Jeter and Rodriguez replaced by Peralta and Youkilis

Here’s the announcement from MLB…

Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta has been named to replace New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Boston Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis has been named to replace New York’s Alex Rodriguez on the American League’s active roster for the 82nd All-Star Game, Major League Baseball announced today.

Because Jeter and Rodriguez were fan-elected All-Stars, their replacements on the roster were chosen by American League All-Star manager Ron Washington in conjunction with Major League Baseball.

In addition, because Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre are the highest ranking available players on the Player Ballot, they will be starters for the American League in Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic.

Its amazing that Beckett can continue to throw at people and rarely ever gets tossed yet Kevin Gregg says some words to Ortiz and gets tossed. Ortiz’s sense of entitlement is sickening. He crowds the plate and freaks out when someone has the balls to pitch inside. The sad fact is that pitchers nowadays are too scared to brush him back. That cretin should get hit every time he steps to the plate

  2. TheHansons July 8th, 2011 at 11:10 pm

Good that we still have the same number of Yankees. Could definitely do with Youkilis in the game.

  3. TheHansons July 8th, 2011 at 11:11 pm

The video of that fake fight is pretty fun to watch. I wish they really came to blows.

  4. Betsy July 8th, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Just read about Betty Ford – RIP to a very strong lady. Her husband was a favorite based mostly on his genuine decency and I always loved reading about their strong marriage. She made a real difference in peoples’ lives.

  5. MONSTERofMD July 8th, 2011 at 11:13 pm

The best part is Beckett was livid in the locker room that Gregg should have been tossed after the 3rd pitch!

Just got home and I am PSYCHED to fire up the DVR and watch a little DJ3K!!!!!

  7. Bronx Jeers July 8th, 2011 at 11:31 pm

In selling my mint condition ticket stub if anyone’s interested in owning a little piece of Yankee history.

  8. Nick in SF July 8th, 2011 at 11:32 pm

    Never mind.

  9. Nick in SF July 8th, 2011 at 11:45 pm

I would like to buy that ticket stub, Mr. Jeers, but my memorabilia budget is going towards a stub from that one game in which Rafael Soriano had a clean inning.

  10. tyanksfan36 July 8th, 2011 at 11:57 pm

    Jeers

sucks that those annoying Rays did that to the you and the other Yankees fans tonight. I was just reading on Twitter about how the Rays screwed over the Yankee fans, it got me thinking. As we all know, Baseball is nothing without the fans and another thing we know is how much revenue the Yankee fans down here bring to the Rays and Tropicana when the Yankees play down here. I think they get their best numbers during the Yankees series. That was a low blow for them to do that regardless of whatever garbage it was that Maddon was spewing.

    __

How about I sell you one from when Soriano gave up a game winning home run to Robinson Cano last July when he was with the Rays?

  13. BoJo July 9th, 2011 at 12:15 am

Does anyone have a stub to the Brian Gordon experience? I’d like to invest in it.

  14. LGY July 9th, 2011 at 12:19 am

I think Slade Heathcott could throw better punches with a blind fold on and one hand tied behind his back.

That was the sissiest bench clearing brawl I have ever seen.

  15. LGY July 9th, 2011 at 12:19 am

Was Ortiz trying to throw a left hook or pull Gregg in for a bro hug?

I am guessing bro hug. Round of milkshakes to follow….

  17. UnKnown July 9th, 2011 at 12:55 am

Hate the Rays. They moved up the most hated teams list tonight.

  18. pft2 July 9th, 2011 at 12:55 am

Class act by Jeter sitting out the ASG, he would have received a lot of attention there given the 3000 H run, but it shows his priorities are right. Youk and Beckett (hurt his knee tonight), both have physical issues, but will still go.

Took the Yankees almost 600 AB to hit Papi and then he was hit on the bum. Given the way the Yankees have been outhit by Red Sox pitchers, and some of them quite painful hits and not bum shots, maybe they should take some notes about how to do a bench clearing brawl. It’s been awhile since the Red Sox and Yankees have got into it.

  19. I Am Winning July 9th, 2011 at 1:21 am

I’m pretty sick and tired of this Jeter getting his 3,000th hit nonsense, mostly because it’s been LONG overdue; and maybe that’s why my emotions are very strong towards this. HOWEVER, out of respect for Jeter, which they knew what was going on, and for my sake so I can finally stop reading Jeter headlines all day, unless he goes on an offensive terror, the Rays are beyond pathetic.

They aren’t going to compete for anything this year yet they are beat up. Who cares? If their already beat up, they might as well make themselves a AAA team because the season isn’t yet half over.

I’m sure before this morning nobody thought the Rays would be on the sh*t list of so many Yankee fans.

  20. UnKnown July 9th, 2011 at 1:32 am

Maddon will probably IBB Jeter everytime up the rest of the weekend after he gets one more hit. What a dork, him and his welder’s glasses.

  21. pat July 9th, 2011 at 1:36 am

    Beckett on brawl-

“We’re a good hitting team. You can’t just be hitting our [expletive] guys because we’re scoring a lot of runs,” said Beckett. “That’s how the game is played. [Expletive]. Maybe they saw something different. Maybe they saw something they didn’t like or whatever. But if it’s just because we scored eight runs in the first inning and they start throwing at our [expletive] guys, it’s going to be a long year.”

Which of their [expletive] guys was hit?

O’s reaction- Greg, Jones, Markakis and Britton

  22. sammiejohnson July 9th, 2011 at 1:40 am

Not going to comment on Maddon’s eyewear (If I was, I would say: “stylin”) :)

    Ok. I did comment.

  23. I Am Winning July 9th, 2011 at 2:21 am

    pat,

It’s a shame I’m telling you good point, since it’s the fact, but good point.

  24. Rich in NJ July 9th, 2011 at 2:31 am

Beckett may be more FoS than any player to ever play the game.

  25. Bronx Jeers July 9th, 2011 at 7:29 am

Youkilis taking the ARod’s spot. That’s just great.

Might as well send Papelbon and whoever’s playing SS for them as well.

I really want to see a beatdown on these Rays today. Jeter goes 4 for 4.

  26. Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 7:44 am

    Bronx Jeers-

Good morning. Enjoy seeing live, the milestone of Jeter getting his 3000th hit.
I’m enclosing a line from today’s NY Post for you.

David Price already gave up one historic hit to Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium. Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits at Yankee Stadium with 1,269 by blasting a home run off Price in the Rays left-hander’s major league debut on Sept. 14, 2008.

I also see where Carlos Beltran was added by Bochy to the NL squad. I hope the few Yankees attending the ASG shower him with TLC to remain in NYC but with the Yankees!

  27. Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 7:49 am

Also from the short article in the Post:

“If he leads off with a single and doesn’t score, honestly, I’d probably be fine with that,” said Price, who lives near Jeter’s new mansion in Florida. “I would much rather see it live than on TV. It’s pretty special to be here right now with him about to be the only Yankee to accomplish that feat.”

And Price knows what he would do if he does surrender the historic hit to Jeter.

“Stand out there and wait for everyone to stop clapping, like I did last time,” he said.

LOL. I’m sure he’ll be clapping also!!

  28. Shame Spencer July 9th, 2011 at 7:52 am

“Hate the Rays. They moved up the most hated teams list tonight.”

Couldn’t agree more, Unknown. The Devil Rays are now the team I’d be most likely to blow up if I had access to “the button.”

  29. Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 7:56 am

    Shame-

With their low attendance the Rays might just dissolve!!!

  30. blake July 9th, 2011 at 8:00 am

David Price would look really good in pinstripes one day…..everything I’ve read or heard about him suggests that he’s just as good a kid as he is a talent.

Beckett is hilarious……talk about pot and kettle. Of course its also funny that the super serious, take no crap,we want Orioles again start plunking guys when they are getting their butts handed to them. What a joke on both ends.

Derek will get his 2 knocks…..fear not.

  31. blake July 9th, 2011 at 8:01 am

    I really can’t stand the Rays either…..

  32. Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 8:04 am

    Blake-

    From NY Post:

Giants manager Bruce Bochy added Beltran to the National League All-Star team, and you can be sure he would love to add him to his offensively challenged Giants lineup. Beltran and Jose Reyes will fly with the Giants contingent to the All-Star Game on Sunday in Phoenix.

  33. Shame Spencer July 9th, 2011 at 8:18 am

That’s the part that pi**ed me off the most Trader!!

I don’t understand how the team that has about 10 loyal fans got to screw 50,000 people out of being a part of chasing history.

  34. blake July 9th, 2011 at 8:18 am

    Trader,

Yea Beltran would be a good fit.for the Giants.

  35. blake July 9th, 2011 at 8:22 am

Jeter doesn’t have as much leeway now…..but I still think he will get the 2 hits he needs this weekend.

  36. Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 8:24 am

Reports that Yankee scouts at both Cubs and Nats games to look at John Grabow and Sean Burnett, both lefties. I sure hope not. Don’t need another situational lefty in the bullpen, and marginal ones at that!

Thinking small-I wonder if the Yankees have renewed interest in righty Reed Johnson to replace Andruw Jones. Would love for them to bring Kerry Wood back to the Bronx to finish out the year.

  37. tyanksfan36 July 9th, 2011 at 8:38 am

I posted this last night. Its about time people started hating the Rays as much as I do

“I was just reading on Twitter about how the Rays screwed over the Yankee fans, it got me thinking. 38. blake July 9th, 2011 at 8:46 am

I don’t like hardly anybody in the AL east right now……I guess I don’t have anything against the blue Jays aside from that they hit homers like crazy when the Yanks play them…….that team is being very well ran now and they have deeper pockets than the Rays do.

  39. yankeefeminista July 9th, 2011 at 8:47 am

Heading back today after getting drenched yesterday. I am really annoyed we aren’t playing a doubleheader. Now thrilled about having Sept. 22nd tickets instead of tix for this weekend. As I sold my Sunday tix at beginning of season, I doubt I will head back tomorrow if Jeter doesn’t get the two hits today.

Here’s hoping good AJ shows up. That’s my expectation. I will take AJ’s last outing *before the jack* in a heartbeat. I will even play AJ’s walk-out music in the car to facilitate a good AJ performance. Let’s hope that Joe doesn’t leave AJ in too long. At least we have a rested BP.

  40. yankeefeminista July 9th, 2011 at 8:48 am

*Not* thrilled (too early for me to be awake. Damn Yankees!)

  41. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 8:50 am

    YF-

In this instance I would have gone with Freddy instead.

  42. yankeefeminista July 9th, 2011 at 8:52 am

MTU, I kind of like AJ pitching today on normal rest. I am hoping we see the good AJ and the bad Price.

  43. blake July 9th, 2011 at 8:52 am

Freddy has pitched better than AJ this year.

  44. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 8:54 am

I have always disliked Joe Maddon because I think he is petty, vindictive, and undignified. And a whiner.

    ;)

  45. blake July 9th, 2011 at 8:54 am

Yanks did a pretty nice job against Price last time……if he just throws fastballs then they’ll be ok…..its when he’s mixing in the other stuff for strikes that he’s really tough.

  46. yankeefeminista July 9th, 2011 at 8:57 am

blake, yes, by all means, let’s see a lot of FB’s. Price can be quite hittable sometimes. I am hoping to see that pitcher, although I will take a pitcher’s duel with AJ triumphing and Jeter getting two hits. I am not greedy! :D

  47. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 8:58 am

    YF-

What’s going on with Manuelito ? What has happened to his command ?

I predicted he would be in at least the top 10 by the end of the season. Right now he is rated 13th.

I hope he doesn’t let me down.

At this moment Betances looks better to me.

    Enjoy the game.

    :)

    Blake-

That is correct. Freddy has pitched better and given the choice I would have gone with him.

  48. blake July 9th, 2011 at 9:06 am

    MTU,

Joe said that he wants to give Freddy extra rest when he can so I guess that’s the reasoning.

Banuelos is just struggling with throwing strikes right now sounds like…..maybe he’s just trying to be too fine with his location instead of challenging guys…….he’s still really young for that level.

  49. Ys Guy July 9th, 2011 at 9:06 am

we used to have 3 ‘killer b’s’. is brackman (2-6 7.96) done?

  50. blake July 9th, 2011 at 9:08 am

Betances is having a great year though……

  51. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:12 am

    Blake-

Yes. Maybe so on Manny. I don’t think he’ll be ready for prime time at the beginning of next season. I thought he might be.

And you’re right he’s barely out of diapers so it’s not an issue.

  52. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:15 am

Three B or not to three B ? That is the question.

    Methinks not.

    :(

  53. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:21 am

Will the “next wave” of young Yankee pitching be better than the 1st ?

  54. Joe from Long Island July 9th, 2011 at 9:22 am

Let me start by saying that I’m a long, long time Derek Jeter fan.

And I sincerely hope he goes 1-1 today, with three walks. In a Yankees’ win, of course.

You see, because of unexpected work committments, I had to give up my tickets to today’s game.

So, if Jetes gets his 3K today, I will not be in a good mood. At all.

We can all celebrate Sunday, and have a few days off to recover.

  55. Joe from Long Island July 9th, 2011 at 9:23 am

I think Brackman has another year and half on his contract. So, I think they’ll stick with him thru that. After that? Decision time.

  56. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:24 am

    Joe-

    Look on the bright side.

You’re lucky they didn’t go for the DH today.

    Your chances are better.

    ;)

  57. yankeefeminista July 9th, 2011 at 9:25 am

MTU, Manny had trouble with harnessing FB command last year. But was peaking at end of year. Nothing fatal. He will improve over time. Betances FB command has also been an issue, but the CB has been unhittable and his velocity sometimes compensates for FB command when he is throwing 98. I expect when I see them next time around they will both be commanding their FB’s better…

Gotta fly, enjoy the game, all!

  58. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:29 am

    Enjoy the game YF. Thanks.

And speaking of flying, I’ve got to go soon too.

  59. blake July 9th, 2011 at 9:30 am

    Yankeefem,

How.fast does Betances usually grow his curveball? Any idea

  60. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:31 am

    Blake-

It depends on when he plants it ?

  61. yankeefeminista July 9th, 2011 at 9:32 am

    Thanks, MTU. Enjoy your day!

  62. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:37 am

    Blake-

    Just curious.

If there were a reasonable way to trade Burnett (there isn’t) would you do it ?

In other words, do you consider his time with the Yankees a success ?

  63. blake July 9th, 2011 at 9:37 am

    MTU,

    Its a curveball…..not corn ;)

  64. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:38 am

Me. I don’t think he has been anywhere near worth his contract.

Hired as a #2. Has generally pitched like a #4.

    ;)

  65. 86w183 July 9th, 2011 at 9:39 am

    Morning all

I understand the Rays’ decision but it’s another example of players not understanding or appreciating the game. It’s not just about the pursuit of 3,000, it’s also about the fact that thousands of people planned around this weekend and likely will not be able to do the same in September.

I guess those guys just aren’t used to dealing with the ramifications of cancelling a sold out game.

Still I’m sure they’ll enjoy their revenue sharing check

  66. 86w183 July 9th, 2011 at 9:41 am

I’ve been saying from day one that Brackman will not help the Yanks. Banuelos and Betances will both pitch in the major leagues in 2012…. but for whom?

  67. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:41 am

    Blake-

I guess I misunderstood when you said “grow” his curveball.

    My mistake.

  68. blake July 9th, 2011 at 9:42 am

    MTU,

I think that’s a tough question ……if you consider it by value/dollar then it was a huge failure. However if you look at it i’m the sense that he helped them win a WS and that he’s been very durable then its not nearly as bad…..he’s been a lot better this year…..if he coukd be a solid 4 or 5 for the rest of his deal then there is value in that despite the fact that he’s overpaid…..I guess a lot depends on how much value you want to put on that 09 title and how much you think he had to do with it.

I would certainly trade him if I could …..no question about it……but that’s not realistic at this point. So far its not a great contract……but the Red Sox have recently given out two that were worse in Dice K and Lackey.

  69. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:42 am

    New one ==>

  70. MTU July 9th, 2011 at 9:45 am

    Blake-

Thank you for taking a stab at a difficult question.

  71. Vineyard Yankee July 9th, 2011 at 9:53 am

Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 8:04 am

Hope the G-Men are laying the ground work to improve their hitting.
