I’m looking forward to seeing Ubaldo to see what the heck happened to him since last year.

  4. MTU June 24th, 2011 at 9:11 am

    Bojo-

You don’t want to see good Ubaldo. Believe me.

    :)

  5. BoJo June 24th, 2011 at 9:13 am

    MTU–

What hapened to him since last year? I can’t believe his line this year….

  6. upstate kate June 24th, 2011 at 9:13 am

well on paper (or more accurately on computer screen) they look like good match ups

  7. Erin June 24th, 2011 at 9:13 am

Why was I thinking tomorrow’s game was a night game? Oh well, I guess I’ll just listen to John and Suzyn while I’m out and about. ;)

  8. BoJo June 24th, 2011 at 9:14 am

BTW–I could envision Rockies making a play for Erik Bedard if Seattle truly is interested in selling.

  9. 86w183 June 24th, 2011 at 9:15 am

Brackman got lit up against last night, 2/3 of an inning, 3 ER

Erin — if you just listen to those two you’ll never know what happened on the field

    Bojo-

    Not sure.

Innings overhang perhaps ? He always has had a long, funky type of delivery.

The kind that can easily get out of whack.

Velocity has also been down a bit I think.

maybe these things are related. Don’t know for sure.

Whatever the cause you have to hope he doesn’t have his best stuff when he faces us because if he does it’s gonna be a really long night.

  12. 86w183 June 24th, 2011 at 9:16 am

Seattle is just 2 1/2 games back in a weak division. Don’t see why they’d be “sellers” anytime soon.

  13. MTU June 24th, 2011 at 9:17 am

    Bojo-

The Rox are rumored to be looking for pitching help. You might be right.

Probably right about innings…When I saw him early last year, I thought he was one of the best I’ve seen in years…doesn’t look anything like that now.

Goes to show how too many innings at too young an age can really damage a pitcher.

  17. 86w183 June 24th, 2011 at 9:19 am

    Blake-

A lot of big guys have a hard time repeating their deliveries and mature late because of it.

  27. pat June 24th, 2011 at 9:31 am

We were out last weekend and put on the game in the car to check the score. After an inning I checked it on my phone because they hadn’t said it yet.

It does seem sometimes they forget people on the radio can’t see what’s happening and they need to tell us.

  28. BoJo June 24th, 2011 at 9:32 am

Off to work–have a great day folks!

  29. 86w183 June 24th, 2011 at 9:32 am

That’s why you don’t invest more than $ 1 Million in them while they are awaiting major surgery.

  30. MTU June 24th, 2011 at 9:34 am

    86-

The Yankees can afford to take those types of chances.

High risk/High reward. That’s one of the ways to gamble on high-end talent.

They blew 40 Mil on “Sunglasses” and didn’t even miss a beat.

  31. 86w183 June 24th, 2011 at 9:40 am

    MTU —

  33. 86w183 June 24th, 2011 at 9:45 am

I said it at the time, not that I can prove it. The guy wasn’t all that good at NC State, 3.81 ERA as a junior and it was known he needed TJ surgery.

It never makes sense to sign someone for million$$$ PRE-surgery.

  34. MTU June 24th, 2011 at 9:47 am

    86-

TJ yields such good results these days, and Brackman was very highly thought of that I can’t blame the Yanks for going for it.

Perhaps they should hire you to scout for them.

    :)

  35. MTU June 24th, 2011 at 9:49 am

    edit: so that. apologies.

  36. ron June 24th, 2011 at 9:52 am

I’ve always found it fascinating how one offseason can completely change a player.

Take Derek Jeter, for example. In 2009, he was the engine of a Yankees team that won 103 games in the regular season and a World Series title. He batted .334, had 212 hits, 18 homers, 107 runs, and a .406 on-base percentage. Then he disappeared for a few months, broke ground on St. Jetersburg, shot a couple of Ford commercials, and (probably) hung out a lot with Minka Kelly in a bikini.

The captain came back in April, just five months after finishing third in MVP voting and still 35 years old, and was never close to the same player again. Did his offseason workout schedule change? Unlikely, given what we know about him. Did he suffer a physical setback? Not that we heard of, and given the hyper-kinetic nature of today’s media, it’s unlikely it could’ve been hidden.

All signs point back to one undeniable truth: Derek Jeter got old.

  39. blake June 24th, 2011 at 9:54 am

I saw Brackman pitch live at NC State…..anyone who saw him standing out there would have gambled on him. Some gambles pay off (Josh Hamilton in the Rule 5) and some don’t.

  40. ron June 24th, 2011 at 9:54 am

This year, arod’s body seems to be in the midst of a measured breakdown, following a trajectory not unlike my 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity (R.I.P.). He suffered an oblique injury in April that took him weeks to bounce back from. He’s had an issue with his non-surgically repaired hip and this week we learned about a banged up left shoulder that both he and the Yankees tried to keep quiet.

A-Rod’s maladies have started to manifest right on your TV. Once a 40/40 talent, Rodriguez now runs like a lumbering power hitter. Watching him round the bases makes me cringe — I feel like every step is groin pull, hip twinge or Chien-Ming-Wang-foot-explosion waiting to happen.

Rodriguez turns 36 next month, so this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. That he’s signed through his 42nd birthday is a surprise, no matter how many times I remind myself (thanks Hank!).
The good news in all of this? Rodriguez is still a productive player and a worthy cleanup hitter despite his advanced age. His contract will never be viewed as anything but a disaster, but as long as the slow burn isn’t overtaken by the cliff dive, the Yankees will survive.

I doubt Jeter was in a bikini when he was hanging out with Minka!

  42. Erin June 24th, 2011 at 9:57 am

ron-, that’s funny-I was just talking about that with somebody last weekend. How did he go from finishing 3rd in the MVP voting to having the worst season of his career? I guess his age caught up to him in a hurry. :?

  43. GreenBeret7 June 24th, 2011 at 9:57 am

Really encouraging numbers on Jairo Heredia, and numbers that may entice interest for teams to ask for Corbin Joseph.

    jnorris427 Josh Norris
    Corban Joseph’s last 10 games: .415/.489/.683/1.172, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 6 BB, 5 SO #yankees

    Jairo Heredia’s last six starts: 38 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 7 BB, 43 strikeouts

  44. MTU June 24th, 2011 at 10:00 am

    GB-

    Both looking good.

Can’t believe giambi is 41 yrs old in jan.

  48. blake June 24th, 2011 at 10:04 am

I think Jeter was hurt last year and was in a major funk mechanically for a good portion of the season……its a lot harder to get back on track at 36 than it is 26. The difference between being able to hit .320 and. 260 in the big leagues is so subtle. I think a lot of great players decline is triggered by some nagging injury that throws them off and then that overlaps with physical decline…..and it snow balls from there.

Alex’s swing is much more adaptable to the aging process than Jeter’s is……its more fundamental and he’s always tinkered with it. Jeter’s unconventional approach has worked very well for him but its required his great ability to work…..he’s just in the process of trying to reinvent it to work with his reduced skill set……Im still hopeful he will find a way

  49. Hassey June 24th, 2011 at 10:06 am

Giambi should get a huge ovation – hard to believe it’s almost 10 years ago since that signing.

There is no reason that we shouldn’t absolutely destroy their starters all 3 games

  50. GreenBeret7 June 24th, 2011 at 10:07 am

MTU, Heredia was supposed to be the next big hope from the Dominican. Big arm/stuff. injuries and ineffectiveness over the last few years made him a Horne, Garcia, Norton candidate. started out slow this year and then really came on. Yanks signed him in 2007 and he’s still just 21 years old. Has all of the pitches.

    Morning, Joe.

Hope all is well with you at the body repair shop. haven’t heard the extent of Norton’s ionjuries, but, what a great season he was having. He’s had as little luck as Gil Patterson and al Leiter had in their early careers.

Things are ok here, thanks. Am off this weekend, and mrs. joe and I are going to the game Saturday. Looking forward to 7-8 innings of CC, a few dingers by the guys, and another round of Enter Sandman. I’ll have a brew in your honor.

    GB,

As you are our resident expert on the minors(not self proclaimed but fellow blogger proclaimed), have you heard why Adams left the game the other day? Injury or just slowly breaking him in? Adams +/or Joseph would seem expendable with Cano on board.

Dave Adams BTW is still rehabbing but he’s how playing with the Tampa Yanks….He’ll probably be activated in the next 10days on the Trenton roster as it seems the Corbin Joseph is days away from being promoted to Scranton….

J.R. Morphy, Slade Heathcott and Rob Segedin were all promoted to Tampa from Charleston. The secondary benefit to these moves is that Gary Sanchez and Eduardo Sosa will now move into everyday roles with a chance to build on their recent hot streaks….Sanchez is hitting .350 over the last month.

If the yanks trade any of Phelps, Mitchell or Warren from the Scranton roster then Jairo Jeredia will most likely be promoted coinciding with Stoneburner coming off the DL as Dellin and Banny would almost certainly be promoted to AAA

  82. GreenBeret7 June 24th, 2011 at 11:02 am

    Mac,

Adams in two games, was hitting really well, but, his leg started giving him problems. Really a pity because he’s a good all around player. Little bit of power and some speed. hopefully, he gets back to where he was. I’m hoping they’re just going slow with him.

  83. Erin June 24th, 2011 at 11:04 am

    Mac,

with any luck, Adams gets it back, and he can become a Randy Velarde type and play 2nd, 3rd and the corner outfields. not sure that he can play short and center, but, I’d let him take a shot at those spots too. Mainly, he can hit.

I believe game 3 is being pitched bt rookie righty Juan Nicasio, who was roughed up for 6 runs in 4.2 innings by the Indians in his last outing.

If Francisco Rodriguez accepts a trade to a team using him as a set-up reliever he won’t reach the 55 games finished to get the 2012 vesting option of 17.5M.

Jeter unlikely to be back next Wednesday when he’s eligible to come off the DL. From todays NY Post:

“He is still feeling the calf,” general manager Brian Cashman said. “He is doing nothing but long-toss. He is getting better but not in position to do anything yet.”

Jeter, who will turn 37 on Sunday, played catch for the third straight day yesterday at the Yankees’ minor league complex in Tampa, but it’s what he hasn’t done that indicates he won’t be back in six days.

He hasn’t run straight ahead, never mind around the bases. Nor has he fielded ground balls or taken batting practice.”

    BIG AL-

I’m not clear if K-Rod would waive his option without an extension. From the NY Daily News:

The News reported last month that Rodriguez would consider waiving his 2012 option if the acquiring team was willing to offer him a multi-year deal. As a setup man for Mariano Rivera, however, he would not be finishing games, so the vesting option would not come into play.

Rodriguez’s deal also has a no-trade clause to 10 teams, but he did not seem to feel that was a big obstacle.

“Honestly I don’t even know what (teams) are on the no-trade clause, I haven’t even been asked about that yet,” Rodriguez said. “I mean I would definitely love to stay here, but I have to be open to every possibility out there right now.”

If the Mets want to deal Beltran to the Yankees for a reasonable price I’m 100% for that. Taking Randy Johnson over Beltran was a huge mistake. Plus getting him on the team now the Yankees could find out if he is open to a discounted / short term extension. That would free up Swisher for trade with his 1 year option and worst case they could rotate Beltran through the DH.

They’re not going to shed salary AND get a nice haul of prospects, thats not really how salary dumps work. I also don’t think I want the Yankees overpaying in that case. I hope they would deal in good faith with the Yankees.

  187. Irreverent Discourse June 24th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

I wouldn’t say anything he said about ARod was terribly disrespectful…

  188. Betsy June 24th, 2011 at 2:00 pm

He said some stuff in the SI article that was inappropriate…and I thought he got off scott free re: the steroids considering what Alex went through, but to be fair, Ortiz and everyone else got off scott free. Plus, I just didn’t care for him personally. I wouldn’t boo him by any means- he’s just not a guy I cared for when he was here.

  189. West Coast Yankee Fan June 24th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

Your typical attempt to nitpick words in a conversation. I never said a salary dump; I never said the Yankees would overpay. if they trade him and don’t have to pay him and get prospects I think they would Period.

If there is no significant starting pitching help and Cashman could pull it off, I think a Robertson, Soriano, K-Rod, Mo bullpen would be a major asset if they seriously want to have a shot at winning it all this year. It’s going to come down to beating Philly and their staff IMO and that pen would help a great deal.

  190. Betsy June 24th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

And, I’ll admit, Pete’s bipolar behavior towars Alex and Jason didn’t help

  201. Jerkface June 24th, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Isn’t a salary dump basically trading a player for a bag of balls or equivalent thereof?

Yes, a salary dump is a trade where a player thats owed a lot of money is traded for below normal value because the trading team doesn’t pay any of the salary. Abreu was a salary dump.

Beltran is good enough to command a decent prospect, but I think if the Yankees took all of his salary they ought to pay with less good prospects.

The point I was responding to from another poster was about acquiring Beltran in a salary dump. I think WCYF thought it was about K-rod or something, either way the Yankees should not be offering a nice haul of prospects, because they are doing their crosstown brothers the kindness of eating all that salary. Especially on K-Rod and his ridiculous option.

I said I assume the best as far as Maine’s dairy farm is concerned.

Much fur is processed by using cruel and inhumane practices, there is a great deal of proof of that. But it is wrong no matter how the animal is treated. Killing animals for fashion reasons is not acceptable.

    ***************

Leather is obtained from animals that are processed for food, to feed millions of people. Using all the animal is a good thing to do.

Old people do not die from a lack of fur coats. There are many other sources of warm clothing that are a fraction of the cost of fur. That is perhaps the stupidest analogy I have seen from you and that is really saying something.

The Red Sox have Lackey under contract through 2014. That means there could be a lot more days like this, or it is also possible that Lackey will somehow turn things around and prove to be worth the $82.5 million Boston will wind up paying him.

The most likely outcome is that he will be another free agent pitching bust, though.

With Theo Epstein as GM, Boston has been more reluctant to go long term, so the John Smoltzes and Brad Pennys have not been so costly. But given how much stock this Red Sox ownership puts in playing the percentages, and given how the percentages show that signing veteran starting pitchers to long-term contracts is a mistake, they have done it anyway.

Now, they have the likes of Lackey for another 3-1/2 years.

When it rains around Fenway, it pours money.
