Jeter, Granderson and Sabathia shine in Yankees win
Derek Jeter was one of eight Yankees with at least two hits tonight. Curtis Granderson hit two home runs, Brett Gardner stole two bases and CC Sabathia pitched seven scoreless innings in a 9-2 win in Cleveland. Francisco Cervelli wasn’t only the lone Yankees starter without a hit, he was the lone Yankees starter without two hits. Jeter moved within four of career hit No. 3,000 and Granderson surpassed last year’s home run total with his 24th and 25th of the season. Sabathia picked up his Major League-best 12th win of the season and has been absolutely dominant in his past three starts (22.2 innings, one run, 33 strikeouts).

Bojo – I hadn’t thought about Isringhausen, but, you’re right, he would be very tradeable, and a nice acquisition for a set-up guy. Probably wouldn’t take a ransom to get.
nice job by Terry Pendleton’s youngest son
I doubt that they will trade for a non-LH reliever unless Soriano isn’t coming back.
Luke Gregerson of San Diego is another stud flying under the radar since he has been hurt, but recently activated. He is an exceptional reliever when healthy.

I think it was JF who rightly said it is more important to get a good reliever than a LHP…since we have several righties who do well. I agree with him.
Lost in this Jeter hit watch is Arod’s HR drought.
I love the BA from Alex, but would like to see more HRs.

I’ve been saying that for a long time now. However, I think that we’re pretty set in terms of pitching. Obviously, if somebody great like Matt Thornton becomes available we should make a move, but otherwise, I don’t see much need. I really would like a nice big bat for the bench.
Isringhausen would be a disaster in YS. 4 home runs allowed in 26 innings along with 12 walks. No thanks.

Unless Selig changes the rules, I don’t expect him to be pitching to the Yankees.
Alex will go on a homer binge soon and get back on track for his 30
Nice win. Hughes for the series win.
Joe,
Pendleton is the logical choice to go to Scranton. With 45 pitches, he wouldn’t be able to pitch for 3 days or more. Another this is that he’s just learning how to be a full time reliever. He’s had a few before this year, but almost exclusively a starter.

True. These names are contingency in case Mo is hurt and Soriano can’t come back effectively.
Very enjoyable, non-trolled game thread folks. Thanks for the good conversation…enjoy the evening!

Nice win. Hughes for the series win.

I’m really curious to see how he does tomorrow. CC’s performance tonight takes the pressure off Hughes somewhat, now that the losing skid has been snapped.
Horne and Okomoto just combined to blow the trenton game. 6-3 lead in the 7th inning and Horne allows 5 runs with Okomoto giving up the walk-off grand slam.

I did not know this. My heart goes out to him.
Thanks Aldo
I see you had no idea what he and his wife we’re going through. I apologize for any confusion.
Cito Culver led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a single, forced a pick-off throwing error and scored the winner on two wild pitches.

It was in response to somebody suggesting Isringhausen being picked up as bullpen help
Stinks that Alan Horne got lit up. He was on the fast track a couple of years ago, before the injuries came on. From what Chad has written, he seems like a good kid.

“I think it was JF who rightly said it is more important to get a good reliever than a LHP…since we have several righties who do well. I agree with him.”
Obviously, but I don’t think Cash shares that view given how money he has wasted searching for LH relievers.
GB – I think Isringhausen might do reasonably well as a pickup. Not saying he’s a must have, far from it. He’d have to be better than Cory Wade to be acquired, I think. Right now, I think Cash seriously looks at only the top tier relievers as poss. targets. The pen is not a problem area, even if Soriano doesn’t make it back.
I still wouldn’t be surprised if the Mets trade him, though.

Good for you, Aldo! I’m glad to hear that you and yours are doing well. Did your boys (you have 2 sons, correct?) come out for the holiday?
I don’t think the Yankees have to make any trades, but that appears to be a minority view.
Wow now the Twins beat the Rays on a questionable call at first. Lots of bangers out there tonight to finish games in the East.
I just saw the replay of the play at the plate in the Sox game.
How the hell did the ump miss that call??
He had a perfect angle of the play…
Rich I don’t think the Yankees have to make any moves to make the playoffs but to win the W.S. I think they do.
No doubt LGY. Unreal…
UnKnown
The problem is that for moves to have the kind of impact you are speaking of, the cost would probably be prohibitive.
Joe, I’ve been poking around to figure out what bullpen help is out there. A lot of names, but, none really any better than what NY already has besides the usual suspects like Adams, Rodriguez and Bell. Wouldn’t mind getting Brad Ziegler, Craig Breslow or Grant Balfour from Oakland, who might be picked up at a reasonable cost.
No instant replay strikes again
GB – unless it’s a clear cut upgrade over what they’ve got now, I don’t like making a deal just for the sake of doing something.
Sounds like Joe is thinking of giving Jeter a day off, maybe tomorrow. Said he’s played four games in a row….
I don’t either, Joe, but Breslow’s a pretty solid lefty that could help. I like Ziegler more than Balfour, but, from the right side, Soriano’s effective return is the key.
Ugh, the most frustrating thing happened to me. I was driving home from the upper reaches of Northern California and missed the whole game. I was annoyed from the getgo, I hate missing CC starts.
So just as I’m leaving Fortuna, following along on gameday with Cisco at the plate with the bases loaded in the 2nd inning, I lose reception! I kep staring at the page on my phone but it wouldn’t refresh; it was frozen with the bases loaded and Cisco’s face staring back at me.
Eventually, of course, The Eyes hypnotized me and I crashed and died, but great win aside from that!
I’m not even home yet, so I’d better get back on the road.
See ya!
Wanna split your gut laughing check this out.
Pay particular attention to what Epstein says about the Sux farm, and to his comment about having pitching depth.
Just so I have a clear conscience make sure your sitting down so when you fall over laughing you don’t hurt yourself too much.
“BoSox Looking At Position Players Over Pitchers
By Zach Links [July 5 at 9:52pm CST]
As the trade deadline approaches, the Red Sox are probably going to be looking for position players rather than pitchers, GM Theo Epstein told Peter Gammons in an appearance on NESN (video link).
“I don’t see a ton of pitching help out there unless it’s the few guys who can really make an impact, who will take your farm system to get,” Epstein said. “I think we could benefit from a complementary position player in the right spot.”
Epstein cited the organization’s pitching depth as a reason why the club won’t seek out arms before the deadline. For the time being, he says, the club won’t look to tap into that depth to replace John Lackey in the rotation. The 32-year-old has a 7.47 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 through 13 starts this season.
Who ? Dubront, Bowden. Pictching depth ?????
Yeah. That’s why they’re forced to use Wakefield.
Hilarious.

2 YOUNGEST are at FSU, but home for the summer. Before yesterday, hadn’t much more of them than a blur as they were grabbing my car keys since they’ve been here.
Well, it sucks that Derek will need four hits tomorrow to reach 3000, but at least I’ll get to see Phil pitch. Let’s go for another series win.
Looks like Aceves will be getting Lester’s starts
Rich,
For what is worth, i’m on your side in this matter, i don;t think we need to make a trade, even if you make one that you would think could really make an impact, the postseason is too unpredictable for the cost it would imply both in prospect and cash
… hadn’t SEEN much more of them …
Enjoy the game JCPD. Hope it’s memorable. Drive safely.
Aldo,
Thats life!, i”ve got two girls and hardly see them anymore as well
MTU, I will enjoy and I will drive safe.
Sox pitching depth:
Al (I’ve got a bad back) Aceves
Tim (I’m a thousand years old) Wakefield
Andrew (I’m on my tenth team) Miller
John Lackluster
Oh yeah. A mile long and a mile wide. Deep. And really scary.
“the postseason is too unpredictable for the cost it would imply both in prospect and cash”
I agree, luis.
The RS are probably going to get Beltran, which will suck, but that’s life.
GB-
Oh. That’s a hell of an equivalence. Aceves and Lester.
What a hoot.
We NEED a lefty in the pen, but will probably have to just wait on Pedro.
Anybdoy know his recent status?
With the kind of pItching depth the Sux have I guess it will be no problemo at all when Beckett’s back goes out either.
Just reach down and grab another. They have so many to choose from. It really isn’t fair.
Aldo-
I believe all Feliciano is doing is playing catch at this time.
No timetable.
MTU and GB,
This is the time to expand the lead, two or three games maybe
I’m still waiting for Sherman and co. to write an article saying they were wrong about Granderson. I’ll turn old and gray before I get that – this guy is flying unbelievably under the radar. I defended him from the beginning. I felt that he would be a force in the playoffs and that he’d have a huge year this year………..How does he not get more attention, forget nationally – just from even the NY papers?
Wanna see what pitching depth really looks like:
CC
AJ
Colon
Garcia
Hughes
Nova
Noesi
Phelps
Warren
Mitchell
What an amazing comeback season for Lance Berkman. On a pace for 40+ HR and sporting an OPS of 1.018!
Good for him.
Aldo-
He’s finally healthy again.

I follow the NLvery little.
Did Houston just give up on him too soon? Or did he just need a change of scenery?
“The RS are probably going to get Beltran, which will suck, but that’s life.”
The Sox need him more than the Yanks.
Nothing wrong with driving up the price though.
Aldo-
Bad knee(s). He had surgery. Not quite 100% when he was with us.
He said it’s fully healed now and you see the result.
Have a good night everyone. Time to dream.
I’m gonna picture Phil with his Mojo workin’.
CC is in beast mode. 2 great back to back outings. I hope he strikes out double digits in his final start before the ASB as well.
Good night everyone, nice thread folks
I checked out the Red Sox starters in AAA and AA. One pitcher has pitched well, a guy named Weiland. His AAA stats are quite good with few hits and a lot of Ks. He is 24. Other than that, not much at all. I have no idea if Weiland is a god prospect or not.

Just saw it.
Ump was right on top of it and unobstructed. Yet he clearly missed it.
Unreal.
But the Jays sure were teeing off on Papelbonehead.
let’s have a parade jeter hit a double on a meatball right down the middle. he got his usual 50 foot bleeder first hit. since jeter is so hot maybe they should bat the king 4th to take advantage of his power………………..
pendelton is going down because he threw 45 pitches and BTW he stinks also…
CC is a stud. lucky the einsteins that pick the all star team are fools….
sabathi under 3 ERA, 12 wins, a ton of innings. yep he is not worthy,,,,,
Ivan Nova down but not out via Mike Ashmore:
SCRANTON, PA. — Confidence has never been a problem for Yankees starting pitcher Ivan Nova.
That’s Scranton Yankees starting pitcher Ivan Nova.
The now 24-year-old righthander would routinely tell Thunder reporters after stellar starts that — to paraphrase — the best was yet to come. And, well…he was right. Nova wasn’t long for Waterfront Park, promoted to Scranton midway through the 2009 season after posting a 5-4 record and 2.36 in 12 starts.
Before he had even thrown a single pitch in Trenton though, Nova was a name to watch, as he’d been returned by the San Diego Padres after failing to stick following a Rule 5 Draft selection. That selection seemingly came out of nowhere, but it became quickly apparent why the Padres had shown an interest in him.
“It was cool in Trenton,” Nova said.
“I had a good time in Trenton. We had a tremendous manager down there in Tony Franklin and a tremendous pitching coach. It was good to be there.”
Nova started the 2010 season in Scranton and seemed destined to put PNC Field behind him quickly as well, going 12-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 23 starts before getting called up to the big leagues for good in August. Well, almost for good…
Despite a winning record (8-4), improved ERA from last season (4.12 compared to 4.50) and improvement in recent outings, the Yankees chose to option their promising young pitcher to Triple-A Scranton. While not bitter about the move, it’s safe to say Nova was more than disappointed in it.
“It would be difficult for anybody, especially for a young guy,” he said. “I was enjoying my time in the big leagues, but the decision that I had to come back down to Triple-A, it was kind of hard. But I’m just trying to put that away and focus on baseball and try to do my job and hopefully get back to the big leagues.”
There is somewhat of an upside to the move, difficult as it may to be see for Nova, in that getting innings as a starter in Triple-A seems preferable to him as opposed to a move to the bullpen at any level.
“I’m going to have the chance to keep working on my pitches and working on my command,” he said.
“I wouldn’t want to be in the bullpen in the big leagues, so I’d rather be in Triple-A starting. They made the decision, and I’ve just got to accept it one way or the other and keep working hard and find my way back.”
The way back shouldn’t be a long one for the Dominican-born man they call “Super Nova.” Triple-A has been a breeze for him, and he doesn’t seem to think this stint — however long it may be — will be any different.
“I’ve been here before, and I know how it goes here,” Nova said.
“I’m not going to say it’s going to be hard, because it’s not going to be hard after being in the big leagues. But they do have really good hitters down here too. You can’t get too comfortable. You were pitching in the big leagues, and now you’re going to do something different in the minor leagues? You’ve got to keep working and doing the same thing and pitch better than how I was pitching in the big leagues.”
Nova will get his first chance to do just that when he takes the ball for manager Dave Miley on Thursday night in Scranton, when the Yankees are slated to host the Buffalo Bisons.
http://thunderbaseball.wordpre.....-demotion/
Nova sounds very level-headed. I like him even more.
