Jeter at DH for Red Sox opener

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jun 07, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Dante Bichette Jr. just did a conference call with the Yankees beat writers. Very soft-spoken, seems like a nice kid. He said he’s basically the exact same hitter as his father, who taught him from an early age to approach at-bats like a big leaguer. He’s committed to Georgia, but it sounds like there should be no problem signing him. He said he went into the draft hoping to be picked by the Yankees, and he wants to get a contract finished as soon as possible.

Derek Jeter DH
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Russell Martin C
Nick Swisher RF
Andruw Jones LF
Eduardo Nunez SS

I wish our DH spot wasn’t wasted almost every game so far this season.

  2. Vineyard Yankee June 7th, 2011 at 3:39 pm

Should be interesting this series to see see Logan face Crawford and AGone now that both have been hitting better of late. A good gauge of how our lone LHRP fares against out bitter rivals.

  8. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

These are going to be good games, I think. No matter the outcome, I think we’re going to see the two best teams in baseball right now going punch for punch this week.

  9. Chip June 7th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

    Good news about Bichette.

I wish Andruw Jones was DHing instead of playing the field. I think you need to have Gardner manning LF behind a guy like Garcia who puts a lot balls in play

  13. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Marco Scutaro is back at SS for the Red Sox tonight.

  14. SoS June 7th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

    Im calling it now.
Jeter gets 5 hits(3 old fashioned infield singles) in series.
Cano 1 bomb and 4 hits on 8 pitches.
Grandy 2 bombs and 4 hits. Owns lefties and doesnt like seeing tex ahead of him.
Tex 5 hits is over his pullitus.
Alex 2 bombs 4 hits. Now that hes back with Diaz
Martin 1 bomb and 4 hits. Decides to play the rest of the season so Cervelli stays seated.
Grandy 3 hits 2 stolen bases 1 caught steeling.
Swisher 3 hits and alot of hard hit balls.
Posada 1 hit and 1 trying to stretch it to a single.

    Yankees sweep the series.

  15. SoS June 7th, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Speaking of best teams in baseball. How bad is the N.L. right now? Besides the Phillies, I dont see anyone that would even be in second place in any division in the A.L.. Its the Phillies to lose.

  16. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 3:54 pm

you are one optimistic, dude/girl. I see, realistically, one of those things happening. This isn’t the A’s, as much as we’d all love it to be.

  18. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

The NL is so pathetic at this point. The best NL team, IMO, is nowhere near as good as NY, Boston, Texas, Rays, or even Detroit or Cleveland. But, those Philly pitchers will be there when they need them to be.

I think Garcia gets bombed tonite – he throws just their speed – so we’ll need our offense to step up in a high scoring marathon. The next two games will better resemble real baseball.

    Mell–

The Coors Field issue is a good one…but I’m not sure how it plays out with the voters. It didn’t stop them from voting him one MVP and getting him close in a few other races as well.

In fact, I am trying to think of a better RFer in the last 30 years than Larry Walker…great glove, tremendous arm, above average base runner, high BA and power…

And a WAR in the 70s! I think he gets in….

  29. Vineyard Yankee June 7th, 2011 at 4:18 pm

    RS June 7th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

Girardi probably doesn’t want Gardner LHB (.167 BA) to face Lester LHP. On the bright side Jones is better out there than Thames.

  30. Tyler June 7th, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Excited for this series. Tonight is a very key game. If they can beat Lester, these other matchups are very favorable on paper. Need to make Lester work and keep working.

Also hope that we see an aggressive Yanks running game…. Both Salty and Varitek can be run on all day.

  31. Erin June 7th, 2011 at 4:20 pm

JackCurryYES The Elias eye-popping stat of the day: In David Robertson’s last 8 bases-loaded situations, he’s notched 8 strikeouts.

That is a good one. Gardner is out of the lineup tonight and even if he was in there ha has been lost on the bases lately. It would be great to see the Yanks being aggressive on the bases and manufacturing runs though.

  34. upstate kate June 7th, 2011 at 4:27 pm

Grandy can run, so can Jeet and Arod…heck even Martin has a few SB!

  35. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 4:29 pm

    Howard,

The Rays are 2 games over 500

I understand, but talent wise, not to mention where they’re playing, I think the Rays are a better baseball team. Maybe I’m biased towards AL East teams, but I don’t think the Phillies are as good as Tampa is right now.

  36. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 4:35 pm

Excited for this series. Tonight is a very key game. If they can beat Lester, these other matchups are very favorable on paper. Need to make Lester work and keep working.

I’m not seeing it. I think Lester’s game is key, and CC and Beckett are basically uncallable. CC does not scare the Red Sox, just as Beckett does not scare NY.
This year, he’s allowed 6 runs in the first outing (6IP) and in the second outing, he was pulled because he loaded the bases on ~120 pitches in the fifth, but the damage was avoided. Beckett has outpitched him twice now this year.
CC’s game is the key. I think AJ gets the win, and tonights game hopefully Lester stays off track.

  37. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 4:36 pm

I’m sorry, that last paragraph should read Lester’s game is Key. Not CC, as a win or a loss would not be surprising to anyone. Everyone expects AJ to beat Wakefield, but nobody expects Lester to lose to NY.

  38. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

And, those game logs are backwards.

  39. Erin June 7th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

KenDavidoff Two members of Hank’s Yanks – OF William Jerez (#RedSox, Round 2) and 3B Matt Duran (#Yankees, 4th round) were drafted.

  40. blake June 7th, 2011 at 4:39 pm

The Rays are actually pretty bad aside from having a good rotation. Mediocre-bad lineup and pretty bad bullpen…..they played over their heads last year and are worse this year. They are great at player developmennt but their ownership and revenues limit them year to year.

  41. austinmac June 7th, 2011 at 4:40 pm

I am no draft expert, but the Yankees sure don’t seem to be taking high end high dollar risks. Much like last year, signability seem a key. I wonder if there is still a Cole hangover.

While I will hear how the Yankee scouts are the best etc, etc, none of today’s picks were in the national top 200. I live in Austin, and Stafford has some stuff, but he has never been good enough to pitch on the weekends. Yet, he is a second round pick?

  43. RS June 7th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

The Cardinals have a very good record but I don’t trust their smoke and mirrors pitching staff. Their offense is legit though with Pujols, Berkman, and Holliday as good of a middle order as anyone.

  44. blake June 7th, 2011 at 4:43 pm

The Yanks picks may all be home runs…..but it seems like the first couple were reaches and may have been available later……maybe they know something we don’t though.

  45. blake June 7th, 2011 at 4:44 pm

    This isn’t about baseball?

    Agree 100%.

  47. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

Let’s hope so, Blake because I don’t see it at all.

@ RS: I agree. They’re going to come back to earth.

  48. blake June 7th, 2011 at 4:49 pm

The Rays rotation will win them some games because its solid….but their offense is fairly punchless and their bullpen isn’t very good.

  49. Tyler June 7th, 2011 at 4:51 pm

    Vineyard-

I was talking about the entire series, not just tonight. The Yanks have more guys that can run besides just Gardner. Jeter, Granderson, Arod, Martin, even possibly Cano can all steal off of those Sox catchers. They are atrocious behind the plate. The Yanks need to take advantage of this.

  50. Erin June 7th, 2011 at 4:52 pm

YankeesWFAN Indeed, source says Papelbon has been suspended 3 games for Sat’s incident and has appealed. Eligible to pitch in this series.

  52. blake June 7th, 2011 at 4:53 pm

  55. Tyler June 7th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

I know you don’t draft for positional need but Bichette does seem to fill a hole in the system. Not a lot of corner outfielders with power in the system. Maybe only one close is Laird and he’s struggled some.

Yes, the whole series. It will be interesting to see if Girardi cuts these guys loose on the bases. Girardi doesn’t seem to like to play rhat game and take advantage of the other teams weakness (Salty & Varitek)

In theory you are correct we should be able to run all over The Sux. Just need to see it.

  60. Erin June 7th, 2011 at 5:02 pm

  61. Warning Track Power June 7th, 2011 at 5:10 pm

MLB Policy regarding players are allowed to appeal a suspension makes a mockery of the game.
I remember back in the day announcers would talk about how a player would appeal a suspension and the player would be able to state his case the next time his own team is playing in NY.
Well the sox are in NY right now. Are you telling me MLB Offices are too busy and can not see papelbon right now?
    Give me a break.
The league wants pap to be available for this big series.
    Don’t try to fool yourself.

  62. JobaTipsHisCap June 7th, 2011 at 5:11 pm

I think they have to win this series. So far they are 1-5 vs. Sux.

I know someone will mention they had 0-8 start against Sux before. But seriously, what’s the point you wanna put yourself into corner every single time?

  63. Yogi Mantle June 7th, 2011 at 5:14 pm

I think the whole disciplinary portion of MLB needs to be changed. Why hand out suspensions, then allow appeals that mean you pretty much always get a reduction? If there is an appeal, let it be decided right away, and stop with shortening suspensions unless there is real cause to reduce it.

It has become rare when a player goes to appeal and they don’t get it upheld.

In fact, what I would recommend is that those who appeal could face additional time to the suspension if they don’t make a just case.

  64. randy l. June 7th, 2011 at 5:14 pm

” The Yanks have more guys that can run besides just Gardner”

    gardner can run?

someone needs to tell him that.

in the whole history of baseball, has there ever been anyone faster who get thrown out so much.

  65. YES June 7th, 2011 at 5:14 pm

1-5 vs. Sux so far & we are DHing Jeter after an off day.

I get the fact you don’t want to play Posada against a LH, but Garners defense in LF is too valuable to waste on the bench.

DH Jones, & hit Gardner 9th. Besides his steller defense in LF, if he gets on he disrupts Boston’s defense.

We should have our best lineup against the Sux, sitting Gardner just does not make sense.

  66. Warning Track Power June 7th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Yogi-I like the way you think. Dish out a stiffer penalty if the player fails to state his case properly.
Listen, the sox are in NYC right now. Papelbon should have been summoned to MLB offices right away to have a hearing. Plain and simple!

  67. blake June 7th, 2011 at 5:23 pm

Jeter probably wont get an off day over the 10 day homestand……probably a way to get him a day and a half off in a row and to also get Nunez in the lineup against the Lefty.

  68. waka flocka June 7th, 2011 at 5:29 pm

Jeter DHing doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. The Yankees woes at DH will not be solved until they come to terms that Posada isn’t a viable option. The fan in me doesn’t want to see Jorge released but its getting to the point where that is the only option.

  69. LGY June 7th, 2011 at 5:32 pm

in the whole history of baseball, has there ever been anyone faster who get thrown out so much.

    ——

Over the course of Gardner’s career he has one of the best stealing rates in MLB.

    Erin,

We forgive you one mistake, and you made it with Baldwin’s name. Please focus. :)
