Pitching matchups this weekend in Anaheim
Dan Haren cut a bullpen session short on Wednesday. He was supposed to be checked out on Thursday after the Angels returned from a road trip, but I’ve been flying this morning and haven’t seen whether there’s been any announcement about his status. As far as I know, he’s still the scheduled starter for Saturday.
Tonight
RHP Ivan Nova (4-3, 4.67)
vs.
RHP Jered Weaver (6-4, 2.10)
10:05 p.m., YES Network
Saturday
LHP CC Sabathia (6-3, 2.98)
vs.
RHP Dan Haren (5-3, 2.29)

Possibly facing 3 consecutive righty starters=Posada will get some at bats this weekend.
Very interesting.
Repost-
Cousins quote:
“As soon as the collision happened, I knew the way we hit, I immediately thought make sure he’s OK,” said Cousins, before Thursday’s matinee. “He wasn’t saying much but he was kind of groaning in pain. I called over twice [Wednesday] night. He was being seen by the medical staff the whole time. I waited around until after midnight and he was still in there. I left a message with both of his trainers. I’m going to send over a written message, too.”
Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy, a former major league catcher, fell short of calling the play dirty. He did suggest Cousins could have taken another route to the plate. Wednesday, after the 7-6 Marlins win, Cousins said Posey’s position did not leave a sliding lane.
If Posada doesn’t start producing, when lefty Chavez comes back, he might lose the AB’s against righties.
If Nova pitches well tonight, the Yankees might just sweep this series before returning home!!
YankeesPR Need new shoes? bid to raise $ @soles4souls; A-Rod, Jeter, @CC_Sabathia, Girardi, @RobinsonCano signed spikes http://ht.ly/51EVY
I’m sorry we lost out on Haren.
I don’t think there is any way Torre does a thing. That was a clean play. If it was a no-name catcher, no one would be talking about it. Giants are classless – especially Posey not taking the call of someone who wanted to apologize; if that’s what he did.
Catchers understand the risks; they try to block the plate and runners try to knock the ball out. The catchers are the ones with all the protective gear on.
Bush.
Again, I’m not as down on Nova as some of you are here and you know me, I’m the anti-prospect hugger.
Do I think he’s been lights out? No. But it’s too early to cut bait on him if we’re going to develop any kind of young pitching for this team.
The only reason I would take away his rotation spot is if Hughes is recovered and throwing filthy or if the Yankees think one of the options at AAA/AA has earned their shot.
With the way Colon and Garcia have pitched, the Yankees can afford to be patient with Nova and hope he shows some growth.
That said, he has to show some growth. The 5th inning hurdle comes and goes with him and he’s also prone to the big inning.
I still run him out there unless the Yankees feel they have something better for his spot.
As for Jorge, this is the weekend his bat has to wake up. Otherwise, by next week the Yankees will be ready to bench him full time. Since he won’t retire I wonder if they’ll ask him nicely to hit the DL for a couple of weeks or something. Without him being productive they have a 24 man roster and a disadvantage every night.

He was so far out of line that he almost completely missed the plate when he landed.
Cousins feels guilty for making a dirty play where he had a clear path to the plate.
Posey owes him no quick acceptance, but he will get over it eventually and accept the apology once his emotions calm down. This kids career was almost ruined for no reason, it’s not hard to understand why he may not be willing to hear it from Cousins yet.

*******************************
I miss Chavez and his production at the plate. Obviously he contributed and his time away from the team has been missed.
Posada needs to produce and now. This team has a deep bench. There are younger veterans on the bench that can produce/have produced.
I’m cheering for Posada all I can. I want him to succeed, but if he fails, Girardi really does not have a choice but to bench him
Do we even know if Chavez is coming back?
From rotoworld:
Dan Haren (back) will be examined Thursday after the Angels return home.
Haren had to cut shot his bullpen session Wednesday due to lower back spasms, even falling to his knees in pain. “I feel better now than when I did it to myself,” Haren said. “My lower back tightened up real hard in the middle of my pitching motion. I was in a little bit of pain. Just came out of nowhere. My bullpen was going well. I had long-tossed before I threw so I was stretched out.” Haren, who is scheduled to start Saturday, has never missed a start in his career. “Hopefully, I wake up tomorrow and it feels better,” Haren said. “It feels better already. I would be more worried if it felt worse. We got on it right away (with treatment). It (making his next start) kind of depends on tomorrow, depends on how I feel when I wake up. Even the doctors say you don’t know. You might wake up and feel fine. Or you might wake up all achy.” Jun 1, 9:20 PM

Sounds like even if he pitches he may not be able to go deep in the game.
Cousins definitely appeared to be prioritizing contact over touching the plate.
It looks like Brackman should be sent back down to Double A with the way he is pitching. Bring up Banuelos or Betances to Triple A.
Montero should be called up if Posada goes on DL. Why aren’t people shouting it out to the mountaintops that this kid needs to be promoted!! You sure won’t hear the NYY media say it that’s for sure!

************************************************
take it easy. when Montero is ready to be called up, the move will happen.
the last thing the Yankees want is to call up Montero, have him struggle and send him right
back down. what do you think that would do to his progress?
ID…I think the picture is a little misleading. Sure, he had some room to slide, but that is not how you are taught to play( in that situation) Posey was setting up to block the plate. He just didn’t get his body turned in the right position. This is only news because it’s Posey. Sabean needs to shut the hell up.
If Montero was playing well and needed to be called up, you would hear it. He isn’t and doesn’t.
I think Nova should have the full year to pitch – otherwise, why even give him a spot in the rotation? It’s not his fault the rotation is such that he’s the #4. Unless he completely implodes, of course, but I do not think that will happen
munson – I’m not defending Sabean, he can shut up. I’m defending Poseys right to be exactly where he was and not get plowed.
that is not how you are taught to play( in that situation)
Players are taught to avoid collision, not run out of the baseline and dive shoulder first into the catcher.
My main gripe with the play is not even the collision, that stuff happens… it’s the fact that he went out of the baseline to make the collision happen and should have been called out. The umpire blew this.
Where was Sabean’s and baseball’s outrage towards Sandoval last April 13th?
“Giants fans can start to get pumped about an exciting season-long ride.
The Giants will win some and lose some, but one fairly can predict they will not be dull. Nor will they fall into an offensive paralysis once they fall behind, one of the traits of the Giants’ recent teams.
Tuesday night’s result was not good for the Giants, who lost to Pittsburgh 6-5 after an inexcusable game-changing error by shortstop Edgar Renteria and a two-run rally in the ninth against Brandon Medders when they needed a “zero” to stay close.
But in defeat, the Giants showed spunk.
It surfaced when they overcame an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game, when Pablo Sandoval tried to carve catcher Ryan Doumit a new chest cavity in a collision at the plate, and especially when the Giants nearly erased a second three-run deficit in the ninth.”
There is a reason that the basepath and plate are in foul territory.
Wow, you guys are fleshing out some very compelling arguments for deadline targets. Sign me up for the camp that is interested most in Danks, followed by Liriano. I agree that the most likely acquisition is Danks because of many factors. For one, his youth. He could hang around in this rotation for a decade because he is more of a crafty pitchers than a power pitcher. Secondly, he has a strong track record for a young player. His handedness makes him desirable as well. Having a lefty in Yankees Stadium always gives the team an advantage. It would be nice to have him against the Sox as well because of all the lefties in their batting order, with Crawford and Gonzalez in it for the long haul. It will be interesting to see if Cashman can nab Danks for a lower-than usual price tag because of his struggles. As far as hitters…I’d like to see the Yankees grab DeJesus for Swisher or Swisher+ if that’s what it takes. I agree that the D’Backs will not trade Justin Upton during this year because they are in contention and he is a key part of their offense. DeJesus is in a walk year. Beane likes to cash in on players because he can’t compete on the free agent market.
Not having swing and miss stuff is really killing Nova. Pitch to contact pitchers are not going to survive in the AL Beast.
Give him the start tonight but to say that the Yankees have to just keep running him out there no matter what is not a very good take on the situation.
I think there are pitchers in this organization that have just enough talent as Nova to be a big league pitcher and I think they should just keep trying other people until they find someone who can get it done. Not getting through 5 innings = Not getting it done.
So sign me up for Danks and DeJesus. That would be an A+ trade deadline for Cashman in my grade book.
Liriano is hurt btw. Pass all day on him.
Or maybe Beane would balk at Swisher and insist on Gardner or Gardner+ for DeJesus. I’d do that as well.
The plate and basepaths are in FAIR territory.
So I guess if Cashman and the front office are truly targeting Danks and DeJesus, then Jesus Montero stays with the Yankees organization. No way do either of those players command Montero in return.
Still don’t think the White Sox are trading Danks w/ Jackson and Buehrle likely gone after this year. Someone’s gotta pitch for ‘em. Further, the Tribe probably going to let them back in the race anyway.
Swisher or Gardner for Dejesus?
:pukes:
Seriously, gross. Dejesus is a FA at the end of the year and no way is he worth a long term investment.
I was looking for a good David DeJesus fan fiction site.
Cousins sees Posey ready to catch the ball and block the plate, his job is to knock it out. He has a split second to make a decision. Posey was in front of the plate. I don’t think he went out of the baseline at all. If you watch the play live, you can see he is right in line with the plate.
The baseline is fair, the basepath where the runner is allowed to run between home and first and 3rd and home is in foul territory.
I once had a catch with DeJesus.
I’ll send Bret the glove I used so he can setup some sort of relic-shrine.
Swisher or Gardner for Dejesus?
——
I’ll pass
It’s amazing how popular some league average players are when they aren’t on the team you root for.
The Giants and Sabean should be quiet. Next time don’t build your offense around one player and you would be crying less about it. I understand being upset because Cousins went into him extremely hard and it seemed dirty/not necessary but there no rules against it so it’s going to happen. It’s usually the back up players doing stuff like that because the stars don’t want to get hurt.
DeJesus would be nice to have in this lineup right now. Long term, he’s the same age as Swish and there is no way in bloody hell Swisher is getting a long term deal with this team. He won’t even get his option picked up.
Mell,
The tribXe will let them back in……it depends on whaat the Tigers do. I think they would trade Danks…..but probably would take a strong offer and maybe one stronger than Cash would do.
Munson – you need to watch the replay again. Cousins last 2 steps were in fair territory and the collision happened a foot and ahalf in front of home plate, in fair territory.
The only reason a player is ever allowed to plow a catcher is if the path to the plate is blocked. It’s not a “strategy” to knock the ball loose.
Swisher and Gardner are both better than Dejesus.
Last 14 days for DeJesus…he’s heating up…maybe finally fully recovered from his injury.
.359 .405 .667 1.071
Over the past month, he’s matched his career numbers.
There is at least a 75% chance that Swish’s option will be picked up.
Blake,
Swisher and Gardner can’t hit the ball.
There is no way you can justify giving a hacker like Nick Swisher 10 million dollars.
DeJesus is a career 108 OPS+ player (8% above league average).
Swisher is a career 115 OPS+ player (15% above league average).
Does anybody want to see manditory slides into home.? That play has been in baseball for years and years……if you’re gonna be out you try to knock the ball loose. That’s baseball.
Swisher is a hacker. He is completely irrelevant in the post season.
Fine Rich, then you pay DeJesus 7 instead of Swisher 10.
blake – not my point, i want to see the play called properly. Cousins was out because he left the basepath. The players play the game the way it is called by the umpires, not by the rulebook. Umpires being lax on the rulebook has bred the ability for any player to run into any catcher regardless of position or necessity… with no consequence.
“Fine Rich, then you pay DeJesus 7 instead of Swisher 10.”
The Yankees already have Swisher, so they don’t have to give up players for him.
Swisher can’t hit? He struggled early this year but he has hit better than Dejesus his whole career.
His swing is SWISH CHEEZ
Does anybody want to see manditory slides into home.? That play has been in baseball for years and years??if you?re gonna be out you try to knock the ball loose. That?s baseball.
————
Blake .. im kinda torn on this. . . I think we need to look out for whats in the best intrest ( Health wise ) …of both players involved…….
If the NFL is cutting back on severe hits . . . Baseball needs too as well….. Theres no need in my mind to crush a catcher …..
If the Yanks aren’t going to pick up Swisher’s option(which I hope they aren’t) then Cash should call Beane and see if he would do a DeJesus for Swish deal. Then the A’s could pick up Swish’s option for next year. DeJesus isn’t a star but he is a nice player that would fit into this lineup. He seems like a good contact hitter when healthy. Then they could decide if they want to bring him back next year after seeing him for a couple of months in pinstripes.
Trading for Dejesus is a lateral move at best…..if they trade for a position player then it needs to be a real upgrade.
Captain Clutch,
+1
How often does Beane trade veterans for veterans, especially taking back the veteran with the higher salary?
Blake,
In a vacuum it’s a lateral move. When you replace Swisher with DeJesus in the context of this lineup, it adds an element the Yankees are missing – contact. DeJesus would be a far more consistent presence than Swish.
Why would the A’s pass on DeJesus to pick up Swishers $10m option?
If Swisher starts to hit again then picking up his option is a good deal…it’s a one year deal for a guy that can hit you 30 homers.
I’d trade Swisher for one of the A’s pitchers if they wanted to do that.
Why is everyone so enamored with DeJesus? Is it just the “grass is greener” syndrome, or what? He’s one year older than Swisher and doesn’t hit as well. Why trade for him?
Let him hit 30 homers for the A’s during their regular season…so there he can hide from playoff pitching and save himself the embarrassment.
A major point is on defense, DeJesus is a much better player on D than Swisher.
Big Al,
+1
Let’s see those WAR figures for Swish and DeJesus, Rich.
Dejesus is a better defender….but Swisher isn’t a butcher and they Yankees have 2 of the best outfielders in baseball in LF and CF.
Bret
What do you enjoy more, trade rumors or the actual games?
“Cousins definitely appeared to be prioritizing contact over touching the plate.”
i’ve always taken it as a given under the resent rules and the ones i grew up with that the idea was to knock the ball loose from the catcher if you could.
as a catcher that meant two hands on the ball and holding onto the ball no matter what when the collision occurred.
as a runner, if i thought i could knock the ball loose from an opposing catcher if it was going to be a close play , i would do it every time. if that’s against the rules it’s news to me.
even when a catcher ole’s a tag with a swipe, a well place spike can knock the ball loose. it’s not a position for the faint hearted. until they change the rules, knocking the ball from the catcher is part of the game.
DeJesus… What? Yankees are about power, and power in the corner spots. DeJesus? You can’t carry DeJesus and Gardner. Yankees don’t give starting spots to players like DeJesus. Swish has been bad this year but he hits for power and drives in runs when he plays well. DeJesus is 10HR a year guy. The last player I think about is DeJesus.
Why is everyone so enamored with DeJesus? Is it just the ?grass is greener? syndrome, or what? He?s one year older than Swisher and doesn?t hit as well. Why trade for him?
–
I don’t get it either . . .
You said basepaths and home plate. You didn’t say anything about the 45 foot running lane to first base. There is no running lane from 3rd to home. Change your name to Irrelevant Discourse.
This blog has turned into a “Why I hate [fill in name of current Yankee player]” or “Why [fill in name of current Yankee player] should be released” or “Why we should trade [fill in name of current Yankee player] for [some player on some other team who would never be available for what is being offered]. What a joke.
“He won’t even get his option picked up.”
————————
Wanna bet?
Rich,
Let’s see those figures stat guy. I want those TPS reports.
I’d trade Swisher for one of the A’s pitchers if they wanted to do that
===============================
I’m sure the A’s can’t think of enough ways to say NO to that idea…..unless we’re talking about Josh Outman or something.
If Swisher starts to hit again then picking up his option is a good deal…it’s a one year deal for a guy that can hit you 30 homers.
———————
Even if Swisher doesn’t get hot, the Yankees will pick up his option.
With Swisher’s track record, not a good bet that he just forgot how to hit.
what Randy said.
Unless Swisher bottoms out the rest of the season or some unknown trade presents itself the Yankees will pick up Swisher’s option.
Mell….I wasn’t being serious…I was just saying.
Swish Cheez sure forgot how to hit for a full season with the White Sox in 2008. He can surely forget how to hit again. For a full season. That’s inconsistency. You don’t dish out 10 million bux for him based on the chance that you might get the 2008 or 2011 Swish.

——————
How did Swisher hit in 2009?
I was there in Seattle and saw Swisher’s almost hr and his hr. One thing I noticed was swagger was back in his step. He had a different look at the plate than earlier in the season. I was not surprised to hear his game winning hr in Oakland. Now is not the time to get rid of him.
You think the Yankees are gonna lay a 10 million dollar bet on getting the 2009 Swish if he duplicates his 2008 campaign with the White Sox in 2011 with the Yanks?
Understood Blake.
“Let’s see those figures stat guy. I want those TPS reports.”
I love that I’m viewed as a stat guy even though I suck at math.
Swish: 18.7 since 2004
DeJesus:19.9 since 2003
Virtually identical.
10.25 million on a 1 year deal for Swisher or invest long term in a 32 year old David DeJesus?
Tough, tough choice.
Swisher is a LT .250 BA, and DeJesus is a .288 LT BA.
Yes, Swisher has more power, but it seems he’s forgot how to hit, especially with RISP. A good contact hitter will do more for the team than one that gets lucky once in awhile.
Blake-
I’m with you.
Whatever changes the Yankees make, be it to their rotation or position players, they should represent a significant upgrade or why bother ?
Baseball-Reference has DeJesus’ WAR at -0.6 this season.
Swisher’s is at 0.7.
DeJesus has the higher WAR. DeJesus fits this lineup better because they need a contact hitter. DeJesus will not earn 10 million bux. He’s cheaper, more valuable and fits the team better.
So why are we sticking with Swish again?
Wow, I thought BA went out of style about 20 years ago.
Next, we’ll see who has the most RBI and R.
We’re using career WAR here. BA should factor in as well, given the inconsistency of this current group of Yankees hitters.
Why are we keeping Swish again?
“DeJesus has the higher WAR”
He’s played more seasons, and frankly, if you understood the stat, there is no material difference.
MTU -
I’ll go with your earlier trades, although they will most likely never happen.
My fear is Cashman will do like he did last year, and apply bandaides, rather than make really significant upgrades.
$10 million for a corner OF on a 1 year deal is a good contract, especially for the Yankees.
1 year deals are ideal for the Yanks. They love 1 year deals even if they are for more money than they would typically pay that player.
There is no way the Yankees are declining Swish’s option unless he gets hurts. The 1 year deal presents too much flexibility for them.
If he doesn’t produce next year they will trade for someone else. That’s the benefit of not being invested long term in a player. If he does produce next year, then the 10 million is WELL worth it.
Rich in NJ,
Is WAR adjusted for games played?
Because although DeJesus has appeared in more years, his career games played is lower than Swish.
961 GP for Swish vs. 927 for DeJesus.
Al-
Bandaids are a lot easier to find I guess.
I just think we have a lot help coming internally.
Why toss away good prospects for marginal upgrades ?
We may not even need that much.
This is still the evaluation time. Cashman trying to decide what’s real from what’s not. What’s a true team need ?
I think the TD is going to be very interesting. Expecting several significant trades as always.
Will they be ours ? who knows.
Bret
The more you play the more opportunities you have to contribute to a win, but again, there is no real difference between them, except that the Yankees already have one on the roster.
Now is not the time to get rid of him.
===========
98 NYY,
I heard this saying once.
If its low, let it go.
If its high, let it fly!!
Flip him on a trade before the playoffs start. The better he plays, the more we get.
BTW, no on the 10 mil option.
How’d the test go, Bret the Hitman?
David DeJesus is so consistent that from 2007-2010 he put up two sub .800 OPS season.
He is so consistent that a 1/3 of the way through the season, he has a .734 OPS.
He is so consistent that he is on the verge of posting his 3rd sub .800 OPS season in the past 5 years.
Mike -
I agree, to a point, but as competitive as the AL East is, we can’t expect to finish on top by standing relatively pat, while other teams deal to get better, which they will.
Speaking of the White Sox and buying low. What happened to Rios? I thought he was an up and comer with all the tools? Is he someone you take a flyer on and hope Long can bring back his swing? Rios in right?
Rich in NJ,
So the truth is DeJesus has the higher WAR in fewer games. He fits this lineup better because he hits with more consistency, evidenced in his higher career BA than Swish. Finally, he will not cost 10 million bux next year.
So why are we sticking with Swish again?
ps
Nick, she did not purchase the tester last night. She said she will do it tonight. I think she wants to avoid it. She’s 4 days late and said she hasn’t been late since age 15. She’s 23 now. I know, more detail than you needed.
Dejesus’ contract is up at the end of the year. What makes you think that he’ll resign with the Yankees if they traded for him? NYYs don’t need another singles hitting corner outfielder.
Al-
Cashman will determine our needs and proceed to try to fill them.
He may not have the same focus we as fans do.
We have a lot to offer. It’s just a question of wether or not we can find a reasonable match.
What he finds may or may not be as sexy as some would like but we will get some help. I’m certain of that.
Bret
No, that’s noise.
DeJesus solves none of what ails the Yankees.
Why would the Yankees trade Swisher for Dejesus? Thats stupid. They would trade something else for Dejesus and have both of them.
10 mil per year for a guy batting a quarter and zero in the playoffs is not a bargain IMO.
Does DeJesus get hurt a lot?
He’s only played in 150+ games once.
WAR, cost, fit. DeJesus.
What is the advantage of Swish given these facts?
I seriously want to know?
Is it just because maybe you like Swish’s goofy personality?
“10 mil per year for a guy batting a quarter and zero in the playoffs is not a bargain IMO.”
You could take a tiny slice out of the career of almost any player in MLB history and then (falsely) conclude that he is overpaid.
ps

Are we still talking about Swisher?? Ill have to decode this. Give me some time.
SoS-
For quite a while A-Rod sucked in the playoffs too.
Then he didn’t.
Swish could break thru at any time.
Just sayin’.
You can take a tiny slice or a big slice of Nick Swisher but in the end, either way, you end up with SWISH CHEEZ. I like the guy. Bad fit.
“What is the advantage of Swish given these facts?”
1) It costs nothing to get him.
2) Over the last two seasons:
2009: .249 .371 .498 .869
2010: .288 .359 .511 .870
David Dejesus’ playoff stats are worse!
“You can take a tiny slice or a big slice of Nick Swisher but in the end, either way, you end up with SWISH CHEEZ. I like the guy. Bad fit.”
This is just non-factual nonsense.
If I don’t get my $25, can you name the baby after me? You can leave out the “in SF” part.
Rich,
If you replace Swish with DeJesus, it costs nothing to make that substitution. You go for the extra 40 points career BA and the cheaper long term price tag.
Is it just because maybe you like Swish’s goofy personality?
========
Swish is the new clubhouse king after Damon left. Its tough getting rid of those guys.
Changing the subject for a second. What ever happened to the championship belt?
I’m out.
Have a good day everyone.
Rich in NJ,
You have to admit brotha…the moniker “SWISH CHEEZ” is kind of original.
How about we post all David Dejesus related comments in the David Dejesus thread from yesterday.
Nick,
Also, my tenants are late and we had some issues with a repair order just two weeks into the lease agreement. I hope they’re just using up the grace period and not lemons.
Dejesus’ WAR is skewed, on fangraphs atleast, by positional adjustments from when he played in Centerfield.
Dejesus 37.1 offensive WAR, 26.1 fielding WAR
Swisher 87.6 offensive WAR, 6 fielding WAR
50 oWAR points for 20 fielding WAR points at a position the yankees dont need great fielding? Not a good trade
“If you replace Swish with DeJesus, it costs nothing to make that substitution. You go for the extra 40 points career BA and the cheaper long term price tag.”
How so?
“You have to admit brotha…the moniker “SWISH CHEEZ” is kind of original.”
I shudder to think of the play on words that DeJesus’ name would inspire if he underperformed here.
Tom in NJ -
What playoff stats for Dejesus are you talking about?
It was a joke, bret.
Good point, JF.
Blake,
Ok, let’s talk about John Danks.
Does KW demand Montero?
MTU,
Just heard yesterday that Kate Hudson got hitched. Is there a plan b for Swish making a difference in the playoffs?
Somebody please tell me what the hell happened to Alex Rios and would you go after him hoping Long makes a difference.
Wasn’t Weaver 6-0 at some point in April?
Now he is 6-4?
Means the Angels aren’t hitting very well these days.
Later.
DeJesus’s career splits vs LHP aren’t that good .268/.333/.366/.699
Bret,
Probably at first…..no way Cashman does that though….no clue whether he’d drop the price or not.
DeJesus also can’t hit LHP.
You would have to platoon him.
Ok, let’s talk about John Danks.
Does KW demand Montero?
–
Maybe, but he won’t get it. KW is the kind of GM that will make a trade, and keep working a trade until its gets done. Not getting any of the B’s or Montero shouldn’t phase him.
SoS – Rios has possibly the worst batting stance in baseball
Tom beat me to it
David Dejesus has been a want on this blog for 4 years now. I believe he is ranked the #1 all time most wanted trade target in Lohud history. Over Randy Johnson, King Felix, Doc Holliday and of course Bronson Aroyo.
DeJesus has a .266 OPS vs LHP this season.
266!!
OK, Bret, let me know.
June 8th will be the 6-month anniversary of Carl Crawford signing with the Red Sox.
Hi SoS
I like Bronson Arroyo! Maybe we can get Bobby Abreu back, I like him too!
ID,
Rios batting stance worked for years. Did he finally realize it sucked?
Hello u.k.,
Hope everythings going well in your neck of the woods. I remember Brandon I believe coming hear and making a petition to get Arroyo and that lefty from the Giants(i think his last name was Gonzalez). Abreu was not all liked because he smiled too much. Needed to work on his serious face. Cano is still trying to perfect it.
SoS – Something is wrong with his feet, I don’t think he can push off properly anymore.
JF,
From William’s perspective though….why would you trade your best pitcher and probably best trade piece unless you are getting quality in return. I know he’s a FA after next year but I doubt his trade value will ever be lower…..he could have a good 2nd half and bring more this winter perhaps.
Some interesting Montero splits:
vs Left .359 39 9 14 1 1 3 7 3 6 0 0 .419 .667 1.085

DH vs lefties, YS is away from Scranton….most of their games are at night…..perfect!
Off topic, but very important: today is National Donut Day.
http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/06.....donut-day/
I went to a local donut shop yesterday and while I was there a cop came in.
I took a photo of him pointing to the donut(s) he wanted in the display case.
Not as good a pic I snapped a couple years ago of 3 police cars in the parking lot of a Dunkin Donuts in Salisbury, Maryland, at dawn.
Nick-very nice.
You can’t even compare Nick Swisher to David DeJesus.
People here are so fickle. Last year Swisher was called everything from one of the most productive outfielders in baseball to “this decade’s O’Neill.” This year, after 8 bad weeks in the context of a productive career both here and his entire career, he’s garbage.
You can’t even really try to say that Nick Swisher and David DeJesus are similar offensively. Swisher has more power, better plate discipline, and more ability to drive the ball into the gaps.
DeJesus hits for a better batting average and strikes out less. Big deal. Not enough to trump the other advantages Swisher has over him.
I really can’t believe that we’re having this discussion.
This feels like the All-Star break. Haven’t played a game in seems like forever.
This sets up CC for rubber game v Boston next Thursday.
An off day before, in the middle, and at the end of a west coast trip… I wish it was like this every time they went West.
I also said yesterday I don’t understand the whole conception of platooning Swisher.
You can’t extrapolate based on 120 at bats that he’s a “worse” hitter against lefties when he’s been a pretty balanced hitter from the left and right his entire career. He traditionally hits for more average and draws more walks from the right side, but for much more power from the left. He’s been bad in general this year but his entire career shows a guy who doesn’t need to be platooned at all and whose numbers against RHPs will return to his career norms with more at bats.
Its the same thing with people who want to platoon Posada. I really don’t think we’re ever gonna see him come out of his funk anytime soon if Girardi keeps platooning him. He’s better from the right side and has been his entire career, but yet Joe thinks that 25 at bats against them this year is enough of a representation to determine that he should be playing only against lefties in a position he’s never played before this year.
I don’t get it.
Whats the feel on Edwin Jackson?
great timing Erin
I just got back from DD w/ an iced coffee and a donut
Nick
where are the cop/donut pix?
Cop/donut pix are the same place as all the pix I took of CC and Joba a couple nights ago… on my cameras.
kate-very cool.
I’m thinking I’ll have to swing by Dunkin’ Donuts on my way home. Coffee and a donut will work for supper, right???
Soeaking of pictures.
Can I talk politics for a second.
How does somebody not know if a naked picture is really him or not? Or if hes ever taken a naked picture of himself? I know every polaroid picture that I have taken or someone has taken of me(i might have been eating a donut in one of them). Dont know where they are but I know I was in them. You have to be a real Weiner to not know.
Erin
that would work for me
Nick
that was wonderful that you got to see CC and Joba
Question for all the EAST COAST Yankee fans here:
How are dealing with the very, very late starting times the last week? Can not be fun to see the 1st pitch happen around 10 pm local time and the final pitch of the game around 1 a.m. or later.
I’m not really big on autographs, but when I told my brother I was there he badgered and peer-pressured me, so I ended up getting both CC and Joba to sign my ticket stub to Tuesday night’s game.
They also both posed for pics with me, which to me is a much better souvenir of the occasion. I also got a pic with the Mayor of Vallejo, just for kicks.
I had some fairly lengthy and illuminating conversations with CC about his plans for opting out of his contract or extending it, and I also had a fascinating conversation with Joba about starting vs. relieving. I wish I could share what they said, but I really can’t due to the confidential and imaginary nature of the conversations.
NSF,
Is C.C. opting out? Blink once for yes, twice for no.
Nick-that’s so cool!!
BTW, I think you should provide us with a transcript of these imaginary conversations. We won’t tell!
How does somebody not know if a naked picture is really him or not? Or if hes ever taken a naked picture of himself?
==================
Usually if it’s a picture of one’s naked face, one can tell.
WTP
This WC trip hasn’t been as bad since 2 of the games were day games, and some of the later games were over the Memorial Day weekend, but in general I hate the WC trips.
One if by land, two if by CC?
CC’s autograph is pretty cool, and he had his own big marker pen, since he was signing lots of stuff for lots of people. Joba, I think, was just tagging along and supporting his buddy; he got a good amount of attention, especially from people like me who were there as Yankee fans and not members of the local community, but he wasn’t rock-star mobbed like CC was. So his signature was with my ballpoint pen, it looks a little silly next to CC’s.
wieners wiener is the wiener in question and don’t they all look alike?
No CC isn’t going to opt out….he’s going to be extended 2-3 years before it’s made public that he has.
I much prefer the late starts.
I work long hours and usually miss most of the game.
Look forward to the west coast trips!
They aren’t letting CC go anywhere….that I feel sure of.
I prefer the late starts on the weekend
They are rough through the week.

probably a family decision.
My question was specific to this West Coast trip.
Very happy that I am out of the west coast where these games have started either at 1 pm or 7 pm.
Some interesting Montero splits:

The other day I saw that Scranton was playing a 10:30 am game. I don’t know if they play those often but if they do then I can understand the low numbers for day games

anybody have an opinion on the date of jeter3000?
i think he gets it at home vs Texas, if not then on the road vs cubs or reds.
some say vs colorado at home after the road trip. seems late to me.

could be in the cards. i got tix for that game a few weeks ago. happy bday!
Mick-I don’t have a good answer for you.
My hope is he gets the 3,000th hit at home. The Yankee fans deserve that.
If Jete gets that hit on the road, I’m sure the fans would give him a standing ovation.
Just won’t be with the same intensity.
Imagine the roll call at home when Jeter takes the field the inning after getting 3,000
anybody have an opinion on the date of jeter3000?
——————-
Unless he has a couple of 2 hit games against the Angels, Sox and Indians then it will probably happen against the Cubs. That would really stink if it’s not at home.
The way a lot of fans have turned on him it probably would be more fitting for it to happen on the road.
I think Jeter slumps next week and hits 3000 on old timers day, because that’s how he rolls.
Lets fast forward to next year. Alex has 2728 hits. Does he get to 3000 by the end of next year?
Has anyone noticed since winning the championship, he’s referred to more as Alex than Arod

Doesn’t seem so bad waking up on five hours sleep when they’ve won…but those first two defeats in Seattle were a real killer. Had to drink five cups of coffee the next day just to make it through to first pitch the following night.

actually, that would work too since I’m *hopefully* going to the game at Wrigley on the 18th. But knowing my luck, he’ll get it on the 17th.
Erin-
You might see Jeter’s hit on your birthday based on his average current hits/game!
Jeter enters this weekend’s series against the Angels with 2,984 hits, having opened the road trip 8-for-24 against the Mariners and A’s to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Jeter is averaging 1.11 hits per game this season, putting the projected date for No. 3,000 at June 18 in Chicago against the Cubs.
But when you look at his recent performance and not his slow start in April, Jeter is averaging 1.25 hits per game since May 2, a pace that moves the projected date for No. 3,000 up to June 16 against the Rangers – the final game of the Yankees’ 10-game home stand.

Yankee Trader-now I’m actually kind of hoping it’s on the 18th instead of the 16th. Seeing it person would be oh-so-cool.
That is if the guy who is working on getting me tickets comes through. LOL
Old Timers Day has always been on Saturday afternoon for as long as I can remember.
OTD is on Sunday 6/26
Will Jeter’s 3000th hit be:
a. infield single
b. pop-up single that dumps in front of an outfielder
c. a single that was initially ruled an error
d. a double down the right field line
e. a homer over the right field fence
f. none of the above.
g. all of the above???
Look at that-it’s Mr. Party in the USA
RiverAveBlues Good luck with that, Cleveland. RT @MLBastian: 1B Nick Johnson will be in the lineup tonight for Double-A Akron.
I can see it now….Jeter gets a trademark single through the 34 hole for 3,000 and LGY and Jerkface immediately quote that his ground ball rate just went up
Can the Captain maintain his current pace vs. three RHP in Anaheim?
Hopefully so.
It wouldn’t hurt for the Official Scorer to be generous on any questionale infield dribblers or misplayed grounders.

If the stars are all lined up, a think the perfect hit would be a line drive to RF, over the RF’s head, one hop against the wall for a stand up double!!!
Just in case, they’ve invited Jeffery Maier to all the games in the home stand.
I think Jeter will be stuck on 2,999 for a few days, and then in his first at-bat of some game he’ll again get hit in the hand with a FB. Broken knuckles, crushed hand bones, never able to hold a bat again.
If Jete’s hit comes on the 16th I’ll be at the game, in RF, 4 rows from the field. So, I’m hoping for it to be a GRD or HR right to my seat! lol. Though I wouldn’t mind if he hits it before that date.

4:45 PM — Austin Romine, who was run over during a home plate collision last night by Altoona’s Travis Scott, is injured…no word on the extent or nature of the injury. I’ll have more when I get more.
Another catcher injured. Hopefully, it is a minor injury.

You are welcome. Hopefully, we get a more detailed update soon. Romine has been playing so well that it would be a shame if he is out for too long.
this thing about collisions at the plate is so ridiculous. it has been apart of the game since its inception. why are we paying extra attention to it now? because the Giants golden boy got hurt? its ridiculous and now every collision is being treated like the end of the world. what are they going to do? ban it? make it so that if the catcher gets the ball before you arrive you’re automatically out? get out of town with this crap.

I liked your comments from last week. Good job, LMAO at those kind of posts, how lame.
Suprised to see Stubhub actually selling tickets lowering than face value if you would have bought them directly from the the Cubs.
Result of baseball attendance being down is really evident.
I don’t give a rats behind what you think “Little Ole Al’. But then again that’s probably to simple for you to figure out.

Talking to yourself again? Do people, that haven’t posted in over an hour, know you are talking about a post from several days ago, and which one. I think you are talking to yourself again “Bobby the Boob”

Off to the BBQ, dinner calls.
Have a good night “Bobby the Boob”
Sure thing ‘Simpleton’. I forgot you are the wannabe blog authority. Instead of making your dumb, childish comments perhaps you should learn to ‘scroll past’ if you don’t like it, especially since my post was in no way directed at you. That’s probably tough for you since your computer mouse more than likely is so old it doesn’t have a wheel on top of it to scroll with.
But then again just consider the source. LMAOAY !
