Soriano going to see Dr. Andrews

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on May 24, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees did not reveal the results of Rafael Soriano’s MRI, but those results are being sent to Dr. James Andrews and Soriano himself will go to see Dr. Andrews tomorrow.

The Yankees said they won’t announce anything specific until Dr. Andrews checks the results and talks to Soriano.

UPDATE, 6:19 p.m.: After announcing that Soriano would go to see Dr. Andrews, a Yankees official was asked whether today’s MRI showed something new. “It showed enough for him to go see Andrews,” he said.

    Definitely not good news.

When does Cashman get to say “I told you so”?

  3. Captain Clutch May 24th, 2011 at 6:00 pm

I like Nunez playing SS or 3rd base while Jeter or Arod DH as long as he can get the ball to 1st base. He can hit and gives them a spark at the bottom of the order and if he continues to hit then he should play more and more and make Posada and Jones earn playing time.

“Also, is it blasphemy to prefer the version ‘No Direction Home/Bootleg Series” version of “Visions of Johanna” better than the orginial?”

If that’s the same version that’s on the Live/1966 Royal Albert Hall/aka Manchester record, I prefer that one too.

    Reverse Judas!

  5. Irreverent Discourse May 24th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

Cashman did not want to avoid the Soriano signing because of injury risk. It was money and years he didn’t want to spend on a reliever. Don’t know where you guys draw the correlation there.

  6. BD (Boston Dave) May 24th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

    awful

    just awful

It’s tough to say “I told you so” if you’re Cashman because you ahve to assume this is jsut a case of bad luck.

I assume the Yanks did plenty of tests and a physical with Soriano prior to signing him.

I thought the contract with the 2 player option years was an embarrassment, but the fact that Soriano is hurt is hard to blame on anyone.

    just awful luck

  7. michaels07 May 24th, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Cash wanted the draft pick, it`s plain and simple

  8. michaels07 May 24th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

You build thru the draft. This year`s draft is exceptional.

  9. LGY May 24th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

LGY – You can’t, but when a 34 year old outfielder has microfracture surgery you have to ask yourself why you think he would stay healthy. That is not a problem that goes away, he has no cartilage on his knees. That didn’t change with the surgery, they just tried to pad it with scar tissue.

Soriano had no precursor surgery and was healthy for 2 seasons.

If that’s how you base your predictions, don’t bet the house.

    ————————-

You’re right. Soriano was healthy for 2 season, so he was a good bet to stay healthy.

Professional baseball pitchers with extensive histories of elbow and shoulder problems just go away and are in the past.

You also have outdated information on microfracture surgery. It is come a very long way in recent years.

    How do you know this?

One of the primary parts of evaluating how long and how much to pay someone is health risk involved.

  11. joeman May 24th, 2011 at 6:09 pm

    better hope he opts out

This is getting worse and worse by the post. By the end of the night we’ll be talking about funeral arrangements and telling sob stories.

Remember that time he threw the offense under the bus? Purely motivational. Raffy (his posthumous name) was a misunderstood genius. Rest in peace # 29 !

SoS – Considering the prospects Kershaw would haul in… even though i would rather have him as a pitcher going forward I would rather trade for Felix. Spending money is not as devastating as trading away prospects.

Please note I don’t believe these are possibilities, just entertaining the thought

    *********************************************

Glad to see you aren’t getting your hopes up, ID…

Granted it’s a SSS, but given the start Pineda has had to his big league career, it’s hard to imagine the M’s would want to separate King Felix and Prince Diabolical ~ a semi-decent duo to build around ;)

Can you say worst case scenario?
Lose draft pick for the privilege of paying a relief pitcher a huge sum of money to rehab for the next 18 months.

  17. G. Love May 24th, 2011 at 6:14 pm

He’s not opting out. He’s here for 3 years. Get used to it.

And Cashman wasn’t objecting to the player in the off season. He was objecting to the contract.

What’s done is done. However, I have the solution. Tell Marte and Feliciano to throw righty and tell Soriano to throw lefty and this is all fixed in a blink of an eye. Or make Swisher a pitcher since he now hits like one. The Yankees have tons of internal options!

  26. jpb173 May 24th, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Does anyone think that Kevin Whelan will get an opportunity for promotion while Soriano is out? He could help the 6th/7th inning role so that Robertson and Chamberlain can be pushed back to the 7th/8th inning without being overworked..

  27. LGY May 24th, 2011 at 6:17 pm

And Cashman wasn’t objecting to the player in the off season. He was objecting to the contract.

    ———–

You can’t separate the player from the contract.

There were numerous reasons not to sign Soriano. I’m sure they all were brought up by Cashman as his reasons for not wanting him.

  29. Irreverent Discourse May 24th, 2011 at 6:19 pm

LGY – I only assume (i know…) since they still paid him $35mil that at least his medical cleared ok… if it was injury risk I think we’d have heard about it by now. There was no talk all offseason about anyone thinking Soriano’s elbow would fall off.

Safer assumptions than the Yankees being incompetent, I think.

  30. Warning Track Power May 24th, 2011 at 6:19 pm

    terrible news.
soriano was counted on to lock up the 8th for 162 games & the playoffs.
never a good feeling when i read about a Yankee pitcher has an appt to

    What a stooge Levine is.

The Rays front office must be in hysterics.

  32. NYY fan in NH May 24th, 2011 at 6:20 pm

Losing a #1 pick for signing this guy was the biggest mistake! This is going to have a trickle effect down the entire bullpen.

  33. G. Love May 24th, 2011 at 6:21 pm

If they make Joba the 7th inning guy, we could have Jobertson Rivera, which I think I may name a dog, a plant or a character after.

    —————

There were numerous posters all winter pre and post Soriano signing expressing how much of an injury risk he was.

The Yankees are not incompetent. Randy Levine and Hank Steinbrenner are.

  35. RhapsodyInBlue May 24th, 2011 at 6:22 pm

I heard it all in the spring, all the reasons why.

    Why Cashman was over ruled.

    He’ll shorten the game.

He can take over for Mariano.

    Yeah ok,

  36. Joe from Long Island May 24th, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Well, in an attempt to put the best face on things –

This is the setup situation that Cash wanted – Robertson and Joba. He objected to the contract, but Soriano would have been icing on the cake. If he’s healthy, he’s a potential weapon. If not – I wonder if his contract is insured? If it is, is he costing the Yanks any money at all? Times like this I wonder if SJ has any insight. Too bad he doesn’t come here much anymore, he could really add something.

About the Mets – Newsday, today, reported that Fred and Saul Katz defaulted on mortgage payments on an office building in eastern LI, and creditors took it over. It’s only a matter of time before he loses control of something else…… (And, I think SNY is going to be part of the deal. Why else would anyone buy into them?)

  37. Laura - I Bleed Blue May 24th, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Cashman didn’t want to do the deal. The fact that it’s a bad deal because Soriano is injured (and has a bad attitude) doesn’t change that fact. He told them not to sign him. He was right.

  38. G. Love May 24th, 2011 at 6:26 pm

They also said Freddy Garcia and Colon were joke signings, Hughes would be a #2, Posada would be a great DH, etc.

Point being, not all expected results happen as expected.

Or, if you prefer, a flashback to July 23 2010, Visions of Dan Haren:

Ain’t it just like LoHud to play tricks
When you’re trying to be so quiet
    We sit here stranded
Though we’re all doin’ our best to deny it
And DeJesus holds a hand full of pain tempting you to defy it

Lights flicker from the opposite blog
In this one the rumors make fog
The sports talk station plays soft
But there’s nothing, really nothing to turn off

Just DeJesus and his surgeon so entwined
And these visions of Dan Haren
    That conquer my mind

How long before we see Manny Ban in the pen?

    ========================================

I don’t think we will see Banuelos in the Major Leagues until 2013. The Yankees have learned their lesson about bringing up pitchers before they have reached 150 innings in a season at the minor league level. They rushed Ian Kennedy, Joba Chamberalin and Phil Hughes to the majoes before they were ready and are now paying the price for it. Meanwhile Ivan Nova was allowed to develop in the minors and build up his inning total…and he appears to be more ready to deal with the stresses of pitching in the major leagues (even though his stuff isn’t as good as Joba or Phil’s).

I see them taking their time with Banuelos. He reached 109 innings two years ago, and probably will be asked to pitch no more than 130 innings this year and 150 innings next year before a callup is in order. Its a shame he missed so much time with the appendectomy last year…it threw him back an entire year.

  41. Chad Jennings May 24th, 2011 at 6:27 pm

Injury risk was certainly a very real risk from the very beginning of the Soriano contract. He has a pretty lengthy injury history.

As for the Visions of Johanna discussion, if you don’t consider cover version blasphemous, the Grateful Dead did that song really, really well. Gorgeous in every way.

  42. champ809 May 24th, 2011 at 6:27 pm

Personally I’d like to see the Yanks call up Kontos over Whelan as Kontos has better command and that wipeout slider….. Think Joba-lite.

Whelan has done a much better job of not walking the ballpark this year so far and has thrown the ball great for Scranton but were I making the call I’d leave him down there in that role a while longer and let his adjustments really sink in.

But it looks as though for now at least Ayala will get more work ot of the pen and maybe Noesi sticks around a lot longer than originally thought.

  43. Joe from Long Island May 24th, 2011 at 6:29 pm

Rhapsody – I can imagine the Phillies front office is laughing themselves silly for the Rays signing Pat Burrell. Really, the only people who don’t make mistakes are the ones who don’t make any decisions. Mistakes are a part of life. It’s how you deal with your mistakes that’s important.

    End of philosophy lesson.

    ==============================================

Champ, thats not a bad idea. The only concern is whether Kontos elbow is ready for that much work at the major league level. I think he had Tommy John surgery last year and they want to go slow with him this year.

RAB had an article today that showed that Robertson and Mo have pitched a ton already. Hopefully Ayala can continue to ptich good and Girardi can use him in the 7th inning so he can give one Rob/Joba a day off so they don’t both have to pitch every night.
