All smiles on the morning of the all-star game

If these pictures don’t make you smile, then I don’t know what will. Here’s Robinson Cano, during and after his Home Run Derby win last night in Arizona. The all-star game is tonight. Let’s start the day with a guy smiling. A lot.

    :D

Excellent way to start the day.

  2. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 8:45 am

    You’re right. They do.

    :)

  3. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 8:46 am

The smile definitely comes from mom.

    ;)

  4. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 8:47 am

But the awesome physical talent definitely comes from dad.

    ;)

  5. Yankee Trader July 12th, 2011 at 8:47 am

Yes Mell and GB-Davey Johnson hit 43 for the Braves in 1973 at the age of 30.
I personally think Cano will break it at some point in his career-maybe when he becomes the fulltime clean-up hitter.

  6. blake July 12th, 2011 at 8:48 am

    MTU,

I think Cano has a year like that in him….pitch selection and focus are the only things that limit him.

Mell, I was half serious…..I like the HR derby but it is WAY too long…..its longer than a game is which is crazy. 10 outs a round is too much….they need to find a way to get it into the 1.5 -2 hour range. I would also love some sort of skills competition…..don’t know how it would work or who they coukd get to participate but baseball needs to think outside the box more than they so.

Austinmac, I went to Grandfather Mountain this past weekend and the Highland games were going on up there……pretty cool stuff.

  7. Yankee Trader July 12th, 2011 at 8:49 am

His Dad was more nervous than Robinson last night-hence the smile only when his son won the contest!

  8. blake July 12th, 2011 at 8:49 am

Robbie needs to talk to his boy Felix and have him demand a trade to the Yankees…..Robbie and Freddy on the same team…..how could he say no :)

  9. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 8:50 am

    Blake-

    That’s what I think.

So, of course, that means he can do even better.

    :)

  10. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 8:52 am

Cano reminds me of Rod Carew with more power.

    :)

  11. Erin July 12th, 2011 at 8:55 am

    MTU-a pretty good combination. ;)

Blake-the derby is WAY too long.

  12. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 8:55 am

Cano’s swing gets a little wild when he starts going for the tonks. We’ve seen it this year early on when Long mentioned him hitting 40 homers. Long swings, chasing pitches in the dirt and piling up strikeouts. He can settle in at 33-37 homers with his normal swing and hit .335-.240 with 120-130 RBI and I’m more than happy.

  13. Yankee Trader July 12th, 2011 at 8:56 am

    Blake-

King Felix and King for the night Cano on the same team-Awesome!

    MLBTR-July 11th

The Giants have interest in Carlos Beltran, according to Danny Knobler. Beltran said today that he won’t be shocked if the Giants trade for him.

Giants had a head start with him playing out in SF this past weekend and flying together with the Giant allstars to Phoenix.

  14. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 8:56 am

    normal swing and hit ***.335-.340***

  15. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 8:59 am

Beltran needs a DH league with smaller parks than the NL West has in order to get one more big contract.

  16. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 8:59 am

    GB-

    And GG defense too !

    What a package.

    :)

  17. Mell July 12th, 2011 at 8:59 am

    YT:

I’m with GB on the “NO” to Cano topping 43. Just don’t think it’s his game.

Oddly, Johnson never hit as many as 20 homers in any other season of his career. The year before hitting 43, he hit 5 for the Orioles, who moved him that winter in large part to create room for Bobby Grich. Not sure anyone else has seen a 38 home run improvement from one year to the next.

  18. austinmac July 12th, 2011 at 9:01 am

    MTU,

We have talked a out going to Utah. It would be good to have an expert guide.:)

  19. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 9:01 am

    Mell-

    Buttista had quite an improvement.

    Just not quite that good.

DuPont can do wonders for some guys.

  20. Yankee Trader July 12th, 2011 at 9:01 am

Come August 1st is this the Yankees lineup ? Against a lefty?

    Jeter SS
    Granderson CF
    Teixeira 1B
    Cano 2b
    Beltran LF
    Swisher RF
    Posada DH
    Nunez 3B
    Martin C

  21. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 9:02 am

    Austin-

Let’s try to work it out sometime.

In the meantime I can look for an expert.

    Have a great time.

    ;)

    MTU:

You got me. How the hell do remember the mid 70′s and forget last year? Bautista saw a 41 homer improvement from ’09 to ’10.

  24. tyanksfan36 July 12th, 2011 at 9:06 am

    Blake

I follow Jeremy Guthrie on Twitter, he said he thought they should do a target contest for pitchers, that could show their accuracy. I also like the idea of the foot race to see who is the fastest runner there. I thought the derby was extremely long too.

  25. blake July 12th, 2011 at 9:07 am

    MTU,

I think 2010 could be an average year for him for the next 4-5 seasons…..he has that sort of ability.

  26. upstate kate July 12th, 2011 at 9:07 am

    Blake
We hiked Grandfather Mtn one year we spent spring break in Asheville/Lake Lure.

One of the HR Derby participants (can’t remember who) said he needed a 90 mph fastball to hit balls out.

    Wonderful pix of Robbie :)

  27. JM July 12th, 2011 at 9:08 am

The Homerun Derby is way too long and Chris Berman is way too annoying.

That said, it was great watching Robbie and his Dad. It’s been a nice few days in Yankee-land.

  28. Erin July 12th, 2011 at 9:08 am

    Last MLBTR post:

By Tim Dierkes [July 12 at 7:56am CST]
The Cardinals “might reconsider [their] stance” on trading center fielder Colby Rasmus, reports Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He adds that GM John Mozeliak “would have to acquire a significant return for Rasmus but may be willing to plumb long-standing interest from the pitching-rich Tampa Bay Rays.”

Rasmus, 24, is showing “only halting development” in Strauss’ opinion. He’s hitting .246/.329/.413 with nine home runs in 360 plate appearances this season. That’s solid for a center fielder, but a decline from last year’s numbers. Defensively, Rasmus put up a strong UZR in ’09 but has been below-average in over 1,800 center field innings since then.

    No thanks!

  30. Bronx Jeers July 12th, 2011 at 9:09 am

Hard to believe this is Robbie’s 7th season. I love that he announced to the crowd “I’m only 28″
Robbie’s not a small man but he’s not a big man either and I thought last night was a good lesson for kids that you don’t have to be Barry Bonds big to have power.

Jeter’s getting a lot of grief for a guy that’s done nothing but make MLB look good for 16 seasons.

I see another fan almost took a serious fall last night. He was saved when his brother caught him by his bootstraps.

The NY Times ran a story about Christian Lopez’s potential tax hit. It could be as high as $14,000. By the way I heard that everything else from that day is either for sale or up for auction.

Erin, Did you see that Posh Spice named her daughter Seven ?

  32. Erin July 12th, 2011 at 9:10 am

JM-Chris Berman needs to be relieved of his duties. It gets more and more painful to listen to him every year.

  33. blake July 12th, 2011 at 9:10 am

    Trader,

I hope. Beltran makes a ton of sense for the Yanks and their competitors want him too….would them them and hurt the competition to get him.

    Tyanks,

I think that would be awesome…..its just that I kinda doubt teams would allow pitchers to compete in anything due to fear of injury.

  34. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 9:11 am

    Mell-

    It’s simple.

As we age our short-term goes first.

  36. blake July 12th, 2011 at 9:12 am

    Kate,

Grandfather is great…..especially this time of year. It was 70 degrees up there.

Rasmus would be awesome…..not sure Id empty the farm for him though ……not sure he’s that sort of player.

Jeter’s getting a lot of grief for a guy that’s done nothing but make MLB look good for 16 seasons.

    ////

Grief from a-holes, but the players understand:

Padres closer and former Met Heath Bell said Jeter’s performance was “awesome.” He then offered this insight:
“Jeter is a great guy; I think he’s one of the few gentlemen in this game,” Bell said. “I was fortunate to play in the World Baseball Classic and I thought I was a nobody, but he treated me like I was a Hall of Famer.
“I was hoping to see him and congratulate him, but he pulled out for his personal reasons and I understand why because he just came off the DL and he wants to be healthy for his team.”

“Derek and A-Rod are pretty much the face of the All-Star Game, but I think they have the right,” Ortiz said. “DJ just came off that calf injury, he’s not 20 anymore. They want to be there for their team in the second half.”
Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp watched Jeter’s home run and, before the blast, commented to teammates: “This would be dope if he hit a home run. I’m serious. If this dude hits a home run it would be amazing. That just sums up his career. He’s one of my favorite players, I want to be like him when I grow up.”

  41. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 9:17 am

Cano is built along the lines of Mantle…maybe 5-10 pounds heavier. Thick forearms and through the chest and shoulders. Also a perfect hitter’s build with somewhat rounded and sloping shoulders.

Seems some league honchos understand, too:

“We would love for Derek Jeter to be here but Derek Jeter has always done everything we have asked ever since he has been in the majors,” Major League Baseball senior VP Pat Courtney told The Post last night at Chase Field. “No one can ever question Derek Jeter’s commitment to the game. While we would like him to be here, we certainly understand.”

    MTU,

Id take either one…..Upton might even be more talented than Kemp and he’s a little younger. As I’ve said, Cashman needs to make it a priority to have one if those 2 in RF by ST 2013.

  53. J. Alfred Prufrock July 12th, 2011 at 9:25 am

    Upton/Kemp in RF

When grandy slows down a bit Rasmus moves to CF.

    Hey. A feller can dream.

    :)

  61. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 9:32 am

Phelps is going to be good, very good. Pitches a lot like Carpenter, is from St Louis, Gardner gives them insurance with Berkman and they need up the middle defense and bat, really bad.

LaRussa dislikes Rasmus and his father intensely and he’s been a bit of a disappointment. He’s not really a center fielder. He’s a corner and so is Jay. St. Louis needs a true center fielder.

Both Freese and Craig are utility types, but, I’d be willing to toss in Heyer or Pendleton.

  62. blake July 12th, 2011 at 9:32 am

    MTU,
Yea Kemp is more doable as he will just cost money…..a lot depends on who buys the Dodgers though and how bad he wants to stay in LA. Upton will probably be available sometime…..when will probably depend on how good the Dbacks are in the next couple of years.

  68. Bronx Jeers July 12th, 2011 at 9:38 am

    Shame,

I wouldn’t call the kid stupid. He’s received a tremendous amount of good press and perhaps he can parlay that into something that would help him.

But the 3,000th hit is real money maker. Everybody’s got their hand out including the IRS. Yet somehow the average guy would have been crucified if he looked to profit from it.

  69. blake July 12th, 2011 at 9:39 am

besides the age don’t you think Pence is a better player

  77. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 9:47 am

Rasmus is 24-25 years old, and not a center fielder. He’s had one decent rookie season and last year showed promise and strikes out a ton. This year isn’t even as good as his rookie year. Rasmus’ value is in potential.

  78. Tom in N.J. July 12th, 2011 at 9:49 am

Gardner, Nova, and a little more for Rasmus…

  79. blake July 12th, 2011 at 9:51 am

.”this year isn’t even as good as his rookie year. Rasmus’ value is in potential.”

True but there is a lot of potential there and he’s not a FA until 2015. So he’s cost controlled really through what should be his prime years……those are the types of players the Yanks need to offset both age and the salaries of other players.

  80. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 9:51 am

David Adams continues his rehab in Tampa of the FSL this week. He’s playing his solid defense, hitting for his usual gap power and running well.

  81. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 9:52 am

Adams will be in Trenton or Scranton by the end of the month.

  82. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 9:55 am

Rasmus is a decent player at this time, but, I’m not head over heels with him. When a 24 year old major league ball player allows his father to interfere with his career, there are issues.

  83. MTU July 12th, 2011 at 9:55 am

If I can’t play in the field, I’m not going to play,” Berkman said during today’s All-Star Game press sessions. “I’m not going to sit on the bench. That’s 100 percent.

“Now, if that’s the only job available and if, in my heart, I didn’t feel like I could go out there and run around and catch the ball and play defense. . . I probably wouldn’t be worth a dang anyway.”

Berkman said, “The game is designed to be played with the pitcher hitting. I don’t like the DH. And if you can’ t play a position. . . that’s not baseball.”

You trade Nova for Rasmus and don’t think twice about it.

  92. J. Alfred Prufrock July 12th, 2011 at 10:09 am

The Rays aren’t likely looking to deal Shields at all in the thick of a pennant race & he’s pitching like he is. Maybe once Matt Moore’s ready they move someone. Moore, they’ll never deal, of course.

You are not getting James Shilels for Colby Rasmus
    ———————————————————

    don’t shoot the messenger

Even with his stock slightly down, Rasmus would be a hot commodity on the trade market. I can see why he’d interest the Rays, who control center fielder B.J. Upton through 2012 but could control Rasmus through ’14. Rasmus could jump past $3MM in arbitration next year against perhaps $7MM for Upton. Upton could be moved in a separate deal, though the Nationals would probably be interested in both center fielders. It’d be a big win for the Cardinals to somehow pry James Shields loose in a Rasmus deal, but with Shields’ ace performance and his contract offering options through ’14, a direct swap doesn’t seem to benefit Tampa Bay enough.

  94. J. Alfred Prufrock July 12th, 2011 at 10:10 am

Haha, good stuff, Erin. Granderson called it, too.

  95. blake July 12th, 2011 at 10:14 am

If Im the Rays Id trade Shields for Rasmus…..they are flush with pitching and they need young offense to go with Longoria. It would be a gamble but they have to take some gambles to hang with the big boys in the AL East……would be a bold move.

  96. upstate kate July 12th, 2011 at 10:15 am

I saw that when Grandy was being interviewed by the mlb network crew. They were teasing him about being a future broadcaster, which I could certainly see as he is so articulate. They had him analyze his swing and compare last year before and after. He also said he likes the Grandyman nickname.

    Blake —

    No I don’t.

The most valuable thing in baseball is cost-controlled pitching. A 15-game winner is much more valuable than a .259 hitting (career) outfielder with more errors (14) than assists (8).

    Joeman —

Didn’t shoot you. Just believe that there’s no way on earth I’d deal an All-Star starting pitcher for a .259 hitter with decent, not great power.

They need offense but the Rays are going to hang in because of pitching. Shields is their glue in a talented but somewhat inexperienced rotation. Once Moore is in there, they’ll have more options.

  100. Erin July 12th, 2011 at 10:24 am

kate-I can definitely see Granderson becoming a broadcaster once he’s retired.

  101. J. Alfred Prufrock July 12th, 2011 at 10:26 am

    I see Granderson entering politics.

    86,

Im not sure Nova is a yearly 15 game winner…..that’s an assumption just the same as the projections on Rasmus are assumptions.

  105. GreenBeret7 July 12th, 2011 at 10:33 am

A trade that could help two players and two teams would be for St. Louis to trade Rasmus to Tampa for Upton

  106. 86w183 July 12th, 2011 at 10:34 am

I agree. Which is why Rasmus is not proven enough for me to give up a pitcher who won 8 games in just 16 starts.

But I do think he (Rasmus) is a really talented player.

  107. J. Alfred Prufrock July 12th, 2011 at 10:36 am

I like the way Nova went down to AAA & just threw a gem. He knows he belongs in the majors. I think Nova is going to gain consistency & take the next step once he is brought back up, whether here or if he’s moved elsewhere. Nova’s time is here & he knows it.

  108. djsunyc July 12th, 2011 at 10:38 am

    gift limit is 13K

but i’m sure jeter has a corporation. he should dummy employ the kid and give him a nice 100-200K salary for the year.

  109. Yankee Trader July 12th, 2011 at 10:38 am

No package including Nova does it for me for Colby Rasmus the 4th best OF’er on the Cardinals.

Now if you’re considering Royals Alex Gordon for fulltime LF duty, I’m in!!

  110. champ809 July 12th, 2011 at 10:42 am

The Rays would absolutely consider a Shields for Rasmus deal as Shields will have to be traded in the offseason anyway because his arb $ will be too much for them too handle. They would have preferred to have traded him over Garza last offseason but Big Game James was coming off a terrible season with a high salary so he wasn’t as attractive. He’ll be highly attractive coming off a CY caliber season if he keeps this up.

If the Rays could work a deal for Rasmus then they could move BJ to the Nats for Danny Espinosa and move him to SS. With Joyce coming into his own the could run out a lineup of

    Jennings- CF
    Zobrist- 2B
    Rasmus- Rf
    Longo- 3B
    Joyce- LF
    Espinosa- SS
    Kotchman- 1b
    + dh & C

and still have enough SP with Niemann back and guys like Matt More near ready to come up…

I’d bet that Rasmus ends up in Atlanta though for maybe Jjurjens…Rasmus and his dad both really wanted for him to end up in Atlanta to play for their fav team and be back home in GA.

Rasmus/Heyward/McCann/Freeman would be a sick LH core lineup to build around….

The Cards would have a ‘ro of Wainwright/Jair/Jaime and Shelby Miller to anchor the franchise for the next 4-5yrs that would rival anybody in the game…

  111. 86w183 July 12th, 2011 at 11:00 am

I’m amazed at the man-crush you guys have on this guy. Colby Rasmus is not worth an All-Star caliber starting pitcher. Not even close. Yes he’s talented, but…..

Shields is due $ 7 M next year with a $ 2 M buyout. The Rays can afford that.

As someone once said you gotta respect jeter’s gangsta.
Let the rest of the yankee hating country and liberal media who constantly diss the man eat cake.
