Is it just me or do we seem more shorthanded this trade deadline than the previous one?

I’m thinking the Yankees definitely need a #2 and a bat.

Do they have enough prospects for both?

    That depends on the #2.

If they empty the farm for Ubaldo, I would say there won’t be enough prospects left over for a bat.

If they target the cheapest #2 out there, they will have plenty of prospects to trade for a bat or call up Jesus Montero.

The cheapest #2 IMHO is Bedard and the Yanks can have him for prospects like Laird, Adams, Joseph…B prospects with hitting ability. Maybe JR Murphy.

Then again, maybe Cashman will avoid a major upgrade to the offense and tweak the bench, leaning on Chavez and maybe an upgrade at 4th OF over Andruw Jones.

In that scenario, he goes all-in on Ubaldo Jimenez.

Absolutely love the rumored Pitt/Oakland trade for the Pirates.

Willingham’s having a poor offensive year but a lot of that can be attributed to the park and adjusting to a new league – I think moving back to the NL will be a boon for him.

I also think Breslow can easily rebound from his poor half season.

If I could get these guys on the Yankees – I would do it.

The other reason I like this move is because the Pirates are adding. I’ll admit it, I’m rooting for Pitt’s magic carpet ride to continue – it’s a city that is dying for some meaningful baseball and it looks like they’re going to get it down the stretch. The Pirates though are being realistic, they’re not parting with a top prospect to win now – they’re sending a 30 year old spare part in Garrett Jones out to Oakland.

It’s a lateral move for the A’s – they save some money, Jones will finish out the season there and then be non-tendered.

  6. Howard July 20th, 2011 at 4:21 pm

As long as Boston doesn’t get Beltran, I’m happy with this deadline no matter what Cashman does, though I’d like for him to get a better option than Jones.

Will play again in Fenway in mid-September and end season at Yankee Stadium

for once we actually end the year at home?

I’d much rather have the home games up front than in the back. This year, the amount of home games have really helped in the first half. But yeah, it is nice to end the year at home as well. Knowing baseball, there’s probably a 12 game road trip leading into it on the West Coast.

  18. Yankee Trader July 20th, 2011 at 4:34 pm

    Bret–

Colon pitched a better game than Jimenez last night. I watched the last 1 and 2/3rd inning Ubaldo pitched. Both had 9 strikeouts. Colon more economical. Rockies ran Jimenez out there until relieved at 120 pitches in a Rockies blowout of the Braves. Jimenez gave up 2 solo homers and was clocked at 91 with max of 93 in his last inning, 94-95 the inning before that. Colon still throwing 94.

Cashman should not empty either of the two B’s or Montero for Jimenez, who won’t get traded anyway, especially for a Herschel Walker haul. Jimenez is no Justin verlander.

If you believe Colon will last the year, and is a dependable option against the Red Sox in the ALCS, more power to you. I happen to believe you do what you have to do to get Ubaldo every day of the week if he’s available, which I don’t think he is anyhow, so it’s all for not.

They don’t really have anyone worth getting for the Yankees.

Yes Breslow and Willingham would be useful players but they appear to be headed elsewhere.

Connor Jackson, Coco Crisp and David DeJesus are having even worse years than Willingham.

Brian Fuentes has been attrocious and I don’t trust him in a big spot.

I don’t want any part of Grant Balfour’s contract.

And firesale or no – I don’t see Beane parting with his top young pitchers.

  24. Chambliss July 20th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

I know that Ubaldo has a ton of talent, but so did Jeff Weaver.

If you are going to empty the farm, you have to get a true ace like Cliff Lee.

If they can get Bedard without dumping the farm, I would take that chance. He has pitched with success in the A.L. East.

The following players are mere months away from free agency: David DeJesus, Josh Willingham, Coco Crisp, Hideki Matsui, Conor Jackson, Rich Harden, and (if his option is declined) Michael Wuertz.

    As of last week-

    Crisp .312 OBA
    Matsui .212 BA
    Jackson .249 BA
    Harden 5.0 ERA 18 innings
    Wuertz-good stats ERA 2.96 BAA-.194 walks- 17 however in 27.1 innings

eboland11 Slight lineup change: Swisher now dh, Jones in right

  37. Bret The Hitman July 20th, 2011 at 4:48 pm

Willingham will do better in Pitt because Oakland is a pitchers park and Willingham was surrounded by terrible hitters.

Maybe David DeJesus would do better in YS surrounded by much better hitters than those that made up his supporting cast in Oakland.

DeJesus could start games in RF with Swisher moving to DH, squeezing out Posada.

DeJesus could start games in LF if Gardner goes on another cold streak.

    Cashman could dump Andruw Jones.

I think it’d be worth it to get Posada out of the lineup quietly and to drive Jones out of town.

  38. Mell July 20th, 2011 at 4:50 pm

Maybe David DeJesus would do better in YS surrounded by much better hitters than those that made up his supporting cast in Oakland.

    =======================

DeJesus IS supporting cast in Oakland.

  39. Bret The Hitman July 20th, 2011 at 4:51 pm

    Mell,

That’s not really fair to say when you look at his career numbers. Oakland’s lineup is anything but circular.

Will Freddy Garcia get any run support to work with tonight ?

  41. LGY July 20th, 2011 at 4:54 pm

DeJesus has a .289 OPS vs LHP. How is he replacing Andruw Jones?

Also, you can’t bring in a hitter with craptastic numbers like DeJesus and push Po out. If you are going to basically make Posada a bench player it has to be a clear upgrade like Carlos Beltran.

DeJesus may be just as feeble as Posada at the plate.

  42. blake July 20th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

“Will Freddy Garcia get any run support to work with tonight ?”

    Yes! Maybe! Hopefully!

  43. blake July 20th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Beltran Beltran Beltran. 412 OBP vs RHP.

  44. Bret The Hitman July 20th, 2011 at 4:58 pm

You can dump Jones with the arrival of DeJesus. That’s the move that makes the most noise. Then you can play DeJesus in LF if Gardner goes on another cold streak or you can give him an occasional start in RF making Swish the DH. You can pinch run DeJesus as well and use him as a late inning replacement. For the versatility factor alone he’s more valuable as a 4th OF than Jones. Chavez can get some starts at DH as well.

It can be done under the radar.

    Posada is cooked.

I don’t think it’s fair to say that about DeJesus at this point in his career. This is his first horrible season in a long time and he’s only 31.

That’s not really fair to say when you look at his career numbers. Oakland’s lineup is anything but circular.

    ===============================

It’s entirely fair. DeJesus has been a slightly above average player who does a lot of things OK, but nothing great. Not a great average guy, doesn’t hit for power, terrible basestealer, decent fielder. He’s nowhere near as good as anyone in the Yankees outfield and is about 17,238,004 miles from being a difference maker.

  47. Yankee Trader July 20th, 2011 at 5:01 pm

    Blake-

If Beltran goes to the Phillies and they also get one of Bell or Adams+ Oswalt is better +Worley was pitching a shutout against the Cubs they will be tough to beat in any playoff series.

  48. Laura - I Bleed Blue July 20th, 2011 at 5:01 pm

I may be naive, but I am surprised at Matsui’s bad season. I still say that he’d be a better hitter in our lineup. I have no proof of it, but if I say it enough, maybe that will make it true. :)

  49. LGY July 20th, 2011 at 5:02 pm

  52. Bret The Hitman July 20th, 2011 at 5:05 pm

Posada is cooked though. So is Jones. At least DeJesus has potential to rebound and revert to his career .285 avg. in a circular lineup in a ballpark that’s kinder to hitters than Oakland. He won’t cost anything and would allow Cashman to dump the chumps who are just collecting their pay checks and milking the team. DeJesus is about to become a free agent. He’s got something to prove. He’s never been on a winning team his whole career. Lightening in a bottle, possibly. You’re not going to catch that with Posada and Jones. DeJesus is a perfect 4th OF. He can play LF, CF or RF. He’s a good baserunner. He makes contact. He plays hard. At the very least he’d bring some energy into the clubhouse.

Look, this team needs some kind of shake up.

You can cheaply shake up the team by dumping Jones, Cervelli and squeezing out Posada.

Bedard + DeJesus are scrap heap guys with solid enough track records to warrant the opportunity in NY. Those are cheap options that could help a bunch or flame out. Whatever happens, they won’t cost major prospects and won’t stunt the progress of the younger players.

You go for lightening in a bottle and stay strong from within.

Otherwise, Colorado bends you over a barrel.

I’m not a fan of Melk in CF, but he would be really good in RF esp at Yankee Stadium.

    ————-

Yeah, poor instincts in CF – but he has the hose to move over to RF.

And while Betemit didn’t do well in a part time role here, when he plays every day he produces and he’s got to be a better defensive option at 3b than Nunez.

Either replace him with Montero or take comfort in the knowledge that Alex will come back and that will move Martin down.

Just to revisit the Beltran-Berkman trade comparisons from the last post…

Houston did very well in that deal in the sense that Berkman looked done last year and they got back their current a future closer in Melancon who’s pitching very well for them right now and will give them very effective last relief for the next 4-5yrs

and Jimmy Paredes the “low level non prospect” that Chip refers to is actually a switch-hitting SS/3B that has the potential to be a all star/gold glove caliber defender with very soft hands, great range and a cannon for an arm. He is an elite basestealer having stole 50 last season and with close to 30 so far this season. He lost a year to labrum surgery which also stunted the development of his power but that seems to be coming on as well this season as he hit 20 2bs, 8 3bs and 9HRs this year in about 80 games to go along with his 28 steals in his age 22 season in AA. He’s Cano’s size @ 6 1′ 200lbs but he’s got Nunez’s speed if not a touch faster with a good eye and power from both sides of the plate.

He may very well be their SS of the future in a year or two as well….FYI

As an aside – the Today Show had a list of chain restaurant foods you should stay away from. One of them is a sandwich that is four mozzerella sticks between two grilled cheeses.

Not for nothing – but if you sit down at Denny’s and order that – you are not at all interested in how unhealthy your eating habits may be.

    You got that right.

While they are at it why not bring back Proctor, N.Johnson and Wang too. A ‘MASH’ unit in the Bronx. LOL !

  90. m July 20th, 2011 at 5:36 pm

There are 4 OF in that lineup!

  91. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 5:36 pm

Cabrera’s hitting nearly .300 from both sides of the plate, about .100 points higher in slug from the left, but still, that’s damned impressive. But it sounds like KC is going to move Frenchy instead.

  92. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

I’d take Wang back in a heartbeat. But he might just respond with a certain hand gesture.

  93. champ809 July 20th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Someone asked Keith Law how Mark Melancon became this good. He said, “much the same way Ian Kennedy did, by going to an inferior league.”
    ******************************************************************

Law is a tool and just refuses to give credit where it is due when it concerns Yanks and former Yanks.

They were both always this good as their career #’s attest to. Both IPK and Melancon were standout elite baseball players at EVERY level of the game when they were given the real chance to play the game.

They came here got 40 innings and were moved. It’s cool because they were moved in an attempt to make the team better not dumped or given up on but the quality of the player was understood by both sides. In the case of Arizona they liked IPK more than the did Scherzer and would not have done that deal without him coming to him.

  94. ac1 July 20th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Nova to the DL will make including him in a trade more difficult.

  95. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 5:38 pm

The more Law opens his mouth, the dumber he sounds.

  96. bisonthrow July 20th, 2011 at 5:38 pm

well forget about betemit he was just traded to detroit

  97. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

I’m glad those guys got moved, for their sakes.

  98. m July 20th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

Law is a tool, but he dissed the NL more than he did the two former Yankees.

And to a certain degree he has a point. It is inferior. Just look at the collection of bats in the AL East alone.

  99. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

    Really? Thanks for that bison.

  100. champ809 July 20th, 2011 at 5:41 pm

Law just recently ranked Casey Kelly ahead of Bettances on his midseason list even though he admits that Kelly’s having another bad year!?!??!

I mean Bettances has better pure stuff has always performed better on the field has a higher ceiling and still Law is the only guy who thinks Kelly’s better than Bettances..

  101. LGY July 20th, 2011 at 5:41 pm

The Melky to replace Gardner idea floated on here was no good.

I’m liking this Melky replacing Po one.

  102. RS July 20th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Betemit was just traded to the Tigers

  103. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Just because some guy pitches in the NL doesn’t mean he can’t in the AL. You have to evaluate the player, not the league he plays in. Keith Law has nothing to offer on whether IPK or MM are talented enough to survive in the AL.

  104. m July 20th, 2011 at 5:44 pm

They’re talented enough to pitch in the AL, but their numbers (along with Clippard’s) are going to be more impressive in the senior league.

  105. ac1 July 20th, 2011 at 5:44 pm

Melky wouldn’t be here to replace Gardner, just rotate a bit, allow Swish and Grandy to DH once in a while.

Oh the dream of getting Betemit back is dead :(

  106. ac1 July 20th, 2011 at 5:45 pm

Law doesn’t know what he is talking about.
    Should know this by now.
Nothing like multiple bad seasons in the sox minor league system to still get a higher ranking anyway.

  107. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 5:46 pm

that’s entirely not the same thing. Lee supposedly didn’t want to pitch in the AL.

  108. Betsy July 20th, 2011 at 5:47 pm

  109. Bret The Hitman July 20th, 2011 at 5:47 pm

The Royals GM asked for Jesus Montero + Betances/Banuelos + Ivan Nova + Eduardo Nunez for Zack Greinke.

Melky is hitting .296, playing CF, on pace for 20 HR’s 20 steals, 90 RBI’s. He’s got a cannon. He’s 26 and under control for 1 more year in KC.

The Royals won’t just give him away.

  110. ac1 July 20th, 2011 at 5:49 pm

Girardi spoke to Nova, who said he felt better. Nova had felt pain in the area (ankle) where he was hit previously by a liner. Will skip turn
    ___

Since it’s the minors, he goes to the 7-day DL right and not the 15-day?

  111. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

I’d be surprised if KC trades Melky. I think they’d rather part with Frenchy & move Melky into RF if Cain can make the jump soon.

  112. J. Alfred Prufrock July 20th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Anyone have any idea why Montero was not in the lineup last night? The guy on the SWB blog doesn’t answer as swiftly as Ashmore.

    Chad?

  113. champ809 July 20th, 2011 at 5:59 pm

    m

the issue with Law’s statement is not the stating of the obvious that it’s easier to pitch in the NL than the AL particularly the AL East….but the unnecessary underhanded digg at former Yankee farmhands by mentioning IPK in his response to a question about how well Melancon is doing.
Also as a “scout” he should have mentioned that Melancon is actually pitching more like he’s always pitched as a professional player as his minor league #’s were off the charts. He totally dismissed 3 yrs of dominant performance in order to make a dismissive comment really directed @ the Yanks more than IPK or Melancon!

    A useless tool

  114. Bronx Jeers July 20th, 2011 at 5:59 pm

Nova has been put on 7 day DL.

He could pitch on July 30 DH against Baltimore.

  115. Benny Blanco July 20th, 2011 at 6:00 pm

The hypocrisy on this board is hilarious. Some of you were killing melky for brining cano down and not being focused and calling him a 4th of. Now you want him back? Lol.

  116. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:01 pm

Gardner is the best outfielder we have. I doubt he would be replaced by anyone. I think the Yankees need to get a bat. Too much dead weight. They aren’t going to change the lineup. Jeter and Posada scared them. Brett needs to lead off and Cano needs to bat third.

  117. stuart a July 20th, 2011 at 6:02 pm

cool. jeter at the top of the order. how can we lose.
derek should make an announcement that he is good with batting anywhere in the order the manager thinks makes sense.

also jeter does not need the money. him hanging on just for the money would be terrible.

  118. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Melky was always solid with the Yanks. He was never untouchable though. I always liked him. Doubt he gets dealt though.

  119. blake July 20th, 2011 at 6:02 pm

But Casey Kelly has pitchability and projectability and used to play SS

  120. rr212 July 20th, 2011 at 6:03 pm

Chavez with 4 hits. Wish he was in the lineup tonite. Don’t feel good about garcia v. Price.

  121. Giuseppe Franco July 20th, 2011 at 6:03 pm

Never was a fan of Melky, so I’d be fine with him staying in KC.

  122. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

Beltran would be the real guy to get.

  123. ac1 July 20th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

Brett needs to lead off and Cano needs to bat third.

    ___

I used to subscribe to this but i feel like everytime Gardner moves to leadoff, his average goes down. I still believe he should leadoff. Cano is the best hitter on the team, but even with tex batting .240, hit OBP is much higher than cano.

I feel like ARod should not have gone on the DL. He was hitting for average and had the highest one on the team. He was getting RBIs. Could have moved him 3rd and Cano 4th and Tex 5th or 6th.

He doesn’t need 40 homeruns to help the team, and it didnt appear that he would get worse as the season went on.

  124. Asd July 20th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

So now Swish is DH and Jones in right?

  125. Giuseppe Franco July 20th, 2011 at 6:06 pm

I don’t know how much help Chavez would be as a lefty hitter against Price.

Then again, Jones isn’t much help regardless who is pitching.

  126. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

    @AC1

Alex going down really does hurt this lineup. He was so productive even without the power. With him out till September, Yanks need a bat. Posada, Jeter, Martin and Tex are all struggling. Tex needs to get going or be dropped below Cano. We will see what happens.

  127. m July 20th, 2011 at 6:10 pm

    champ,

I see what you’re saying now.

But, truth of the matter is this. Kennedy was always going to be a 4/5 for the Yankees. Right now, he’s the D-backs #1, no? Or at the least #2.

So, while they dominated the minors and are doing well in the NL now, this doesn’t mean that they were going to be doing what they’re doing now, if they were still in the AL.

Maybe given the chance, they might have given a better impression in the AL. But part of the reason why those 4 pitchers (+Karstens) look really good is because they pitch in another league.

Sorry, sounds like I’m trying to argue with you. I’m not. Just trying to explain my thoughts on why those guys look really impressive.

  128. blake July 20th, 2011 at 6:10 pm

Alex wasn’t himself…..they can make the playoffs without him……if they want any chance to win it all they need him right and able to drive the ball.

  129. Jerkface July 20th, 2011 at 6:10 pm

    Karstens is smoke and mirrors.

  130. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:11 pm

Well he still put fear into pitchers. Once he gets healthy(if he does) the power will come back

  131. ac1 July 20th, 2011 at 6:12 pm

Alex wasn’t himself…..they can make the playoffs without him……if they want any chance to win it all they need him right and able to drive the ball.

    ___

    wasn’t himself?
    he was batting .300…
i guess batting 30 points higher than last season doesn’t matter?
and who’s to say he is right when he gets back?
it will take him time to get timing back and who knows if he will be fully recovered.

  132. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:12 pm

Those pitchers IPK, Melancon, karstens were never gonna be great in the al east. There is literally no stress for any of these guys and they are pitching in an inferior league. Karstens would barely crack this rotation. I like IPK though.

  133. blake July 20th, 2011 at 6:14 pm

    Ac1,

He was hurting….wasn’t moving well and hadn’t hit a homer in 88 at bats or something…..the longest stretch of his career. They made the right call because they don’t need him to make the postseason.

  134. m July 20th, 2011 at 6:14 pm

If 1H 2009 Hughes went to the AL, he’d be an ace. ;)

  135. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:14 pm

They need him to win in the postseason…

  136. blake July 20th, 2011 at 6:15 pm

Yes and they need him healthy and able to hit like he can.

  137. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:16 pm

Besides the power he was hitting just fine.

  138. Asd July 20th, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Lol. I still remember the hype about his potential playing 2 ways. Then he hit about .200 with maybe 1 double at most in A ball. That stopped that quick haha.

  140. m July 20th, 2011 at 6:18 pm

Melancon was the first cautionary tale for me. People were really excited about him, called him the closer of the future.

Speaking of, Soriano didn’t pitch well. If he continues to struggle, what do they do? They can’t trot him out to set up if his issues aren’t solved.

Robertson adding another pitch to his FB/CB could bode well for his long-term future with this team. (2 actually, the cutter and the changeup)

  141. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:19 pm

Soriano is gonna be back with the team regardless. If he struggles in the minors what can they do?

  142. Sweet Swinging Cano July 20th, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Let him be the 7th inning guy. Robertson is too good to go anywhere but up.

  143. blake July 20th, 2011 at 6:24 pm

    Tyler,
It was funny to read evaluations of Kelly…..everything was on what he projected to be and not.what he’d actually done…..because he really hasn’t done anyting yet.
