TV/Time: YES/7:09
Weather: Fair, 80 degrees
Umpires: Mike Winters HP, Mike Everitt 1B, Chris Guccione 2B, Cory Blaser 3B
Roster move: The Yankees just announced a move within the last hour, signing 28-year-old righty Cory Wade to a major-league contract and sending righty Kevin Whelan back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Wade had been in Triple-A in the Rays’ system before he was given his release earlier this month and signed with the Yankees. He was 2-1 with a 1.21 ERA in 21 relief outings at Durham and went 1 2/3 scoreless in his one Scranton/Wilkes-Barre outing. He will wear No. 53. Rafael Soriano was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster.
Update, 7:11: Cervelli can’t throw to second base these days, another throw into center. But Ian Kinsler held, getting the steal even on a pitchout.
Update, 7:14: Bad beginning for Nova, single, steal, walk, RBI single for Josh Hamilton after Nova fell behind 2-0. Michael Young just brought in the second run when the Yankees couldn’t turn two.
Update, 7:24: It’s tied with one swing. No. 20 for Teixeira, belting a 2-1 fastball to the left-field seats after Holland had hit Granderson.
Update, 7:30: Double steal with A-Rod on the front end, second and third, one out.
Update, 7:32: The bases were loaded with one out, but Nunez grounded into a double play.
Update, 7:39: 1-2-3 second for Nova.
Update, 7:46: Single for Ramiro Pena, double for Nick Swisher, and it’s second and third, one out.
Update, 7:48: RBI groundout for Granderson, 3-2 Yankees.
Update, 7:53: Solo homer for Kinsler, 3-3 in the third.
Update, 7:55: There’s been on carryover from Nova’s strong start against Cleveland. Hamilton just hit a ground-rule double, sailing it over Granderson before it bounced over the center-field fence.
Update, 7:57: Infield hit for Young, first and third, one out.
Update, 7:59: Now it’s 4-3 Texas. Curtis Granderson just managed to catch a sinking liner by Adrian Beltre, so it was a sac fly.
Update, 8:08: 1-2-3 third for Holland.
Update, 8:17: This Cervelli throwing problem has to be a concern. There was another bad one down to second on a wild pitch. He’s just messed up mechanically right now.
Update, 8:25: Nova escapes a first-and-third, two-out jam. But his command is obviously off, unlike his last two times out.
Update, 8:28: Joe Girardi has talked about Eduardo Nunez’s offensive upside. There went the tying homer to the left-field seats from him here in the fourth.
Update, 8:40: Nunez is going to have to make the plays defensively, though. He let Hamilton’s sinking liner skip by him for an error leading off here in the fifth, his seventh. Five have been on throws. Nova followed up with a walk to Young.
Update, 8:42: Hector Noesi is warming. If he comes in, that almost assuredly will mean Brian Gordon gets the start tomorrow. Nova is at 76 pitches.
Update, 8:46: Nova gets out of it with a double-play ball.
Update, 8:55: Andruw Jones drives in A-Rod with a single for the 5-4 lead in the fifth, Rodriguez’s 1,799th run scored, which ties him for 16th with Ted Williams.
Update, 9:03: Cervelli contributes, lines an RBI single to right-center for the two-run lead. But Nunez is out trying to go to third.
Update, 9:09: Nova is done, gets a nice hand, I guess for keeping the Yankees in the game, because he had only one clean inning. There are two outs in the sixth. Luis Ayala is coming in.
Update, 9:13: Boone Logan is warming. Ayala just walked Kinsler on four pitches.
Update, 9:16: Great one-hop strike by Granderson to Cervelli to cut down the runner at the plate on the Elvis Andrus single to center. Mark Lowe is coming on to replace Holland for the sixth.
Update, 9:23: Home run for Ramiro Pena, 7-4. He had gone 166 at-bats without one dating to 2009.
Update, 9:29: Another homer for Teixeira, a two-run shot deep to right. It’s his 31st career multi-homer game, his second of the season. It’s his 11th time homering from both sides of the plate, tying the record held by Chili Davis and Eddie Murray. It’s 9-4. The bats are back, second straight big night.
Update, 9:42: Darren Oliver will pitch the seventh for Texas, still 9-4.
Update, 9:53: Two steals for Nunez here in the inning, another dimension he provides. But he was just thrown out at the plate on a grounder to third.
Update, 9:58: End of seven, 9-4. Cory Wade will now make his Yankees debut.
Update, 10:08: Nice first impression in a scoreless eighth. Wade was 4-4 with a 3.18 ERA in 82 relief outings with the Dodgers in 2008 and 2009. He was set back by shoulder surgery in March 2010. The Rays’ organization released him on Sunday and he signed as a minor-league free agent with the Yankees on Monday.
Update, 10:16: Three-run homer by Cano to the second deck in right, 12-4 for the second straight night.
Update, 10:21: Jeff Marquez will try to close it out. You would think his roster spot could be in danger with Brian Gordon coming tomorrow, but we’ll see.
Update, 10:27: Yankees win, 12-4, again.

Nova is not keeping the ball down
bad pitch out by Nova….but also a bad throw by Cervy
Bring Montero up!!
I worry about the Nova Hamilton matchup tinight
I wish Cervy would learn to put some of these throws in his pocket. Sometimes, the base is stolen, and there is nothing to be gained from trying to get the runner.
Do they do Roll Call at Dr. Andrews’ office too?
…was that really Mrs. GB?!
this is where Nova’s inconsistent delivery really hurts him….when he loses it he struggles to find it again……gotta try and limit the damage.
how do these weak ground balls always make it through the infield with Nova on the mound?!
its going to be a long night if Nova doesn’t start keeping the ball down
Nice job….you’ll trade the run for the out there any time. Get out with 2 and that’ll be fine.
how do these weak ground balls always make it through the infield with Nova on the mound?!
–
By not striking batters out you increase the chances of balls finding holes
Oh well. It was nice pitch. If he can get out of it, only giving up 2 runs, it’ll be okay.
Pena can’t hit a lick but he’s money with the glove….
The Brian Gordon era is right around the corner.
What exactly is Cervelli doing in the majors? He does nothing right.
“how do these weak ground balls always make it through the infield with Nova on the mound?!”
because Jeter is playing SS….oh wait

GB……Did receive that message as well ???? Also, least night a Brackman conversation came up and my question to you is this….Have you seen him throw this season and if so what have you noticed differently from last season when he was real good coming out of the pen ????
———————————————————————————————————————-
Pat, I got the message, but, not acting on it.
I’ve seen most of Brackman’s starts on computer MiLB-tv, not live. He just loses control and can’t get it back, velocity is down around 90-91 MPH mostly. Breaking pitches are shapr but they leave the strikezone early. The problem is, you never know what inning he loses it. First inning or 5th inning.
Don’t worry!!! Jones, Nunez, Cervelli and Peña are on our side.
Have to consider that a victory to make it out there with 2 runs. If 2 beats you then you shouldn’t win anyway.
Those last 3 ABs were encouraging…even the Hamilton ball wasn’t hit hard
The second I turn the game on I get annoyed.. first, seeing Nick Swisher batting leadoff and second Cervelli and his gawd awful throw. That guy is just absolutely WORTHLESS !
What is wrong with Girardi.. batting Swisher first?? I don’t give a crap what his “Binder Book” says about Swisher’s OBP .. Gardner is a legitimate leadoff hitter and got this team crankin yesterday, something that out Captain Derek Jet-uh [My Bob Shepard voice] has not been able to accomplish..
Sorry to say this, but I am actually glad that Jet-uh is on the DL.. give Nunez (or Nooney, stupid Joe calls him.. boy is he clever.. just put a “Y” on it) a shot to get some consistency with a bunch of games in a row… let’s see what he can do !! Surely, it will not be as bad as our old and declining beloved Derek Jet-uh
Way to work the count, Nick

Neither.
yay that was quick
Pat, I’ve been thinking that for over a year. It was in the bullpen that he finally got straightened out and the velocity returned.
What a shot! Tex!!!
Boom!!!
yay Tex!!! glad a Yankee batter made someone pay for a HBP
Love a 4 for 23 from out #3 hitter who at the beginning of the year said his batter average last year was embarrassing, that he has to bring it up this year.. and seems he forgot how to hit for average.. or is he already another declining veteran?? Maybe it’s contagious.
KABOO YA!
Tex is an elite bat from the right side….his swing is so much more direct from that side.
That is how you pay a team back for hitting you.
Tex!!! There you go, Ivan, you’ve got your second chance…
Jeez Michael Kay. It’s only the first inning.
5 for 24 .. he’s always good for a HR.
Now watch we won’t score for the rest of the game. Seems to be like that whenever we get a HR in the first inning.

ESPN broadcast talking about how the Yankees rely on homers….shocker.
Cano has become a bit too patient at the plate. His aggressiveness is what set him apart and made him an elite hitter. Hopefully, he can find the middle ground between the two extremes.

———————-
I love how they generally harp on that meme AFTER the Yanks hit a homer, when it’s not really relevant. The time to talk about it is when the Yanks leave a ton of runners stranded on base, not after they just cleared the bases.
Cano has become a bit too patient at the plate. His aggressiveness is what set him apart and made him an elite hitter. Hopefully, he can find the middle ground between the two extremes.
–
Are you serious? Do you mean like right now in this PA where he singles? Because he’s been aggressive all year… he has never at any point been ‘too patient’
Robbie continues to go to left field. Good signs!
considering we won our last WS by getting tons of clutch HRs throughout the postseason, I’m not going to complain about that formula for success
And the Yankees have had at least two 6-run rallies on this homestand without the benefit of a HR…so ESPN can suck it
That’s a beautiful AB by Cano….he’s been doing that a lot more lately. Looking more like he’s supposed to.
Thanks, GB!
Blake,
Explain this. How can a team rely on hr’s? Didnt realize yankees had a automatic homerun (easy)button that we press…LOL
Come on Andrew….I know you can do it!
double steal….me likey
I love double steals….Alex is a really smart ballplayer
I love the double steal!
Slick moves by NY.

——
No. I mean over the past 10 games or so. He is definitely taking a lot more pitches and laying off some pitches that are right in his zone. Maybe it’s only me.
My Fav Yankee -> Arod (but really don’t like his personality)
My Fav Yankee, personality included -> (Curtis Granderson)
Most overated Yankee -> Mark Texeiria
Most underated Yankee -> David Robertson
Most admirable Yankee -> Derek Jeter
Most Boston-like-persona Player -> Robinson Cano (his David Ortiz HR shenanigans)
Dumbest baseball Smarts Yankee -> Brett Gardner / Joe Girardi
Smartest baseball smarts Yankee -> Arod
Make me saddest Yankee when retires -> Mariano Rivera
Make me happiest when retires -> Joe Girardi / Derek Jeter (tho Jetes will be missed, but is already)
Power and Spead! Take that ESPN!!!
re: ESPN and the rest of the dopes
I love how the fact that the Yankees have had the BEST possible outcome of an at bat more than any other team is being used in any way as a criticism.
So what would be better? that those hard hit balls were doubles instead?
Time for Nunez to deliver in the ‘clutch’
No luck there
#jeterreplacementjoke
why hacking at the first pitch with the freaking bases loaded!!!!!!!!!!! gah
BS…..terrible luck there….that ball was scalded.
that was bad luck…just make sure to continue to hit the ball hard and not let Holland off the ropes
Spoke too soon…
Ghost, if any messages about changing info for this site comes in, get rid of it if it doesn’t come from jeff Marz (technician) or chad’s crew with their e-mails
that was really bad luck, but good hack from nunez
One thing I like about Nunez is that he never gets cheated at the plate. He swings the bat with authority and goes through the strike zone with good balance. It’s no surprise that he always tends to make solid contact.
Will do. Thanks again, GB
Good 1st inning to get those runs back right away….shut down inning here would be nice here…..then unleash Cervelli and Pena !

LOL, Are you for real???!!??? Maybe you are a web bot.. because if you watched the games this week you would see how many times this guy has swung at the first pitch and made an out.
You can NEVER EVER have too much patience at the plate .. that’s just the silliest thing I ever saw posted here.. but even if it were true, Cano sure as hell does not have patience, it’s his biggest issue !! Wow, ineffable really.
betances is having a rough start tonight. 2 runs in the 1st including a homer and starting off the 2nd with a hit, WP and walk
Good to see Tom Coughlin in the stands!
Any time, Ghost
Has anyone suggested looking into signing Scott Kazmir to be a lefty reliever?
I doubt he has anything left in the tank but he’ll be a free agent shortly so it wouldn’t hurt to check in on him.
Nunez has a nice swing and good bat speed…if he plays enough though teams are going to start junking him to death and trying to make him chase. He can hit a fastball….the next trial will be when pitchers start to test his plate discipline.
No. I mean over the past 10 games or so. He is definitely taking a lot more pitches and laying off some pitches that are right in his zone. Maybe it’s only me.

Cano’s June P/PA is 3.36, so he hasn’t been anymore patient than usual
“The bases were loaded with one out, but Nunez grounded into a double play.”
Stellar reporting there by Heyman. Could this guy’s writing be any more lifeless? What a waste. LoHud would be much better off employing someone else in this role when Chad cannot do it.
“Has anyone suggested looking into signing Scott Kazmir to be a lefty reliever”
I’d take a look….he’s left handed and breathing.
Nunez lasered into a double play would be more appropriate reporting.

I think that you just jumped the shark with that one. Of course you can have too much patience at the plate. You can have too much of anything. However, Cano’s problem is definitely not having too much patience at the plate.
sweet inning for Nova
Nice job Nova! Now….release the Hounds! (Cervy and Pena)
Nice play by Cervy, and a nice inning from Nova.
Pretty sure P jumped the shark when he gave out awards including handing a most overrated badge to a guy that has been one of our top producers all year and just hit a 2 run HR *this game*
blake,
yeah – I wouldn’t hold out much hope but he’s only given starting a shot. Maybe he can dial it up a little more if he’s throwing one inning stints (if his main problem is fastball velocity as reported.)
Cano’s June P/PA is 3.36, so he hasn’t been anymore patient than usual

Alright. So I guess it only seemed like that to me as I missed quite a few games due to cramming fro finals.

Maybe you saw that one PA where Cano almost walked, that might have skewed your sample.
Tex is only on pace for about 50 homers this year…..
BD,
he might be totally shot….but he’s still young and the velocity loss is mysterious. He could have a 2nd act as a reliever or something maybe.

What is wrong with you?? you have to get your prioities in order! Besides, you don’t need that fancy book larnin’.
look at that Pena got a hit
way to go pena!!, very good at bat
So what happened to Whelan actually getting a chance on the team? I can’t believe that they sent him back to AAA after 2 appearances. Why is Cashman picking up these random guys and not giving the guys from AAA a chance??!
Pena was hitting well down in AAA if I recall, I would take a nice BABIP fueled run while Jeter is on the DL from him. Maybe even a poke or two.

Normally, I’d agree, but the guy they got has major league experience and was doing very well off shoulder surgery. He has as much upside as Whelan and they didnt have to lose Whelan.
Hilarious, beltre digging in the ground like a badger
Beltre lol
That ball was scalded!! Nice work, Nick!
The Yankees are a better lineup vs LHP mainly because Jeter, Tex, and Swisher are all better against them (Swisher and Jeter significantly so)

He’d been outhitting Montero, statistically speaking
Feb 4, 2011:
According to FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees have “kicked around” the thought of making trade offers for Scott Kazmir and other lefties (in the wake of losing Andy Pettitte from last year’s rotation.)
trade offer?
P,
you going to Mike’s house tonight to watch the hockey game?
Beltre loves digging himself into the ground. IIRC he almost spun himself into the ground swinging at an Edwar Ramirez changeup a few years ago.
Got a run in….nice job.

The way Cash has been stockpiling pitchers, I’ve got to think that passing on Kazmir means that CAsh thinks that he is done. He also passed on Wang. Remember, we’re talking about the guy that signed Jon Lieber, knowing that he would be on the shelf for over a year.
He has as much upside as Whelan and they didnt have to lose Whelan.
———
Pendleton should of been sent down instead of Whelan. He hasn’t been impressive at all. They need guys that can pitch at the back end of the bullpen with a lead smaller than 4 runs. Whelan was more of a need and Pendleton is a mop up guy.
Fellas. Watching game on gameday. How does Swish double to third?

This is gonna be a slugfest tonight
Great. Kinsler was batting .220 coming into this series.
Final score prediction.
9-7 Yankees.
Mo finally gets a save.
Granderson a bit too shallow for Hamilton on that one?
sigh if only Nova was consistent
Noesi will be in soon enough if Nova doesn’t fix his issue tonight
Nova stinks
Ghostwriter,
Kazmir is about to his free agency after being waived (and he will clear) by the Angels.
So of course Cashman passed in the offseason, and he’ll probably pass now, but if they can pick him and assign him to the minors to try and convert to a lefty specialist reliever… maybe it’s worth consideration.
Suli_B June 15th, 2011 at 7:56 pm

That makes sense. As I mentioned earlier, I haven’t seen Kazmir in a couple of years, so I have no clue about how he’s throwing.
Thanks Cano
god i hate these ESPN people…they are horrible it was obviously a catch
“I haven’t seen Kazmir in a couple of years, so I have no clue about how he’s throwing.”
pretty bad….stuff is gone.
I really hate when we give up the lead more than once in the same ball game. We come bck, grab the lead, and give it back. Very aggravating.
Great catch.
Robbie makes that play so often….I don’t know what’s up with him defensively this year
Cano’s nonchalant attitude can be so frustrating at times.
Syd –
If you were watching YES, there was no question about the catch.
(and there wasn’t.)
He better stop hanging curveballs to Cruz

yeah – his fastball that used be mid-90s is now upper 80s. He’s been getting shelled.
like I said, slim chance, but maybe he could still convert to a reliever and get lefties out.
Well it looks like we have a clearer picture of who the mystery pitcher will be tomorrow.
Triple Short of a Cycle June 15th, 2011 at 7:49 pm
P,
you going to Mike’s house tonight to watch the hockey game?
>>>
As soon as my dad gets here, probably.
Nova is what he is. A 5 starter. Terribly inconsistent with no swing n miss stuff.
dont look now but the greatest offense ever assembled hasn’t scored in 13 innings.
inconceivable!
Chris Hammond could get guys out with a mid-eighties fastball. But he had that crazy Bugs Bunny change-up.
Looks like Ivan the Terrible tonight. Too bad Neosi is slated for Thursday. The Yankees could’ve used him tonight. Send Niva back to AAA and try Neosi or Phelps or Gordon. How could they possibly be worse?
It’s going to be a barn burner tonight in The Bronx…..I really had high yet reasonable expectations for Ivan Nova this season….In fact I had him being in the run for ROY…..Too spotty this season
“Too bad Neosi is slated for Thursday”
Noesi is up in the pen….they haven’t made a decision on him for tomorrow yet
FREE JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Texas is a very good hitting team and Nova is still settling in. Look up impatience and what you get is a Yankee fan.
Nova is fine. You can’t demote a pitcher every time that he has a bad start. The Yanks are still in the game, with a chance to win.
Chris Hammond was fun to watch when he was pitching well with all the different speeds.
Kazmir throws a slider and a changeup as well but it’s been a while since he pitched well as a starter.
Nova has the ‘stuff’ to get out major league batters and consistency will come with experience.
P,
cool have fun
I would like to see Noesi start and Nova go to the bullpen or AAA to work on his issues. Noesi has much better stuff and Nova really isn’t impressive. Nova’s stuff is very average and he needs a 3rd pitch to succeed in the majors. Good hitting teams are going to kill him.
Nova is pitching very well for his rookie year (or did last year count as rookie?). He needs to be given a chance.. I think he’s been quite good considering.
This is only the 20th start of Ivan Nova’s career. He’s 24.
If he weren’t inconsistent right now, he’d be the exception.
It wouldn’t hurt if he worked on repeating his delivery, but relax on declaring the guy a career #5 starter.
A killer CB, a 95 mph FB and a great sinker. Average? I beg to differ.
There goes Robbie Cano with his awesome patience reaching for a ball wayyyyy offff the plate.. man is he really patient !
anyone know how Casey Kelly is doing this year? Funny how he leaves the Sox and you never hear anything about him anymore
Anyone can have a walk-up song, but Andruw Jones should get a song after he’s walking back to the dugout:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r9To–8IVY
Why is Adruw on this team again?
Interesting that this C R 9 fellow can get access to the mail address list of Lohud. That usually would lead me to suspect an inside job, or prior employee who might be looking for vengeance. I see he is back with names like GBwife, and perhaps Frozen Rope…
The lesson is NEVER enter your ID or password info on any LINK page asking for your to verify something. Go directly to the site itself and sign in…once signed in, you should have a message if they were trying to reach you.
It’s really embarrassing that Girardi allows Cano to jog to 1st base. You are supposed to set a good example for young players and it’s amazing that it doesn’t bother the manager that he is so lazy. If an infielder bobbles a ball he would never be safe. You can gurantee you would never see Jeter and Arod do that.
This is what many rookie starters are….good some games, so so some games, and bad some games….it’s not unusual…..that said, Nova is going to struggle with consistency until he can throw the ball more consistently pitch to pitch and batter to batter.
Triple,
He’s been ok.
~4 ERA, 55/20 (k/bb ratio) over 70 innings in AA. Putting too many guys on base.
He may very well be a quality major league starter, but it’s really ridiculous how he was handed this “future ace, top 30 prospect” crap without actually producing.
Maybe it’s just second basemen’s?
Soriano, Cano?
$14.5M eaten by Angels for Scott Kazmir!?!? Wow!
27 years old…time for Bartolo Colon procedures.

Actually, A-Rod hasn’t really been busting it out of the box for some time now.
Damned Cano. he should have run into center field and jumped for that Torreabla hit. Lazy bum.,

I think that there is too much of that kind of thing on this club.
Nova really has to work on his mechanics. He is so inconsistent and because of that he gets the ball up way too often.
BD,
totally agree. He was given that ranking purely based on hype. EVen though he had a 5 ERA in double A it was ok because he was young in age for double A.

One word. HIP
If you see Girardi digging his nose on national t.v., be affraid.
OMG stop throwing Cervelli!!!!!!! YOU ARE HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!
If Cervelli throws the ball in the forest and nobody sees it does it still goes down as an error?
Another terrible throe by Cervelli. How bad can Montero be behind the plate?
Cervelli is really bad
That should read ‘throw’
FREE JESUS
Cervelli puzzles me.
FREE JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can someone please tell me why Cervelli is on the team instead of Molina?? My grandma could make better throws to 2nd base, he doesn’t do anything good to help the team.

I’m starting to see him a bit more as a bullpen guy, kind of like Ramiro Mendoza–somebody that can get you a key groundball in a tough spot, and make the occasional start. It’s too early for me to tell.
Cervelli is pathetic catcher
Francisco Cervelli is an awful baseball player.
ARod is nursing the hip.

I know. But sometimes I think he becomes a bit too cautious with his movements.
Cervelli rocks!
Cervy has Knoblochitus.
GB….Lot’s of experts here ranging from the Front Office to the Dugout and all the way onto the field

If burnett can lower his era by a run & a 1/2,walk less batters, hit less batters he would be an ace.
A pitchers with nova’s bad peripheral numbers is not going to be given long on the yankees.
Maybe the pirates.
Pat M,
you think McCourt is gonna make payroll?
They should bring up romine or montero.
Cervelli if he is not going to hit,has to at least not hurt the team defensively.
Is romine off the dl?
I know he was or is close.
Nova should be working on his consistency in AAA. Growing pains are one thing but his on and off – ness is maddening.
From MLBTR:
“The Red Sox will not be serious players for Jose Reyes in free agency, tweets SI’s Jon Heyman. They would probably not be inclined to block Jose Iglesias.”

Ahh – Reyes blocking Iglesias. You can’t make this stuff up.
Nuney!
tie game!
Jeter should be worried when these 2 weeks are up lol
A pitchers duel in Tampa. 0-0 bottom 6. I wonder what happened to that murderers row they had in boston?
Nunez with another strong swing. This guy can hit.
BD,
don’t they mean rey ordonez 2.0?

blake,
When did that ever stop them before?
Pat,
It’s really hard to figure out why some of these people don’t have coaching jobs or not major league players.
Nunez has some really fast hands, doesn’t he? A young Aaron, Banks type wrists and body.
Hopefully if Nunez keeps raking. Once Jete comes back he can shag some balls in the outfield with MO and get some more playing time.
pat M,
So how do you see that situation playing out….do you think the Dodgers will shed payroll? What if Cuban was allowed to buy them….could you imagine him in LA.
Good swings by the bottom of the lineup.
Triple….problem is that Jed Hoyer doesn’t run the Mets. Alderson knows what he’s doing.
McCourt also has to cough up $8 mil to pay off Ramirez by 30 June.
This is going to be a bullpen game. Let’s hope ours is up to snuff.
blake,
they mean in the offseason as a free agent…
but still.
The idea that they’d decide against pursuing an elite player simply because of Iglesias is awfully silly.
“McCourt also has to cough up $8 mil to pay off Ramirez by 30 June.”

Or get some incriminating photos of manny using his fertility drugs by then.
Nunez does have great wrists.

Nunez> 37 year old form of Jeter ?
Wally Pip didn’t have 3,000 hits.
The rs payroll is at 163.5 million with agone making 6.3 million.
Next year he will make 22 million, bringing their payroll to around 180 million.
Their not signing anymore big contracts for a while.
SoS June 15th, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Ramirez takes him to court and/or he’ll lose the team to MLB. It’s sort of like a Mcdonald’s franchise. All you own is the building and the right to market the product. You don’t really own the team. MLB owns it.
Nunez isn’t replacing Jeter…..but they may need to find more playing time for him even when Jeter comes back….at various positions.
Ole!
That is the bad Nunez
Ron,
not exactly….they only have 126 million committed to next year and that’s counted Gonzalez’s 22 million. They have a lot of money coming off the books…..they will have to replace it though so it’ll just depend on how they do that.
“Next year he will make 22 million, bringing their payroll to around 180 million. Their not signing anymore big contracts for a while.”
————-
not quite.
they have a good amount coming off the payroll (~55M)
of course they’ll need to replace some guys but they’ll have flexibility for sure.
With Nova on the mound an error is the last thing that you want to see. This inning is usually pumpkin time for him anyway. I would get the bullpen up.
Okay, let’s give that run right back…

I imagine that the ownership group that owns the Dodgers (if not the Dadgers, per se) might file for bankruptcy protection. However, I’ve got to think that it won’t come to that.
Blake,
Make sure you count in Oritiz being resigned in those figures. Assuming he keeps this up.
GB,
Wasnt aware of that. He better go make up with his ex wife. It worked for me.
Texas’s lineup makes you pay
Ahh – Reyes blocking Iglesias. You can’t make this stuff up.
——————-
Isn’t he better defensively than Ozzie Smith? Don’t want to block that!
Ortiz will give them a home town discount. I’d say 2 years at 20 with a team option for a third year
“Blake,
Make sure you count in Oritiz being resigned in those figures. Assuming he keeps this up.”
———-
why?
the better he plays, the more $$ and years he is going to command. The Sox may be less likely to sign him if he keeps playing at this pace – I don’t see the Sox committing big $ to a DH – for obvious reasons (as the Yanks should probably avoid having a high-paid DH too)
Rob_NY,
Chuck Norris can’t even hit a ball past him
Drew, Ortiz, Papelbon, Wakefield, Varitek etc.. all come off the books for the Sox after this season….so they’lll either have to re-sign them or replace them. They could offset Agon’s salary by letting Papelbon walk by that would leave them with a very thin pen and they’ll be a starter short anyway most likely.
blake….Even if McCourt was somehow to work things out with his ex wife who hates him, he would still have to convince Sellig that the 300 million he’d get from Fox wouldn’t be used to buy her out, or to make payments on his defaulted loans…..Old Bud wants him out of baseball and he’s just sitting back waiting for him not being able to make payroll come months end…..
The thing that I like about Nova is that he is a competitor. there doesn’t seem to be any quit in him.
Nice scoop Tex!

I don’t see how that’s possible considering how many people said Nova was horrible just an hour ago.
–
Nova has his issues, but thats just the short sightedness of a pitcher giving up runs early. Most people assume the longer a pitcher goes the more runs they are going to give up. Like when Garcia looked like he was gonna get hammered and he ended up throwing like 7 innings giving up 4.
Basically, let the guy keep working at it, he might surprise you.
Not a great start by Nova but very serviceable…..he’s leaving with a lead and he has given them a chance to win. I’ll take that on an off day….

way to go Granderson!!!!
I was concerned how slowly he went after it, If that’s bernie it’s a tie game
Really nice throw, catch and tag to finish off the inning. Now score 5 and hold ‘em
Granderson is a beast….great throw and a great tag by cervelli.
Nice throw from Granderson and good job from Cervelli with the tag and holding onto the ball. Why was Torrealba’s arm around Cervelli’s neck? lol

that’s it Ramiro!!!

I absolutely guarantee that both Nunez and Pena will homer tonight. Take out a second mortgage on it, bet the college fund, leverage both kidneys, this will happen.”
I won’t be shocked, or disappointed for that matter, if we hear about the Yankees signing Kazmir once he clears waivers.
Look, you sign him to a minor league deal for the minimum, send him to Tampa to work some stuff out and if he doesn’t have it as a starter maybe you ask him how he feels about testing things out from the pen.
He doesn’t have the control I would want out of a reliever, but maybe in short spurts he would be better.
As for Wade and Gordon (and even Marquez) – the Yankees need relievers…there’s no harm in seeing what these guys can do – they obviously have swing and miss stuff as evidenced by their minor league numbers and the Yankees aren’t looking at them as long term solutions, just guys who they can catch lightning in a bottle with without having to waste their prospects in undefined bullpen roles.
Gordon will probably start tomorrow simply because Noesi is very good in his role
Teix!

Pena still looks like a 17 year old high school junior
Random question – with Martin hurt and Cervelli playing like poop – do you give Jorge some games behind the plate in the NL parks?
I don’t – I think if you do he’s either going to be awful or get hurt. But the options aren’t good right now so I think it’s debatable.
Wonder if we’ll see Marquez or the new guy in the 7th
Trader, I would have. Can’t use all of the pen up tonight with a day game tomorrow.
Big disappointment that inning. I asked for 5 runs and they only got 3.

Obviously, it’s early, but they are starting to remind me of the ’09 crew, with the rash of injuries, and the way that they seem to be rising to the occasion, with everybody chipping in to win. Time will tell; they still have to figure out a way to beat the Sox.
I cannot believe that Boston is going to win the Stanley Cup – I am going to be ill. Luongo – one of the biggest goats in NHL history.

Betances had some control issues and issues with infield dense and took a loss. He threw 95 pitches.

Boston Dave and ac 1 – you have my deepest sympathies. Almost as great as I have for GB over his relationship with Nurse Karloff.
Cashman could not have been more clear when he was on with Francesa. He doesn’t believe the trade option will pay off for pitching help; the price for anyone good is just to high according to him. He obviously doesn’t want to trade their high-end chips.
He said he was going to be mix-and-matching. Calling up guys from SWB, sending others down, picking up guys who have been let go by other teams, etc.
Of course, it’s Brian Cashman talking.

I should probably get the baseball bat handy in case I got woken up in the middle of the night.
I would love to see Noesi start tomorrow. He’s earned it, plus he’s home grown. Gordon seems more like another Small or Dustin Moseley, with maybe better stuff. We already have Freddy Garcia for that role.
Gary Sanchez was 2-4 with a double, but 2 strikeouts. Rob Segedin with a homer for Charleston. They still lost 5-3. Scranton was off tonight.

No, he wasn’t on waivers, he opted out of his contract to become a free agent and chose to sign with the Yankees (who promised to put him on the 25)
Middle of order getting hot spells doom for rest of league.
Joe, you’re right. Gordon is strictly an off-speed pitcher, but, in the minors seemed to get a lot of swings and misses. 7-8 strikeouts every 8 innings and few walks. Small, Gardia, Tommy John type from the right side. All NY needs is for a hand full of good starts/wins from him until the shock troops return.
That was a big fly. Cano’s homers are always spectacles, either those scalded line drives or just huge shots.

Looks like Cory Wade was on major league roster in 2008 with the Dodgers and did real well as a reliever with a 2.27ERA in 71.1 innings but doubled his ERA the following year and was granted free agency, signing with the Rays but I don’t believe he made a major league appearance with them until now as a Yankee.
Big deal, those homers will dry up when they face good pitchers like Neftali Feliz.
Bojo – true.
Robbie has such an effortless-appearing swing. Just beautiful, like Alex in that regard.
Feliz having a rough year. I wonder if Texas messed with him in ST, you know, with that starter/reliever stuff. Ya know, Nolan Ryan doesn’t know anything about developing pitching…….
Cory Wade was overworked in 2008, according to some, and that led to injuries over the past several years.
and was granted free agency, signing with the Rays but I don’t believe he made a major league appearance with them until now as a Yankee.

Had shoulder surgery, why he missed a year. Came back looking very good in AAA for the Rays, a mystery why he wasn’t on their team.
***9*** innings and few walks

The biggest issue a pitcher with Gordon’s stuff faces going to the Majors is that the hitters are vastly more disciplined. So while he might be getting swings and misses at breaking balls out of the zone in AAA, a good offensive team like Texas would take those pitches and make him throw balls in the strike zone. I’m not saying that’s the case – I’ve never seen Gordon pitch an inning – but it’s usually the buggaboo that hits junk ball journeymen.
It’s what killed Ian Kennedy here.
That said – there’s no arguing with his minor league numbers and there’s very little risk in giving him a shot.
Oh because they been getting worked over recently so no room for them to get any work
Every one is ready to call Ryan a genius for the new way he develops pitchers. Let’s see over the next few years. Billy Martin followed similar pattern with Oakland and had early success before blowing out all their arms.
We’l see where Texas is with arms like Feliz and Lewis very shortly IMO.
I wonder if after 20 something pitches feliz is going to be available tomorrow
Ryan turned CJ Wilson from a middle reliever into one of the best lefties in baseball. And didn’t need mindless rules either – went from 70ish innings to 200.
Chip – that’s the rub. mL hitters are less disciplined, as a rule. It will be an interesting start tomorrow.
Pedro Gomez just reported that Phil Hughes is three starts away from re-joining the rotation.
We shall see.

He was also near 30.
Nova wasn’t great tonight, but, he limited a lot of possible damage in there. The Yanks were able to clean up the rest of the game with the lowest tiers of the bullpen. Makes for a well rested pen tomorrow. he’s doing what he’s supposed to do. Keep ‘em close and throw 10-12 wins into the win hopper.
Only way Marquez stays up after tonight is if the Yankees decide they want to use Noesi in more short relief roles and decide to keep Jeff around as the new long man and send Pendleton down instead.
Curious who they dump off the 40 – my guess, since they are going outside the org for guys like Marquez, Wade and Gordon instead of calling him up, is Carlyle.
Marquez pitching tonight might be his going away gift. He might be the one DFA’d. Pendleton has pitched well enough to be sent to AAA.

Just get it over with, and tell us why the Yankes don’t have a prayer of winning the next game … so we can count on that W also. Like the way you implied we wouldn’t have a chance against “Ogando 7-0 2.10″ …
Marquez reminds me of Aceves – nice easy delivery, throws strikes, not overpowering but has some nice movement and throws a few different pitches that can get outs.
Feliz was just all over the place in that inning….put a little seed of doubt in his mind for later.

He was looked at as a 4th or 5th starter coming into the season and that’s exactly what he’s been…no complaints here.
ESPN goes with the “journeyman minor leaguer” as a title for tomorrow’s starter Gordon.
He started pitching when he was 28 and it’s only been a few years…
Hardly fitting of being a “journeyman” as I believe JF also mentioned.
Jeff Marquez– stay healthy and you will be in the hall of fame.

and we’re not exactly talking about a light hitting club he’s going against.
On the plus side – I doubt anyone on the Rangers has faced Gordon.
Texas is a fastball hitting team. they’ll chase a lot of breaking pitches in the dirt. As long as the offense gets to Wilson more than they have lately, Gordon just needs to keep ‘em close.
Looks like Betances got it together and pitched ok….5 innings, 1 ER, 8 K’s,….but 4 walks. ERA is 1.76 now.
6 straight scorless innings pitched by the Yankees against a very potent offense. Hoping they complete the sweep this time after missing their chance against the Indians.
10 Games over for the first time this year
Cashman looks like he means to win the Exec of Year.
Pedro Gomez is an ESPN baseball reporter (I was watching the ESPN broadcast tonight). He was on the Barry Bonds beat during the career home run record chase, I think.
Pendleton’s done pretty well since coming up, so it’d be a tough job sending him to Scranton now, but, really one of the logical choices. Carlyle will be put on waivers is my guess, unless a multi-player deal is in the offing.

Like I said, if the plan is to move Noesi into shorter relief behind Robertson then you need a long man which means Marquez stays and Lance gets sent down (and Carlyle gets DFA’d) if they’re content with Noesi in long relief then Marquez gets DFA’d and hopefully accepts AAA assignment.

Bruins won. Geez I thought the Red Sox were ugly, but this Bruin’s team beats them hands down.
GB
I dont know what was up with Marshall, he was walking everyone though it seemed. The hits were just finding holes, he definitely was not sharp. The TY did a good job not striking out though and through the first 5 innings it seemed every ball was just hit to a fielder. They could have had the game won earlier but on a botched steal of home attempt(Lyerly stole 2nd thinking they would try to get him and Abe Almonte got thrown out at home) Zoilo followed the failed steal with a single to left which would have scored the run anyway(instead Lyerly tried to score from 2nd and got thrown out) It wasnt a pretty game for either team so I am glad that we again came out on top.
“Bruins won. Geez I thought the Red Sox were ugly, but this Bruin’s team beats them hands down.”
All Boston teams/players are ugly.
Certainly hope also that the Yankees look into getting Kazmir if they feel they can turn him around.

The strongest argument against signing Kazmir is the fact that in 15.1 AAA IP, he allowed 29 ER, 20 BB with only 14 K. That’s bad.

TY,
Thanks for the tampa updates. How are Ibarra and Z. almonte doing in the All Star voting? They just might slip in.
Seems that Kazmir is finished. Not looking at the numbers right now, but he hasn’t been right in a long time.
GB
they dont do all star voting here. I dont think they are going to make the reserves though. The game is Saturday. I think Ibarra got robbed of it because he has been consistently good since the beginning of the season on both his offense and defense. Maybe they will make the post season all star team.
Is there anything wrong with Kazmir that a little stem cell injection wont fix?
If they sign Zamir to a MiLB contract, they’ll pay him almost nothing. Put him in the pen and see if he can do it there. It’s a no lose situation. Same thing with Cantu. Nothing to lose.
GB
Gustavo Nunez of the Flying Tigers got on the all-star team for the second year in a row. how sad that he has been in high A long enough to make the all-star team 2 years in a row. I am going to the ASG because its in Clearwater, really looking forward to it, there are so many good batters and pitchers in this league and I am eager to see them all in the same game.

That’s not news. Why else would Calif have eaten all that money?
And it takes no talent to see what’s wrong … to see the obvious, what everybody else can see.
The talent comes in seeing the opportunity, and developing it, if there’s any there.
See Bartolo.
Thanks again, TY. Wasn’t aware that the AS game was Saturday. Hope they can find room in Trenton after the break and move them up.
GB
they can send Bradley Suttle and Melky Mesa back to Tampa and I wouldnt mind sending up Lyerly and Zoilo Almonte.
Kazmir’s psyche was forever brutalized by the 2009 ALCS Game 4.
TY, going to the AS game? Great to hear. Get plenty of autographs. Not aware of a Gustavo Nunez . I need to look him up. It is strange that he can make the AS team and not move up, and then play well enough to make it the next year and still not move up. Good inside info to the league. How’s Claibourne looking?
Ramiro Pena must have been juicin down in Scranton.
That was some game by him.
Aldo the difference with Bartolo is that he was successful in Winter Ball. I don’t disagree about trying to find those opportunities (K. Wood come to mind), and sure what the hell, give Kazmir a chance — I just don’t think he can do it in the AL east.
They sent Whelan down?
Why?
Kazmir has nowhere to go but up.
It wasn’t that long ago that he had 783 Ks in 723 IP over all or parts of 5 seasons.
I have no idea what’s going on with him, but whatever it is, it’s worth a look.
The guy’s, what, 27? How can a ship sail at that age???
TY, I know that you have a soft spot for Suttle, but, you can’t have all of them. There might be a Trenton cougar that would be heart broken if he leaves town.

Lakeland has some very good hitting guys over there. If I wasnt a TY fan I could definitely become of fan of them as I have been to their park probably 6 or 7 times. I know their lineup and who plays what position which is sad. Gustavo Nunez played 128 games for Lakeland last year, he is the #23 prospect in the Tigers organization according to my 2011 baseball America prospect handbook.

Is there anything wrong with Kazmir that a little stem cell injection wont fix?
———————————
Why not
No Kazmir.
Colon also looked good when scouts were watching him,i believe in winter ball.
There has to be something that looks good about him to draw interest.
There is a reason why teams don’t go signing every player that once looked good.
I won’t pretend to know anything about a pitcher’s delivery, but I know he doesn’t have the stereotypical body type that scouts like for pitchers. Is it possible that he just can’t withstand the repetition of motion, or whatever? He’s not Pedro.
Maybe the Yankees can fix him, I don’t know. But the Rays traded him at the right time. He hasn’t really been the same since.
GB
haha, I dont care if any cougars up there will be sad if Suttle leaves Trenton, I was sad to see him leave here. The TY have Suttle on the cover of their second issue of the program, I was pretty happy about that.
Just 52-45 the rest of the way ensures 90 wins and a WC berth. Even as shaky as they sometimes look, that is almost a lock.
The Yanks should definitely take a look at Kazmir. But I am sure a lot of teams will and I would be surprised if he doesn’t sign with an NL team. A lot of teams are going to call his agent hoping that they can fix him.
wow Pena’s HR was a bomb.
90 wins isn’t enough we need OVER 91.5 wins.
Why would the Yanks put Whelan on the 40 man and then send him down after two appearances?
Pendleton sucks. Send him to Scranton.
This kid that Oakland has playing 2nd base, Jemile Weeks is going to be a handful on the bases. Lord, is he fast…and he can hit a bit..with gap type power. The third time I’ve seen him..3 triples in about 8-10 games so far.
I was out all night – good to see that the Yanks won again.
Wade is a good pitcher.
Rays fans are really pissed that they let him go. They have been wanting him to get called up for a while.
Rays fans think that Sonnanstine has naked pics of Friedman.
GB
an encouraging sign tonight was that Taylor Grote went 1-2 with 2 walks and no strikeouts. Jose Quintana continues to impress me. Too bad he is only in high-A. he is a lefty and has great numbers he has only allowed 4 ER(3 of which came in 2 innings on May 6th) in 29IP. He has only walked 9 and struck out 32. Lefties are batting .167 off him and righties only .220.

I have never talked to a “Rays Fan” that is knowledgable of their farm team. They knew that Hellickson was good only after he came up. I bet the majority of them dont know who Matt Moore is. They just know that they shouldnt root for the Yankees or Red Sox.
91.5 is the season over/under total at my sportsbook, yes.
I mean farm system
I actually saw Andruw Jones not smile for a few seconds tonight.
It was like watching a lunar eclipse. A very rare and special occurrence.
Wade was a great, great pickup.
He has very real ability, for sure. He has a chance to be a factor in this pen if he can stay healthy.
Another example of why relief pitching is really fungible and why paying Soriano what we did was dumb.
Thanks, TY. Maybe if you’re nice to Grote and wink at him, he’ll start hitting and catching the ball.
It’s all for the team. You don’t have to mean it or anything.

Grote is a good looking guy, I guess I could manage that if its going to help. You know Kelvin Castro is married and has a little girl, the girl screamed through the whole game I dont know how he kept his focus.
Thanks for the Quintana update, TY. He’s slipped past the experts. I haven’t looked real close at the relievers in tampa. I need to check them out a little more. what does he throw?
TY, checking out the players to see who’s married is not my mission task. I’ll leave that up to you.
Granderson and Tex have more HRs than 4 entire teams.
I don’t know this person.
I think it will end at 94 or higher.
When you throw Cano in the mix those three have more than 13 teams and are only one behind the Phillies.
Toss Alex in there and account for all their players with greater than 10 HR and those 4 have more than 21 teams.
GB
haha the focus of that was that the girl screamed the whole game, not the married part.
Quintana is the one that I always hope comes out of the bullpen, he is our only lefty reliever. I was going to record him pitching but it was so hot and humid tonight I didnt feel like getting out of my seat. I am not sure what he throws but whatever it is must be working. Flannery and Whitley, along with Quintana are the best in the bullpen. Solbach is more of a long relief guy as is Ronny Marte. Francisco Gil is okay but nothing special. Claiborne has looked better lately but he is quite erratic still.
Marchand reporting that the Gordon era will officially begin tomorrow.
