TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m., YES Network and MLB Network
WEATHER: The rain has gone away, that’s for sure. It’s hot and sunny here in the Bronx.
UMPIRES: HP Jim Wolf, 1B Ron Kulpa, 2B Gary Cederstrom, 3B Derryl Cousins
UNDER THE SUN: Another day game for the Yankees, and that should be a good thing. The Yankees are a Major League-best 24-5 in day games this season. They’re hitting .280 and have a 2.73 team ERA under the sunshine.
CANO AT THE BREAK: Two days before the all-star break, Robinson Cano has 21 doubles, five triples and 15 homers. According to Elias, the last player to have at least 20, 5 and 15 before the all-star break was Jimmy Rollins in 2007 — his MVP year — and the only Yankees to have those totals at the break were Lou Gehrig in 1936 and Joe DiMaggio in 1941.
NOT SURE YOU HEARD ABOUT THIS: Derek Jeter is two hits away from 3,000 for his career. He has a hit in 18 of his past 21 games.
HE FEELS YOUR PAIN: In a strange coincidence, the Braves announced today that their own veteran third baseman, Chipper Jones, will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus that’s bothered him all season. Jones had been playing through the injury, but the pain became unmanageable.
UPDATE, 1:11 p.m.: Burnett sends the side down in order in the first inning. Up next, Derek Jeter’s for at-bat No. 1.
UPDATE, 1:14 p.m.: Huge ovation for Jeter’s first at-bat. Now the two sides of the stadium are trying to get in sync for their “De-rek Je-ter” chant.
UPDATE, 1:17 p.m.: I’m really not sure how much louder this place can get. Nice first AB, shoots a bouncing single through the left side of the infield and just like that, Jeter’s one away from 3,000.
UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: Matt Joyce is really having a great year, and he just took Burnett deep — really deep — to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead with two outs in the second. That homer gives Joyce a career-high 12 for the season.
UPDATE, 1:53 p.m.: Burnett worked another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third, and Jeter will get his first chance at 3,000 here in the bottom half of the inning. Brett Gardner will lead off, then it’s The Captain’s turn.
UPDATE, 1:55 p.m.: Gardner couldn’t help himself. Headfirst slide into first base and he’s out, bringing up Jeter.
UPDATE, 1:59 p.m.: Only Jeter. Home run to left for No. 3,000. Unreal. First one to greet him at the plate was Posada, who practically crushed him with a bear hug. The Rays are out of the dugout applauding, led by Damon.
UPDATE, 2:03 p.m.: When Jeter came out for his curtain call, he waved to the fans, then waved and pointed to the mound as if apologizing to David Price for the delay. Then Jeter turned to his parents’ luxury box and held his fist in the air. The video board showed a series of pictures of every member of the 3,000 hit club before finally cutting to a picture of Jeter with the No. 3,000. Really amazing moment.
UPDATE, 2:06 p.m.: Jeter’s first home home run since July 22, 2010, snapping a streak of 286 at-bats without one. Seriously, this guy knows how to reach a milestone.
UPDATE, 2:14 p.m.: The Yankees have a 2-1 lead after Russell Martin’s RBI single, and as the team took the field for the top of the fourth, the video board showed a series of former and current Yankees talking 3,000. It ended with Andy Pettitte, obviously filmed at home in Texas, saying how proud he feels. Jeter was on the field watching the end of the video.
UPDATE, 2:23 p.m.: Immediately after tonight’s game, YES will air a special entitled JETER 3,000 that will include Jeter and Girardi’s postgame press conferences, as well as a sit-down interview between Jeter and Jack Curry. There will also be sound from various former teammates and others connected to Jeter.
UPDATE, 2:43 p.m.: Jeter is now a hit away from the cycle. He just doubled to leadoff the fifth inning, and both Reid Brignac and Sean Rodriguez made their way over to tell him congratulations.
UPDATE, 2:52 p.m.: Career hit No. 3,001 sparked a two-run fifth-inning that has the Yankees back in the lead, 4-3.
UPDATE, 3:54 p.m.: Dave Robertson has allowed the tying run in the eighth inning. It’s a 4-4 game, and the Yankees have only scored in innings when Jeter has had a hit. He’d be the third hitter in the bottom of the eighth.
UPDATE, 4:00 p.m.: Has Eduardo Nunez ever had a hit without his helmet falling off? His leadoff double in the eighth has the Yankees in scoring position with no outs and the game still tied at 4.
UPDATE, 4:04 p.m.: OK, this has gotten absurd. Jeter just tied his career high with five hits, and the fifth just drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. The Yankees have only scored in innings in which Jeter has a hit. He and Craig Biggio are the only players to ever reach 3,000 during a five-hit game. He and Wade Boggs are the only players to ever reach 3,000 with a home run. This is Jeter’s third career five-hit game.
UPDATE, 4:06 p.m.: Jeter’s the first player to ever get five hits in a game at the current Yankee Stadium. Of course he is.

I’m thinking about going to a Vermont Lake Monsters game tonight, and they’re facing the Staten Island Yankees. Other than Culver, who should I be keeping my eye on? Looks like Mitchell is pitching tonight.
Williams and Gumbs.
Today could be the day. Go Jeter. Go Yanks.
i just want the Yanks to win a game, tired of this losing streak. Sidenote why is Price’s record so bad he having a bad year??
I’m ready for Jeter to get his hits and ride into the sunset.
Yankees play better without him!
Beltran would be an enormous upgrade at DH. I like Jorge as well as the next fan, but I have supported the team since 1960. I am about the team winning not happy career endings.
He could DH, play RF and LF. I don’t see any argument against it especially in light of the huge hit the offense just took.
It’s a day game and it’s against a lefty, albeit one of the best. No worries the Yankees win and David Price is the culprit again as he was when Jeter broke the most hits in Yankee Stadium with a homer off Price.
David Price already gave up one historic hit to Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium.
Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits at Yankee Stadium with 1,269 by blasting a home run off Price in the Rays left-hander’s major league debut on Sept. 14, 2008

I’m not sure that I would want to put all chips on Nunez as our third baseman in October.
____
I have to presume Alex will be back by August….and our 3B in October.
As far as Nuney’s glove, yes it is a concern….but let’s see him a few games there before we conclude what he is. He may be better than he was at SS.
===============
Look at it this way: We never replaced Chavez. It just wouldn’t be wise not to hedge our bets here.
Look at it this way: We never replaced Chavez. It just wouldn’t be wise not to hedge our bets here.
half our team is all broken up looks like we can really use the All-Star break to get ready for the home stretch
I think it’s obvious that DH is going to be Arod’s new home sooner than anyone expected. If it will keep him healthy it makes sense to make the move when he comes back from the surgery.
I’ve been pushing for Beltran since hot stove league, and hope Cashman changes his mind now that Alex is down.
I’m not going to say anything nice about how good AJ looks today, because every time I compliment the guy, he implodes.
Mora, Kouzmanoff or Blake. I hope not. They are unwanted by other teams for a very good reason–lack of production.

Thanks for the heads up.
Nows the time, Derek.
AJ is going to have to use his curveball and change up a lot today. The Rays are aggressive and looking for the fastball.
Burnett in the first inning had 4 great pitches going. Knuckle curve, fastball, change-up and a hard sinking fastball. Hopefully he can keep them all day
this has got to be nerve wrecking for Jeter…he prolly just wants to get it over with so he can move on.
That was his pitch.
Bojo,
I’ve been on the Beltran train for a long time as well. They need him, especially now.
Haha, this is a lot of fun
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One to go…
DEREK JETER!!!
yes!!! now lets start a rally lol
Beltran was named to the ASG by Bochy and will be flying to the ASG from San Fran with the Giants.
ONE MORE TO GO!!
Beltran can’t play third base.
I think Jeter should remove himself from the game now…just to tell madden that he doesn’t control him. Right Timmy?
His numbers leading off a game are sick!
Let’s get some runs now.
Nice!! Now the crowd is going to be even more crazy every at bat.
History in the making.

I wonder why there is such a dropoff after the first inning. Obviously, his high BA in the first is probably just a small sample outcome, but it does make me wonder…
Jeter gets this #300 ut of the way and then 29 more to become the first ever to get to 3000 hits as a shortstop. 1 as a pinch hitter and 27 as a DH.
Even the suits were standing….that’s impressive.
GW–Beltran can DH and bat 4th. I wonder if the old infielder Jorge Posada can play 3rd…he has shown a good glove at 1B, and of course had a good arm as C….I’d have him taking some grounders immediately.
Jeter gets this ***#3000 out***

Why the drop off in wins since Jeter came back? Anybody? Is everyone tight because of 3000?

Nunez a sparkplug. Jeter works every once in a while then peters out.
AJ has to keep the Rays rabbits off the bases today. They will run him out of the game if given the chance.

Ghostwriter,
No, Beltran does not play third, but he does hit, with AROD out and Tex and Martin not hitting this team needs offense wherever they can get it. They can find a place for a big bat.

I thought that we were talking about leading off the game (and he can’t have more than 70 ABs leading off a game this year). His numbers as a leadoff hitter this year have not been great.
AJ being AJ, sigh…..
Bojo-
Don’t think Beltran will be a Yankee. I’m sure the Giants will “woo” him on the plane ride to Phoenix.
Martin can play 3rd on occasion. bring up Montero already!
so much for good AJ who I thought showed up….we better win this game!!
That shouldn’t surprise anyone
It was 1 bad pitch, people. Relax. Yanks score runs today.
Flash is in love with the Rays. Why do the YES network execs like him anywhere near an announcing job for the Yankees? He and Kay teamed up is like having to read timmy’s posts all day.
Yankees pitching continues to be a slumping hitter and rookies dream

___
Woo him?
What will woo him is the chance to get another big paycheck. If he knows he is going to get ABs at YS, and also get to play-offs, he will gladly accept deal to the team he was ready to give a discount to.
The only one who needs to be wooed is Alderson so he makes a deal we can live with.

My point is that Beltran won’t be much of an upgrade over Swisher or Gardner, at the margin. Getting Beltran means sitting one of the two, and it does nothing to shore up the thinness at the corner infield slots. Getting Beltran might help the club a bit, but the rationale for doing so is independent of the third base situation.
The more I think about it, the more interested I would be in seeing Posada try third base.
Bet he gets extra attention at the airport!
Bojo — You have to be kidding
Price with a lot of pitches thrown already.
GW–
Beltran could move Swisher to Dh and improve the RF defense. If Posada could play 3B (don’t know), then Alex’s offense would be replaced…When Alex gets back, Beltran’s benefit would come during play-offs where he seems to perform better than Swisher.

If the Yankees are willing to absorb the remainder of a large contract, then, if available for a reasonable package, Aramis Ramirez would make more sense while A-Rod recuperates from his arthromenisectomy-which he probably will have.

He was moved to catcher as a minor leaguer, in large measure because he was a terrible second/third baseman. I don’t think that Posada at third is a viable option.
Well Jorge is going to be 40 next month. He’s never played there in the majors, and the last time he played 3B was in the minor leagues it was 6 games, 7 errors.
Arguably the worst idea you (or anyone else) has ever come up with on this blog.
I’d love to get Cuddyer or Wigginton. Cuddyer makes more money so he might cost less in prospects.

Time for our 3rd baseman for the next 3-4 weeks to get a hit.
Ghostwriter,
First, I completely disagree he is not a significant upgrade over Gardner and Swisher. The stats are very different. He is also far better than Posada. Adding a crummy 3B isn’t a help. They need a significant bat., in my opinion. That said i see no reason to believe they will add much to payroll.

Just to expand on that a little bit. The Yankees have a substantial lead over the whole league in scoring in the first and second inning. According to Jerk the team that leads after 2 wins 70 % of the time.
I don’t think enough importance is given to Jeter’s leading off a game stats.
Lots of pitches for Price.
Now if Jeter did that, some would be all over him….
Nunez is not a significant upgrade over Jeter.
Posada at third. Uh, no. I can probably play it as well, and at my age am a better baserunner.
Jorge Vazquez can play third no?

Sure..it makes much more sense to pay Ramirez $17M next year plus whatever this year, AND give up a prospect…and then have Ramirez sit most of the season and next year…than to try Posada (a former infielder) at 3B….Sure. If you say so.
Nunez has tremendous raw batting capabilities but he still has a lot to learn.
That last AB was awful to watch. 1st pitch breaking ball was taken in the middle of the zone. Than swung at a pitch nearly in the dirt. Than hit an outside ball weekly to the middle infield.
He really does have great offensive potential, I’m just surprised the Yankees are allowing him to learn and grow at this level.

He owns a third baseman’s glove, yes.
I didn’t know when we signed Tex it was going to be the Giambi contract all over again !!
Alex should get the surgery. Like this afternoon.
if alex doesn’t go on the DL, they should consider moving him to #2 and Granderson to #4 or 5. Alex is still hitting close to .300, getting on base….
If the power is gone, let him get on base for Tex, Cano and Granderson.
Jeter
Alex
Cano
Tex
Granderson
could be the 1-5
Laird would be better at 3rd than Vazquez or Tiffey.
Good AJ. Score some runs for him!!

We’re not talking about making him full-time 3B…we’re talking about increasing the flexibility of roster and seeing if he can play as well there as Cervelli or Martin or Nunez…so that he can split time with Nunez, and allow an acquisition like Beltran to get playing time–thus improving the offense.
I think it would be worth looking at.
Three outstanding innings and one mistake on a straight fastball.
2 more Ks, 6 total already. AJ being AJ…
Nicely done AJ. Keep it up. Now Yankee bats need to do some more work against Price.

WOW!!!!!!
I’m not in favor of Aramis Ramirez if the guarantee of 2012 is not waived.
Again, Wigginton and Cuddyer make a great deal of sense because they can and have played 3B and have the versatility to be extremely valuable in a utility role once/if Alex is healthy.

===================
Swisher is a career .823 OPS player and Beltran is a .854 has a career OPS player. How many additional hits, runs, home runs do you think that this translates into at the margin? Beltran is also much better than Swisher defensively. I agree that Beltran is a better player, and I prefer having him to Swisher. But I’m pretty sure that the additional production that Beltran brings isn’t worth what it will cost to get him.
I agree that adding a crummy third-base bat won’t help, but a solid average bat (Wiggy) will help. The Yanks don’t need a savior, and they don’t need a cleanup hitter. They need a solid 5-hole or 6-hole hitter.

Now let’s take advance of Price before he settles back in
Anyone hear Sterling’s call?
Just wanted to share this really special moment with my friends on lohud. I have a headache from crying.
GO YANKEES!!!
I’m thankful that I have the moment on tape.
Just wow.
Be good all. You’re always in thought. Maybe the time will come when the “lost lohudders” can rejoin the pack.

Luis, maybe I should just stick to predicting hits intead of pointing to the spot. Babe Ruth, I’m not.
Congrats to the guy that caught the ball. That’s a lot of $$$$ if he doesn’t give the ball back to Jeter. Also classy by Damon to lead the Rays out of the dug out to clap for Jeter.

Go Martin!!!
Good hitting.
maybe Martin will get his groove back
I hope YES shows when Jeter takes the field after this inning. The crowd is going to go crazy.
I would love to see Posada bookend this rally with a homer.
You are right, you ain’t the babe, but boy!! that’s as close as i’ve seen!!
Price is not going deep into this game….

Sill smiling from ear to ear. I have watched the replay ten times already. What a moment, what greatness, what class.
Derek Jeter. Not Ruth, not Gehrig, not DiMaggio, not Mantle.
Posada is clearly lost against lefties. He forgets to swing the bat lol
Posada’s saving his energy for his eventual switch to 3B
Derek Jeter=Greatness

Timmy, what did you think of Martin’s RBI base hit?
If you think about it, it’s fitting the way it played out, he has always been a classy player, so he did it in style!!!
77 pitches for Price in 3 innings. Burnett needs to hold the serve and let the hitters knock Price out by the end of 4 innings.
AJ rattled too cause of long break…..geez
a 3000th hit HR .. you know the producers of Jeter’s HBO show are drooling right about now!
I hate watching AJ pitch. Throw strikes!!!!!
C’mon AJ…settle.

what was his excuse in cleveland after the yankees gave him a lead?
Burnett needs to find it fast and a DP grounder is a start
Congrats Captain! What a way to hit #3000.
tar and tom – we definitely miss being there and I miss you guys too! But as long as C*R9 is around there we won’t be back. I’ve been told he has at least two new identities and one is there right now.
Maybe someday he’ll be exterminated for good! Either that or when Casey Anthony gets out of jail maybe he’ll try to meet up with her – they say water seeks its own level.
Here’s hoping he disappears for good.
In the meantime, we’re with you guys in spirit.
Now back to the safe place.
c’mon AJ focus…..i also want to win the game today
Martin should come out to the mound. He is all over the place..
Trisha and MG—great to see you both here again. You are both missed.
MG, good to see you again!

Trisha—-
Is C R 9 either timmy or 86 or Frozen Rope?
Now get back to winning this ballgame. A win would mean more to Jeter than the HR 3000th hit. Getter done Yanks.
Longoria was standing right infront of Martin. It’s not like he had a chance to throw to 2nd base.

Congrats to the Captain.
MG,
It’s nice to see you agian!
AJ is a worthless tool
I love AJ.
why does this happen everytime he pitches?
why can’t he hold a lead for even a half inning?
I was thinking that timmy might be Larry.
Damn. Burnett couldn’t hold the lead.
Good afternoon, Trisha. You’ve been missed. The board is lacking in the cutie side. except for Katie, M, and Erin. For the love of God, we can’t have Randy as the 4th one.
OMG I want to punch AJ in the face, you know Jeter won’t really be happy unless we win this game too
is anyone surprised he just gave the lead back???
How quickly can Garcia warm up? I can’t watch this guy anymore.
Upton is such an easy out if you don’t throw batting practice fastballs.
Upton has a world of talent…would love him on this club as I think he will get even better.

Wow –I wold have loved to see Swish do his spider man on that HR.

God Burnett is a POS.
You can count on AJ Burnett, he’ll always f*** it up.
I said it when the decision was made that it was a mistake to skip Garcia then Burnett. Another Girardi fail
What’s with AJ and the long ball?

That homer by Upton shouldn’t have carried. It wasn’t home run stung. It just got sucked out to the seats but, still not a good pitch. Thursday night and that’s a can of corn.

Exactly. Girardi has to start treating AJ like the pitcher that he is and forget about his contract. It’s insane how Girardi treats him like an ace like CC and gives him such a long leash in games.

Is A J not the most frustrating pitcher with good stuff ?
Now let’s win this damn game !!!
austinmac —
Yes, the ball carries better in heat and thus power hitting teams have an advantage
@austinmac: I was thinking the same thing. We always hear about the ball carrying better in day/heat, so it would make perfect sense. That ball really didn’t look like it would go but poof, there it went. Need to get some fly balls and see where they land.
Jeet’s was a no doubter, tho.
Thanks Ghost!!,
What’s up man, i wouldn’t miss it for all the money in the world, it’s incredible how great Jeter’s career has been, i mean he crushed that ball!!
For those of us who cannot watch YES on TV, is there a way for us to watch the special on Jeter?
To be fair, that bottom of the inning was fairly long and emotional………..any other pitcher might have struggled there as well. That said, I still think it ridiculous that Garcia was skipped
mlb.com has the video of it.. It’s so unbelievable, I’ve watched it a few more times.
GB-it has been a tough time for us but we are getting through it. As for posting, there has been so much noise here that it has not been very inspiring. Will try.
I wonder as this game goes on how long Girardi’s Burnett leash is going to be.
BoJo July 9th, 2011 at 2:35 pm
You know what?, i think Bj’s play has to do more with character than inmaturity, he is not in his teens anymore where you can pass certain behavior as inmaturity, IMO
Yes, Jeter crushed his. He has been swinging better since his return. I recall a reporter commenting on his BP a few days ago. Good to see as it was good to hear him say he wasn’t happy with his first half and intended to do better.
The Steins must be happy he did this today…more merchandise sales!
congrats on 3,000
I’m not able to watch really follow the game by heard 3K on the radio.
Pretty friggin awesome that it was a HR. Good call by Sterling. That was cool. Congrats DJ.
Now AJ stop sucking ass and win this game.
Really ashamed that Burnett’s made 2 mistakes and they cost him 3 runs. He’s pitching fine otherwise. Get the game tied and then take more than a one run lead.
@Kay.. Seriously? Just hand it over. Anyone who does that in todays economy needs their head checked.
Good for him. I’m absolutely tired of Kay talking about it though. Mute.
How cool would it be if Jeter hit for the cycle today?

What will cap off Jeter’s day is a win and a homer by Posada.

They have to take advantage of this inning. Especially with AJ on the mound. Let’s go Cano!!!
Thanks, guys, for the kind words. I doubt I’ll be posting on a regular basis, there is just too much repetitive whining and not nearly enough of the insight into baseball and the Yankees that made LoHud special a few years ago.

Bojo: j/k sir. That’s a great idea, actually. Those don’t usually make the DVD market.
oh Posada….very very sad
Jorge not having a good day today….
I’m posting the entire article about Price and Jeter’s milestone homer in 2008:
David Price already gave up one historic hit to Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium.
Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits at Yankee Stadium with 1,269 by blasting a home run off Price in the Rays left-hander’s major league debut on Sept. 14, 2008.
Today, Price again faces Jeter on the verge of a milestone, just two hits shy of 3,000.
“I have no intention of giving up hits to him or anyone else,” Price said before last night’s game was rained out.
But as long as it doesn’t cost Tampa Bay a run, Price could make peace.
“If he leads off with a single and doesn’t score, honestly, I’d probably be fine with that,” said Price, who lives near Jeter’s new mansion in Florida. “I would much rather see it live than on TV. It’s pretty special to be here right now with him about to be the only Yankee to accomplish that feat.”
And Price knows what he would do if he does surrender the historic hit to Jeter.
“Stand out there and wait for everyone to stop clapping, like I did last time,” he said.
Posada batting righty is ugly

I hate the Rays, but they’ve been really classy about Jeter’s milestones. I recall last year that the O’s (forgot what it was for) showed no interest……but of course, they probably took the cue from their classless manager
————————-
I thought it was a total lack of class on their part to unnecessarily walk Tex to keep him from winning the HR title that year. Maybe others have, but I’ve never seen anything like it, deliberately taking away an opposing player’s opportunity to lead the league in a category in order for their own teammate to benefit.
Ok so that 3000 moment was a little more emotional for me than I thought it would be.
Get the bullpen ready Joe…

The Yankees are going to clean up in memorabilia sales and so much more. This is why Jeter’s value is so much more than his performance between the lines.

Price seems like a good guy. There is no shame in surrendering the milestone hits to Jeter. It isn’t like he gave up all 3,000 hits to him. Price is now linked inexorably with one of the all-time greats, which is not bad at all.

I love the real old movie serials from Republic and other old time production houses…Real history of movies buff.
Guy who caught the ball gave it back to Jeter. Hal gave him champions suite tickets for rest of season and front row tickets for tomorrow.
It was the right thing to do.
Ghostwriter-
Price and Jeter are neighbors.
nice for that guy, i woulda given the ball up just to shake Derek Jeters hand
Classy fan.
It’s actually damn near impossible to hit a walk off triple
The batter would have to reach 3B before the runner scored to be awarded a triple
Unless an outfielder threw his glove at the ball and hit it. That’s an automatic triple, but highly unlikely at the MLB level.
Ghost,
QFT, LOL!!!
Christian Lopez. He wanted nothing for it. And the Steinbrenners gave him (I think) 4 legend seats from now through the world series,

My girlfriend is a big aficionado of the old silent films that came out of the Weimar Republic. They can be pretty neat to watch, when Im’ in the right mood.
Not a fantastic outing, but he’s kept them in it.
I love this Lopez kid. He’s a real fan and a really decent guy. How many people would just give the ball back without hesitation?
You forgot to mention that the suite tickets are good thru the World Series-all for Christian Lopez who asked for nothing in return.
It looks like Girardi learned his lesson from AJ’s last start.
Thats what a yankee fan should be about!!, again very fitting to the moment,
Very cool for Lopez
People were fighting over it ! Did you see the guy hold it up and then abruptly stash it in his stomach and put all his body over it?
What’s the link to the story?
Holy cow, Girardi paying attention now.
How many pitches did AJ have?
86,
Thought of that as I hit the “submit” button!
What a great example of the right way to be a fan! I don’t begrudge those that sell. As they say, any ball that goes into the crowd is fair game and that’s their right to, but I love that he just wanted Jeter to have the ball.
Joyce may be the last batter I’d want hitting right ow. He seems to have Yankee pitchers zeroed in, a lot like Dan Johnson last year.
Even tho I am frustrrated with Jeter this year I am a life long fan, he’s been a Yankee since I was born !! I’m so proud of him. Maybe this will spark him to a hitting streak. If he finished this season with > .280 I’d be happy!
Is Garcia available out of the pen?
Thanks
That guy is a fool for not selling the ball. It’s not nice, classy, honorable, or anything like that. These players always want to get “what they are worth” when they are looking for a contract, and get every last penny they can, or close to it (other benefits *to them* can sometimes be a factor). There would have been absolutely nothing wrong with a guy with incredibly less money than Jeter to get “what it was worth”. It would not have been “greedy”.
P July 9th, 2011 at 3:04 pm
——-
No link. It was covered in the YES broadcast, and they interviewed the kid. He planned on simply giving the ball to Jeter without asking for any remuneration. Instead the Yanks gave him box sets, autographed jerseys, bats, and other memorabilia.
89 pitches
Wow..Logan actually got a lefty out.
Logan got it done.
He’s got the stuff to be a real weapon. His command is just really inconsistent. With Feliciano and Marte hurt, he deserves a spot on the roster.
If a pitcher has a curveball or a changeup they should throw 1 million of them against the Rays. They swing at every single one of them.
If I ‘m on first I am slowing down so Jeter gets his triple and GB gets his kiss.
How much do you think he could have gotten for the ball?
Straw,
To be fair he is been doing his job lately
That’s a nice gesture from Hal and I’m sure Derek Jeter will tip him big as well.
I swear, after all these ridiculous good feelings, if they Yankees don’t win this, I don’t know what I’ll do.
This is a Yankees Classic game in the making. Don’t screw it up team!
Nothing wrong if he wanted to sell it, but its cool that he didn’t. As a fan myself I could say that I would just ppl happy to meet the players and that would be enough for me to give the ball. Also it’s cool that he’ll always be the person that caught Jeter’s 3000th hit so now he is apart of baseball history as well. That is awesome enough in itself and more valuable then money to any fan of baseball and its history
jacksquat July 9th, 2011 at 3:07 pm

The ball probably doesn’t have much market value. Getting a bunch of memorabilia and free tix for the rest of the season from the Yanks is a pretty good deal.
i sure would like an extra run here
Syd,
Good post, couldn’t agree more
Logan has been better lately. It’s all about the slider with him. When he commands it he’s very good. When he doesn’t, not so much.
Trip: NY Post ran a story that Steiner Sports estimated $250K, but who knows. Someone would probably pay that much, but considering what the team gave the guy in return (along with the opportunity to meet DJ), I think that he did just fine.

The lineup without Arod and to a lesser extent Swisher is scary bad.
Jones has to be off this team after the break. Just has not been much help at all. Never wanted him when they signed him.
___
Beltran to LF, Jones DFA, Gardner 4th OF/pinch runner…
Hey, the guy can do what he wants. If I was a recent college graduate who was selling cell phones because he couldn’t find a job in my profession, and was struggling just to get by, I would have sold it. I just don’t agree that giving it to Jeter was “the right” thing to do, as if selling it would have been the wrong thing.

LOL. 4-4.
Jeter might have a huge second half in him. And that would just be pretty much the best thing ever.
wow Jeter ! is locked in.. i haven’t seen him look this good in 2 years !!!! Holy cow he’s actually playing like the Jeter we all know and love !!
Let’s hope this continues. What a day for him!

Let’s put the Nunez era on hold for a bit, shall we?

I could not agree with you more, i don’t know why they signed him. Surely we can find a better back up outfielder then a player who is just a shell of his former self.
“as if selling it would have been the wrong thing.”
No, that is unfair, given the circumstances. But I think it’s okay to celebrate the guy’s generosity.
P July 9th, 2011 at 3:13 pm
Ghoistwriter, thanks for the update.
How much do you guys think the 3000 ball is actually worth $$ wise ? I think I might take it home with me and then decide what to do with it if I caught it. Just saying.. it’s a nice gesture and all but these guys are gazillionaires, whats $100k to them? It’s like $10.00 to most of us!!!
—————
A hundred thousand dollars is a hundred thousand dollars. And nobody is going to pay $100,000 for that ball. Obviously, you could try to auction it off, or put it on EBay, but it’s probably not worth much more than several thousand dollars.
If the Yankees gave that kid 4 of the cheapest Championship Suite seats for all remaining home games face value would be around $ 35,000 and that doesn’t include playoffs.
Hey I did call for a 4-4 game from Jeter early this morning!

It sure would take the sting out of losing Arod for several weeks.
Jeter has hit pretty good since coming off the DL and also driving the ball. Maybe he was fatigued and the days off really helped him. Arod and Jeter will benefit from being the DH more often down the stretch and next year.
im actually glad they saved the rain out for september….
yanks dont have may home games in september…
plus we have a beat up team right now without swish and alex and a bullpen….
The Captain is absolutely OWNING this day!!!!
It would be real cool if Jeter offers to take the kid and his family out to dinner

A rare breed indeed….
I am surprised that the fan gave up the ball for “nothing”. He is only 23 years old. They were estimating on epsn that the ball can be sold for $300k-$400k. The athletes have millions but to an everyday person that is too much money to give up.

LOL!
Nice play by Nunez. He looked very comfortable making it.
If like they said Arod can’t do any more damage to his knee by playing then why is he even sitting out at all?
In essence he did “sell” the ball. He gets a bunch of free tickets to games that he might have paid to see or at least wanted to see. He gets dinner/lunch all of those days too.
I’m 53 and don’t need the cash. If I’m 23 and struggling to pay rent I’m not sure I owuld have been as reasonable.
If Alex can’t drive with his llower body he has no power. Thus the 25 or so games without a HR. The question comes down to whether a diminished Alex for 75 games is better than a healthy Alex for say 50 games.
It’s not an easy call either way. I’m sure he’d prefer to play through it, but I’m not sure that’s best for the team.
No walks. How long do i have to hold my breath?
I still want to see Jeter get a triple…need to hit it to LF past Joyce…Upton or Zobrist are probably too good defensively
Wow Wade has really moved up the depth chart.

I’m sorry but those guys on ESPN are nuts. I can’t imagine that their estimate was anything more than a SWAG A Babe Ruth home run ball could fetch that much.
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg.....irates.xml
I hope Jeter gives the kid some money under the table, he certainly doesnt have to. But that young man may not want the money at 23 … but in 20 years he may need some cash to send his kids to college or … just to get by. They did give Sorriano 11 million … I think the Yankees would of found something for him.
Nice gesture, great day for the Yankees and Derek … but a few grand wouldnt of been crazy to ask for.
Chipper is getting his surgery, and so should Alex. he’ll be back inless than 4 weeks.
Great outing by Wade there
Wade has been a great find for the Yankees. If they can ever get Soriano healthy, the pen could be formidable down the stretch.
The fan was just giving back to Jeter because Jeter has given so much to the fans. It’s karma. Baseball survived the steroid era with Jeter as the face of the game. Clean. Winner. 5 rings. Diehard. All that jazz. We have fans deserved for that ball not to be treated like a commodity. Fanhood is something you can’t measure with stats and numbers, graphs, charts, sabermetrics all that hoopla. I’m grateful for that.
Bojo-
I just want to see the Yankees win this game-and NO I don’t want to see Turtle Posada playing 3rd, unless it’s a blowout. LOL
I think it’s misleading to say he got “nothing” for the ball… It seems like the opener for the offer was the seats, and those alone appear to be worth about $60,000 not including playoffs. Then you toss in all the memorabilia he’s getting that wasn’t even discussed, and meeting Jeter, and going in the Yankee’s clubhouse, and being in the HBO documentary, and talking in the booth… He’ll end up doing pretty well.
Plus, the more accurate estimates for the ball are probably $100,000-$150,000…
This is an interesting article. Apparently Bonds’s #700 ball sold on overstock.com for $804,000 (back in 2005, or so). But later was expected to sell for less than $200,00 with no explanation why the value had tumbled so precipitously.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....id=2056280
time for the Yankees to add some more runs against Howell
I would like to see the guys get another run or 2 if they can. Considering the fact that Mo is hurting who knows what to expect from him in the 9th inning.
Bret,
very good post, by the way nobody is saying selling the ball was wrong, just not as classy as the player has been troughout his career, again as you put it as well as the best could have, couldn’t agree more. Props
Also, just remember, seats and memorabilia = money. Just because they don’t really cost the Yankees anything, doesn’t mean they are of any less value if he sold them. Plus, this way, he has the choice of having great memories for the rest of his life, or cashing in if he wants.
gah thought that was a hit
great post bret.
the clean aspect of jeter’s game cannot be understated enough. the media will never give him the credit he deserves.
he’s an all time great. there’s no doubting that
Why all those defensive changes?
Is it just another case of Maddon trying to show everybody how smart he is?
Damn that ball had too much hang time
When upton has the desire, he can be an outstanding player…nearly as good as anyone in the game. He lacks nothing but the desire.

========================
Something in me just says “Sorry” wasn’t meant for N.Y. Some guys just can’t handle N.Y. His performance (little ) and even attitude towards his pitching so far here, leaves me with big doubts.
I do hope I’m wrong, just a gut feeling.
Wade has a very good curve that big for him.
Upton stands in Grandy’s way for Gold Glove. The guy is amazing in CF.
Jeter was very handsomely remunerated for his efforts throughout his career. I don’t think that class has anything to do with it.
Babe Ruth’s #702 ball went for $265,000.
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/20.....or-264500/
I have no idea what that ball would go for I’m just trying to imagine the minimum amount of $$$ that my wife wouldn’t kill me over if I decided to forgo the cash and opted for the tickets.
I could hear myself now…” So what if you heard on ESPN it’s worth 300,000$. They don’t know squat anyway! “
I remember how long it took Bill Robinson to put it all together…and will never again short-change true talent like Upton. I would take him as future RFer any day.
I think you have to be a little crazy to give that ball up for nothing.. $100k? I don’t think so. Especially not with it being that dramatic and something out of “The Natural”. Bonds Juiced ball sold for nearly a mil, I think he could have gotten more than that. You also have to factor in Jeters popularity and the fact that it’s Yankee history. We have a big fan base here.
The tv/radio/documentary were coming no matter what he did with the ball.
What matters is that he didn’t want anything for the ball. What he got doesn’t matter when you talk about the kind of fan he is.
Why does everything have to equal money? Sometimes being a part of history and being present in the face of greatness is priceless. There are some experiences in my life that I wouldn’t trade for money. To make this more concrete. One of my friends here at school is switching careers. He left Merrill Lynch where he was a global wealth fund manager for them. He’s a multimillionaire back in school because he wants to treat people who are sick. There is value in service because it can feel so fulfilling. Now if this millionaire guy wanted to buy my dog…I would not sell him. Not for a million dollars. He’s my dog and he makes my life so much better, better than any amount of money would make it.
This isn’t quite a 3,000-hit ball, but it is one used in the game in which Ripken collected his 3,000th hit.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_1.....948089203P
i wonder what would happen if upton was in a clubhouse full of eventual hall of famers who’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars by maximizing their talent?
That ball was probably worth somewhere around 300 k
4NYY-
It’s hard to know. If he was pitching with an injury, maybe his demeanor was just a result of being mad that he was not healthy and not performing well. The real question is whether they can get his arm healthy enough to be effective.
“Why does everything have to equal money?”
I agree, but some things should equal money, such as monetary wagers.
Andruw’s days have to be numbered. His bat has nothing left in it.
The only way Upton would make his way to the Yankees is through another team (multi-team trade) or s a FA.
Bret The Hitman,
apples and oranges. Nothing this kid got couldn’t have been bought with the money he would have received. Tickets, memorabilia. Plus he would have been brought up into the booth and met Jeter even if he had asked for X amount of dollars.
I know if it were me my dad would have advised me to ask for money. Not for selfish reasons but to have a nice nest egg or to help me get started out in the world. Its not like he found this money in a cab and decided to give it back.
Realistically I think I would have put it up for bid.
But, I would only allow Derek and the Yankees to bid.
Otherwise I would hold on to it and pass it on to my kids.
I respect the guy for just giving Jeter the ball. That’s very classy.
i like el capitain that’s my vote for YES player of the game
Jeter and the team are lucky that the Yanks aren’t playing the Sox or Phillies today, or another team with a lot of fans. I doubt a Sox or another fan is giving the ball back. Unless they are going to sell the season tickets they wouldn’t want that stuff.
Godson is mashing at Scranton and is a way better fielder than Jones. Doesn’t he at least deserve a shot?
DRob and Mo shut it down 8 and 9 so we can get this win
i still believe Yankees will go hard for Beltran, Sox too….
They need that extra bat in the lineup, and yes Gardner is a very good LF’er, but Beltran doesn’t suck in the field and his bat is far and away better…
Gardner will move to the bench and Jones will go away.

Its time to think about winning baseball games.
Not a good start to the 8th inning. Not likely to get out of this one. It’s been too freky that he can continie to not make a mistake…and he didn’t. Now save the tie
Of all the days, D-Rob. Of all the bloody days…
This team is *infuriating* right now.
thanks for ruining the game for everyone Robertson
AJ denied
2 0-2 hits. Come on Robertson!!!
DRob, aughhhh.
Oh well, maybe Derek can get pie today, too.
Now a stolen base.
Martin throwing like he’s Posada
DRob was 0-2 on Damon and Zobrist…seems like strike 3 is hard to get.
limping into the ASB
Martin had no chance there. This would be a tough game to lose.
Let’s not start that again….
“Martin throwing like he’s Posada”
He had no chance. Robertson has a long, deliberate delivery.
I would think Jeter is going to give the “kid” something, too. I missed the part where he was talking about his education. He may get some interesting job offers now, too, just by this publicity. I heard him saying something about he was just trying to make it.
Granderson’s K with 2 in scoring position really hurts.
Triple,
The point is that the fan felt satisfied with his experience, just the way that it unfolded. He didn’t need anything more to feel happy. And when he goes through life, he will be able to tap into that experience and relate it to his life at any point and time. He will always be able to tell himself that he feels grateful just for being lucky enough to experience life’s unlimited pleasures. That’s the kind of person who will never long for something extra or something more and live life constantly obsessing over filling some kind of void. That’s the kind of person who finds happiness.
It’s like winning the lottery and giving money back to the state. Way to be an American Patriot! No one in their right mind would do that.

Need DP—now.
What the hell is this? Robertson is better against lefties than righties, surely Joe’s binder tells him that.
If Upton goes deep here, I’m throwing something through my TV.
Here’s another one of these idiotic intentional walks that make late inning defecits bigger than they should be. I guess the intentional walk to get to nelson cruz in the alcs game 6 last year taught Joe less than nothing.
Ghost,
Agree trhat Jeter doesn’t sell that ball for any price, but i think you can’t compare the worth of the 3000th hit ball of Jeter ( first yankee to do so ) to any of the rest, JMO
Bret The Hitman,
Or he is just a naive youngster.
If Upton goes deep here, I’m throwing something through my TV.
____
You know Upton would have been up either way right?
Even if they got Kotchman out…
Better yet, he could’ve auctioned it off and gave the money to Dereks charity. When there’s a price tag that big on something, you have to make it about the money.
Robertson has to worry about the batter at the plate
Upton too dangerous….
Why does anybody care what the guy did or didn’t get for the ball? He seems perfectly hppy with the exchange. Not everyone is a money-grubbing jerk.

Triple,
I think it’s unhealthy to twist contentment into something it is not. I think satisfaction with life as it is indicates the opposite of naivete. I think it speaks of wisdom. Surely there must be some experience in your life that you wouldn’t trade for money or that you wouldn’t need enhanced in any way. True happiness does not require monetary or material gains or enhancement of any sort.
“If Upton goes deep here, I’m throwing something through my TV.

It’s a non-issue at this point, as Robertson got him, but I think the difference between a two-run lead and a three run lead is significant.
Okay. Now go win the blasted thing!
Jeter with a walk off hit?
“Jeter with a walk off hit?”
Only seems fitting, doesn’t it?
There is no way a game like this will end with just closing out the game normally.
IIRC…Jones’ performance nose-dived after ASG the past 2 seasons…time to bring up Golson.
Carlo–do you still feel Jones was a better call than going internally this year….for example, Golson or Dickerson?
Nunez is saying don’t forget about me…..
nunez has such quick hands!

Can Gardner lay one down here successfully?
If the Yankees lose the game, will this game still be played on Yankee Classics? Not that I want to see that. I want to see a Yankee win as that would be totally fitting for the Captain’s big day.
Nunez has lightning fast hands. Just up to him to improve there and with the footwork on defense.
Time for a triple to drive in the winning run!

Nice win. End of the losing streak thanks to the Captain. The Jeter haters can shut their pieholes for the day.
I’ve seen some very special Yankees moments in my life:
-the Mick hitting the facade on Memorial Day in 1956, it was still going up when it hit it (I was at the game)
-Roger Maris’ 61st HR off Tracy Stallard (watched on TV)
-the Mick’s walk off HR off Barney Schultz in the ’64 WS, probably his last great moment
-the Chris Chambliss HR to put the Yankees back in the WS after a long absence
And many, many more
Today is one of those special moments that all of us will remember for a very long time.
