Lineup and injury updates

Here’s the Yankees lineup for the series opener against the Brewers, plus the latest from the Associated Press in Tampa. Also worth noting that Brian Gordon is listed as an available reliever.

Brett Gardner LF
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C
Eduardo Nunez SS

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has run the bases for the first time, a key step in his rehabilitation program for a strained right calf.

The Yankees captain ran from home to first four times, first to second three times and first to third once on Tuesday at the team’s minor league complex.

“Running is probably most important,” Jeter said. “Feels good. I’m sure we’ll pick it up in the next couple days.”

There is no date yet for when Jeter, on the 15-day disabled list for the first time since 2003, will rejoin the lineup.

“As soon as I can,” he said.

Jeter is six hits shy of 3,000, a chase that’s been on hold since he got hurt June 13.

Jeter also took 24 grounders on the grass, 10 more at his normal infield position and made throws to first base. He took 47 swings during his second day of on-field batting practice.

Also, right-hander Bartolo Colon, sidelined with a strained right hamstring, practiced bunting, a sign that he could pitch in his weekend’s interleague road series against the New York Mets.

Colon, coming off a 60-pitch, four-inning simulated game on Monday, also threw long toss, ran sprints and did agility drills.

Converted reliever Mark Prior, on the DL at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre because of a strained groin, threw off a bullpen mound for the second time in four days. If there are no problems, he might throw batting practice later this week.

Keep the bad vibes going people. I smell a Yankee blowout.

knunezoblock needs to get his throws down or he might be playing the outfield like someone we once knew.

  39. Erin June 28th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

JackCurryYES Asked if Yankees are appreciably better with Nunez at SS, Girardi said he’s not “opening up that can of worms.” Stressed Jeter is the SS.

    MTU June 28th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Thanks, just can’t envision them hanging out away from the ballpark. Colon a fast food guy, Jeter, chicken caesar or sushi type.

  41. SoS June 28th, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Soriano(if he wakes up and feels like it)
    Colon
    Jeter

Look like they will be hear in July. Talk about bolstering your team up by trade deadline. Who else can say that they reloaded without a single trade?

  42. MTU June 28th, 2011 at 4:14 pm

“Soriano is long tossing and he has felt good.”

  45. BoJo June 28th, 2011 at 4:14 pm

I might as well cue up old Dallas re-runs. This lineup is useless

  46. tomingeorgia June 28th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

No body on the Yanks will be able to hit Greinke’s 4.77 era stuff.

  47. Erin June 28th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

JackCurryYES Today’s Elias eye-popping stat: In A-Rod’s last 10 plate apps with RISP, he’s 7 for 7 with 2 walks and a sac fly.

  48. upstate kate June 28th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Jeter’s fav food is chicken parm..I bet Colon is not too fussy

upstate kate June 28th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Well I had it partially right with the chicken. You are probably correct about Colon, a see-food diet type guy.

I don’t think this nickname will be catching on.

    ========

    JK,
Then I got nothing. I must admit it took me a longtime to come up with just that.
I might have been better if I went with if he keeps knoblauching his throws. Sort of like being Pavanoed for 30 days.

  57. MTU June 28th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

    Tom-

Pound for pound Colon is one of the best pitchers the Yankees have.

And you’re right whatever he eats the B’s should eat.

CC and Colon both prove that more is definitely better than less.

    :)

  60. BoJo June 28th, 2011 at 4:26 pm

If any of you compare the early ST pictures of Colon to now, it does look like he has lost a lot of weight. In spring, he had more chins than a Chinese phone book. Not you can actually count them on one hand.

  61. MTU June 28th, 2011 at 4:27 pm

    Tom-

Too bad Boomer is no longer on the Yankees that would really “round” out the rotation.

    ___________
That stat is misleading. If you throw out the games where he allowed more than 2 runs per 9 innings, his ERA would be below 2.

  64. 28 RINGS June 28th, 2011 at 4:32 pm

Keep voting for Martin and Jeter in the ASG… we have to make sure they get in.

A-Rod, Granderson, and Cano are locks at this point with the leads they have. It is probably too late to vote for Swisher/Gardner for the OF, so vote for Hamilton to hope he holds off Ellsbury, who is only 200K or so behind.

But make sure you vote 25x each for Martin and Jeter so they stave off their competitors. Jeter probably still should get it, as he has a 500K lead, but you never know. So just incase, keep voting for them.

The great Doug Davis, who is such a crafty veteran that can locate 10 different pitches with movement, has given up 12 hits and 10 runs to the Giants in 4.1 innings…that is, the Giants team with Aubrey Huff and Cody Ross batting 3 and 4

On another note, anyone who wants to complain about the Yankees lineup should check out the lineup the Red Sox are sending out against Cliff Lee tonight (though who knows, they’ll probably end up scoring 8 runs)

  74. SoS June 28th, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Tampa (GCL) sweeps a double header today. Tampa yanks of the FSL lost 3-0. heredia’s record fell to 8-2. he was only average today. 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts in 6 innings.

  86. m June 28th, 2011 at 5:09 pm

haha, sos. not going to do more than 25, maybe 50.

  87. Nick in SF June 28th, 2011 at 5:11 pm

I don’t mean to disparage WICKED, which undoubtably has abundant contemporary entertainment value and has proven quite popular (though we all know that popularity is not always indicative of quality; see: CATS).

But there are a ton of classic musicals that this person might want to check out for the sake of comparison (the person said ‘play’ but I think he meant ‘musical’? If the person meant any type of live theatrical stage performance, brush up on your Shakespeare!).

  88. SoS June 28th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

    NSF,
Lets put that in the musical catagory.
Does cirque du soleil shows count as theatrical. If so, I would put one of those in for the the second part ahead of shakespeare.

  89. SoS June 28th, 2011 at 5:18 pm

    mel,
Who are you trying to get in? The only ones missing is Gardner and Swish. Tex to start?

  90. Nick in SF June 28th, 2011 at 5:24 pm

Cirque Du Soliel… I’m going to say no, that’s in a different category.

Musicals… GUYS AND DOLLS, WEST SIDE STORY, SOUTH PACIFIC, that sort of thing.
