Prior and Soriano taking steps forward
The Yankees will make one move today, officially putting Alex Rodriguez on the disabled list and adding someone to fill the roster spot. The list of candidates is long. It’s possible to make a case for Greg Golson, Chris Dickerson, Brandon Laird, Jorge Vazquez, Kevin Russo… but whoever gets the call-up, they’re likely to fall into secondary role while Eduardo Nunez gets the bulk of the starts at third base.
As for future moves, two injured relievers took positive steps forward yesterday. Here’s the latest from The Associated Press down in Tampa.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees right-hander Mark Prior is back pitching after missing almost three months because of a strained groin.
The converted reliever said it was a step in the right direction Wednesday after allowing an unearned run and one hit over two innings for the Gulf Coast League Yankees against Atlanta minor leaguers.
In his first outing since pitching on April 18 at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Prior threw 24 pitches with a fastball that reached 90 mph.
Prior has struggled with shoulder injuries and made his previous major league appearance in August 2006. The 30-year old went 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA in 30 starts for the NL Central champion Chicago Cubs in 2003.
Also, Yankees reliever Rafael Soriano threw 25 pitches during his second batting practice session since going on the disabled list May 17 because of right elbow inflammation.
Soriano signed a three-year, $35 million deal with New York in the offseason to handle the eighth inning, but struggled while adapting to the new role. He was 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 16 appearances before the injury.
Left-hander Pedro Feliciano, hoping to avoid surgery for a left shoulder tear, has resumed a light throwing program. Reliever Damaso Marte, coming back from left shoulder surgery, is continuing to throw off a bullpen mound.
Also, the Yankees have finalized a contract with 24-year old Cuban right-hander Reinier Casanova and assigned him to the GCL Yankees.

Can’t find anything on this Casanova kid. If anyone has any info, please post. Thanks.
He’s a lover not a fighter
Odds of him actually being 24?
Not good.
I found some stats on him, but I nothing descriptive.
Bring in laird to help out at the 4 corners, Golson to replace Jones and Montero next week to replace Cervelli. Only Montero is not on the 40 man roster.
I’m sure he’s older… they always are
Here’s what baseball-reference.com has on him
“Reinier was 3-3 with a save and a 6.47 ERA for Pinar del Rio in 2007-2008. He improved to 6-5 with four saves and a 3.22 ERA in 21 games in the hitter-friendly league in 2008-2009. The right-hander then defected from Cuba. “
If he can get outs, I don’t care if he’s 24 years old in El Duque years

Got to see Duque in Game 2, ’98 WS….he may have been 56, but was he a great post season pitcher or what?
Thanks, 86, I did see that.
Have not seen an update on DePaula status lately, assuming there is one.
Dickerson has been out for a week or so with injuries, so, I’m not sure that he’s healthy enough to get back to NY right now. Golson is hitting everything hard, plays a dazzling center field and corners and is in the top 4 in outfield assists.
Real baseball tonite.
Yeah. Thats’ what I’m talkin’ about.
Update on DePaula is that there is no update. Stoneburner is supposed to pitch for Tampa Yankees either today or tomorrow. and the big news is they are now saying NO SURGERY for Heathcott, as per PP.

Montero is eligible to come off of the DL today, YF, but, no word on that, yet.
JAP, Andrews was the final word on Heathcott. Definitely good news. The injury affects his throwing, but not his hitting supposedly. Hope to see him heal up, and read that he may play in AFL if all goes well.
Too bad Turley won’t be back though. Whoever said may only 2 weeks was obviously off base; I just read more like 6 and out for the season. Pity.

Thanks, GB. Here’s hoping.
DePaula’s development is being stymied by bureaucracy. He is on DSL1 roster but unable to pitch. He was projecting to be a fast mover too. Waiting for Godot, indeed! Ugh.
I understand why people want Laird up here – even Golson. My prediction though is that they just call up Dickerson, use Nunez at 3b and leave Pena on the bench as the utility infielder. It’s what they did when Derek went down – I don’t see why they would change it up now.
YF, Heathcott will be better of playing the corners as opposed to center. He’s a big kid and plays like it’s football. That’s what he needs to tone down. I think center field may be covered for a few years.

Gotcha.
GB, I am not surprised. I haven’t seen Mason since the June 19th game in Brooklyn, and he was a beast then. I’ll bet he is grown into a veritable monster at this point. Trenton keeps getting in the way of my getting to SI. I noticed Mets show occasional Cyclone games. Why can YES show some SI games? (sigh)
*has grown*
*can’t* (typo city)
Bringing up Golson and Laird are improvements over Jones and Pena.
Need to send Mitre packing and get the LH in the bullpen that doesn’t cause overuse of Logan.
We’re past the Super Two status of Montero. Bring him up and send down Cervelli. Montero can split time with Russell Martin. The call to the big leagues may bring out the best in Montero and keep Martin fresher for the rest of the year.
108-
I agree. Let’s chop out the deadwood and clean up the forest.
YF, Williams is going to move through the system like lightning. He’ll be in Trenton soon enough. That Friday night game in SI is tempting, but I just can’t do it with both Betances & Banuelos on tap, back-to-back. If they can really limit their control issues, which I think is imminent as they go deeper into the season here, the window for seeing them in Trenton starts shrinking. Got to take advantage of the amazing good fortune of having both these guys down here at the same time.
Hi, everyone!
I’m a longtime Yankees fan up in Alberta, Canada, and I really enjoy coming here for all of the insight and opinion!
Sending my parents to the game in Toronto tonight and I wondered if anyone happened to know what the Yankees batting practice schedule usually is when they’re on the road. I realize it may depend on the city, but does it usually happen within a given timeframe?
Was just hoping my parents could be there to see some of the sluggers knock some out!
Go Yanks!
Cheers!
And the 1st tree to fall should be Jones.
Useless doesn’t begin to describe him.
just think about Williams as he continues his baseball education and learns how to steal bases. I think as he physically matures, Williams will move to more of an RBI spot. Having only seen the Staten Island park on TV, the triples are a surprise. Culver is hitting well…especially after Law said that they were to weak to be good hitters. If they continue this hitting, will Law retract that statement? I think so, since he loves to admit he’s wrong.
muddyduck, welcome! One question–Oilers or Flames fan?
The visiting team has BP second. Therefore, I would expect if its like NYS, Yanks should be on the field somewhere around 5:30 or later and off by 6:30 at latest??? Just a guess.

GB, Law is way off base on Culver. Mason will definitely increase power as he fills out. But he is so speedy, so his versatility allows for variable choices in lineup. I could see Heathcott moving to a COF. Agree, he is far too aggressive for his own good.

That Brooklyn performance from Mason just stays with you. Not just great speed but the jumps he got both in the outfield & on the bases are a part of his skillset going forward. The fact that he’s a LHB is just so intriguing. The arm was also really, really strong. Didn’t know about the arm until I saw it. Could we have another Granderson in the making, with a better arm? Looks like he’ll develop more power. He’s just a string bean right now.

“Jones get’s dumped for lack of effort AND talent”
And for smiling w/o being able to hit.
Thoughts:
1. I don’t believe the Yankees are going to bring up Montero until he’s been off the DL for a little while longer.
2. I don’t believe the Yankees are going to bring up Montero to play 2 times a week – Russ Martin may not be hitting much but the Yankees love him behind the plate – they’re not going to mess with the chemistry he’s got going with these guys mid season which means at best Montero gets Cervelli’s starts. Also, the Yankees don’t have the option of DHing him given the glut of players that they need to use there right now due to health concerns.
3. I agree with the need for a second lefty. It sounds like JC Romero plans to opt out of his deal with the Nats by the end of the week and at that point will sign with the Yankees. That’s not a great solution – and I figure if the Yankees have been loathe to bring up Randy Flores there’s no reason to believe they would call up Romero.
4. The Yankees aren’t releasing Andruw Jones in favor of Greg Golson – Jones is here because he is capable of hitting for power at the Major League level from the right side. If Golson comes up it would be ahead of Dickerson – not Jones.
5. If it were up to me, I would send Ramiro Pena back to AAA, recall Golson and Laird – play Nunez at 3b and then when you want to give Derek a day off let Nunez play SS and play Laird at 3b.
6. What I think will happen is the simplest solution – they’ll recall Dickerson; Pena will stay on the bench, Nunez will play 3b.

Yea, looking forward to that.
If the Yankees pick up Marcus Thames (recently DFA’d by the Dodgers) then you might see Jones released – but I still see that as a very unlikely scenario. The Yankees picked Jones over Thames this winter because Jones can play the OF reasonably well while Thames can’t play it at all – that dynamic has not changed.

Repost from last night:
Here is a more complete list of possible post-season opponents that have tough 1-2 starters. If Colon and Garcia don’t last; and even if they do, our odds of going deep in the post-season would increase greatly if Cashman can pull some magic out of his hat and obtain a strong starter to follow Sabathia.

Dickerson hasn’t played since the middle of last week when he was hurt in the middle of a game. He’s also hittin .230
Chip is right about Golson. If he gets the call it is over Dickerson not replacing Andruw.
Andruw’s role on the team is to hit LHP by subbing for Gardner in LF or Posada at DH. Since Golson has been terrible against LHP this season he wouldn’t be doing either of those things. The thought of Golson starting at DH for even one game is terrifying and he is neither a better hitter or fielder than Gardner. It’s makes very little sense to have him replace Andruw.
So where does that leave Golson? He would just be a defensive replacement for Swish at the end of games and pinch runner.
Sound familiar?

I wonder if the incompetance of the prosecution is on purpose. If the trial gets thrown out it could end it quickly and be forgotten. It won’t end well for them, but a lot of people think that all the government money spent on PEDs in baseball has been wasted.
If they declare a mis-trail, the government may not “want” to go through it all again, and just let it drop having already shown that they were willing to go after Clemens. It isn’t the results at times as much as it is the message that is sent.
pat, thanks for the Golson update. I’d bet this isn’t the last move in the next day or 2.
jeopardy has attached, mistrial means its over
Jeff Novitzky showed up in court today for Clemens trial and Prosecutor messed up.
Karma is alive and well.
“jeopardy has attached, mistrial means its over”
I’ve watched every episode of Law and Order and my understanding is that if there is a mistrial, the prosecutor can refile the case. If the judge dismisses the charges with prejudice, then the trial is over.
The Mets have indicated that they will hold onto Carlos Beltran until they get exactly what they want for him, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney. They believe that a team in need of offense will give in to their demands and surrender a top prospect for Beltran, who earns $18.5MM this year.
Fine-go to the Giants.
Cashman-Just trade for this guy. Better OPS than Beltran and would help in OF for a whole lot less+ is a FA and no NTC.

The money Clemens received from the Yankees in 2007 as a pro-rated contract and a 6-6 record has long since been in the pockets of his lawyer, Rusty Hardin.
Wow….rough month for prosecutors
If Bonds walked, Clemens should too, for the same offense. Whether it’s a fed grand jury or Congress, it’s the same offense.

The point is that it SHOULD happen if you simply observe the 1-2 punch for every playoff competitor.
———
That’s your problem. What YOU think should happen is not what a real GM thinks. None of your trade scenarios are ever based on an ounce of realism.
You demanded that Cashman trade for Grady Sizemore a week after his return after he hit a few dingers thinking he’ll be a perennial 30-30 guy again and not taking into account his health issues of the past few years.
As far as I know, Sizemore doesn’t even have a stolen base this season yet and he hasn’t hit a whole lot. Never mind the fact that he went on the DL again after his initial return.
How many disastrous moves do you think Cashman would have made by now if he took your advice and made all the moves you believe he SHOULD make?
There isn’t a Yankee prospect you wouldn’t trade for your newest flavor of the day.
Impulse trading is not how you run a major league ballclub.
The Mets aren’t getting a top prospect and all that salary relief for 3 months of Beltran. I just don’t see that……they could potentially get a nice player but I don’t see teams giving their one of their top guys for him.
There are many things I would rather the govt would spend our money on than prosecuting Clemens…education comes first to my mind.
Clemens has already been found guilty in the court of public opinion, and regardless of the outcome of this trial, that will not change.
Judge says he is leaning towards a mistrial.
Your tax dollars at work….
jimbaumbach Judge said he was leaning toward mistrial. #clemens
jimbaumbach It’s been 20 minutes since judge left the courtroom to deliberate over calling a mistrial. Or, in his words, “un-ring the bell.” #clemens

The prosecutor messed up, but this wouldn’t be a case of misconduct.
my understanding is that if there is a mistrial, the prosecutor can refile the case
================================
That’s my understanding as well. I hope they don’t though. I think Clemens is a low life bag of fleas and don’t doubt for a second he used PED’s and lied about it. Still, this kind of crap just isn’t worthy of the time and expense required to prosecute it.
I hope King’s right. Golson has earned a callup, regardless of his numbers vs. LHP. In a SSS, he’s hit well against lefties in the majors, going 6 for 20 or something with a pair of doubles.
Golson is probably the best defender throughout the Yankee organization, at least from the guys I’ve gotten to see. Melky Mesa could give him a run for his money (need to see more of Mason Williams to see if he’s in that select group), but that’s about it for the guys I get to see, all skills considered for OF defense (range, athleticism, good reads, arm).
Golson’s still young too & maybe Long can get him going against lefties. His OBP is also like .350 I think this season, that’s big for him.
“If Bonds walked, Clemens should too, for the same offense. Whether it’s a fed grand jury or Congress, it’s the same offense.”
How about the case shouldn’t have even been brought to trial in the first place? All of the things plaguing this country right now and it’s a priority to prosecute baseball players for lying? I think I speak for 99% of the country when I say “Who gives a rat’s behind??!!!”
They are discussing on mlbradio whether FOX has actually hurt baseball more than steroids over the last decade……their argument is that they black out games on saturdays and that the broadcasts are horrible. Can’t say that I disagree.
Prosecution’s chief witness, McNamee will probably see jail time for having uncapped syringes in his posession without proper disposal of hazardous waste!!!
See the split stats for Reed Johnson, Trade for him, dump Jones.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7118/splits
As I said yesterday……they should forget the trial and sentence Clemens to one year of a strict Vegan diet (after they teach him what it is)

//
Hahaha. That’s beautiful.
Seriously though…..FOXs broadcast of the all star game is awful….they said it was them who approached Selig about making it count because their ratings were down.
I do have to give McCarver credit for speaking highly of D-rob, and giving a plug to his High Socks for Hope charity during the ASG.
Joe Buck has no redeeming value that I can see. I still get annoyed remembering him discussing a Halloween costume from his youth during the 09 WS instead of talking about our wonderful Yankees.
blake – yeah, I saw that about the ratings. Bud needs to do something, because the AS Game has become a joke, and not just around here. The poor ratings, steadily going down, confirms that.
My suggestion – do away with having somebody from every team, as well as fan voting.

I disagree and here’s why. Many average Joe’s are prosecuted and jailed every year for perjury. The rich and famous need to be held to account as well. Clemens is getting his day in court and Rusty Hardin, who I know of from my Houston days, is a top-drawer very competent attorney with a great reputation. In a justice system attempting to be fair, everyone should be seen as equal in the eyes of the law.
Most national broadcasts are disliked because, try as they might, major networks don’t know the ins-and-outs of each team like the fans of that particular team might. FOX, however, seems to think America has an obsession with Joe Buck. Unless its football, he sounds entirely disinterested and bored.
I’m partial to the TBS broadcasts…Ernie Johnson isn’t great, but Ron Darling offers some pretty decent insight without sounding biased
Joe Buck has said that he finds baseball boring, and much prefers football.
The new crew for espn isn’t bad.
The ASG has outlived it’s usefulness. Take the 3 days and play games to shorten the season.
jimbaumbach Judge says, with what has occurred, can Clemens get a fair trial? #clemens
I think a couple of things are the start time and how FOX tends to go on endlessly before the game even starts…..usually like 40 minutes after the broadcast starts. Another is the interleague play has watered down the matchups….. and just how the game is played……its marketed as a game that matters…..but its not played that way and I think that puts fans off.
jimbaumbach I think it’s going to be very difficult to undermine his credibility, judge says of Pettitte. He hasn’t announced decision yet. #clemens

I tend to agree…at it’s inception it was a chance for fans to see the stars of every team on one field together. We see them all on sportscenter every night anyhow, so what’s the point?
The Yanks could surely use those three days to make up for some of the rainouts this year…

unbelievable
I think Costas should do all national broadcasts and especially big stuff like the WS and ASG. Buck did say that he would step aside during and let Scully do the WS before he retired if he wanted to…….we can only hope.
jimbaumbach Judge said now they have to address whether this can be re-prosecuted. Hardin asks for 10 days before a hearing on matter. #clemens
jimbaumbach Hearing scheduled July 29. #clemens
“Many average Joe’s are prosecuted and jailed every year for perjury.”
and as someone so accurately joked he other day, Congress lies to Congress everyday so perhaps the Pledge of Allegiance should be followed by swearing on the bible prior to ever session of Congress opening and the country would be in much better shape.

agreed. I’ve always hated Buck. And I’m still scarred from hearing him sing a couple lines from “When Doves Cry” during a NYY/Boston game at Fenway last year.
Mistrial……nice work. Now Andy can pitch!

Well, it took less time than I thought to get a mistrial. A multimillion dollar stable worth of attorneys and the government still screws it up. A stable is where they belong.
Let’s just say Joe is no Jack Buck…….agree that Darling is pretty good..
In a justice system attempting to be fair, everyone should be seen as equal in the eyes of the law
=============================
They should. I’m not sure Clemens is though. Didn’t Palmeiro lie to congress too? Maybe I missed his trial. Beyond baseball, lot of lying being done up on Capitol Hill, inlcuding by congress itself. I think they may be guilty of selective prosecution in this case.
really Erin/GB? You don’t think the new crew is better than Jon Miller and Joe Morgan?
kate-both crews suck IMO.
New Post: Pitching matchups in Toronto
Dan Shulman is a terrific pbp guy, one of the best.
Buck is very good on football, but I can’t stand his baseball
Up to judge if jeopardy attached. Don’t see how it doesn’t since the prosecution was presenting its case and a jury was already seated. No hard and fast rule, but it would be stunning to me if he determines jeopardy didn’t.
You also have a case for presecutorial misconduct since they edited the video after the ruling that certain parts had to be deleted.
I doubt it was unintentional
Kate, they had very little to do to improve on Miller/Morgan and that’s exactly what happened. They did very little to improve it…actually, they made it worse. You have a clown, a drunk and a guy that thinks he invented baseball. They would have been better off with Clarabell the Clown. WC Fields and Tony LaRussa.
