Yankees go into the break with a win

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 10, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

They aren’t all as pretty as yesterday. This afternoon, the Yankees only real bright spot was CC Sabathia, but he did enough to carry the Yankees to a 1-0 win against the Rays in the final game before the all-star break. Sabathia pitched a complete game, striking out nine, walking one and picking up his 13th win. The only scoring came in the seventh, when Robinson Cano made two base-running mistakes, but was rewarded with a pair of throwing errors that let him score once when he should have been out twice. The Yankees have won eight of their last nine series heading into the break.

Really, the Yankees just need to get healthy over the break, and get a few of their bats back on track. The bullpen, though riddled with injuries, is solid, and we’ll be getting back Soriano at some point. The rotation is shaping up – it looks like it’ll be between Nova and Hughes to see who’s the fifth starter. Garcia has been better than we dreamed. Colon had a rough outing on Thursday, but his stuff is real, and I think that the break he got will keep him going. A.J. has been more than serviceble. And you can’t say enough about C.C.

A good righty bat, a strong comeback from Hughes, and continued success by either Garcia or Colon, and this team is poised to contend all season, and be in a place to make a run at No. 28. No, this isn’t the 1998 team. But this is a good baseball team, and posters here shouldn’t forget it.

  8. GreenBeret7 July 10th, 2011 at 3:24 pm

I just wish the Yanks could get a true ace and put Sabathia into the 2 or 3 slot in the rotation.

  9. Swishalicious33 July 10th, 2011 at 3:24 pm

And Ron Washington + the player voters didn’t think he was worthy of being an All-Star WITHOUT being a replacement. What a joke. CC is out of this world this year.

  10. MG July 10th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

    Memo to Ron Washington:

CC Sabathia is an All Star, period.

    C. C. Rider…go see what you has done

  12. Benny Blanco July 10th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

CC is one of top three pitchers in the league…. Period. I’m tired of this guy not getting respect.

  13. LGY July 10th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Jeter willed them to victory yesterday and CC did the same today

  14. Rich in NJ July 10th, 2011 at 3:26 pm

I wish CC could be the #1, #2, and the #3.

  15. LGY July 10th, 2011 at 3:26 pm

With a nice assist from BJ Upton

  16. Tar July 10th, 2011 at 3:28 pm

“I wish CC could be the #1, #2, and the #3.”

I am thinking he would probably use him as the DH as well!!

  17. yankeefeminista July 10th, 2011 at 3:29 pm

CC almost crushes poor Gardy in the postgame hug.

  18. GreenBeret7 July 10th, 2011 at 3:30 pm

You know it’s your day when the worst pitch the opposition pitcher throws is to third base and it costs him the game.

  19. Tar July 10th, 2011 at 3:30 pm

    “we could”

Sheesh and I haven’t even had anything to drink yet. Maybe that’s the reason.

  20. Swishalicious33 July 10th, 2011 at 3:30 pm

It’d be nice if the Orioles could be a little less useless.

  21. yankeefeminista July 10th, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Be the change you wish to C!!!!!!!!

  22. Tar July 10th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

“Jeter willed them to victory yesterday and CC did the same today”

Speaking of willed to victory- did you see the Soccer game! WOW.

  23. tomingeorgia July 10th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Yankees have been well blessed with huge pitchers. We’ve got CC and Colon now, Wells in the recent past. Who else? And they’ve been plagued by them too. Mickey Lolich comes to ming.

  24. Joe from Long Island July 10th, 2011 at 3:34 pm

That was a succinct summary by Chris W.

Whether that bat is Beltran, Aramis Ramirez, or Jesus Montero, I don’t care. But they do need to make a move here.

  25. Tom in N.J. July 10th, 2011 at 3:38 pm

    Babe Ruth?

    Goose?

  27. Rich in NJ July 10th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

    Rick Reuschel

  28. Rich in NJ July 10th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Mike Torrez was a pretty big guy.

  29. LGY July 10th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Of course a Red Sox pitcher gets ejected and it actually benefits them because Weiland sucks.

  30. tomingeorgia July 10th, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Aceves appears to be very sharp.

  31. BIG AL July 10th, 2011 at 3:55 pm

Ron Washington leaving CC off the AS team to begin with was just plain wrong. Perhaps Ron’s nose candy got in the way of his judgement.

If CC was not at, or near the top, of AS pitchers, then the thinking process is not in focus.

  32. Carlo July 10th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Aceves throwing 94 mph today. Again though, hard to overlook the magbificient job Buck Showalter has done managing these orioles. Just outstanding. A true difference maker.

  33. tomingeorgia July 10th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Showalter always appeared to me to be something of a humorless martinet. Never liked him.

  34. BIG AL July 10th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Where was that throw from Upton when Nunez was tagging. Wish he’d have thrown that one into the seats.

  35. RadioKev July 10th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

It’s funny, CC had a good season last year so it’s easy to over look the fact that he was playing injured. Writers were saying he isn’t a top 10 pitcher anymore, there’s the All Star snub too. CC is proving people wrong in a hurry. He doesn’t have a sub 2 ERA, but the big guy always seems to get rolling this time of year.

  36. tomingeorgia July 10th, 2011 at 4:01 pm

    Radio,

Know what CC”s ERA is now?

    ==================================

As was Billy Martin ………. Showalter is a great baseball mind, whether or not you like him, he deserves respect for the job he does as a manager, and in the past as a GM.

  38. Rich in NJ July 10th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

I think Buck played a very useful role in helping to turn the Yankees around in the early ’90s. I’m not sure that many managers would have had the patience given George’s presence. Plus, he was one of the people who identified Pettitte’s upside early on.

  39. tomingeorgia July 10th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

    Al,
I respect his ability to shape up a team, short term. Why can’t he keep a job?

    Looks like it’s at 2.90.

    tom -

Like Billy Martin, he wants everything his way, and he ruffles too many feathers.

  42. tomingeorgia July 10th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

    Al,
    That’s all I was saying!

  43. BIG AL July 10th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Smart move by A-Rod, get it done, and be back much healthier for the late push and PS.

Let’s hope Tex and Cano can step up their game to fill the void.

  44. Bx is Burning July 10th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

    2.72

  45. lil m July 10th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Can’t believe CC – he finishes the game at 97 and 98. One of the best deals the team has ever made in bringing him to the Bronx. Big Game James was masterful and matched him pitch for pitch, two errors made the difference today. Yankee fans can be confident with CC matched up against any team’s top starters. What a great weekend!!

  46. 108 stitches July 10th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

GM’s will be talking during the All Star break. 21 days until the deadline. Cashman has to know for sure what the status is for Soriano, Feliciano, and Marte before making moves on the bullpen front but a lefty will eventually be needed.
Releasing Andruw Jones is a no brainer.

  47. BIG AL July 10th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

A record of 13-4, and a 2.72 ERA, that’s no AS in Texas, LMAO. Hey Ron Washington, stop the nose candy, and your judgement might improve.

  48. Bx is Burning July 10th, 2011 at 4:14 pm

CC has given up 1 earned run in his last 35 2/3 innings.

  49. JM July 10th, 2011 at 4:18 pm

CC’s ERA over the past six starts is 1.77.

  50. randy l. July 10th, 2011 at 5:15 pm

“Ron Washington leaving CC off the AS team to begin with was just plain wrong. Perhaps Ron’s nose candy got in the way of his judgement.”

people villifying ron washington for a mistake he made in the past are just plain ignorant. the guy is a quality baseball guy.

every year deserving guys aren’t picked for the all star team.

  51. comet July 10th, 2011 at 7:33 pm
