Joba going on the DL

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jun 08, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Joba Chamberlain going on the DL with a strained flexor muscle. Apparently it’s something he’s had for a while.

Hector Noesi optioned to Triple-A.

Amauri Sanit called up from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Jeff Marquez claimed from the White Sox and added to the big league roster. Should arrive in time for tonight’s game.

UPDATE, 4:10 p.m.: The hits keep coming. Russell Martin’s back locked up after last night’s game. He’s day to day.

This is pretty much awful news….that hurts a lot.

Sanit? Marquez? This is the best we can do?

  7. Nick in SF June 8th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

He strained that felxor signing extra autographs in Vallejo.

    I feel awful.

C mon AJ hit one of their guys tonight particularly big papi who has been comfortable vs yankee pitching since 2003. Start a new era of making those sox hitters afraid to step into the batters box. A new era must be ushered in by yankee pitchers. Every game we play them, one of their guys should be hit. Let’s call it Pedro’s rule.

Looks like Ayala is going to have to step up for a few games. Not sure if he is available tonight though.

  17. Jerkface June 8th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Sending Nunez down isn’t going to teach him how to reach first base with a throw.

How so, ID? Isn’t that why Montero is in the minors? To learn defense? Nunez had a very good year last year, error wise, and he played every day. His throws have gotten better recently with more work.

  18. m June 8th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Bad news about Joba. He was pitching very well.

I guess Robertson’s the EIG. Too bad, he’ll be getting clean innings to start. :P

    Sanit :?

  19. I Like Inge June 8th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Damn … down to D-Rob and Mo. Got to tough it out. Guys have to step up.

Good job Nick. Way to overextend Joba with your useless autographs requests, J/K

    When it rains…

  22. Howard June 8th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Pretty much apropos for his career to date. Every single time we start talking about his velocity being back up, or him being able to really snap off the breaking pitch, he hurts himself.
    This sucks. Alot.

  23. BJK June 8th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

I’m sure Noesi will be sending a nice thank you note to Garcia for his free ticket back to AAA.

  24. Jerkface June 8th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

Why not bring up Norris, he is already better than Joba?

  25. bruceb June 8th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

Great news that Tex is in the lineup. Disastrous news that Joba is going on the DL. Who does that leave in our bullpen? Mo and D-Rob as the only two reliable relievers. This really does put the onus on our starters (I’m not including CC in this statement) to go deep into games.

  26. Vineyard Yankee June 8th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

It is hard to believe with all the Pitching Depth we have in the mL system that we don’t have anyone to bring up that is better than Marquez. What gives ?

  27. West Coast Yankee Fan June 8th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

He strained that flexor carrying 250 White Castles to his car.

  28. Rich in NJ June 8th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

btw, Call up Montero. I don’t care if he’s struggling. He’s miles better than Cervelli.

  29. UnKnown June 8th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

Wow this team is going to need a lot of Sanit-izer to get through this mess.

  30. Howard June 8th, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Martin is hurting too. Back issue apparently.

  31. LGY June 8th, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Why not give Whelan a shot?

The Yankees carry so much dead weight on their 40 man roster.

  32. Vineyard Yankee June 8th, 2011 at 4:14 pm

What ‘flexor’ did he strain ?

  33. Howard June 8th, 2011 at 4:14 pm

It is hard to believe with all the Pitching Depth we have in the mL system that we don?t have anyone to bring up that is better than Marquez. What gives ?

They’re too far removed from this league. I’d love it if they were ready, but honestly, they’re not. None of them have enough innings just to come in and play now. It might be good for a few starts, but as soon as the book is out, the chance remains for them to not be able to adjust once the league does.

  34. SoS June 8th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

Lets think of the bright side. At least our injuries are happening before the all star break. Boston owns the second have of the year.

Girardis infatuation with Cervelli reminds me of Torres for batting Giambi 5th the end of his contract and Tanyon Sturtze on the mound if the wind changed directions.

  35. Chip June 8th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

What’s the move to get Marquez on the 40?

If Martin’s back is more than a day – then yup – call up Montero.

  36. blake June 8th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

This sucks….Joba was pitching so well. Too bad Brackman has been next to awful this year…..

  37. Rich in NJ June 8th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

    Yeah, Whelan too. WTF?

  38. West Coast Yankee Fan June 8th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

It’s time for the offense to step up and carry this team for a while. A-Rod, Granderson, Cano, Swisher.

And what’s happened to Granderson? He’s hitting .220 in his last 10 games with 14 strike outs.

So our bench tonight is Andruw Jones and Dickerson?

I’d like to see someone other than Sanit, Marquez is just here as a long man filler. Can’t be concerned with that. Pendleton and Ayala just became more important, which probably isn’t good.

Losing Joba is a huge blow, he has been real good this year. Huge ground ball rate and keeps his inherited runners on base.

  52. ac1 June 8th, 2011 at 4:20 pm

    ___

No he is not with the team. Son’s surgery or something.

  53. RS June 8th, 2011 at 4:20 pm

I think Posada, Martin, Cervelli, and Romine will all have to be dead for Montero to get called up. And even then, he’d be the BUC to Molina

  54. upstate kate June 8th, 2011 at 4:20 pm

Po was not catching regardless, that has been made crystal clear. Cervelli is perfectly fine as a BUC.

  55. ac1 June 8th, 2011 at 4:21 pm

    ———-

It’s moot – if Sanit is in the game then the game was decided before he got there anyway. Sanit is here for a few days because they can’t use Noesi.

If your biggest complaint is the 12th man on a 12 man pitching staff then you’ve really got nothing to complain about.

Marquez is here because of Noesi. Right now the bullpen is Mo, Robertson, Logan, Ayala, Pendleton, Sanit. Basically we have 2 reliable relievers.

  63. blake June 8th, 2011 at 4:22 pm

The fallout from this that you hope doesn’t happen is that Robertson and Rivera are ran into the ground…..Girardi is pretty good about these things but I can see him having to use Robertson in particular now more than he probably should.

“If your biggest complaint is the 12th man on a 12 man pitching staff then you’ve really got nothing to complain about.”

This misses the point. A fungible aging veteran remains the last man on the roster. A kind can move up with good performances. We just saw that with Noesi.

Luis Ayala hasn’t been bad in the pen.
Joba’s injury does explain why he was topping out at 91 the other day.
Still think with Posada away from the team, and Martin hurt, they need to bring up either Romine or Montero, even for a couple days…

  92. Howard June 8th, 2011 at 4:28 pm

Martin just had a few days off, then played one, and is now back out with a stiff back?

Am I reading that correctly? Was he hurting in the back before he took a couple days off before?

  93. LGY June 8th, 2011 at 4:28 pm

Stretch Joba out to be a starter when he starts his throwing program.

  94. m June 8th, 2011 at 4:28 pm

Martin, too? Hopefully just a 24-hour thing!

    GB7,

Saw your comment in the last thread. I’m not suggesting they take anyone out of the rotation for Noesi. I’m just saying that he could be better served in another role other than the mop-up guy.

He’s basically on his way back to being stretched out. Good to have insurance, and he’s already proven he can pitch against big league lineups.

As for who would take his place? Could be anybody. We’ve had guys like Gaudin and Mitre do it. Sure, Noesi is better at it. But that’s because he’s a better pitcher.

  95. Jerkface June 8th, 2011 at 4:29 pm

While this may be true, can you say that some of the moves seem odd?
Perhaps those aforementioned 40 man spots taken by guys who will never be here?
Or with Martin hurt and Posada away from the team, why leave the bench with two OFs, no INFs, but bring up two pitchers instead of just one?

  100. GreenBeret7 June 8th, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Chavez today and Hughes was put on there on the 25th of May when they claimed Texeira.

  101. SoS June 8th, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Can we then eliminate the catcher position for this one game. Have Burnett either throw the ball to the backstop or at a batter(umpire standing behind Burnett to call balls and strikes)? Hell I played with ghostman at empty positions as a kid. Its not like im making this stuff up.

  102. Jerkface June 8th, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Yeah but you need guys like that on the 40 so that when you run into a situation where you need to shuttle someone up for a game or two you have him.

Yea but I think the amount of deadweight they have is excessive. Managing the 40 has been trouble for the Yankees since the 2000s because of long term contracts. There is no reason to have Buddy Carlyle AND Marquez AND pope AND Garrison all on the 40. Then this kind of roster crunch happens.

  103. RS June 8th, 2011 at 4:32 pm

Easy to say that Sanit is only the 12th man on the pitching staff. but then that makes Marquez the 11th man, and Pendleton the 10th man, and Logan the 9th man, and Ayala the 8th man…you get the point.

Maybe Noesi needs to be converted into a short reliever, or an Aceves at least, where he can pitch one out of 3 days.

  104. Erin June 8th, 2011 at 4:32 pm

  106. Wave Your Hat June 8th, 2011 at 4:32 pm

All I’ve heard about for two years is the great Yankee pitching depth in the high minors. And now they’ve got to claim a White Sox cast-off and activate him?

Plus, why does ARod have to DH when Cervelli is catching? Didn’t he have a day off Monday or am I confused? Nunez and Cervelli in the line-up against Boston? Why?

AND, with Marquez on the roster, there’s no back-up infielder, so we have to lose the DH of Nunez has to be pinch hit for?

    Roster management not good.

  107. Howard June 8th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Stretch Joba out to be a starter when he starts his throwing program

They’ll never, ever admit that mistake. He’s destined to the bullpen until he leaves here and proves everyone in the front office wrong somewhere else. Plus, he’s miss half the year building up enough to contribute here. They’d lose a needed piece for too long.

YankeesInk The good news, everyone, is that the Yanks did not lose Teixeira for even a day, let alone the season.

  110. Jerkface June 8th, 2011 at 4:34 pm

Maybe Noesi needs to be converted into a short reliever, or an Aceves at least, where he can pitch one out of 3 days.

I like Noesi as a starter at least this year, but if the yankees were serious about simply playing to win they’d make Noesi into an Aceves type. I suggested this a few days ago. He has command and control and a bunch of pitches he can throw for strikes. In the end a guy like Nova might be more likely to stay in the pen due to his command issues, but if they want to keep starting him I’d put noesi there.

Both guys make excellent trade bait if they succeed at this level as well. They should be pitchers that the yankees dump at their max value.

i love reading the wanna-be GM’s around here. thankfully none of you morons have the job.

    ___

While this may be true, can you say that some of the moves seem odd?
Perhaps those aforementioned 40 man spots taken by guys who will never be here?
Or with Martin hurt and Posada away from the team, why leave the bench with two OFs, no INFs, but bring up two pitchers instead of just one?
    *****************************************

Are you for real? Posada will probably only miss the game tonight.
Martin probably falls in the same category. Why call up a catcher for only 1 game. That makes no sense and a move like that would be criticized.

I don’t know if the moves are odd because I’m sure the Yankees know a lot more about why these moves were made than Jo Public.
Moves like these are made with careful planning. Don’t underestimate the Yankees org or choices.
Noesi goes down because he won’t be available to pitch for a few days. Insert a new long man.

Joba goes on the DL. Insert another reliever.

    GOOD NITE

Plus, why does ARod have to DH when Cervelli is catching? Didn’t he have a day off Monday or am I confused? Nunez and Cervelli in the line-up against Boston? Why?

    ___

Today i think it would have made more sense to put Swish at first, Tex at DH, leave Nunez and Jones on the bench. This way there is one INF and 1 OF.

Though as i said, i would have brought up Montero to catch for a couple days while Martin recovered.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

M, wasn’t aimed at you. Only the ones that wanted him the rotation right now when they have five in there that are doing exactly what was expected of them. Noesi has performed well in long relief and he did it in the minors, as well as start. He gets loose pretty fast. Nova doesn’t.

  119. RS June 8th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Joba will likely be out for 3 weeks at least…we can’t get by with 5 journeymen relievers for almost a month. God fobid Robertson turns human or Mo gets a cranky back or something…the Yankees need to make a serious evaluation of who has the most talent and upside in the system who can help in a relief role. I can’t believe that Logan or Pendleton are #4 on the depth chart (behind Mo, D-Rob, and Ayala).

  120. Jerkface June 8th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Trying to catch up on the DL, today’s roster availabilty.

I get Noesi needs a temp replacement. Joba on DL needs a replacement… SO that’s 2 new pitchers.

Martin has a bad back, so Cervelli in… ok, so why use Nunez w/A-rod at DH. We have no infielder backups.

Posada has more important issues (pray for his child’s health)…. do we have a backup for his spot? I wish Vazquez was on the roster. He would be the DH tonight with Nunez on bench to backup infield.

  122. Warning Track Power June 8th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

ac1- You don’t call-up a big time prospect for a couple days. Why would you do that?
When Montero is called up, he will probably never return to the minors. And for good reason.
The kid is not ready yet. If the stories here are true about Montero’s eye injury, then obviously he was not going to be called up.

    ————————————–

yea he’s not starting for this team again if they were smart they wouldn’t have put him in the pen in 2010.

Got it! There’s also good reasons to leave him in the pen. You can always find a role for good pitchers. I just like the idea of having insurance. We’ve been lucky for the most part, only Wang was a true loss. But if Noesi can be at least our 5th best starter, then that should weigh into the Yankees decision making “process” imo.

Players dropping like flies. Thank goodness Tex can play.

In a vacuum, those two moves make sense, but you’re neglecting to compensate for the fact that your catcher is hurt and your emergency catcher is unavailable. It’s a lot easier to get by with 6 relievers than just 1 catcher.

Currently I don’t see a way where he can be in the starting rotation. One of the 5 we have now would have to suffer an injury or pitch so poorly and lose his job.
So for the time being, Noesi was able to get his feet wet as the long man, pitch incredibly well.
Today was a numbers game. He went 6 last night and he needed to be sent down for
a fresh arm. I’m sure Noesi will return as soon as he becomes eligible.
Barring injury, I believe Noesi has to stay in the minors for at least 10 days.

Those AAA guys in the bullpen have given the yankees the best pen ERA in the league and that’s with Soriano and Sanit.

    YT-
If Garcia continues to pitch <2 innings over the next 10 days, then I agree with you.
But c'mon, 1 horrible start does not earn a demotion for Freddie. You don't do a vet like that.

Marquez did not appear in a game after his contract was purchased May 30.
He had a 3-4 record with a 3.97 ERA in nine starts at Charlotte.

  196. GreenBeret7 June 8th, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Sisco is no longer in the organization. Marquis was just claimed on waivers from a 40 man roster, and would get claimed again. He’s there for insurance and will most likely end up in the Scranton bullpen.

  197. SoS June 8th, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Anyone think Whelan will be traded next month? Montero? Isnt it better to keep players down (if your thinking of them as a trade chip)in the minors dominating rather than risk them coming up for a short stint and getting hammered or not hitting well. Having their trade stock tumble.

Who the hell is Marquis? Or are the yankees claiming made up players now?

RiverAveBlues Based on the official site, Eric Chavez is on the 60-day DL to make room for Marquez. Not eligible to return until July 5th (unofficially).

Afternoon, TT. How are things going.? If he can sing and play BMW, he’ll be worth it.

Here;s a couple of draft picks that will make you feel old. Former pitcher Alex Fernandez’ son was just picked.

Even further back? Bill Freehan’s grandson was picked by the Tigers.

Good day GB. Everything is good in Carolina except Hot. I dont know how much you are into facebook but Tom Sturdivant’s grandson is on there. He has a picture of granddads baseball card when he was with the Red Sox. He says Granddad told him, You can wipe your tail with that one. True story

  201. Captain Clutch June 8th, 2011 at 5:12 pm

Right but the AAA guys have never pitched in 4-3 game in the 6th or 7th inning. Or even 8th inning if Robertson isn’t available that day. A little bit different than pitching if the Yanks are winning or losing by 4 runs or more.

  202. JobaTipsHisCap June 8th, 2011 at 5:12 pm

the question is becoming serious: can this team beat Sux?
    1-6.

what’s the chance for Yanks to win this series? 40% I guess.

Whelan isn’t really a guy that is going to command much in a trade I don’t think being 27 and still in the minors. The best way to show case him would be to actually have him succeed in the majors. Montero might hurt his trade value if he absolutely looks lost at the major league level, but the yankees would have to be looking to trade him *this year*, which I don’t think makes sense given the outlook on the market and the clubs offensive age.

  205. Jerkface June 8th, 2011 at 5:14 pm

Romine concussed, already puts one in the bank, can’t have him block the plate.

    That would be nice.
    A.J. for 7
    Robertson in the 8th
Sanit in the 9th because the Yankees are leading by 7 runs

  207. ZMAN June 8th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Pendleton has yet to give up an ER in 10 innings
Ayala has been terrific for us

    Pen will be fine.

  208. sunny615 June 8th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Noesi was optioned because he just pitched 6 innings. He can’t pitch in back to back games. Joba to the DL means they need someone – I was surprised it wasn’t Whelan tho.

  209. Yankee Trader June 8th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Marquis was obtained with Swisher in the initial trade from the White Sox.

    Jerkface-

I was reading last weeks issue of the Sporting news at the library, listing the current best 50 MLB players. BTW CC was the best lefty listed before the likes of Lee, Lester and Price.
Along with the article it listed the 50 [from beginning of 2011 season to the last week in May] the leaders in WAR. Cano was at 7.7 and Gardner was next at 7.6 with Grandy, around 6.6. Do you think that was accurate??

Jerkface-Is there video of the Romine collision? If yes, please share a link

  211. Jerkface June 8th, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Pendleton has yet to pitch in a game that was closer than 4 runs. In his first outing ever it was 5-1 Rangers when he came in, and the yankees scored 1 in the bottom of the 8th and then 1 in the bottom of the 9th. He also pitched with a 4 run lead against Tor. Every other game he pitched in the yankees were winning by like 7 runs. He should get more work, but I think the yankees realize he has been fluky good since he has hardly struck anyone out. I don’t think you’d see him pitching so well in a close game.

The Yankees need more than just D-rob and Joba as front line relievers, the injury to Soriano certainly hurt and now Joba. They need big talent guys that can BE something, not just mop up guys.

  212. Jerzz June 8th, 2011 at 5:21 pm

    “Whelan 2011 = Albaladejo 2010″

Whelen’s stuff is much better. Him, Morris, and Kontos need to be up here. Flores too as a lefty.

Remake the pen with some young guys who throw gas. Enough with the Peddleton’s, Ayala, Sanit, Carslyle, Marquez, etc.

And time to use Noise as an Aceves-type short/long reliever rather than a mop up man. Robertson/Joba are going to be run into the ground now that the non-CC starters have predictably stopped giving consistent innings.

  213. Jerkface June 8th, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Marquis was obtained with Swisher in the initial trade from the White Sox.

Marquez was traded for Swisher, who came back with Teixeira. That WAR leader thing can’t be accurate, unless its a different stat you’re talking about. a 7 WAR is like one of the best seasons ever for a player.

  214. Yankee Trader June 8th, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Also Pendleton doesn’t throw his fastball much above 88-89 with little movement. I hope he’s not needed against Boston in a close game.

  215. Yankee Trader June 8th, 2011 at 5:24 pm

The War was taken from fangraphs. I wish I could track the issue down on the web.

  216. GreenBeret7 June 8th, 2011 at 5:25 pm

TT, that’s some funny stuff. Sturdavant came out of the same area as Mantle and Ralph Terry. Really ashamed that after those two great years with NY, he hurt his arm and was never the same. The three were really close friends. The Yanks used to bring those kids up all of the time and they’d win them titles. Bob Grim, a 20 game winner as a rookie. Sturdavant wins 16 games in each of his 2 years, Johnny Kucks 18 wins as a rookie in ’56, Bill Stafford, Bouton, Downing, Roland Sheldon, and the only one that lasted in NY was Mel Stottlemyre. Those were great farm teams back then.

It’s hor here, too it was at 97 degrees by 3 PM but tems dropped abot 7 degrees since. looks like rain

This is gettin a bit scary. Our pen is scarce. Mo and D-Rob. No (good) lefty specialist. What’s the chances AJ has a good game with Cervelli? I hope the bats are prepared to put up 10 tonite. Think they’re gonna need it.

    Jerkface-

That couldn’t be right. Looking up on fangraphs the current leaders[WAR] of the first 35, Granderson , A-Rod and Tex are at WAR’s of 2.7,2.3,and 2.2

Even if it was WAR since 2010, Gardner would not be in the top 50, would he? I’m pretty sure it said 2011 until last week in May.
I just attached the fangraphs current 2011 stats. The best in WAR is Bautista at 5.0

  226. m June 8th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

    Aaron’s quick wrists.

    Henderson’s speed. [legs]
    Ted Williams eyes?

    Others?? :)
