small-college honorable mention All-America honors, with 23 complete games and seven shutouts.

  30. Captain Clutch May 13th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

The best way to break up Posada and Swisher would be to bring up Montero and let him DH. Unfortunately the Yanks are probably going to give Posada another month to see if he has anything left.

Quoting his OPS as a measure as to whether he is ready to hit in the majors is silly.

When he OPS’d over 1 in the 2nd half of last season was he super duper ready to hit in the majors?

  42. Niblick May 13th, 2011 at 4:23 pm

blake, of course it means something. It means he ain’t exactly Yogi Berra. Or even the much maligned Jorge. Let him figure out how to hit in the minors before we appoint him savior of the team.

  49. Niblick May 13th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

LGY – awesome power – 2 HR this year. Just breathtaking.

  50. GreenBeret7 May 13th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Noesi was scheduled to make his start tonight, so, he’s on target to give the Yankees a few innings over the next few days. There isn’t a bat at AAA that can play a useful position for the Yankees right now. Vazquez would get eaten alive by breaking pitches. At least with Maxwell or Parraz, they can provide speed and defense along with hitting the occasional mistake fastball into the seats. Dickerson is struggling a bit right now, but, he might be the most logical option with outfield defense, speed and bunting ability. Golson is still on the DL.

As far as pitchers, Pendleton still can’t be brought back for another week so bringing up a pitcher already on the 40 man roster makes the most sense.

  51. GreenBeret7 May 13th, 2011 at 4:35 pm

One of the best pitching instructors/pitching coaches of the 80s and 90s, Mel Queen, Jr. has died at age 69.

Soriano just didn’t want to pitch against the lowly Royals…..

  53. LGY May 13th, 2011 at 4:36 pm

LGY – awesome power – 2 HR this year. Just breathtaking.

    —————

    LOL.

Seriously doubting his power after 100 PAs? The kid who has shown massive power at every level, including AAA?

Whatever floats your boat. The last thing I’m worried about is Jesus Montero hitting for power.

Should we discuss Posada’s .352 SLG?

  54. Niblick May 13th, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Sori’s saving himself for the AL East, since he refused to pitch against them in ST?

  55. Patrick May 13th, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Montero has been ready to hit in the majors since last summer…

  56. RS May 13th, 2011 at 4:36 pm

We don’t need Montero to hit homeruns. What this lineup needs desperately is someone who can hit for average. Short term, a .250 hitter will do compared to the sub-.200 we’re getting from Posada. Long-term, Montero projects to be a .300 hitter which would be awesome to pair with Cano.

  57. Wave Your Hat May 13th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Swapping Noesi for Carlyle leaves 13 pitchers on the roster. 13 pitchers made sense last night because the bullpen was shot, but if Soriano is back then it ought to be at full strength tonight. Sanit’s spot is wasted because having thrown 81 pitches he can’t pitch the entire series. It makes no sense to keep him here, it’s just a dead spot. Maxwell seems like the logical choice, he probably wouldn’t see any action but you know Sanit won’t.

  58. Rob_NY May 13th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

    Niblick May 13th, 2011 at 4:30 pm
LGY – awesome power – 2 HR this year. Just breathtaking.

    —————

Arbitrary end points FTW. Montero has more power than any prospect in the Yankee system and he has spent over a year at AAA. Quoting a month and a half of statistics isn’t very helpful and ignores any other issues that may affect his homerun totals.

GB7 mentioned recently that because the guys batting ahead of Jesus in Scranton have sucked he hasn’t been getting anything to hit on the inside. Being smarter than your average AAA masher he’s been shooting those outside pitches to RF and taking his hits.

Jesus is ready to begin his major league hitting career. I don’t even think that’s really disputable.

  59. Captain Clutch May 13th, 2011 at 4:40 pm

When the Yanks brought up Cano from the minors he wasn’t exactly killing the ball. It will probably take Montero a little while to figure out major league pitching but I wouldn’t be concerned about him at all if they brought him up tomorrow. He is ready. What does someone have to hit .350 with 40 homeruns in the minors to prove he is ready?

  60. GreenBeret7 May 13th, 2011 at 4:40 pm

The Yankees play 6 games this weekend and the start of next week against Boston and Tampa. They’ll need arms.

  61. Patrick May 13th, 2011 at 4:40 pm

Wave who cares man? It’s the last guy on the roster. Do you really think Maxwell would help this team tonight or this weekend?

  62. Irreverent Discourse May 13th, 2011 at 4:41 pm

One does not justify the other LGY.

Montero was sent to AAA to work on his catching, and its pretty clear that its too much of a distraction for him to keep his bat going well. Doesn’t sound ready to me. I want a catcher, not a pro DH.

  63. Erin May 13th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

  65. blake May 13th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

Alex is the the only other person in the entire Yankee organization that could have hit a ball where Montero did yesterday to the opposite field.

  66. Wave Your Hat May 13th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

“Wave who cares man? It’s the last guy on the roster. Do you really think Maxwell would help this team tonight or this weekend?”

He or whoever else the Yanks might call up stands a better chance of helping than does Sanit.
Luck is the residue of design.

  67. Wave Your Hat May 13th, 2011 at 4:44 pm

    GB7-

OK, so send Sanit down and bring up a pitcher, although 8 relievers seems a bit much.

  68. Melk Man May 13th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

“There are many ways to break up posada and swisher in the lineup. Most of the ones that come to mind for me start with Girardi recognizing that Posada is not productive and Cashman recognizing that expecting him to be a fruitful DH was silly.”

Bingo. Moving Posada around in the lineup accomplishes what? He is still hitting .150 and killing rallies.

Moving him out of the lineup completely solves the problem. Like Rich said, I’d bat Gardner higher, but we all know Joe won’t because he is a “double leadoff” guy.

  69. blake May 13th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

    ” I want a catcher, not a pro DH”

they have a catcher for this year and next if they choose….Russell Martin. Montero is going to be brought along slowly behind the plate in the big leagues no matter when they bring him up…..he could catch the entire season at SWB and he still won’t be the every day catcher next year.

  70. Patrick May 13th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

He or whoever else the Yanks might call up stands a better chance of helping than does Sanit.
Luck is the residue of design.

I don’t think it really matters at all. I would be as helpful this weekend as Justin Maxwell

    How is that clear?

He can come up and be the DH and BUC and fill a very important role on this team.

  72. Patrick May 13th, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Bench Posada, send Cervelli down and bring up Montero. He can play C when Martin needs a day and DH the rest of the time.

  73. Wave Your Hat May 13th, 2011 at 4:51 pm

“I don’t think it really matters at all. I would be as helpful this weekend as Justin Maxwell”

Sure, Patrick. Go grab a glove.

  74. Wave Your Hat May 13th, 2011 at 4:53 pm

You guys are obsessed with Montero. He isn’t coming up right now, the Yanks are going to go with Jorge through at least Memorial Day. Spend all your karmic energy on positive Jorge thoughts instead.

  75. Captain Clutch May 13th, 2011 at 4:54 pm

If Martin stays healthy and continues to hit Montero isn’t catching for this team. Atleast not as an everyday catcher. If they are determined to keep him in the minors until he looks like a Molina brother behind the plate he could never make it out of AAA.

  76. Jerkface May 13th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

I don’t believe in Karma, but I think I can manage to multi-task cheering for Jorge while also pining for Montero

I’d almost prefer that he doesn’t play catcher every day. He’s probalby more valuable to this team as a part time DH, part time catcher.

  80. Wave Your Hat May 13th, 2011 at 4:59 pm

I don’t believe in karma either, but the chance that it nevertheless exists seems greater than the chance of an immediate Montero call up.

  81. GreenBeret7 May 13th, 2011 at 4:59 pm

There’s 25 players on the yankees right now that you can boo and trash. Perhaps Cashman doesn’t want to use all of the prospects at once. He wants to wait until you tire of booing them before bringing in new ones for you to trash when they don’t strike out every hitter or get a hit in every at bat.

  82. JobaTipsHisCap May 13th, 2011 at 4:59 pm

It would be better for Montero’s health and career if he didn’t catch everyday anyway. Look at Mauer he is still young and his knees are all messed up. They could also see how Montero does playing 1st. He will only be 26 when Tex’s contract is over. He could DH, catch some games or play some 1st base. You never know but it doesn’t seem like any everyday catcher is where he will be.
