Reminder: LoHud Yankees Blog Outing

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 08, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Just wanted to post a quick reminder that our friend Ron is planning a LoHud Yankees Blog Outing for later this month at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s PNC Field. If you missed Ron’s invitation earlier this week, here it is again. Should be a great time, so shoot him an email.

Also, check out my friend Jeff Passan’s piece on the Rangers fan who fell to his death last night. It’s a well written story about fathers and sons.

Here’s Ron’s letter.

For those interested, I’m happy to again organize the LoHud Yankees Blog group outing for 2011 to see a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees game later this summer at PNC Field, just off I-81 in Moosic, PA. In 2008 and 2009 we had over 80 blog readers, family and friends attend the outing each year. I think those who attended would agree it was a great time! I was late getting organized in 2010 and we were unable to get together.

The 2011 LoHud Yankees Blog outing will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 7:05 PM when the SWB Yankees will take on the Syracuse Chiefs, AAA affiliate of the Washington Nationals. There will also be post-game fireworks that night, which from much personal experience I can say are very good. For those interested, the series with Syracuse is part of a four-game homestand beginning Friday at 7:05 PM through Monday at 7:05 PM including a 1:05 PM Sunday start. You can contact the SWB Yankees box office at (570) 969-BALL (2255) for additional tickets.

For those who are unfamiliar, PNC Field is about 60 miles from Binghamton, 100 miles from Newark, 110 miles from Philadelphia, 120 miles from NYC and 130 miles from State College.

The group venue for this year’s outing will be the Third Base Party Box. The cost per person — including game ticket and all you can eat hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, soda, water, beans/pasta salad and an SWB Yankees cap and program — is approximately $32 – $35.

At this point I’m uncertain if Chad Jennings will be able to attend, but hopefully he can join us.

I’d ask anyone interested in the outing to e-mail me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE at yankslifer@yahoo.com with number of tickets you’re interested in. I’ll invoice those interested through PayPal which has worked well in the past.

In prior years, a number of people from New York, New Jersey, Maryland and even Virginia came to the outing. Later, via e-mail, I’ll provide driving directions and links to hotels and restaurants in the area for those attending.

Thanks to Chad for posting this.

Ron

Nice of Ron to put this together.

    Chad -

Is Dave Walsh still at SWB?

  3. Erin July 8th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Chad-thanks for the link. What an awful thing to happen. I can’t even imagine what Hamilton must be going through today.

    Wish I could go!

Hassey, is the nude beach still there?

It’s kind of far from Bergen County.

Passan’s piece brought a tear to my eye; beautifully written. What a senseless tragedy.

Gunnison Beach, at Sandy Hook is still around.

  8. tomingeorgia July 8th, 2011 at 12:55 pm

Thanks, Tom in NJ. Always added to the fishing experience in and around Raritan Bay.

  9. Chip July 8th, 2011 at 12:56 pm

    Two potential Yankee trades:

Royals get: Kevin Whalen & Damon Sublett

    Yankees get: Alex Gordon

    Nationals get: Greg Golson

    Yankees get: Tom Gorzolanny

  10. BIG AL July 8th, 2011 at 1:00 pm

    Rich in NJ -

You can make it from Bergen County to SWB in 1 hr 45 min easy. Take the NY Thruway to Route 17 (the quick way) to Route 84W, to Route 81S. It’s right off Route 81S, an easy drive.

  11. Tom in N.J. July 8th, 2011 at 1:00 pm

“Always added to the fishing experience in and around Raritan Bay”

Yeah, one summer, I decided I was going to run every day at sandy hook. The first time I ran onto gunnison, I thought I was suffering from heat stroke. The last thing you expect to see while jogging is a bunch of naked people…

  12. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Why would the Royals do that?

  13. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2011 at 1:01 pm

That’s a long drive for me, Big Al!!!

  14. BIG AL July 8th, 2011 at 1:03 pm

    Rich -

I did it every day, for 24 years. I lived in NE PA, and worked in Bergen County. A 102 mile trip each way, 5 days a week. Thank God I don’t do that any more.

  15. Tom in N.J. July 8th, 2011 at 1:03 pm

I doubt the Royals would give up on Gordon now that he’s finally hitting.

    ——————

I don’t know. Yankees would likely have to include a better prospect.

I should have just stuck with the targets rather than specific players going the other way.

Gordon would be a nice addition to the bench – sort of a more versitile version of Eric Chavez. Gorzo has had a nice year for the Nats but I think he would be fantastic in the pen taking Logan’s spot against LHP.

Are you talking about the Jersey Girls?

  20. Chip July 8th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

And – as I said the other day – LGY’s dream could come true. If the Twins don’t make a push this month I could see the Yankees making a play for Jim Thome for the stretch.

TylerKepner Randy Choate 3 up, 3 down last night, 0.98 ERA for last-place FLA. Lefties are 5 for 50. Yanks would be smart to trade for him.

    ————–

And he was signed for a million bucks on a 1 yr deal. Those are the types of bargains to look for, not paying an overused LOOGY $4 mil a year for multiple years.

    —————–

Probably true too. That’s why my particular choice would be Gordon.

Actually my choice is Mike Morse of the Nats but I get the sense he would probably be more expensive than Gordon.

  26. heyman_sux July 8th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

I wouldn’t hold my breath on the Nats parting ways with Morse…I mean why would they? And he’s not worth trading top prospects if he’ll be used as a bench player. Come to think of it, neither would Gordon

  27. GreenBeret7 July 8th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Why is KC willing to trade their starting left fielder for hal a barrel of monkey nuts? And why would the Yanks trade for a pitcher that isn’t as good as the pitcher they just sent to the minors or the one working out of the pen? Because he’s left handed? Because his name is hard to spell? Because he had a good season 4 years ago?

  28. GreenBeret7 July 8th, 2011 at 1:17 pm

left fielder for ***half*** a barrel

  29. Tom in N.J. July 8th, 2011 at 1:18 pm

Michael Cuddyer, he’s played inf/of this year. Plus he can hit a little. He’s a FA at the end of the year. MLBTR has him as a type A right now. Maybe the Yankees can trade for him, offer him arb and get 2 picks for him later, who knows?

    ————

My guess is that the Yankees would be looking for a LH bat to fill that Chavez role…they have Jones from the right side. But Cuddyer’s not a bad option.

Other options I would think include:

    Brad Hawpe (SD)
    Laynce Nix (Was)
    Rick Ankiel (Was)
    Casey Blake (LAD)

I’m sure there are other obvious ones I’m forgetting.

  33. GreenBeret7 July 8th, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Of course there is that pesky 1.6 homers per 9 innings to work around. No thanks. The Yanks still have better starters than that.

John Sterling’s radio call of Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit likely will be replayed forever, but he said before Thursday night’s game that he has not scripted any comments in advance.
“I prefer, like at the end of a World Series, to feel something,” he said before Jeter doubled in the first inning for his 2,998th hit. “But I’ll do something very quick about what Jeter has accomplished. I’m trying not to think about it in advance — trying not to.”

    I’m expecting high comedy.

  48. 86w183 July 8th, 2011 at 1:42 pm

    That’s awesome Tom !

    Sterling:

“It’s a line drive to right field for a base hit, a Jeterrific lline drive for his 3,000th hit…. yet the Stadium is strangely subdued.”

    Suzyn sniffles:

“John, that’s because they just called it foul, like the foul decision you’d be making not to get your next car at one of your Tri-State Ford Dealers.”

Sterling: “No it wasn’t foul, he’s standing on first base”

Suzyn: “No John that’s Eduardo Nunez, not to be confused with the Eduardo Nunez who manages the WB Mason in Paramis.”

Sterling: “Base hit to center field and that’ll bring up Granderson… what’s with all the noise? the fans are strangely excited.”

  49. Betsy July 8th, 2011 at 1:43 pm

Tex’s comments about the scouting causing his low BA are silly – he’s supposed to adjust. It’s hard to believe he’s now a .240′s type hitter – this is 2 years in a row that his BA has been low, so it’s not a fluke.

    Intl FA signing updates:

So far, nothing to report today on the top 40 FAs. This is getting somewhat frustrating. Rangers, Cubs, Indians, and Blue Jays have been very aggressive, but the Yankees so far have announced only 1 signing, and 2 of the prospects they were interested in have signed elsewhere–one with Red Sox.

    WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE?!?!?!

  59. Betsy July 8th, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Oh wow, this just puts everything in perspective – sorry, I don’t have a link.

The visitor’s bullpen at the stadium is in left-center field. Athletics reliever Brad Ziegler was in tears after the game when he found out the man had died.
“They had him on a stretcher. He said, ‘Please check on my son. My son was up there by himself.’ The people who carried him out reassured him. ‘Sir, we’ll get your son, we’ll make sure he’s OK,’” Ziegler said. “He had his arms swinging. He talked and was conscious. We assumed he was OK. But when you find out he’s not, it’s just tough.”

They might, although I just don’t know enough about the process. If Cash wanted to sign players but was denied money, that’s a problem. If he thought that they weren’t good values and wants to sign more guys they drafted to overslot contracts with the money available, then it’s not.

  67. austinmac July 8th, 2011 at 2:00 pm

    Bojo and Rich,

I do think their may be budget issues. Real attendance is down. Their was no buzz about the team coming into the year, and I suspect related income may be down. One would think without a first round pick to cost $4-5M they would add that to the international budget. It is not happening.

We shall see if budgetary issues affect TD moves or a lack thereof. Their best TD moves have typically been money related.

  68. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

That’s true, Mell, and it’s smart for them because they can’t afford the top tier professional free agents, so this is a way to get high ceiling talent more cheaply, which makes me wonder if Cash thinks they are over valued because the Yankees could blow away any offer if they wanted.

  69. BoJo July 8th, 2011 at 2:02 pm

It’s not like these kids are using scholarships to UCLA as bargaining chips. The ceiling has been set by the top few picks, and there are some good prospects left (Like the son of Raul Mondesi).

I presume they have figured out by now who they like, and should have made bids…I don’t think there is any delay due to birth certificate validation as I presume this is now done prior to July 2….

Can’t figure it out….maybe Chad could provide an update by asking Mark Newman.

I will say this…looking at their videos, it is like watching high school freshmen or sophmores and trying to guess who will be a star in 6 to 8 years…very much a crap shoot.

But I think players who are sons of professional baseball players should be as near a no-brainer as can be.

  72. Mell July 8th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

which makes me wonder if Cash thinks they are over valued because the Yankees could blow away any offer if they wanted

    ==========================

Could be an element of this as well. Most of these kids are at an age that puts them at sophomore or junior year of high school in the States. Tons of projection involved obviously and my guess is the percentage kids who get these sizable bonuses and actually go on to enjoy a solid major league career is probably quite low.

  73. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

“I will say this…looking at their videos, it is like watching high school freshmen or sophmores and trying to guess who will be a star in 6 to 8 years…very much a crap shoot.”

To a degree, but it’s what talent evaluators do for a living and have years of experience projecting subsequent performance based on skillsets and athleticism.

“But I think players who are sons of professional baseball players should be as near a no-brainer as can be.”

It gets you noticed, but regression to the mean is a real phenomenon.

  75. BoJo July 8th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

What seems very short-sighted to me however is that IIRC, the next CBA may reign in Intl FA signings, and create a draft for these players. If so, that eliminates one of the potential competitive advantages the Yankees used to have, and they should have signed as many players as possible in this last year of an open market.

  77. G. Love July 8th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Until Tex begins to hit for average again he will be Giambi the sequel with better defense. The Yankees and their 180+ million didn’t sign up for that this early in his contract.

He’s a productive player, but the fact that once he put on the pinstripes his batting average has plummeted rapidly is very concerning. At first the excuse was it’s too early in the season. Now it’s the defensive alignments.

Well if defensive alignment is taking away the ability to do your job consistently logic would be to hit away from the alignment and increase your opportunity to get hits until they shift back reopening the holes you need.

The guy is a very good player, but the Yankees signed him to be a cornerstone guy who could carry this team as Arod, Jeter, etc. aged their way out of those roles.

If you were to honestly rank 1b in the game right now where would you put him?

  88. SoS July 8th, 2011 at 2:25 pm

    Erin,
I was 12 as well. My story is linked to Boston. I was an Angels fan and was crushed/dissapointed by the 86 ALCS where the went on to blow a 3-1 series lead. I was going to that world series. The worst part about it is they absolutely quit after Donnie Moore gave up that homerun. That was the tipping point for me. It was easy to jump on the Yankees bandwagon being that my favorite player was Don Mattingly.

  92. G. Love July 8th, 2011 at 2:28 pm

I’d rank Pujols, Gonzalez, Cabrera, Votto & Prince before Tex in 1b. I know a case can be made for Konerko, but I’d rather have Tex than him. What’s crazy is that 2 of the top 6 are available for just money this off season and we really can’t bid on them.

Tex needs to step it up.Between not being named to the all star team by the fans or his peers and his average getting close to the .230′s in July, I hope he takes the ASB to get himself back to being a one man wrecking crew for this team again.

  93. Mell July 8th, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Well if defensive alignment is taking away the ability to do your job consistently logic would be to hit away from the alignment and increase your opportunity to get hits until they shift back reopening the holes you need.

    =============================

Ortiz faces the same shift Teixeira does. In looking at his numbers, he did see his average suffer (.304 from 2004-07, down to .258 from 2008-10), but is back up to .300 this year. Anyone see enough of him to know what, if any, adjustments he’s made?

I was born a Yankees fan in the 70′s. My Mother was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan who when they left became a Yankees fan and my Dad was always a Yankee fan. I flirted briefly with the Mets in 1986 when I was a little kid but I was still die hard Yankees fan. The Mets were just fun to watch then and I don’t remember me as a child feeling I had to hate them if I was a Yankee fan. I liked Cone, Gooden, Straw so it’s pretty funny they all later became Yankees. I also loved Sid Fernandez for some reason, lol.

Growing up though I was all Yankees. Nettles was my guy I keyed on at first. I had a 9 t-shirt with his name on it.

    ___________________________

In just the AL, I would say that (this season at least) Tex would have to rank behind both Gonzalez and Cabrera. Then in the NL you have some pretty good 1B in Pujols (obviously), Howard, and Fielder. So if I were ranking Tex in all of MLB 1B, I would have to say probably 5th or 6th. And yes, you are right. I do not think that 5th or 6th is what the Yankees had in mind when they signed him.

I considered this, but can’t really see how it beats the shift, aside from occasionally hitting over it.

  106. G. Love July 8th, 2011 at 2:36 pm

    Mell,

I attribute Ortiz’s decline against the shift to be a bat speed thing. He couldn’t catch up to the hard stuff for awhile there. Suddenly, he’s able to handle heat again. His bat has sped up. Not to 2004 levels, but to a better level than he was prior to this.

My theory on Tex is he’s swinging for that RF wall boom or bust. The fine art of taking a pitch the other way or hitting it where it’s thrown is not something he is doing. He’s mashing. It almost looks like a brainless approach at times which isn’t fair since he’s a smart guy with a great idea of the strike zone.

The O’s are the Brewers Via the St. louis Browns:

The Baltimore Orioles are a professional baseball team based in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States. They are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. One of the American League’s eight charter franchises in 1901, it spent its first year as a major league club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the Milwaukee Brewers before moving to St. Louis to become the St. Louis Browns. After 52 mostly hapless years in St. Louis, the Browns moved to Baltimore in 1954 and adopted the Orioles name in honor of the official state bird of Maryland. The Orioles name had been used by previous major league baseball clubs in Baltimore, including the American League Baltimore Orioles franchise from 1901–1902 that became the New York Yankees…

“[ Because her eyes are wide open and her heart is even wider. ]

    [ Because she's smart and undaunted. ]

[ Because she's got Veeck vision, through and through. ]

Rebecca may be losing her eyesight, but don’t doubt her vision. This sparky 19-year-old sees a bold and ambitious future, for herself and others with visual or physical challenges. “I do everything any teenager can do. I dance—I love to dance—ride horses, babysit, I know CPR, I travel by myself. Listen, hey, don’t worry about blind kids, we can get into as much trouble as other kids!” she laughs. Despite being diagnosed with a degenerative and incurable eye disorder at age seven, Rebecca has always looked on the bright side, and comes by it naturally.

Granddaughter of hall-of-famer Bill Veeck, baseball’s legendary promoter, and daughter of Mike, a.k.a. “Fun is Good,” who’s turned Charleston RiverDogs games into the liveliest show in town, Bec’s got show biz in her blood. The recent Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind grad is looking to college, then after that, maybe a career in theater or in communications. “I want to help others any way I can. Oh, and have fun. We don’t need to be in a rat race. Always have fun.”

I still remember when he retired and moved from Queens out to eastern LI. We would watch games together but frequently the reception out there was so bad we would have to sit close to the TV and watch the games through white fuzz on the screen. He had one of those rotating antenna things and we would constantly be turning the dial to rotate to try to get the games to come in better. Those were the days! :)

Teixera’s LH swing virtually doesn’t allow him to hit the ball on the ground the other way…..or it would be very difficult and he would have to swing unnaturally to do so. He could bunt or slash the ball that way….but he can’t really do it and swing normally from that side. His LH swing is going to be a problem as he ages if he doesn’t make some adjustments IMO.

SoS, I’ve owned a home in Georgia for about 30 years, but I was born and raised in Michigan. I was about 6 years old when we got our first TV and my dad was watching the ballgame with my grandfather, who was a White Sox and Cards fan. My dad was a Tigers fan and hated the Yanks, as did everyone else. My first experience in watching baseball and natually, Mantle hit a home run to beat the Tigers and it caused a certain reaction from the old man…letting loose with a colorful description of Mantle. Pop was into colors I guess because he was red. When I decided that I liked the color and Pop’s flowery prose, I repeated it. Pop proceded to turn another shade of red and showed me the hazards of using the wrong words.

Still, I did like seeing my dad changing colors and I associated this with Mantle and the Yankees. To make my dad happy, I became a Yankee fan. It was years later that he told me that I was a little mixed up in my beliefs…that he hated the Yankees.

If that’s his swing how does Tex make that adjustment? It would seem he would have to rebuild his swing from scratch and I doubt a guy making his kind of coin would even consider that.

It’s a shame because he’s a good guy and a good player, but he needs to get more hits while he’s still in his prime to help this team pick up the slack for the age related decliners.

    Chip,

Yes, but he’s 31…..how is that little margin of error going to play when he’s 33 or 34 and the physical ability starts to slip?

    G. Love,

Yea I don’t think he could totally rebuild it….but he could work on reducing some of hit pre pitch movement and flattening his swing plane a bit. He is in and out of the zone so quickly that he has very little margin for error on pitches with movement. He could overcome those things when he was in his prime…..it will be increasingly more difficult to do so as he ages.

  143. SoS July 8th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

    GLove,
Would things be different today if the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn? Any chance you would have sided with your mom?

Speaking of Brooklyn. Last weekend the Angels were playing the Dodgers(i believe) and there was some fans on the radio ticked that the Dodgers were going to go retro and wear their B caps which they thought stood for bankrupt and let the Angels wear the LA caps. They thought that the rest of the country would think they were the REAL Los Angeles team.
IMO, i dont understand how baseball allows the Angels to be something their not. Whats next? The Mets claiming theyre the team from New York.
