Yankees cap road trip with another win

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jun 05, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Mark Teixeira played for the Angels only briefly. He was with the team for 54 games in 2008 and slugged .632 during that stretch. He had a .670 slugging percentage at Angel Stadium that year. Back on familiar ground, Teixeira showed some of that familiar power, hitting two home runs in a 5-3 Yankees win against the Angels. The win capped a successful road trip that saw the Yankees win six of nine, despite facing a series of front-line starters. Bartolo Colon’s return to Anaheim wasn’t as dominant as Teixeira’s, but it was good enough for a win, thanks largely to 3.2 scoreless innings by the Yankees bullpen and a pivotal double play that ended it.

    nice road trip

    all of the games were within reach tbh..can’t complain too much about anything

    Good road trip although it still annoys me that we lost those two games in SEA.

    Mariners plate 4 in bottom of 8th, lead 9-6 over the Rays.

  7. Ghostwriter June 5th, 2011 at 7:01 pm

    The one that Nova lost doesn’t bug me, but the one against Felix did bother me, because we had him beat.

    NY Yankees -

    Best record in the AL

  9. Rich in NJ June 5th, 2011 at 7:05 pm

    Interesting, Tom.. ;)

    Not sure why turley was taken out after 5 innings. 5 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 7 strikeouts.

    Can’t imagine that it was pitch counts, He had a 3 pitch strikeout on the final batter.

    sneed gives up the lead.

  11. Yankee Trader June 5th, 2011 at 7:06 pm

    Mariners win.

  12. Ghostwriter June 5th, 2011 at 7:07 pm

    It’s nice to come back from a tough West Coast road trip tied for the best record in the AL, considering that the were in second place in the AL EAst when they departed.

  13. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2011 at 7:08 pm

    That’s good news, Trader. Seattle’s pitching staff should make for a lot of close games. Right now, it’s their staff plus Smoak. Walk him and you have a chance to him.

  14. Bx is Burning June 5th, 2011 at 7:09 pm

    Big homestand coming up. Nice to enter it with momentum.

  15. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2011 at 7:12 pm

    That game was a struggle. Yanks pitching threw 165 pitches to the Angels 131

  16. Eroc June 5th, 2011 at 7:12 pm

    Always nice to win a series in LA. Only 2nd once since 04 I believe.

  17. RSM June 5th, 2011 at 7:14 pm

    As frustrating as some of the Yankees losses have been this season, I think it’s encouraging that most of the losses have been close. Off the top of my head, I can’t recall any blowout losses.

  18. CompassRosy June 5th, 2011 at 7:14 pm

    “Good road trip although it still annoys me that we lost those two games in SEA.”

    But I, for one, am just find with that :)
    And, I’m just fine with the job the Yanks did vs. the other ALW teams they faced on this trip.

    “Mariners plate 4 in bottom of 8th, lead 9-6 over the Rays.”

    Something’s definitely gotten into the M’s bats. Two 2-run triples and a 3-run home run today. Here’s hoping it sticks with them on the road…

    “Nick — don’t be so modest. I think they recognized a STAR when they saw one!”

    Or they thought I could get them Pete Abe’s autograph?

    The pitching has been solid pretty much all year long, which is a big help.

    Kruk sceptical.

  22. Bx is Burning June 5th, 2011 at 7:22 pm

    Rosy –

    Hate to even talk about it, but worst losses of the year thus far have been 2 shutouts to Jerk Beckett and an 11-5 turkey to K.C.

  23. Wang IS Taiwan June 5th, 2011 at 7:23 pm

    Or they thought I could get them Pete Abe’s autograph?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Who knows? They do like the Yankees in China and Pete had the best blog going while he was covering them.
    BTW, he’s stirring the pot over there in Boston just like he did here. Many very angry Bostonites accuse him of being a Yankee-lovin’ spy. How ironic is that?
  24. Nick in SF June 5th, 2011 at 7:30 pm
    Poor Pete, untrusted everywhere when all he ever wanted was a good storyline.
    Do you see many Nationals caps these days? I wonder what folks will do with them if CMW never pitches in a game for the Nats.
  25. LGY June 5th, 2011 at 7:31 pm
    The losses that I did not particularly enjoy were Soriano’s 4 run meltdown and Phil Hughes throwing BP in Fenway.
    Really, I would like to erase any game Sori or Hughes appeared in this year from my memory.
  26. Wang IS Taiwan June 5th, 2011 at 7:36 pm
    Do you see many Nationals caps these days? I wonder what folks will do with them if CMW never pitches in a game for the Nats
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Unfortunately, yes — but typically they never choose the Nats over the Yanks if they both start at 7. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of scheduling. The West Coast/Midwest games begin at an awkward TV time, so they’ll show another game at 7 and then never switch over to the Yanks, but go straight to another NL game — the Dodgers because of Guo Hong Zhi (not sure how they spell it in the States).

    They also have these 30 second “good wishes” on the screen to CMW. I’m sad to say that I don’t think he’ll ever come back…he’s only hitting 85 max these days and has had to stop his throwing sessions early because of pain. Not good.

    I’m signing off — going to go out and find some delicious zongzi! It’s a holiday today here — Dragon Boat Festival.

  27. DocTodd June 5th, 2011 at 7:43 pm

    LGY…I agree the Soriano 4 run meltdown was awful…if I recall, CC was sailing along and could have finished himself

  28. DocTodd June 5th, 2011 at 7:48 pm

    I don’t know if they can continue to contend. But, I’ll sure enjoy it while it lasts.

    ********************************

    M’s had a couple of stinkers vs. KC as well. But, one was with Felix on the mound and included 3 unearned runs … so, in a way that’s encouraging, cuz that’s not going to happen very often.

  31. j9d June 5th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

    Wow, pretty subdued reaction to an incredible 6-3 west coast swing against some of the best pitching out there. I am over the moon happy with this road trip. 5-4 would have been great in the estimation of the overwhelming majority of analysts before this trip. Starting 0-2 , who would have thought we’d get the next 6 of 7. Great stuff.

  32. hardwired7 June 5th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

    For some reason, this post from Niblick stood out to me at the time, and now it seems absolutely prescient:

    Niblick May 26th, 2011 at 5:32 pm

    The Yanks will go 6-3 on this trip. A couple days off, some time away from the crush of NY media, and a bunch of decent pitchers, most of whom they’ve seen before, and the highest scoring team in the entire league, all point to a successful trip.

  33. RadioKev June 5th, 2011 at 8:29 pm

    I can’t remember that last time the Yankees had a west coast trip that went this well. I suppose they could have been 8-1, but you can’t have them all.

  34. CompassRosy June 5th, 2011 at 8:30 pm

    not saying they are going to win 116, but with their win today, the M’s have won 6 consecutive series for the first time since 2001. Reason to at least be encouraged, if not optimistic.

    thanks again Yanks for beating up the A’s and Halos … Can’t you stop in Texas on you way back east? ;)

  35. j9d June 5th, 2011 at 8:37 pm

    I didn’t mean to be a buzz kill. I was just wondering if anyone else out there
    was pleasantly surprised by what happened on this road trip. To me it was a highlight of the season and really encouraging. A good sign.

  36. Hexagenia June 5th, 2011 at 8:41 pm

    Yankees: tied for best AL record; first in AL in runs scored; fewest in AL runs allowed.

    Nice mix.

  37. 4 NYY June 5th, 2011 at 8:43 pm

    Robertson, if ever attains pin point control, could be a closer IMO.

    He won’t keep escaping those situations while walking almost 5 per 9 innings over career so far. This yr., it’s even higher so far, but has a high K rate to help overcome it.

    He has the stuff to do the job, just gotta get Mo’ like MO LOL

  38. Hexagenia June 5th, 2011 at 8:44 pm

    oops…missed Seattle there in runs allowed…so Yanks #2, not 1…still good!!

    sorry Rosy!!

    Romine’s status uncertain, concussion not ruled out

    Thunder catcher Austin Romine missed his second straight game last night, a direct result of his collision with Altoona designated hitter Travis Scott at home plate on Thursday evening.

    Romine told trainer Tim Lentych and manager Tony Franklin that he was experiencing soreness in back and neck, and the team has decided to take the cautious approach. He has already seen Dr. Lou Fares, the team’s physician, and his return to the lineup is uncertain.

    The possibility of a concussion hasn’t been ruled out, but it’s not necessarily something the team suspects.

    Radiokev, right on. This was so good for Yanks.

    Hex, Simple facts can be encouraging, as are yours.

    Joemann, storms were devastating in NE. Hope if you have family and/ or friend
    there that all is well with them.

    Yankees should tell their catchers not to block the plate

    I’m not going to go and research numbers here, but David Robertson is better than several closers in baseball as of right now. He’s not Mo good, but he’s good enough to be a closer on many many teams.

    JORGE POSADA-THEE WORST PLAYER IN ALL OF BASEBALL. HIS HITTING, BASERUNNING AND CHILD LIKE TANTRUM OF A FEW WEEKS AGO ARE THE BIGGEST PROBLEM THIS TEAM HAS.

    Mykyl1,

    Your tantrum is much more intense than Jorge’s.

    Congrats on that. You are not even a stakeholder in the situation.

    Beltran left the Mets game, anybody know why?
    ——————————————–
    Tom,

    Beltran fouled a ball off his calf. Mets took him out to ice it.

  48. RMS June 5th, 2011 at 9:38 pm

    Now the Mets say Beltran fouled it off his shin.

  49. Tom in N.J. June 5th, 2011 at 9:38 pm

    Thanks, RMS.

  50. Nick in SF June 5th, 2011 at 9:42 pm

    Hmmm, I thought maybe Beltran left to shoot the intro to his Yankeeography. :neutral:

  51. Nick in SF June 5th, 2011 at 9:55 pm

    Would you believe… Beltran wanted to watch the 2nd half of the NBA game? :oops:

    I sure miss a lot of the former posters. Doreen, SJ44, Erica, m, Pat M. most of the time and a lot of others. Wonder what happened to Uncle E? Passionate Yankee fans and good baseball people. If any of you still read this blog please come back! We need you.

    Glad that Randy and GB are still with us as well as a lot of others who have hung in.

    BTW Posada had a good day today and is showing signs of coming out of his slump. I’d give him until the all star break and play him every day against righties and lefties. Just have the feeling that he is finally coming out of his funk. People jumping all over him today picked the wrong day to do it IMO.

    C

  53. Tom in N.J. June 5th, 2011 at 10:07 pm

    There was once a poster here named DT.

    Dude was funny. This place could use more humor.
