Hey guy, I read the books so I think I know what I’m talking about, they are a direct continuation of the story. he originally wanted to do a 5 year time skip to age everyone up so it would make sense but he had to use too many flashbacks so it didn’t work. Thats why he had to right A Feast for Crows, which then turned out to be TOO BIG so he split it into 2 books. Dance with Dragons does occur simultaneously with AFFC, with characters not shown in the latter, but the timeline extends beyond it, and both happen right after Storm of Swords.
In a man bites dog moment…a MLB manager calls his boss into his office and tells him that if he isn’t going to extend his contract for next year, he’s not getting on the bus after the game.
Maybe I am a little old fashinoned, but I always had a exit strategy (read another job in hand) when I took that stance with any of my bosses during my career.
I mean there are only 30 MLB manager jobs available and most likely somewhere between 300+ people hoping to get the next vacancy.

They continue the story directly in both books, with half the characters appearing in AFFC including new ones and the other half appearing in ADWD including new characters. I have a cat!! I don’t know how much protection she’d give me though. She’s the female equivelant of Garfield-she’s too lazy to even chase birds or mice. LOL
The Red Sox have Lackey under contract through 2014. That means there could be a lot more days like this, or it is also possible that Lackey will somehow turn things around and prove to be worth the $82.5 million Boston will wind up paying him.
The most likely outcome is that he will be another free agent pitching bust, though.
With Theo Epstein as GM, Boston has been more reluctant to go long term, so the John Smoltzes and Brad Pennys have not been so costly. But given how much stock this Red Sox ownership puts in playing the percentages, and given how the percentages show that signing veteran starting pitchers to long-term contracts is a mistake, they have done it anyway.
Now, they have the likes of Lackey for another 3-1/2 years.

good news is in non-head to head matchups, yankees are better against everyone else than boston is.

Also, Pena had a winning record the year before for that crappy team.
He had something to stand on.
There’s an article in the NY Times about how the Yankees have been winning since Jeter went on the DL. I say that it has more to do with the opponents than his absence.
Riggleman probably didn’t handle things the right way, but we really don’t know the full story.
He might have decided that he has plenty to cover him through his golden years, and was tired of the garbage from the Nats.
I can see leaving a job when it become untenable. While it is better to have something lined up, I can fully understand leaving if, as a personal decision, you come to a point where enough is enough.

I think it has more to do with he is no longer a vital component to the team.
I’m sure Riggleman has plenty of friends in MLB so he’ll get another job in baseball. It might not be a managerial job, but he’ll coach for somebody in the near future.

****************************
I’m no riggleman apologist – i think what he did was f’d up (give up on the players who he had preached to them to give 100% every night)…but the key words above for him being a .440 manager is that “his teams have sucked” he’s been manager of the padres, cubs, mariners and the nationals – having sucky teams like that play 440 ball isn’t that bad…and 10 game winning streak or not he had the nationals playing 500 ball…the royals – who have better players are like 10 games under 500…..
he didn’t ask for an extension – just that his 2012 option be picked up…joe torre was a 471 winning % manager when the yankees gave him a chance and now he’s a managerial genius – sometimes if your teams suck there is nothing you can do but be a below 500 manager…he was looking out for next year and his boss ws giving him the run around
Do you believe he will play through his 4 year contract if he continues this rapid decline?
–
I think Jeter is the kind of guy that wouldnt quit and would think he could battle/fight through anything. But I thought he’d slightly improve on last year not get worse, so I don’t know what he will do. Now I am leaning towards he wont play out the entire contract.
The biggest thing I learned today is that Jerkface is an avid reader and can become confrontational when discussing literature. Other than that, its been a pretty fruitless day.

In Michigan it’s protected as the state animal and close to extinction, but, pound for pound the meanest thing on four legs. They’ll attack bears if they’re cornered. They’ll gnaw off a leg if caught in a trap, get into houses and cabins and rip food packages apart and vomit.

But how about ‘universilaterally’ ?
======
Really mel? Can you please leave my stage. (have to admit its a tad better than my univerlaterally)
Reminds me of Taladega Knights when Ricky Bobby best friend just stole his wife and he was mad at him but couldnt help but admit to like the name Magic Man.

this is a really good reason for me never to have kids.
Erin,
Buy a cat(its cheaper and easier to get your hands on). I heard Cats can protect you from snakes as well. You ever wonder why you never hear anyone say they have snake like reflexes?

I have a cat!! I don’t know how much protection she’d give me though. She’s the female equivelant of Garfield-she’s too lazy to even chase birds or mice. LOL
Speaking of cats–it’s time for a TAR update on the stray….
When it rains around Fenway, it pours money.
Erin,
When you become a mom. Make sure you dont embarrass your kids by doing this.

It’s time to make her earn her keep.

Oh, believe me, she’s not a vegetarian.
Cats might have decent reflexes but did you know that Donkeys and Mules are about the best to have to defend against big cats? Mountain lions won’t go near them.
Sometimes it just pays to be an *ss I guess. lol.

Talk about getting the silent treatment.
Riggle is a career .440 manager that had a team playing .440 baseball win 10 or 11 and thought he was “all that”. No one will ever hire a manager that walks out on his team in the middle of a season.
__
This is what made it so ridiculous. His teams, including the Nats have sucked. He goes on one good stretch and thinks he deserves something that even Torre couldn’t get from the Yankees? An extension?

Nice.
Luckily, there are no snakes where I live (or I wouldn’t be living where I do), so we’re good. lol
JF – To be fair Pena didn’t “quit” on them, he was getting physically ill from the stresses of managing a poor team, walked away with kind words and was offered a spot elsewher einthe roganization. He didn’t stomp away like a child.
Ill manage the Nats for free …..all I need is a copy of Girardi’s binder.
Yanks start the day a half game out… not bad for spotting the Sox 7 games in the head to head standings. If they simply play better those games, they will be in great shape.
__
good news is in non-head to head matchups, yankees are better against everyone else than boston is.

It has all to do with the benches clearing and Girardi getting medievil. That was better than any win one for the gipper speach.
I’m sure Riggleman has plenty of friends in MLB so he’ll get another job in baseball. It might not be a managerial job, but he’ll coach for somebody in the near future.
Their record is also better with a guy hitting .365 as the leadoff hitter, not a guy hitting .260.
How do we know he didnt already have a job lined up before he walked? Probably taking his time going there, not to make it look so obvious.

JF,
Do you believe he will play through his 4 year contract if he continues this rapid decline?

I think Jeter is the kind of guy that wouldnt quit and would think he could battle/fight through anything. But I thought he’d slightly improve on last year not get worse, so I don’t know what he will do. Now I am leaning towards he wont play out the entire contract.

I wonder if we’ll see Edwin “Ned” Stark again as a spirit/ghost? Game of Thrones is a terrrific series.
New Post w/pregame notes
The biggest thing I learned today is that Jerkface is an avid reader and can become confrontational when discussing literature. Other than that, its been a pretty fruitless day.

The first book had some flashbacks they could go to later down the line, one especially badass one with 7 northmen vs 3 kingsguard in the rebellion, and maybe some flashbacks later from his family, but no ghosts
His bones do appear at one point

GB7,
I went to the san diego zoo camping a couple years back for fathers day and they told us that the badger or was it the wolverine was the most dangerous animal there was. I believe its the one that kills snakes(sleeps off their venum). All I could think of is that they probably never watched the Lion King and should all be fired for miss representation.
———————————————————————————————————————-
Along with minks and ferrets, all part of the weasel family.
In Michigan it’s protected as the state animal and close to extinction, but, pound for pound the meanest thing on four legs. They’ll attack bears if they’re cornered. They’ll gnaw off a leg if caught in a trap, get into houses and cabins and rip food packages apart and vomit.
As far as snakes, not sure, although a mongoose will attack snake like cobras and kill them..
