Soriano out into July

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on May 25, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Dr. James Andrews’ diagnosis of Rafael Soriano’s right elbow turned out to be inflammation in a ligament. The downtime will be at least six to eight weeks. After two weeks of rest, the reliever can begin a throwing program. Then, according to GM Brian Cashman, he could be throwing to hitters after four to six more weeks. Cashman didn’t specify whether that meant throwing to hitters on a rehab assignment or back with the Yankees.

Ayala is pitching pretty well and Noesi is doing the job as the long man.

  10. Yankee Trader May 25th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

I see where Hughes was put on the 60 day and the Yankees claimed Kaneoka Texiera [added to 40 man roster], who originally was a Yankee when traded with Swisher.

Didn’t get to watch or listen to the game today but just reviewed the play by play.

Martin stole 2nd of Jose Molina. Impressive?

Did Jones hit any offspeed pitches for his 2 homeruns?

Probably doesnt matter, since ESPN already predicted in January that the Sox would be 162-0 and win it all.

So 21 losses or 1 loss, doesn’t really matter.

    (Sarcasm)

  15. GreenBeret7 May 25th, 2011 at 4:50 pm

Getting Hughes and Soriano will help an already strong rotation and bullpen. It gives them added insurance and flexability.

This west coast swing will be followed by a homestand against the RSox, Cleveland and Texas. Testing ahead.

  24. GreenBeret7 May 25th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

There are no super teams in baseball this year. MLB wanted parity and they got it….a bunch of .500 teams.

The schedules over the last 2 years for NYYs were designed to slow them down. It’s not who they play, it’s the amount of excess travel. It’s been loaded with 3 trips to the west coast and so far this year, nothing but 6 game road trips and 6 game homestands.

  31. Nick in SF May 25th, 2011 at 5:03 pm

“The Yankees have now scored 15 more runs than any other team in the AL.”

Typical cold, bloodless stat-quoting with no real-game context.

Many of those runs were scored in games in which they scored a lot of runs.

Take away all of those high-scoring games and then what have you got? You’ve got a team that has actually scored far fewer runs than any other AL team when you include all of the other teams’ runs but only some Yankee runs.

It’s like you never even look up from your stat sheet and watch the games. This team is in serious, serious trouble.

  32. Irreverent Discourse May 25th, 2011 at 5:06 pm

Nick – Typical misuse of stats by someone not practiced in using them. You can’t just eliminate numbers you don’t like looking at for one team and not for the rest of the league. Show me the list you made to figure out that the Yankees would still not be leading the league in runs with blowouts eliminated across the board.

  33. LGY May 25th, 2011 at 5:06 pm

    Nick

  34. Irreverent Discourse May 25th, 2011 at 5:06 pm

Wait… damnit. You got me. :(

  35. ac1 May 25th, 2011 at 5:07 pm

Nick, any argument can be made if you remove stats that back your theory?
You cannot just take out the high scoring games.
Should all teams take out the high scoring games?

In that case, the Yankees still score the most runs.

Yes they have been awful with RISP and scored low in many games, but as frustrating as that low point has been, they are still in first. Tampa will not hang on (they have been playing better than they are), and Boston will pick up.

It was never a question Sox and Yankees would be the top two teams at the end, and i doubt it is now.

  36. Irreverent Discourse May 25th, 2011 at 5:07 pm

It’s a shame the Red Sox scored so many runs today and now none of them will count.

A team would do well to stop scoring around 6 or 7 runs to maximize their perceived performance.

  39. Irreverent Discourse May 25th, 2011 at 5:14 pm

The true measure of any offense is the wins column. Nothing more, nothing less. it encapsulates everything you ask for from the other stats, and gives the purest truth of production.

The number of runs scored in a season at any given time is irrelevant. The only runs that matter are the ones that won you baseball games. “1 more” than the team you are playing. I like to call these runs Wins.

For the Yankees right now that number is 27 wins in 48 games. That puts them tied for 4th in baseball. 2nd in the AL. 1st in the division.

Surely they could hit better and win a few more games going forward… looks like everyone else in the league should be worried since this offense is winning and is so awful and inconsistent right now.

Braves want another hitter, but they still need Lowe this year.

Will the Yankees get more than 31 innings from Soriano, which is all they got from Marte for the 3 year/12M contract? Over or under?

  55. Irreverent Discourse May 25th, 2011 at 5:26 pm

joeman – People can’t handle AJ’s inconsistency, I can’t see how Lowe is going to be any better. I think the Braves would certainly listen to offers… but they should be contending for the wild card again this year if Heyward ever gets healthy. I don’t know if they’ll be selling.

  56. Warning Track Power May 25th, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Regarding Soriano: I guess this is the best news the team could have hoped for. Returning this season is better compared to having season ending surgery. Perhaps a very, very fresh arm in late July will work to the Yankees advantage.

For what it’s worth, Paul O’Neill today was outstanding. Part of me wished the game was 18 innings because I don’t ever grow tired of his humor.
The story from 2002 and Joe Torre was fun to hear.
His admission that he still receives royalties from Seinfeld was hilarious.
O’Neill makes Kay a lot more tolerable over the course of a game.

  57. Irreverent Discourse May 25th, 2011 at 5:31 pm

LGY – The only conclusion i can draw from that is if the Yankees score 8 runs in a game they’ll win the world series.

  82. blake May 25th, 2011 at 6:18 pm

Jeter plays around 1,300 more innings a season than Rivera does. Its an apples and oranges comparision. Rivera is the greatest ever at what he does …..but he affects 1 inning in about 1/3 of the games.

  83. Tom in N.J. May 25th, 2011 at 6:20 pm

Closers are only useful when you have the lead. It’s the nature of position.

Rivera has pitched in 5 PS series with an ERA of 0.00 that the Yankees lost. He is a great post season player and a great Yankee, there’s nobody else I’d want to see out there in the 9th with a lead in October…

I wouldn’t make that trade of Swisher for Lowe. Derek Lowe’s on the backside of his career. He’ll get clobbered in the AL East. Swisher is mired in a gosh-awful slump. I saw his last AB in the game, and he was trying to jerk everything. He was opening up his hips way too much. Very typical for somebody mired in a slump. IMO (take it with an entire saltshaker) is that he needs to follow the Kevin Long system – don’t move your feet, rotate thru the hips; and try to go up the middle, the classic advice for breaking out of a slump.

Swisher is fixable, and still in his prime years. Lowe is at the end of his career. I wouldn’t make that deal.

If you can take the time to stop hating Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, and Andy Pettitte I would love to hear you tell us why Mo was more valuable to the Yankee dynasty than those three.

I expect he’s searching for an answer at this moment.

    Joeman,

Uhm don’t know…..they need a CFer pretty bad and Gardner would fit nicely atop that lineup……they are loaded with pitching organizationally as well…..don’t know but seems fair to.me.

okay, so I pushed for them to DFA Jones earlier today – maybe I am the reason he came out and hit a couple of dingers. My wife believes I control the weather (like I get in trouble for saying that it won’t rain and then it does), so why not also home runs from under performing outfielders?

I think DRob is in for a shock. It’s a nice thing he’s done, starting that foundation. The Sports Illustrated cover story about Tuscaloosa is terrific, by the way, in case anyone’s interested in checking it out.

    Question

Did Michael Kay say something during a game in the past few weeks that Catholics might find offensive? I promise I am going somewhere with this.

    yawn

    ———-

Mo’s impact on the Yankee Dynasty and the success of the team over the past 16+ years is overrated and overstated.

    ——————————

Mo is the greatest relief pitcher of all time. That said, relief pitchers are the most overrated players on the diamond. Closers spearheading that ridiculousness. People make it seem like without Rivera close games would have all been lost. The Yanks would have had a lesser closer and the Yankees still would have had insane offensive production and good SP. That is in no way a knock on Mariano.

The most important player on the Yankee dynasty teams was Jeter or Posada IMHO. Maybe even Bernie. HoF hitters from typically weak offensive positions are almost irreplaceable and the dynasty probably doesn’t happen with average production from those 3 spots.

    ““““““““““““““

How long can this first-place team afford to carry a light-hitting rightfielder that keeps striking out. They need to get someone like the ghost of Marcus Thames in there to provide some offence and defense (okay, that’s pushing it a little)|…

  106. joeman May 25th, 2011 at 7:23 pm

bad news….Red Sox top 3 are on fire

Lester has won 7 of his last 8 starts

Beckett’s ERA is 1.69 on the year

Buchholtz in his last 5 starts only gave up a total of 6 runs earned
