TV/Time: YES/1:07
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 76 degrees
Umpires: Ed Rapuano HP, Brian O’Nora 1B, Alfonso Marquez 2B, Ed Hickox 3B

Day shift: The Yankees are the majors’ best day team, at 20-4. They’re batting .280 with 38 homers in the daylight.

A-Rod’s hot bat: Alex Rodriguez is batting .526 (10 for 19) with five RBI over his last five games and .391 (18 for 46) with two homers and 13 RBI over his last 13 games.

CC chasing 50: If CC Sabathia wins today, it will be his 50th victory in 85 starts as a Yankee. That would match Chien-Ming Wang as the fastest Yankees pitcher to reach 50 over the last 30 years.

Update, 1:12: Impressive top of the first for Sabathia, 1-2-3 with two Ks swinging on off-speed stuff, vs. Gonzalez and Helton.

Update, 1:15: Gardner shows his value as a leadoff batter, reaching on a perfect bunt single up the third-base line.

Update, 1:18: Gardner steals second, now let’s see if the Yankees capitalize. That’s just his 15th steal in 25 tries.

Update, 1:20: 1-0, Granderson cashes Gardner in with a single and moves to second because Eric Young doesn’t field it cleanly in right-center. Granderson has tied Teixeira for the team lead in RBI with 55.

Update, 1:26: A-Rod remains hot, his hitting streak now at six after his ground RBI single to right, 2-0.

Update, 1:37: One single allowed in the second by Sabathia, but two more strikeouts.

Update, 1:49: Gardner strands two with a two-out groundout in the second.

Update: 1:57: Sabathia gives up a walk in the third, but that’s it. So he has allowed just one hit and has five Ks so far, 2-0 Yankees heading for the last of the third.

Update, 2:02: Good start to the third for the Yankees. Curtis Granderson bloop single, Mark Teixeira double over Carlos Gonzalez’s head in center. Second and third, no outs.

Update, 2:05: A-Rod is making his plate appearances count, two-run double to the right-center gap. That’s three RBI today after driving in both Yankees runs last night. So it’s 4-0. That, by the way, gives him 50 RBI.

Update, 2:11: Nice headfirst slide into the plate by Rodriguez to score on Nick Swisher’s shallow fly to left-center. Ryan Spilborghs’ throw was just a little on the first-base side to help the cause. A-Rod just got his hand on the plate in time — 5-0.

Update, 2:20: That was an almost Jeter-like play in the hole by Nunez, backhand, turn/little jump (not as high as Jeter) and throw to second for the inning-ending force in the fourth. Tulowitzki has both hits off Sabathia so far.

Update, 2:30: Two singles to start the Yankees fourth, and they get nothing. Gardner hit into a double play and Granderson went down looking. Cervelli has two singles so far.

Update, 2:38: Excellent job by Sabathia to preserve his shutout after Ryan Spilborghs led off with a double and moved to third when Chris Nelson followed with a groundout. Matt Pagnozzi lifted a shallow fly to center. And Carlos Gonzalez bounced a 94 mph fastball back to Sabathia for the final out.

Update, 2:43: Cano hit into his second double play of the game after A-Rod drew a walk. So it’s 5-0 heading to the sixth.

Update, 2:48: Two singles to start the Colorado sixth.

Update, 2:52: Sabathia gets Tulowitzki to ground an off-speed pitch into a 5-4-3 double play.

Update, 2:54: Giambi strikes out, inning over.

Update, 3:00: RBI double for Jorge Posada, 6-0. He went the other way, to left-center. That’s his second hit of the game.

Update, 3:05: Cook is done with Posada on third and two outs. Lefty Rex Brothers is coming on.

Update, 3:13: Through six, the Yankees have six runs and 12 hits and the Rockies have no runs and five hits.

Update, 3:23: 1-2-3 seventh for Sabathia. Clayton Mortensen will take over the pitching for Colorado, and Jonathan Herrera has replaced Tulowitzki at short.

Update, 3:32: That’s three hits for Posada. The bases are loaded with two outs after his single.

Update, 3:34: Nunez bounces into a force to end the inning.

Update, 3:35: Ramiro Pena has come on defensively for Rodriguez.

Update, 3:41: There goes the shutout. Pinch hitter Seth Smith delivers an RBI single, 6-1.

Update, 3:42: I believe Sabathia is at 103 pitches through eight. Rafael Betancourt will now come on for the Rockies.

Update, 3:55: Homer No. 22 for Teixeira, this one a two-run shot off Rafael Betancourt. It’s 8-1.

Update, 3:56: Buddy Carlyle will take the ninth.

Update, 4:00: Carlyle doesn’t look too good again. Walk, two-run homer by Wigginton.

Update, 4:08: Carlyle finishes up. Yankees win, 8-3.

  2. J. Alfred Prufrock June 25th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

    Set it right, C.

  3. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

low complaining output yesterday may have been reason for low scoring game…

Waht’s with this line-up today?! Does Giardi want to lose!?!?!

  4. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 1:10 pm

    K

  5. Salliedogs7 June 25th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

    Go CC. Go Yanks.

  6. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

How can Girardi bat Tex third when he isn’t even hitting .350?!?!?

  7. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 1:12 pm

    CC!

  8. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Ok–let’s see this pathetic lineup score some runs!

  9. GreenBeret7 June 25th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Ugh!!! Why has Sabathia thrown so many pitches in the first inning?

    Just getting it started.

  10. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Hope Chien Ming has a good outing in A ball Monday. Wish it were at Lakewood (NJ) instead of home against them, so I could see Chien Ming pitch.

  11. Tar June 25th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

The Yankees lead MLB in scoring in the first inning. ( 10 run lead )

    Keep it going Brett!

  12. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:15 pm

As Sterling says–If Gardner can do that, he’ll hit 500

  13. Tar June 25th, 2011 at 1:15 pm

    Very cool start Brett!!

  14. GreenBeret7 June 25th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Nice bunt….now watch out for that pick-off move.

  15. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Perfect bunt. More of that Brett.

  16. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Let’s get a GMR here (Gardner Manufactured Run). Steal 2nd!

    ________
It’s been a long road for him. I too wish him luck. He deserved a better fate.

  18. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:18 pm

    Ok—way to go BG

  19. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 1:18 pm

    Yay! SB.

  20. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:19 pm

    A GMR! Way to go!

  21. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 1:19 pm

    Yeah, baby!

  22. Salliedogs7 June 25th, 2011 at 1:20 pm

    The Grandy man can!

  23. RS June 25th, 2011 at 1:20 pm

I think Grandy leads the team in hitting the ball hard

  24. Tar June 25th, 2011 at 1:20 pm

Aggressive –I love it. Go after them

  25. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:20 pm

Let’s see this pathetic offense pile it on now!

  26. Triple Short of a Cycle June 25th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

Tex has been struggling for a little bit??? After today he will be down in the 230s

  27. Triple Short of a Cycle June 25th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

But keep on defending him Jerkface

  28. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 1:25 pm

That’s why Hughes shouldn’t throw the 12-6 CB, except occasionally. Alex should have crushed that one.

  29. AldotheApache June 25th, 2011 at 1:26 pm

BoJo, do you ever check your email?

  30. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 1:26 pm

    Nice hitting, Alex.

  31. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:26 pm

Is that all you got?! Cano better do something here!

  32. Salliedogs7 June 25th, 2011 at 1:26 pm

    ARod!!!

  33. Triple Short of a Cycle June 25th, 2011 at 1:26 pm

Thats how you do it Mark. You take what they give you

  34. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:27 pm

  35. blake June 25th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Great first inning. Gardner produced run then nice AB by Alex (who is.quietly at .299) now

  36. JM June 25th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

    Arod is red hot.

  37. Hassey June 25th, 2011 at 1:35 pm

CO really is an AL team disguised as an NL squad. If we can stay out of our own way and limit the DPs an ddead soldiers on the basepaths, we should win the next two…or 50 for that matter

  38. Hassey June 25th, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Anyone else think that, in a parallel universe, Ty W. would have been a great fit for this team?

  39. Salliedogs7 June 25th, 2011 at 1:38 pm

CC has his good stuff today.

  40. tomingeorgia June 25th, 2011 at 1:39 pm

    Always liked Ty W.

  41. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 1:43 pm

    Hip hip. Nice, going opposite.

  42. Nilsson June 25th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Nunez’s good bat speed is negated by his long swing.

  43. tomingeorgia June 25th, 2011 at 1:47 pm

Already a big day for Cervelli!

  44. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:47 pm

    Double steal time!

  45. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:48 pm

Man that Cervelli looks like some player….high ceiling!

  46. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:49 pm

Cervelli is quieting and slowly climbing his average to 350

  47. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:51 pm

I think we need 3 more runs today….

  48. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:52 pm

Really sorry to hear Choo broke his thumb…Hand injuries are sometimes tough to come back from right away…

  49. GreenBeret7 June 25th, 2011 at 1:55 pm

The fans and the day tomorrow will be rather a downer. Not likely that Moose Skowron will be there, but, we can hope. he’s one of the final connections to the ’61 Yanks, along with Ford, Berra, Lopez, Richardson and Kubek. They’re the last of the big names.

  50. Triple Short of a Cycle June 25th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

    BoJo,

Great third round pick for me this year :(

  51. GreenBeret7 June 25th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

    will ***have*** rather a downer

  52. El Duque June 25th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

I think the Grandyman goes deep next inning!

Isn’t Moose very, very sick? With cancer IIRC?

  54. GreenBeret7 June 25th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

    Throat and or lung cancer.

  61. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

In old YS (pre 1976), AGon would still be chasing that ball.

  62. El Duque June 25th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

    Tex ! JEHHHH BABY!

  63. El Duque June 25th, 2011 at 2:04 pm

  65. Salliedogs7 June 25th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

    ARod locked in!

  66. Captain Clutch June 25th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

    Go Arod!!

  67. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Alright ARod—one more run and I’ll feels afe for the game.

  68. tomingeorgia June 25th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Bojo, you’re right. This lineup stinks, no patience, homer-happy.

  69. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

    Alex is limping.

  70. RS June 25th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

i noticed in his first AB that Arod wasn’t running well

  71. blake June 25th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

    .300 for Alex.!

  72. Tar June 25th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Alex is hurting- that was not a healthy person jogging to second.

  73. Captain Clutch June 25th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

I really hope Arod’s injury/soreness is his legs and has nothing to do with his hip

  74. Chris W June 25th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

It’s so nice when this offense is really seeing the ball.

  75. JM June 25th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

    I hope Alex is OK

  76. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

    tomingeorgia June 25th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

    ____
    :-) Keep it up!

  77. El Duque June 25th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

I hope Arod´s body hold up!

  78. J. Alfred Prufrock June 25th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

That right there makes me nervous. Normally, when Alex goes on a run of hitting the ball solidly and taking it the other way a lot, a power surge follows. But that limping is a concern.

  79. blake June 25th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

Alex better be ok…..they gotta have him.

  80. RS June 25th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

Now I feel bad that Arod is slated to start the ASG. He could really use the days off

  81. J. Alfred Prufrock June 25th, 2011 at 2:09 pm

RS, I always prefer my guys don’t go, but it’s a nice thing for them.

  82. J. Alfred Prufrock June 25th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

Yes, gotta have a “healthy” Alex to really have a shot.

  83. Salliedogs7 June 25th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

    Nice slide.

  84. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

    Gutting it out, Alex.

  85. RS June 25th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

Wow, never would have thought they’d send Arod on that one

  86. Bronx Jeers June 25th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

    Wow.

    Never thought Alex was going.

  87. J. Alfred Prufrock June 25th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

    LOL.

I hope we can get a bigger lead and take him out of the game.

  88. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Alex really doesn’t know how to take it easy…I didn’t want to see a play at the plate.

  89. Tar June 25th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

    Holy Crapola

  90. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

BTW–Gardenr makes that a double play

  91. Captain Clutch June 25th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Nice, you have to give Arod credit for trying to score there. A lot of batters would of stayed at 3rd.

  92. J. Alfred Prufrock June 25th, 2011 at 2:12 pm

BTW, Alex was standing on 2B, laughing with Tulo and even gave him a little friendly squeeze on the bicep.

And I thought Alex cared about winning.

  93. Niblick June 25th, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Once again the Yanks give CC lots of run support. CC needs to transfer some of those runs to AJ.

  94. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Bojo, QFT. Also, going airborne means less running for what it is worth. Good thing he didn’t get hurt there. He was smiling.

  95. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 2:13 pm

Now I feel the game is safe—5 runs.

  96. Captain Clutch June 25th, 2011 at 2:13 pm

Arod has looked like that with his lower half for about 3 weeks now. So it’s nothing new but obviously the trainers don’t think a day or 2 off will help. But he can definitely use a day or even a couple of days at DH.

  97. G-C June 25th, 2011 at 2:13 pm

Arod has been a dominant player so far today.

This is the guy we need him to be.

  98. El Duque June 25th, 2011 at 2:13 pm

Get AROD out of the lineup! NOW! Than give him an of day tomorrow! 2,5 days of will be great!

  105. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 2:16 pm

GB, Alex had better bypass the ASB.

Btw, no radio or streams of SI games exist.

    Custodio is killing it.

  106. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 2:17 pm

Wilt Chamberlain would have caught that.

Update, 2:11: Nice headfirst slide into the plate by Rodriguez to score on Nick Swisher’s shallow fly to left-center.

    LMAO!

  108. tomingeorgia June 25th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Why not try Brackman at third?

  109. GreenBeret7 June 25th, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Nunez can play outstanding defense when he doesn’t have time to think about his feet.

  110. blake June 25th, 2011 at 2:21 pm

    Nasty play by Nunez.

You just can’t help yourselves can you!

    Oh wait LMAO!

  115. blake June 25th, 2011 at 2:23 pm

Backhand in the hole and off.balance throw to 2nd.for the force…..

  116. El Duque June 25th, 2011 at 2:24 pm

That´s the way! i like nunez bat! Hope we keep him!

  117. Captain Clutch June 25th, 2011 at 2:24 pm

he hasn’t been running as slow as he did out of the batter’s box to first even on his worst day.

He wasn’t that slow but he wasn’t running as well as he usually does and you could tell that something was going on. Hopefully the Yanks tack on a couple of more runs so they can rest him for the rest of the game.

  123. J. Alfred Prufrock June 25th, 2011 at 2:27 pm

Yankfem, Nunez play was similar to Culver’s backhand play in Brooklyn moving to his right except Culver had to pivot and try to get the ball to 1B. That told me he had some range. We’ve known that about Nuney for a while.

    Nunez with the hit.

  143. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 2:49 pm

GB, I can’t find a scouting report. However, I guess they are playing Custodio at 2B this season. Last year he came off an arm injury, but was said to be a pretty decent SS. Not sure if the arm factored into the move to 2B or not. He is a good hitter who has some pop, although they have been shortening up his swing because he gets homerun happy. He stole 14 bases last year. Tyanks may have some video of him on her blog.

I will have to add back milb. I was going monthly and cancelled it after yet another feed where I could barely make out the SWB players on the field at PNC Park.

  144. yankeefeminista June 25th, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Prufrock, I think he is playing 2B as per above. However, GCL was raving about his SS D, so not sure if the arm is a factor or not.

Yes, recall the Cito play, which was a nice one–at least in that he got to that ball.

NEW YORK — Rockies manager Jim Tracy deemed Major Leagues saves leader Huston Street off limits for Saturday’s game. Street felt tightness in his right groin after securing his 23rd save in Friday night’s 4-2 victory over the Yankees.

Street, who has a career 0.64 ERA against the Yankees and has converted 4-of-5 save chances, said he reported the tightness after Friday night’s game and still felt less than healthy after playing catch with head athletic trainer Keith Dugger on Saturday morning.

Tracy said he would determine which pitcher to use in the ninth inning by matchups. With Thursday’s day off and the fact the Rockies used only Street and left-hander Matt Reynolds on Friday, there were plenty of relievers at Tracy’s disposal.

Just wing it this year & call up ban & betances next year.

Hopefully between ban, betances, hughes, nova, warren, phelps, mitchell, noesi, stoneburner,we can get an ace or two.

    ron June 25th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

    Ron–I posted this earlier–

    BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 1:06 pm
The talk of Hughes versus Nova and who is a prospect etc is really secondary to the good news that Cashman’s plan to cultivate pitching depth is working. It doesn’t matter much in the big scheme if Hughes or Nova go to the pen for half a season and it slows their development….they are both just part of the corps of young arms meant to stop the need to rely on retreads. We will soon have SIX starters who are worthy of the rotation, as opposed to many clubs that have maybe 3.

If putting a Hughes or Nova in the pen slows their growth, so what? Noesi, Betances, Banuelos, Warren, etc are all coming…and all the parts are interchangable.

  174. BoJo June 25th, 2011 at 3:29 pm

The point above is that I think Cashman has his starters figured out, and also his bullpen for the most part–and the parts are coming from the Yankees system–not from outside.

The only thing he hasn’t developed internally is a second Lefty out of the pen…and perhaps Banuelos fills that role later this year…if he can’t land a suitable one via trade or waiver.

  175. Captain Clutch June 25th, 2011 at 3:30 pm

  182. blake June 25th, 2011 at 3:38 pm

I was just looking at Alex’s numbers and he has a reverse split again this year. He’s hitting. .305 with a .968 OPS against RHP this year. He’s not struggling against lefties or.anything but considering he’s destroyed them in his career its kinda weird. He’s quietly having a great season.

  183. Nick in SF June 25th, 2011 at 3:39 pm

If Tex had gone to 2nd for the out CC would have come out of the inning with a shutout as the next hitter gounded out to 2nd which would have been a double play to end the 8th.

I’m surprised Tex opted to get the out at 1st instead of the runner at 2nd first, that’s a tough double play for any first baseman to go to first for the out and to get the runner at 2nd.

Cashman tried kennedy & hughes in the rotation at the same time & it left a bad taste in his mouth,if you will.

We are never going to have 3 kids in our rotation at the same time, unless injuries force it,probably not even 2.

Next year we have cc & burnett that are guarantees, maybe hughes & nova.

The only way i see cashman going with both hughes & nova or hughes & ban, etc… is if we can get a solid # 2 starter.

I can see us signing cj wilson & trading for a starter in the offseason.

    We can’t keep everybody.

    I can see leaving the # 5 spot open for audition & maybe the # 4 spot,if the performance is there but imo cashman will not go with 1 ace,2 question marks at 2 & 3 & 2 kids at # 4 & 5.

I can see keeping montero, banuelos, betances, but we aren’t going to have 10 pitchers fighting for 3 rotation spots, with cc as the ace & a very unstable burnett.

In 2012,the only pitcher that cashman will trust is cc & he will opt out, wich is another issue alltogether.

Watch the team put Buddy on the DL with “a bad arm.” Not that it hurts or anything, it is just bad.

She was great. I loved how fiery she got when she stood up to everyone in the end. Her spanish accent was charming, as was her twang in “Condemned.”

    AAO,

I think it’s difficult to say. He got through the first 2 innings with little problem. He was sitting 91-91, hitting 94. That part is good. Threw more cutters this time, but he had a “kneebuckling” curveball the first outing.

Would have liked more length, but not making any judgements yet.

I just traded sanchez, nolasco, uggla for greinke in my fantasy league.

I guess it was good timing since sanchez is on the dl.

Uggla has been terrible & greinke will get a lot of wins with that brewers offense & he strikes out a ton, walks almost nobody.

Hughes being a strikeout pitcher, for the most part is going to throw a lot of pitches unless he mixes some effective offspeed pitches in to get weak contact & to change speeds, keep hitters guessing.

    To many stressfull innings.

I’d like to see him cut down his fb usage to around 55-65 %.

Let his defense work for him while developing his offspeed pitches in the # 5 spot where the yankees won’t rely on him as much as they would in the 2-4 spot in the rotation.

He just has to start throwing his cb & cu more & deal with the results.

If he can’t do it,trade him or put him in the pen.

  279. GreenBeret7 June 25th, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Scratch 1 left handed starter from the acquisition list. John Danks pulled after 1.2 innings with a hip injury.

  280. m June 25th, 2011 at 5:25 pm

Definitely cheering for Karstens tonight. I noticed that Jose Tabata is leading off. His avg, homeruns as of yesterday looked close to those of Gardner’s.

I felt so guilty the other day. Upon hearing a story of a baby taken from a pregnant mother, my second thought was of Tabata’s wife. Whatever became of that? I mean she basically stole someone’s child, right?

ha, while you were taking golf lessons in south east asia, i was an extra( with 1000 others) in “hello dolly” with streisand and gene kelly directing. he didn’t like me and my friends though . we kept trying to get in the front row in the big parade scenes and once they started rolling the parade they couldn’t stop filming so we’d sneak in the front row. security kept trying to catch us , and finally they didn’t let us in after five days. they had posters with our photos at the gates where they let the extras in.

i think the final straw was when one of my friends went up to barbara and put his arm around her and had me take a photo. she thought it was funny, but kelly got ticked off. it also didn’t help that we kept having laughing fits at walter matthau because he couldn’t march for crap when kelly kept trying to show him a simple march step.

we probably would have lasted longer if we wouldn’t have been smoking the funny stuff in the fake park. my hollywood career came to an abrupt end.
