Teixeira in the lineup one day after HBP
Before we get to the lineup, a quick update on today’s media game at Yankee Stadium. No one seems to know the exact score — I’m sure manager Ken Davidoff has it somewhere — but the New York writers won. The guess is that 15-8 was the final. Something like that, anyway.
Sam and I had a good day. We combined to go 2-or-3 with three RBI, three stolen bases, two walks, two runs and a sac fly. I successfully caught the only ball hit to me in left field. Sam got time in both left and center, but I don’t remember whether he had a ball hit his way. Regardless, a good day for the New York writers and the LoHud writers.
Except for this…
In the third inning, I had a clean RBI single up the middle. My first base coach gave me this advice: “They’re not going to throw you out. Run on the first pitch.” I was a few feet off the bag — not a massive lead — and I was mostly making small talk, waiting for the pitcher to do his thing. That’s when the second baseman threw to first, picking me off with a hidden ball trick. Shameful, and believe me, I’ll be hearing about it from my teammates for the next several weeks and months.
Mark Feinsand, caring friend that he is, took the above picture immediately after my slow jog off the field.
Anyway, here’s the lineup for tonight. Mark Teixeira says he feels great. The bench isn’t listed, which suggests a roster move coming.
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Brett Gardner LF
Eduardo Nunez 3B
Francisco Cervelli C

Martin just had 3 days off does he really need another one?
Would you have worn a Mizzou Journalism shirt had you anticipated the pickoff?
You’re a good sport, Chad.
Glad that Tex feels good enough to play the field. He needs to exact his revenge.
As for the roster move, RAB saying that Marquez is in uniform tonight. Suggesting that Noesi will be sent down as a reward for his good efforts.
Probably Noesi going back down to Scranton to make room for Marquez. Sanit DFA.
Noesi pitched 6 innings, so he can’t pitch for us in the next few days. It makes sense to temporary replace him & bring him back up, IF that’s their intent
wow, now that Nunez in a horrific slump and the wet noodle that Cervelli takes to the plate with him, and Swish still struggling somewhat, and Jeter not the Jeter of old, etc. this is a very, very weak offensive lineup. Losers of 6 out of 7 against the Sux and this is what Girardil puts out there? Wow
Getting picked off base? I would think you might have low-crawled to the dugout and hope nobody saw it.
At least you guys beat the lice from Boston. good job, Chad.

” Posada reaches base in all four plate appearances and then sits down? Unbelievable.”
There’s an excellent reason for Jorge not being in the line-up but feel free to whine away and look silly.

kate,
Yeah, Pete has his soft side.
As for the retaliation. At first blush you want your guys to react.
But I like the idea of brushing them off the plate. Keep it in the back of their minds. Anyway, for those who want it, I bet CC takes care of it. He always does.

As I said earlier. Boston hitters wil have “happy feet” with Burnett pitching. His best brushback is the hard curve on their toes or ankles.
Noesi doesn’t deserve his fate. Wonder if they’ll send him down and have him start games? As insurance for Garcia/Nova/Hughes?
Anyway, the pen has really settled down. Amazing what a healthy pen can do.
At what point did the hidden ball trick become legal?
Varitek catching a Wakefield start for the 1st time since 2005.
the hidden ball trick is bush league.
surprisingly effective, at times, but still bush.
The Yanks play 16 games in a row starting last night…..they had to give Martin a rest catching from AJ sometime.
Chad,
Seriously, did they have an official scorer? And was there a PA guy? And did they put the hitters and pitchers on the video screen? Did the wives and girlfriends show up? I’d love a post about the media game.
ESPN is reporting Posada is NOT in the line-up tonight because his son is having surgery.
ESPN is also reporting that Cashman has confirmed this bit of news.
The surgery was planned in advance and Posada hopes this is the final surgery for the young man
m – I think that’s the only logical explanation. Noesi has done well everytime out. He had been groomed as a starter, so being buried on the bullpen bench, waiting for blowouts, does not get max value. His reward, as implied, has to do with being made ready to step in for (most likely, IMO) Garcia or Nova. Right now, he can’t pitch for a few, so taking advantage of his option makes sense.
Oh, and welcome back.
Who would you put out there timmyb?
Jorge not available to DH and Jones coming off the sombrero. Dickerson? not much of an improvement with the bat over Nunez. Although I wish Martin were out there instaed of Frankie.
Tex is a tough dude….he played through all sorts of stuff last year.
Speaking of batting averages. Arod leads the team in that category with a .280 avg. I cant remember the last time I saw a Yankee team without anyone hitting over 3.
Question for all.
Nunez is batting .212. We replaced Pena with Nunez for his bat. Seeing the results, would it be better to bring back Pena ‘s glove and put Nunez in position to play everyday in AAA?
Cervelli playing so much is asinine, bring up Montero !
I cant remember the last time I saw a Yankee team without anyone hitting over 3.
I remember being at a game many years ago and thinking how amazing it was that Matsui was the only guy in the lineup that day NOT batting over .300
“ESPN is reporting Posada is NOT in the line-up tonight because his son is having surgery. ESPN is also reporting that Cashman has confirmed this bit of news. The surgery was planned in advance and Posada hopes this is the final surgery for the young man”
Sounds like a good reason to me….I hope this is it for the little guy.
I’m amazed Tex is well enough to play. Hard to believe he’s 100%.
As for Noesi, he has nothing to be ashamed of. Logical move considering he won’t be available for at least 3 days, maybe more.
I wonder if Martin’s ok, after his totally unintentional being by Lester last night. I wonder that, if something did swell, it might impede his slippin’ and slidin’ after AJ’s pitches in the dirt.
Montero has an eye infection…..but when he gets better bring him up and package Cervelli to the Giants for Tim Lincecum…..see I could be a GM.
Joe-
I’m sure Martin is ok. He might be banged up or a little sore, but I think tonight is a great opportunity to give him the night off and insert Cervelli.
A.J. is brutal with balls in the dirt.
As I said earlier. Boston hitters wil have “happy feet” with Burnett pitching. His best brushback is the hard curve on their toes or ankles
=========================
Burnett has allowed 33 ER in 35.2 IP against Boston as a Yankee. Hopefully it’ll be just their feet that are happy this time around.
Let Noesi get a start at SWB then bring him back and put him in the rotation.
I.E.,
Do you keep Nunez up or send him down for more reps?
Can we get Flaherty from the booth to replace Cervelli? At this point anythings better. Pena, Girardi(player coach).
Noesi doesn’t deserve his fate. Wonder if they’ll send him down and have him start games? As insurance for Garcia/Nova/Hughes?
——————
It’s better for Noesi this way. He’s not a long man.
Joe,
Could be….he could be a little sore and they thought catching AJ was too much…..they really can’t let him catch AJ every turn….it’s probably like the equivalent of catching both teams in a game.
Gonna be a track meet on the bases tonight with the AJ/Cervelli battery – at least one double steal will go down tonight – rest Martin against the Indians – he should be playing all 3 of these games
Posada has never hit Wakefield especially well at a .211 clip, and the last thing they need is to have him get his swing messed up by that knuckle ball, not that he’s got it working pretty well. Neither Martin nor Cervelli have hits off of Wakefield in 3 at bats. Martin isn’t exactly ripping it up right now anyway. Still want to whine?
I hate that about roster moves. I feel bad that Noesi has pitched so well and now has to go back down. Makes sense but it still is the sucky part of making moves.
Funny how things like batting averages mean nothing unless it’s an attempt to further your argument, huh?
——————-
I’m glad ID posted the comparison of Cano and Alex so I didn’t have to take the time to fully respond to this.
Montero has an eye infection
–
He would never have got an eye infection if he had access to major league eye drops
Should be a track meet from the Yanks side as well with Wakefiekd and Varitek….if they can get guys on base
Chad,
3 things.
I just want to know if New York writers nailed a Boston writer in the earhole?
Did you or sam flip the bat after a hit?
Did you rip the base off and hold it up after a stolen base?
Why can’t Joe rest Martin after the Sux series. Not only have we lost 6 of 7 to them, but they are a division rival. I don’t get not putting out your best team when we play them.
Cervelli is terrible. Weak arm, no power, can’t hit for avg. Why is he still on this team when we are supposed to be loaded with catching talent in the minors. Lets start giving these kids an opportunity and stop running out the likes of Francisco Cervelli.
It seems Joe needs to rest one of our regulars every time we play Boston. How about resting them during inter-league play or when we play a non-division opponent.
The stolen base record could be put to the test tonight
Isn’t it obvious that Cano had a better year last year? His triple slash was higher across the board. A-rod’s OBP last year was .341, that is terrible.
Girardi is a strange dude. We are playing for 1st Place (I know it’s only June) against our biggest rival and no Martin in the lineup. What gives ? ?
Even though Martin has been quiet with the bat lately he is miles ahead of Cervelli with the glove and has had plenty of days off ( that rest thing ) lately ( as Captain Clutch said June 8th, 2011 at 3:42 pm )
Does he have an unknown injury that we are unaware of ? ? Or should we give Girardi the nickname of “Clueless Joe” ? ?
I have no problem with Cervelli catching AJ, but not tonight of all nights. The AJ/Martin combo has been really good at limiting base stealers this year, considering he’s a curve ball pitcher. The AJ/Cervelli combo of last year, urghhh no. Hopefully AJ has another of those “throw to first catch them off guard”move that’s he done 2X this year so far.
Plus I trust Martin’s bat more than Cervelli especially considering we have nunez.
Really hoping we score a lot and early and keep tacking on. The Grandyman needs to come back from the mini slump. Teix, A-Rod, Cano & Swisher need to have a big game
Joe,
Thanks for the hospitality!
I can only imagine that Marquez is here because Noesi is spent. He put up starter innings last night. But you can’t argue for sending any others down, they’ve pretty much pitched well.
I know very little about Noesi, but he’s impressed in his time up here. Fingers crossed and hope he’s put into the 6th starter role.
o/t and on a sad note, a former LI basketball standout just died, huh?
RAB is reporting JOBA on the DL. Is this true? If so I guess there will be two new Yankees today in uniform.
Jerkface,
lol. The expired eye drops does the damage yet again. I heard a peed on babies diapers fixes the problem. Never tried it.
Joba DL shocker
“Cervelli is terrible.”
He’s safe and when they played him last year nobody died……
Joba to the DL strained flexor?
Chad:
I hope the Yankees threw you guys a nice post game spread with a couple of cold ones for your efforts. The least they could do.
I vote for just calling him “Clueless Joe”
SoS – I really don’t know, I try to not overly concern myself with the backups.
Sending Nunez down isn’t going to teach him how to reach first base with a throw. he’s not here for his bat. /shrug
Noesi has pitched in 4 games and 15.1 innings. He’s saved the bullpen in his games. Exactly who is supposed to be pulled from the rotation to put him in?
Yanks getting Stupid as league gets younger.
Bring up the Kids!!!!!!!
