The rotation is the same for today, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Yankees have changed Thursday’s starter to Ivan Nova, leaving Bartolo Colon, CC Sabathia and Freddy Garcia to start the weekend series in Boston.

Nova just finished throwing a bullpen with Larry Rothschild.

    Good call….
Though i would rather have Colon/CC/Nova going against Boston.
Freddy has been great, but didn’t Boston whoop him last time?

  2. Crawdaddy August 1st, 2011 at 4:34 pm

Not surprising, giving the old dudes an extra day of rest.

  3. ac1 August 1st, 2011 at 4:35 pm

At least we get Lackey finally….

  4. Tyler August 1st, 2011 at 4:35 pm

    Lester-Colon on Friday
    CC- Beckett on Saturday
    Garcia- Lackey on Sunday

    Very winnable matchups.

  5. LGY August 1st, 2011 at 4:35 pm

@SI_JonHeyman: #rockies asked yankees for betances, montero, nova and hughes for ubaldo. #yankees countered with hughes & others

  6. Bret The Hitman August 1st, 2011 at 4:35 pm

This series against the Red Sox is going to be fun. I like what Girardi’s doing with the lineup lately. It seems he’s distributing playing time well and getting good production out of a number of guys. Jeter’ production is up lately. Posada’s. Swisher’s. Cervelli’s.

  7. UnKnown August 1st, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Lackey vs. CC on Sat. Is a win for sure right? right?

    Absolutely better be!!

    ____

IF that is close to true, then it is clear there is a HUGE yankee tax. Hughes and Nova are major league starters. Nova has 9 wins and Hughes won 18 last year. Did Cleveland have to give up two MLB starters and two of their top three prospects?

I say good call holding onto the system….

  9. stuart a August 1st, 2011 at 4:37 pm

they need to bring up an addtl position player……..

  10. Howard August 1st, 2011 at 4:37 pm

    Those are horrible matchups.

The over under on the third game might be 25.

I hope CC finally shows up against this team on Saturday.

Well, CC is overdue for a win against Boston so here’s hoping. ;)

  12. Howard August 1st, 2011 at 4:40 pm

It’s going to be crappy on here if we go up there and get pounded like last time. CC needs to get his head out of his arse against them this year, and match Beckett this time around.
    Garcia/Lackey is a crap shoot.
Has Lester been okay since coming back? I haven’t seen him.

  13. LGY August 1st, 2011 at 4:41 pm

Garcia is a much better pitcher than Lackey at this point.

  14. P August 1st, 2011 at 4:41 pm

    for july ..

    ellsbury .383
    pedroia .411
    agon .397

to say they are on fire is an understatement.

    our 1 -3

    gardner .289
    jeter .292
    Tex .262

it’s not bosox pitching I am worried about its offense. at least our bats are waking up a bit lately. let’s hope it continues.

may help to know that and have niesi and robertson ready after the 6th or so

Haha yeah me too. All of those games could go either way. Lester hasn’t pitched much since being back from the DL, CC-Beckett is a complete tossup as both guys have been lights out, and Garcia-Lackey looks like an 11-9 5 hour game.

  19. LGY August 1st, 2011 at 4:45 pm

  20. Erin August 1st, 2011 at 4:46 pm

AndrewMarchand Yankees going six-man this week. If Nova is very good again and Hughes is not, I don’t see how they justify Hughes remaining in rotation.

  21. Irreverent Discourse August 1st, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Boston hit 20 more home runs than the Yankees in July. THEY HIT TOO MANY HOME RUNS, THEY CAN’T POSSIBLY KEEP WINNING!@%@^

Let’s get through the White Sox series of 4 games before putting undue attention on the Buston Socks. Thinking a series ahead is not the way to go.

  25. LGY August 1st, 2011 at 4:49 pm

Has CC seen the sixth inning against them this year?

I think he went into the sixth once, then got pulled I believe. I think the other times, he was out by the sixth.

Why do people say Beckett is going Sat. against CC?? He pitches tomorrow. That lines him up for Sunday against Chief.

Lackey vs. CC on Sat. That’s why I say have to win that one.

  29. blake August 1st, 2011 at 4:51 pm

The Sox make it tough on Freddy because they won’t chase his slop…..doesn’t mean he can’t beat them but he needs to be on with his location from the start……

  30. SoS August 1st, 2011 at 4:52 pm

    What is up fellas!!

    Is Montero here yet?

Can we please give some love to Garcia!! How is he equal to Lackey? The man has a 3.2 era and has been way more than ever expected. Yet some still think hes going to fall off. Lackey is going to be one of the biggest albatross contracts ever. Its August folks. It is what it is. Cashman found two tweener pitchers to bridge the gap to the youngins. I give him lots of props for not panicking this past off season. If history means anything. We will dominate the sox these next two months. I call a sweep this up coming series. Take that to the bank.

  31. Vineyard Yankee August 1st, 2011 at 4:52 pm

Burnett is a disaster against the Sux. Colon, CC and Freddy is the best we got right now.

    April 10th – 5.2 ip, 9 hits, 4 BB’s, 1 ER
    May 14th – 6.2 ip, 7 hits, 3 BB, 6 ER
    June 9th – 6.2 ip, 8 hits, 2 BB, 6 ER

Seriously, do you guys even bother to look stuff up before you post? He has gone into the 6th inning every start this year.

Good thing nobody is asking you to “buy” it. The numbers are there.

May 15th, 5IP, 5 runs in the loss.
June 7th, 1IP, 4 runs in the loss.

That being said, baseball is a fickle girl. Weirder things have happened..

  36. Irreverent Discourse August 1st, 2011 at 4:56 pm

In fact, CC doesn’t have a start against ANY team this year where he was pulled before the 6th inning.

Like i said, it’s usually after 6 when it all comes apart….
I know the idea is to have CC go nine every game, but it cannot hurt to have the pen ready going into the 7th, even if CC is pitching well…

    May 14th ? 6.2 ip, 7 hits, 3 BB, 6 ER
    June 9th ? 6.2 ip, 8 hits, 2 BB, 6 ER

    Man…those numbers are fantastic.

Really sorry I didnt’ look them up. You’re right, he’s gone over five every time, and over six twice. My bad.

  40. Irreverent Discourse August 1st, 2011 at 4:58 pm

I can’t believe people are hating on one of the top 3 pitchers in the league, the wins leader and one of our mvps….

  43. Howard August 1st, 2011 at 5:00 pm

dogging him for ?not showing up? is ridiculous.
    ___________

Actually, no, it’s not. If you are an ace, and go into Boston and have your cake fed to you, you can be dogged for not showing up all day long. He’s great, for sure, but he’s yet to pitch against them as well as he can. That’s alll…no crime in saying that.

  44. Irreverent Discourse August 1st, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Howard – Not necessarily. CC has a tendency (like most pitchers) to give up runs early and settle down and shut teams down for 5-6 innings. If he gives up 4 runs in the first inning are you going to pull him?

  45. Against All Odds August 1st, 2011 at 5:00 pm

@ Bronx from that pic he does look thinner

  46. Irreverent Discourse August 1st, 2011 at 5:01 pm

Fair or not, he is judged by how he does against Boston and other top offensive teams, not the Ms and Orioles.

He has been very pedestrian against the Sox, Tigers, and Rangers this year – the 3 other playoff teams in the AL.

    LGY,

Its not even close. Glad to see they’re keeping nova on turn. We must take 2-3 from boston this time around..

    ===============================================

Why, there is no premium for winning the AL East. Both the Yankees & Red Sox are on a trajectory to make the playoffs, so there is no reason to go into Boston with an attitude like its the playoffs.

Major League Baseball has destroyed the concept of rivalries by having Wildcards. The NFL did the same thing when they added so many teams to the palyoffs. The Cowboys vs the Redskins in the regular season used to mean something because the loser would either be out of the playoffs of would miss out on a bye. The Yankees and the Red Sox are in the same position. As long as they both make the playoffs, it doesn’t matter who finishes first.

I’ve said all year that I doubt they’d put Garcia in a playoff rotation……but if the playoffs started today how could you keep him out?

Postseason started today I think you go:

    Sabathia

    Garcia
    AJ/Nova.

  60. G. Love August 1st, 2011 at 5:22 pm

    blake,

    I go

    CC
    Colon
Freddy (because his stuff is so different than Colon’s look wise)
    Nova

But we all know Girardi will give the 3rd start to AJ and Nova won’t sniff the playoff rotation unless he forces his way on it down the stretch.

I’m okay with Freddy in a big game. I know the Red Sox are going to hit him, but the man is one of the rotation stalwarts this season.

I expect some magic from him and Colon this post season.

If you want to see AJ not be in the rotation come playoff time, root for Nova to continue to force his way into the mix.

  61. SoS August 1st, 2011 at 5:23 pm

Anyone else think Nova is not going back down? It will be Hughes unless he blows people away that either gets put in the bullpen or goes to AAA.

  62. Nick in SF August 1st, 2011 at 5:26 pm

I think you have to give AJ the 2nd start because this year he understands how important he is to the team.

    blake August 1st, 2011 at 5:16 pm

    ==================================

I could be wrong, but I doubt that Montero will come to the Bronx before the September callups. Right now spots on the 25 man roster are tight and will get even tighter when ARod returns in 2 weeks. Its the dog days of summer and the Yankees wnat to carry as many pitchers as they can to avoid overworking any of them. Cervelli is a viable ML backup catcher right now and will not go down to the minors to make room for Montero. So, unless Posada retires or Andruw Jones gets hurt Montero will stay in Scranton.

  71. J. Alfred Prufrock August 1st, 2011 at 5:38 pm

Montero may come up soon because Stein Twins & The Suit may want to “show” the toys they let Cash keep until the next doggy is on the loose.

  72. J. Alfred Prufrock August 1st, 2011 at 5:39 pm

Posada’s hitting .330 in his last 29 PAs plus on basing at .370 clip. Montero can face lefties & split time behind the plate with Mr. Coltrane.

  73. mick August 1st, 2011 at 5:40 pm

If Hughes came in out of shape, something the Yanks know, then he must be the one to go down and work it out.
This is not the place to run another spring training, what does it accomplish?
You have 5 starters, Hughes is obviously the 6th.
Even now, they need another position player here. Carrying 13 pitchers is ludicrous.
Cervelli at 2nd, what’s next? SS?
Jeter out tonight mandates a callup and why isn’t there one? Cause Phil goes tomorrow…

Cervelli is going down for Montero when Jesus is called up. My prediction is Montero in the show by Friday.

    ===========================================

Can’t do that…the Yankees would be without a backup catcher with Francisco. If Posada could catch every 5th day it might be possible but, if he can’t catch, then Cervelli stays.

Do you people honestly believe the Yankees have kept Montero @ catcher even though they think he can’t catch?

It would be a Bill Cosby book titled “Don’t uninformed people say the darnedest things”.

  107. LockDown August 1st, 2011 at 5:52 pm

There’s so much silliness with fans rooting for SPs to fail and/or hoping some SPs push others aside. Why not just wish for them all to step it up now & in the playoffs & play the best games they can, instead of hoping for failure?

So what if Nova is not a SP now or in the playoffs? Does the world come to an end? Does Yankee Stadium sink? If his future as a pitcher over? ….

Jeez…. And here I thought maybe this was a great opportunity for Nova to learn, stress free, in order to become a mainstay in the rotation for years to come….

The yankees have a better chance to succeed if they are ALL on their A-game. I don’t see the benefit to wanting certain SPs to suck and lose games for the Yankees.

I guess the same people who want AJ shoved off the roster, probably cried & nearly slit their wrists when AJ pitched well in game 2 of the WS, which if he doesn’t win IMO they don’t win the WS. It would have been so much better if he never won that game, right (Sarcasm)

Wouldn’t be surprised if people are praying that either he, Hughes or whomever THEY don’t like fails so SP “X” moves up this all important numbers chart that some of you seem to lose sleep over everyday.

There’s just so much hate & negativity. Very ugly.

Montero would be the backup catcher.

    ==================================

Montero still has the training wheels on behind the plate. They Yankees need another backup catcher for the rest of the season. If Posada qualifies and catch then OK. If not, Cervelli stays. The fact that he gets to catch CC quite often tells you how much the Yankee pitchers respect him.

Montero will backup catch until sept 1, then Cervelli comes back and provides a safety net.

Can you imagine the wrath if Girardi pulled this? When Girardi does this, he’s a pathological liar. When Francona does it he’s savvy.

The club did not reveal that Buchholz had an MRI last week, even though it often does release such information, and as recently as last Friday, Francona was referring to the injury as a “muscle strain.” Asked last Thursday if the club was concerned that Buchholz would not be able to pitch for the rest of the season, Francona said: “Not right now. It’s not the simplest muscle strain we’ve ever seen.”

“no way cerveli goes down. CC pitched well when he is catching and cc is the only sure thing with this team.”

the yankees do no need the BS that only cervelli can catch a certain guy.

that just causes problems come playoff time.

girardi should get cervelli off sabathia right away to get martin ready to catch him in the playoffs.

    ===============================================

Thats not going to happen until September. The Yankees will be on the road through most of the regular season and are not going to leave themselves without an experiencede Major League backup catcher.

If however, Andruw Jones, Jorge Posada or Eric Chavez need to go to the DL the Yankees might bring Montero to DH…but are not going to hurt themselves behind the plate by putting Montero there.

phil’s velocity is down after a couple of innings, that means hes firing hard for an inning or two, exactly what he seems to be able to do. add in that he was good from the pen in 09 and i dont understand why he doesnt deserve a shot. hes shown an ability to get big outs from the bp, whereas wade and ayala have not yet.

  159. fantasygame101 August 1st, 2011 at 6:17 pm

As odd as it may, certain pitchers pitched differently to catchers. Even in minnesota, mauer does not catch a ceratin pitcher and also mccann does not catch a certain pitcher. The idea is catcher needs rest anyway so why not for a particular pitcher.

Did I see something the other day about Johnny Damon saying he wants to go into the hall wearing a KC Royals hat?

I’m not offended or anything by the KC part, but should he be talking about the HOF while he’s still playing?

Should he be talking about the HoF when he still hasn’t done enough to get in?

  208. mick August 1st, 2011 at 6:33 pm

WHY IS MY PAGE CONSTANTLY GOING DOWN?
    ANY ADVISE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
I CANNOT REFRESH WITHOUT THIS HAPPENING.

I don’t think they’ll bring up Montero because they don’t want him to lose trade value

    Sos,

Nice TRY luis!!! I know it is you.

    lol.

I.D. when we went to registration, I couldnt get it registered with them. The good thing about it is
    1. Its easier to spell.
    2. People rarely put them in a response anyways.

I actually tried years back to cut it down to the #3 so it would be even shorter. It looked like I was a big NASCAR guy so I reverted back.

    LGY,

None. I dislike them all equally.

There’s a bunch I can picture sharing a beer and watching a game. I think we’d all look at one another quite differently if we could see each other cheering (in whatever form that takes) live watching TV or at a game. The glue that binds us together is something you can’t see, so I think in some respects the internet damages fan relationships. Take me for instance, I might bash the living daylights out of a player – like I recently did with Nick Swisher calling him Swish cheez but if you could see me in person at a game, I’d go nuts if he made a big play or got a big hit. I remember saying that he sucks s*** at a game and then he hit a HR and made a diving catch. Some folks turned around and said “Still think Swisher sucks s***”. They were his neighbors. I was cheering and laughing. We all laughed. Frustration is a normal fan reaction but it’s often the only one you can observe online. That same game I started a Derek Jeter chant – in Atlanta. I was screaming at the top of my lungs the whole game. It was a blast. If you saw that in me or if I saw that in someone like let’s say Stuart a, I’d probably have a softer spot for ‘em if you know what I mean.

  218. m August 1st, 2011 at 6:36 pm

    ID,

Thanks for that. Damon was never very savvy with the media. ;) He should have deferred, something about gotta get the call first.

    mick,

Ugh. Using firefox, and that is driving me nuts. If Jeff could fix it so that I don’t have to click the back arrow to stop it from spinning that would be great. It was fixed for a while, but it started up again.

I’m using firefox and not having any issues. Sorry mick…

Do you have the most recent version?

  223. Irreverent Discourse August 1st, 2011 at 6:39 pm

I’m also not having any issues with firefox, with adblock and noscript both on.

  224. Irreverent Discourse August 1st, 2011 at 6:39 pm

mick – when you refresh it goes back to the same “place” you were on the page… maybe that’s all its doing?

  225. mick August 1st, 2011 at 6:40 pm

    LGY

what is the most recent version?

  226. Jerkface August 1st, 2011 at 6:41 pm

Adblock the electronics company ad, it pushes your scroll down.

  227. mick August 1st, 2011 at 6:42 pm

nope. It disappears, I thought I was refreshing too often or scrolling down while it refreshes but it seems to have a mind of its own. If I do nothing but refresh, it still goes down.

  228. LGY August 1st, 2011 at 6:43 pm

    mick,

    5.0.1

  229. mick August 1st, 2011 at 6:44 pm

    how does one adblock?

  230. Jerkface August 1st, 2011 at 6:44 pm

If you refresh it goes to your last post automatically. If you didn’t adblock, the big flash ad at the top of the page will further scroll you down automatically. Thats the culprits right there.

  231. mick August 1st, 2011 at 6:45 pm

how do I check the version?
    would it matter?

  232. joeman August 1st, 2011 at 6:45 pm

  241. luis August 1st, 2011 at 6:53 pm

    Hi everyone,

Let me get this straight!, now SoS it’s me??, lol!!!

  242. Irreverent Discourse August 1st, 2011 at 6:54 pm

mick – if you just hit “refresh” the page should load, then “pop” not scroll to the spot you were last looking at.

If you are not blocking ads, the page should then “move down” as the flash ad’s load at the top of the page, it would seem like you were scrolling up a little while this is happening… but this should be after it initially pops down to the place you were looking at.

  243. luis August 1st, 2011 at 6:55 pm

    SoS,

This is not Sherlock games….it’s more like Inspector Clouseau’s games ( Peter Sellers version )

  244. ron August 1st, 2011 at 6:57 pm

Now we know why cashman countered colorado with hughes & others after the rockies wanted to absolutely rob the yankees blind.

Point being,we are not on the inside & know very little & critisizing cash for that was stupid.

  245. mick August 1st, 2011 at 6:57 pm

I can’t take this anymore….I thought I was blocking ads….PC Richards is always up top but no ads ever pop in….I emailed Chad to tell Jeff, we’ll see what happens.

  246. RadioKev August 1st, 2011 at 6:58 pm

I love the non moves that Cashman has made. He put his money where his mouth is, in the farm system. It’s been years in the making, but it looks like we’re about to hit the real critical mass with our kids.

Working in Montero and Banuelos sooner than later will be the next step, and we’ll see from there.

I’m also interested to see how Jimenez handles. Obviously I’ve made a few points that we shouldn’t have traded for him. I don’t think he’ll carry the Indians into and through the playoffs, but we will see.

    luis is C R9.

nice job in the financial district when you can post on a baseball forum in the afternoon.

even better “marriage” ***and job*** when you stay on until 3 and 4 in the morning then head off the work. “luis” is probably thinking Venezuela is UTC-8. Someone better let him know it’s UTC-04:30.

    luis are 9.
