TIME/TV: 8:10 p.m., YES Network

WEATHER: Nice and sunny all day today. Looks like we’re leaving Chicago on a high note in terms of weather. Very slight chance of rain with temperatures in the 70s.

UMPIRES: HP Marvin Hudson, 1B Tim McClelland, 2B Ted Barrett, 3B Brian Runge

THAT’S A BIG NUMBER: The Yankees have scored at least 17 runs in three games this season, matching the total for the other 29 teams combined in 2011. It’s the Yankees most such games in one season since 2005, when they also did it three times. They’ve posted all three totals in their past 13 games, becoming the first Major League team to score at least 17 runs three times over a span of 13 games or fewer since the 1993 Detroit Tigers, who did it three times over a 10-game span from in April. That’s all according to Elias.

LIKE HIS IDOL: According to Elias, last night Derek Jeter became the second player since 1900 to record two five-hit games in the same season at age 37 or older. The other was Dave Winfield, who did it at age 39 in 1991.

IT’S BEEN A WHILE: The Yankees had three players with at least four RBI last night (Curtis Granderson had five, Robinson Cano had four and Eric Chavez had four). It was the first time the Yankees had three players reach the mark in the same gave since a 17-3 win on September 13, 2005 at Tampa Bay (Jason Giambi had five, Hideki Matsui had four and Jorge Posada had four).

IN CLOSING: The Yankees are 23-12 in series finales this season. They are 10-6 in series finales on the road.

UPDATE, 8:22 p.m.: I never once thought that was a home run until it landed in the bullpen. Looked like a double at best off the bat, but Cano must have hit it harder than it looked. It’s a 1-0 Yankees lead in the second.

UPDATE, 8:53 p.m.: Nova was either crossed up or just made the worst pitchout imaginable. That moved the lead runner into scoring position, and a single and sac fly later, that runner has scored to tie the game 1 in the third inning.

UPDATE, 9:15 p.m.: Every professional baseball player has heard a hundred times that sliding into first base is slower than running through the bag, but every now and then, they simply cannot help themselves. Martin is out on a sliding play at first and it’s still 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

UPDATE, 9:21 p.m.: Because of Monday’s off day, it’s really hard to imagine the Yankees sticking with a six-man rotation after this weekend. It would throw everyone’s routine into disarray, but Nova looks awfully good tonight. How do you tell this guy that he’s going to the bullpen or Triple-A?

UPDATE, 9:29 p.m.: Gotta execute that play quickly and accurately to get Gardner at the plate. He scores on a ground ball to first, and the Yankees are up 2-1 in the sixth.

UPDATE, 9:32 p.m.: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player do what Juan Pierre just did. With Eric Chavez playing extremely close to the plate, he clearly wasn’t planning to lay down a bunt. He obviously meant to square up and pop the ball over Chavez’s head. Perfectly executed for a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth. Must say, that was pretty cool.

UPDATE, 9:36 p.m.: Strikeout, throw out. Pierre is gunned down and Nova is through six, still a 2-1 Yankees lead.

UPDATE, 9:51 p.m.: RBI single by Posada, sac fly by Martin, and the Yankees lead is 4-1 in the seventh. No one currently getting loose in the Yankees bullpen. If Nova can give them one more, then it’s Robertson and Rivera to close out the win and send this team to Boston.

UPDATE, 10:30 p.m.: Robertson gets the last out of the eighth, and the Yankees still have a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are losing in the ninth.

    Go yankees!

    Humber: 4 1/3 – 6 ER

  5. BD (Boston Dave) August 4th, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Phillip Humber – you’re the next contestant on “Can you keep the Bombers under 10 runs?”

Go SuperNova! Go Jete! Go Yanks!

One of the lineups I think you will see a lot of when Arod returns is:

    Jeter
    Granderson
    Tex
    Arod – DH
    Cano
    Swisher
    Chavez – 3B
    Martin
    Gardner
    ????????????-
when Arod comes back & 100% he?s playing 3rd maybe DH once a week

    ——
Yes Joeman once he is 100% healthy. But I’m guessing the first 2-3 weeks you will see that lineup more than most others. Put Montero/Cervelli in 8 hole and Nunez in Chavez spot from time to time against lefties initially.

  9. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Strike zone is upside down today, Nova might be in trouble if the Umpire doesnt call low strikes.

  10. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Nova looking for yankees to make decisions tougher..

  11. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

I say as the Umpire calls a strike on a pitch lower than Humber’s first pitch.

  12. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

what can they do about nova?
how bout skipping burnett’s next start and keeping nova there….

  13. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Derek still makes the play coming in on the ball as well as anybody….textbook.

  14. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Nova doing the opposite of burnett..

  15. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

    96 mph heat!!!!

  16. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

don’t think konerko is ready to be in the lineup, seeing how he just ran out of the box.

  17. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

nicely handled on the apparently rocky White Sox infield.

  18. paulp August 4th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

How can Cashman justify starting AJ over Nova?

  19. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Nova with the ERA below 4.

    Go Nova!!

  20. Pat M. August 4th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

If today was Hugues’s bullpen session it would interesting to see how is arm strength responds after his outing the other night……..Ivan looks good, and I still say he’ll be in the top 5 ROY voting come November

  21. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:22 pm

The Yankees best rotation right now is probably Sabathia, Colon, Garcia, Hughes, Nova if you just take the 5 best guys.

  22. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 8:22 pm

    Come on and solve humber!

  23. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Nova looking for yankees to make decisions tougher.

    *************

I don’t think there is a decision to be made. Nova will go to SWB to stay stretched out and if someone goes down or falters he will be back.

  24. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

    Mark..stop chasing the slop…

  25. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

    whoa, that was a bullet.

  26. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

how good is cano?? MY GOD!

  27. pkyankfan69 August 4th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

    Cano is the man

  28. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

    C A N O !!!

  29. yankeefeminista August 4th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

    Cano, uh dontcha know!

  30. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

Nasty swing….when Robbie.goes the other way he’s tough.

  31. luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:26 pm

    Cano!!, he is on fire!,

There is no way to justify keeping AJ on the rotation…..except the amount he is being paid to pitch…

  32. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 8:26 pm

wow don cooper is really something, looks like he’s got humber living up to that first round potential, I bet in typical mets karma he will throw a no no at some point in his career

  33. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 8:27 pm

Might be the longest single in history

  34. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 8:27 pm

Can’t hit a single much harder than that.

  35. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 8:28 pm

    Thats a damn shame , WCYF…damn shame

  36. luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:28 pm

    That was a long single

  37. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 8:28 pm

    luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:26 pm

    Cano!!, he is on fire!,

There is no way to justify keeping AJ on the rotation…..except the amount he is being paid to pitch.

    *************

No way AJ gets yanked from the rotation. Not a chance.

  38. Gary August 4th, 2011 at 8:30 pm

Looking forward to A Rod coming back so Chavez can DH and Posada rides the pines where he belongs.

  39. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 8:31 pm

Why does Kay sound so surprised that Chavez is running on 3-2 with 2 outs?

  40. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 8:31 pm

Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 8:28 pm

    Thats a damn shame , WCYF…damn shame.

    ***********

What logical choice do they have? Phil Hughes is a starter, he’s not going to the pen and besides, both he and Nova have to stay stretched out. Nova has to be the one sent down to SWB. The only possibility I see for that not to happen; is if Nova is lights out tonight and Hughes really implodes on Tuesday.

  41. pkyankfan69 August 4th, 2011 at 8:31 pm

Too bad Posada left his PF Flyers at home

  42. luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

    WC,

You are right….But still he should be the one fighting for his rotation spot, not Nova.

  43. pkyankfan69 August 4th, 2011 at 8:35 pm

    Nasty curve to get Quentin

  44. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 8:35 pm

    luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

WC, You are right….But still he should be the one fighting for his rotation spot, not Nova.

    ***************

The Yankees have a long and storied tradition of staging “not-so-real” competitions; like Hughes and Joba in spring training 2010.

  45. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 8:35 pm

of course they won’t get rid of aj, but they should consider skipping one start, and getting his head together. he hasnt won since june, and last night was just awful…

  46. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 8:36 pm

It’s sad that Nova has to go back to the minors while AJ gets a free pass

  47. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 8:36 pm

    Nasty.

  48. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:38 pm

Me thinks Ivan wants to stay…….

  49. luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:38 pm

2 innings 19 pitches, not bad at all….

    WCYF,

Unfortunately true, if this was a true competition it should be AJ and Hughes fighting for the spot…..And Hughes should win it if he gaines consistency

  50. Joe from Long Island August 4th, 2011 at 8:39 pm

ac 1 – I don’t think it was a matter of AJ’s head. I think it was more his ability, at this point in his career. That, I think, is more concerning. Of course, I could be wrong, but that’s my concern.

  51. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:41 pm

    Joe,

I agree…..being able to throw the ball where you want is part of the pitching ability and AJ has always struggled with that…..only now his stuff doesn’t mask it as much.

  52. luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:42 pm

    Joe fromLI,

I always liked AJ, he really cares, but i have to agree that probably the ability is not there…

  53. Gary August 4th, 2011 at 8:42 pm

    Ground ball game so far

  54. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 8:42 pm

then skip him because nova is better right now, and use that as an excuse.

  55. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 8:44 pm

The Yankees can’t continue the six-man rotation that’s over. I see this not as a problem but as a really great situation to be in. At least right now, we have six healthy starters with Noesi, Phelps and Warren in the wings. (And the pen looks tough with Mariano, Robertson, Soriano, Wade, Logan and Ayala.)

  56. luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:44 pm

    ac1,

Easier said than done, we might see that next year, but right now i don’t think so..

  57. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 8:46 pm

    ” Ba humber”

  58. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 8:46 pm

    Slider? is nasty

  59. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 8:46 pm

Nova getting some K’s on that cutter/slider

  60. Gary August 4th, 2011 at 8:46 pm

Shame that AJ didn’t get the win. I think he got the big lead and then starting pressing as the Sox started to come back. Beyond his comments, I think last night was a big downer for him and didn’t do anything for his confidence. Pitchers can’t perform well with doubt in their mind.

Why is Garcia not a candidate for a Nova replacement?

  61. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Why is Garcia not a candidate for a Nova replacement?

Because he is a better pitcher than AJ Burnett

  62. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Why is Garcia not a candidate for a Nova replacement?

    ——————–

    Because he’s pitching to a 3.22 ERA?

  63. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 8:50 pm

    wow what happened there Nova/Martin????

  64. luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:50 pm

    Well, that sucked

  65. BD (Boston Dave) August 4th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

I’m pretty sure the Sox pitch Franklin Morales every game.

their “top” lefty is gonna have a dead arm soon

  66. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Well that was kinda bad…..cross up?

  67. Gary August 4th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Wow this inning turned pretty quick

  68. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Garcia has been a lot.better than AJ this year…..he was last year also.

  69. luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:54 pm

    blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

no, a very bad pitch out, lol

    Gary,

    Garcia has pitched incredibly well

  70. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Thank god it was pierre hitting that

  71. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 8:55 pm

    Nova got lucky right there…..wow

  72. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Bedard the savior pitching a real gem tonight.

  73. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 8:55 pm

lol. Pierre doesn’t even have warning track power.

  74. luis August 4th, 2011 at 8:56 pm

I didn’t like the squeeze play from the WS, on the third inning??, are they so down on their offense??

  75. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:57 pm

That’s just about all Pierre has got…..

  76. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:58 pm

Alexi is about as bad a Vlad…..don’t throw him a strike.

  77. Pat M. August 4th, 2011 at 8:58 pm

Doc Joe…….The one thing that became very obvious last night is that AJ no longer can pitch up in the zone……

  78. blake August 4th, 2011 at 8:59 pm

Hey nice job there. Damage limited.

Bedard is a flyer for the Sox…..losing Bucholtz is big for them.

  81. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 9:01 pm

what is with that dramatic out call??

  82. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 9:02 pm

Maybe they will pick up Burnett off waivers.
Buchholz is probably done this year.

  84. blake August 4th, 2011 at 9:03 pm

Replay…..safe. the umpiring in baseball these days is atrocious.. Its the worst I’ve ever seen it.

  85. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 9:03 pm

highly dubious umpiring this inning between the strike zone to tex and granderson at first. Yankees caught a ton of breaks in the last 3 games tho so whatev

  86. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 9:03 pm

hey hey look at that Cano got a BB

  87. blake August 4th, 2011 at 9:04 pm

He wanted no part of Robinson.

  88. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 9:05 pm

    April 25th-
A.J. Burnett nearly won each of his first four starts this season and brought a 3-0 record — despite not pitching all that well — into Monday night’s game against the White Sox.

He was very good in start No. 5, but former Met Phil Humber was even better. Humber no-hit the Yankees for 61/3 innings in the White Sox’s 2-0 victory in front of 40,506 at the Stadium

  89. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:05 pm

After the laser opo field HR, if i’m pitching, he is not seeing anything close

  90. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Swisher has hit the ball hard twice

  91. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:06 pm

    Thanks for the info

  92. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 9:07 pm

    Thanks Yankee Trader.

  93. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 9:08 pm

It makes sense that Humber is the one W.Sox pitcher to hold them in check he throws soft garbage

  94. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:09 pm

    YT,

Being a former Met, any idea in what trade he went to WS, he looks like a very good pitcher

  95. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:11 pm

    lucky break

  96. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 9:11 pm

    poor Dunn :( lol

  97. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 9:12 pm

Konerko really can’t move. They are desperate to let him play tonight.

  98. blake August 4th, 2011 at 9:13 pm

    Konerko really moving slowly around…..

  99. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 9:13 pm

Ok guys let me concentrate on the game!!

    By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 18, 2011 at 1:22pm CST]

The White Sox announced that they claimed right-hander Philip Humber off of waivers from the A’s (Twitter link). The A’s claimed Humber from the Royals last month, only to designate him for assignment to create roster space for Guillermo Moscoso.

Humber posted a 4.15 ERA in 21 2/3 big league innings this year. As short as that stint was, it was the most the 28-year-old has ever pitched in the big leagues. The former first rounder was once considered a top prospect and the Mets sent him to Minnesota in the Johan Santana deal. In 664 1/3 minor league innings, he has a 4.48 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9

  100. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 9:13 pm

  101. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:14 pm

    Lol……Nah no were injured

  103. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 9:15 pm

nunez can only dream about making a play like that.

  104. blake August 4th, 2011 at 9:15 pm

    No fans were injured.

  105. kd August 4th, 2011 at 9:15 pm

  106. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:16 pm

  107. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 9:16 pm

  112. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 9:18 pm

  113. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 9:18 pm

  114. Ace August 4th, 2011 at 9:18 pm

  115. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:19 pm

    me too….Direct tv i guess

  116. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 9:19 pm

I wonder if the Yanks are exhausted from running around the bases 1 million times yesterday

  117. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 9:23 pm

They aren’t discussed much here, but the Phillies have the best record in baseball now at 71-39 and their pitching is absolutely sick! This 24 year old pitcher Worley is ridiculously good and he’s their number five guy. Their starters are 47-24.

    Halladay – 2.55 (14-4)
    Hamels – 2.62 (12-6)
    Lee – 3.14 (10-7)
    Oswalt – 3.79 (4-6)
    Worley – 2.33 (7-1)

  118. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I don’t know what kind of pitch Nova is throwing, but he is fooling them big time

  119. TheStraw August 4th, 2011 at 9:24 pm

    Nova looks good…

  120. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 9:24 pm

Nova is telling Joe not to send him back to Triple-A. Boy is he looking sharp

Man Nova’s slide piece is nasty tonight…..tough to take him out of the rotation and 24 years old and on the rise.

  124. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:25 pm

    WCYF,

They all talk about how good the Red Sox are, but i always thought that the team to beat was the Phillys

    5 IP-64 pitches-3hitsno walks-6 strikeouts.
That is why Nova belongs up in the majors!!!

  129. Bret The Hitman August 4th, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Posada should lose his job to Montero.

    Nova deserves Posada’s job.

    It’s that simple.

You can’t cash a bad check.

  130. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Anyone here the stat about no Yankee pitchers giving up a walk in 34 innings…(i believe it was). That is pretty good.

    Beautiful bunt by Jeter

  131. blake August 4th, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Spark plug Gardy……now get him over or in Derek.

  132. Bret The Hitman August 4th, 2011 at 9:27 pm

  134. Joe from Long Island August 4th, 2011 at 9:28 pm

Pat M. – I remember CB, back when the Yanks first signed AJ, predicted that AJ would have problems after a few years, as his FB lost velocity.

    Great slide by Brett.

  135. blake August 4th, 2011 at 9:28 pm

Nice work. I don’t mind that.

  136. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 9:28 pm

  141. blake August 4th, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Gardner just causes havok…..99.5 % of players have no chance to score on that. Brett Gardner run all the way.

  142. randy l. August 4th, 2011 at 9:29 pm

    blake-

i think if the yankees have the money to spend on a guy like aj burnett on a long term contract, they have the money to send him to the bullpen.

i don’t really see what the big deal is.

nova is better at this point in time.

what kind of message does it send that you get to play ,not because you deserve to, but because you are paid more ?

  143. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 9:29 pm

  146. Pat M. August 4th, 2011 at 9:31 pm

Doc Joe……The hope was that AJ would deliver 2 maybe 3 good years based upon his 2008 breakout season…….Both CB & myself fell for it as we were blinded by that arm of his

  147. luis August 4th, 2011 at 9:32 pm

    randy l. August 4th, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Sorry to cut in, but i hope FO would listen to you, but not likely

  148. blake August 4th, 2011 at 9:32 pm

    Randy,

Yea….I like AJ and he has been better this year but is he one of their 5 best starters right now? Even if its close don’t you have to go with the 24 year old over the 34 year old? They wont do it this year…..but AJ probably better come prepared to compete for his.rotation spot next spring.

  149. yankfan1 August 4th, 2011 at 9:33 pm

i just want to say one thing, it off topic but whatever, the Yankees best signing this year was easily…… Larry Rothschild.

  152. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Pierre is lucky that he can bunt otherwise he wouldn’t still be in the majors

  153. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 9:34 pm

    That was impressive.

  154. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 9:34 pm

  155. Joe from Long Island August 4th, 2011 at 9:35 pm

Pat M. – well, he delivered in 2009, they wouldn’t have won without him. Since then……

    Juan Pierre is a bat-handler extra-ordinaire.

Nice, classy touch by the White Sox, for Geno.

  156. randy l. August 4th, 2011 at 9:35 pm

“Posada should lose his job to Montero.”

    brett-

montero hasn’t had any mlb at bats yet.

i think we’d better wait to give him the dh job until he actually hits at the mlb level.

  157. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 9:35 pm

Personally, I think they should just put AJ on the DL with whatever mysterious diagnosis they can come up with, let him go to Tampa, add Montero to the 40 man, bring him up, and let Montero catch 3x/week, DH 3x/week.

Let Monstero get a little taste of the green monster.

  158. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 9:35 pm

If Andrew Miller had this kind of slider and life on his fb in July, Bedard might still be in Seattle.

94 mph sinker. When he has a slider like the one he’s had tonight to go.along with it he can be dominant…..

Great play by Martin….what a throw.

  183. DFox August 4th, 2011 at 9:41 pm

It’s really hard to defend leaving Burnett in the rotation instead of Nova since Burnett would have to pitch way above what he’s done his whole career to be better than Nova at this point. I’m not saying Nova’s going to win the Cy Young award, but at this point Burnett has almost no potential to pitch as well as him. Very sad situation.

  184. Joe from Long Island August 4th, 2011 at 9:42 pm

get some insurance here against humber. go into boston on a roll.

hope francona torches his bullpen tonight.

  185. Ace August 4th, 2011 at 9:43 pm

  186. Bret The Hitman August 4th, 2011 at 9:43 pm

  200. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 9:52 pm

Tonight is a perfect example of how valuable Martin is to this team. He’s a superb defensive catcher. With our lineup, you don’t need him to be Mike Piazza.

  201. blake August 4th, 2011 at 9:52 pm

Yea Humber did pitch well…..that’s twice he’s pitched we’ll against the Yanks.

  209. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 9:54 pm

  210. WyoYankee August 4th, 2011 at 9:54 pm

You have to deal in REALITY. AJ is not going to the Pen, sheesh Get a clue. They can’t trade AJ, they won’t trade AJ, they won’t go to a 6 man rotation any longer. Reality dumb, dumb, DUMMIES-FIGURE IT OUT, Nova goes to SWB or the Pen. How hard is this.

  217. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Nova has a great pitch count too….

  218. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 9:59 pm

  219. MG August 4th, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Nova has really improved this season, he’s ready to be a regular in the rotation for the Yankees.

It’s a tough problem to have after the Darrell Rasner and Sidney Ponson years, particularly when the B’s and the SWB rotation waits for an opportunity.

  220. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:01 pm

This is the type of year that is fun.

We sign colon, garcia, martin, chavez, jones for very little money.

We kept all or most of our prospects.

Montero, sanchez are monsters at a scarce position & we have a gazillion pitching prospects,in addition to a few nice if/of prospects.

    Cash is doing it right.

Oh yeah & we might be tied for 1st place tomorrow morning.

  226. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:02 pm

  238. MG August 4th, 2011 at 10:05 pm

blake, I’d like to see the Yankees hold on to the prospects and assimilate one per year into the rotation-you could have CC and the 4 Homies as the rotation by 2013…

Nova is really impressive with that change, he didn’t have that earlier this year.

  239. JM August 4th, 2011 at 10:05 pm

At the beginning of the year, who would have thought the Yankees would have an excess of good starting pitching….Certainly not me. But it sure is a nice problem to have.

  240. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:06 pm

  241. WyoYankee August 4th, 2011 at 10:06 pm

Luis, Yes AJ has sucked and it sure does appear that he is 6th best SP. But some people here are arguing to send aj to Pen and that ain’t happening–now. If aj continues through 9-10, or 9-15,, or if Hughes stumbes again. Nova might be the guy….BUT NOT NOW.

  246. pkyankfan69 August 4th, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Why not DL Burnett with some phantom injury???
Seems like AJ could use a mental brake and then Nova can stay in the rotation.
Nova is pitching too well right now to be messed with.

  247. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:07 pm

    MG,

lots of options coming along next year….that’s why I think AJ better bring it next March if he wants a slot.

  248. Chris W August 4th, 2011 at 10:07 pm

I have never seen Nova look this good, even in the Cincinnati game. His fastball is crackling and he’s got the best changeup I’ve ever seen him throw.

  249. RS August 4th, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Nova is developing in a way that we haven’t seen from a Yankee pitching prospect in a long time. His slider came out of nowhere to become a strikeout pitch, and he still has the curveball and great sinker. I also love his attitude and poise. This kid is about to go 10-4 with a 3.85 ERA and he’s only 24 years old! Hopefully he can become a good #3/#4 in the rotation for years to come.

  250. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 10:08 pm

How can they send Nova to the minors after his performance tonight? The Yanks should send AJ on a cruise or vacation for a month. It’s really annoying how in love Cashman and Girardi are with AJ the nut.

  251. luis August 4th, 2011 at 10:08 pm

    WyoYankee August 4th, 2011 at 10:06 pm

  252. Tank August 4th, 2011 at 10:08 pm

Nasty! No way they can remove this guy from the rotation.

They want to develop pitching, one is developing and maturing before our eyes, and is producing start in and start out unlike most of our past prospects, and we send him to the minors?

  253. Bret The Hitman August 4th, 2011 at 10:09 pm

When Hughes and Nova pitch this way (and Noesi as well), it makes me want to hug the other pitching prospects harder, namely Betances, Banuelos and Warren. It just makes you feel good when homegrown pitchers look more like they’re panning out rather than regressing or treading water. I’d really want far more in trades for these pitchers, even though they are prospects. Perhaps when we look back on Colorado’s demands, they will appear outright hostile. I would love to see Joba come back as a starter. And what more can you say about Robertson? Look what Ian Kennedy is doing. Jeff Karstens. NL teams should be drooling over our pitching prospects. They need to ask for less and offer more or take a giant step back.

  254. J. Alfred Prufrock August 4th, 2011 at 10:09 pm

There’s no way Nova’s getting sent down.

  255. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:09 pm

That slider is a recent development and could greatly affect his upside if he can become more consistent with it start to start……

  256. Chris W August 4th, 2011 at 10:09 pm

“The dirty little secret about Martin is that he’s not superb defensively.”

I don’t put any stock in catching defensive statistics. He’s up there with the league leaders in CS percentage, and it is NOT because his staff is good at holding runners. Martin has been superb.

  257. MG August 4th, 2011 at 10:09 pm

I’m pretty sure Nova has given Girardi and Rothschild a sleepless night tonight after the way he’s pitched the last two games.

It’s really a tough problem-if they pull Burnett out of the rotation they are writing off the remainder of his contract, there is nothing they can do with him other than Ken Holtzman him (Billy Martin put Holtzman in the bullpen and didn’t use him other than blowouts for at least half a season back in the 70′s)

  258. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:10 pm

You are so wrong and don’t bother me with stats.

  261. Eroc August 4th, 2011 at 10:10 pm

If that slider is here to stay, there is no limit to how good Nova can be. Him with a legit strikeout pitch is drool worthy.

And we’ve already seen his ability to grind out starts without his best stuff. They cannot send this guy to the minors.

  262. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:10 pm

  265. G. Love August 4th, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Oh and you cannot send this man down. He’s one of the 4 best starters on this team.

  266. luis August 4th, 2011 at 10:12 pm

    Brett,

Are you becoming a prospect hugger??!!. Welcome to the club

  267. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:13 pm

There was probably always going to come a time when AJ wouldn’t be one of the best 5 starters anymore if the young guys they had developed as they thought they could…..it’s just that nobody was counting on Nova being one of those guys….

  268. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 10:13 pm

Kay’s question for Flash is obviously whether you skip Burnett one start and pitch Nova, or if you can actually justify sending Nova down. No way Nova should be sent to the pen….

  269. luis August 4th, 2011 at 10:14 pm

    G Love,

You too??, ther must be something wrong with the water you are drinking!!!LOL

  270. AZ88 August 4th, 2011 at 10:14 pm

They pulled Mussina, a far more accomplished pitcher, and stuck him in the pen for a brief period of time. They can do the same to Burnett.

They want to develop starters, don’t they? Yanking one out of the rotation during his best stretch of the season is not the best way to go about it. Though it would be typical of this regime.

He is easily, not only one of our 5 best pitchers, but probably one of the top 3-4. He is actually improving as the season goes on, not going backwards or getting injured or underperforming like all of our past hyped pitching prospects.

  271. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:14 pm

    blake,

Nova turned a corner earlier this season. You could see that he was starting to really figure it out from start to start. His K numbers are not surprising me. He’s learned how to baffle batters with his stuff.

  274. NYY fan in NH August 4th, 2011 at 10:15 pm

Do you go with Soriano here and save Robertson for Boston??

  275. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 10:15 pm

The Yankees should stay with a 5 man rotation for now, with an off day Monday, insert Nova in the rotation and put AJ on DL with whatever reason you can come up with. No need to DFA him and eat > 33 M

  276. MG August 4th, 2011 at 10:16 pm

this would be the time for the Yankees to get Burnett through waivers and find a home for him in the NL-they could probably eat $20M of his contract and get it done.

It opens the door for Nova in the rotation and they can resign either Garcia or Colon (Garcia is more likely since he’s 4 years younger) for 2012 and keep him in the rotation until all the kids are ready or someone hands the Yankees a true Ace in exchange for prospects.

  277. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:16 pm

Obviously Nova can’t be sent down and AJ isn’t going anywhere. Much as I think AJ is mediocre, he hasn’t been bad enough to remove from the rotation anyway…..

Anyway, I don’t think the decision is that hard – Phil has to be sent down. I get what he did last night, but it was still just one game and oddly, while everyone is giddy about his velocity, he still had far fewer K’s (which seems to be of prime importance to many) than Nova. I just don’t want to see Phil sent to the pen – that would be a waste.

  278. Tar August 4th, 2011 at 10:16 pm

    “Not he’s not.”

Explain yourself. What is your problem with Martin behind the plate?

  279. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:16 pm

There will be some interesting questions after this game…..they won’t pull AJ from his spot so I’m not sure what they are going to do…..just don’t see how they can justify sending Nova down…..and they have to follow up on Hughes’s last outing and he needs to pitch to continue building his arm.

  280. DFox August 4th, 2011 at 10:16 pm

“They pulled Mussina, a far more accomplished pitcher, and stuck him in the pen for a brief period of time. They can do the same to Burnett.”

  281. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 10:16 pm

martin is a superb defensive catcher and receiver. to say otherwise is poppyc0ck.

that being said, he doesn’t hit and occasionally shows pop, although as someone else pointed out with this lineup they don’t need him to hit. personally I think he’d make a solid backup or part time starter with Montero IF Montero shows the ability to a) catch at the major league level and be at least as adequate (defensively) as Piazza – assuming his bat is what it’s hyped to be and b) can stay healthy enough to catch in his career.

  282. Joe from Long Island August 4th, 2011 at 10:17 pm

My 2 cents – It’s clear that AJ is the odd man out. He should be the one to be skipped. How long that lasts is dependent on how the rest of the starters do, and injuries. Rationally, AJ knows he’s not pulling his weight; there’s no way he can not know. This is as key an issue for the team as handling Posada in his decline.

Hey, it’s why Joe and Cash get paid the big bucks.

  287. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:18 pm

I don’t see any way they would ever put AJ on waivers. First, I really think they like him – Cashman get his back up on WFAN at the suggestion that AJ should be removed from the rotation. Second, I can’t imagine Colon or Garcia (MAYBE one of them) will be back next year and, if they are, how good are they going to be? AJ can be a fine back end starter, but someone has to fill out the rotation behind CC.

  293. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 10:20 pm

Cashman was on wfan today and Joe and Evan asked him if he is upset with how AJ has pitched and he said no. So they said you gave the guy $80m didn’t you except him to be better than what he has been here and be similair to Toronto or better? Cashman said no I got what I paid for I knew he was .500 pitcher and that is what we got. Then he said he is pitching on Wednesday there is no question about that. Then he went on and on how he might not pitch well but he really cares. For some odd reason Cash loves him. Such bs.

  294. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:20 pm

Explain yourself. What is your problem with Martin behind the plate?

    ——

I’m waiting for WCYF to tell us what Martin does better than most catchers.

As Mell has pointed out a few times his defense is overrated.

If Martin is going to hit this little he has to be one of the best defensive catchers in MLB, when in reality he’s above averagish.

  295. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:20 pm

Joe, if you read Girardi’s comments last night, you know he doesn’t think AJ should be the one left out. He specifically pointed out that Hughes has not had a good year and has only had one good start (something Cashman basically said today on WFAN)………..so clearly he was implying that the comments about AJ are unfair.

  296. luis August 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

    Bret,

I’m just teasing you guys, i know you always liked Nova

  297. MG August 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Betsy, they’ve already had AJ on waivers this week along with the rest of the team, it’s standard procedure after the trade deadline. I doubt anyone claimed him or any of the others.

Hughes isn’t being sent down, that makes no sense at this point in time. It’s a tough decision for the Yankees, they’ll figure it out…

  298. Joe from Long Island August 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Nova for 8th, then the Greatest of All Time for the 9th.

  299. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Yeah, that’s fake waivers – the point is they aren’t going to let AJ go. I’m not quite sure why everyone is so confident all of a sudden in Hughes off of one game.

  300. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Yankee fans are scarred by Posada.

They don’t remember what great defense looks like behind the dish.

  301. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

“Second, I can’t imagine Colon or Garcia (MAYBE one of them) will be back next year and, if they are, how good are they going to be?”

Garcia is only 34 and has done this 2 straight years now….it’s not like he’s going to lose his fastballl……it’s already gone. I see no reason why he couldn’t junkerball his way to a bunch of quality starts again next year.

CC, Hughes, Garcia, Nova, Noesi/Betances/Warren. AJ had better come to play next spring if he wants a rotation spot.

  302. WyoYankee August 4th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

    J Alfred,
90% chance he goes down. Keep him in a rotation. Its the only move really. The pen is a temptation but Girardi and Cash know with Garcia, Bart, aj and Phil they may need him and they would need him sharp and strectched out. So hes going down and if you don’t understand that then, oh well?:”:
    Luis,
agree next year or if needed in Sept Nova is going to be at least a #3 IMO.

  303. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:22 pm

If someone claimed AJ then the Yankees would gladly let him go IMO….to whoever wanted him.

  304. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:22 pm

MG, sending Phil down makes a lot more sense than sending Nova down……….

  305. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:22 pm

  306. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 10:22 pm

if Ian Kennedy of all people can be a 13 game winner in the NL at the start of August, surely someone in the NL could use a pitcher like Burnett.

  308. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 10:23 pm

    MG and Betsy-

AJ was placed on waivers August 1st. That was leaked the other day along with Soriano and Posada. All players get passed thru waivers in August. Once a claim is made the team has 24 hours to pull them back, work a trade, or just dump them and their salary on the claiming team.

  311. Yank 97 August 4th, 2011 at 10:23 pm

The Yanks can’t give preferential treatment to prospects who were hyped (like Hughes and others) and have a different standard for guys who flew under the radar. They have to give guys who are producing equal shots. You can’t predict how prospects will develop – hyped guys might flame out while under the radar guys might outperform their ceilings.

Who thought that Cano would become a superstar? Who thought Pedroia would be an MVP canidate? Who thought Lester would be one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball when he was offered for Santana?

Nova might be one of those guys who outperforms his BaseballAmerica projections. If that slider is for real, he is going to soar up the boards.

  312. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 10:24 pm

You, are way down the pecking order of someone whose opinion matters.

  315. Bronx Jeers August 4th, 2011 at 10:24 pm

AJ could go on waivers till the cows come home.

Waivers with sprinkles and a cherry on top and no one’s touching it. You get the feeling other GM’s see his name on the list, laugh, and think to themselves “yeah, right”

  316. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Martin is throwing out 27% of runners, league average is 28%. He has given up the third most stolen bases in the league as a catcher. Matt Weiters and Lou Marson are superb defensive catchers, Russel Martin is probably above average when you consider blocking/framing. He also has the second most errors.

He has to hit somewhere between where he is at and what he was in the first month to warrant catching 120 games. Right now I’d try to find a better offensive catcher (cough cough montero) and catch them about 50/50. If its Montero I’d do 60/40 martin/montero.

  317. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Blake, I love Garcia; even if he’s not this good again, he’s a perfect 5th guy. I don’t think one start should change things with Phil. Unless he really turns it on, let him have to compete for a spot. I think Nova has already earned one. I’m not thrilled at that potential rotation by the way

  318. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Betsy, Phil showed significantly better stuff on Tuesday than he’s shown all season, including a vicious breaking ball. His arm is still gaining strength, I think he’ll be better and better as the season goes on from here.

It’s a great problem to have, isn’t it?

  331. Joe from Long Island August 4th, 2011 at 10:27 pm

Betsy – you’re not incorrect in anything you said there. It’s a problem, albeit a good one. I’m just offering my two cents about what to do.

I would not be surprised if they did something else. What that is I don’t know. I just can’t see sending Nova back to Scranton. Phil to the pen doesn’t make sense to me, either. Logically, then, AJ is the odd man out.

10 Ks, and he’s pitching a complete game. No way do you remove this man from the rotation.

    We’ll see what shakes down.

  332. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:27 pm

  333. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:27 pm

YT, yeah, I get how waivers work, but in any case – AJ is going to be here for the next few years. He’s a very average pitcher, but he is durable – he never misses a start. Even if you somehow miraculously got rid of him, where does that leave the staff? CC and who?

  334. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 10:27 pm

I hope Nova does realize though that even if he goes back to Scranton, this man has a place in the 2012 yankees rotation…

I can remember the last time they had a catcher this good, it was Jose Molina. They are basically the same guy.

And the yankees loved Jose Molina and what he brought to the staff and to the club house just as much as Martin, and that didnt stop them from ditching him for Cervelli or catching Posada over him.

  338. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 10:28 pm

how the heck can you take Nova out of the rotation pitching like this? and seriously – I don’t really have it in for Burnett like some others do, I’ve always believed in him and still think he has something to offer but no way should either Nova or Hughes (as long as he’s not out there pitching like he’s got a dead arm and serving up 2 strike hits galore) have their development stunted.

  339. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 10:28 pm

That is a quick hook for Nova. Girardi always leaves AJ out there to dry and get hammered. Nova should of got 1 more batter and maybe Robertson could be saved for the dump tomorrow.

  340. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:28 pm

MG, not criticizing Phil, but we’re talking about he and Nova and you just can’t send Nova down. I think he’s got better stuff and is a better pitcher than Phil for one – and for another, he’s pretty much been rock solid for awhile now. He’s also starting to strike people out………

  341. BD (Boston Dave) August 4th, 2011 at 10:29 pm

  342. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:29 pm

YT, yeah, I get how waivers work, but in any case – AJ is going to be here for the next few years. He’s a very average pitcher, but he is durable – he never misses a start. Even if you somehow miraculously got rid of him, where does that leave the staff? CC and who?

    ___

I hate this argument, the idea that he never misses a start. When the majority of those starts are not quality, who cares that he shows up every 5 days…

    —————-
yeah when you have depth and better options – which until recently was never the case with this organization

  345. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

AC, because who do you want to replace him with?

  346. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

It looks like Robertson is too strong

  347. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

or keep the pitching depth and sign Kemp for just money :)

  348. Tom in N.J. August 4th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Hughes is getting another start, right?

  349. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

I don’t care that Martin can’t hit – I’ve been a proponent of his for a long time. I love what he brings to this team defensively and that to me is of prime importance. If this team has to depend on their 9th place hitter, then something is wrong. I love Martin.

  350. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

I hate the 6 man rotation – I prefer everyone, not just CC, to stay on regular rest.

  351. Chris W August 4th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

Martin is a better hitter than Jose Molina. His average is low, yes, but he has some power and draws a lot of walks. He also runs well.

I think he’s got one more hot streak in him. No reason the Yankees have to stick with him next year.

  352. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

AC, because who do you want to replace him with?

    __

Betsy where have you been this week really? I want to replace him with the other 5 starters in the rotation. And then Warren and then Noesi…..

There are 7 options on this team right now i think are better than what we get from Burnett now.

  353. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

    Betsy,

If that is how the Yankees are going to model their catching situation they need to find a way to get one of the top defensive catchers in the game.

  354. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

They aren’t going with 6 starters but Colon has to be skipped a couple of times down the stretch. You can guarantee he will have an injury to his arm if they don’t. He hasn’t thrown more than 100 innings in 6 years.

  355. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

“Hughes is getting another start, right?”

has to….he needs to pitch to build arm strength and there is just too much difference maker potential for the playoffs to not follow up with him. Hughes and Nova both were impressive in this series.

  356. Joe from Long Island August 4th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

Neither Banuelos nor Betances will be ready for a season-long gig in the rotation next year. There will be spots available.

  357. Benny Blanco August 4th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

if they send nova down, Mlb should investigate the yankees. :)

  358. Nilsson August 4th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

As soon as the ball left Pierre’s bat, I knew it would be caught.

  359. luis August 4th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

    Tom,

yes, he is pitching on tuesday if i recall correctly

  360. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

Joe/LI, I just think you have to send down Phil. AJ going anywhere is not an option – so that’s moot. Even if it were an option, I’m still in wait and see mood on Phil. I’m not going to apologize for taking this attitude because it’s just one start – I’m sure most will think I have it out for him, but that’s their issue. Anyway, since AJ is not going anywhere and Nova has been so great, the one pitcher who still has a ton to prove has to be sent down (no pen).

  361. JobaTipsHisCap August 4th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Cle is really playing tough on sux.
Hopefully yanks can keep up with.

  362. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Well AC, that’s up to you that you want to depend on a few kid starters, two of whom have never even started in the majors and one of whom has a lot to prove.

  363. Bret The Hitman August 4th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

    AJ for Alfonso Soriano. DH/RF/LF/PH

They’d get more use out of him than AJ, starting NOW.

  364. m August 4th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

So, wait. Now, Phil’s the one going down to AAA?

  365. BD (Boston Dave) August 4th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

just to play devil’s advocate –

the White sox offense has been pretty bad (especially without Konerko – or a crippled Konerko)

I’d like to see both Phil and Ivan keep it going. I think they can…. but shutting down the White Sox hitters isn’t exactly a rarity these days.

  366. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

The Yankees announced that Phil is starting before Nova even took the hill tonight.

It’s pretty obvious that the Yanks plan on staying with him in the rotation.

  367. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

LGY, I don’t see anything wrong with Martin behind the plate. I get that you are not a fan of his and I am so I don’t think we will agree on this issu.

  368. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

Kay is right the bench is short. They have to add a 21 year old C/DH for tomorrow’s game.

  369. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

send colon down to the DR to get some more stem cells -so he’ll be good to go for the playoffs. rotation surplus problem solved.

  370. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

If they get Betances to 150 innings this year then he probably could go as the 5th starter….though I’d really prefer them to build both he and Manny so that they could enter the rotation with no limits. I doubt that they’d put them both in at the same time though so I’d expect to see Betances sometime next year barring no set backs and hopefully Manny in 2013. Also….Noesi is really good as well and deserves a chance to fight for a spot in the rotation unless he’s moved or something in the offseason.

  371. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

Martin is a better hitter than Jose Molina. His average is low, yes, but he has some power and draws a lot of walks. He also runs well.

He has hit .203 .310 .304 .614 since May 1st. Thats Jose Molina. I’d look into trading for Lou marson if they really wanted an elite defensive catcher.

  375. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:38 pm

M, we’re just talking – they aren’t going to keep up a 6 man rotation forever. As AJ is not going anywhere, it’s going to be between the 2 kids. Frankly, I don’t think Phil would be sent down. If they choose Nova, I think the Yankees would put Phil in the pen (mistake).

  376. Yank 97 August 4th, 2011 at 10:38 pm

    ___

I judge on results. What exactly have you seen from AJ to justify your opinion?
Hasnt won since June, and this is the same BS with him year after year. April is good, and by mid may he sucks.

Nova has 10 wins and looks much better than AJ
Hughes seemed to be starting to get himself back.
Noesi has been here in the pen dominating…
Warren is unproven ill give you that, but that means nothing when it is unproven vs. proven to be not good.

And they clobbered Burnett last night. Quentin and Ramirez can also hit. 10 strikeouts and no walks is impressive regardless of the competition. These are major league hitters, even if they aren’t good ones.

  382. Bret The Hitman August 4th, 2011 at 10:39 pm

    Blake,

The innings count matters but not enough to stop the Yankees from promoting Manny to AAA before Betances…and Manny has a shot to see ML action in the pen. It just seems like Manny, being a lefty, is much closer to joining the rotation. Plus he has more polish.

  383. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 10:39 pm

    Nunez swing the bat

  384. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:39 pm

Had Hughes came out with the same flat stuff, poor command, and floaty curveball then yea he’d be going down and he should have….he didn’t though….he looked like the Hughes of old but only with a better curveball….they aren’t sending him down

  385. BD (Boston Dave) August 4th, 2011 at 10:39 pm

    Frozen Rope,

    no doubt.

  389. luis August 4th, 2011 at 10:40 pm

    Betsy,

HI, how are you?. Listen the potential upside of having first half Hughes is too important, so i guess he is not going anywhere. The ideal move would be to skip AJ, because of the way Nova has consistently improved through the season. Are they going to skip AJ ??, i really don’t know. The FO has a good probem on their hands. I also understand your skepticism toward Phil, that’s why you have to give him another start to see if he is gaining consitency.

    2010 first half Hughes

  394. m August 4th, 2011 at 10:41 pm

I think they’re going to ride it for as long as they can. Give CC his regular rest. Give somebody else a break. Make it work until the double-header.

Worry about any potential postseason rotation/bullpen in September.

  395. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

    bret,

I think Manny being promoted first has more to do with that fact that he’s left handed and they think he might can help out of the pen this year. He’s 3 years younger than Betances and really hasn’t pitched anywhere close to a big league season of innings yet. You might be right but I really hope they give him a full year at AAA next year (or most of it) just so he can finish the product. He’s close now….but I’d love to see him finish the development process….get 175-180 innings in and then join the rotation in 2013 ready to throw 190-200 innings with no limits….still at age 22.

  396. BTX August 4th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

Sure, let them send Nova down. Just don’t want to hear them whining anymore about not developing pitchers or wondering why they need to acquire one every winter and every trade deadline.

24 yr old starter who has outperformed his expectations (a rarity among Yankees prospects) and has been improving and developing before our eyes and they ship him to the minors during a playoff race?

Yeah, that Russell Martin really stinks doesn’t he.

Baseball doesn’t work that way, 1 PA doesn’t trump an entire season. Of course I am all for martin hitting more like he did in April, since at the time I thought the Yankees had a starter for the next few years.

  418. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

    AC:

Noesi hasn’t started a game – I’ll wait and see how he does as a starter before judging him to be the goods.

    Nova is a lock.

Yeah, I need to see a lot more from Phil than one game……that’s how I feel. I don’t think he’s a given by any means.

Blake, if it’s between the two, it has to be Phil – it can’t be Nova. For all the people who are so insistent that strikeouts are so important, Nova had ten tonight – twice as many as Phil.

  419. Chris W August 4th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

“Didn’t CC give up a ton of hits to this same team? Unless I’m thinking of another series.”

  420. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

which ones? I don’t know how the Yanks like to handle that with pitchers. I think (not sure) that Nova played winter ball last year

  421. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

now as long as this team doesn’t fold up against boston like they’ve done so far, we’ll be golden. just like 2009, only thing holding this team back is the head to head vs Boston. just don’t get swept, and put some wins on the board against them the rest of the way, regardless of who wins the division – anything can happen this year.

  422. Bret The Hitman August 4th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

There’s still some all-star magic in Martin’s bat. Still 27. He just needs more rest. A 50/50 split with the any combo of Cervelli/Montero/Romine might do him a world of good next year.

  423. randy l. August 4th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

i hate it when the yankees have too many damn good starters.

Phil’s still getting his stuff together, though. Nova’s had good stuff all year, but the strikeouts didn’t come until later. Give Phil a chance to find a rhythm if he indeed has his good fastball back, and you’ll see the Ks.

  427. BTX August 4th, 2011 at 10:46 pm

“Right. Send down an All-Star 18-8 25 year old pitcher who had inflammation in his shoulder and is now back throwing 92-95 MPH and pitching like a number one. ”

  428. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 10:46 pm

He just needs more rest. A 50/50 split with the any combo of Cervelli/Montero/Romine might do him a world of good next year.

Yup, they need to get a backup that they feel comfortable with catching more than they allowed gustavo and cervelli to catch this year. They really ran Martin into the ground.

  429. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:46 pm

The Yankees should try to find a long term solution in RF this winter with all the feel good vibes surrounding their young pitchers.

  430. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 10:47 pm

I don’t buy Martin as a full time long term solution at catcher (health, propensity for dry spells at the plate) but paired with Montero (if he can catch and comes close to the hype), I really like that tandem.

  431. Laura - I Bleed Blue August 4th, 2011 at 10:47 pm

In all fairness, I think I could have hit that pitch Bruney threw out of the ballpark. That was one fat cookie over the plate. Martin put a hurtin’ on it, but I think 99% of the hitters in the majors would have as well.

  432. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:47 pm

Hi Luis, AJ is not going anywhere – even if I thought he should, he’s not, so practically speaking, we have to deal with the situation as it is. I never said that Phil shouldn’t get another start, but someone is going to be taken out of the rotation……….I’m not ever expecting 1st half Phil again because I don’t think that’s not indicative of his real ability. I think he can eventually be a solid pitcher, but I’m not sure when we’ll see that. This isn’t about Phil, it’s really about Nova who has been so great and so consistent.

  433. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 10:47 pm

I doubt they will do it because he might put his head through the wall – but they could skip AJ one turn.

That’s patently false. He blew a 95 mph heater up past Quentin in the first. I think he hit 95 in the third, too.

No, his velocity is not as consistent as we might like yet, but how can you give up on him if he is clearly making progress? For a headcase like Burnett? That’s madness.

  438. randy l. August 4th, 2011 at 10:49 pm

“Nova’s had good stuff all year, but the strikeouts didn’t come until later.”

But that’s why it is so exciting – he is developing before our eyes. And it’s not based on luck. He has actually developed a swing and miss pitch that he was sorely missing before.

If this is the Nova that pitches moving forward, I’m not to sure Hughes still wins the ‘upside’ argument. Even if he does, it will be like 1 and 1A

  443. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 10:49 pm

    Randy,

What do you think about a 55/45 50/50 60/40 catcher split with Martin/Montero? You think that could help like your suggested with Jeter playing 120-130 games?

  444. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

How can Nova come back into the game-oops that’s his clone Noesi.

  445. stuart a August 4th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

aj burnett staying in the rotation is unfair and wrong.

michael kay might get paid by aj the yanks 2nd starter…

aj is a joke. nova is legit….

  446. m August 4th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

Okay, that’s all good. But people will be very upset if Nova goes to the minors.

  447. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

Nova should hide so Girardi can’t find him to tell him the bad news

  448. Chris W August 4th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

“If this is the Nova that pitches moving forward, I’m not to sure Hughes still wins the ‘upside’ argument. Even if he does, it will be like 1 and 1A”

    And won’t that be fantastic?

Didn’t the Yankees actually lose Nova to the Padres in the Rule 5 draft?

  449. Laura - I Bleed Blue August 4th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

“Have the Red Sox ran away with the AL East yet?”

Yes, in the FRINGE alternate universe. :P

  450. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

If I’m trading for a RFer then I want Upton because his contract is nice….I’d rather give up good prospects for a few controlled years of him than a rental of Kemp…..however I think I’d rather just wait and sign Kemp for money only the most.

  451. Tar August 4th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

    Blake

Dellin and Manny. I know Dellin will finish close to 125- 130 innings. Do they send him to winter ball for a few more starts?

I guess I am just not sure if they use winter ball to increase a prospects innings.

  452. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

He hit 95 three times in the first inning.

  453. AZ88 August 4th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

    Chris -

How is AJ in this conversation? We all know he isin’t going anywhere, regardless of how much we want it to happen. It is between Hughes and Nova.

  454. ctyankeefan. August 4th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

BTX- Not sure if you saw the game, but I am very certain he was hitting 95 at the least in the first inning. I think he may have hot 95 in the first few innings. Building up arm strength.

  455. Bronx Jeers August 4th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

I doubt they will do it because he might put his head through the wall – but they could skip AJ one turn.

    ————————————————————————————————————————————

If the head through the wall thing was guaranteed I think they would definitely skip him.

  456. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

The Yankees should try to find a long term solution in RF this winter with all the feel good vibes surrounding their young pitchers.

    ———–

seriously? what’s wrong with swisher, power, good OBP, plays a solid OF. more yankee fan diva BS and the entitlement of an all star at every position. what goes on when people here aren’t railing on Martin, Swisher, and Gardner (because he lacks power for a corner OF). Ridiculous.

  457. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

BTX, to be fair, this is sort of like Phil’s ST…………the diminishing velocity is a concern I suppose, but he had this issue last year – he’s not going to be a guy that maintains it all the way through a game. That’s not a big deal as long as we aren’t talking some huge drop and he has other pitches to resport to.

  458. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

hope the Yanks sweep Boston or at least take 2 out of 3. Would be nice to see Colon and Garcia do well against the RedSox.

  459. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

Noesi is good too…..he’s being wasted really most of the time.

  460. Laura - I Bleed Blue August 4th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

“M, I prefer that everyone be on regular rest – I don’t like giving everyone an extra day. In theory it sounds nice, but these guys are used to a certain routine and I don’t think it’s necessary to disturb that.”

CC is 100% against a 6 man rotation. That’s all you need to know to figure out what the Yankees will do about their current pitching problem.

  461. Chris W August 4th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

“How is AJ in this conversation? We all know he isin’t going anywhere, regardless of how much we want it to happen. It is between Hughes and Nova.”

Then it’s a six-man rotation, with Garcia and Colon getting starts off. They probably will need that, Colon especially due to the innings jump.

Taking Nova or Hughes out when they are both turning a corner (or might be, in Phil’s case) is plain stupid.

  462. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

M, Nova should not be sent to the minors…..I don’t think anyone said he should be

  463. Chris W August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

    Ah well. Dunn’s earned it.

  464. Captain Clutch August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

I guess Dunn could hit a homerun if the ball is right down the middle

  465. Laura - I Bleed Blue August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

I had a feeling that Dunn would run into one at some point.

  466. ac1 August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

    oh no…..
Noesi did NOT just give Dunn a reason to not retire did he?

  467. Jason Voorhees August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

About time for Dunn to put one out.

  468. Frozen Rope August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

a blind squirrel just found a nut as Adam Dunn homers.

  469. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

what what…Dunn hit a HR!!! o_o (He got a hit let alone a HR…lol) Well good for him

  470. Jerkface August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

seriously? what’s wrong with swisher, power, good OBP, plays a solid OF. more yankee fan diva BS and the entitlement of an all star at every position. what goes on when people here aren’t railing on Martin, Swisher, and Gardner (because he lacks power for a corner OF). Ridiculous.

They are picking up Swisher’s option, and they probably keep him, but a swisher on a 1 year deal is probably a tasty trade option for some teams.

  471. Betsy August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Laura, I really don’t think this 6 man thing will last much longer………….

  472. Yankee Trader August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

That is the only pitch location wise that Dunn can still hit.

  473. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

    Tar,

I read they are shooting for 150 innings for Betances this year….not sure if he’ll get them all during the season or what. Good question.

Well bless Dunn’s heart…..it’s 8-2 so good for him

  474. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

    ——

    Relax buddy.

Swisher is a free agent after next year and there is very little chance they sign him long term.

I’m a Swisher fan but next year at best is his last rodeo as a Yankee.

  475. RMS August 4th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Out of the 6 starters, AJ is the worst. You can’t trade/release him. Maybe he will hit a wall and you can dl him.
Last year it was Posada’s fault and Eilaland’s fault. Who gets the blame now?

  476. ctyankeefan. August 4th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

“Might mean nothing to this game, might mean everything to the season for this guy”. Youre right Kay, after this HR off Noesi Dunn will completely turn his season around lol

  477. Chris W August 4th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Well done boys! A Four Game Sweep! Onto Boston!

  478. blake August 4th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

7-2 excuse me. Great win! 1st place baby.

  479. jacksquat August 4th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

iirc Phil hit 95 in the first inning and then 94 on numerous occasions the rest of the game.

  480. Tank August 4th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

First half Hughes is more like first 6 starts Hughes.

I normally don’t like to look into splits like that because they can be deceiving, but there is a DRASTIC drop off after 5/17. Then again, I’m not sure that was sustainable. He had a line of 39 IP, 21 H, 8 BB, 40 K, 1 HR or something crazy like that.

I’m not even saying Hughes should lose his spot, but neither should Nova. They need to grow some stones and send AJ to the pen. As someone else said, if a 250 game winner like Moose could do it, so can a .500 pitcher like Burnett.

    ———

he is. he’s much better than Ayala – ERA not withstanding that guy always flirts with disaster and is going to cost the Yankees at some point.

  482. luis August 4th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Game over guys, i’m actually happy that dunn wasn’t the last out…could you imagine the boooos, poor guy

  483. RadioKev August 4th, 2011 at 10:55 pm

Put Nova in the pen and keep his arm around. There’s really no down side to having this type of depth.

  484. igotid88 August 4th, 2011 at 10:55 pm

I hope there’s a way to keep Nova up. But I don’t think Hughes should be sent down or sent to the bullpen either. He was coming off another spring training and pitched a quality game 4 of the 5 starts. I also don’t get why Hughes is the only one who has to earn his spot. But AJ gets a pass. I think if Garcia has a bad game on Sunday. Garcia will move to the pen.

  485. Ghostwriter August 4th, 2011 at 10:55 pm

This week’s performances by Nova and Hughes demonstrates that Cash did the right thing by not trading for Jiminez.

  486. syd_cash August 4th, 2011 at 10:55 pm

wow Martin looks much more attractive without the mustache

  487. m August 4th, 2011 at 10:56 pm

Comparing K’s? I wasn’t aware that Phil nearly went 8 innings. You could go on and on comparing their performances. One gave up earned run(s) the other one didn’t. The point of the matter is Phil is important to the Yankees. He’s making $3M. As long as he can pitch he will pitch in the majors.

  488. RadioKev August 4th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Hughes’ development > Nova’s development at this point in their careers. Hughes has a full season under his belt, has shown improvement with more work as he’s gone along this season, and will be hitting his prime years soon. You can’t give up on that right now, it’s a critical point in his career.

  489. randy l. August 4th, 2011 at 11:01 pm

“What do you think about a 55/45 50/50 60/40 catcher split with Martin/Montero?”

    jerkface-

i’ve always believed that a team should ideally have two good catchers who spilt the playing time fairly equally. when there is a good hitting catcher like mauer or posada imagine how good they’d be if they offensively didn’t get beat up over the years.

let the really good part of a catching tandem dh a lot. have the guy who doesn’t hit as well be really strong defensively with a gun for an arm to shut down running teams or go in in a key running situation.

the catching position needs to be redefined because catchers get beat up so much. a team also benefits from having two really good guys splitting the job because when one inevitably gets hurt, the other can catch most of the games for the duration of the injury .

i’d like to see the yankees bring up montero and divide the job 60/40 with martin. once it’s proven that montero can catch ad hit at the mlb level , 50/50.

and, yeah i’d like to see jeter start 120-130 games a year for the rest of his career.

  490. randy l. August 4th, 2011 at 11:04 pm

also i’d like one of the catchers to be a left handed hitting catcher ideally though that’s not essential.

but lefty hitting catchers are very nice to have in yankee stadium.

if montero works out, i’d like to see a lefty hitting catcher after martin is gone.

  491. RS August 4th, 2011 at 11:31 pm

Swisher’s album playing in the clubhouse! lol
