Sabathia wins his fourth straight

CC Sabathia is rolling. The Yankees ace has won four straight, pitching at least eight innings in every one of them. Tonight he was one out away from his second complete game in the past two weeks, and he settled for a 3-2 win that assured the Yankees a winning record on this road trip. Alex Rodriguez’s two-run home run in the sixth inning made the difference, breaking a tie and giving Sabathia the lead he needed. Mariano Rivera entered only after back-to-back two-out singles in the ninth. He got the save with one pitch.

The Yankees have been very close to sweeping on this trip.

  2. LGY June 4th, 2011 at 11:46 pm

Still very early but CC putting himself towards the top of the list for the Cy tonight.

  3. TheStraw June 4th, 2011 at 11:46 pm

Where are all the “not an ace” bozos now?

  4. stuart a June 4th, 2011 at 11:47 pm

    mo 1 pitch 1 out.

CC is a stud…. martin down to 230′s at the plate. i would not give him that 3 year deal yet!!!!!just foolin I would have never given him a 3 year deal but some of the shrewd talent evaluators on this site wanted to after about 60 AB’s.

martin is serviceable. very good fielder, not a 6 hitter but since jorge and swisher have been so bad for now he is hitting 6th.

  5. LGY June 4th, 2011 at 11:47 pm

CC was even more impressive when you consider that he did it with only 6 fielders behind him.

  6. Rich in NJ June 4th, 2011 at 11:48 pm

CC may not be the best pitcher in MLB for any one game, but over the course of a season and the playoffs, I’m not sure there is another pitcher I’d rather have…ok, maybe Felix, but that’s it.

  7. blake June 4th, 2011 at 11:48 pm

Cc is awesome…..wish he couldn’t got the CG.

    LGY,

Jeter was playing to pull for some reason on that chopper it looked like….

  8. Rich in NJ June 4th, 2011 at 11:49 pm

Martin will look a lot better when he’s catching four games a week and Montero is catching the other 2-3.

    Rich,

I agree…..there are better pitchers on a given day than CC…..but the total package of consistency, durability, leadership, and performance with him is tough to beat…..he’s just great.

  11. Nick in SF June 4th, 2011 at 11:50 pm

That extra run cost me.

And failure to get that fourth run cost me too.

But really, it’s all about the win.

I wonder if Martin’s toe is bothering him at bat.

Nice W. Good night, all. Day game tomorrow.

I hope MO can find a way to not sit with Cervy during the postgame meal. haha

    From the last thread:

    WCRSF:

Ellsbury is a better player – don’t waste your time on your usual array of mind numbing cherry picked stats.

I think Martin will pick it back up with the bat…..he probably is wearing down a bit.

CC dominates and Alex and Cano homer…..recipe for success

I’m building up CC’s Cy Young case.

  19. stuart a June 4th, 2011 at 11:55 pm

ellsbury better then gardner. maybe. see if ellsbury can stay healthy for a year.

gardner offers quite a few real good skills for the yanks. best fielding LF in baseball, can hit better then his present 245, takes a ton of pitches and stole 40 + last year. gardner is no slacker…………..

btw who gives a crap about ellsbury………..

  20. Tar June 4th, 2011 at 11:55 pm

“I’m building up CC’s Cy Young case.”

Actually I will borrow Aldo’s line to WCYF

“Right on cue, looking for attention again”

Its fitting for both of you.

  21. stuart a June 4th, 2011 at 11:56 pm

cc is doing just fine a 2.80 era…… he gives them length 80+ % of his starts he is top 10 pitcher in baseball.

is CC the best probably not but he is a stud and for sure top 10 if not top 5, and he is a horse……

  22. LGY June 4th, 2011 at 11:57 pm

It’s also kind of interesting that a guy who thinks pitching trumps everything wouldn’t want the better defensive player.

  24. West Coast Yankee Fan June 4th, 2011 at 11:59 pm

I don’t give a crap about Ellsbury – I mentioned him as being illustrative of the kind of player I would like leading off for us.

  25. UnKnown June 4th, 2011 at 11:59 pm

Nice road trip right now Boys and Girls.

This team is starting to heat up as always as the weather goes so do the Yankees.

  26. LockDown June 5th, 2011 at 12:00 am

    wth is up with Cervelli.

  27. West Coast Yankee Fan June 5th, 2011 at 12:00 am

I like Gardner’s defense – but I don’t like him as a long-term solution in left field for the numerous reasons I listed earlier.

  28. LGY June 5th, 2011 at 12:00 am

Weaver should win the CY if the season ended tomorrow, but as usual CC has a good case for a top 3 finish.

  29. 4time June 5th, 2011 at 12:01 am

I love CC, but he isin’t a CY Young pitcher. Hellickson is also 7-3 with a 2.60 ERA. Lester, Beckett, Price, Shields, Weaver, Haren, Verlander, Cahill, Anderson, Gonzalez, Felix, Pedina, Tomlin, just to name a few, all have just as good or better shot than CC.

He is perfect for this team though, as a guy who eats a lot of innings and gives his team a chance to win in 30+ starts and protects leads well. That is going to get a lot of wins with this team, but he isin’t as dominant as a lot of pitchers.

  30. RS June 5th, 2011 at 12:01 am

Have a chance to go for a 6-3 road trip tomorrow with Colon against Piniero. Couldn’t ask for much better.

CC has pitched the most innings in the AL with a sub 3 ERA. After tonight he will likely be in the top 3 in WAR in the AL.

He is absolutely a Cy Young candidate.

  32. Rich in NJ June 5th, 2011 at 12:04 am

Lester? He of the 104 ERA+?

If he has as good or better shot to win the CYA as CC at this point, someone is smoking really good pot and I”m jealous.

  33. Tar June 5th, 2011 at 12:05 am

CC pitches as good as he has to.

If he needs to be dominant- he usually is.

If good enough is good enough, thats what he is.

    I think he’s great!

  34. UnKnown June 5th, 2011 at 12:05 am

CC is definitely an ACE and a Cy candidate. If you don’t think so then you’re just complaining ot complain. Ice cream isn’t even cold enough for you at that point.

Bery much a Jack Morris/Andy Pettitte type of pitcher. Pitches to the scoreboard.

  36. AldotheApache June 5th, 2011 at 12:07 am

This has been a pretty good west coast swing. The one-run losses were tough to take, they’ve gotta get better in that area. Otherwise, they’ve looked pretty good against some top starters on this swing.

  37. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2011 at 12:07 am

***Very*** much a Jack Morris/Andy Pettitte

Or Garrett Morris (an old SNL reference, sorry, nothing personal)

  39. Tar June 5th, 2011 at 12:08 am

    Thanks GB

I was going to ask you for comps. becuse they weren’t coming to me.

He very well could be in 3 years…

  41. Captain Clutch June 5th, 2011 at 12:10 am

Cano is funny in the postgames. He knows that he swings at pitches that he shouldn’t be swinging at but I guess during the at bat he just can’t help himself this year.

  43. Rich in NJ June 5th, 2011 at 12:12 am

If Ellsbury is ever a Yankee I’ll puke.

  44. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2011 at 12:12 am

Tar, David Wells was pretty much the same way, but, Pettitte and Morris is who comes to mind most. Sabathia is probably the best of the 3-4 mentioned, but, They know how to compete on days they have nothing. Cone was a lot like that, except he was more of an inventor on the mound. not even sure some of his pitches were legal.

  45. RS June 5th, 2011 at 12:15 am

Despite the great showings of Colon and Garcia thus far, I can’t help thinking that CC in the Yankees rotation is akin to Pujols in the Cardinals lineup pre-Holliday. He really has to carry the weight of the team on his shoulders because he doesn’t have a “co-ace” like Haren, Cahill, Pineda, Beckett (this year’s version), Shields, Lee, Hudson, Cain, etc. That’s what makes him so valuable…he seems to embrace that responsibility and isn’t fazed by pressure at all.

  46. Tar June 5th, 2011 at 12:16 am

“Wow! Sarah Palin is more articulate.”

In case you forgot we are talking about baseball.

  47. Nick in SF June 5th, 2011 at 12:17 am

CC threw a couple pitches Wednesday night; they caught up to him in the 9th inning.

  48. Rich in NJ June 5th, 2011 at 12:17 am

Actually, WC kind of reminds me of Palin.

  49. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2011 at 12:21 am

Hopefully, Rivera isn’t too exhausted to give the team a few pitches tomorrow, if needed.

  54. bruceb June 5th, 2011 at 12:31 am

CC is a fantastic pitcher who eats innings and rarely had a bad start but reluctantly I can’t call him an ace. He doesn’t completely shutdown the opposition often enough to be called an ace.
