TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m., YES Network and MLB Network

WEATHER: The rain has gone away, that’s for sure. It’s hot and sunny here in the Bronx.

UMPIRES: HP Jim Wolf, 1B Ron Kulpa, 2B Gary Cederstrom, 3B Derryl Cousins

UNDER THE SUN: Another day game for the Yankees, and that should be a good thing. The Yankees are a Major League-best 24-5 in day games this season. They’re hitting .280 and have a 2.73 team ERA under the sunshine.

CANO AT THE BREAK: Two days before the all-star break, Robinson Cano has 21 doubles, five triples and 15 homers. According to Elias, the last player to have at least 20, 5 and 15 before the all-star break was Jimmy Rollins in 2007 — his MVP year — and the only Yankees to have those totals at the break were Lou Gehrig in 1936 and Joe DiMaggio in 1941.

NOT SURE YOU HEARD ABOUT THIS: Derek Jeter is two hits away from 3,000 for his career. He has a hit in 18 of his past 21 games.

HE FEELS YOUR PAIN: In a strange coincidence, the Braves announced today that their own veteran third baseman, Chipper Jones, will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus that’s bothered him all season. Jones had been playing through the injury, but the pain became unmanageable.

UPDATE, 1:11 p.m.: Burnett sends the side down in order in the first inning. Up next, Derek Jeter’s for at-bat No. 1.

UPDATE, 1:14 p.m.: Huge ovation for Jeter’s first at-bat. Now the two sides of the stadium are trying to get in sync for their “De-rek Je-ter” chant.

UPDATE, 1:17 p.m.: I’m really not sure how much louder this place can get. Nice first AB, shoots a bouncing single through the left side of the infield and just like that, Jeter’s one away from 3,000.

UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: Matt Joyce is really having a great year, and he just took Burnett deep — really deep — to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead with two outs in the second. That homer gives Joyce a career-high 12 for the season.

UPDATE, 1:53 p.m.: Burnett worked another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third, and Jeter will get his first chance at 3,000 here in the bottom half of the inning. Brett Gardner will lead off, then it’s The Captain’s turn.

UPDATE, 1:55 p.m.: Gardner couldn’t help himself. Headfirst slide into first base and he’s out, bringing up Jeter.

UPDATE, 1:59 p.m.: Only Jeter. Home run to left for No. 3,000. Unreal. First one to greet him at the plate was Posada, who practically crushed him with a bear hug. The Rays are out of the dugout applauding, led by Damon.

UPDATE, 2:03 p.m.: When Jeter came out for his curtain call, he waved to the fans, then waved and pointed to the mound as if apologizing to David Price for the delay. Then Jeter turned to his parents’ luxury box and held his fist in the air. The video board showed a series of pictures of every member of the 3,000 hit club before finally cutting to a picture of Jeter with the No. 3,000. Really amazing moment.

UPDATE, 2:06 p.m.: Jeter’s first home home run since July 22, 2010, snapping a streak of 286 at-bats without one. Seriously, this guy knows how to reach a milestone.

UPDATE, 2:14 p.m.: The Yankees have a 2-1 lead after Russell Martin’s RBI single, and as the team took the field for the top of the fourth, the video board showed a series of former and current Yankees talking 3,000. It ended with Andy Pettitte, obviously filmed at home in Texas, saying how proud he feels. Jeter was on the field watching the end of the video.

UPDATE, 2:23 p.m.: Immediately after tonight’s game, YES will air a special entitled JETER 3,000 that will include Jeter and Girardi’s postgame press conferences, as well as a sit-down interview between Jeter and Jack Curry. There will also be sound from various former teammates and others connected to Jeter.

UPDATE, 2:43 p.m.: Jeter is now a hit away from the cycle. He just doubled to leadoff the fifth inning, and both Reid Brignac and Sean Rodriguez made their way over to tell him congratulations.

UPDATE, 2:52 p.m.: Career hit No. 3,001 sparked a two-run fifth-inning that has the Yankees back in the lead, 4-3.

UPDATE, 3:54 p.m.: Dave Robertson has allowed the tying run in the eighth inning. It’s a 4-4 game, and the Yankees have only scored in innings when Jeter has had a hit. He’d be the third hitter in the bottom of the eighth.

UPDATE, 4:00 p.m.: Has Eduardo Nunez ever had a hit without his helmet falling off? His leadoff double in the eighth has the Yankees in scoring position with no outs and the game still tied at 4.

UPDATE, 4:04 p.m.: OK, this has gotten absurd. Jeter just tied his career high with five hits, and the fifth just drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. The Yankees have only scored in innings in which Jeter has a hit. He and Craig Biggio are the only players to ever reach 3,000 during a five-hit game. He and Wade Boggs are the only players to ever reach 3,000 with a home run. This is Jeter’s third career five-hit game.

UPDATE, 4:06 p.m.: Jeter’s the first player to ever get five hits in a game at the current Yankee Stadium. Of course he is.

I’m thinking about going to a Vermont Lake Monsters game tonight, and they’re facing the Staten Island Yankees. Other than Culver, who should I be keeping my eye on? Looks like Mitchell is pitching tonight.

  2. Crawdaddy July 9th, 2011 at 1:04 pm

    Williams and Gumbs.

  3. Salliedogs7 July 9th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Today could be the day. Go Jeter. Go Yanks.

  4. syd_cash July 9th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

i just want the Yanks to win a game, tired of this losing streak. Sidenote why is Price’s record so bad he having a bad year??

  5. yanks4ever July 9th, 2011 at 1:08 pm

I’m ready for Jeter to get his hits and ride into the sunset.

    Yankees play better without him!

  6. austinmac July 9th, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Beltran would be an enormous upgrade at DH. I like Jorge as well as the next fan, but I have supported the team since 1960. I am about the team winning not happy career endings.

He could DH, play RF and LF. I don’t see any argument against it especially in light of the huge hit the offense just took.

  7. Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

It’s a day game and it’s against a lefty, albeit one of the best. No worries the Yankees win and David Price is the culprit again as he was when Jeter broke the most hits in Yankee Stadium with a homer off Price.

David Price already gave up one historic hit to Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium.

Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits at Yankee Stadium with 1,269 by blasting a home run off Price in the Rays left-hander’s major league debut on Sept. 14, 2008

I’m not sure that I would want to put all chips on Nunez as our third baseman in October.
    ____
I have to presume Alex will be back by August….and our 3B in October.

As far as Nuney’s glove, yes it is a concern….but let’s see him a few games there before we conclude what he is. He may be better than he was at SS.

Look at it this way: We never replaced Chavez. It just wouldn’t be wise not to hedge our bets here.

half our team is all broken up looks like we can really use the All-Star break to get ready for the home stretch

  10. Captain Clutch July 9th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

I think it’s obvious that DH is going to be Arod’s new home sooner than anyone expected. If it will keep him healthy it makes sense to make the move when he comes back from the surgery.

  11. BoJo July 9th, 2011 at 1:12 pm

I’ve been pushing for Beltran since hot stove league, and hope Cashman changes his mind now that Alex is down.

I’m not going to say anything nice about how good AJ looks today, because every time I compliment the guy, he implodes. :)

  13. austinmac July 9th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Mora, Kouzmanoff or Blake. I hope not. They are unwanted by other teams for a very good reason–lack of production.

  16. Captain Clutch July 9th, 2011 at 1:15 pm

AJ is going to have to use his curveball and change up a lot today. The Rays are aggressive and looking for the fastball.

  17. GreenBeret7 July 9th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Burnett in the first inning had 4 great pitches going. Knuckle curve, fastball, change-up and a hard sinking fastball. Hopefully he can keep them all day

  18. syd_cash July 9th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

this has got to be nerve wrecking for Jeter…he prolly just wants to get it over with so he can move on.

  19. yanks4ever July 9th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

    That was his pitch.

  20. austinmac July 9th, 2011 at 1:17 pm

I wonder why there is such a dropoff after the first inning. Obviously, his high BA in the first is probably just a small sample outcome, but it does make me wonder…

  34. GreenBeret7 July 9th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

Jeter gets this #300 ut of the way and then 29 more to become the first ever to get to 3000 hits as a shortstop. 1 as a pinch hitter and 27 as a DH.

  35. Captain Clutch July 9th, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Even the suits were standing….that’s impressive.

  36. BoJo July 9th, 2011 at 1:24 pm

GW–Beltran can DH and bat 4th. I wonder if the old infielder Jorge Posada can play 3rd…he has shown a good glove at 1B, and of course had a good arm as C….I’d have him taking some grounders immediately.

    Woo him?

What will woo him is the chance to get another big paycheck. If he knows he is going to get ABs at YS, and also get to play-offs, he will gladly accept deal to the team he was ready to give a discount to.

The only one who needs to be wooed is Alderson so he makes a deal we can live with.

    =============

My point is that Beltran won’t be much of an upgrade over Swisher or Gardner, at the margin. Getting Beltran means sitting one of the two, and it does nothing to shore up the thinness at the corner infield slots. Getting Beltran might help the club a bit, but the rationale for doing so is independent of the third base situation.

  64. BoJo July 9th, 2011 at 1:38 pm

The more I think about it, the more interested I would be in seeing Posada try third base.

    GW–

Beltran could move Swisher to Dh and improve the RF defense. If Posada could play 3B (don’t know), then Alex’s offense would be replaced…When Alex gets back, Beltran’s benefit would come during play-offs where he seems to perform better than Swisher.

He was moved to catcher as a minor leaguer, in large measure because he was a terrible second/third baseman. I don’t think that Posada at third is a viable option.

  78. 86w183 July 9th, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Well Jorge is going to be 40 next month. He’s never played there in the majors, and the last time he played 3B was in the minor leagues it was 6 games, 7 errors.

Arguably the worst idea you (or anyone else) has ever come up with on this blog.

  83. austinmac July 9th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

    Ghostwriter,

First, I completely disagree he is not a significant upgrade over Gardner and Swisher. The stats are very different. He is also far better than Posada. Adding a crummy 3B isn’t a help. They need a significant bat., in my opinion. That said i see no reason to believe they will add much to payroll.

Arguably the worst idea you (or anyone else) has ever come up with on this blog.

    Ghost

Just to expand on that a little bit. The Yankees have a substantial lead over the whole league in scoring in the first and second inning. According to Jerk the team that leads after 2 wins 70 % of the time.

I don’t think enough importance is given to Jeter’s leading off a game stats.

  86. tomingeorgia July 9th, 2011 at 1:48 pm

    Lots of pitches for Price.

  87. TheStraw July 9th, 2011 at 1:48 pm

Nunez is not a significant upgrade over Jeter.

Sure..it makes much more sense to pay Ramirez $17M next year plus whatever this year, AND give up a prospect…and then have Ramirez sit most of the season and next year…than to try Posada (a former infielder) at 3B….Sure. If you say so.

  91. I Am Winning July 9th, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Nunez has tremendous raw batting capabilities but he still has a lot to learn.

That last AB was awful to watch. 1st pitch breaking ball was taken in the middle of the zone. Than swung at a pitch nearly in the dirt. Than hit an outside ball weekly to the middle infield.

He really does have great offensive potential, I’m just surprised the Yankees are allowing him to learn and grow at this level.

  98. ac1 July 9th, 2011 at 1:53 pm

if alex doesn’t go on the DL, they should consider moving him to #2 and Granderson to #4 or 5. Alex is still hitting close to .300, getting on base….
If the power is gone, let him get on base for Tex, Cano and Granderson.

    Jeter
    Alex
    Cano
    Tex
    Granderson

    could be the 1-5

  99. Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 1:53 pm

He was moved to catcher as a minor leaguer, in large measure because he was a terrible second/third baseman. I don’t think that Posada at third is a viable option.
    ___
We’re not talking about making him full-time 3B…we’re talking about increasing the flexibility of roster and seeing if he can play as well there as Cervelli or Martin or Nunez…so that he can split time with Nunez, and allow an acquisition like Beltran to get playing time–thus improving the offense.

I think it would be worth looking at.

Again, Wigginton and Cuddyer make a great deal of sense because they can and have played 3B and have the versatility to be extremely valuable in a utility role once/if Alex is healthy.

    austinmac July 9th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

    Ghostwriter,

First, I completely disagree he is not a significant upgrade over Gardner and Swisher. The stats are very different. He is also far better than Posada. Adding a crummy 3B isn’t a help. They need a significant bat., in my opinion. That said i see no reason to believe they will add much to payroll.
    ===================

Swisher is a career .823 OPS player and Beltran is a .854 has a career OPS player. How many additional hits, runs, home runs do you think that this translates into at the margin? Beltran is also much better than Swisher defensively. I agree that Beltran is a better player, and I prefer having him to Swisher. But I’m pretty sure that the additional production that Beltran brings isn’t worth what it will cost to get him.

I agree that adding a crummy third-base bat won’t help, but a solid average bat (Wiggy) will help. The Yanks don’t need a savior, and they don’t need a cleanup hitter. They need a solid 5-hole or 6-hole hitter.

Maybe someday he’ll be exterminated for good! Either that or when Casey Anthony gets out of jail maybe he’ll try to meet up with her – they say water seeks its own level.

Here’s hoping he disappears for good.

In the meantime, we’re with you guys in spirit.

    :)

Now back to the safe place.

Yes, the ball carries better in heat and thus power hitting teams have an advantage

  275. The Other Phil July 9th, 2011 at 2:36 pm

@austinmac: I was thinking the same thing. We always hear about the ball carrying better in day/heat, so it would make perfect sense. That ball really didn’t look like it would go but poof, there it went. Need to get some fly balls and see where they land.

    Jeet’s was a no doubter, tho. :)

  340. Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 2:54 pm

I’m posting the entire article about Price and Jeter’s milestone homer in 2008:
David Price already gave up one historic hit to Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium.

Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits at Yankee Stadium with 1,269 by blasting a home run off Price in the Rays left-hander’s major league debut on Sept. 14, 2008.

Today, Price again faces Jeter on the verge of a milestone, just two hits shy of 3,000.

“I have no intention of giving up hits to him or anyone else,” Price said before last night’s game was rained out.

But as long as it doesn’t cost Tampa Bay a run, Price could make peace.

“If he leads off with a single and doesn’t score, honestly, I’d probably be fine with that,” said Price, who lives near Jeter’s new mansion in Florida. “I would much rather see it live than on TV. It’s pretty special to be here right now with him about to be the only Yankee to accomplish that feat.”

And Price knows what he would do if he does surrender the historic hit to Jeter.

“Stand out there and wait for everyone to stop clapping, like I did last time,” he said.

I hate the Rays, but they’ve been really classy about Jeter’s milestones. I recall last year that the O’s (forgot what it was for) showed no interest……but of course, they probably took the cue from their classless manager

    ————————-

I thought it was a total lack of class on their part to unnecessarily walk Tex to keep him from winning the HR title that year. Maybe others have, but I’ve never seen anything like it, deliberately taking away an opposing player’s opportunity to lead the league in a category in order for their own teammate to benefit.

Price seems like a good guy. There is no shame in surrendering the milestone hits to Jeter. It isn’t like he gave up all 3,000 hits to him. Price is now linked inexorably with one of the all-time greats, which is not bad at all.

It’s actually damn near impossible to hit a walk off triple

The batter would have to reach 3B before the runner scored to be awarded a triple

Unless an outfielder threw his glove at the ball and hit it. That’s an automatic triple, but highly unlikely at the MLB level.

That guy is a fool for not selling the ball. It’s not nice, classy, honorable, or anything like that. These players always want to get “what they are worth” when they are looking for a contract, and get every last penny they can, or close to it (other benefits *to them* can sometimes be a factor). There would have been absolutely nothing wrong with a guy with incredibly less money than Jeter to get “what it was worth”. It would not have been “greedy”.

Nothing wrong if he wanted to sell it, but its cool that he didn’t. As a fan myself I could say that I would just ppl happy to meet the players and that would be enough for me to give the ball. Also it’s cool that he’ll always be the person that caught Jeter’s 3000th hit so now he is apart of baseball history as well. 452. 86w183 July 9th, 2011 at 3:27 pm

In essence he did “sell” the ball. He gets a bunch of free tickets to games that he might have paid to see or at least wanted to see. He gets dinner/lunch all of those days too.

I’m 53 and don’t need the cash. If I’m 23 and struggling to pay rent I’m not sure I owuld have been as reasonable.

  453. 86w183 July 9th, 2011 at 3:29 pm

If Alex can’t drive with his llower body he has no power. Thus the 25 or so games without a HR. The question comes down to whether a diminished Alex for 75 games is better than a healthy Alex for say 50 games.

It’s not an easy call either way. I’m sure he’d prefer to play through it, but I’m not sure that’s best for the team.

I hope Jeter gives the kid some money under the table, he certainly doesnt have to. But that young man may not want the money at 23 … but in 20 years he may need some cash to send his kids to college or … just to get by. They did give Sorriano 11 million … I think the Yankees would of found something for him.

Nice gesture, great day for the Yankees and Derek … but a few grand wouldnt of been crazy to ask for.

  462. Bret The Hitman July 9th, 2011 at 3:32 pm

The fan was just giving back to Jeter because Jeter has given so much to the fans. It’s karma. Baseball survived the steroid era with Jeter as the face of the game. Clean. Winner. 5 rings. Diehard. All that jazz. We have fans deserved for that ball not to be treated like a commodity. Fanhood is something you can’t measure with stats and numbers, graphs, charts, sabermetrics all that hoopla. I’m grateful for that.

  463. Yankee Trader July 9th, 2011 at 3:34 pm

  464. DFox July 9th, 2011 at 3:34 pm

I think it’s misleading to say he got “nothing” for the ball… It seems like the opener for the offer was the seats, and those alone appear to be worth about $60,000 not including playoffs. Then you toss in all the memorabilia he’s getting that wasn’t even discussed, and meeting Jeter, and going in the Yankee’s clubhouse, and being in the HBO documentary, and talking in the booth… He’ll end up doing pretty well.

Plus, the more accurate estimates for the ball are probably $100,000-$150,000…

  465. Ghostwriter July 9th, 2011 at 3:34 pm

This is an interesting article. Apparently Bonds’s #700 ball sold on overstock.com for $804,000 (back in 2005, or so). But later was expected to sell for less than $200,00 with no explanation why the value had tumbled so precipitously.

  469. DFox July 9th, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Also, just remember, seats and memorabilia = money. Just because they don’t really cost the Yankees anything, doesn’t mean they are of any less value if he sold them. Plus, this way, he has the choice of having great memories for the rest of his life, or cashing in if he wants.

  481. MoRings42 July 9th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

I think you have to be a little crazy to give that ball up for nothing.. $100k? I don’t think so. Especially not with it being that dramatic and something out of “The Natural”. Bonds Juiced ball sold for nearly a mil, I think he could have gotten more than that. You also have to factor in Jeters popularity and the fact that it’s Yankee history. We have a big fan base here.

The tv/radio/documentary were coming no matter what he did with the ball.

  482. yanks4ever July 9th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

  483. Bret The Hitman July 9th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

Why does everything have to equal money? Sometimes being a part of history and being present in the face of greatness is priceless. There are some experiences in my life that I wouldn’t trade for money. To make this more concrete. One of my friends here at school is switching careers. He left Merrill Lynch where he was a global wealth fund manager for them. He’s a multimillionaire back in school because he wants to treat people who are sick. There is value in service because it can feel so fulfilling. Now if this millionaire guy wanted to buy my dog…I would not sell him. Not for a million dollars. He’s my dog and he makes my life so much better, better than any amount of money would make it.

The point is that the fan felt satisfied with his experience, just the way that it unfolded. He didn’t need anything more to feel happy. And when he goes through life, he will be able to tap into that experience and relate it to his life at any point and time. He will always be able to tell himself that he feels grateful just for being lucky enough to experience life’s unlimited pleasures. That’s the kind of person who will never long for something extra or something more and live life constantly obsessing over filling some kind of void. That’s the kind of person who finds happiness.

Nunez is saying don’t forget about me…..

  546. kd July 9th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

    nunez has such quick hands!

  547. luis July 9th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

    Nunez!!!

  548. TheStraw July 9th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Can Gardner lay one down here successfully?

  549. Yogi Mantle July 9th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

If the Yankees lose the game, will this game still be played on Yankee Classics? Not that I want to see that. I want to see a Yankee win as that would be totally fitting for the Captain’s big day.

  550. GreenBeret7 July 9th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Nunez has lightning fast hands. Just up to him to improve there and with the footwork on defense.

  551. BoJo July 9th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Time for a triple to drive in the winning run!

  552. syd_cash July 9th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

c’mon Jete we need one more from you….get us this run

  553. Chris W July 9th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Okay, this would almost make the frustration of the last half-inning worth it.

    C’MON DEREK!

  554. Salliedogs7 July 9th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Cap it off with a hit.

  555. luis July 9th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

    I didn’t like the bunt

  556. Yogi Mantle July 9th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Nicely done bunt by Gardner. Now can the Captain deliver the go ahead FTW?

  557. syd_cash July 9th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

    ____
He may do pretty well at third, since he won’t have time to think about too much. I’m curious to see his defense there over several games.

  559. Yogi Mantle July 9th, 2011 at 4:06 pm

    YES!!!!! 5-5

  560. 4 NYY July 9th, 2011 at 4:06 pm

  568. Captain Clutch July 9th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Did anyone think that Jeter wouldn’t find a way to get the job done? This is like a movie today. HBO must be really happy.

  569. kd July 9th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

jeter knows how to make a statement!

maybe he felt a huge sense of relief and now can relax and just play baseball

  570. Chris W July 9th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

He just saw that hole and guided that ball up the middle. That’s Ichiro-like bat control. Well done!

  571. Betsy July 9th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

    This is insane!!

  572. BoJo July 9th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

  577. MG July 9th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

if Mo closes out the win this becomes a game that will live in Yankees history for the next hundred years.

Derek Jeter reaches 3,000 hits and goes 5-5 with the game winning single in the 8th inning.

You just can’t imagine the historical significance of that kind of achievement.

  578. Tar July 9th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Wow I hope Mo is on today!

He hasn’t pitched in 5 days. Is that good or bad?

  579. BoJo July 9th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

In other words, I hope they bat around against Maddon…

  580. Yogi Mantle July 9th, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Just a guess here, but I imagine that Jeter’s BA has gone up a little from today.

  581. Captain Clutch July 9th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

  582. Carlo July 9th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

  583. Yogi Mantle July 9th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

  585. Yogi Mantle July 9th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

  586. Betsy July 9th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

  593. syd_cash July 9th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

  594. Captain Clutch July 9th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

I’ve seen some very special Yankees moments in my life:
-the Mick hitting the facade on Memorial Day in 1956, it was still going up when it hit it (I was at the game)
-Roger Maris’ 61st HR off Tracy Stallard (watched on TV)
-the Mick’s walk off HR off Barney Schultz in the ’64 WS, probably his last great moment
-the Chris Chambliss HR to put the Yankees back in the WS after a long absence

    And many, many more

Today is one of those special moments that all of us will remember for a very long time.
