Same lineup as yesterday; A-Rod encouraged

Alex Rodriguez came through today’s workouts with no problems, but he’s still not sure when he’ll be ready to begin playing in games.

“I had an encouraging day today,” Rodriguez told the AP. “I will have a better idea of a timetable in four or five days. The most important thing is to go back healthy.”

Here’s the lineup.

Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Eric Chavez 3B
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C

take your time arod….come back 100%

    a-rod is awesome!

  3. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 4:53 pm

A-Rod will be back soon and he’ll play great. I’d bet on it.

  4. Warning Track Power August 4th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

ARod-Nice to see you in a uniform.

I predict ARod will begin playing rehab games Monday the 8th

tomingeorgia, just don’t venture into the gamethreads, we don’t want you relapsing .

Speaking of gamethreads, I’ll make sure to stay out this weekend if we are trailing at any point in the Fenway games, LOL. One thing I can’t stomach is Red Sox paranoia.

    See you later

JAP, the sanctimonious drivel about Arod this afternoon made me wish for a game thread. I surely wish this had been a day game, both for me and the team on a getaway day.

  6. Tabbert August 4th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

so, is this going to be the new lineup vs rhp from here on out? I love having grandy in that 3 hole. When arod comes back, he goes to fourth and tex and cano move down one spot.

  7. 108 stitches August 4th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

The presence of Alex in the lineup will be felt. This is like a waiver deal fell through the cracks and landed in Yankeeland

  8. fantasygame101 August 4th, 2011 at 4:58 pm

where is nunez? would have been better if nunez plays 3b and chavez dh.

You would’ve really hated being here when ARod was outed for steroids.

The blog leader was leading the charge.

Of course he now is at the Boston Globe.

  10. Warning Track Power August 4th, 2011 at 5:00 pm

I’m surprised Chavez is getting another start.
    6th game in 7 days.
Hope that that does wreck his body.

  11. blake August 4th, 2011 at 5:03 pm

    Id go

    Gardner
    Jeter
    Granderson
    Arod
    Cano
    Tex
    Swisher
    Chavez/Montero/Posada
    Martin

Vs RHap when Alex returns………that’s deep.

  12. tomingeorgia August 4th, 2011 at 5:05 pm

    Maine,
Never saw Pete in action here, nor been to his blog, nor read sports on Boston.com, but jeez, I can’t stand some of the crap I read that accepts anonymous sources in a supermarket tabloid as accepted truth. I don’t know if you saw my account of my time at the National Enquirer. I know what these rags do.

  13. GreenBeret7 August 4th, 2011 at 5:05 pm

Chicago is less likely to bunt on chavez than they are on Nunez. Chavez will be sitting in the first Boston game.

  14. bruceb August 4th, 2011 at 5:07 pm

I really like this lineup. Offensively, it is probably the best we can put out, but I’m surprised Joe didn’t rest a few players with a late-night flight to Boston to follow.

Pete did a good job starting this blog and for the most part did good work.

He could at times get into arguments here with bloggers and did ban some because of that.

He and GB7 were best buddies.

  21. Tabbert August 4th, 2011 at 5:13 pm

    Blake-

I actually think Tex is perfect for the 5th hole. Not sure why the yankees ever thought he was a 3 hole hitter… he is the absolute perfect 5 hole hitter. Imo, cano and grandy should be batting 3rd and sixth.. doesn’t really matter which one bats where.

    Gardy
    Jeter
    Grandy/cano
    Arod
    Tex
    Cano/grandy
    Swisher
    Chavez/montero/posada
    martin

The mashers should always be batting 4-5 with the higher contact hitters hitting right above and below them. Cano and grandy batting 3-6 gives the lineup a lot of balance when guys like tex go on their epic cold streaks. Tex, siwsher, posada, martin… is way to streaky of a bottom 4 for me. If you insert either cano or grandy with that group it balances out the lineup much better imo.

while the Yankees complete a 4 games series with another night game.

    unfair!!

  27. Tabbert August 4th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

The reason he is not resting guys is pretty simple in my opinion. We have a chance for the rare four game sweep of the sox tonight and would be going into boston with the most confidence we have probably had all season. Joe is simply sticking with his hot players in hopes that they can finish this series off on a high note and go into boston with this swagger and manage to take 2/3 from boston and go into monday’s off day with the division lead.

  28. Tabbert August 4th, 2011 at 5:18 pm

the sox actually play the inidans tonight

  29. blake August 4th, 2011 at 5:18 pm

    Tabbert,

I agree….I think he’s a 5 hitter vs RHP and a 3 hole hitter vs LHP. Either way…..id like to get the big bats hitting 3-6 (Granderson, Cano, Arod, and Tex…..however you want to arrange them). It’ll make the lineup longer and more productive IMO.

  33. MG August 4th, 2011 at 5:22 pm

this lineup has been mashing, add Arod in the middle and it becomes absolutely scary.

you know Girardi will put Arod back in the cleanup spot, it’s just a matter of where he puts Gardner but doesn’t matter at all who bats where, after the leadoff hitter in the 1st inning everything else is the same whether Gardner bats 1st or 9th.

    From Alex’s 2005 ‘warning”.

Major League Baseball sources said Rodriguez wasn’t ordered to stay out of the clubs – but added baseball commissioner Bud Selig was “keeping an eye” on him and would step in “if necessary.”

So there goes that talking point.

    http://articles.baltimoresun.c…..cott-boras

What a joke. If I were A-Rod I’d tell Bud to go **** himself and stop bothering me unless he has real charges. I would not even go to an interview.

    Hi everyone,

Tom, didn’t know you were rehabbing your hip. Glad to see that you came out of it.

    Back to baseball:

Blake your line up makes a lot of sense, but i don’t see Tex being demoted to the sixth place in the order so i think the line up will look like this:

    Gardner
    Jeter
    tex
    Arod
    Cano
    Granderson
    Swisher
DH ( Montero, Po or Jones)
    Martin

I don’t care where you put those nine guys in the order, except you’re right about Martin if he doesn’t start hitting, they can put up a bunch of runs on anyone.

  44. luis August 4th, 2011 at 5:33 pm

    Tom,

Unless you start playing him less he is going to break up. That’s why bringing up Montero makes sense, Martin catches three or four days, the rest you put Montero behind the plate. That way you rest Martin, and eventually he will start to hit again. JMHO

  45. MaineYankee August 4th, 2011 at 5:36 pm

I’m not sure it makes sense to put one of the teams top RBI guys down in the order.

  46. tomingeorgia August 4th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

    OK, Luis,
What two are you sending down for Montero and Arod?

  47. tomingeorgia August 4th, 2011 at 5:38 pm

    Maine,
I don’t think it matters much if you have high onbase guys ahead of him.

  48. luis August 4th, 2011 at 5:39 pm

Cervelli is the most obvious one. I would dfa Jones as well….but i don’t think that’s happening anytime soon. Then, you have one more starter than you need right now, i think is going to be Nova unfortunately

  49. luis August 4th, 2011 at 5:41 pm

    Maine,

You are probably right, Granderson should be the third bat, but again i don’t think is happening for the forseeable future.

  50. Giuseppe Franco August 4th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

If they haven’t DFA’d Jones by now, they aren’t going to this season.

Especially since he’s actually been hitting lately.

To tell the truth, the lineup for tonight is pretty good. The question is, who’s going where when Arod returns to cleanup?

  53. jacksquat August 4th, 2011 at 5:46 pm

If Granderson is not hitting 3rd he should hit 2nd, definitely no lower than 5th. Either Jeter or Gardner go the bottom to make room.

  54. luis August 4th, 2011 at 5:47 pm

    GF,

Agreed, but if i have to lose a player to open up a space on the roster that would be my first choice after cervelli.

  56. GreenBeret7 August 4th, 2011 at 5:47 pm

Unless a waiver trade is made involving at least two players, Montero will be up if there’s another DL addition.

  57. luis August 4th, 2011 at 5:50 pm

    Tom,

As i said before, ideally what Blake proposed is what i think should be done. But i don’t see Tex being demoted, so Granderson moves down to the sixth. Or like Jacksquat just said, you move Jeter or Gradner back down, which i think makes sense too.

  58. jacksquat August 4th, 2011 at 5:50 pm

Girardi already said A-Rod will hit 4th when he returns.

If they DFA Jones who’s the 4th outfielder?

  61. Tabbert August 4th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

    MG

I Disagree to a extent… just because you have the same 9 guys in the lineup doesn’t mean it will be just as productive. I believe giriardi has struck gold with this current layout he is using vs rhp. A lineups production can change big time when you move guys into the right spots in the lineup.
You don’t want to be too top heavy, you also have to make sure you don’t put too many streaky hitters behind each other.

  62. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

The Yankees will be fine when A-Rod gets out of jail.

  63. Wave Your Hat August 4th, 2011 at 5:54 pm

    Early September for Montero.

  64. luis August 4th, 2011 at 5:55 pm

    Maine,

Good question…..I”ll say One of the kids from triple A and/or Nunez

  65. Wave Your Hat August 4th, 2011 at 5:58 pm

Hey, with Nunez being both the buck-up infielder and the 4th outfielder the Yanks could carry 14 pitchers and go with a 7 man rotation…

  66. luis August 4th, 2011 at 5:59 pm

    Maine,

Also as i said before we are not going to carry a six man rotation for long.

  67. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 6:00 pm

I fail to understand why anyone would want Andruw DFA’d.

  68. luis August 4th, 2011 at 6:01 pm

    WYH,

LOL!!!, nah!!, but i was just airing my discomfort with having Jones on the roster, But you’ll see after i say something like this, he hit two HR’s…

  69. Tank August 4th, 2011 at 6:02 pm

“I fail to understand why anyone would want Andruw DFA’d.”

So we can get more ABs for future all-stars Laird and Golson.

  70. Tabbert August 4th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

moving tex to the 5th hole is not a demotion at all. He is what a 5th hole hitter should be. .250- .275 average with the ability of 30 plus homers and 100 ribbies. That 3 hole should be for a legit .300 hitter imo.

    speed – gardy
contact – jete ( playing really well since his return)
    contact/power – cano
    contact/power arod
    power – tex
    power/contact/speed – grandy

that’s the exact way a lineup should be laid out. And obviously you could swap grandy and cano.

obviously the bottom 3 are not nearly as lethal but all of them have the ability to drive in runs and get guys over and have productive ab’s.

  71. Giuseppe Franco August 4th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

There is no chance you’ll ever see Jeter bat lower than second in the order this season.

If someone is going to move to the bottom of the order, Girardi will choose Gardner every time.

  72. luis August 4th, 2011 at 6:05 pm

    LGY,

You have in Triple A players more than capable of doing what he has been doing with better fielding capabilities, which is basicly what you want from a fourth outfielder. The counter arguement is that he is hitting lately, which is true as well

  73. Gary August 4th, 2011 at 6:06 pm

One year too many, Joe keeps sending Posada out there every game. I looked at other DH’s in the league and it’s not even close even in the small market cities. Ortiz .289, Hafner .292, Young .334, Butler .296, Thome .252, Martinez .317, Abreu .258, Encarnacion .271, Damon .268. Posada sits at .235. It’s the problem with long term contracts, you are stuck with the guy who can’t do it anymore. I remember all those winter posts begging foir a real DH. I guess the answer is yes, but is this the best we have?

  74. luis August 4th, 2011 at 6:07 pm

    Tabbert,

Very good post, interesting aproach as to how to construct the line up

  75. LGY August 4th, 2011 at 6:07 pm

You have in Triple A players more than capable of doing what he has been doing with better fielding capabilities,

    ——

Which AAA players can Ops 850 against major league. LHP?

  76. MaineYankee August 4th, 2011 at 6:10 pm

    Tabbert

So you put the top two RBI/HR guys in the 5/6 slots?

  77. RS August 4th, 2011 at 6:10 pm

What i think the roster will look like when ARod returns:

    Jeter SS
    Granderson CF
    Tex 1B
    ARod 3B
    Cano 2B
    Swisher RF
    Posada DH
    Martin C
    Gardner LF

    Bench:
    Montero C/DH (hopefully)
    Chavez 1B/3B/DH
    Nunez 2B/SS/3B
    Jones OF/DH

Then they’ll need to work out the pitching staff. I think that rather than have a 6-man rotation and a short bullpen, they’ll either A) send Hughes to the pen, or B) send Nova to AAA to stay stretched out, then bring him up for good in September.

  78. MaineYankee August 4th, 2011 at 6:14 pm

    RS

That batting order looks like what I suspect it will be when ARod returns.

My guess is they go with option B.

  79. luis August 4th, 2011 at 6:15 pm

    LGY,

I’m not going to dispute what Jones has been doing lately, i hope he keeps it up, that’s why i said that the counter argument was that he is hitting

  80. G. Love August 4th, 2011 at 6:21 pm

    Gary,

The way they are just handing Posada DH at bats all season reminds me of how they decided to just grin & bear it with Giambi at 1st toward the end of his deal. You are absolutely right about this being caused by long term contracts. What you hope for the Yankees going forward is they get out of the future long term deals by age 35-36 tops.

They’ll go past that with CC because they have to, but when they sign position players in the future that should be the cut off date.

All winter long a lot of us were campaigning for a true DH to be signed. That said, my top choices of Manny (whoops) and Vlad didn’t exactly pan out.

  81. Tabbert August 4th, 2011 at 6:22 pm

    maineyankee

You obviously have forgotten that Arod ( our best player) has been injured much of the year and i have no doubt in my mind that he would have posted better numbers than either grandy or tex if healthy. No reason to think that arod would not have been the rbi’s leader on the team if he had been healthy all year. Also, Rbi’s and homerun leaders can change year by year so its a silly argument. You base your lineup off of player’s tools… and i tend to prefer to have my mashers further down in the lineup and surrounded by contact hitters.

But, there would be nothing wrong with our teams leaders in rbi’s homers, and average to potentially hit 4,5,6, none what’s so ever. That’s they way a lineup should be built. 1-3 is for guys to get on base and to move people over for the big bats.

Also, you have to realize that grandy and tex can be very very streaky hitters. I tend to prefer guys like arod and cano ( whom both have the ability to hit .300 or better) to be further up in the lineup. Power is great, but contact hitters are what makes a team go. You have to put your best contact hitters in that 3-4 role.

  82. tomingeorgia August 4th, 2011 at 6:22 pm

I’ve spouted off too many times today, because I feel great, despite the Arod nonsense. I’m going to take JAP’s advice and ignore the game thread, and just watch. Many good posts today, but the wet blankets are starting to arrive. As I’ve said before, I just love baseball, and the Yankees are my team. Thanks to this blog, I know more than I ever have about the prospects in the Minors, picked up on a few of the new statistics, heard quite a bit more moralizing than I needed, and by and large, enjoyed myself. To the ladies here, thanks for your moderating influence and humor. Out, for at least a while. (That doesn’t mean I won’t be checking in, though.)

  83. blake August 4th, 2011 at 6:26 pm

    Luis,

I don’t think it’s really a demotion…..he’d still hit 3rd vs LHP. Nelson Cruz routinely hit 6th for Texas last year. I reality though you’re right….I doubt theyd do that and what you mentioned is probably more likely. I really don’t think it matters much as long as you have the big guns 3-6.

I like Gardner/Jeter vs RHP and then the meat of the order to follow.

  84. luis August 4th, 2011 at 6:27 pm

    Tom,

Sad to hear that, it was very nice to discuss baseball with you. I hope that everything turns out for the best…. take care

  85. joeman August 4th, 2011 at 6:30 pm

thought for sure we were going to see Montero in the lineup

  86. Tabbert August 4th, 2011 at 6:32 pm

Do you think there is any chance that if this order stays hot and rolls through this month that when arod comes back he is inserted fourth and everyone just moves down a spot? Or do you think joe will go back to the way it was before arod went out?

Heyman: MLB unlikely to suspend A-Rod
    By Mike Axisa
Via Jon Heyman, MLB is unlikely to suspend Alex Rodriguez for all this gambling nonsense, which should surprise no one. Keith Law did a good job of tearing this whole thing to shreds in his chat today, so allow me to copy and paste: “Absolute waste of everyone’s time. Shame on MLB for pandering to the lowest common denominator in both the media (a large segment of which has long had it in for A-Rod) and the fans. They have NO cause to suspend him, and if they try, they will lose the subsequent grievance in embarrassing fashion. And as you pointed out, the inherent message that MLB cares more about whether and with whom you play ‘illegal’ poker than it does about whether you drive drunk and endanger your life and the lives of others is even MORE

For once….bravo Heyman and bravo Law

    Tabbert,

If Gardner and Jeter continue to hit then my guess is that vs RHP he will go Gardner, Jeter, Tex, Arod , Cano , Granderson. I don’t think that’s necessarily the best way to stack it but I bet that’s what they do. Jeter leads off vs LHP. Personally I would either keep Granderson in the 3 spot or put Cano there.

    Blake,

It may not be a demotion, but it’s going to be perceived like one…Unfortunately perception is everything. Can you imagine the endless media questions about the subject?, thats why i don’t think is happening.

This should be an interesting follow.

“Rudy” is one of the better sports related movie bios in a long time.

    jimcallisBA Jim Callis
#Orioles sign 8th-rder Johnny Ruettiger for $160k. Nephew of Rudy, #ArizonaState OF has good speed & line drive bat, grittiness.

    GB,

I saw that Gary Sanchez article earlier. Thx.

The kids no 18 year old stringbean that’s for sure.

Rudy was a kid that walked on at Notre Dame back when the were good at football and played on the scout team for basically the entire time he was there. He wasn’t nearly big enough or good enough to play but earned the rest of the teams respect and they basically refused to play his senior year unless they put Rudy in uniform for his last game. There was a really good movie about him starring Sam from Lord of the Rings.

One of the lineups I think you will see a lot of when Arod returns is:

    Jeter
    Granderson
    Tex
    Arod – DH
    Cano
    Swisher
    Chavez – 3B
    Martin
    Gardner

When Arod is back I think this lineup is most likely:

    Jeter
    Granderson
    Tex
    Arod
    Cano
    Swisher
    Posada/Chavez/Montero
    Martin
    Gardner

    I like:

    Gardner
    Jeter
    Granderson
    Arod
    Cano
    Tex
    Swisher
    Montero/Chavez/Posada
    Martin

You could really swap Cano and Tex between 5th or 6th… Tough to bat either of them in the 6 spot.

TONS of speed on top and SUPER deep

when Arod comes back & 100% he’s playing 3rd maybe DH once a week

Yadier Molina suspended for 5 games for bumping an umpire and having
his spittle lands on the umpires face, LOL!!!

Dude is not appealing because he has an injury to a palm.

I think the throw home was already in the air when the Indians 3rd base coach waved home speedy Austin Kearns… out by a mile.

Bedard gave up 4 hits in the inning.
