    Erin,
Yes that her. She stole the show in Kick A. I think they should do a spin off about her character.

    ******************
she is really good. She was great in 500 Days of Summer too.

Russell, you had better not be damaging your back even further.

Pruf, SI team may be almost as fun to watch as Charleston. We may also see Kuo there. Final roster won’t likely be up to the very last minute, but it is stacked!

  4. Jerkface June 13th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

A balky backed backstop Martin behind the plate for Burnett is bound to be bad for business

  6. SoS June 13th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

The way his throws slice to the right, I suggest that he throw the ball into the shortstop hole and the ball should be right on target to the bag.

    ========

Lol. Just to be safe, maybe he should aim at Alex and let nature take its place.

  7. Nick in SF June 13th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

Thanks, SoS . It’s a great story for Cal, given that the baseball program was slated to be cut after this season (decision since reversed after successful fundraising). The baseball coach cancelled practice the day the decision was announced back in September, but the players got together and decided to practice anyway and hung together and kept fighting.

    Aaron Rodgers —> Cal Bear
    Jason Kidd —-> Cal Bear

Not sure if there were any Cal Bears on the WS SF Giants team.

    Look at Jerkface using alliteration.

  9. GreenBeret7 June 13th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

SoS, maybe the rotation of the Earth is what’s making Cervelli’s throws go off-target. slow down the rotation and the throws will be just about right.

    REPOST

Meet Manny, who’s lived most everywhere,
    From Monterrey to Trenton Square.
But Delin’s only seen the sight.
A guy can see from Brooklyn Heights —
    What a crazy pair!

    But they’re pitchers,
    Promising prospects all the way.
    One pair of matching aces,
    Different as night and day.

Where Manny adores a change of pace,
The 12 to 6 curve, and 95 mph in yo face,
Our Delin loves to rock with heat,
A drop dead curve at your feet —
    What a wild duet!

    Still, they’re pitchers,
    Promising prospects and you’ll find,
They pitch alike, they walk alike,
At times they even talk alike —

    You can lose your mind,
When pitchers are two of a kind!

  11. SoS June 13th, 2011 at 3:50 pm

    Erin,
Now if we can only find some up and coming actors to replace the aging ones. Percy Jackson actor might be one. The other guy from the facebook movie as well.

  12. DocTodd June 13th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

Cervelli should just throw the ball to 3rd when a runner tries to steal 2nd….that way the runner stops at 2nd…..

  13. SoS June 13th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

    NSF,
Had no idea they were on the chopping block. Maybe this is the year of the Bears. My sons play for a pop warner team called the Bears. Who knew? Keep em coming!!

  14. SoS June 13th, 2011 at 3:53 pm

    GB,
Maybe Cervelli should use the pitcher as the cutoff man. Damon used Manny. Why not?

Speaking of Damon. I found out the other night that Damon Oppenheimer lives down the road from one of the families I babysit for.

also, since we are on the topic of Johnny Damon, they are giving away a “Heres Johnny” shirt at the Rays game on Friday and Im going :) Thankfully this isnt one of those lame under -14 only giveaways.

Could you imagine Nick Swisher, budding actor, being cast in the remake of True Grit….Now that would have been downright hilarious….

  41. BoJo June 13th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

I think it was on the game blog yesterday that someone posted an interesting comment from Greg Maddux about holding runners on…sorry I can’t recall who…but it was that less than 20% of runners who steal second score, and that it was more important to concentrate on the hitter and get him out. (Sorry if I got that wrong in any way.)

Anyway, looked like Garcia totally ignored the runners and thus Martin didn’t even try. To me, that is interesting in that his behavior reinforced Garcia’s attitude. Perhaps for another pitcher that cared more, Martin would have tried to throw.

  42. randy l. June 13th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Sure there is – if you have a left handed catcher who throws hard enough and accurately enough to nail a runner trying to steal 2nd you move him to the mound and convert him into a reliever. :-)

I believe Montero is overvalued by many on this board. While he is a good hitting propspect, he is a questionable catcher. He has value, but to say only a few pitchers and players in the majors have as much trade value is just being an excessive homer. Just because he is a Yankee prospect doesn’t make him a future hall of famer. If he were a Red Sox prospect, just think of the criticisms he would get on this board.

  55. DocTodd June 13th, 2011 at 4:20 pm

I believe lots of prospects are overvalued on this board. People fall in love with the promise of what they “can be” if everything goes right. Never stopping to think about what happens if everything doesn’t go right – which is more the norm than the exception.

  67. LGY June 13th, 2011 at 4:32 pm

    ——————

You are not properly understanding the value argument in regard to Montero.

It is not about who has equal value to Montero. It is who has equal value to the Yankees

The Yankees have so few holes on their team that there are just so many players in MLB that it doesn’t make sense to trade him for. It is also much easier for the Yankees to acquire depth than other teams because they can just spend $ on it and overpay for it. Upside has more value to the Yankees than a typical team.

  68. Jerkface June 13th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

There is also a lack of relative value compared to Montero’s peers. No one would trade a montero like prospect for the kind of players bandied about on this board.

  69. GreenBeret7 June 13th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

The White sox already have a young catcher, a Dh and a 1st baseman. Tyler Flowers is the catcher of the future. Where’s Nunez going to play? Will they bench Ramirez or Beckham?

  70. LGY June 13th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

    Play Nunez at 3b.

I don’t know the Chicago prospects – if they have no need for Montero so be it.

  75. MTU June 13th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

I don’t believe the Yankees put any prospect into the “Untouchable” category.

    Only fans do.

Cashman has said as much in the past.

I’m paraphrasing here but something like, ” For the right player no prospect is untouchable”.

So far Montero has only been offered for elite pitching.

    Austin-

I agree with you in the sense that we really do not know how the Yankees view Montero’s prospects to remain a catcher.

The company line is that he sticks. What they really think we will probably never know.

  76. blake June 13th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Maybe Montero is overvalued……but there is a chance he isn’t being and that’s the thing with prospects……you just don’t know until they come up and you find out. You could say any prospect is overvalied when they are still in the minors…..I don’t want to find out that Montero is a.stud by him crushing the ball for another team.

    GB,
Good news for you! A remake of Three Stooges is coming out in theatres soon.

Anyone else think Nunez should go to AAA to get more playing time for Pena. He doesnt seem to be flourishing in his backup role, offense has taken a hit. Needs more repetition. Pena is what he is. A backup with no future as a starter.

  80. LGY June 13th, 2011 at 4:41 pm

If you’re talking about trades in general – you could be right.

    —————–

I was speaking more in general, but the high end pitching thing is not true.

It is simply a matter of if those teams would move their high end pitching. Twins, Angels, Oakland, Marlins, and Dodgers for example.

  81. SoS June 13th, 2011 at 4:41 pm

    SoS-

    Funny you should say that.

We have ‘em right here in Utah.

A couple of my Hiking friends were tellin’ me just last week how they ran across one.

Apparently the person thought they were alone.

Took off for the hills like a jack rabbit when sighted.

My friends said at first they though it was someone with a “Tan” outfit and then they realized what they really had seen.

With all the rock and Cactus out here that has to be one dangerous undertaking.

Maybe someone else besides Pena(veteran maybe via trade). I just dont want Nunez offense to take a permanent hit by sitting. Dont you think him being young can keep improving more on both o and d sides by getting reps in AAA?

BryanHoch Phil Hughes will throw in extended Spring Training tomorrow, expected to be about 45 pitches. Gulf Coast League doesn’t start til 6/20

Does anyone ever spend a good 2-3 hours listening to the FAN, particularly the caller questions?

I have today and I’m just astonished at some of the stupidity you hear.

Last caller: “What do you think about trading Montero for David Wright?”

    ———————————————-

What about this one from this morning? Beltran for Swisher, Gardner and Nova.

I don’t have a problem with the TBA status Thursday.
Noesi is the logical choice, but if any of the starters fail to go deep in a game or if there is another extra inning game, then Noesi has to pitch.
If so, then someone else will have to start on Thursday.

    Re: Phil Hughes.
Appears the news gets better and better. I wonder if he will be ready to give the Yankees about 6 innings at the big league level post All Star game

I don’t think Montero is being overvalued here. Baseball America, who insists Montero is likely destined to be a DH, rated him the #3 prospect in all of baseball. That’s how highly his bat is regarded.

Granted, Hughes and Joba were once rated the #2 and #3 prospects in baseball (for good reason though…they absolutely dominated MiLB) but I think most people are more comfortable with the Yankees breaking in a young hitter than a young pitcher.

  97. Bad Scooter June 13th, 2011 at 4:54 pm

If we’re overvaluing Montero then so is Cashman.

It is extremely difficult and ultimately risky to peg the value of any player in baseball right.

There is significant uncertainty over whether or not the run scoring environment in the game is truly changing and whether it’s doing so on a long term basis rather than as a short term trend.

If you can’t specify the environment the game is going to be played in moving forward, then it’s very difficult to specify value. This is especially true for younger players.

But if we assume that in fact the run scoring environment is decreasing then it has profound effects on how a team should optimally construct itself and what players it should look to keep.

From what I’ve seen of the game over the past few seasons – players like Montero are only going to become more and more valuable due to the overall depression of run scoring.

It is extremely risky to trade this player right now.

Take a player like Mike Stanton – as good as he looked 2-3 years ago. He is even more valuable now then his top projections looked to be a few years ago (on another note – Stanton is one of the most outrageously talented players the game has seen in years).

It is very difficult to develop strategy and tactics in baseball right now. The Yankees should be very careful with how they use their resources.

Looking at the standings the teams that are falling out of contention don’t have the high end pitcher that the Yankees need.

If you’re talking about trades in general – you could be right.

    —————–

I was speaking more in general, but the high end pitching thing is not true.

It is simply a matter of if those teams would move their high end pitching. Twins, Angels, Oakland, Marlins, and Dodgers for example.

    ————

Only one pitcher on Oakland I was a fan of and he’s hurt

Twins best pitcher is having a miserable year

Angels have no reason to part with Haren or Weaver

Same with the Marlins re: Johnson

Dodgers – there could be a match there: Maybe Kershaw for Montero and another prospect.

    No.

Kennedy is a National League pitcher – he was a bad fit for the AL East.

    Melancon is a fungible reliever.

“Moon Rivera” is good, but not a Beatles song. How about “The Save King”?

Also, just to be clear, I was just posting that list from the “It Is High…” blog, I didn’t write any of those.

But I’ll take the blame for these songs McCartney will dedicate to the Red Sox:

I wrote this last week and I will repeat myself:
Kennedy is suited for the NL. I wish him all the success but I am certain that if
he were still wearing the pinstripes, Kennedy would not be enjoying success.
For my money, Nova, Noesi and possibly Garcia are >Kennedy

    Chip,

Liriano is having a miserable year but you want to trade Montero for Danks?

Every player in baseball is available at the right price. There will be players out there the Yankees can obtain from high end high risk guys like Liriano, to buy low candidates like a Ryan Dempster, high end guys like maybe Haren if you pay the right price, or safer middle of the rotation pitchers like Kuroda. It all comes down to what the Yanks will pay.

In regard to the Marlins I actually have Anibal in mind, not Johnson.

  111. Tom in N.J. June 13th, 2011 at 5:04 pm

Fred McGriff. Dude hit 490+ home runs.

He never hets mentioned as a prospect who got away…

  112. G-C June 13th, 2011 at 5:05 pm

Nova is not anywhere near > Kennedy.

    That’s ridiculous WTP.

Regardless of league, he’s putting up tremendous numbers right now. He would easily be the #3 starter in this current rotation behind Sabathia and Colon, maybe even the number two.

His strikeout rate is very strong and outside of fastball velocity (of which isn’t all that bad) he has no weaknesses as a pitcher. The scary this is that his command should only continue to improve.

Hi Joe. Hope your well. Glad to hear from you.

I feel like there’s a great deal of uncertainty around the organization right now. Hopefully they make the right choices moving forward.

  116. RS June 13th, 2011 at 5:07 pm

But I’m glad Kennedy has been so successful because it just goes to show that the Yankees prospects are worth something even if they come up and struggle in the Bronx.

    LGY,

You are correct. I do not understand your argument. It is unknown if he can catch successfully, and if he cannot, he is a 21 year old DH for the Yankees. There are many more beneficial players for whom I would trade him.

Don’t misunderstand, I have been excited about his offense, but to hear people say they would only trade him for Felix or Johnson is way too optimistic he will achieve success.
