Injury updates: Jeter hits, Colon pitches, Feliciano gets on a mound
The latest from The Associated Press down at the Yankees complex in Tampa. Sounds like Barolo Colon might be closer than expected.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter did not let a thunderstorm deter him from increasing his workouts.
The Yankees captain, on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right calf, took batting practice on the field for the first time and started a running program Monday.
Jeter took 30 swings in batting practice. He fielded seven grounders on the grass before rain forced a stop. After a brief delay, Jeter returned to the field for three light sprints and some agility-related drills.
“Everything’s good,” Jeter said. “Steps in the right direction.”
There is no date yet for when Jeter, who turned 37 on Sunday, will rejoin the lineup. He’s six hits shy of 3,000, a chase that’s been on hold since getting hurt June 13.
Other Yankees also continued their rehabilitation.
Infielder Eric Chavez, out with a broken left foot, took batting practice with Jeter.
Right-hander Bartolo Colon, sidelined with a strained right hamstring, threw four innings of 15-pitches each in a simulated game.
Colon struck out three and allowed two hits, including one to injured minor league outfielder Slade Heathcott, who was the Yankees’ first round draft pick in 2009.
There have been discussions on whether Colon will need a minor league outing or if he could be ready to pitch against the New York Mets this weekend.
Left-handed reliever Pedro Feliciano, on the DL with a left shoulder tear, made 15 soft throws off a bullpen mound,
Converted reliever Mark Prior, on the DL at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre because of a strained groin, is scheduled to throw off a mound for the second time in four days on Tuesday.

So if he’s not coming back on Wednesday, when is he returning? Frankly, I think we need Colon back more than we need Jeter back.
Jeter gets 3,000 at home vs the Rays.
Love that picture. LOL
Agree, we definitely need Colon over Jeter…Nunez has done pretty well with the back, defense is another story but will improve with playing time..
Reliever/closer Chase Whitley and starter Josh Romanski have been promoted from Tampa to Trenton.
Jeter took 30 swings in batting practice. He fielded seven grounders on the grass before rain forced a stop.

Jeter fielded only 7 of the 30 ground balls he hit? He seems healthy to me!
The bat, not back

GB- I gave you a chance last night to shine but no reply.
Any chance of the Yankees calling up Terry Stiffee, a switch-hitter?
———————————————————————————————————————-
LMAO. Trader, I’m outspoken, but, even I wasn’t gonna make any remarks about that one.
Would love to see Colon able to pitch Saturday against the Mets instead of Gordon.
Any chance the Yankees will call up Golson whose been hitting .500 last 3 games with a homer, raising his BA .289. I’m on the dump Jones bandwagon and agree with Blake that Andruw Jones could be sent back to LA to greet fans at the turnstiles while handing out bobble head dolls of himself.
If he was able to field any if his own grounders at all then that’s impressive.
Trader,
They have to pay him anyway…..might as well get something.
Colon is going to join the team long before Jeter will. I never expected for Jeter to be 100% only 15 days after suffering the injury. His calf might need around 25 days to be 10%.
So Colon returns, Gordon is removed yeah?
When Hughes returns, who is removed to make room??

GB I think the new Jets are going tobe all new. At this time no mention of former Jets joining the organization. Hull and Nillison would be good ideas.
I remember going to see Gordie Howe when he was in town with the Houston franchise. Can’t remember their name. Google says they were the Houston Aeroes
Glad to read that all is well.

JF- That’s a good one!!!
GB- So you’re not touching that one with a 10 foot pole!! Bring him up, let him hit a homer and Sterling would say “it’s long, it’s hard, it’s deep’ it’s gone- a blast by the Tiffmeister!”

We have to see what Hughes is first…..but assuming he looks like himself then my guess is that Nova or Garcia get moved to the pen. Nova may get dealt yet….we just don’t know.
Need more info!
-7 ground balls. How were the throws to first base? Jump throws? Flip throw to the catcher?
-30 swings in batting practice. Did he get any out of the infield? How did his toe tapping look? How many gidp did he have?
Unfortunately Laura you are right, we need Colon more than we need jeter, even Hughes for that matter

This situation always peaks my interest; How a ballplayer flies home and not to the town where the following game will be played.
IMO, that is a lot of time spent at the airport.
I just hope the limited amount of hours spent “at home” are worth the aggravation of having to board multiple flights to eventually get to NYC
Trader, you’re just trying to get me in trouble. In my younger days (just to annoy Pete abraham) I would have made a remark. I’m trying to be a good kid.
Blake,
Why do you think Nova might be traded?, Who do you think the trade target would be?
WTP,
I’d imagine Arod has a NetJets membershhip.
Blake-
I’m not sure the Yankees will have a good “read” on Hughes before the July 31st trading deadline. Often big trades are made soon after the ASB.
When Colon is ready Buddy Carlyle goes…..Gordon will most likely stay in the long man role
When Hughes comes back then Gordon gets sent down. But Hughes will not be rushed back until he can sustain his velo for 90-100 pitches in back to back outings I would assume
Why do you think Nova might be traded?, Who do you think the trade target would be?
–
I think he will be traded because he is a young cost controlled starter that is good but not good enough of a long term bet for the Yankees. He would be good for a lesser team looking for a cost controlled starter. Starters that arent elite or with a chance to be very good that the yankees bring up should be used to make good trades. Guys who are expensive or with less years on their team control.
For the first time this season I am feeling at ease with this team. I like for the most part what we have. I think with a little tinkering this IS a playoff team. Nobody looks to be invincable. We got a shot….
GB-
OK. Hands off on that one!
His calf might need around 25 days to be 10%.

A Jeter at 10% is plenty. You cant measure his intangibles.

Yeah, back when gordie was already in the Hockey Hall Of Fame and then played on the same team with his two sons, mark and Marty. He was fun to watch when they played the Blackhawks and he and Dennis Hull would mix it up. Bobby Hull would just blow up the sidelines and unload one of his 120 MPH slap shots from about 20 feet out.

I doubt they’re flying Delta.
champ809-
i was actually referring to moves made to the starting rotation, not the roster.
there will be a very difficult decision to be made when both Hughes and Colon return.
neither of them will be sent to the pen.
that will have to be either Garcia or Nova(unless someone else in the starting 5 suffers an injury=stint on DL
For the first time this season I am feeling at ease with this team. I like for the most part what we have. I think with a little tinkering this IS a playoff team. Nobody looks to be invincable. We got a shot….

When was it ever in question that this is a playoff team?
Jerkface-
There seems to be a parity in the majors, much of it do to injuries. The Phillies are down Hamels, Blanton, Oswalt at present. Only the Giants starters are healthy at the moment, but they’d be missing their WS MVP if they make the playoffs.
Jf,
I agree on your basic statement, but i would wait for the off season to do it, right now i think we need all the pitching we can get. In the off season, even maybe ST, so the front office has a chance to evaluate Betances and Banuelos performances and the workload they can sustain next season
In my younger days (just to annoy Pete abraham)
======
GB,
Younger might be the wrong word to use there papa. Olderless or Ancientless is more like it.
If they’re flying back and forth from NY to Florida, my guess is corporate jets are the standard transportation.

“There have been discussions on whether Colon will need a minor league outing or if he could be ready to pitch against the New York Mets this weekend.”
Tomatoes-Tomotoes
Is there much of a difference one way or another?
SoS, are you hinting that I might be youth challenged?
In order for Betances and Banuelos to make their major league debut at the beginning on the 2012 season as a starter, 2 other starter’s will need to be off the team.
C.C.(i guess that’s possible given his contract, but let’s all agree he returns)
A.J. will be there
Hughes will be there
Colon and Freddy G. more than likely will be off the team
Nova may or may not be there. He could be traded or be demoted due to lack of performance
I don’t know-Two rookie starter’s on the team with a limited number of IP does not sound logical.
Is Hamels hurt? It shows him making his next start and went pretty deep in his last outing.
Colon rolls out of bed knowing how to throw strikes, and more importantly, get outs.
If there’s anyone you’d consider just bringing back w/out the minor league stint, he’s it.
There is no reason to trade Nova, and certainly not for Rodriguez. There’s little if anything to be gained by that.
Hamels is healthy.
The Phillies arranged their rotation so he faces the Sox on Thursday.
I don’t thnk trading for Wandy Rodriguez would be a good move. He’s comiing off the DL with elbow inflammation, was rocked by the Rays this past week, and the Astros seem to value him more than he’s worth.
Betances and Banuelos are more likely to be late season 2012 call-ups than opening the season in the rotation.
AnthonyMcCarron Yanks and Trenton announced Phil Hughes will make 3rd rehab start at Trenton Wed. at noon against Jays’ AA club.

Watching old movies in B&W are great. Love the shadows and light tricks of Hitchc0ck and the old John Ford movies.
And stop worrying about gray hair. Think of it this way…at least it’s hair.
I would like to see the Yanks make a move for Weaver or Anibal, but if they can’t get one of those two pick up Kuroda and go with this in the playoffs.
CC-Colon-Hughes/Kuroda/AJ (whichever two are performing the best at the end of the season)
I was having a little fun @Colon’s expense there, SoS.
Bartolo Colon, the gift that just keeps on giving.

If he is too risky obviously wouldn’t trade for him, but that is the kind of guy I’d move Nova for this year. Someone under control for more than half a season with upside. Probably would trade Nova for Liriano.
Oh and Liriano too. Try to get him if Weaver and Anibal fail.

Anibal Sanchez rhp
1 year/$3.7M (2011)
I don’t see the Marlins trading him.
Anibal is a free agent after next season.
This is the best time for the Marlins to trade him.
LGY,
I will admit I have had doubts if they were a playoff team. I did not anticipate Colon and Garcia giving what they have given. They still have s tough battle with either the Sox, Yankees and Rays going home early.
I have been wrong many times before, and I hope they breeze into and through the playoffs. I still want a quality left handed starter. So, does every other team I suspect.
With regards to Jared Weaver if I’m trading away the farm I’d rather have his teamate Dan Haren.
Who would you give more credit to the great pitching this year Rothschild or Martin?
Gb,
I think too that Betances and banuelos are late 2012 call ups, specially after the season they are having ( Looks like they need more seasoning ). But in any case they should ease them in to the rotation one by one using the fifth spot to do so.
Wandy’s contact is scary because his 2014 option becomes a player option with a trade.
With regards to Jared Weaver if I’m trading away the farm I’d rather have his teamate Dan Haren.
—–
Why would they trade Haren though?
They need him because Weaver will prob leave as a FA.
SoS,
I think both have to do with the performance of the pitching staff, see for example how Burnett was out of whack in his last start Girardi and Roschild were constantly consulting with martin, in the end Aj settle down and gave the team lenght.
A-Mac-
The only “proven” quality left handed starters, without current issues, that make my list are:
Sabathia
Lester
Gonzalez
Price
Wilson
Romero
Kershaw
Hamels
Lee
Jaime Garcia
maybe Bumgarner
I don’t see any of them available. Did I miss any-quality proven, and without current issues?

This is a video of Trenton’s new left handed starter, Josh Romanski. From his Charleston days last year. Really smooth delivery for a first year converted outfielder. He did play the outfield and pitch in college.

And of course, you can’t discuss great black and white movies and leave out Citizen Kane.
I doubt Kuroda would do better than what Garcia has given us so far.
If we’re making a trade, shoot higher.
I don’t really understand why you would trade Nova. He has pitched pretty well as a 4/5 starter. He is on track to win 15 games. He usually gives you a chance to win. He is getting used to pitching in NY, which as we have seen in the past, not everyone can do. I think he has a chance to be a really good starter long term.

==================
Agree with that – and that is one thing that some people seem to be missing during all this rotation talk. This team is going to make the playoffs fairly easily. They may or may not win the East, but they are a lock playoff team regardless of what rotation they throw out in the remaining 80+ games.
Any trades should be looked at with an eye on October and the types of pieces that can enhance their chances there. At this point, I don’t think anyone can say they trust Burnett/Nova/Hughes on the mound in October against a legit lineup and Garcia is going to really need to have his best command to navigate through a lineup like BOS.
Upgrades like Kuroda over Garcia and such should be looked at in the long view of the season.
Erin,
Your right.
The best play I have ever seen was WICKED. Its basically the prequel to the Wizard of Oz. Awesome. The pulled it from Los Angeles a couple years back. Heard it was still in NY. Not sure if they have it in your neck of the woods. Must see.
