Jeter skipping the all-star game

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 08, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Derek Jeter said he’s not going to the all-star game. He’d rather take it easy.

Three other notes:

- Alex Rodriguez is going for an MRI on his right knee. The Yankees are calling it precautionary.

- Nick Swisher’s quad is bothering him, and he might miss a day or two. No tests scheduled.

- Brian Gordon was released so that he can sign in Korea.

That sucks about Gordon, but the Yankees didn’t have any plans for him.

Hopefully all goes well w/Alex’s MRI.

Obliques, lats, gluts, quads, concussions, hangnails, butt aches, toe hurts, finger sprains the list just goes on and on and on. Bunch a candy as*es.

Those were the good old days, tearing your pants and having a ‘strawberry’, too simple, huh ?

  10. Erin July 8th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

Ledger_Yankees ARod getting the MRI now.

JackCurryYES By the way, Girardi just called Gardner “Brett” and it sounded odd. Quickly returned to calling him “Gardy.”

  11. sammiejohnson July 8th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

I agree with those saying that Yankees players should skip the ASG and rest up for the second half. But I think that in Derek’s case it may well be different. In all honesty, and I am not at all trying to be negitive, this may possibly be the last chance he gets to play in an ASG.

  12. Captain Clutch July 8th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

If Arod was so banged up then why wasn’t be DHing more? Does it all go back to Posada’s hissy fit and Girardi is scared to tell him he is sitting so Arod can DH some days?! It doesn’t make sense why Arod was playing 3rd base everyday.

  13. Erin July 8th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

JackCurryYES Girardi said ARod’s power drought could definitely be influenced by the right knee injury. Said, “we haven’t seen the home runs.”

  14. Vineyard Yankee July 8th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Good for Jeter, he shouldn’t be there anyway. He can stay home now and get some ‘extra rest’ for his calf.

    VY,
There was nothing better than to bleed through your pants and having to do it all over again during the same game. If you werent bleeding, you werent getting on base.

About all those pulls. Its time for all baseball players to do polates and Yoga. Its just insane
to see professional athletes go on the dl for sneazing(see sosa).

BTW, i just found out yesterday from some here that you can say the word ASS in here and it wont get caught in the filters. Its only taken me 5 years to figure this out. Thought you might want to know sooner.

  19. vinslol July 8th, 2011 at 4:18 pm

no reason girardi couldn’t have tried to play tex at 3rd and sado at 1st/arod dh some days.

We’re pretty much the only team that NEVER puts players out of position. They all played other positions at some point, sometimes its worth a risk

  20. Erin July 8th, 2011 at 4:18 pm

    Shame-are you going tonight?

  21. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2011 at 4:18 pm

    blake

    Yeah, the batting eye(s). ;)

  22. Joe from Long Island July 8th, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Jeers – that sums it up fairly well.

Good for Brian Gordon. Hope he makes some good money for his family.

The more I think about it, the more I think they should seriously look into getting a bat. Alex’ situation is not unexpected. He’s 35 years old, and it’s a long season. Guys get banged up. But, taken in context to what was discussed earlier today, about their difficulties scoring late, and with RISP, you can’t go into September and beyond with those as active issues.

Getting Carlos Beltran could solve their DH/4th OF problem very nicely. Yeah, he’s got the injury history, but he’s been playing RF regularly without a problem, and that’s the proof you need that he’s OK. That move, plus bring up Montero for Cervelli and see what punch he brings. I know that leaves Posada in the lurch, but, you have to have production. The time for patience is ending, I think.

I know, easier said than done.

  23. Vineyard Yankee July 8th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Of course ARod’s power outage is affected by his knee, he needs to use his legs to generate power and drive the ball. Girardi is a brilliant guy.

  24. tampayank July 8th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Jeter didn’t deserve to be an All Star anyway

  25. Abomb82 July 8th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

  27. blake July 8th, 2011 at 4:20 pm

  28. Shame Spencer July 8th, 2011 at 4:20 pm

  29. tampayank July 8th, 2011 at 4:21 pm

    Shame- :(

Make sure to bring your umbrella!!

  31. LockDown July 8th, 2011 at 4:22 pm

I agree that A-rod should have been DHing more just by watching him run with a hitch. I do think it has to do with giving Posada more playing time, which is also why I think they won’t bring up Montero to replace cervelli.

  32. Erin July 8th, 2011 at 4:22 pm

The good old days, tear the pants, bleed, then somehow do the same thing again the same day in the same spot. Kicker was to go home and hide your pants so Mom couldn’t wash them and you could wear them the next day with the battle stains and scars still on them. :-)

  35. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2011 at 4:23 pm

They definitely need a bat that can also play the OF.

The problem is, there is no way Boras would allow Beltran to waive his NTC to come here unless he was going to be an everyday player. Nor should he be – he has a .880 OPS.

Beltran would be ideal but whose spot is he taking in the lineup? He isn’t going to agree to come here in his contact year to be a spare part.

I suppose they could alternate between Swisher/Gardner/Posada and make him close to an everyday player, if he is interested in that.

Yankees could really use another power hitting corner OF’er to replace Jones, and a return to pre-injury of Eric Chavez to spell A-Rod and Tex.

While Beltran might be a good option, I wouldn’t mind FA righty Michael Cuddyer, who came up as 3rd baseman, has played 2nd and 1st this year as well as his usual position of RF.

The point is Girardi sits players like A-Rod at the drop of a hat if there is even the slightest possibility he is harboring an injury. He didn’t sit him; there was no injury, he had a slightly sore knee that the Yankee training and medical staff said would not get any worse playing. Normal aches and pains.

If they were wrong and he is injured now. That’s entirely different.

  81. Jerkface July 8th, 2011 at 4:49 pm

You can’t compare anything to the 90s teams. They had everything but it was a different time. The Yankees were coming off of futility so they had some good position players coming up, they still spent more than everyone but it was a different climate and FA were cheaper, and they pretty much had a golden touch on everything working out. They had power, speed, pitching, and the greatest reliever of all time in his prime. I guess if you wanted to compare the 90s teams had better up the middle play and pitching with a better chance of dominating.

The 09 team had a good bullpen and one of the best offenses of the 2000s. Nearly 20+ HRs from every position on the field and CC, AJ, Pettitte was just great enough to get by with a dreadful 4-5 situation at the end of the season.

I like this team, but I’d try to get 1 more bat to help rotate through the OF and DH (BELTRAN) and bring up Montero to try and spark C, and I’d play Nunez more at SS & 3B.
I think they can have a decent playoff rotation with CC, Colon, AJ, Hughes, Nova, and Garcia being available. If they can get an upgrade, even if its small, they should go for it.

“The point is Girardi sits players like A-Rod at the drop of a hat if there is even the slightest possibility he is harboring an injury”

Here’s the point: He goes on reported pain. Players often don’t know if they are hurting or more seriously injured, but they are warriors, so they want to play.

But just because they are playing, it doesn’t mean they aren’t injured.

  86. Laura - I Bleed Blue July 8th, 2011 at 4:51 pm

The chance for aggravating the injury doesn’t matter in this context, since your original stupid remark was that the injury was not affecting A-rod. He is injured enough that it is affecting his power, but not injured enough to require sitting. And the yankees might be conservative with injuries but that doesn’t ring true when plenty of Yankees have played through or tried to play through injuries over the years. The Yankees will always see if a player can play through it before DLing. Maybe if the Yankees were in a comfortable 1st place they would have DLed A-rod, but they weren’t and he wasn’t going to make it worse so they let him play through it, and it affected him.

But just because they are playing, it doesn’t mean they aren’t injured.

    ************

I will repeat. A-Rod disclosed his knee was sore. The Yankees after consulting with their medical staff kept playing him. It was determined he was not injured and this is credible to me because anyone who has been following the Yankees knows that they are extremely conservative when it comes to injuries. They err on the side of caution. Especially with A-Rod.

  96. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Vazquez was very good in 2009. He had a 143 ERA+.

  97. SoS July 8th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

    GB7,
Very funny… but bad. Now go watch it. Its on TV every other month.

  98. Howard July 8th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Howie, I just have no use for trolls.

Who’s a troll? I’ve agreed with you for months and months on several issues…I think it’s just lately that you’ve taken some kind of stupid pill or something.
I’m sorry that everyone who doesn’t agree with the almighty “greenberet7″ is deemed a troll, a stat nerd, or some other offensive slang he can use behind the safety of his keyboard.
    You’re awesome.

  99. pat July 8th, 2011 at 4:56 pm

“He didn’t sit him; there was no injury”

Or there was an injury, no DH and no Jeter so he tried to play through it.

  100. Jerkface July 8th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

It was determined he was not injured

It was determined that he was injured but with little chance to make it worse.

  101. Tom in N.J. July 8th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Playing hurt and playing injured are two different things.

  102. Laura - I Bleed Blue July 8th, 2011 at 4:58 pm

WCYF has a lot of hate for Alex. Alex could come on the field in a full body cast and West Coast would say he’s fit to play. :P

So what? Things are not nearly as black and white as you would like to think.

Their doctors are not seers. Diagnoses are often best guesses which are largely dependent on the patient’s reported pain. So it’s not about conservatism, but the limits of what is known about a patient’s physical state at any point in time.

  104. have a cigar July 8th, 2011 at 4:58 pm

Unbeknownst to Gordon, the Yankees actually sold him to the Pyongyang Reds.

Hopefully he’s not a big fan of electricity…or food.

  110. Jerkface July 8th, 2011 at 5:00 pm

  111. Yankee Trader July 8th, 2011 at 5:01 pm

    Jerkface-

Does the quality of pitching the Yankees face, from starters thru relievers this year account for the “perceived” notion that the Yankees are ranked in the bottom 3rd in scoring from the 7th inning on? The Yankees this year, seem to be unable to sustain late inning rallies and lack in come from behind late inning wins-YET they are within mere % points of the best record in all of baseball!!

  112. Erin July 8th, 2011 at 5:01 pm

Matt_Fortuna #Yankees announce A-Rod will not go to the All-Star Game. With Mo and Jeter out as well, looks like Phoenix is No Country for Old Men.

  113. West Coast Yankee Fan July 8th, 2011 at 5:02 pm

As I said Rich, if the doctors were wrong or he hurt himself after that’s a different story.

    Who’s next? I say it’s Martin.

  116. GreenBeret7 July 8th, 2011 at 5:03 pm

Good that the Yankees are staying out of the ASG. I wonder how long platelet enrichment takes before there is a positive affect? “Calling Doctor Bombay.”

  117. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2011 at 5:03 pm

“As I said Rich, if the doctors were wrong or he hurt himself after that’s a different story.”

It’s not that they are necessarily wrong or right. It’s that they offer the best diagnosis they can with the information they have, but that the information is necessarily limited.

Are you sure, WCYF? I’ve read some of your posts and it doesn’t sound like you’re supportive of Alex. You’re a fan of his, yet you refuse to concede that he’s been playing injured. That’s not what someone does when they are a fan of a baseball player. You also frequently bring up that he’s a former user. That’s not something we’re likely to forget so I’m not sure why you feel the need to mention it.

  120. Yankee Trader July 8th, 2011 at 5:06 pm

    Rich-

Vazquez was very good for the Braves in 2009. Can you think of any pitchers who pitched for the Braves and were either signed subsequently by the Yankees or traded to them that did well as a Yankee, other than Mike Stanton?

  121. Howard July 8th, 2011 at 5:06 pm

Not sure what name you were using, but, until yesterday, never saw Howie on here

I’ve been Howard since probably March, but unike you, I’m not here everyday trying to force everyone to think what I think. I get on when I can, comment some, and get back off. Search the archives, if you’d like.

  122. Laura - I Bleed Blue July 8th, 2011 at 5:07 pm

Jeter, Mo and Alex sitting out the ASG? Those TV ratings are sinking like a lead weight.

  123. Jerkface July 8th, 2011 at 5:08 pm

If the game is rained out are they going to do a double header? I hope they don’t DH Jeter in one of the DHers just to get him a shot at 3000. Though it would be disappointing if I finished reading A Dance with Dragons before Jeter collected 3000 hits. A year ago I’d tell you that would be an impossibility.

Yes I am sure. I want every Yankee to do well. But thanks for defining what a fan is for me. I gave a logical argument as to why I didn’t consider A-Rod injured; and as to the steroid use, he did steroids and that is relevant to me when discussing age and injuries.

  125. pat July 8th, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Doubleheader is a good possibility tomorrow as it’s supposed to be totally clear and dry. It’s also not a FOX game which never gets moved. I would assume tonight’s tix holders get 1st game @ 1:00 and tomorrow holder get the 2nd game @ 7:00

  131. Yankee Trader July 8th, 2011 at 5:14 pm

    GB-

Just got off the phone with Dr Bombay.

Dr. Joseph Purita assisted with Colon’s treatment and had this to say:

Purita said that once the procedure was done — it lasted roughly 45 minutes, he said — the results were evident.

“We had him start working out within the first month,” Purita said. “Then I am hearing that he is starting to pitch, and then I hear that he is starting to tear them up in the Dominican league. But I said with a rotator cuff tear and a bad elbow, I don’t know about him getting back into the majors.”

Colon was pitching for a Dominican winter ball team managed by Tony Pena, the longtime Yankee coach. Eventually, the Yankees signed him to a contract for $900,000, a relative bargain.

  134. Captain Clutch July 8th, 2011 at 5:16 pm

The Yanks are definitely going to wait all night to try and play this game tonight. Considering the fact that Jeter just come off the DL I don’t think they want him playing in 2 games tomorrow. Even if he is DHing in one of them. Then again they want the hit at home and with Price and Shields on deck it’s possible that 2 hits against them won’t happen. So they probably would let him play in 2 games of a double header.

So all the fuss about Gordon and he barely makes a dent with the team…………..

This team is the walking wounded – the ASB is coming at the right time. The only reason to watch now is for Granderson………

I just spit my water on the screen. Funnier story. My 12 year old boy sent me a text picture of my 7 year old boy holding up my 10 year old red thongs. Try to explain that to them. Wife told them that we adults get funny stuff sometimes and forget to throw them away. Their response, at least the thongs look zipper proof.
