Report: MLB “very seriously” investigating A-Rod’s gambling

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 03, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This story initially came and went without a ton of attention, but now it seems that MLB is taking a serious look into allegations that Alex Rodriguez participated in illegal, high-stakes poker games.

According to ESPNNewYork, Rodriguez could face suspension because he had been previously warned by the Yankees and the league to control his gambling.

“We’re talking to people involved in the investigation and we’re taking this very seriously,” an MLB executive told ESPNNewYork. “Because he had been warned about this before, I would say a possible suspension would be very much in play.”

Rodriguez allegedly participated in a series of underground poker games with several high-profile celebrities.

    Arod makes zillions, likes pretty women and poker games. Did he test positive for the alleged cocaine? If not, buzz off.

    Nick,
    Mick thinks he’s in no way affected by advertising in his buying decisions, and maybe he is a singular person. Doubt it though, which is why a multi-billion dollar sophisticated ad industry thrives.

  33. MTU August 3rd, 2011 at 3:22 pm

    The only way the Sux could win it all is to frame Alex so he is kept out of the Yankee lineup.

    So they have the Drooler leak some BS rumor to Selig who is jealous of A-Rod because he is a real Man and likes to do Manly things.

    And then the BS just starts flowin’ downhill yielding to gravity.

    Conspiracy.

    :)

  34. West Coast Yankee Fan August 3rd, 2011 at 3:22 pm

    Man I am OK being a homer but anyone that doesn’t get why this is an issue and a problem must have their head in the clouds.

    “In 2005, Rodriguez had been warned about gambling in underground poker clubs by the Yankees and by baseball commissioner Bud Selig, both of whom were concerned that possible involvement with gamblers who might be betting on baseball games could result in a Pete Rose-type lifetime ban from baseball.”

  35. hardwired7 August 3rd, 2011 at 3:23 pm

    Hey Bud, how about you spend more time worrying about the sad state of umpiring in baseball and less haranguing one of the stars who actually helps sell tickets???

  37. tomingeorgia August 3rd, 2011 at 3:24 pm

    Mick,
    Perhaps you’re not an occasional beer drinker who wants to impress. The key line for the intended audience is, “I don’t always drink beer, but when I do. . .”

  38. Tyler August 3rd, 2011 at 3:24 pm

    I don’t have a twitter but part of me wants to get one just so I can send tweets to all of the baseball writers at ESPN and annoy them about the final results of Ortiz’s self-investigation into his milkshakes…

  39. waka flocka August 3rd, 2011 at 3:25 pm

    here is a hint then: don’t read the twitter account/twitter side bar.

  40. GreenBeret7 August 3rd, 2011 at 3:26 pm

    If MLB wants to disassociate it’self from gambling, end all advertising with casinos and make the owners sell their interest in horse and dogtracks and sell of their race horses.

  51. West Coast Yankee Fan August 3rd, 2011 at 3:30 pm

    A-Rod should be suspended just for arrogance and stupidity.

    1. Admitted steroid user.

    2. Warned previously about gambling amidst concern of possible involvement of gamblers who might be betting on baseball games.

    3. Ongoing federal investigation of Dr. Anthony Galea who treated A-Rod.

    4. Rodriguez still employs his cousin, Yuri Sucart, after fingering him as the “mule” who transported his performance-enhancing drugs in 2003 after his steroid usage was revealed.

    5. New allegations of illegal poker game participation including a violent outbreak and cocaine use at a game he might have attended.

    West Coast and I have battled about this before. I don’t have my head in the clouds and yes, I don’t see why this is an issue. He’s not gambling on baseball. He’s betting his own hard earned money. It’s not affecting his play on the field, his teammates or the Yankees. This is just further proof of the hatred that exists towards Alex. The fact that it’s so wide spread is very disheartening.

    “Warned previously about gambling amidst concern of possible involvement of gamblers who might be betting on baseball games.”

    You keep saying this, but continually repeating it doesn’t make it any more valid. The equivalent of this story is every player or umpire walking into any casino on this planet. You can bet on baseball and you’ll be sure to find a ton of people who feverishly bet on baseball.

    When it comes to betting on baseball, A-Rod should be the least of your worries. If A-Rod ever came within 500 feet of placing a bet on a baseball game, he’d be ratted out in a minute. However, most of the umpires who make a much more modest salary would never be spotted or turned in until it was too late.

    But yeah, keep investigating A-Rod for playing poker with Ben Affleck and Spiderman. But don’t be surprised when someone is caught betting again and it isn’t the highest paid player in the game.

  78. GoldGlove9486 August 3rd, 2011 at 3:39 pm

The fact of life is there are things that you must follow in an organization, team, etc even if you do not approve of them. The only way to not be bind by them without consequences is to leave the organiztion or team etc.

    “The heavy price of making millions of dollars? Unless you’re talking physically, and honestly I find that dubious. Guy is in his mid thirties and had a physical defect in his hip from birth.”

    There’s no proof that Alex’s use of PED has anything to do with his hip. I was referring to the constant attacks that he gets. Do you think MLB would be so interested in his gambling habits if he wasn’t baseball’s most hated man? Part of that is due to him being a former user. Yes, a lot of it has to do with the money he makes, but the using only made matters worse. IMO, all the money in the world isn’t going to change the way Alex is perceived and to me, that’s something he will continue to suffer through.

    I also encourage all young players to use steroids like Alex did. Apparently you can still make the HOF as a user. The HOF should set an example with Alex and allow him into the HOF. That would encourage all young athletes to shoot for the stars. There are no consequences. Do steroids? You’re still in.

    They’re not going to be able to bust him for playing cards at somebody’s house in Beverly Hills. Justice Scalia hosts a poker game at his house. How is this different?

    If this report were actually about a game at an unlicensed underground club, where the house takes fees for hosting (which is what he was apparently warned about) then I’d be more concerned.

    Until MLB can find a passage in the US penal code that says that playing cards is illegal, I don’t think they have a leg to stand on. If they try to suspend him, I hope that Alex puts up a fight. I’m tired of him being singled out for things that a lot of other players do. Apparently, it’s only a crime when Alex does it.

    It’s easy to say that when you have 0% chance of ever having to be in that position. From what I’ve seen and read about Alex, he very much cares what people think of it. It probably comes from being abandoned by his father at such a young age. I’m sure he enjoys his millions, but I’m also sure that he wishes he wasn’t so hated by the masses, who in all honesty, don’t even know him.

    If after the Pete Rose fiasco, baseball fans cannot understand why MLB does not countenance players being involved with high-stakes off-premises gambling and associating with the unsavory characters who routinely inhabit that world – then they are clueless and letting their loyalty to a home player (admirable in many ways) cloud their judgment and appreciation for the integrity of the game.

    “According to the baseball executive, MLB has yet to positively determine that Rodriguez took part in the games, which reportedly included actors Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. “

    If after the Pete Rose fiasco, baseball fans cannot understand why MLB does not countenance players being involved with high-stakes off-premises gambling and associating with the unsavory characters who routinely inhabit that world – then they are clueless

    Mark Prior suffered a bruised left forearm Wednesday when he was struck by a batting practice ball.
    Prior is still rehabbing a back and groin injury, and hasn’t made an appearance in a minor league game since April. He’s unlikely to make it to the majors this year. Aug 3, 4:07 PM

    CC, Colon and Garcia are finished products…
    Burnett is not pitching that much different than he was last year. He’s just getting slightly better results.
    He didn’t notice that Hughes was dead in the water in spring training…
    Or that Soriano was dead…

    I can’t be too pleased with any supposed “changes” he’s instilled. He has some time to win me over though, with Hughes curveball.
    ———————————-

    I think they noticed that Hughes’ stuff wasn’t there in spring training but there was hope that he would build it up and show it in New York. I don’t think they realized the full extent of the problem but isn’t that pretty tough to do in spring training? A lot of guys show diminished stuff in spring training and improve once they head north…

    ===========

    Gotta agree with you here. It’s amazing how his pitching this year compares to last, whereas last year was considered a complete and utter failure. He’s playing the same game he always does of walking a ton of guys, but he’s been lucky with avoiding that big inning for the most part.

    Then again, I also thought he was somewhat unlucky to an extent last year. Not that he wasn’t bad, but nothing made me thought he was pitching drastically different from ’09. Just terrible results

  207. bruceb August 3rd, 2011 at 4:25 pm

    Boy, this country is so self-righteous when it comes to gambling. It’s a different story in the UK and Ireland where you’ll find a betting shop on every High Street. A-Rod can do what the hell he likes with his money. There’s nothing to indicate he has a gambling problem or addiction but if he does, I can recommend a few GA meetings.

    Here is a baseball question ……how much of the success, and perhaps unexpected success ,of the pitching staff this year can be attributed to Larry Rothschild?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A considerable amount. He has the attention of all the pitchers and makes himself available to all of them. Obviously he doesn’t need to to anything but converse with C.C. and Mariano.
  217. LGY August 3rd, 2011 at 4:29 pm
    I don’t think CC is a finished product.
    His K rate dropped as a Yankee and he was pitching to contact more under Eiland.
    Rothschild preaches strikeouts and CC has changed his style of pitching a bit to go for more of them.
    I think Rothschild has helped CC a lot.
  218. Tyler August 3rd, 2011 at 4:30 pm
    The thing that always has bugged me most about AJ is his tendency to give back leads. Always seems like after the Yanks take the lead, he’s walking the first batter on 4 pitches. But he has done a much better job this year not letting those innings get too far out of control. I will give him that.
    Someone should analyze the majors for starting pitchers giving up runs in the same frame as their offense scoring runs (or after if they hit in the bottom) and then check Burnett against that average
  226. Yanks78 August 3rd, 2011 at 4:32 pm
    “how much of the success, and perhaps unexpected success ,of the pitching staff this year can be attributed to Larry Rothschild?”
    I think the main reason he brought in was for Hughes and the other young guys as well as fixing Burnett.
    Don’t know how they view his work on Burnett. He is better than last year, but I think everyone expected that. He has settled in nicely as a #4 guy. Still has the tendency to implode and is still wild and unpredictable. He actually was very unlucky last year, so his numbers were not as bad as he was.
    Colon came out of nowhere throwing mid 90s FBs and nasty 2-seemers. That started in the Dominican League it seems and thats what prompted Cash to sign him. Don’t think Rothschild can take credit for him.
    Garcia is interesting. His peripherals suggest he has been somewhat lucky. But at his age, considering he is a slop thrower, how much can a PC really help him? His style is very simple to evaluate – gets ahead and gets hitters to chase out of the zone and has to have his good command to survive against good lineups. He is smart and savvy. His HR rate is down considerably from last year, which has helped him a lot too.
    What he does with Hughes will be very telling.
I hope there is nothing to it and he will be cleared. I also hope going forward that A-Rod will understand that he needs to be more aware of what he does and the appearance of impropriety.
    Pessimistic prediction for AJ:
    Living in St. Louis, I've been watching this series pretty closely. It's been very strange. Even some have been accusing the Brewers of stealing signs (they are close to 30 games over 500 at home and way under on the road).     Wrong. You are ignoring past behavior and past warnings about being involved with such high-stakes games. MLB has every right to protect it’s brand and image by making sure that it’s players do not associate with known gamblers who may very well bet on baseball. The combination of high stakes games, celebrities and famous athletes is sure to attract the kind of unsavory characters that baseball is smart to be concerned about.
  249. blake August 3rd, 2011 at 4:43 pm
    I think its difficult to quantify….but I think Rothschild has definitely been a positive and I agree with what LGY said regarding CC….he’s noticeably going after Ks more this year. I just like his style better……miss bats and power pitch, that’s what wins in postseason play. Also ….AJ has been much better this year…..the numbers may not bear it out but he’s given them.a chance to win in almost every start…..how many were over by the 2nd inning last year? His K rate is up and his swing and miss % is also up and he’s almost already matched his number of 5+ inning starts from last season.
    Rothschild has been a big success IMO
  260. pft2 August 4th, 2011 at 1:17 am
    Only those hosting the game and taking a cut are doing anything wrong, the players are not doing anything illegal so long as they pay taxes on their winnings.
    If King Selig warned players against doing something not against the rules they can tell him to STFU. I expect the MLBPA would take a stand if the new chief was not in the tyrants backpocket.
