Beltran is really swinging the bat well so far….question is though woukd the Mets deal fairly with the Yankees. I don’t know about that…..

    ___

Talking about as a FA though….

Short term, the Yankees may try to get by with what they have here and in AAA.

I dont see if Swisher continues like that, how they can pick up his option, hence the Beltran possibility.

  2. blake May 23rd, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Yea id rather pick up Swisher’s option than give Beltran a new contract……unless it was one year.

Pence is a good player and the Astros are dreadful……don’t know what the price would be in him.

  3. Jerkface May 23rd, 2011 at 12:16 pm

I dont see if Swisher continues like that, how they can pick up his option, hence the Beltran possibility.

Because the alternatives are gross and by picking up the option they guarantee any team that wants him knows the exact length and cost. If he is on the market you deal with the uncertainty of another team giving him extra years whatever.

1 year deals make everything better.

  4. CompassRosy May 23rd, 2011 at 12:17 pm

The match up this upcoming weekend in Seattle should be interesting…

The most prolific home run hitters vs. the pitching staff who has given up the fewest home runs.

    Something’s gotta give ;-)

  5. blake May 23rd, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Let’s see if the future Yankee star pitcher in Seattle can shut down the current Yankee offense ;)

  6. Mike Ri May 23rd, 2011 at 12:20 pm

I can’t see Swisher struggling through-out the Season. we have to take the wait and see approach until the All-Star break. I’d be happy with Beltran or Pence. I think Beltran can be had at a cheaper price..

That being said .. . Pitching is still the name of the game. .

agreed. I do think he’ll turn it around eventually. Sooner rather than later would be nice. ;)

The Jays have been a thorn on the Yankees side for awhile. Take nothing for granted with them from Bautista and through the rest of their lineup.
Somehow they rise to the occasion when facing the Yankees.

  10. Joe from Long Island May 23rd, 2011 at 12:30 pm

Chad – I’m reading about the devastation on Joplin. Hope your family and friends are ok.

  11. ac1 May 23rd, 2011 at 12:30 pm

they should just walk bautista and make someone else beat them….

  12. upstate kate May 23rd, 2011 at 12:32 pm

happy to see the Yankees aren’t facing Morrow for personal reasons…he is on my fantasy team and I wouldn’t want to root against him!

  13. jacksquat May 23rd, 2011 at 12:32 pm

I can’t imagine many teams wanting Swisher at his option salary if he continues to perform as he has so far this year.

    .214 .330 .303 .633

    Terrible.

He should consider trying hitting from the right side vs rhp. Not as much power (2009/10) but it seems like he has a much better eye from that side. I’d bet he is left eye dominant.

  14. Jerkface May 23rd, 2011 at 12:34 pm

I can’t imagine many teams wanting Swisher at his option salary if he continues to perform as he has so far this year.

Somehow the yankees identified him in 08 putting up this line: .219 .332 .410 .743 with 4 years potentially left on a deal and took him. I think a team will take the plunge for 1 year.

have to be realistic with how contracts go on the market and player availability.

  15. blake May 23rd, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Swisher is better than he’s playing.

  16. Jerkface May 23rd, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Still has a 24% line drive rate. Even if all the nerds in the kingdom sucked at recognizing what a line drive was, they can’t possibly be so wrong to make that number 100% ridiculous. There are some things happening with Swisher. He isn’t getting lucky when he puts the ball in play, he isn’t getting lucky when he puts the ball in the air to generate HRs, and he is compounding his own misfortune with a really terrible approach at times.

Swisher will always strike out, but when you are also mired in a heap of bad luck every K hurts because its one less opportunity for a hit.

  17. hardwired7 May 23rd, 2011 at 12:40 pm

it would have been nice to dodge Pineda/Hernandez & Weaver/Haren on the upcoming west coast trip, but OTOH it is good to see how the lineup stacks against the best pitchers.

  18. jacksquat May 23rd, 2011 at 12:43 pm

The 24% ld%, is that 24% of ab or 24% of pa?

  19. jacksquat May 23rd, 2011 at 12:43 pm

Hm, scratch that, it’s 24% of balls in play?

  20. Jerkface May 23rd, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Its the percentage of ABs where he puts the ball in play.

  21. Jerkface May 23rd, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Although it does count ‘not in play’ batted ball occurences.

    ________________

The M’s recently had a two-game series vs. the Halos at The Safe and, it just so happened that they drew Weaver and Haren … they beat then both. I’m thinking the Yanks should be able to do the same (at least I’m hoping so)

  23. BD (Boston Dave) May 23rd, 2011 at 12:51 pm

    swisher is a myth
a contact hitter who doesn’t make contact
a patient hitter who doesn’t walk
a high obp guy who is never on base
    just what is he?
    an unlucky hitter?

  28. BD (Boston Dave) May 23rd, 2011 at 12:53 pm

    Thanks Rosy.

Yanks pitchers will need to be up to the task. And their bats may need to play a little small ball. Should be a good series.

  29. Jerkface May 23rd, 2011 at 12:56 pm

a contact hitter who doesn’t make contact
a patient hitter who doesn’t walk
a high obp guy who is never on base

Who ever said Swisher was a contact hitter? Swisher walks in 14% of his PA, his on base is over Jeters despite hitting 40 points less. He is on base 33% of the time.

  30. mick May 23rd, 2011 at 12:56 pm

swish under pressure, the loosey-goosey guy he is, never produces.
not even in a walk year.

no way in hades yanks pay him 10.25 next year, no matter what he does.
even his play in the field suffers under the pressure of the spotlight.
but he and andruw have great smiles.

  35. Rich in NJ May 23rd, 2011 at 1:01 pm

Whatever Swisher is, I’d like to see more of Dickerson for now.

  36. CompassRosy May 23rd, 2011 at 1:02 pm

    BD ~

The M’s starters are on quite a roll right now …
They have gone nine straight starts throwing at least 7 innings and giving up less than 2 runs (allowing only 6 runs in 70 innings, to be exact). I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they can keep up that pace, at least through the weekend (since I’ll be at all three games). No question the Yanks bats will be a good test.

  37. 86w183 May 23rd, 2011 at 1:07 pm

    Mick —

For his career in “late and close” situations Swisher has a .265 batting average and .855 OPS. that’s hardly “never producing” under pressure. And it’s better than his career numbers overall.

  38. Irreverent Discourse May 23rd, 2011 at 1:22 pm

mick – if not swisher, who plays right field next year? there is not a single other person on the FA list i would pay, other than sizemore and thats a terrible idea.

  39. Bronx Jeers May 23rd, 2011 at 1:28 pm

I guess the asking price for Beltran will go down considering the guy that signs his checks only sees him as 60%-70% of the player he signed.

Reyes? Always hurt. Wright? He’s no superstar.

If push comes to shove you have to give up one of ban or betances but probably not both.

    Montero
    hughes
    nunez
    brackman

    Anybody???????????

  42. BoJo May 23rd, 2011 at 1:32 pm

I’ve been saying since ST that we need to try and get Bryce Harper because Swisher is not the long term answer for RF. Given that Harper is unavailable, my next suggestion has been to acquire Beltran or–if he is unavailable–convert Nunez to RF and let him develop there. Perhaps give Dickey some tie in a platoon…

But to me, the RF position needs a better defensive player with superstar offensive ability.

For next year, I wonder if Pujols would be interested in playing there….

  43. Bronx Jeers May 23rd, 2011 at 1:33 pm

Swish is a lefty that had troubles with righties and Jorge’s a righty that has trouble with lefties.

  45. mick May 23rd, 2011 at 1:42 pm

posada and swisher are clogging up the works, give dickerson a shot…montero….there will be a deal for someone other than swisher next year….even beltran is a possibility, and they will save money over swisher.

  46. 86w183 May 23rd, 2011 at 1:47 pm

Swish is three and a half years younger than Beltran. He’s also been the better player for the past few seasons and is more durable.

Hopefully the McCourts will have to have a garage sale….

This West Coast trip given the caliber of pitching we will be facing should provide interesting information on the home run topic.

  56. Captain Clutch May 23rd, 2011 at 2:09 pm

I really hope that Girardi gives Dickerson a chance to play RF against some righties and it wasn’t just a 1 day thing. If Dickerson can get a hit here and there and make contact that is an improvement over Swisher. Swisher has been putrid and if he has to be platooned against a righties with good off speed pitches then do it.

  57. tyanksfan36 May 23rd, 2011 at 2:09 pm

    Erin

what a pretty picture that was.

  58. Giuseppe Franco May 23rd, 2011 at 2:10 pm

As someone rightly stated earlier, quality pitching gives up fewer long balls but they also give up fewer runs, hits, and walks – which equal fewer base runners.

    It’s called common sense.

  59. Rich in NJ May 23rd, 2011 at 2:11 pm

You know what provides interesting info on HR? Runs scored and wins, and by and large, the Yankees have done that pretty well for years, whether it was Tino or Bernie or O’Neill, or A-Rod or Teix, or Matsui.

  60. Erin May 23rd, 2011 at 2:11 pm

There’s a reason why he’s 29 yrs old and hasn’t seen much time in the bigs.

Joe In LI, Joplin, Missouri is on the Oklahoma and Missouri state lines and about 15-20 miles from Commerce, Oklahoma. After Mickey Mantle, the biggest thing to ever hit Commerce was Bonny and Clyde blowing into town and robbing the bank, shooting two cops and killingg one.

  69. Rich in NJ May 23rd, 2011 at 2:19 pm

Dickerson’s ML career splits v. RHP are not terrible:

    .276 .365 .423 .788

So if Swisher is having an off year for whatever reason, he could prove somewhat valuable, especially since their current 4th OF was brought in to hit LHP and may be in a steep decline.

  70. West Coast Yankee Fan May 23rd, 2011 at 2:20 pm

And have more months like May when we are 9-11 so far after getting good pitching and hitting 27 home runs? Really.

  71. Rich in NJ May 23rd, 2011 at 2:23 pm

20 games out of a 162 season, IOW, 12.3% of games, means what exactly?

  72. BoJo May 23rd, 2011 at 2:24 pm

Right now, Swisher is less popular than a condom salesman on an island of lesbians, so I don’t expect a major return if we tried to trade him.

charleston got cuffed around in their game today, but, JR Murphy was 2-3 with a 2 walks. double and an RBI. He also had a throwing error. Heathcott was 3-5 with a triple and 3 runs scored. Don’t worry about his RBI totals (14). He has 11 doubles, 3 triples and 3 homers out of the leadoff spot.

  75. Rich in NJ May 23rd, 2011 at 2:28 pm

  77. Giuseppe Franco May 23rd, 2011 at 2:29 pm

The percentage of winning the game yesterday increased so very little in the 7th whether Cervy got that bunt down and made it 2nd and 3rd one out. Or just simply K’d and they had 1st and 2nd one out, that I wonder why Girardi insists on using the bunt.

IMO, the yankees need a character like Nick Swisher to keep some guys loose. Swisher had a career year last year and probably will not repeat that this year. Average in all respects, hitting, fielding and slightly below in base running. Beltran not worth the aggravation or money. Dickerson looks like a promising young outfielder, better arm than Swisher and much quicker on the bases. Solid 4th outfielder option at this point. Jones on the other hand isn’t doing much of anything except taking up a bench spot.

speaking of home runs, Rob Lyerly hit one on saturday and i missed it because the game started at 6 and my ticket said it started at 7, he hit it in the bottom of the first. He has still been a hot hitter. Unless we can do some really good lobbying for Deangelo Mack or Kevin Mahoney, then I think Rob will win player of the month. Cant wait for Heathcott to get up here, I saw the Melky catch and it was like deja vu.

GF, you also have a few of those types that will jump sides on whatever the topic is 4 or 5 times, such as the home runs. One in particular. The good thing about this one straddling the fence so often is that eventually, he’ll slip and neuter himself. At least he won’t be reproducing any more jackasses like himself.

TY, still a week to go for Mahoney and Mack to make a run, but, right now, Lyerly is a shoe-in. Bad defense or not, his offense is impressive.

I take this to mean that the Yankees will sweep and Mariner fans will be dragging themselves through the negro streets looking for an angry fix.

GB – Hi. The story said the population of Joplin is about 45,000. There are more people than that where I grew up in Brooklyn. Regardless, the stories sound positively awful. Prayers for all there.

charleston got cuffed around in their game today, but, JR Murphy was 2-3 with a 2 walks. double and an RBI. He also had a throwing error. Heathcott was 3-5 with a triple and 3 runs scored. Don’t worry about his RBI totals (14). He has 11 doubles, 3 triples and 3 homers out of the leadoff spot.

    What happened to Gary Sanchez?

This is the 3rd straight game he has missed.

yes I have to agree, there is nothing like a game ending/saving double play. I like someone who can hit, and I like a team that can hit but I also like the feeling of knowing that the fielders can make their plays because there is nothing worse than seeing a ball going towards the 3rd baseman(for the Tampa Yankees that is Rob Lyerly-10 errors) and having to hold my breath not on just his fielding but also his delivery of the ball to the 1st baseman(for the Tampa Yankees that is Luke Murton – 8 errors)

But I do love home runs, more than a lot of other things in baseball. A great Melky Mesa catch is right up there though, the guy has great instincts when it comes to judging fly balls. Hardly ever gets a bad jump.

Felix has pretty much emasculated the Yanks when he faces them.

I’ll keepy fingers crossed for a 2-1 Yanks win.

The Pineda matchup should be the more interesting of the two.

    Boy, ain’t that the truth.

  107. GreenBeret7 May 23rd, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Nothing wrong with Sanchez. He has played a long string of games and his defense hasn’t been good. Just a guess but, the system catching instructor is in town, so perhaps that’s where his energy is being directed.

against my better judgement I will probably cast my vote for Lyerly just because I cant deny his RBI total is just insane. If we had a stone glove award he would be a shoe in for that too. I guess you cant have everything. Based on how Marshall does tomorrow, which might be his last or second to last start of May, he is looking good for pitcher of the month though Solbach might get sympathy votes because he deserved it more in April than Romanski.

Sad to hear about his current plight, but he has a great outlook about it, at least.

Joe In LI, Joplin is a wreck today, Last estimates were that half of the city was flattened and they haven’t found nearly all of the missing. Last total that I heard was 90 dead. Trouble is that the weather will be nearly the same next week. They can’t take another hit like that.

Are you going to make it to any Trenton games this week? Did you go see Manny yesterday?

  115. GreenBeret7 May 23rd, 2011 at 3:11 pm

Aldo, skowron, like Ellie Howard never got the praise that they deserved during those years. Make no mistake, though, theu both had monsterous power to right center and left center. Both hit at least 5 homers into the left center bleachers, which were at 457 feet at that time. Skowron and Howard were also really close to Mantle. Those teams could also manufacture home runs. What they could also do was play defense. Skowron was an outstanding hitter. One of NYYS worst trades for years was Skowron to the Dodgers for Stan Williams, but, Pepitone was too good of a talent to trade away. Moose has been one of the OTD staples for years and other than Berra, Ford, Richardson and Kubek are pretty much all that’s remaining from those 50s and early 60s teams. Really wish Kubek would return to the flock.

GB – life isn’t fair, for the poor folk in Joplin, other places devastated by the weather.

  117. Joe from Long Island May 23rd, 2011 at 3:19 pm

GB – on another note – and one that cannot compare to the serious issues that we’ve been discussing – what do you know about these kids Howard and Martin? Pat M was talking up a youngster named Henry Owens the other day.

And, you’re right about Moose and Ellie Howard. They were tremendous players, overshadowed because of the teams they played on.

  118. BoJo May 23rd, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Even though it robbed players of home runs, I miss the old time ball parks with OF walls over 430 ft away. I was watching a Bobby Murcer Yankeeography yesterday, and saw footage of Bobby chasing Tony Horton’s ball around the monuments. It brought back great memories of the old park.

    __________
I will if I don’t get yours soon.

Yes, I saw Manny. He was good, not great. He still doesn’t have his normal FB command, and was missing outside with the fastball on righties. He had a lot of full counts; however, he had 7 K’s and his curveball was his best swing and miss pitch and looked good. And he gets such a range with it, from @71-78. FB was 91-3, topping at 95. However, his change wasn’t plus and he was unable to get through 5 with the pitch count restrictions. It is a process, though. Both he and Betances looked good this week; however, they are still in early season mode, so I am not going to get bent out of shape over the walks. They especially get out of whack when Trenton’s offense is putting up runs, after sitting for too long. That was the case for Manny last night in the top of the 3rd.

Suttle had a right field homer, but was out in front on a few breaking pitches for swinging strikes. I missed Mesa’s catch; I got there late, but saw it on video. Great catch! He does a nice job patrol CF out there. His AB’s, however, are just so hit and miss with that all-out swing of his. CoJo and Romine continue to impress, such good hitters who just hit the ball wherever it is pitched.

Trenton’s now on the road, so I won’t be seeing them again until June.

  125. Erin May 23rd, 2011 at 3:36 pm

blake-not a bad idea, but Girardi hinted before yesterday’s game that some guys are “banged up”. I’m willing to bet Swisher is one of them.

  126. yankeefeminista May 23rd, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Btw, Stolmy Pimental, Red Sox prospect who was pitching for Portland last night, really got hit hard. Trenton swept Portland, Red Sox affiliate, which kind of reflects our(Yanks) superiority prospects-wise in the upper ranks right now.

Joe, In LI, that people in that area are in for a rough summer, I’m afraid. The worst thing is that the rains will start. Their concerns now are that the water mains may not operate and with the gas lines and power lines down, the fire departments won’t be able to deal with the emergencies.

It will be interesting to see if the city can help each other or if the vultures will move in to take advantage of the tragedy. I keep hoping that people will be humane, but, I don’t expect it.

as far as the two kids mentioned, I know very little about them. There’s just so many names mentioned that I usuallt start getting acquainted with the new kids after the Yanks draft them.

  129. yankeefeminista May 23rd, 2011 at 3:38 pm

    Is the entire lineup up?

Good point, Erin. Sounds like some of the guys are also sick, based on how they sounded during interviews after yesterday’s game.

  130. Joe from Long Island May 23rd, 2011 at 3:38 pm

Erin – the little bit I’ve picked up about Joe’s managing style is to play his slumping players, to let them try to work through it. He’s loyal in that respect, maybe to a fault. Coupled with a comment Joe made yesterday, about not releasing his lineup until he checked if a few guys were good to go, makes me wonder if Swish is nursing some injury.
