    Hard to call this set.

  2. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 12:04 pm

I’m saying we win two. Or lose two. Or win three. Or lose three.:)

  3. RSM June 7th, 2011 at 12:08 pm

As usual, it will come down to pitching. Impossible to predict.

  4. Shame Spencer June 7th, 2011 at 12:11 pm

“Until drilling him has intent to hurt him. Plunking someone in the back is a little different than trying to knock off their helmet because he’s showing everyone up.”

I agree. How does this issue of respect work in baseball, though? Its ok to aim for a guys head because he hit a bomb off you and showed you up? I feel like I’m ok with almost all of these plays that are called ‘bush league’ but I have a problem with players playing with other guys lives.

  5. LGY June 7th, 2011 at 12:12 pm

    WOW. Pirates take Bell.

  6. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Thats obnoxious, especially if he signs.

  7. blake June 7th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

He wont sign with the Pirates.

  8. LGY June 7th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Ugh. There is still a minute between picks. I was hoping for the rapid fire drafting to start.

  9. LGY June 7th, 2011 at 12:19 pm

    Indians take Dillon Howard.

  10. blake June 7th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

Bell and Howard are off…..Yanks have to take Norris if he’s available.

  11. Mell June 7th, 2011 at 12:26 pm

He wont sign with the Pirates.

    ==========================

Think the fact he wasn’t picked yesterday means he wouldn’t sign with anyone.

  12. Pat M. June 7th, 2011 at 12:26 pm

blake….Is Norris sign able ???? Face, I didn’t play much slow pitch softball but from what I remember there wasn’t any bunting allowed….Fastpitch yes, slowpitch ??? Fastpitch was a good game

  13. MTU June 7th, 2011 at 12:27 pm

    Blake-

I take a chance on Purke.

  14. blake June 7th, 2011 at 12:28 pm

    Pat M,

I really haven’t heard that he was dead set on college…..I know he wants a lot of money but haven’t heard that he absolutely wouldn’t sign.

  15. blake June 7th, 2011 at 12:29 pm

Purke is hurt though …..velo down in mid 80s this year. Risky.

  16. LGY June 7th, 2011 at 12:29 pm

    Jays just took Norris.

  17. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 12:29 pm

There wasn’t, thats why I only showed bunt. Which pissed off the other guy and he threw a tantrum.

Hehehehehe Jerkface.. you seriously have me cracking up. Thank god I’d rather come here then do work all day. I might miss out on the funnies.

  21. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 12:33 pm

This is why I hate the MLB draft given the Yankees constant lack of picks/low draft position. I’m better off not learning who the highly prized draft eligible players are, because when they inevitably aren’t picked by the yankees I get pissed :x

I thought Bell or Norris would fall a few more rounds and the Yankees would get a chance to take a pass at either, but nope, gone in the 2nd before the yankees even get their SECOND PICK OF THE DRAFT.

The draft world is really changing, and the Yankees will no longer be able to get by simply by being rich. other teams will drop money in the draft. Yankees need to show that their prospects will get a chance and be more aggressive in the draft.

Who cares where you get your guys.

  24. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 12:35 pm

The Yankees kick a*s in the International market.

The Yankees get a lot of IFA guys but they don’t kick that much ass. Top pitchers and what not still go to other teams. They don’t go all out.

  25. blake June 7th, 2011 at 12:36 pm

    Jerkface,

I agree….revenue sharing and an emphasis on player development is going to cause more teams to take chances and pay over slot on players they want. Yanks are going to have to roll with it…..

  26. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 12:37 pm

Hehehehehe Jerkface.. you seriously have me cracking up

The end of the story is that after he acted like a baby because of my stance, and showing bunt, I lined his next pitch off him for an RBI single and thats when he got tossed. Some would say it cruel to show bunt then swing away for a line drive, but I say it was cruel not to.

  27. West Coast Yankee Fan June 7th, 2011 at 12:37 pm

As much of a crap shoot as this is, I wonder what if any impact the Yankees lack of picks in this draft will have down the road. It seems like Toronto, Tampa and Boston are stocking up on some very good young talent, especially pitchers.

  28. Shame Spencer June 7th, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Hey, the more chances other teams are willing to take on prospects, the better off we are on the whole. That way, we can watch how they develop on other teams before buying them when they hit free agency.

Hey, the more chances other teams are willing to take on prospects, the better off we are on the whole. That way, we can watch how they develop on other teams before buying them when they hit free agency.

The Yankees need to be developing prospects as well, because you can’t buy guys for the 6 years where, generally, you get the most production from players. And it assumes some kind of unlimited budget, because prospects under control are cost controlled and fungible. Having to sign players to guaranteed contracts is not. Its just not a good way to run a team.

What #’d picks do the Yankees have today?

Even though it’s Lester tonight, the Yankees have the best record in the league against lefties. The key to this series will not only be pitching but hitting with RISP.

Hopefully lots of stolen bases and advances on Wakefield knucklers and wild pitches/passed balls.

3rd times the charm against Beckett. Yankees will be prepared.

  35. West Coast Yankee Fan June 7th, 2011 at 12:45 pm

They normally crush beckett, even in his good years, so I don’t think he can hold up against them for long. I’m optimistic to say the least.

Did they just draft a LOOGY?

  39. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 12:47 pm

I don’t know why MLB has decided to break up the draft into a 3 day spectacle. Its not the same as the NFL. They end on round 30 today, why not do rounds 31 to 50? They take 5 seconds per pick.

  40. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 12:48 pm

Did they just draft a LOOGY?

Boone Logan’s days are numbered :x

  41. Shame Spencer June 7th, 2011 at 12:49 pm

Jerkface – I was just being obnoxious of course, re: the draft. But seriously, I think we have enough talent in our scouting department to work with the middling picks we get. I’m a big NJ Devils fan and we literally NEVER get a top pick. And while I don’t generally like to compare, hockey prospects in the draft are usually much more prepared for big league action. So drafting low really hurts because you’re never getting ready made, raw talent. But they still manage to have a really, really deep farm system by getting guys that have some tools and working and molding them within the team’s system. I kinda see the Yanks taking that approach in the future. Doing their due diligence with the draft positions they have (knowing they’ll never be drafting very high because their perennial contenders) and grooming them through A, AA, and AAA. I’m not saying raw talent isn’t essential, but sometimes getting guys to think, play, and act the right way goes a long way in a players development. I believe it really can make the difference between a major leaguer and a AAAA player.

  42. blake June 7th, 2011 at 12:50 pm

It looks like to me that even though the Yanks like and draft the players they want……that they draft guys earlier than the may need to sometimes……

It looks like to me that even though the Yanks like and draft the players they want……that they draft guys earlier than the may need to sometimes……

Might be a by product of picking so late and not having any picks. When theres 200 picks sandwiched around your 2 picks, you might get antsy.

Shame – I would be right behind you in that regard if the Yankees showed a consistent ability to produce good roleplayers from their system. I don’t see them drafting these guys and then working with them to build them into major leaguers.

One of Randy’s mantras is that the Yankees should hire more coaches and really build a production line to the majors, and I agree. The yankees should have more coaches, hell they should have more teams.

  48. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Yea I really can’t argue with who theyve picked…..I don’t know enough about them. The question is could they have taken a shot at one of the “signability” guys and still gotten them later …..guess we’ll never know.

The Yanks had a shot at Purke.

  52. bruceb June 7th, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Really hope we can take two out of three from this series but I think it’s fair to say tonight’s pitching matchup gives the Sox a big advantage to seize the momentum. I like the game two and three matchups so we may have to win this series the hard way.

  53. Yankee Trader June 7th, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Any thoughts on why LHP’s Purke or Osich weren’t picked by Yankees. I know the rankings aren’t necessarily right, but they were undrafted and in the Top 50.

  54. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 12:59 pm

The Yanks had a shot at Purke.

Huge injury risk though, its not that they didn’t have a ‘shot’ its just that other teams are getting more bold in the draft. If this is 2005 Purke slides further down. I don’t see the Yankees drafting him with one of their first 2 picks.

  55. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 1:00 pm

As far as I know Osrich is still available.

  56. MTU June 7th, 2011 at 1:00 pm

    YT-

Purke has shoulder issues right now.

Nats took a flyer. Yanks didn’t want to go there.

  57. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

With Blue Jays and Rays under new management, the Yankees need to really squeeze every last drop out of the draft that they can. Can’t blindly wait for guys to fall that will be snatched up by those 2 well run teams that will almost always pick before the yanks. Detroit shells out money now. The Red Sox consistently game the system for extra picks. Washington apparently going to be huge players in the draft.

“One of Randy’s mantras is that the Yankees should hire more coaches and really build a production line to the majors, and I agree.”

Its funny you say that because I think they’ve got half of the formula. The Yanks farm system is notorious for drilling into the players that they’re Yankees and represent the organization from top to bottom. I think thats a great quality for the lower levels to have. But you could be right about the coaching, though I think maybe K. Long and Dave Eiland were good examples of us possibly going in that direction more. I think having coaches that understand the teams system, who in some cases are moving up in the org chart along with the players they’ve worked with, can only help. (This is assuming our coaches down there are good, of course lol)

Scouting Update: Sam Stafford, LHP (Texas/Santa Barbara Foresters) 2010
    By John Klima

John Klima is a graduate of the Major League Baseball Scout Development Program, professional baseball’s only certified professional scouting school. His recommending organization was Major League Baseball.

I had a very good look at University of Texas left-hander Sam Stafford recently, in an outing in which he pitched seven no-hit innings and showed Friday night stuff on a seriously hot Thursday.

The first thing you would absolutely notice about Stafford is the overhand 12/6 curveball with true bite, power, and plane and the complete and total confidence he has to throw the pitch at any time in the count. Stafford likes to mix and match and its clear that he doesn’t stay true to one pattern. The curveball was 76-78 for hard strikes in this look, in which I graded the rotation and command above average.

Stafford has the arm power to be a front line left-handed starter. I had his fastball at 91-94, including peaks at 94 into the seventh inning. Stafford averaged 91-92 with the fastball and I graded his command above average, specifically with the ability to cut the plate in half and make good use of his slider, which was 81-85 in this look, and with hard life.

In many cases, a left-hander often has to decide which pitch is better for him, be it the curveball or the slider, because too many times one usually takes away from the other. In this look, Stafford’s stuff was so sharp that he was capable of incorporating all three pitches in and attaining various looks and angles. His slider had the arm action run on right-handers and changed planes from a differing angle than the curveball. I’m sure Stafford, like every other left-hander I’ve ever talked with in my life, wishes both pitches worked as well each time out. This was one of those times, but what you like is the idea that he has enough weapons to compete at the advanced levels when he reaches into the bag and maybe only two of the pitches are really there for him on a given night.

Built with medium hips, broad shoulders, long legs, Stafford has a loose and whippy arm action and exactly the right arm speed he needs to be what he is. He remains balanced and coordinated and closed, lands well, and pitched with poise. I liked the way the ball came out of his hand. He repeated well. The one pitch he told me he was working on was the change-up, which of course, most high school and college coaches don’t let guys throw against metal. I’ve seen it go both ways – some guys have enough confidence in the change to throw it against metal and some put it away. In Stafford’s case, he was just working on a straight change. That would be a below-average pitch at this point, but that’s OK, and I could argue that he had a very good feel for it despite not throwing it very much. It should grade up and here’s why – good understanding of maintaining arm slot, arm speed and deception. It needs more innings but you can envision it becoming a part of the palate, and the creation of a four-pitch major league starter.

Well the thing Randy says that I don’t agree with, and instead agree with you, is that the yankees didn’t have a ‘yankee way’ that they taught in the minors. Its pretty clear they value patience at the plate and being professional. I think they should never have any trouble with bad coaching, and really they should have some extra teams around. Like an extra A ball team or something. And sign a million guys to hang out there.

    WCYF-

Interesting take on Stafford from John Klima.

  67. BoJo June 7th, 2011 at 1:17 pm

This is an unusual draft in that because Rays and Jays and Sox have so many picks, they can take chances on players, and there is less chance that a top pick can fall to the Yankees. Thus they can’t plan on having a shot at anyone like that this year. They have to select the sure picks they like, even if it means taking them earlier than they would otherwise go.

  68. West Coast Yankee Fan June 7th, 2011 at 1:20 pm

“He’s a big kid with huge hands. He has an A-plus fastball for this level. He’s been clocked as high as 94 (mph). [Professional] scouts have told me they project him at 235 [pounds] and throwing 97.

“We still had scouts showing up at our game Saturday, two days before the draft. The Yankees are very, very high on him, as are the Pirates and the Phillies. We just have to see what happens.”

Jerkface – I agree. I do think there’s a mantra being drilled into the guys at all of those levels. Plate patience, as you said, is one of the main goals. I want to believe that they are tight on defense down there as well because I think stressing that side of the game is important, but I’m so out of touch with our other teams I’m not sure if this is what they’re doing.

…Maybe the Yanks could buy the Brooklyn Cyclones…

  74. Yankee Trader June 7th, 2011 at 1:27 pm

Cote or Cole? Trade for #1 from Pirates?? :)

  75. GreenBeret7 June 7th, 2011 at 1:32 pm

the yankee minor league coaching beyond the pitching coaches is not good. The worst is the coaching of the infield. That’s what needs to be fixed, along with at least 1 more catching instructor in the lower levels.

  76. Mell June 7th, 2011 at 1:35 pm

Guess it’s not as big a deal for pitchers as it might be for postion players, but I always worry about kids coming from northern New England. Level of competition is relatively weak and weather allows for so few games. I’m sure with AAU and things like that some of the truly outstanding kids get more time on the field, but I always like to see Fla, TX, CA, GA, the Carolinas, etc next to the kids name, rather than NH.

  77. Shame Spencer June 7th, 2011 at 1:36 pm

GB7 – If what you say about the coaching is true (and I have no reason to believe it isn’t) then I think you’re absolutely right. I would like to get guys coaching down there that are stressing a disciplined defense. Especially in the infield, where we’ll probably start trying to get more talent into our system over the next couple of drafts, I think thats essential.

I think it is a concern but that concern is becoming less and less in my opinion. Mike Trout, number one prospect in the game, is from NJ. Guys from the northeast are playing in national tournaments against good competition now. The difference between competition is becoming less. Weather does have an impact but if the kid has tools, teams will jump on him and give him developmental time.

  79. Jerkface June 7th, 2011 at 1:39 pm

I’m going to disagree Mell, the yankee scouts should not be marching south, they should be marching north!

Even more North than New Hampshire, they should go to where the world ends. Only there can they find prospects stalwart enough to handle a New York Yankee Spring.

  80. Tom in N.J. June 7th, 2011 at 1:40 pm

If you go noth enough it’ll be south!

  81. Mell June 7th, 2011 at 1:42 pm

    GB7:

What’s the prototypical minor league coach? Were most of them major league players at some point? Cup of coffee types? Career minor leaguers? Has the prototype evolved over time? One of my guesses is that anyone who had a relatively lengthy MLB career over the last 20-25 years and made real money, probably isn’t terribly interested in a minor league coaching gig. Guess what I’m really asking is whether the minor league coaching community is largely guys who were never particularly good and maybe aren’t the ideal guys to be coaching young kids?

Sure. Tom Glavine was from Massachusetts. Carlton Fisk was a from Vermont, I think. There have been some good ballplayers out of New England. Seem a little more the exception than the rule though. My concerns about competition aside, I’m about 100% certain that 95 MPH in New Hampshire and 95 MPH in Texas is the same 95 MPH.

  85. BoJo June 7th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Actually, for me, the real free agent excitement begins July 1-when International FA signings begin. That is where our talent pool is.

  86. GreenBeret7 June 7th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

There are a lot of younger people available to be hired to coach, that for whatever reason, whether they were gloves only types or because of injuries that had their careers cut short without making big money. Torre Tyson is one. i understand that Sojo is a fan favorite, but, because of hip replacement and such can no longer get on the field to instruct. They have no issues getting younger pitching coaches. I’m sure that there are plenty of good teachers that want to get back into baseball. Andre Robertson, Andy Fox and Homer Bush come to mind. Love to see Pat Kelly back in the system.

Long time no post but I wanted to give my two cents on the Bichette pick.

Over the last four drafts the Yankees have picked HS kids who they believe, if they go to college, would re-enter the draft in 3 years as potential top 10 picks (which they could never get)

You saw it with Cole – hopefully we’ll see it with Heathcott, Culver and Bichette.

  110. Carlo June 7th, 2011 at 2:26 pm

I’d think long and hard about the Coors Effect.

.381 career hitter in Coors, .282 everywhere else. 1.172 OPS in Coors, just under .900 everywhere else. All 5 100 RBI seasons and all 5 25+ 30 homer seasons were as Rockies. He was awfully good, but Coors is arguably what separates him from guys like Olerud and Will Clark, who were terrific ballplayers, but not quite HOF level.

Or, conversely, they take kids that have yet to see collegiate level skill set requirements, and if they only waited, they’d see the kids were big fish in little ponds, and take someone else worth the pick and let the kid flame out in college rather than in the Yankee system.

True, they’re sure be put on the 40-man later today.

In all seriousness though, Boston did very well yesterday. The UCONN kid was a top ten pick on everyone’s list, and the catcher was the best available catcher on the board (rank wise). They probably took a chance with Bradley’s health, but if he rebounds, he’s a great OFer. The lefty I don’t know too much about. Barnes was the steal though, because they’re going to have to pay through the nose to keep the other kid away from UT, which he’s already committed to. But, in the last year of this format, you can bet they’re gonna.

  125. Howard June 7th, 2011 at 2:46 pm

Craig Hansen will be the guest speaker.

They ruined him. I saw him pitch in college and he was a stud. They rushed him WAY too fast and ruined him for no reason whatsoever.

  126. blake June 7th, 2011 at 2:47 pm

The point was that if they wait for the high schooler to come out as a college player…..then they may be drafted higher than they pick. The Yanks have to gamble on less proven guys sometimes because the proven elite talents are gone before they pick often.

  127. Vineyard Yankee June 7th, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Yeah, I got it blake, but I’d rather they take college kids in the same general talent pool. At least the college kids are normally not racking up stats against other high schoolers. Yeah, the elite kids are gonna go to the Pittsburghs and Seattles, but there are still plenty of collegiate hitters who were left on the board with collegiate skill sets.

  131. Shame Spencer June 7th, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Erin – It didn’t seem like many people recognized him. I love working right next to the fan cave though, always people in and out.

Anyway, just because I’m curious to hear opinions, why can’t teams like Seattle and the Pirates contend if they’re always drafting so high? Can it all simply be contributed to poor scouting?

  132. Chambliss June 7th, 2011 at 2:56 pm

  134. SoS June 7th, 2011 at 2:58 pm

    Howard,
This is the only sport where players seem to be pampered and fragile. You never hear in the NFL or the NBA that a player was rushed and that was the reason for his failure. From Troy Aikman going 1-15 and getting killed out there to My boy Manning throwing a crap load of INT his first year. Michael Jordan had no perimeter game and managed to dominate, work on his game and improve his weakness. My point is, Hughes, Joba, Hansen etc.. should have the mental makeup to adjust to the higher level. No one to blame but themselves IMO. You saw a guy like Cano that had a batting avg. in the .280 mark in the minors elevate his game and become an elite hitter. Why cant the others the come to the show? For the pitchers. See the target, hit the target. To position players, see the ball, hit the ball.

    =============================

Most all HOF’ers have lengthy careers, many of which include some tough final years as age and injury take over. Like most who had long careers, Larry Walker was in the game foe a long time because he was a really good player. He’s in the HOF conversation and deservedly so. I think I lean a little bit against, but it certainly wouldn’t be preposterous to see him get the call.
