No A-Rod, No Teixeira, No Martin, No problem

With three regulars out of the starting lineup, the Yankees managed a 4-2 win in the first game of today’s doubleheader against the Reds. Jorge Posada replaced Mark Teixeira at first base and hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth inning. Freddy Garcia was terrific through seven innings, allowing just three hits and two unearned runs for his sixth win of the season. Robinson Cano was the only everyday middle-of-the-order hitter in the lineup, and he went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

    Good win!

  2. munson15 June 22nd, 2011 at 3:25 pm

If all goes right, we could be sitting in first place in the morning.

  3. LGY June 22nd, 2011 at 3:25 pm

    Nice win! Take two.

Yay Chief and Po! Ramiro oh no :(

    Go Padres!

Hughes will move from Staten Island to Trenton after his successful first start. It was actually more than successful, with one Yanks official calling it “blow out, perfect, everything we wanted.” The velocity is the key, with many watching to see if he looks good in his side session, proof that he’s fine on normal rest and not just with several weeks of rest. Hughes will likely make at least two more starts, one at AA Trenton and another at AAA Scranton, before coming back to the Bronx. The Yankees are focused on his recovery as much as velocity, so don’t get too excited about radar readings.

NICE TRY GIRARDI… thinking you could lose this game on purpose with such a terrible lineup.

    THEY SHOWED YOU.

  6. munson15 June 22nd, 2011 at 3:27 pm

The pitching so far this year has been outstanding.

  7. LGY June 22nd, 2011 at 3:27 pm

    Oh and Yay Gritner!

  8. blake June 22nd, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Bonus win….rested a bunch of guys and still won. Now.go for the sweep tonight having the series already won. Great job Yanks….great job Chief.

  9. luis June 22nd, 2011 at 3:28 pm

good game all, see ya tonight

Keith Law and Dave Schoenfield discuss many things – including Yankees prospect and first round draft pick (in 2010) Cito Culver

    http://espn.go.com/espnradio/p.....autoplay=1

They start taking about Culver at the 25:45 mark (cause who wants to listen to Law rant for 30 minutes?). Basically
    - Culver isn’t that great
    - Can’t hit from the left side (used the words “ugly hack” to describe his LH swing)
    - Should just be a RH hitter
    - Won’t stick at SS and should move to 2nd
    - no arm in the hole
    - stop switchhitting and see more pitches as a RH hitter

    - and he smells. (kidding on that one).

  11. Jerkface June 22nd, 2011 at 3:28 pm

Yankees are dominant this year against everyone except the Red Sox I guess. They are piling up series wins.

  12. jpb173 June 22nd, 2011 at 3:29 pm

The two runs that Freddie Garcia gave up were unearned so his ERA for the season is down to 3.30. That aint bad for a low salary castoff. Lets hope that Bartolo Colon can return soon and continue the fine season that he was having.

  13. blake June 22nd, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Braves pounding the Jays and Sox behind the Padres in a rain delay.

  14. Mgumpher June 22nd, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Nice win, but with Robertson and Mo pitching to close out the game, they probably won’t be pitching tonight. I guess we can hope that the Yankees score early and often to make it a bulletproof game.

  15. Erin June 22nd, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Sounds like it was a good game!!

I guess I shouldn’t complain about being at work during games-I think my record is something like 5-1 this year. ;)

  16. Mell June 22nd, 2011 at 3:32 pm

Just saw on Twitter that Sam Borden is a victim of the latest cuts by Gannett. Unfortunate news indeed, but best wishes to Sam in his future endeavors.

  17. blake June 22nd, 2011 at 3:33 pm

D Robs ERA is getting closer to dipping below 1. He just doesn’t get hit much…..if runners get on base against him its usually because he walks them.

  18. LGY June 22nd, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Robertson was the right choice in the 8th.

You can’t risk blowing this game with a Gordon-Cueto matchup on tap.

Plus it can’t feel good going into tonight after blowing a game. You lock this one up and go into tonight feeling good and hoping to sweep.

How do we figure out which date Hughes will pitch in Scranton? I wanna go.

  21. Doc Iac June 22nd, 2011 at 3:35 pm

a chance to sweep the day night double header and the seris…

half the readers hear wanted tx and arod and martin in this game and concide the 2nd game to their best starter with the fill ins,

instead giradi wants to face their best with our best instead of give in,

hence why i like giradi as manager and not some of u blokes

  22. LGY June 22nd, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Gritner is so nasty in LF. It’s so fun watching him out there.

Brian Heyman’s continued employment and Sam Borden being cut is a travesty, but I imagine it has more to do with salary than quality.

May I just say that I love Gritner SO much more than GGBG. :)

  27. Mell June 22nd, 2011 at 3:37 pm

Robertson was the right choice in the 8th.

    ====================

Agreed. Win counts the same no matter who pitches the 8th. No need to push their luck with Garcia, who gave Joe G all he could ask for already.

  28. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2011 at 3:37 pm

“Yankees are dominant this year against everyone except the Red Sox I guess.”

Yes, but those are the only games that matter and, furthermore, what matters most in those games is how Brett Gardner does.

    Therefore, non sequitur about Melky.

  29. LGY June 22nd, 2011 at 3:38 pm

One thing I noticed about DRob is they try to call for him to elevate a fastball a lot but then HR throws in right down the middle.

Somehow though the batter never hits it.

Does he have trouble elevating because of his ARM action or is it anyway by design because the batter feels the catcher setting up high?

  30. Erin June 22nd, 2011 at 3:38 pm

Ledger_Yankees Robertson out for G2. Mo may be available. Cano gonna sit.

  31. LGY June 22nd, 2011 at 3:38 pm

No D-rob? No Cano? Is Girardi trying to lose this game?

  34. ron June 22nd, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Hughes is pitching this friday in new britian,ct.

  35. LGY June 22nd, 2011 at 3:41 pm

He is trying to lose this beauty pagent!

  37. Erin June 22nd, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Ledger_Yankees Girardi calls it an uncharacteristic day for Pena; would play him again.

Larry Rothschild must be some kind of genius

  39. ron June 22nd, 2011 at 3:42 pm

I looked into getting tickets & might go watch hughes pitch.

$ 18.00 for mvp seats, wich according to the web site, are the best seats available.

Sam’s tweets from about a half hour ago:

SamBorden Thanks to all who have gotten in touch. My job was among the Gannett cuts made yesterday. I’m certainly not done with sports writing (cont)

SamBorden and I’ll definitely be looking for some new avenues to bore you with West Wing references and the like in the future.

SamBorden I have a feeling I’ll be around ballparks again sooner than later. In the meantime, it seems Twitter require full-time employment, so …..

  41. UnKnown June 22nd, 2011 at 3:43 pm

    What happened to Sam?

  42. Tom in N.J. June 22nd, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Bearded Lackey’s the ugliest Lackey of them all.

  43. West Coast Yankee Fan June 22nd, 2011 at 3:44 pm

That is a shame about Sam Borden. In 2010, Gannett had revenues of $5.44 billion dollars and a net income of $588 million.

Greedy corporate jerks. I wonder when people are going to wake up and realize who the enemy really is in this country.

  44. MaineYankee June 22nd, 2011 at 3:44 pm

I can’t believe Joe didn’t bring in Logan for a 2 inning save so he had D Rob and Mo for the second game!!!!!!

  45. MaineYankee June 22nd, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Probably Pete Abe will get Sam a job with the Globe.

  46. Bo knows June 22nd, 2011 at 3:48 pm

You have to love Girardi for his careful handling of Garcia. Got seven strong innings from Garcia on ninety pitches, save the arm for the next game. No strain, to prove something. Girardi’s handling of Garcia speaks for itself, 3.3 era.

  47. bruceb June 22nd, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Wow. When you’re hot, you’re hot. Seems the Yanks can win with any lineup Joe throws out there right now. I must admit, I had my doubts, but I’ve been wrong so many times now, what’s the point in complaining. Cueto will be the toughest of the three Reds pitchers we have faced tonight – providing his neck is ok – but I won’t be betting against us making it five wins on the bounce, with or without Robby.

It’s happening everywhere, particularly in newspapers and my industry – advertising. We’ve had 140 layoffs at my company in the last year due to losing two big clients. I hate to say it but there’s no sign of the recession ending right now.

  50. Bo knows June 22nd, 2011 at 3:52 pm

That coaching troika of Girardi, Pena and Rothschild are state of the art. A lot of experience at handling pitchers. Robertson for example, has taken a step up under the tutelage of Rothschild.

  51. West Coast Yankee Fan June 22nd, 2011 at 3:55 pm

I hope your job is safe bruceb. The corporations are flush with cash and profits almost across the board.

  52. DocTodd June 22nd, 2011 at 3:56 pm

  55. tomingeorgia June 22nd, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Gannett makes it profit in broadcasting, not newspapers any more. Sorry about Sam.

  64. Erin June 22nd, 2011 at 4:02 pm

Ledger_Yankees Pena can’t remember having a three error game ever in his life; little leagues, minor leagues, mexican league. Girardi has him back @ 2b

  65. AZ88 June 22nd, 2011 at 4:03 pm

    Gordon for 6 innings
    Logan/Ayala for 7th and 8th
    Wade to close it out

  68. SoS June 22nd, 2011 at 4:06 pm

With all the hate on Girardi. If Cleveland falls off the map. Can you see him winning coach of the year with all the injuries this team has sustained?

  69. tomingeorgia June 22nd, 2011 at 4:07 pm

    5-0 SD, now.

  70. BIG AL June 22nd, 2011 at 4:07 pm

All those doubters that said this was the worst line-up in Yankees history etc., when will you learn to have faith in your team.

Take away the 2 unearned runs, and they way Freddie was pitching, this game was a laugher.

Anyone still think the NL can compare to the AL overall? This is why you have to be very careful in looking at NL SP, they may not translate well to the AL East.
