Chavez gets four hits in rehab game

Still waiting for a lineup, but there’s this bit of news from across the bridge:

Eric Chavez went 4-for-5 this afternoon in his second rehab appearance with High-A Tampa. All four hits were singles, he scored once on a home run, and he was lifted for a pinch runner after his last hit.

4-5 really means nothing considering it’s A ball, I’d like to know about any swelling or soreness tomorrow.

YF, there’s also a big difference between the way he pitched last outing & a couple of earlier ones where he couldn’t find the plate & had like 4 hbp. He finished so well the other night, I thought they should have got off their robot schedule & let him pitch the sixth. He was really throwing free & easy with the ball just disappearing to get those futile swings.

Yup, he looked good besides that second inning and was staying up to 93 late even though he had had that 40+ second inning. Kind of like Manny’s first inning the day before. Qualifiers are really important in terms of the results. In this case the layoffs were a factor. Also Manny reopened his blister. I saw the finger while at the Betances game b/c he was sitting across from me; it was nasty. Hope that doesn’t slow ManBan down like it did both of them earlier in the season. The FB command still needs work. Baby steps.

Trenton tied and went ahead in the 7th and then Whitley imploded.

I am no fan of the Rays, but the team deserves a half decent stadium. That dome is atrocious. In the Boston game a few nights ago, one of the players hit a foul ball which hit one of the lights and broke the bulb, leaving glass on the field. Watching the players and staff pick up broken glass was really sad.

They need a stadium with a retractable roof. Something comparable to what Seattle built would be great.

A similar stadium like in Seattle is perfect.

I don’t live in the area and am no fan of the rays, so I ask the following:
Does the city have a plan on the table to build a new stadium?
Are there enough funds available to build a new stadium?

I didn’t know about the broken bulb incident.
The stadium makes a joke of the game and Bud Selig continues to sit in his office
    and pretends all is well.

Speaks to having his timing down, which is kinda important in hitting.

YF, too bad they lost Schmidt. Good for him, though :)

does not matter how many his Chavez gets on his rehab assignment.
only thing that matters is how healthy he is.

he could go 0-20 & that still would not matter.
can he play 9 innings games on consecutive days?
is he so sore that he can’t play after 2 consecutive games?
those questions are much more important then how well he did
    at the plate.

Another Thunder comeback, walkoff single/RBI by Zoilo. He hasn’t missed a beat.

  11. yankeefeminista July 20th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Hopefully, Chavez is soon back up with the big club. If he can stay healthy in the stretch run his presence will be invaluable.

  12. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Zoilo has looked really solid. His base has expanded since I saw him in the Penn. He’s got a power hitter’s lower half now.

RiverAveBlues I’ll take that trade-off. RT: @SPTimesRays: #Rays Zobrist not in lineup, Joyce is

  14. Jerkface July 20th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Matt Joyce is hitting .179 .234 .348 .582 since June 1st, so I’ll definitely take that trade

  15. Warning Track Power July 20th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

freddy garcia better be on point today or else we are looking
    at another loss tonight.
going up against price is difficult enough with C.C. on the mound, but w/Freddy on the mound, defeating the rays in this game is that much more difficult.

If the Yanks get Chavy back at 100% and can add a solid 4th outfielder at the deadline… the bench is going to be ridiculous….

the Yanks get Chavy back at 100%

That’s what everyone has said for the past five years. I’ll not hold my breath on this one. Just come back and give us the occasional game at third and try to stay out of a body cast and I’ll be happy.

Is it just me or do we seem more shorthanded this trade deadline than the previous one?

I’m thinking the Yankees definitely need a #2 and a bat.

Do they have enough prospects for both?

    That depends on the #2.

If they empty the farm for Ubaldo, I would say there won’t be enough prospects left over for a bat.

If they target the cheapest #2 out there, they will have plenty of prospects to trade for a bat or call up Jesus Montero.

The cheapest #2 IMHO is Bedard and the Yanks can have him for prospects like Laird, Adams, Joseph…B prospects with hitting ability. Maybe JR Murphy.

Then again, maybe Cashman will avoid a major upgrade to the offense and tweak the bench, leaning on Chavez and maybe an upgrade at 4th OF over Andruw Jones.

In that scenario, he goes all-in on Ubaldo Jimenez.

  24. I Am Winning July 20th, 2011 at 4:14 pm

    Mell,

I would assume, that even if Pujols’ timing was off, he would crush the opposing pitchers at that level. So yes, timing is kind of important, but at such a poor level, you can’t really grasp if his timing is off just by looking at his line.

Nunez was considered a pretty good defender in AAA, and that’s WITHOUT Tex at first base saving him from one error a game. Yet, he has a lot more defensive experience than guys 2 levels below him.

Regardless, 4-5 is nice, but nothing I’m excited over. If he reports no discomfort tomorrow, that will excite me. He’s in the minors to recover, not because of poor hitting. That’s just my opinion on the matter.

  25. Mike_Boston July 20th, 2011 at 4:20 pm

Was Chavez DH or 3B today?

  26. 4 NYY July 20th, 2011 at 5:39 pm

Chavez has hit only 3 HR’s in his almost exactly his last 300 AB’s in the ML’s. Injured, I know.

So, can we expect any power from him, before he’s hurt again ?
