Shields vs. Yankees
TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m., YES Network
WEATHER: Another nice day here at the stadium. Looks like the Yankees won’t have any trouble playing their final game before the all-star break.
UMPIRES: HP Ron Kulpa, 1B Gary Cederstrom, 2B Derryl Cousins, 3B Jim Wolf
MORE ABOUT JETER: For the first time since May of 2009, Derek Jeter has an extra-base hit in four straight games. He’s hit safely in 19 of his past 22 games and has 10 extra-base hits in his past 22 games after collecting just seven in his first 45 games this season.
UP NEXT: A four-hit game by Jeter would move him into a tie with Al Kaline for 26th place on baseball’s all-time list. He’s seven hits from tying Wade Boggs for 25th.
AFTER THE BREAK: The yankees played 18 of their first 22 games after the all-star break against teams at or below .500. The Yankees will be on the road for 42 of their final 74 games.
BERNIE CHIMES IN: Bernie Williams is in Arizona for several all-star game festivities, and before taking the stage on Saturday night, he passed on the following message to Jeter:
“Congratulations, Jeet, on No. 3,000. I wish I could have been at the Stadium today, but I was certainly glued to the TV in my hotel room in Arizona. In true Jeter fashion, you did not limp into the 3,000 hit club, but absolutely blew the doors off of it. I celebrate with you, your family and friends, all your teammates through the years, the Yankee organization, and baseball fans around the world. While the home run for number 3,000 is what everyone will remember from this day…knowing you…you probably are more satisfied with that eighth inning single up the middle that won the game. I was privileged to have the best seat in the house to see the majority of those 3,000 hits, and so many of your greatest moments, and while today is yet another one of those moments to add to your amazing career in pinstripes, I know there is still a lot more to come. Just exhale, enjoy it, and know what an honor it was to be your teammate for so many years. Tonight, my last song is dedicated to you my friend.”
UPDATE, 1:16 p.m.: Robertson is in! Dave Robertson has replaced David Price on the American League all-star roster.
UPDATE, 1:46 p.m.: Sabathia is in! CC Sabathia has also been named as an all-star game replacement. He is — oddly enough — replacing Tampa Bay starter James Shields. Obviously Sabathia won’t be going to the game, so he’ll be replaced by Alexi Ogando of the Rangers.
UPDATE, 1:49 p.m.: My only guess is that Nunez thought he was either going to be hit by the throw or out on the tag. Otherwise, I can’t really explain the last-second slide into first. My initial reaction was that he had seriously injured himself, but apparently not.
UPDATE, 1:51 p.m.: There’s 3,004, a bunt single down the third-base line. Really, really nice bunt by Jeter.
UPDATE, 1:53 p.m.: I don’t see any reason to have Granderson bunting in that situation, but I sit next to Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger during home games, and really hates the sac bunt strategy. I mean really, really hates it. His reaction when Granderson squared to bunt was epic. Off the charts, epic.
UPDATE, 2:04 p.m.: Just showed a U.S. women’s soccer update on the big screen. Huge game-tying goal, and the crowd erupted here at the stadium. The game was on in the Yankees clubhouse pregame (or at least the leadup to the soccer game was on in the clubhouse pregame).
UPDATE, 2:22 p.m.: The women’s soccer game is over, and the big video board tells me the U.S. won. It also tells me that there was more scoring in that soccer game than we’ve seen today at Yankee Stadium. Still scoreless in the sixth.
UPDATE, 2:46 p.m.: Sabathia forgets to cover the bag. Upton forgets there’s only one out. Call it even.
UPDATE, 2:54 p.m.: Two base-running mistakes by Robinson Cano, and he’s rewarded for each one of them. Should have been doubled off at first, goes to third on a horrible throw from Upton. Should have been picked off at third, scores on a throw into foul territory. It’s 1-0 Yankees. They aren’t all as pretty as yesterday.

C!
Go CC. Go Yanks. Congrats again to Jeter.
Bring it, C!
Bernie = always a class act.
When he gets 25 more hits while playing SS in those games, Jeter will become the only player to ever collect hit 3000 hits as strictly a shortstop. The other 28 hits came as a DH and PH. That says it all.
Fittingly, first pitch strike.
A perfect game would be a nice way to top yesterday.
GB, QFT.
Bojo, I doubt anything today could top yesterday.
Johnson tends to be a real pain, for whatever reason
Looks like CC has packed on a few pounds. “I’ll have what Bartolo’s having.”
K
Nice play by Tex.
Today would be a great day for old posters to drop by and say hi.
From what I recall, they really have no more to fear from C R 9, as I understand SJ44 apparently has his info and is willing to release it here if he ever acts up again. I suspect he is too much a coward to risk that.
Fans showing the love.
Guess Jeter isn’t going 5-5 again today.
DRob just named to ASG
DRob has been added to All-Star team!
Dave Robertson is replacing David Price on the American League all-star team.
If DRob knew all it took was to blow a save, he could have done that a while ago.
DR is going to All star game…awesome! This just in….
Congrats David Roberston. It’s not nearly as meaningful since the entire universe has pulled out in essence making this game a farce – but hopefully as a young player Robertson will enjoy it; the experience.
Atta boy, Tex.
Yanks showing patience. 21 pitches so far.
Shields has the kind of face that just begs to be punched.
Go figure. The Yanks are being no-hit again. This team is so inconsistant.
Did price back out? I thought he was still eligible to pitch.
Surprising that they DFA’d Sonnastine
GB
When did they announce that about Sonnanstine? I read that they just optioned him to AAA.
GreenBeret7 July 10th, 2011 at 1:32 pm
Surprising that they DFA’d Sonnastine
___
Shocking…think Red Sox will pick him up?
Posada a little dicey language caught on mic
kewl for Roberston that he got in the All-Star game. So now did Washington pick him as a replacement?? (if so good for Washington)
Tom,
You spoke too soon!!!
Hey Luis! How are you doing today?
andruw jones has pictures of girardi and cashmen together. he has to right
The Yankees don’t have another outfield option right now. I am sure Cashman is aware of Jones performance and is looking at the possibilities.
Congrats to David Robertson. He truly deserves the recognition.
Did the Rays DFA Sonnanstine? I’m surprised. I didn’t think he was having that bad a season, or was the Rays had better options, couldn’t deal him.
CC Sabathia has also been named to the all-star team, but obviously he won’t be going.
Trisha—
Getting e-mails bounced back…Guess I have an old one for you. Sorry.
Shields is being replaced by Sabathia, who’s being replaced by Ogando.
lol why is this ump so loud!
Hi Bojo whats up!
Everything fine on this end
People were worrying/complaining about CCs K rates, weren’t they? He’s suddenly turning that around as of late.
TY, they announced on the YES broadcast that Sonnanstine was DFA’d for Guyer.
CC to all star game! Of course he can’t go..but he was selected. Nice!! Good gesture by Washington
Chad Jennings July 10th, 2011 at 12:34 pm
The player I was talking to looked at me with his eyes wide open. “Big Man is on the mound today?! Oh, that’s the best news I’ve heard in a long time.”
———————————————————————
for many of us, from now on, whenever CC takes the mound there would be no better music to play than the other Big Man’s solo from ‘Jungleland
We need you, Nunez.
Well, this is a nightmare
uh oh
Joe, Sonnanstine seems like a perfect nationl League west coast pitcher to me.
really Nunez…no need to slide into first he woulda made it either way and now another injury
And that’s why you don’t slide.
Damn!
that’s a lousy slide on my book, i hope he learns from that one
now that was the dumbest slide i’ve ever seen. unless you’re trying to break your ankle that is.
Cool. Rally.
hit nice play Jete
Thatta boy, Jeet!
Are there going to be any stars at the All Star Game? LOL!
Small ball love it.
Very nice, Jeter. He seems pretty pleased with himself.
“now that was the dumbest slide i’ve ever seen. unless you’re trying to break your ankle that is.”
Yup, but I think it was due to indecision over what to do.
3004!
GB
They announced after the Rays game on their broadcast and in the newspaper this morning that Sonnanstine was just being optioned.
Very nice baseball there.
I don’t like that bunt.
okay now whats with all the bunting
Grandy doesn’t have good numbers against Shields, by the way. He’s on my fantasy, I looked
Good baseball, with Sabathia on the mound, try to build a run and get a lead.
Grandy has how many HRs and he bunted?
“Grandy doesn’t have good numbers against Shields, by the way. He’s on my fantasy, I looked”
Ok, well maybe bunting isn’t so bad.
Go the other way dumb……
So Kay says that Tex refuses to hit the ball to the left side. Isn’t that something Girardi can speak to him about?
Why smallball sucks.
this team just cant score with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs
Awful send. Doesn’t Upton have a very good arm?
Hmm
Wasted opportunity there…
wow that whole inning turned into a disaster maybe they shoulda let Granderson swing away. Its not like Tex has been swinging a hot bat either
maybe tex should have bunted to third too….
It was worth a try, and it took a perfect throw to get Nunez and Upton made it.
He could have brought to the plate if he just tries to go through the ss turf
Nice that timmy is out today…no C R 9 around lately.
Because Granderson had already given up an out, Nunez had no choice but to try to come home on that fly ball.
Both runs
Upton showing off his mad skills again…
I hope the gods of baseball don’t turn against us for that lousy inning
“for many of us, from now on, whenever CC takes the mound there would be no better music to play than the other Big Man’s solo from ‘Jungleland”
—
This would be pretty awesome.
Also, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen Marc Carig react to a guy with 25 home runs being told to sac bunt with no outs and runners at first and second in the third inning.
ac1 July 10th, 2011 at 1:58 pm
maybe tex should have bunted to third too….

That’s what I’m thinking too.
“Also, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen Marc Carig react to a guy with 25 home runs being told to sac bunt with no outs and runners at first and second in the third inning.”
Smart man.
What a goal with a minute left!!
Perfect by CC
Great play by CC!
Momentum just shifted again< i hope
If I was Upton and saw CC running at me like that, I thinnk I would curled up into a fetal position.
That’s a veteran ball player that knows how to do his job.
wow whats up with the Rays bad baserunning they are normally good
Bojo,
i rather face him than 5 ft, 95 pound woman!!
I think Carig was wrong.
Granderson bunting made absolutely no sense. Tex has been swinging the bat like crap recently. You can’t leave it up to him to get the run in. With Arod most likely out for a month Tex has to pick it up and carry the team instead of blending in.
2 impressive swings from Martin
luis July 10th, 2011 at 2:05 pm
Bojo,
i rather face him than 5 ft, 95 pound woman!!

I don’t want to see the pictures of the women you know.
If Montero isn’t coming up, they need to find some offense at C some place else.
BoJo July 10th, 2011 at 2:09 pm
LOL, no you don’t
2-2 USA Brazil now in shootout
3-4
USA WINS
USA USA USA
usa wins 5-3 on penalties!
Great game.
what a day…..
cc is a beast, looking better than ever
USA beats Brazil
Sox getting it handed to them by the O’s early on…
I have my cats Tiki, Taylor, and Teddy sitting in front of me as I try to watch game and eat a chicken salad sandwich…Not usre if they are interested in your posts or the game though.
Now time for the Yankees to put this game away.
I am so Fing sick of Andruw Jones
For those who understand – Curb tonight.
Golson or someone else has to replace Jones after the break. His bat has nothing left to offer the team. Or maybe Ortiz can give him one of his shakes.
We’ve seen a few pitcher’s duels this year.
I’ve got no problem with the Nunez trying to score on that play. It took a perfect throw to get him. Upton did it this time. Sometimes they don’t. Not like Shields was likely to give up a 2-out hit.
Quite a pitching match up….great game for the break
CC is in beast mode!!!!
Something crazy, from Joe Posnanski:
“Derek Jeter got his actual 3,000th big league hit — counting postseason hits — in June of last year against Houston’s Wandy Rodriguez. It was a home run.”
If Jeter gets on, no bunting.
Nunez is further convincing Girardi that they can get by with him while Alex is out.
man, cc is good. is this approaching historic domination?
and how are people saying cy young every time they mention his name?
CC is rolling.
If you ask me Nunez is a much better 3rd baseman than a SS, he looks more comfortable making the shorter throw, they are all on the money instead of his throws from SS which are all over the place.
Bojo, nothing better than a good chicken salad sandwich.
I still think we should be getting Beltran and dropping him in LF.
Get rid of Jones, move Gardner to PR and late inning defensive replacement.
Doesn’t Beltran have a better arm than Swisher?
MG July 10th, 2011 at 2:31 pm

____
That is also what I suspected and stated yesterday….curious to see how he does over a larger sample size.
Doesn’t Beltran have a better arm than Swisher?
___
Probably, but why move two people instead of one?
Joe from Long Island July 10th, 2011 at 2:32 pm
Bojo, nothing better than a good chicken salad sandwich.

My cats agree. Pip wants me to ask you: “Got tuna?”
Sabathia is the back that the yanks will ride to #28.
Here’s his song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLzzsei_EyM
Rare brain freeze by CC on that hit to first.
Crap…Come on CC!!!
ac1 July 10th, 2011 at 2:45 pm
Doesn’t Beltran have a better arm than Swisher?
___
Probably, but why move two people instead of one?______
Because Gardner ingames with hs dene. PutBltran in RF, and Swsher a DH..plaoon him with Jorge.
Upton fails again
Is Upton fighting Posada for the worst active base runner in the game?
“Probably, but why move two people instead of one?”
Playing LF in NYS is similar to CF in many parks. Beltran’s ability to remain healthy this season has been attributed by some to his move out of CF. I’m not sure the spacious LF is conducive to Beltran remaining healthy. Couple that with his arm, and RF probably makes more sense.
Either way, I think that in the unlikely event that they get Beltran (I think the Mets would want more from the Yankees than any other team), they will rotate the corner OF, with Gardner in the mix, and also use Beltran at DH.
Bojo,
Did your cats type that?
In the Pirates-Cubs game, John Hirschbeck just took one directly in the 5-hole while umping at home plate and dropped immediately.
Oddly enough the Pirates trainer ran out and administered some smelling salts to revive him.
Not Upton’s shining momemts in this inning
That’s the preferred version of smallball.
Must. Score.
Mick hit the deck Haha
Ah, the agony known as BJ Upton…..
Great tools, but bonehead plays.
LOL who mentioned on here yesterday that the Yanks should get Upton???? right
Martin just sucks.
tomingeorgia July 10th, 2011 at 2:50 pm
Bojo,
Did your cats type that?
___
Apparently…
come on martin. one run is probably enough for this game
Upton is *trying* to lose this game.
And Martin hits it exactly where he shouldn’t have. Dammit.
S. Rodriguez is a lot better defensive player than I thought he was.
Gift!!!!!!!!!!
SOB Martin all of the bases to ground to he gots to ground to third….maybe a fly out Martin, just maybe
That’s just unbelievable.
WOW.
Martin is helping the pitching staff, but his hitting has really been lousy since april.
good thing for the errand throws.
Thank you Upton and Shields
WOW this is some of the WORST defense I have ever seen!!! oh my
Wow – the rays are fundamentally imploding. We’re not doing ourselves any favors by not scoring with runners on 3rd with less than 2 out but they seem amenable to helping.
1run could be enough.
Maddon has got to be on the verge of exploding.
Cano wanders off the bag twice this inning and still scores!
Maddon Ball.
Nice 2-base sacrifice by Posada.
If that pick off attempt by Shields had worked, how is that not a balk? Deceiving the runner?
tomingeorgia July 10th, 2011 at 2:50 pm
Bojo,
Did your cats type that?
___
Apparently…but they feel strongly about it
This inning was not one for the time capsule. Cano also got away with mistakes. A decent toss by Shields to 3B and Cano is caught in a rundown.
At least Cano got on with a hit. Imagine if he’d walked or been hit by a pitch.
I feel like that run shouldn’t actually be attributed to the Yankees offense. That’s basically an Own Goal in baseball.
Rodriguez had to sky pretty well when Martin’s chopper almost kangarooed over his head.
Aldo
I think they go by where his front foot lands. But yeah it looked close didn’t it.
How is Sabathia not on the All-Star team? I mean, really.
Some games you’re destined to win. Let’s hope this is one of them.
CC for at least 8.
That slider has just been *filthy* for four or five straight starts.

Rodriguez had to sky pretty well when Martin’s chopper almost kangarooed over his head.

Another player I like–very versatile
So Michael Kay is that baby’s godfather? All kidding aside, he must be really be respected by the crew.
Chris
I believe CC was named to All-Star team today- he declined because he pitched today.
sabathia says he loves the hot weather because he stays loose between innings. i think the yankees should put a heated room next to the dugout. july cc all year
Sabathia’s got the 9th once he strikes out shoppach
Chris W July 10th, 2011 at 3:01 pm
How is Sabathia not on the All-Star team? I mean, really.
_____
he is…was named today,but won’t play
I live in the Tampa market and am stuck listening to their broadcasts but that pickoff play to 3rd is something they’ve done before-they got Asdrubel Cabrera with it earlier this season. Cano was only off a couple of steps, the play is just timed to go as soon as he starts to take his secondary lead.
CC should pitch the 9th.
or gets the groundout to the kid shortstop
Let CC finish this game!!
So does CC pitch the 9th or Mo? I would leave CC in.
CC for complete game! Let’s go!
Pure domination.
Best signing of Cashman’s tenure. By a long shot. He turned down Santana, and got this guy. Well done.
“he is…was named today,but won’t play”
Okay, I missed that.
All those in favor of CC going out for the 9th say “aye”…..
Seriously, this is his game.
CC was an even better signing than Mussina, which was also a great sign.
Thanks MG
That’s a good play.
Joe, Sabathia gets the 9th inning.
Tar, yeah, it looked very borderline as to where the foot landed. But it appeared that Shields actually made the pickoff trow with his landing foot still up mid-air.
Hard to make a call, I’d say. It’s the kind if thing that Girardi would have to maybe mention pre-game to the umps, cause protesting after the fact would be useless.
have to go guys, have a good one see ya later
what no Mo in a 1 run game
I liked Andruw Jones when we signed him. But I don’t think he had anything left. If Golson’s slugging, he deserves a chance.
Joe from Long Island July 10th, 2011 at 3:06 pm

YES doesn’t even bother showing Andruw’s strike out lol
what else can you say about sabathia??
19-6 2009
21-7 2010
12 wins already going for 13…before allstar break..unreal!!
“Hard to make a call, I’d say. It’s the kind if thing that Girardi would have to maybe mention pre-game to the umps, cause protesting after the fact would be useless.”
That’s a good point especially in light of what MG just posted.

Okay, here we go. Don’t let us down, big man!
it was obvious that the blazing speed of Robinson Cano forced defensive mistakes, As always, speed kills.
Hopefully CC can have a 1,2,3 inning so he doesn’t have to face Longoria.

that’s a small price to pay to live 15 minutes from the #1 beach in the U.S.
Andruw Jones really sucks.
syd – only one pitcher on the staff that I’d not automatically go to Mo, and that guy’s on the mound.
The Yanks have two holes on their roster – Posada and Jones. I know Martin has not been hitting, but he brings a lot to the plate in his catching and game calling; even with Montero on the team, Martin is still the No. 1 catcher, and carries his weight.
At some point, before the post-season, they have to address the 4th OF and DH positions. There’s just too much at stake.
Just can’t say enough about the job Showalter is doing in Baltimore. What a leader of men.
The Rays are giving out Kyle Farnsworth t-shirts at one of their next home games
I still get a kick out of Jones’s nonchalance on can of corn plays.
To think, CC could have had a couple more wins earlier in year…
Posada has shown enough against righties that he deserves continued starts. Against lefties? Not so much. A lefty-killing bat is really a need right now.
97 mph cheese on the corner. Wow.
97 in the 9th inning, unbelievable…
ALdo
I just rewound and slo mo it. He did get his foot down.
The thing that was questionable IMO was he never seemed to come to a complete stop. It was close but I can see them not calling it.
LETS GO CC 97 MPH!!!
97 miles per hour?? This guy is mowing the Al east down….
Forget these lefty killer specialist guys. Just upgrade over Posada. This “bat that kills lefties” sits on the bench way too much to expect production when he gets at bats.
How long do we have to carry that dead weight named Andruw Jones? Can’t we give Golson or Parraz a try?
The umps being a bit generous, but…
Ball game over. Theee Yankees win! Theee Yankees win!
this is for CC, the BIG MAN:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e4-20tqC4A
Sweet.
Get Johnson and leave Longoria in the on-deck circle
Wow. Tampa Offense: Owned
98 miles per hour.
CC man’d up that 98 heater. Wow.
I love the emotion!!
What a performance by CC Sabathia.
98 mph on his final pitch.
9 K’s
He now has 24 consecutive scoreless innings.
The BIG MAN
CC withe the complete game 4 hit shutout – 2 hours 11 min per YES announcers!!!! The big man ROCKS!!!! An absolute ACE!!!!
Masterful pitching on both sides today. Sabathia was just sensational. It was almost as if tampa knew they had no chance from the first inning on.
a 98-mph fastball K to end it.
what a stud…..
good for CC
Wow CC really wanted this game. That’s a lot of emotion from him.
Ok–good win!
So screw you guys, I’m going home.
Pie time
I just wish the Yanks could get a true ace and put Sabathia into the 2 or 3 slot in the rotation.
And he gives the credit to his catchers!!!
Sabathia 13-4 with an ERA 2.72 and Whip 1.16. What more do you want from an ace?
MG, you’re right. There are no worse homer announcers than the rays’.
