God, another day of reading gripes about the lineup.

  2. blake June 16th, 2011 at 12:04 pm

If complaining means they’ll score 12 runs again……this lineup sucks! :)

  3. LGY June 16th, 2011 at 12:05 pm

    kate,

Very enjoyable. The weather was great.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to do any heckling :( Jones didn’t get any tough plays out in LF and Jeter wasn’t there last night!

The highlight was seeing Andruw put away his smile for a few seconds.

  4. willwill June 16th, 2011 at 12:05 pm

Split squad team plays another home game, i feel bad for the regulars. Hopefully that trip to port charlotte doesn’t “hurt anyone’s backs ” cough chavez…………………………

  5. Warning Track Power June 16th, 2011 at 12:05 pm

Not sure what to expect from this starter, Gordon.
As long as he’s not Flash Gordon, we might be ok, LOL!!!

With 6 consecutive games in NL parks(no DH opportunity), once again today is a great day to give ARod the day off.

  6. Bad Scooter June 16th, 2011 at 12:05 pm

Is this just a regular day off for Alex? DH yesterday and off today. I hope so.

  7. BoJo June 16th, 2011 at 12:05 pm

For luck–WHAT?!?! Is Girardi TRYING TO LOSE THIS GAME?!?!?!

  8. willwill June 16th, 2011 at 12:06 pm

Breaking news ….. Gordon throws up in the bullpen

  9. blake June 16th, 2011 at 12:06 pm

No Gardner again though…..seriously that’s my only gripe. If they don’t see him as an every day player then they need to change directions this winter and get somebody they do.

  10. timmyb72 June 16th, 2011 at 12:06 pm

A-rod was used as a DH last night, now he’s not in the lineup at all, and was a DH another time last week, should we as fans be concerned?

I’m guessing they are playing Posada over Gardner because Po won’t be seeing much action in the coming days.

  13. blake June 16th, 2011 at 12:08 pm

    Possible.

I think it was Torre that did the same thing against the Twins yrs ago. If it’s one thing fans hate is the manager giving the game away. :)

I wasn’t referring to you at all…you generally have valid points.

Sure, but why Jones over Gardner?

  17. LGY June 16th, 2011 at 12:11 pm

“Sure, but why Jones over Gardner?”

    ———————-

Because we brought Jones in to hit lefties.

  18. Warning Track Power June 16th, 2011 at 12:12 pm

    LGY-
    Very possible.
The difference between Girardi and the fans who post here, Girardi can see three or four steps ahead.

A-rod was used as a DH last night, now he’s not in the lineup at all, and was a DH another time last week, should we as fans be concerned?

Go look at A-Rods numbers against Wilson.

    willwill.

    lol

  21. Crawdaddy June 16th, 2011 at 12:12 pm

“Sure, but why Jones over Gardner?”

Because they signed him to bat against tought lefty pitchers.

  22. Niblick June 16th, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Gardner is really on Girardi’s $%!& list, isn’t he? Must be the 3 extra base hits in his last start, or the 1.160 OPS over the last 11 games. Gotta sit him, since he’s slumping so badly.

Hope Noesi is rested up to go 8 innings in relief of this meatball outfielder who’s starting today.

  23. LGY June 16th, 2011 at 12:14 pm

I’m assuming that when the Yanks signed Jones they figured he would give both Gardner and Granderson a break vs LHP, so neither of them would be in a strict platoon.

Granderson mashing LHP has resulted in killing Gardner’s PT vs lefties.

  24. Irreverent Discourse June 16th, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Niblick – How many of those hits Gardner has gotten in the last 11 games were against a LHP?

  25. Carlos June 16th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

    Where has SJ44 been?

Haven’t seen him since his Heat got beat by the Mavs.

  26. Tom in N.J. June 16th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

The only plausible explanation for Alex being out is his .077 BA vs Wilson (13 ABs).

  27. BoJo June 16th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

“Sure, but why Jones over Gardner?”

How can you say NO to that smile?

  28. Rich in NJ June 16th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Gardner should play almost everyday. If that’s a gripe, it’s loud and proud.

  29. munson15 June 16th, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Happy Birthday Erin!! You are one of the most level headed posters on here. Hope you have a great day.

  32. JWeav June 16th, 2011 at 12:17 pm

This is from BaseballHQ writer Jeremy T Deloney

    Brian Gordon (RHP, NYY)
After opting out of his minor league deal with the Phillies, the 32-year-old was quickly scooped up by the Yankees – he’ll make a spot start on Thursday, June 16. Gordon was originally an outfielder, but converted to a pitcher in ’07. He reached the majors with the Rangers in ’08. The Yankees are his sixth organization and he’s found recent success with the development of a cutter. Gordon has generally pitched out of the bullpen, but has the stamina and durability to start. He has a clean delivery and excellent command of a four pitch arsenal. He precisely locates his fastball and comands his secondary pitches well. He has rather ordinary stuff and can be hittable. Gordon has a career 3.09 ERA, 2.1 Ctl, and 7.7 Dom in the minors.
    STATS: Lehigh Valley (AAA) – 12 g, 9 gs, 5-0 1.14 ERA, 55.1 IP, 8.0 Cmd, 1.1 Ctl, 9.1 Dom, 4 HR, .197 oppBA
    CURRENT ROLE: Spot starter
POTENTIAL: #5 starter / Long reliever
    RATING: 6D

  33. yankeefeminista June 16th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

We simply want Jones in vs. the lefty. 5-6-7 is slow slow slow. Especially with Martin running with a stiff back. At least we compensate with some speed at the bottom of the order with our lively kids, Eduardo and Jalapeno! Let’s hope Gordon is hitting his spots.

  34. Crawdaddy June 16th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

    Rich,

Being loud and proud doesn’t get Girardi’s attention.

  35. munson15 June 16th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Pretty nice to have Arod and Gardner coming off the bench though.

  36. willwill June 16th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Gardner is still trying to figure out why you don’t bunt with 2 strikes.

  37. Niblick June 16th, 2011 at 12:19 pm

ID – I don’t know, but his career splits against lefties and righties aren’t extreme at all.

And unlike smiling Andruw, he can actually play the field.

  38. Warning Track Power June 16th, 2011 at 12:19 pm

    Tom-
Great post. Those stats alone should sent ARod to the bench today.
Again, the perfect opportunity to give him a full day off prior to the 6 NL games beginning tomorrow

  39. blake June 16th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

So are they going to just sign a Jonesy or Kearnsy, or Thamesy every year to play LF vs LHP? Gardner isn’t that bad vs LHP….

They just said on the radio that Peter Gammons called Wrigley field a dump…..of course Fenway is state of the art though right….

  40. BoJo June 16th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

If it doesn’t set him back, it is a good move to have Martin catch the rookie…keep him calm and call a good game Russell!

No Gardner again though…..seriously that’s my only gripe. If they don’t see him as an every day player then they need to change directions this winter and get somebody they do.

    ////

Although his numbers against LHP in general aren’t abysmal (including a .352 career OBP in 277 PA & a .373 OBP last season), they probably don’t have much confidence in him hitting LHSP & they got Jones to do it.

They probably do not like this (vs. LH starters):

    .209 .336 .298 .634 in 277 career PA

    including 2011:

    .077 .265 .077 .342 in 35 PA

    & his “breakout” year, 2010:

    .197 .335 .288 .623 in 164 PA

(while the stats vs. LHSP account for an entire game started by a LHP, including substitutions that may or may not be LH, they do tell an understory on how he really has competed against tougher lefties).

From what I can find, Martin has never been on the DL for his back before. It was mentioned earlier that he injured it lifting weights working out after a game. Over use sounds a lot less serious than real back problems. Hopefully he is fine today.

  53. Captain Clutch June 16th, 2011 at 12:28 pm

I definitely think that something is going on with Arod and he isn’t healthy. He just DHed the other day and yesterday and now he needs another day off?! You don’t sit someone like him for matchups. Something is going on with his hip or legs. On espn they showed the replay of him scoring from 2nd base yesterday and he wasn’t running well at all.

I thought that Granderson would get today’s game off not Gardner. Granderson has played basically everyday and I am sure his legs could use a day off before they play in the NL.

All Gammons really said was that the Cubs (specifically the Ricketts family) are fooling themselves if they think they can cheaply renovate Wrigley, and need to do more drastic things like were done in Fenway to keep the place useable.

I don’t care, they both deserve the wrecking ball if you ask me.

No errors from Nuney today. Need a lot of glove work as the ball is more than likely going to be put into play. Go Yanks.
