Rivera unavailable because of elbow soreness

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 04, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Mariano Rivera was not available tonight because of soreness in his right elbow. He initially felt it after last night’s game, and it lingered today.

“I’m not concerned about it, I can tell you that,” Rivera said. “I’m not concerned at all, just things that happened.”

Rivera soreness is in the muscle. Joe Girardi said it’s basically at the bottom of his triceps. Rivera is hopeful that he’ll be available to pitch tomorrow.

Luis Ayala was also unavailable tonight because he’d pitched three out of the past four days. Girardi said he might have changed his seventh-inning strategy if he had a full bullpen available. It seems the pitching situation might also have affected the Yankees decision to option Chris Dickerson. They didn’t want to send out Ramiro Pena because Eduardo Nunez’s hamsting is still a little sore, and they didn’t want to lose a pitcher because the bullpen was down two arms.

Here’s Rivera.

You know what else might’ve changed his strategy? Getting AJ out of the inning when he should’ve been. Alex should NEVER have been playing his position on that foul ball, and if he was insisting on going for it, he should’ve called off Gardner. He screwed that play up, and it totally turned the game.

Can’t win ‘em all, but you need to win the ones that you can. This was the second wasted game in a row.

  2. Hassey July 4th, 2011 at 10:12 pm

    defense
    stats
    injuries
    bullpen shoices
    all the usual conversations
can someone at least admit that Jeter, Martin and Tex badly hurt our day-to-day offense
I’m not saying they can’t win anyway, so calm down
I’m just asking for one person to say what we all know already
In my book, I’d rather have Nunez and Montero, potentially out there hitting line drives and making errors

  3. UnKnown July 4th, 2011 at 10:12 pm

I’m glad the AL All Star team has a guy who Balked in a winning run tonight like Crow on it.

No need for D Rob I guess on the team… What a joke.

  4. DocTodd July 4th, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Unreal how that bag of cr@p Kearns hits his 1st homer of the year of off us…the guy is just awful

  5. DocTodd July 4th, 2011 at 10:14 pm

Montero needs to be brought up, Jeter needs to hit down in the order…

  6. TheStraw July 4th, 2011 at 10:16 pm

Oh look, the guy who predicted a 90-72 season shows up after two losses to complain. Sorry, dude the yanks have to go .500 in the second half to make your prediction true. Ain’t happenin’.

Tex does not hurt the day to day offense. And while Jeter may be on the downside of a career, I am sick of people bashing a guy who has done nothing but bleed pinstripes throughout his career.

Yanks are 14-5 in their last 19 games. Calm down.

  7. Betsy July 4th, 2011 at 10:17 pm

I don’t want to worry too much, but it’s hard not to whenever Mo feels soreness. That could explain yesterday’s game, of course. I guess if he feels it’s nothing, it probably is – Mo is one player I completely trust to know his body. At his age, he’s going to be sore more often than a younger player… I think we should rest him until through the ASB.

I like AJ as a teammate, but he’s a mediocre pitcher. He’s had an ok year, but nothing special……..and he didn’t do what he had to do tonight and hold the lead.

Icky to lose 2 games in a row……….

  8. Hassey July 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

    who’s complaining?

    I’m just stating the obvious…

  9. DocTodd July 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

I’m hoping Hughes is just lights out….that would be a boost, to have CC , Colon and Phil…

  10. LGY July 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

AJ is the weak link in the rotation

  11. Mell July 4th, 2011 at 10:23 pm

and he didn’t do what he had to do tonight and hold the lead

    =====================================

Yet he was a terrible defensive play by Rodriguez/Gardner from 7 shutout innings and a likely win. I thought he pitched a pretty nice game overall. Some things working against him as it ended up, with the poor defensive play and Rivera not being available. He might have been asked to do a little more than he otherwise might. Gotta throw some credit Duncan’s way. Pretty nice AB that took some life out of Burnett.

  12. EA July 4th, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Ideally, AJ won’t start a playoff game.

Chief, despite his fringy stuff, is 10x more trustworthy.

Cancer claimed all four of our parents. (Mine and my wife’s) A very ugly, nasty disease that is tough on its victims and their families. Hopefully Lackey’s wife will be OK, they probably have kids which makes it even harder. He must have alot on his mind over and above his pitching.

    ——————————–

Sorry to hear about the loss you and your wife have experienced. May they rest in peace.

Yes hopefully she’ll be ok. I can’t imagine how difficult that must be for him.

  14. 4 NYY July 4th, 2011 at 10:27 pm

That’s kids baseball for you ! Box of chocolates ! Oh, these are adults !

  15. UnKnown July 4th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

I don’t think Freddy’s stuff will play very well in October. That junkballer stuff that Freddy has he can get away with against the lesser teams, but will get killed with it in October.

I’m not saying that AJ is the best option either. That’s way Cashman better find a viable number 2 or at worst quality number 3 for postseason play.

CC – Colon (if he can stay healthy) – and ?

  16. Crawdaddy July 4th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Is it sorness in the triceps or elbow?

  17. Mell July 4th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Sorry to post a joke after this. Cancer is beyond horrible. We all ( self included ) have faced many losses of family and friends to this most retched disease.

    Wretched

  20. Wang IS Taiwan July 4th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

Sorry, but that soreness has a lot to do with Girardi asking Mo to warm up when he doesn’t even come in to pitch. You can’t have him warming up everyday and NOT expect this to happen.

  21. Pat M. July 4th, 2011 at 10:38 pm

I’m not going to be shocked if Freddy is toiling elsewhere in a few weeks….Much depends on how Hughes looks

Straw, the problem is that regulars here treat these guys as if they’re not trolls, which they are.

Because they engage them over and over again, they dominate the thread with their hate. They should just be ignored. How many times do we have to hear that Jeter’s range isn’t extraordinary? Like we don’t know our own player’s strengths and weaknesses or like they’re gonna “school” everyone with the lowdown on a guy we’ve watched for 15 years?

It’s comical how condescending and really stupid they are.

I say “our” player, because he’s not “their” player. In fact, I feel no “we” at all with those guys. Jeter’s “we”. They’re not “we.”

They’re losers with a hatred of the guy that borders on the pathological. If they romp all over the board with their saliva dripping everywhere it’s because regulars make them feel more than comfortable smearing Jeter with their transparent gratuitous crap.

They suck & they should be ignored.

Hmm. Maybe I not give Chief enough credit then.

  24. LGY July 4th, 2011 at 10:39 pm

Thanks. They dropped like domino’s, all in less than two years. Our two youngest kids hardly knew their grandparents. No one deserves that nasty disease, including John Lackey’s wife.

  27. Melk Man July 4th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

Garcia is their 3rd best pitcher and it’s not particularly close.

Burnett has gotten pretty far with his great stuff, right? I’m sure people would have all the confidence in the world sending a guy with that kind of stuff to the mound in Fenway, because he has had so much success there as a Yankee… oh wait…

Other people, not just you, know the pain…no one wants to hate on Jeter…just stating what’s happening on the ground NOW, not in 2003

  30. Betsy July 4th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

    LGY, lol

I don’t think Freddy is going anywhere. Nova is a nice pitcher and he’s done well, but you can’t say he’s completely reliable yet after half a year. With Freddy, you know he’s a solid veteran – and more than that, he’s been tremendous. He was considered their 4th starter (Cash referred to Nova as the 5th starter) and I just don’t see how they can trade him.

Honestly, I don’t get what the Yankees are doing with Phil. One start before the ASG – a break of at least 8 days before his next. Why? Makes no sense. How many starts will he have before the trade deadline? Maybe 2 or 3? Let’s face it, the Yankees are not going to find out enough about Phil in those starts to make any difference. They are going to have to make a trade (or not) without sufficient info.

  31. blake July 4th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Well I set my DVR and avoided all electronic devises this evening so I could watch the game in peace when I got home….then get home settle into my recliner….press play and there are the stupid Phillies and Marlins playing…..silver lining is that it sounds like I may have been better off not watching tonight anyway. Go get uhm tomorrow. Happy 4th everyone.

  32. Captain Clutch July 4th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Girardi has to be careful with Mo. He has already pitched a lot this year. The next time the Yanks have a 5 run lead in the 9th and the pitcher walks a batter Girardi should smack himself if he calls the bullpen to get Mo up. He has to stop having a panic attack and let it play out, Mo isn’t 30 years old anymore.

  36. TheStraw July 4th, 2011 at 10:49 pm

After reading O’Connor’s book, I refuse to criticize the Captain. This guy is the example of what a winner, player and team leader is. The thing that strikes you in the book is how much respect the other players have for him.

I believe that Derek will do whatever the team needs him to do to help. They just have to ask him.

    ==========================

    Yup. 1998-2010.

He is losing some power. Slugging percentage and OPS dropped 3 consecutive seasons heading into this one. Of course, his starting point was otherworldly (his 2007 season) . I think the hip issues have hurt his power game a little. He still puts up some numbers though.

  45. TheStraw July 4th, 2011 at 11:04 pm

By the way, after seeing the highlight of the foul misplay, it looks to me like Gardner should have called Alex off and made the play.

  46. UnKnown July 4th, 2011 at 11:05 pm

You know looking at this game, I’ve become convinced that Martin is done offensively. His workload has to be cut by at least two games a week if not more. Now whether it’s Cervelli or Montero the Yankees don’t have any choice. With the lack of offensive punch, theory says Montero be allowed to get his feet wet. But even with Cervelli’s punchless 270 of last year that is more then the Yankees have gotten from Martin in the last two months.

I would be hesitant about dealing Garcia. I realize he’s essentially a stopgap this year, but team’s pitching situation can change on a dime. It’s a matter of attrition over the long season, and the more depth the better.

Plus, he’s a good bet for type-B status in offseason. I would seriously consider offering him arb.
