Jeter hitless and winless in return
In a single inning, the Yankees broke up a no-hitter, took a two-run lead, then blew the game. A.J. Burnett gave up a three-run home run to Austin Kearns in the seventh inning, opening the door to a 6-3 Yankees loss in Derek Jeter’s return to the lineup. Jeter was 0-for-4, and the entire Yankees team was being no-hit until the seventh, when they took a short-lived 2-0 lead. The big blow came from former Yankees outfielder Kearns, who hit a two-out, go-ahead homer.

It sucks. Just sucks. But it’s just one game.
Why do we always seem to play Cleveland on the 4th? Is it some Steinbrenner tribute?
The trouble with a game like this is the bats go so quiet that they are just not going to do much. Being shutdown by a pitcher tends to make batters press a bit and try to do too much.
It could be worse, the Yankees could have signed Lackey… :O
Girardi has to treat AJ like a rookie. At the 1st sign of trouble late in the game get him out of there, especially when he had already thrown 110 pitches and had nothing for AAA Duncan. It’s weird how Girardi has a really quick hook with Nova and Garcia but leaves AJ out there to dry all of the time. That has been Girardi’s biggest negative as a manager. Instead of going to the pen he gives the pitcher an extra batter or 2 for no reason.
Mo with a sore triceps – Girardi says no plans to have it examined further. Hello Mike Adams or other SD reliever.
It’s all Jeter’s fault
No Mo? Need blowouts in our favor this week.
BryanHoch Mariano Rivera was unavailable tonight with a sore right triceps, Girardi says. No tests planned as of now
————-
This is great…Maybe it’s because he had to warm up in a 6-0 game.
The problem is Girardi.
————————————————————————–
No, the problem is AJ. He was facing 2 of the best hitters in baseball, Duncan and Kearns, and guess what. He came up small. Again.

This was not AJs fault. He was done after the Duncan AB and everyone knew it except Girardi

matt1766,
Agreed, it’s amazing how some people really can’t see it.
If this happened to any other pitcher, they would be complaining about how Girardi left in a pitcher who was CLEARLY done. But since it’s AJ, then we get the idiotic “he implode ALL the time”, “he never goes past 5 innings” blah, blah, blah…..
If Arod catches the foul, inning over, the haters would be SILENT. Just like they were last week… waiting for AJ to have a bad game to spread their crap.
Nobody mentioned that the Yankees have a really short BP. Girardi is trying to squeeze outs anyway he can. AJ is pitching to a hitter batting under 200 with no HRs. Three top BP guys missing will do that to you.
Good night folks.
I want to know if people are lurking and then wait until we start losing to post or do they come here after the tide turns?
Next time alex should not go after a fly ball with gardner out there.
He has enough trouble on foul pop ups.
Gardner deferred slightly and it cost us a game.
who expects this place to be joyful after a loss?
So who is the new 8th inning guy. D Rob for the 9th.
Those will be some exciting innings the way D Rob likes to get things done. Lots of looking at the tying run in scoring position, I imagine.
Chad trying to increase hits with a volatile headline. SMH.
Yep, Girardi had a short bullpen, but hey, you have to use them when the guy is gassed. Bull that AJ was still throwing well.
Yeah, the yipping on here is out of hand again.
Call the BP.
But there is no one in the BP. Ayala, Wade, Noesi – I repeat no one.
AJ is still a headcase.
I knew he would lose it once we got the lead.

Even though Lackey plays for the Red Sox it’s hard for me to be happy when he struggles.

No such difficulty here.

When it comes to the things he’s dealing with you might change your mind
Oh no question that AJ was laboring. Girardi was trying to catch a break.
Chit happens.
I wish I had a partyline on Cashman’s phone. He is calling all the west coast NL teams for some relief pitching. I wouldn’t be surprised if he trades Gardner and a few other pieces for a substantial bat and a bullpen arm.
Question is though do you really think AJ won’t implode after the long Duncan AB? Got to go to the pen, come what may.
The tide didn’t turn after the loss, mick.
Okay, off to bake a pie. Take my mind off the game.
Have a good evening, Yankee fans.
Low hits = 4th of July.
Enough with the excuses from Girardi. You could tell on his face that he knows that he made a mistake. Wade and Noesi were available, get a fresh arm into the game to face Kearns. Kearns hit the ball extremely hard in both of his at bats against AJ. You can’t let a tired AJ face him again. The bullpen was short but there were bodies out there, use them.
Who other than Mo wasn’t available out of the pen?
Girardi says, after the Duncan AB (110 pitch count) that he didn’t think AJ was fatigued & thought he was still pitching well at that point & left him in. smh
Girardi thought AJ could fan Duncan. It didn’t pay off, but I’d take that bet if I had to as well.
Tomorrow is another day. Sawx lost too, so nothing lost. But nothing gained.
Tomlin cracks first but, surprise, surprise, Burnett can’t hold the lead. This is the guy who should have been sent down, not Nova. But, of course, we all know that isn’t going to happen because he earns $16.5 mill a year. Two games in a row that we could and probably should have won. Jeter back with a bang (not) and A-Rod slumping big time. Boy, how quickly this game changes!
This team needs a break, esp Alex and Martin.
CORRECTION:
The big blow came from former Yankees outfielder Kearns, who hit a two-out, go-ahead homer.
SHOULD HAVE READ:
The big blow came from former Yankees catcher Girardi, who let Burnett ptich with two-out in the seventh.
Short bullpen explains a lot. Thank goodness they have D-rob to fill in while they rest Mo’s arm. Bounce back tomorrow and Wednesday to restore order with another series win. And they are still in first – go Twinkies, go Jays
and let’s GO Yanks!!
The only good thing tonight was the 6:30 start
Did Girardi miss Kearns’ first two at bats?
So, when is it AJ’s fault?
Awful lot of excuses being made for this guy. Every time he implodes, it is the manager’s fault.

You’re not dealing with a normal human being. Don’t expect too much.
Whenever AJ pitches, Yankees need to score 8 or more runs. Then when AJ gives up 5/6 runs, Yanks can go to the pen.
The joys of being a manager. Keep a pitcher in, you lose, bring in a reliever, you still lose.
I agree, I was surprised that AJ was left in to face Kearns. That was an aberation – Outside pitch, opposite field, first HR of the season, into the wind.
I hate to get on Arod but next time he needs to get out of the way. He never catches those pop ups down the line anyway. It’s the outfielder’s ball…I knew once that ball wasn’t caught that AJ would implode.

Thanks for the heads up
And as someone pointed out earlier it wasn’t Albert Pujols and David Ortiz AJ gave up the runs to but that fearsome duo of Kearns and Duncan…and we all know how good they are. People just need to stop making excuses for this guy. With the bullpen light, this is when you needed him to hang tough. Instead, he hung one over the middle of the plate.
I don’t really get all the Monday Morning QB’ing…….It’s the first game of a very long stretch, Giradi has a very thin pen, AJ is facing the bottom of the order and screw the Kearns ab’s prior….He had to roll the dice and hope to get through the inning…..The killer was the dump foul ball that really only Gardner had a shot at….A very difficult catch for a 3rd baseman and it’s unfortunate that the wind kept blowing the ball away from Gardner……As Bo Knows so eloquently put it ” chit happens”….And Bo does Know

One’s own health and their fight for their own survival is more important than anything. Even the team their husband plays for. My Dad told me once that without your health you have nothing. Very true.
WCYF knows first hand all about that poster.
This ones on Burnett. If you can’t get Duncan or Kearns out then something is wrong. I don’t care how Kearns looked in his previous AB’s. This guy had 0 homers, is below the Mendoza line, and I believe a sub .300 OBP.
7 out 8 Nunez sits, Jeter is washed up. Burnett pitched a good game and a routine out causes him the win.
Yankees 0-2 post Nunez (as starting SS) with Yankee SS’s 0-8.
No way AJ should have faced Kearns. Kearns had a couple of pretty good swings against him J earlier in the game. Girardi tried to steal the out and save the bullpen, and lost the game instead.

Very well said Vineyard Yankee. You summed it up nicely.
Usually when I watch the Mets or Red Sox and they’re losing I toss out every insult in the book but when it comes to Lackey… it just doesn’t feel right.
what was Nunez before he went 7 – 8?
And how good did the pen look in the 8th ????/

Cancer claimed all four of our parents. (Mine and my wife’s) A very ugly, nasty disease that is tough on its victims and their families. Hopefully Lackey’s wife will be OK, they probably have kids which makes it even harder. He must have alot on his mind over and above his pitching.
I will be happy when Jeter gets his 3000 hits so he can get out of the way. 51 million dollar fraud
Chad,
I’m a huge fan of your work on this site, i’ve been a reader since peter abraham began it and pushed for you guys to be his “successors, and I appreciate the passion you have for your job. With that said, Your headline for this post is no different that a trashy NYP headline grabber, a press marketing device that has no purpose considering your viewership isn’t being considered by a ADDHD wandering eye at the magazine rack during his daily morning deli visit. your viewership is that of people willfully choosing to type in your URL and come here for their yankee news (or the lucky few who are just stumbling onto this treasure trove of yankee tid bits via a link somewhere).
Please don’t become complacent with your posts. if there is nothing to say scintillating , don’t spew hyperbole for the sake of the post. fans will be coming to read what you say post game regardless of what your headline may read. you may consider my opinion to be a bit far reaching, but consider this: the simple decision to not feed into the “jeter goes winless – yankee goes winless” connection that will absolutely be present in every low-end yankee column in the tri-state area with this head line title, would have assuredly differentiated yourself from the increasingly large number of yankee sources who will undoubtedly jump on that absurd notion
This team is 50-33 and in first place.
