I think you meant Arod as DH and Nunez at 3rd.
No Gardner
No. They have two 3b to really make sure bautista doesnt pull the ball.
It’ll be crowded at 3B today.
Nice to see Joe really give Nunez a shot recently given the struggles of other players on the team.
The bench will be firmed when Chavez gets back.
We were talking early on about how great the bench is.
Chavez, Nunez (hopefully Montero and someone to replace Jones)
My guess is the Yankees will look for a RF, Left handed pen arm, and one of those top rotation starters.
If the Twinkies stay down, look for Liriano talk to come up (though i wouldnt trade Montero for him)
Problem right now is no team is really out.
I know this is debatable, but i still would try to talk the Mets into giving up Santana and his contract.
Next year, to have CC/Santana at the top of the rotation?
And Pettitte has not ruled out 2012, so CC/Santana/Pettitte?
I’d sign up for that, even with Santana’s injury history.
Tom in N.J. ? funny, I?ve had the same thought about Longoria and Wright for a while now.
Not to sound like Fred Wilpon, I think Wright is a very good ML player, but not a superstar. Longoria, now a few years removed from the initial hype (same time as the Rays becoming relevant), has been slowed somewhat, like Wright, by injuries here and there, and maybe trying to do too much to compensate for a weak lineup.
As we all know, it?s one thing to play well at the quarter pole. It?s another to rise to the challenges of a long season and remain on top.
truthfully, i am not the biggest gardner fan, but i dont see how you sit him at this point.
he had the second highest average on the team.
Nunez is going to hand the ball off to Alex so he doesn’t have to make the throws.
LGY,
Good call on solving Nunez throwing problems. Problem solved.
LGY, Didn’t Jeter get a big hit the night before?
—–
I don’t think one hit changes the large sample of not hitting RH. Especially hard throwing ones like Francisco.
Someone mentioned when Joe is going to start considering ph’ing for Jeter late in games. I’m afraid that is going to take a long time to insititute, mostly to get Jeter to accept it, and more suffering for all involved. Not everyone is like Don Mattingly, going to Showalter and telling him to demote himself in the lineup.

I wish he’d actually do that.
would rather have GGBG than Jones, but I like the idea of an extra 3B
They used to have someone run out into the outfield and get the ball from Pujols. That was hilarious.

Jeter hit the ball hard against Francisco last night, the SS made a good play and threw him out-there wasn’t much difference between that one and the next two that went through.
The DP in the 7th was his 1st in about a month, that was a bad job of hitting in that situation because the pitch was down and away.
The night before he hit the ball hard 3X and had nothing to show for it, that’s baseball.
Jorge Vazquez leads the international league with 17 homers, 43 RBI, .633 SLG and .977 OPS with a .301 BA… isn’t that worth a cup o’ coffee?
ID, Roy White’s long toss distance was about 50 feet, anything more than that and it bounced…
I’d throw in a donut
More Red Sox are banged up.
JD Drew out of the lineup with a sore hanstring and Youk out with a sore hand.
Speaking of the bench, how long before Jones is DFA’d? I don’t see then carrying him long term. People discussed Posada being cut lose (obviously ain’t going to happen), but I am surprised that anyone would think that someone like him would be gone before Jones. With Dickerson playing well and looking like a decent outfielder, I don’t see then holding onto Jones. I worry that Chavez will remain healthy, but I imagine Jones will be gone if/when Chavez gets himself re-established.
Joe, it’s NYC, it has to be a bagel with a schmear
I think this is a last look at Jones. If he does another ofer Cashman will get the message if he hasn’t already.
does he also lead the international league in strikeouts? still a 4:1 K:BB ratio, ugly.
Bagel, schmear, and good coffee – heaven…….
This is definitely the last chance for Jones, IMO. He has a resume, so you give him a solid shot at producing. But, between his poor ABs, and Brett having to play the field late in games, he’s not bringing anything to the table. It’s just a matter of when, do they wait for Chavez, or maybe bring up Vazquez for his coffee and bagel with schmear.
Vasquez should definely be up ,dump Jones
no – Justin Maxwell leads the SWB Yanks in SO (67) to Jorge’s (48)
PacoDooley May 25th, 2011 at 11:12 am
Speaking of the bench, how long before Jones is DFA?d?
*************************
hopefully it’s very soon. My guess is when Chavez gets back, Jones will be gone.
Actually, Maxwell leads the league in SO. Jorge is 5th.
RiverAveBlues After April 19, Brett Gardner was hitting .128/.196/.191. Since then, .344/.423/.533 in 107 PAs.
With the off day tomorrow I don’t get sitting Gardner today. Jones should play as little as possible. (Im half saying this because I believe it and half so that maybe he’ll hit a homer because I said it)
LGY,
Jury still out on Jeter vs RHP…..I still believe
wow there are a lot of day games today

.250 .285 .300 this year.
.246 .315 .317 last year.
Yankees CC Sabathia became the first Yankees starter to earn a win in a walk-off victory since Andy Pettitte on 7/17/02 vs. Detroit. #YankeesFacts
Still don’t know why the let Thames go. That was a bad call by Cashman.
Who are they gonna go to thats better than Jones? Jones is doing exactly what they signed him to do, provide a little pop off the bench and spell a guy about once a week. He is making 2 million this year with a bunch more in incentives. His defense has been alright and he still has a decent arm. They aren’t bringing up Vazquez and having him sit the bench and platooning DH and not getting his at bats. Let’s get real.

When they end up trading for a RF, Swish will become the 4th OF.

Quick. What are Thames’ numbers this year?
thames stats are worse than Jones’ this year…
Po was supposed to hit LHP. Him not doing so changes the whole dynamic of the team with Jones and the DH spot.
LGY,
Quote his lifetime numbers……that’s what they are looking at. Look Im not blind …..I see what he’s done against righties the last couple of years……Im just not ready to say he wont figure out a way yet. Its a lot more complicated than it seems…..you can say it shouldn’t be but that doesn’t change the fact that it is.
Marcus Thames – .176/.222/.412
Nope, not missing that at all.

Really? The briuck hands in the outfield weren’t enough of a clue for you?
Any chance to rag about Cashman.
Blake
I’m not saying to bench him vs RH.
Pinch hitting for him is just the right move at this point until if/when he turns it around vs righties.
brick
When they end up trading for a RF, Swish will become the 4th OF.
–
Until then… (X X-cross fingers) who else we got? They KNEW Jones would bat around .200 and give them some pop. If… big IF… they get a right fielder better than Swish, then I see them DFA Jones, but a lot has to happen before then.
Jones better hit because his presence puts one of their best hitters on the bench in an otherwise shallow lineup.
This should get Swish going:
NotHankStein If Swisher doesn’t start hitting I’m trading him to the WWE for a pair of the Macho Man’s used tights & the fabulous Moolah
Jeter has like 30 more PA with RISP than mark teixeira
Hitting .170
Jones better hit because his presence puts one of their best hitters on the bench in an otherwise shallow lineup

And their best defender with a pitcher who pitches to contact on the mound.
Jeter has been awful. The only reason to play him is his defense.
(I never thought I’d say that.)
The problem is that Jones actually isn’t giving them the pop off the bench. They cannot use him as a pinch runner and they cannot stick him at anything but the corner OF spots, so they might as well try someone that offers more in terms of defence and speed.
I say he is gone when Chavez is back, and at worst, they hang onto him until the trade market offers them a better option in a few weeks.
And their best defender with a pitcher who pitches to contact on the mound.
___
Jones isnt a liability in the field.
Gardner is better now yes, but Jones isnt exactly Thames in the field.
Jeter has like 30 more PA with RISP than mark teixeira Hitting .170
——-
It’s why the, Tex sucks get him out of the 3 hole stuff is so dumb.
Hitting 3rd in this lineup is no longer a great place to hit. Neither Jeter nor Grandy get on base enough for it to be. And Grandy is frequently clearing the bases.
The only reason to play Jeter is because he’s the captain of the team, one of its leaders, and still the best SS they have…..other than that….
Jones isnt a liability in the field. Gardner is better now yes, but Jones isnt exactly Thames in the field.
——
Gardner is so much better than Jones in LF it’s not even funny.
Gardy is the best LF in baseball. Jones is ok out there but Gardner helps his pitchers a lot.
Jones isn’t a liability when compared to most LFers……but he is when compared to Gardner. Gardner nigh be the best LF defender i’m the game so it’s a big drop off unless Jones hits enough to warrant it….which he hasn’t come close to doing.
blake
As I said, his defense is the reason he plays (which means he’s the best SS), however, I don’t think anyone should play because they are the captain or the leader if they are not helping the team, and but for his defense, he’s hurting the team.
Jones was brought here to hit left-handed pitching, period. He’s hitting .189 with a .231 OBP against left-handers. Sometimes I wonder if members of the ‘Hall Of Lame’ even watch the games at all.
Gardner is so much better than Jones in LF it’s not even funny.

___
Point is Jones isnt a liability.
I’d rather have Gardner in the lineup since he is actually hitting right now, not just his better fielding.
Jones is in because there’s a lefty going, that has to be the only reason (not saying I agree because Gardner’s been hitting well and plays much better D). I’m sure he will be either PH for or defensively subbed where needed.
Who is in the Hall of Lame?
Name names!!
RiverAveBlues Cops fixed speeding tickets for A-Rod and George Steinbrenner. I am shocked – SHOCKED. http://nydn.us/kV0HUG
Rich,
We disagree ….there is more to the game than numbers show and Derek has always helped provide those things even when he was hitting great. I still believe he’ll figure out a way to be better offensively though against righties….
I love Nunez getting this PT
So cops fix speeding tickets for people that aren’t hot women? That can’t be true.
Blake
Do you think there are situations where Jetes should be pinch hit for?
Jones is going to get opportunities over the next few weeks in an effort to get him going. If he doesn’t get going, he’s gone. I don’t think there’s much more to it than that.
Yea, we could have Marcus Thames playing the field out there!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t you guys watch the games??!!?
blake
For the vast majority of his career, Jeter’s periods of not hitting great were very short.
Put me down for a large order of crow if that changes.
Girardi really likes Nunez. I would have liked to have seen Martin get the day off since yesterday was a night game, but that would mean that Cervelli would catch and we can’t have that.
better yet we could have Thames playing 3rd
My favorite Marcus Thames moment from last year was when he played 3B, made a great play to stop the ball and then proceeded to throw the ball to Jersey. LOL!
I’m baffled (new fav word. Thanks Casey Close) to learn that having some pull down at the station can make some infractions disappear. Big story.
They don’t trust Cervelli, Laura, with good reason.
LGY,
No not yet…..because one….I still have faith in him, and two because most games there isn’t anybody better on the bench.
Thames hit .288 with a .350 OBP, 12 home runs and 33 RBI’s in 82 games for us in 2010. Including hitting .300 against left handers. That’s worth a poor defender, he had 5 errors last year. Bad move to get rid of him for Jones.
If they weren’t going to play Gardner then they should have put Nunez in LF with the off day tomorrow.
Hmmmm…lots of complaining about Jeter and Jones. I’m thinking they’ll both have pretty good games.
Tough start for mitch talbot.
Sure didn’t take the Red Sox long today.
Nunez is not an outfielder, Girardi said as much less than 2 days ago.
If Thames was on the Yankees
WCYF: Thames was retained to hit LHP, period. 200/273 vs LHP. Sometimes I wonder if members of the Hall all of Lame watches games at all. And he can’t even play defense!!! Shoulda signed someone like Andruw Jones who can at least play the OF. Bad move to bring Thames back. Bad, bad boy Cashman.
I don’t know what stat book you are looking at. Thames hit .300 against left handed pitching for us. Don’t bother quoting me what he is doing for the train wreck that is the Dodgers – different everything.
I don’t think mitch talbot has it today.
YankeesPR Yankees reliever @DRob30 heading home to Tuscaloosa after the game today; has started foundation to assist relief: highsocksforhope.com

In a totally unrelated-to-anything note, today is National Tap Dance Day. lol
I’m so tired of you stat geeks quoting past numbers like they matter one bit.
The only thing that matters is what a player is doing *right now*, period, exclamation point, second exclamation point, period.
Thames: .176 .222 .412
Thames is stinking it up in the Toxic Atmosphere created by Yankee Legend Don Mattingly?
RIP Paul Splittoff
WCYF – Didn’t you tell me yesterday that past performance doesn’t mean anything and can’t be used to predict anything? Should I go quote you?
Indians Starter Mitch Talbot just stunk up the first inning – 7 runs. ouch.
If Joe really is this hesitant to sit martin, they might as well bring montero up. With great reason joe has no confidence in cervy, he couldn’t possible have less confidence in Jesus
New Post: Yankees pregame
Oh so brilliant LGY – when we let Thames walk we knew what he was going to do in a different league, in a different ballpark for a different team? Really? You evaluate your own players for what they are doing for you at that time not after the fact in different circumstances.
I get the impression Cashman knew 2010 Thames was a flash in the pan. Thats why he brought Jones in. I do think Jones could do better than he is, its hard not to root for the guy, when is he not smiling? But the main fact is, I disagree with everyone saying they are going to DFA him after the game if he doesn’t hit. They got nobody better than Jones to go to.
And even when Chavez gets back I still think Jones is around. Chavez is made of glass, or he has been for the last 5 straight years.
