Jeter, A-Rod, Cano and Granderson named all-star starters

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 03, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson have been named all-star game starters.

Alex Avila moved ahead of Russell Martin in fan voting, so Martin won’t be in the starting lineup.

Still waiting for reserves and pitchers.

UPDATE, 12:13 p.m.: Mariano Rivera has been named an all-star.

UPDATE, 12:15 p.m.: CC Sabathia was not named to the team. Looks like Dave Robertson did not make it either.

UPDATE, 12:18 p.m.: Russell Martin is on the team as a reserve.

Man…sorry Russ. Glad Alex got the nod….he deserves it.

    Bojo,

Sign me up. I know you think it’s not plausible at all but Oakland could use long-term offense. They could deal from their rotation and stay competitive in that department. Beane must have some plan to revamp that offense.

I really hope he would show interest in young bats like Montero, Nunez, Gardner and Joseph.

DRob should make it – K rate and curveball are just spectacular

  4. Rich in NJ July 3rd, 2011 at 12:13 pm

I’m happiest for Granderson most of all.

    ********

Moneyball Beane would in theory like Joseph with the walks – Nunez probably too much of a free swinger – would not know his opinion on Montero – also not sure if Beane would like the lefty/rigthy splits on Gardner

  6. blake July 3rd, 2011 at 12:15 pm

    Rich,

Yes Im.very happy for Granderson. He has played fantastic baseball this year…..just great.

  7. Joe from Long Island July 3rd, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Congrats to the guys. Ben Shipgel really lays out the case for Robertson.

I wouldn’t imagine that Nunez’ hammy is severe – It sure didn’t seem to bother him yesterday.

Who is Pendleton replacing? Maybe they decided to keep Noesi active, in AAA? I’m thinking it’s not Mitre, because yesterday’s performance shouldn’t have been a surprise.

  8. LGY July 3rd, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Hopefully Martin and Jeter pass on attending.

Neither player is deserving and both could benefit from taking a few days off.

And Kevin Long – they both did a heck of job working on the swing.

  10. 4time July 3rd, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Avila’s OPS is .180 points higher than Martin’s.

  11. Rich in NJ July 3rd, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Moneyball was about looking for undervalued skillsets. At the time the book was written, OBP was undervalued, but it really no longer is. But it’s not that Beane merely prioritizes OBP, and btw, you know who prioritized it before Beane? Stick Michael. That’s how he built the Yankees, and Cash has followed that model.

Anyway, trading every young bat would be suicide for the Yankees.

  12. blake July 3rd, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Robertson should definitely make it….don’t.know.if he will but he has been dominant

  13. Crawdaddy July 3rd, 2011 at 12:18 pm

“Hopefully Martin and Jeter pass on attending.”

Martin didn’t make the all-star game!

  14. charlestonchew July 3rd, 2011 at 12:18 pm

It should have been Robertson over Mo in all honesty.

  15. LGY July 3rd, 2011 at 12:18 pm

It has been reported several times that the Mets are willing to eat all or most of Beltran’s contract to get good prospects in return.

He won’t be moved as a salary dump.

  16. LGY July 3rd, 2011 at 12:19 pm

He didn’t make it as a starter.

  17. MTU July 3rd, 2011 at 12:19 pm

D-Rob should be an All Star.

    He is in my book.

    ;)

  18. BoJo July 3rd, 2011 at 12:20 pm

While I’m sorry Martin didn’t make starting line-up, I think the fans got it right.

I expect Tex to replace AGon (boycott) and hope Martin goes as back-up.

  19. LGY July 3rd, 2011 at 12:20 pm

    CC didn’t make it?

That’s BS. He has been one of the 3 best starters in the AL.

Bob Watson followed Michael as well

OBP was also learned from Alderson as well

    Rich in NJ,

Nobody said Beane will demand every young bat on the Yankees. That would be kinda ridiculous.

  22. Crawdaddy July 3rd, 2011 at 12:21 pm

CC pitching next Sunday so he won’t be playing in the game anyway.

  26. BoJo July 3rd, 2011 at 12:23 pm

I’m sure there will be some adjustments as players drop out for boycott. Perhaps DRob and CC will make it after all.

  27. JM July 3rd, 2011 at 12:23 pm

Wondering if they will get this game in. Raining hard here at the Jersey Shore and forecast is for more rain throughout the day into late night…..

  28. LGY July 3rd, 2011 at 12:23 pm

    yankeefeminista July 3rd, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Bojo, not true. We have been signing IFA’s later and later. That July 2nd date is just the beginning date. We may have signed Brito right at the start; however, we didn’t sign Romero until October of last year and Custodio until April of this year, I believe.

  35. blake July 3rd, 2011 at 12:25 pm

I think Hanley needs to get out of Florida……move to the outfield and get in better shape.

  36. MTU July 3rd, 2011 at 12:26 pm

    Bojo-

He could look a tub of butter, or even a beachball and still be a hitter.

    Tremendous natural talent.

He needs to get out of the Land of the Marlins.

  37. Rich in NJ July 3rd, 2011 at 12:26 pm

    Bret

With age and underperformaces on the team, why trade any?

  38. BoJo July 3rd, 2011 at 12:26 pm

    _____
To be honest, I don’t follow NL baseball much. Only watch for particular players…JJ, Strasburg, Jimenez….haven’t seen that much of him.

  44. 4time July 3rd, 2011 at 12:28 pm

CC’s WHIP is pretty bad for a top starter and his ERA is still over 3. In this day and age, win total no longer carries much weight unless the other peripherals go along with it.

Hard to argue him over guys like Shields, Haren, Weaver, Beckett, Gonzalez, etc.

Plus teams like Seattle, Minny and Cleveland need representation – so guys like Masterson, King Felix, Pedina, etc. might have have made it instead. Plus we all know Washington will take a couple of his own guys – Wilson and Harrison maybe. So CC was the odd man out in a strong field.

  45. Rich in NJ July 3rd, 2011 at 12:28 pm

I’d like to get Beltran if reasonably priced. I’d hate to see him in the RS.

  46. Rich in NJ July 3rd, 2011 at 12:28 pm

    Montero.. but it isn’t happening.

  47. Crawdaddy July 3rd, 2011 at 12:29 pm

They’re not trading Martin, not with the fine work he’s done with this staff.

  48. MTU July 3rd, 2011 at 12:29 pm

    Bojo-

When Hanley took things seriously he was one of the most talented young players in the game IMO.

  49. blake July 3rd, 2011 at 12:29 pm

    MTU,

The Marlins will probably trade him sometime…..but my guess is they’ll value him.as.a SS and I just don’t think he is much longer.

  50. Crawdaddy July 3rd, 2011 at 12:30 pm

    Rich,

How many times have seen Montero play in person?

  51. LGY July 3rd, 2011 at 12:30 pm

    —————–

    His peripherals are outstanding.

2nd lowest FIP in the AL, 7th lowest xFIP, 2nd highest WAR, 3rd most innings pitched.

  54. Rich in NJ July 3rd, 2011 at 12:30 pm

It’s hard to separate out what Rothschild has done v. what Martin has done, but catchers need to hit more than Martin has in order to be untradeable.

  55. Yanks78 July 3rd, 2011 at 12:31 pm

How did Tex not make it as a reserve?

  56. Rich in NJ July 3rd, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I have seen Montero play five times.

  57. blake July 3rd, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I would like to get Beltran as well……would be a great pick up for the rest of the season if the Mets would play ball and not.ask a fortune from the Yankees. I believe Beltran can.almost dictate where he wants to go though……maybe he’d like to just stay in NY the rest of the season.

  58. MTU July 3rd, 2011 at 12:31 pm

    Blake-

I think you’re right about the part about the way they might want to value him.

If he gets serious again and looses some weight he might make an excellent RF’er and the bat can be stupendous as we know.

  59. BoJo July 3rd, 2011 at 12:31 pm

    J. Alfred Prufrock July 3rd, 2011 at 12:28 pm
It’s amazing how stupid people can be about offense from catcher, as if it doesn’t have some tangible connection to putting a lineup at a distinct advantage to actually win ballgames, but is instead some luxury insisted on by the fussy.
    _____
Very true IMO. There are a number of ways to construct a lineup to get offense and defense. Both win games. Having a stud bat either at C or DH works…there is NO ONE SET formula.

And by the way, I believe Martin has won 2 Silver Slugger awards. Let’s see how his numbers llok at the end of the year before passing final judgment.

  61. blake July 3rd, 2011 at 12:32 pm

The only question for me is whether CC should start the game…..not whether he should be on the team.

i have not seen montero play but many many scouts who rave about his offense have..

the guy is 21 and doing more then well offensively at AAA. After dominating all other levels…

cc, robertson ,ad ntex should be in the game. standard anti yankee, rich team anti hysteria..

CC is a ACE and deserves the game. RObertson is the top set up man right now in the game.

    Nova sent down.. WoW..

  66. blake July 3rd, 2011 at 12:33 pm

I think Hanley’s future is at 3b or corner outfield.

He has fallen into a bit of disrepair but that kind of talent doesn’t just disappear.

  74. yankeefeminista July 3rd, 2011 at 12:35 pm

CC’s FIP and ERA+ put him right in the mix. Both better than Haren’s.

  75. jpb173 July 3rd, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Wow!!! Kim Jones just reported that Ivan Nova has been sent to the minors. How about that…the kid wins 8 games in half of a season and gets sent down.

  76. MTU July 3rd, 2011 at 12:36 pm

There’s you answer about who is bumped.

  77. Joe from Long Island July 3rd, 2011 at 12:36 pm

Tough for Nova. It’s a tough business. I still expect him back in the rotation later on.

  78. Rich in NJ July 3rd, 2011 at 12:36 pm

Nova may not realize it, but he will be back in the rotation (or someone’s rotation), but Aug 15.

  79. BoJo July 3rd, 2011 at 12:37 pm

Makes sense to send Nova to SWB…H eprobably won’t get another start before ASG, and bringing Pendleton up gives Girardi another arm in pen immediately. Still can being him back after ASG if needed.

“It’s hard to separate out what Rothschild has done v. what Martin has done, but catchers need to hit more than Martin has in order to be untradeable.”

Martin’s the one on the field and there is no way Girardi or Cashman will allow Montero and Cervelli to catch this staff for an entire season in 2012.

  82. yankeefeminista July 3rd, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Predictable about Nova. Poor kid, but he will be back.

  83. Yankeeclipper July 3rd, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Yanks send Nova to AAA and recall Pendelton. Pendelton will be replaced by Hughes. I think Yanks are playing with Nova’s confidence. The kid pitched well and while he mighe be odd man out in the rotation he at least deserved to stay as spot starter, long man and I would be fine if we experimented with a 6 man rotation.

Pendelton is garbage not sure why this move has to be made now if you are not calling Hughes back up just yet

  84. Crawdaddy July 3rd, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Rich places more importance on the catcher’s offense versus his defense which I don’t agree with.

  85. cs in la July 3rd, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Tough break for Nova, but don’t see how being a spot starter of a long reliever would benefit him over pitching on rotation in Scranton. He’ll be back.

  86. Dill Pickler July 3rd, 2011 at 6:15 pm

CC not making the team is an absolute joke. CJ Wilson is a nice leftie, but nowhere near as good or deserving as CC.
