Jeter update

No decision on whether Jeter will have to go on the DL until after Joe Girardi meets with Dr. Chris Ahmad at 6. He will be out at least a week, Girardi says. Ramiro Pena will be activated either way.

It’s time for Joe and Cashman to manage the player as that’s what they’re paid to do.

  2. Nick in SF June 14th, 2011 at 4:32 pm

This was a somewhat underwhelming update.

Via Mark Newman, Steve Garrison is throwing in rehab games and Graham Stoneburner is throwing bullpens. Jeremy Bleich not close to a return

Newman also told me that Alan Horne is “close” to a return. As I reported yesterday, Horne has his last extended spring start on Friday.

The killer B’s should be able to pitch out of the bullpen in August/September when they’re nearing their innings limit. The only thing is you have to make sure they go into ST next year as starters so they can build up towards 200 innings.

It’s really not uncommon to break in a talented starter by pitching him in relief first. Morrow, Masterson, Oguando, CJ Wilson, Wainwright, and several other good young starting pitchers started their big league career in the bullpen.

  8. Erin June 14th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Please forgive the repeated Carig tweet. LOL

JackCurryYES Jeter: “I don’t like not to play, whether I’m going for 3,000 hits or 100 hits.”

JackCurryYES Jeter said the pain is the same today as it was last night. Added that the calf had been sore for a few days.

  9. Crawdaddy June 14th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

Which is why Cash and Joe has to do what’s best for the player.

  10. austinmac June 14th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

Hughes throwing at 89-92 does not sound all that exciting to me. I recall when Joba was throwing 93-94 in the spring the assumption was he would throw much harder later. For the most part, he did not. I expect Hughes in this same range four starts from now.

I would like some empirical evidence that velocity increases as ability to throw more pitches increases. I doubt it normally happens.

  11. SoS June 14th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

Dr. Phil is where Cashman, Girardi , Jeter and Posada need to go. Hash it all out, have a group hug and get back to winning 28.

  12. Crawdaddy June 14th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

Without a doubt, Cashman places him on DL. You let him plead his case then the GM makes the tough decision.

  13. Erin June 14th, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Ledger_Yankees Jeter said he felt charley horse sensation as he came off the field on defense; thought it was a cramp; was trying to stretch while on deck

We’re getting different information as Cashman stated on the Kay show that Hughes touched 93 today, but sat mainly at 92.

Funny thing is when Jeter runs his own team someday as those are his aspirations. There is no way he would let the club play in NL cities a man short for a day or two.

So Jeets your wrong here buddy.

  26. Bad Scooter June 14th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

If Jeter said that he is right. It’s not a big deal to play shorthanded for a few games if Jeter will be ready in 5-7 days. This happens alot. I guess it’s because it’s an aging Jeter it’s a big deal.

  27. G. Love June 14th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

I guess this makes me a bad fan, but Jeter is being ridiculous. If he can’t play for a week, he needs to go on the DL. End of story. Enough coddling his gamer/ironman legend. The team needs healthy bodies and options to win some games.

Even if the game gets rained out tonight, I don’t think it will solve the problem of who pitches in Bart’s spot. Because they will play a DH either tomorrow or Wednesday anyways, thus forcing a pitcher to take Bart’s spot.

If it was Jeter of 10 years ago I could understand not wanting to DL him. But losing this version of Jeter for 2 weeks isn’t a big deal. Nunez can do everything that he can and the extra range is nice also. I am glad the captain runs the team.

If Jeter is going to be out a week, an extra week isn’t a big deal for him to be on the DL. If it was Arod, Tex, Granderson or Cano obvioulsy you wouldn’t DL them but Jeter is being selfish.

  59. Bad Scooter June 14th, 2011 at 4:58 pm

If Jeter is active, but not available for a few games you won’t even notice it. How often do we use the 12th man in the bullpen anyhow? Our bench will not be thin because Pena will be here. Our bullpen will be a little thin, but like I said how often does the 12th man out there pitch? Do we really need Pendleton, Noesi and Marquez all active? No.

“Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs have added a LeBron James 2011 NBA Championship Replica Ring Giveaway to all fans on Thursday June 16 to enhance the Salute to the 1990s Chicago Bulls Championship Teams Night. The replica ring, which like LeBron’s is non-existent, will be handed out to all fans through the gates prior to the 7:00 p.m. game against Wisconsin.

In addition to the LeBron replica ring, the Chiefs are looking into whether or not the game can skip the fourth inning to honor King James who took off the fourth quarter of every finals game.

“We aren’t sure if the league will allow it,” said team President Rocky Vonachen. “But if LeBron doesn’t need to show up for the fourth, maybe we won’t either.”

Irony of all this Montero talk is that the biggest argument seems to be that he wouldn’t get enough consistent playing time. However, if you look at the fact that Cervy started the year on the DL and now Martin should be on the DL, there would have been more than enough chances to give Jesus playing time.

It’s fairly obvious by what Cashman said that Jeter’s DL bound. All of this fake outrage is just acting out the usual snorefest bull that Jeter thinks he’s above the team and that he runs the team. Just wringing out the last few drops they can until the annoucement comes.
    ///

Now that I got that trivia out of the way. Both Jeter and Martin need to be DL’d. Jeter can get his 3K at home and also get a nice rest. He’s 36 years old, & contrary to dubious opinion, I’ll take a rested Jeter at 36 as my EDSS over Eduardo, whom I have always liked on both sides of the ball. It also gives Nunez some extended time at SS in the event Jeter does go down again at some point.

Martin needs to be DL’d and Montero needs to be promoted. Comments that folks who think Montero needs to come up are clueless are clueless comments. How is this guy going to be scarred by being promoted while the starting catcher is seriously ailing & the backup is flailing? Even if they send him down again, the taste will serve him well because Martin may not be a sure thing going forward in terms of health, and then Montero will have had his initiation behind him should be be pressed into another emergency callup before his “time”.

This would be irrevocably detrimental to the youngster?

  79. Chambliss June 14th, 2011 at 5:12 pm

A strained calf is going to take several days to heal at Jeter’s age. He needs to do lots of stretching and take it easy. Jeter should go on the DL and take his time coming back.

If this were the playoffs he might be able to play through it, but he would be risking a more serious injury. I am sure that he wants to get 3,000 hits out of the way, but it is selfish for him to put this issue in front of winning right now.

For a guy who gets complemented all the time for being classy and doing things the right way, Jeter is handling this issue poorly.

  80. Jerkface June 14th, 2011 at 5:15 pm

    explaining it to me then

All other teams except Red Sox average less than 5 runs per game. By definition they can’t be scoring 5 runs per night. I also doubt they score 4 runs every night. So basically all the other teams are scoring less runs than the yankees on average and likely aren’t doing it in any more consistent a manner. They are worse. You’re whining about nothing. The Yankees might score 10 and then 0, but they’ll also score 5, 4,6,7,8,9,3,2,1 runs as well. Or more than 10.

Go to the scoring summaries on BB-Ref and calculate the % each team scores 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7+ runs a game, and the yankees will be near the top in high scoring games.

  81. LathamJoe June 14th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Jeter’s statement is irresponsible. With Martin’s balky back, they will be currently TWO men short. This team, for all the resources it has at its disposal, is lacking. Its time that management starts making decisions that are best for the team – nots its sacred cow players.
