Does Jones deserve to be in the line-up? I guess giving Jeter a 1/2 day off is a priority. I seem to agree.
Gardner needs to stay in there, even versus a lefty because right now he’s hot. Play the hot hand.

  2. Erin May 24th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

    Swisher’s back! :)

  3. West Coast Yankee Fan May 24th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

ID – “Don’t assume that I don’t look at blowouts and shutouts (if you want to eliminate one, why not the other?), the point was to prove that it is any more “streaky” than other teams, which it isn’t. Being in first place while the team hasn’t played up to it’s ability yet is NOT a bad thing.”

    ****************

Speculation as to what this team’s ability is – is fraught with peril. You don’t know what any given Yankee is going to do the rest of the way. No one can predict the future. All one can do is assess how they are playing and looking at their 10-12 record in May, including 5-8 at home, we are obviously not playing well.

  4. Hassey May 24th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Ladies – I’ve done some deep thinking since this morning and I changed my mind. I’m Back!!!

    Did I miss anything?

  5. Captain Clutch May 24th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Andruw Jones is should a waste of space. Why is he on the roster if the Yanks are playing Nunez over him? They have to make a move with the DH spot, Posada and Jones are giving them nothing.

  6. jackamir May 24th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

That’s a winner… You can bank on it.

  7. TheMacster May 24th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

Hope you get some runs for CC!

  8. matt1766 May 24th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

I hate when they play Jeter at DH. Either have him play SS or give him the day off.

  9. SoS May 24th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

As much as I disliked Griffey Jr. for holding a gun to Seattle(going public) and making them trade him to Cincy. I have to respect him for hanging up the gloves mid season.

When is the last time a team had a DH batting .170 by the end of May?
How much more time do you give him before you move on to plan b?
If Posada continued to struggle. Does anyone see him retiring before seasons end.

One last question. If Cashman is going to use Montero as a trade chip and thats the reason why he wont bring him up. Why not call Romine up? He cant be worse than Eyes wide shut.

  10. munson15 May 24th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

That lineup can’t score any runs.

  11. Phranchise May 24th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

Jorge and Jones have really no business in this lineup. Both guess on pitches. I hopefully don’t one day throw something through my tv watching Jorge take strike three right down the middle again with men on. They have both proven universally they shouldn’t play every day. The better part is seeing the Jones articles where he wants to prove he can play every day. Yeah right. Is there anyone that would really argue having Maxwell and Vasquez or Montero would be worse than these two? At the worst the minor leaguers would have the same flaws as these guys.

  12. Irreverent Discourse May 24th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Do you guys even realize what the Yankees May splits are compared to the rest of the league?

For this month of May where they have “slumped horribly” and it should be “so obvious” to us stat geeks…

Tied for first in runs scored.
    4th in hits
    1st in HR.
    2nd in Total Bases
13th in AVG (again, better than half of the league)
    7th in OPS

It doesn’t matter if you think the Yankee production is “down” if everyone else’s is worse and they are still the best in the league…

  13. munson15 May 24th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

I love Jorge, but if he is still hitting .170 June 15, it’s time for a change.

  14. SoS May 24th, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Does Jones deserve to be in the line-up?

    =========

Jones belongs in the Mets lineup. They seem to like retreads. Maybe we can flip him for Beltron.

  15. West Coast Yankee Fan May 24th, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Thanks for proving my point again ID. Your stats mean little – we are 10-12 in May.

  16. Irreverent Discourse May 24th, 2011 at 3:50 pm

WCYF – No one can predict the future. All one can do is assess how they are playing and looking at their 10-12 record in May

That is where you lose everyone. You don’t asses them based off of one month, or one small set of games. There is plenty of precedent to go by to determine what this teams ability level is. You think that people are given multi-million dollar contracts because future success can’t be predicted at all?

Truth is, you don’t know how the rest of the league is going to do either. You can only assume that the Yankees need to do “more”. I am terrified to ask this but… what is that based on?

No one is trying to tell you they’ve played well this month, obviously losing games is losing games… but the losses are not on the shoulders of the offense alone which seems to be where everyone wants to place the blame.

  17. Irreverent Discourse May 24th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

WCYF – being 10-12 in may when the offense is proven to be completely productive means the offense is to blame? what?

  18. SoS May 24th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

    munson15,
Its pretty freakin hard to keep an avg. under 2. Do you still make a move even if hes somewhere at the .210-220 mark by June 15?

  19. Warning Track Power May 24th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

in the upcoming series in seattle, Yankees are scheduled to face the top 2 m’s starters to begin the series-Pineda and Felix. WOW!!!

  20. Hassey May 24th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

What do you think would happen if a player asked Kim Jones to do the next interview in HER locker-room?

  21. blake May 24th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

This decision is more about Girardi rather having Nunez in the lineup than Jones…..it allows Jeter a half day as well. Probably nearing the end of the line for Andrew.

  22. Captain Clutch May 24th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

The only reason that Jeter is DHing is because Girardi would rather have Nunez’s bat in the lineup instead of Posada or Jones. They know that Jones has no chance to hit Romero’s changeup. I like Nunez’s bat but it’s pathetic that he is basically DHing over them.

  23. West Coast Yankee Fan May 24th, 2011 at 3:55 pm

Irreverent Discourse May 24th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

WCYF – being 10-12 in may when the offense is proven to be completely productive means the offense is to blame? what?

    ********************

The offense has not been proven to be productive this month. In 7 out of our 12 losses we have scored 3 runs or less. How is that a productive offense?

In 3 of our wins we scored 9 runs or more. That serves to pad the stats you quote above and don’t give a realistic picture of how we are doing offensively.

  24. blake May 24th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Montero should be on this team. Heyman says he’s bored at AAA so you know its true. When Chavez is ready, release Jones, send down Cervelli and call up Montero.

Have Dickerson as the 4th outfielder with Nunez as the super utility guy. Montero backing up Martin and DHing against lefties to.start out.

  25. Phranchise May 24th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Yankees are batting .245 with RISP,

Scoring position with 2 outs .214

Inn 7+ .231 BA fourth worst in the AL.

So numbers are there, but they don’t take advantage of opportunities and they don’t seem to come back or battle to the end, they actually get worse as they game goes along.

Those aren’t great characteristics of a team with this type of talent. Their pitching has been solid for what we have to be fair. But knowing the state of the staff going in, offense was supposed to carry this team.

  26. Irreverent Discourse May 24th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

WCYF – Have you gone through and cherry picked the rest of the leagues wins and losses like that, and then compared the Yankees to it? because that’s the only way what you said could have any meaning. Just saying it doesn’t make it true.

You need to take a statistics course and learn how sample sizes work.

  27. SoS May 24th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

I was one guy that was happy when Torre left and Girardi came in. I thought Torre showed too much favoritism to his veterans whether they deserved it or not. Im starting to see the same signs with Girardi. What the hell is Jones and Cervelli still doing on the team? Why did he change his mind about batting Posada 9th after he threw a temper tantrum? Youd think he would have stuck to his guns just to let him know who runs the asylum. Instead, he backed off and put his tail between his legs. What happened to every position is up for grabs? Whats the point of a minor league system if we never use it. Trades arent the only thing their good for.

  28. Captain Clutch May 24th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Jack Curry was just on Kay’s show. Kay asked him about the DH spot and he said he thinks the organization wants to give Posada a little bit more time to see if he will start hitting. He said this time also gives Montero a little more time in the minors. Kay thinks if Posada doesn’t start hitting soon they will make a move.

  29. DocTodd May 24th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

June 15th?? Holy smokes , you are patient!!

  30. Warning Track Power May 24th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Cappie-I think this makes sense. Here’s an idea: Yankees are “holding onto Posada” until Jeter gets his 3,000th hit. After that, Yankees will release Jorge or Jorge will man up and retire.
That move would free up a spot on the roster for someone like Montero.

I know this much-I can’t get so upset w/Jorge because he is not the everyday DH. He plays a few times a week, while some of the regulars get a turn as the DH for that “1/2 day off”.

  31. munson15 May 24th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

SoS…tough call on that one. I guess if it looks like he has it going, you stick with him.

  32. munson15 May 24th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

DocTodd…I think Jorge has earned that.

  33. michaels07 May 24th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

This lineup is a winner for the Bombers to-nite.

  34. blake May 24th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

I don’t think they’ll release Posada…..and I think they have enough flexibility where they won’t have to even if he doesn’t start hitting. He’s got more left I think than he’s shown and at the very least could be a veteran bat on the bench and emergency catcher.

  35. jackamir May 24th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Posada’s bat, RIP. Its time to move forward. Just the experience for one of the minor leaguers makes it worthwhile.

  36. michaels07 May 24th, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Posada will stay until Jeter gets his 3000 hit.

  37. SoS May 24th, 2011 at 4:06 pm

Vasquez has 17 bombs in 41 games(48 ks). Is he a AAAA player? Trade chip or call up?

  38. Erin May 24th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

I really can’t see them releasing Posada.

  39. Captain Clutch May 24th, 2011 at 4:08 pm

If the report is true that Posada’s son is having surgery at the beginning of June and he already told the Yanks he will need a couple of days off if he doesn’t start hitting maybe he would retire. I really doubt it but if he is still hitting .170 maybe he would rather stay home with his son and retire instead of playing knowing that he doesn’t have much left and this is his last year with the Yanks anyway.

  40. Irreverent Discourse May 24th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

    48k’s in 40 games with 10 walks? he’d make a hell of a closer…

  42. blake May 24th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

The prevailing thought I’ve heard on Vasquez is that big leauge offspeed stuff would eat him alive…..I don’t know enough about him to really comment though.

And I agree with Erin……I.really don’t see them releasing Jorge no matter what.

  43. Hassey May 24th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

What was the exact situation for each of Vazquez’s homer and Ks?

  44. Irreverent Discourse May 24th, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Were any of Vazquez’ home runs in blowouts? Those games don’t count.

I believe he hit all his homers vs. playoff caliber teams and his ks came from only teams #1s.

    —————–

I just checked and June 6th is an off day followed by a 10 game home stand. So the 6th would make sense. The home stand starts with 3 games against the Sox.

  48. SoS May 24th, 2011 at 4:17 pm

Posada will stay until Jeter gets his 3000 hit.

    ========

Damn!! That could take us to the trade deadline. I guess its better than if it was waiting for Cervelli to get his next base runner out attempting to steal.

  49. Joe from Long Island May 24th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Captain Clutch, @ 3:57 and 4:05 – What Curry told Kay is what I’ve suspected is the case. I think/guess their plan is to give Jorge every chance, up thru Memorial Day. He’s earned that, in his career. But, that will be two months of fairly regular ABs to show what he’s got. At that point, I think it will be Chavez (when he’s ready), and Montero. Jones will be cut, and Cervelli will go AAA or a deal, timing depending on when Chavez is ready to play.

It would be a tough nut to release Jorge. Maybe his son’s surgery is on his mind. It’s possible, though his son has had other surgeries. I don’t see the Yanks releasing him during that period. Later on, maybe he does call it a career, if he’s still at .170. He certainly doesn’t need the money. I don’t think he likes seeing his name with an interstate attached to it.

That’s a lot of ifs, and maybes, but that’s the situation.

  50. SoS May 24th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Who would you rather have? Kershaw or Felix? Would they cost about the same to get?

  51. joeman May 24th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Montero won’t be here until they expand the rosters or maybe because of a injury

  52. Captain Clutch May 24th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

They definitely wouldn’t release Posada. But I could see them playing him less and less and telling him he won’t play often and try to get him to retire. They would need him to realize it’s time and have him make the move instead of them doing it.

  53. Bronx Jeers May 24th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Why would Jorge retire? The guy earns like $2MM per month.

The Yanks could release him but I don’t see him quitting. Honestly what I think they want the most is for his LH stick to be more consistent. Righty hitting Jorge is pretty much gone.

He’ll at least stick around until Jorge Posada Figurine Night. Maybe that’s when he’ll bust loose!

    IE,
Their numbers are similiar. I know Kershaw is in the N.L. but I just like that hes younger and is a lefty. Either one would be great. Would it take more than cleaning out our minor league system to get one of them? Dont wake me up, im in a happy place.
