Jeter progressing; Prior and Soriano throwing
Joe Girardi confirmed postgame that Bartolo Colon will start Saturday’s game against the Mets. He also said that Derek Jeter is still on track to being a rehab assignment on Saturday, which would put Jeter on track to join the Yankees in Cleveland early next week. Here’s the latest from The Associated Press in Tampa.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Derek Jeter is set to rejoin the Yankees on Monday in his return from a calf injury.
The shortstop said Thursday he will play minor league rehab games Saturday and Sunday at Double-A Trenton and be with the Yankees for a series in Cleveland.
“I feel good now,” Jeter said after working out at the Yankees’ minor league complex. “I feel a lot better. I’m ready to get out of here.”
The team captain is six hits shy of 3,000. A return next week could put him on track to reach the milestone at Yankee Stadium during a four-game series against Tampa Bay from July 7-10. Then comes the All-Star break, and New York opens the second half with an eight-game road trip.
Jeter had been eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list Wednesday but wasn’t ready. His bid to become the 28th major leaguer — and first with the Yankees — to get 3,000 hits has been on hold since he strained his right calf June 13 against the Indians.
“I hadn’t done anything for a couple weeks, so it takes a little while to get loose and get in baseball shape,” Jeter said.
Jeter, who turned 37 on Sunday, is batting .260 with two homers and 20 RBIs. He has 12 extra-base hits in 262 at-bats and a .324 on-base percentage.
Jeter increased his intensity in Thursday’s workout, running from home to first after hitting a ball and also turning double plays. He had 60 swings in batting practice, took grounders and ran from first to third.
“Things have gone well,” said Jeter, who is scheduled to workout Friday in Florida before departing for Trenton.
Also, converted reliever Mark Prior, on the DL at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre because of a strained groin, could throw batting practice Saturday.
Right-hander Rafael Soriano, out with right elbow inflammation, has started long toss sessions.

I still have hopes of Prior contributing something this season.
Jeter gets 3,000 next Thursday at home vs the Rays.
Hmmmm…I think Jeter gets #3000 next Friday.
Pretty nice to see this team finally on all cylinders. Knew it all along that the pieces were right in front of us, they just needed to get rolling.
I’m off-have a good night all.
Repost
Big ballparks don’t matter with this team. They can hit long balls anywhere.
They were supposedly going to meet their match playing in Seattle and Oakland about a month ago and it didn’t make any difference.
The state of California is not to blame for the quality level of anyone’s comments here.
Also, if I had to take a guess, one of our starters is going to the bullpen. I think Nova would make the most sense. His stuff would play up better than Garcia’s, and Colon is just too good to put in the bullpen.
If anything were to happen to one of the other starters, you would still have Nova on hand to punch back into the rotation.

If it comes to that, one of Noesi and Nova should head back to AAA so as to be stretched out as a starter. Otherwise it becomes a bagl of snakes again. As in scrubs getting starts. As it stands right now, Noesi would need at least a couple of weeks to be able to start effectively. Other then working with Rothschild and facing Major League hitters occasionaly this half season has been a loss for Noesi.
Believe Noesi is already on his way to AAA so Colon can come back. I’d agree with sending Nova down to keep him stretched out. Its unfortunate, but he’s the only one with options and you don’t want to risk losing Garcia by DFA’ing him…

I really don’t believe this one bit. A lot of people seem to share this sentiment. Noesi is seeing major league hitters, learning how to pitch ahead and behind big league games, and learning how to get out of jams at the big league level.
Here’s boosted his own stock greatly by letting Girardi and Cashman seem him play. He’s boosted his trade value as well, as now other GMs have seem him play with their own eyes.
He’s also helped the big league team WIN games. How is that a waste?
I’m really not seeing it. He can be stretched out, as you mentioned, in the matter of a couple of weeks too. It’s not like he’s been stunted.
Nova is pitching fantastic this month and needs to stay in the rotation. I would trade Freddie before sending Nova anywhere. He has a team win/loss record of 10 and 5 in games he’s started. His ERA since may 1st is 3.78 and in June its even better. Plus Nova does not get rattled with RISP. His numbers are good against both lefties and righties.
I also highly doubt Noesi thinks this has been a waste of his time. I’m sure he’s loved it.
That’s great news about Noesi. Sending Nova down wouldn’t hurt either. He’s had a great learning experience and could work on his secondary pitches and repeating delivery. Personally I think until they see what Hughes and Colon have, a six man rotation makes sense. If Colon slips back into his level of performance pre injuryand Hughes is 2010 pre All Star game form, the Yankees are cooking into the playoffs.
Any state that passes an illegal alien bill is destined to have really bad Mexican food. In my opinion that’s just not worth the risk.

Not to get too greedy with my board posts here, but Garcia has out pitched Nova all season long. Nova’s doing a good job, but he’d be no worse for wear to be in the bullpen, and he’d be a better bullpen fit than Garcia.
Bronx Jeers.
We’ve got a really good Mexican restaurant, and all the employees are legal!
Nova is a better pitcher right now then fast Freddie! He also has a HUGE plus in that he is part of the future! Nova does not crumble with RISP! Is this hard for you to grasp? Hughes stinks with RISP!
I say we keep Gordan as the longman and send Nova to get some regular work in AAA. I would hate to see him rotting in the pen. Garcia has pitched great and also deserves to stay in the rotation. There doesnt seem to be any room for Noesi at this time and from what everyone hear says about him. He might be better off going down as well if being a starting pitcher is what we’re looking for. Unless hes trade bait than its a moot point.

The rotation issue may very well work itself out on it’s own over the next 10 days or so. They’ve got time to figure out what they want to do.
One thing is for sure. Neither Garcia or Colon is going anywhere.

No doubt Nova is more part of the future than Garcia, but it’s about getting the most value right now. Most value right now would be keeping Garcia in the rotation.
Hughes ain’t some schlub. He wasn’t perfect last year, but he was good enough to win 18 games, and he had some very dominant outings, and then some outings that he gutted it out. He also had that one great playoff start against the Twins (seems that everyone has forgotten).
I value Rothschild input very highly in developing pitchers. Noesi and Nova are very interesting. Pitchers throwing mid nineties are not that common. The question is – what do they need to reach the next step, as in #3 starter or better? They seem to need a swing and miss pitch.
As much as I cant stand slow pitch baseball. I agree with Kev. Garcia has earned his spot in the rotation.
Colon has looked like a 1b this season. No reason to even talk about putting him in the pen.
Hermosa Beach is fine. Do legals bring you your Lite Beer?
Bronx, no, the police do routine checks when something illegal happens.
so tex hit 300 today. he’s got 5 1/2 years in pinstripes to hit 200 home runs to get to 500, and perhaps automatic induction to the hall of fame. hopefully he’ll age well and keep the pace up. i’m not sure he’ll do it on his current contract, but he probably will get there

10 year contract extension ought to do it.
Speaking of 10 year contracts. Alex might be knocking on 3000 hits door by the end of next year. 246 hits to go.
Good news that Mark Prior is progressing especially after what he’s gone through over the last few years.
If healthy and throwing free and easy, he could be a valuable piece in August and September when the Yankees are on the road more often than not.

I missed the game as I was at work ,but wow- great job CC and fanastic sweep by the Yanks.. They are playing amazingly well.
Two things:
I hate the idea of a 6 man rotation and I detest the subway series. The Yankees have to take 2/3 or it’s going to be considered a failure no matter how well the Mets are playing.
I hate the idea of a 6 man rotation

Any reason why?
Keep CC on turn, let everyone else work around that.

You have now entered the Twilight Zone.
Jerkface, I like everyone to be on turn……….6 man is just a way to wimp out of making a decision. Pitchers are used to pitching on 4 days rest- I prefer it that way.
“I don’t have any experience with Plantations, but the plantains I can get in New York are pretty damn good.”
————————————————————————
Indeed, LGY, indeed.
Wasn’t the idea to use the 6 man rotation only until the AS break or did I misunderstand that?
A guy (Nova) has 7 wins & 8 QS before the first half is over, you don’t him down no matter what.
Sheesh.
Especially given he’s a young guy. Garcia won’t be here next year, no matter what. Nova will. If anyone gets demoted to the BP or traded, it’s Garcia.
Again, sheesh.
Until Hughes proves he’s stretched out and has the arm strength, I’d put him in the pen. Leave CC, AJ, Colon, Nova and Garcia as starters for now. Colon may start to tire further down the season or, if Garcia falters instead, move him to the pen and return Hughes to the rotation.
Frankly, as far as trades, I’d persue Tyler Clippard for added depth. Let’s just say I have absolutely no faith in Soriano.
Wow, now some moron says everyone in the south is a bigot, and a one time slave owner. Talk about stupidity, we have a left coast winner!
Later folks, have a great night. It appears baseball talk is about over.
I get the feeling that Posada is not ready to hang em’up anytime soon (many saying this is last year on the team). Since the ‘incident’ not only has he been the hottest hitter on the team, they’ve been winning series ever since and playing their best ball of the season.
I could see a one year deal for him next year if he can continue this recent production. It would be a shame to see him on another team, not even sure if he would that? Either way he’s seemed to figure out the transition.
I could see a one year deal for him next year if he can continue this recent production.

Better to part 1 year early than 1 year late
There is no room for Soriano in this bullpen.
Better to part 1 year early than 1 year late
–
If he finishes with 20/80, I don’t see why that wouldn’t warrant another year at maybe a more reduced role.
Posada will be gone next year, he is blocking the progress of Montero.

Lol.
“I love children especially when they’re well cooked.” WC Fields.
If they go 7 man rotation then there would be room for Mitre
The coming of Mitre and Colon could spell the demotion of Noesi and Gordon . Who will go for Hughes and Soriano.
These moves could weaken our pen as Freddy could go there.
I see Nunez sent down for Jeter.
Pena will get sent down for Jeter.
My hunch:
CC
Colon
Hughes
Burnett
Garcia
Rivera
Soriano
DRob
Wade
Logan
Mitre
Ayala or Gordon (fight for last slot)
Martin
Cervelli
Tex
Cano
Jeter
ARod
Chavez
Nunez
Gardner
Granderson
Swisher
Dickerson
Jones vs Golson vs Pena (I’d cut Jones and make Nunez the 5th OFer and use Pena as utility man)
Nova and Noesi go to SWB for more development. Using either in ling relief is a waste. Best to have them stretched out and ready in case of need.
I see Pena going back down, Nunzez’s bat has been too good for demotion. Hopefully his throwing improves.
Mick–
You told me I should remind you when you are seemingly attacking Betsy with no cause. Consider this your reminder.
Bojo – Noesi may be AAA bound, not Nova. He’s done too much to go back. That’s why they’re even talking about a 6-man rotation. Maybe the bullpen at some point, between starts. But not AAA. Nice problem to have. Contrast that with the situation in Beantown.
bojo
that was not an attack.
just an opinion of dislike.
BTW–I totally foresee Soriano being given EIG role so DRob can go back to being a true fireman. It is a strategic luxury that hardly any other team has…and I suspect the Yankees will see it that way.

Nunez needs to go down, play everyday, improve his throwing.
We don’t need his bat, we need Pena’s glove more.

Once Jeter and Chavez are back, I totally agree that I prefer Pena’s glove…I wouldn’t mind seeing Nunez repalce Jones though…
Or getting more development time at SWB..either is fine with me.

not my problem she can’t take it…
I kind of suspect that if Gordon can’t beat Ayala for last spot, that Cashman will find a way to trade him to a club that will give him a shot. I don’t believe (or know for sure) that either he or Ayala can be sent down without clearing DFA waivers.
Ayala has earned his spot.
They are not going with a 6 man rotation.
Freddy should be kept in the pen as an emergency starter.
I’m not sure Hughes will pan out.

The pompous blog scold strikes again. Ironic in light of the fact he was recently scolded for posting inappropriate content here.
Before deciding on Gordon one way or another, I would hope they look at him in the pen to see what he can provide. As Newmann said, that was a mistake they made with Clippard.
Gordon and Noesi will probably be sent down to start at AAA.
