Tonight’s game has been rained out. Two games tomorrow, 12:35 and 7:10.

UPDATE, 5:38 p.m.: Freddy Garcia will start the first game, Brian Gordon will start the second. Joe Girardi said there’s no chance Russell Martin will play both games, and chances are Alex Rodriguez will skip one of the games as well.

Red Sox fans drooled all over Adrian Gonzalez for quite some time and then they acquired him. Sometimes slobbering is a necessary evil, like BO or flatulence.

    ————

The difference between the two is that the Yanks just signed their shortstop last offseason. You may have heard of him. He’s also their team captain and face of the franchise.

Also, neither Jeter nor Reyes is going to want to be a DH.

  6. Jerkface June 21st, 2011 at 5:28 pm

The worst result. One of those lineups is going to be gnarly.

Indeed. More often than not, it’s the late game lineup that’s the gnarlier of the two.

  8. Crawdaddy June 21st, 2011 at 5:31 pm

I would think Martin and Arod play in the first game and sit the second one.

It was 94 degrees today in NW Indiana and Ohio tends to get our weather the next day.

    lol.

    Girardi is such a joke.

  12. SoS June 21st, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Reyes reminds me of Crawford. Love the speed, not much power, have had leg injuries that make me question investing in them long term. Reyes is having a career year. Coincidentally its in his contract year. Did not hit 300 in his previous 4 years.

  13. MTU June 21st, 2011 at 5:35 pm

The day night DH’er almost guarantees another series win.

    Most DH’ers are split.

Unless you thought the Yanks were gonna sweep it’s actually good news.

They have a day off Thurs. (hopefully).

  14. G. Love June 21st, 2011 at 5:35 pm

And that’s why Girardi and the Yankees prove that they don’t care about winning, don’t care about the best offensive product they can put it and only care about Jeter’s ego and legend.

Paul O’neil just said on the radio that Jeter could accept a demotion to the 2 spot, but to the 7 spot or lower would be a problem. For a guy with no power left in his game, Jeter holds an awful lot of power.

  15. Crawdaddy June 21st, 2011 at 5:35 pm

The joke is if you thought Jeter wasn’t going to lead off while chasing 3000.

Folks its the same situation that they had with Posada last year. They couldnt pull him from being the catcher midseason. So they waiting until the offseason to plant the seed and move another direction. It will of course be Cashman being the bad guy this offseason and go public in a comment about Jeter being dropped in the lineup.

  23. pat June 21st, 2011 at 5:47 pm

“but to the 7 spot or lower would be a problem.”

    A problem for who?

  24. Ed H. June 21st, 2011 at 5:50 pm

If you did a confidential poll of Yankee players on the 25, I wonder how many would say that Jeter should be hitting 7th or lower.

  25. hardwired7 June 21st, 2011 at 5:56 pm

Freddy Garcia and Brian Gordon starting for the Yanks in late-June. Raise your hand if you called that one last December.

    *crickets*

For all the hand wringing and angst the game seems to generate , in the it really boils down to the ancillary players exceeding expectations.

  26. Warning Track Power June 21st, 2011 at 5:58 pm

the weather is so unkind today.
playing 2 tomorrow really tests the Yankees bench and pen.
unlikely either starter tomorrow has the ability to go more than 7 innings.
hopefully none of them is shelled early or has to leave the game before the 3rd or 4th inning.

ARod has to get one of the games off. no chance he can play both.
    same goes for Martin.

  27. RSM June 21st, 2011 at 6:01 pm

It’s a dead horse we are beating.
Yes, Girardi should move Jeter to the bottom of the line up.
    Will he?……No.
Frankly, Cashman should have let Jeter walk at the end of last season.
Jeter’s “legacy” will be an albatross this entire contract.
Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed watching cheaters for the last decade and a half

  28. RSM June 21st, 2011 at 6:03 pm

    Darn auto correct:
    Jeter….not cheaters

  29. Warning Track Power June 21st, 2011 at 6:06 pm

RSM-Like you, I have also enjoyed watching Jeter for the past 16+ yrs.
That being said, we have to take the good with the bad
All those WS titles have led to this=Jeter getting a pass on this team because of his legacy and everything he has down for the Yankees organization.
Jeter is a unique player. A player that comes along once in a lifetime.

Listen, once Jeter is moved down the line-up, the relationship between him and the Yankees has nowhere to go but down.
    The end is never kind.

Did Mickey ever get dropped to the bottom third of the lineup?
Ruth? Dimaggio etc.? If so, how many years before they retired? Im interested in knowing
if the Yankees ever did it to one of their legends.

Mantle played 144 games in each of his final 2 seasons.
    He hit 245 & 237
I can’t say where he hit in the line-up. Someone else would have to answer that.
Chad-This topic would make for a great column.

Those guys kicked ass. Jeter isn’t Dimaggio, Mantle, or Ruth. Ruth’s last year on the yankees he hit .288 .448 .537 .985. Mantle hit .237 .385 .398 .782 which I would take from Jeter right now! And that was the highest OPS on the team! 142 OPS+! Dimaggio hit .263 .365 .422 .787 in his last year and continued to bat 4th but only for 100 games

Any idea of where Mantle and Ruth batted in the lineup?

3rd. They didn’t get dropped because they were the best hitters on the team.

  39. RS June 21st, 2011 at 6:23 pm

Moving Jeter down in the lineup isn’t just about his underperformance, but the overperformance of guys like Granderson and Gardner.

If Granderson was having a 2010 season or Gardner was still hitting .220, it would be easy to keep Jeter right where he is regardless of his own numbers. But you have a .290 hitter with 50 SB potential and a #2 hitter leading baseball in HR and runs scored. At what point does it become ridiculous not to keep that tandem together?

  40. Jerkface June 21st, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Dimaggio is probably the only case where a player wasn’t replaced when there were viable alternatives, but Dimag was batting 4th that year and he was the 5th best batter on the team so the 5 best batters still hit 1-5. And he only played 100 games. Jeter might be the WORST hitter on the team.

  41. Warning Track Power June 21st, 2011 at 6:25 pm

    RS-
    Let’s take a breathe.
I agree that Jeter does not “deserve” to bat leadoff or #2. I also concede that both Gardner and Grandy are superior hitters this year to Jeter.

    But, let’s keep it real.
Right now Gardner does not have 50 SB potential. He has a lot to learn and IMO, I have much more faith in Nunez or Rickey Henderson’s ability to steal a base over Gardner.

  42. LGY June 21st, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Not for nothing, the weather for Wednesday doesn’t look so great either. Weather.com has been wrong a lot lately, but I’m just sayin’.

  44. SoS June 21st, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Does the media being a big part of these current times have anything to do with the front office not wanting to ruffle Jetes feathers? Jeter being the poster child of baseball and all. The media might jump all over the organizition and they in turn get alot of back lash from fans?

  45. Warning Track Power June 21st, 2011 at 6:31 pm

    SoS
From a PR standpoint, The Yankees are clearly at a disadvantage.
Batting him lead-off, even though his performance has been average at best does not
    look good.
Sending him down to hit 7th or worse will also cause a firestorm that has never been seen
on ESPN Baseball Tonight, ESPN News, etc….

  46. Laura - I Bleed Blue June 21st, 2011 at 6:32 pm

You people are nuts. After the media storm that happened with Posada-Gate, the Yankees aren’t going down that road again anytime soon. Jeter is leading off for the immediate future. I don’t care how many groundouts or DPs he hits into. Jeter moving down in the order ain’t happening!

  47. RS June 21st, 2011 at 6:36 pm

“Right now Gardner does not have 50 SB potential.”

Why not? He had 47 steals last year. And the word “potential” does imply that he has things to learn. At the very least, Gardner being on base at distracts a defense far more than Jeter being on base.

My only argument for keeping Jeter in the leadoff spot is that he has done a much better job reaching base with the bases empty this year than with runners on base. However, if you think about it, that’s not really much of a positive.

  48. Tom in N.J. June 21st, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Jeter’s a great Yankee; but he’s no longer an elite hitter. It happens.

  49. LockDown June 21st, 2011 at 6:38 pm

The majority of the media’s (sports networks, even YES, reporters etc) opinion is that gardner is a better lead off & that granderson should stay in the 2-spot, with Jeter moving down the lineup.

Keeping Jeter at leadoff after his 3000 is sending the message that Jeter is above the good of the team. The media will ride this over and over again throughout the season. Every game he leads off will stir the deabte.

If the yankees move Jeter down the lineup, it will be big news for a bit and eventually die down. He’s the team captain & will be hailed as a team player for paving the way to the future.

The sooner the move is done, the quicker the “Elephant” is out of the room.

  50. RS June 21st, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I kind of expect Jeter to finish the year batting leadoff, but can this really go on for the next THREE years? I can just picture Jeter with graying hair, batting .220 with 0 XBH, and Girardi saying sternly, “he’s our leadoff guy” lol

  51. 86w183 June 21st, 2011 at 6:40 pm

Actually returning him to second would make the most sense. Gardner leads off with instructions to run or they can hit and run a lot with Jeter.

The Yanks signing of Jeter was a lot of about lifetime achievement, true but it’s also how you treat people. It would be tough to go free agent shopping or retaining top guys if they saw the ultimate Yankee tossed aside late in his career.

Think of it as an investment in future talent procurement/retention

  55. SoS June 21st, 2011 at 6:57 pm

“Paul O’neil just said on the radio that Jeter could accept a demotion to the 2 spot, but to the 7 spot or lower would be a problem.”

    ————————————————————————————————-

Why would moving him to the 2 spot be considered a “demotion”? He played most of his career there. If anything, he was “demoted” to leadoff because of his tendency to hit into double plays and Damon’s tendency not to.

Would moving him to the 3 or 4 spot be considered a “demotion”?

Regardless, “demoting” him to #2 doesn’t help the line-up because that means moving Granderson out of it and giving him less at bats.

That is a mighty fine looking razor though…I wonder if it comes with a toothbrush, comb, and brush set…maybe nail clippers too.

    Gardner
    Grandy
    Tex
    Arod
    Cano
    Posada
    Jeter
    Swisher
    Martin

They could do that vs RHP if he continues to struggle after he comes back.

  96. CalYank June 21st, 2011 at 7:31 pm

I for one hope when Jeter comes back that they bat him seventh in the order. Gardner is hot now and should remain in the leadoff spot until that changes drastically. It doesn’t matter where Jeter hits in the order when he gets # 3,000 and the seven spot fits his lack of production up until he was injured.

Sounds like FB command again, and this dude has Betances throwing 5 or 6 sliders? Not. But he must have thrown 30 pitches. Not good.

MTU, wouldn’t be so bad if I could see the proceedings. Pretty sure for instance that these guys are calling his change a slider (which he doesn’t throw). Started off with a dink hit over Pirela’s head & then missing inside a couple times to walk the No. 2 guy (after dink hit guy stole second).

I know! This Portland crew does look over pitches well. Last time I saw Dellin he had two rocky innings & then like that, shut it down. Threw way too many pitches, though, but good that once he finds it he doesn’t re-open the door. That’s been consistent for him.

Heh, that’s your bud, right? They are hurting though with Romine & Mesa down, though Romine I think is due back shortly. They can use the power, ty.

BTW, really appreciate your Tampa news. I know it’s tough to get any sort of response from the Jeter bashing focused group that lives in here, but I notice and I like ;).

He’s not been promoted. Trenton at Portland tonight with Betances starting. His throwing has improved, he had a relapse tonight. Other aspects of fielding, reacting to the ball, athleticism, etc. hav always been very good. It’s being too strong on his throws that has hurt him.

  112. GreenBeret7 June 21st, 2011 at 7:45 pm

YankeeFem, you have just missed the oddest inning any pitcher could ever have. David Phelps just gave up 7 straight hits to open the 2nd inning. He didn’t retire a batter and only 4 runs scored and nobody left on base. One runner thrown out trying to take an extra base, and Phelps picked off two runners.
