Hughes set to start Tuesday

The Yankees are still uncertain what’s next for Ivan Nova, but they are committed to giving Phil Hughes another turn in the rotation.

Hughes will start Tuesday night when the Yankees get back to New York.

Joe Girardi said he hasn’t mapped out a rotation beyond that night, and what happens with Nova after tomorrow night remains unclear.

If Nova pitches his ass off he gets another start, that simple.

  2. Irreverent Discourse August 3rd, 2011 at 6:34 pm

Nova will basically be up until one of the starters goes short and eats up the bullpen.

  3. MTU August 3rd, 2011 at 6:34 pm

This is a great problem to have.

  4. kd August 3rd, 2011 at 6:35 pm

it’s the lohud high calorie yankee blog!

good to see hughes getting a start. if he gets it going consistently like he did last night, the tone of the al east race changes

  5. mick August 3rd, 2011 at 6:36 pm

There’s a double header on 8/27 so he will pitch that week.

  6. West Coast Yankee Fan August 3rd, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Absolutely agree. This isn’t a problem, this is a gift.

  7. Warning Track Power August 3rd, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Congrats to Hughes for earning another start next week.

This 6 man rotation can’t last until the DH vs the o’s later this month.
Sooner or later Nova will have to be sent down and remain stretched out so he can pitch one of the two games vs the o’s or Hughes will have to be demoted to the pen.
Best case scenario is for Hughes to pitch a lot like he did last night and earn his spot among the 5 starters.
Nova can pitch down in AAA and be ready, stretched out and ready to pitch when/if needed.

  8. mick August 3rd, 2011 at 6:39 pm

Nova never deserved to be sent down.
It might come down to him or a bullpen guy.
Or he could move to the pen.

  9. PacoDooley August 3rd, 2011 at 6:39 pm

The important question is “who is likely to start the day game against the Angels on Thursday?”. It’s the only game I will go to this season, so I am anxious to see how the rotation works out and who ends up with a turn Thursday! I am guessing Nova is they stay with a 6 man rotation for a while.

  10. LGY August 3rd, 2011 at 6:39 pm

Stay on a 6 man for one more turn to make sure Hughes’ arm strength really is back then send Nova to Scranton until the double header.

  11. MTU August 3rd, 2011 at 6:39 pm

    Sudden death pitch off.

    Winner takes all.

    ;)

Nova can make the decision even more difficult by hurling an 8 inning gem in his next start. The Boston huggers on ESPN will still say the Socks have a superior staff top to bottom. Go figure.

  13. Joe from Long Island August 3rd, 2011 at 6:41 pm

I just hope that, whatever happens, Nova doesn’t get hurt in Rookie of the Year consideration. But, as a Yankees’ player, the voters probably will hold it against him.

I don’t like being cynical, but, I’ve seen this pattern before where the writers who vote discriminate – like when Hideki Matsui lost out to Angel Berroa, after they gave ROY to Ichiro.

  14. mick August 3rd, 2011 at 6:42 pm

If Alex comes back soon, who gets sent down? Could be Ayala with Nova to pen.
    Worth a shot—long relief?

  15. LockDown August 3rd, 2011 at 6:43 pm

I agree. Great problem to have. Before the season we had holes in our rotation and now we an extra pitcher and even 2 if you count Noesi. :D

I think you can go with a modified 6 man because Garcia and especially Colon needs an extra day or 2 to keep them fresh. Colon seems much more effective when he has those extra days and not as fresh when going too many back to back 5 day rotations and we really need Colon to be great in the post season. So Nova can help spell him those days.

You can also send Nova to AAA and bring him up for the DH and keep him in the 6 man to spell Colon & Garcia.

  16. mick August 3rd, 2011 at 6:43 pm

    I hate 8 pm games…too long a wait.

  17. MTU August 3rd, 2011 at 6:45 pm

    Just reconfigure the time zones.

    They’re arbitrary anyway.

  18. LGY August 3rd, 2011 at 6:45 pm

Alex probably takes Nova’s 25 man spot.

  19. West Coast Yankee Fan August 3rd, 2011 at 6:45 pm

Nova goes to AAA to stay stretched out in case someone goes down. He’s worthless sitting in the pen.

  20. Bronx Jeers August 3rd, 2011 at 6:46 pm

The Yanks could really have themselves a young rotation a few years down the road.

I just hope they dont let AJ keep a young guy in the shelf in 2013.

  21. mick August 3rd, 2011 at 6:47 pm

Joe is doing the right thing by creating this competition between Nova and Hughes.
I believe Nova throws a gem tmw…then what do you do?
    Keep doing it.

  22. Nick in SF August 3rd, 2011 at 6:48 pm

AJ will be Pieman Emeritus by 2013.

  23. LGY August 3rd, 2011 at 6:49 pm

    @jnorris427 Josh Norris
Manny Banuelos’ first strikeout in Triple-A. Again. Shaky. Sorry. http://bit.ly/ntz6z6 #Yankees

  24. mick August 3rd, 2011 at 6:51 pm

I can see Boston jumping all over AJ in 2014.
You know he will have a great walk year in 2013.

  25. MTU August 3rd, 2011 at 6:52 pm

    Just curious.

Anyone know if Manuelito has filled out a bit ?

What’s his weight these days ?

  26. Bronx Jeers August 3rd, 2011 at 6:54 pm

Boston wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot chowder ladle but I guess we can dream.

  27. blake August 3rd, 2011 at 6:55 pm

AJ will probably get pushed to the pen in 2013……when they’ll have CC, Hughes, and the newly signed Cole Hamels already in the rotation……..and Nova, Noesi, Betances, and Banuelos all competing for the final 2 spots :)

jnorris427 5 mins As promised, some sweet, sweet Montero home run http://bit.ly/n6F4bm #Yankees

jnorris427 4 mins Hard to tell in the video, but the ball lands beyond the flagpoles in the left-center. A bomb for sheezy.

  31. mick August 3rd, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Thought we’d get Hamels for next year.

  32. GreenBeret7 August 3rd, 2011 at 6:59 pm

For those that didn’t see Montero’s homer last night, here it is. It goes past the flag poles in left center.

AJ has had 2 great walk years.

  34. blake August 3rd, 2011 at 7:00 pm

The Phillies aren’t trading Hamels…..Yanks will have to outbid Philly for him.

  35. blake August 3rd, 2011 at 7:02 pm

    GB,

I read it was off a 97 mph heater.

  36. MTU August 3rd, 2011 at 7:02 pm

    Blake-

They stole Lee. Let’s steal Hamels.

That way we get to return the favor.

    ;)

  37. mick August 3rd, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Isn’t Hamels contract up after this year?

  38. MTU August 3rd, 2011 at 7:03 pm

    Blake-

That would explain why it travelled so far.

That fact was not lost on Cashman.

How many guys can turn around a 97 mph heater ?

    ;)

  39. blake August 3rd, 2011 at 7:04 pm

    Mick,

No….after 12….along with Weaver, Danks, Liriano and others.

Montero’s bat speed is right there with Cano….his swing is golden…….controlled fury.

  44. MTU August 3rd, 2011 at 7:07 pm

    Blake-

    Let’s see it.

    Bring him up.

  45. Carlo August 3rd, 2011 at 7:07 pm

If arod is suspended, how will the suspension work given he is on the DL?

  46. blake August 3rd, 2011 at 7:08 pm

    Mick,

He is an arb 4 in 2012…..they didn’t buy out all his arbitration years with his contract.

  47. UnKnown August 3rd, 2011 at 7:11 pm

Oh and as on cue the game tonight is on ESPN. Thanks Wally you Jerk.

Pedro Gomez is already talking about it on Baseball Tonight. Now we got that idiot who is probably going to start following the team. Last time Gomez was on he was making up lies about Hughes…

  48. Joe from Long Island August 3rd, 2011 at 7:17 pm

ESPN never lets the truth stand in the way of a good story. I believe that is the Hearst School of Journalism, but Chad is the professional journalist here and probably knows his history as well.

  49. Joe from Long Island August 3rd, 2011 at 7:18 pm

I believe the term is “yellow journalism”.

  50. Pat M. August 3rd, 2011 at 7:18 pm

blake……What was of interest is how Montero stayed off the down away junk that he was chasing earlier this season…….You just know that when he does arrive to the bigs, he’s going to get busted in and then down and away……

  51. BD (Boston Dave) August 3rd, 2011 at 7:20 pm

    thanks for the link GB7

  52. champ809 August 3rd, 2011 at 7:21 pm

AJ Burnett ain’t going to the ‘pen….best case scenario he dials in the 2nd half of the season and repairs his trade value and maybe he can be moved along with some cash for something useful.

His spot next year can be Nova’s

    CC
    Hughsie
    Bartolo
    Nova
    Noesi/Warren/Bettances/Banny

  53. mainesoxfan August 3rd, 2011 at 7:25 pm

Greetings Folks, I hope Hughes can find his stuff and I also Hope Buchholz comes back healthy before season’s end. Personally, I’d like to see the RS and Yanks doing battle at full strength in the post season.

As for the AROD gambling reports – Total BS IMO, unless there is something else in play that hasn’t beeen reported. He’s got plenty of money to gamble some of it away to Affleck and Damon.

He used to own them too. Now he’s basically a cheerleader when they go to Fenway.

  55. GreenBeret7 August 3rd, 2011 at 7:26 pm

Blake, that’s the speed that the pitch was clocked at. It was a nice at bat with all of the fouls and down in the count. That sound, though.

Anyone hear of any weather reports tonight for chicago? I would hate to have delay because of a radar, or animals in hiding because they sense bad weather, or maybe the sox owners arthritis acts up when rain is on its way delay.

Agreed!! The days of players taking this rivalry as seriously as the fans is dying. I liked it a lot better when Fisk and Munson were always stoking the fire….

“Montero’s bat speed is right there with Cano”

    blake

just from seeing it tv, i would be shocked if montero’s highest swing speed wasn’t several miles per hour higher than cano’s highest bat speed.

bat speed is relative to acceleration into the ball. two hiiters can have the same bat speed on impact a, but if one is accelerating and one is decelerating the ball off the bat will have a very different ball speed.

you want to have your bat accelerating into the ball. it doesn’t help to have it peak before it gets to the ball. some hitters do that. golfers too. it’s why some players or golfers with low swing speeds actually hit the ball father than others with a higher swing speed.

  62. blake August 3rd, 2011 at 7:46 pm

    Randy,

    Good stuff….all true.
