Yankees have signed 15 of top 24 draft picks

The Yankees have signed 15 of their top 24 picks from this year’s draft. The deadline to sign players is next Monday, August 15.

The team’s top pick, Dante Bichette Jr., drove in another run last night and leads the Gulf Coast League with 34 RBI in 34 games. He’s hitting .341/.460/.535 and was named Gulf Coast League Player of the Month for July. Another early standout is 11th-round pick Mark Montgomery — that’s him on the right — who’s already advanced to Low-A Charleston and has 30 strikeouts and five walks in 16.1 innings.

Just a few more quick highlights from the early results of this class: Outfielder Justin James (a 6-foot-5 13th rounder) is hitting .385 with a .500 OBP through his first 11 pro games;  Right-hander Philip Wetherll (also 6-5, 8th rounder) has a 1.10 ERA and 21 strikeouts through 15 relief appearances for Staten Island; Lefty Matthew Tracy (born in Missouri, taken in the 24th round) has allowed one run in 22 relief outings, but coughed up five runs in his only start for Staten Island.

The team has officially announced these signings from the draft:

3B Dante Bichette Jr. (Supplemental first round)
RHP Jordan Cote (3rd round)
INF Matt Duran (4th)
1B Austin Jones (7th)
RHP Philip Wetherell (8th)
RHP Zachary Arneson (9th)
RHP Mark Montgomery (11th)
OF Cody Grice (12th)
OF Justin James (13th)
RHP Branden Pinder (16th)
RHP Hayden Sharp (18th)
RHP Robert Paullus (19th)
INF Zach Wilson (21st)
RHP Corey Maines (23rd)
LHP Matthew Tracy (24th)

    any time, Joe.

You have a Latin kid, stuck in a southern city, with money in his pocket, can’t drive and can’t go where some of his friends go because of his age, and the organization treats him differently than the others. It’s sort of like the highly recruited high school athletic stud going off to the big school and finding out that he’s too young to date a cheer leader, others are just as good and you’re struggling in your classes. That kid has unreal power. In the organization, probably only Montero can top him. not sure if you’ve ever been to Greenville, NC, but the park there is modeled after Fenway (same dimensions and wall). There’s a Met Life building across the parking lot from the wall. In two straight games on the last trip there, Sanchez hit two homers onto the roof of the 7 floor building and another off of a 5th floor wall. He is a big kid, almost as big as Montero. About 6’2?- 6’3? and 225 pounds. I wonder if the experts will label him as too big to be a catcher.

  2. blake August 4th, 2011 at 11:51 am

What’s the deal with the Lefty from Texas? I thinkbhe was the 2nd rounder.

  3. GreenBeret7 August 4th, 2011 at 11:52 am

Bichette’s all over the leader boards in the GCL, except for homers and steals.

With Montgomery, the game to have seen was his 5 strikeouts in one inning. I’ve seen one of his games and a lot of similarites between him and David Robertson. Big fastballs, but, he has that “knock ‘em iin the dirt” slider instead of the curve. Still just 20 years old.

    Thanks.

SI_JonHeyman 26 mins with @JoeyBats19 on noncontending team & adrian/jacoby possibly splitting red sox votes, could @cgrand14 win AL MVP?

See…..the media just dismiss Bautista as a candidate. Doesn’t make it right but he wont win the MVP

  7. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Really depends on the second half and anyone who discounts Miguel Cabrera is making a mistake. Especially if Detroit wins their division which is likely.

  8. Jeremy August 4th, 2011 at 12:09 pm

I love the emphasis on the farm and developing talent. Great job so far by Cashman.

This falls under the argument that the MVP award still has not been clearly defined. Too much ambiguity amonst the voters

    A-Gon will likely win though

  10. Jeremy August 4th, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Also I have a question for any poster that can answer this. If the Yankees win the Division and the Red Sox win the Wild Card who would the Yankees face ? The Central winner and the West winner ?

    And vice versa

  11. Warning Track Power August 4th, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Chad-Why isn’t there a story about Cory Wade? The guy has come out of nowhere and pitched better then anybody could have predicted so far this season.
Time to give the guy some attention.

I loved it when A.J. removed his Yankee jersey last night in the dugout. That told me he was not worthy of wearing the Jersey based on his poor performance on the mound.

Girardi did the right thing by taking him out of the game.
Why A.J. is unable to take control of the #2 starter role is making my headache

Answering your question from yesterday, if you was here you’d probably wear a jacket.

Sunny and in the 70′s today.

    Just right.

Yankees would play the team with the worse record of the West and Central division

    If the playoffs started today:

    Yankees (Sabathia) vs Texas (Wilson)
Red Sox (Lester) vs Detroit (Verlander)

    Phillies (Halladay) vs Brewers (Gallardo/Greinke)
    Giants (Lincecum) vs Braves (Hudson/Juirjins)

Pretty good matchups…..loads of star power.

I hear that Mark Montgomery is a Dave Robertson clone. Also, are there any guys that are unsigned that if the Yankees do sign would make this a successful draft?

Can’t the twins get in there? Yankees seem to own the twins in the playoffs.

  30. blake August 4th, 2011 at 12:38 pm

I don’t like to wish for any opponent. Verlander is tough though…..but so is Texas’s lineup. The RHP of the Tigers would be a tougher matchup for the Yanks hitters though I think.

GB – roof of a 7th floor building across the street? Wow.
Mark Montgomery sounds very interesting. Sounds like he’s got ML stuff right now. He’s only 20 and just out of college, so some mL time, to get used to being a professional ballplayer, is not a bad idea. The NY bullpen is well stocked at the moment.

Chad – can always count on you to mention the Missouri boys!

tomingeorgia – congrats. we all knew you could do it.

One of the amusing things about this board is the excessive and IMO unwarranted paranoia that is expressed constantly; everyone is out to get the Yankees.

    1. Everyone throws at our hitters.
    2. The media hates us.
    3. They are targeting A-Rod.
    4. MLB makes up schedules to work against us.
    5. The umps strike zones are always more unfair to us.

    . . . and on and on.

What you say may be true, but regarding A-Rod, can you honestly say MLB hasn’t targeted him specifically? That there are not others in MLB that actually do deserve punishment for real crimes?

  45. Jeremy August 4th, 2011 at 12:59 pm

    Thanks Blake !

Yeah those pitching match ups look great. This is going to be a really fun postseason. I just hope the Yankees go far.

But I rather face the Rangers because there pitching doesn’t look as good as last year. Also I’m afraid of the Yankees facing verlander twice and playing at Comerica a pitchers park.

    *****************

That may or may not be true when it comes to this particular poker incident. I hope it is not true. However, whatever glare of the media and tabloid spotlight is in A-Rod’s eyes is entirely, 100% of his own doing. You don’t see this kind of story written about Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Mariano, Posada or Teixeira do you?

For years now, A-Rod has walked that line. An admitted steroid user, he was warned by MLB about past associations with gamblers in 2005, he was a patient of the doctor who is still under federal investigation for alleged illegal practices, he continues the association with his less than reputable cousin and ex-drug mule which includes traveling with him on road trips.

At least rational, realistic Yankee fans could agree that A-Rod has shown really poor judgment over the years. I would bet you that Yankee management feels exactly the same way.

Those issues are handled by the legal system as they are criminal acts. And Larussa and Cabrera are not A-Rod. He is a national figure, they are not. Hence the difference in media attention.

As to MLB’s reaction. The are not moral police, they are there to protect the integrity of the game. If you notice A-Rod’s issues have been all centered around performance enhancing drug use and gambling.

Why not let ARod tell his side of the story and then people can judge him.

Better yet, why didn’t MLB discipline the drunk on the Tigers several months ago?
Imagine if ARod was drunk behind the wheel, ESPN would have devoted a 2 hour special and brought in experts to determine just how many ounces of booze ARod had.

A ton of good info on Jordan Cote:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/boston.....n-h-s-cote

He seems to have great upside.

  71. AldotheApache August 4th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

MLB and westy have one thing in common … they are both the least qualified to determine anyone else’s shortcomings, given their own long, long list of failures.

Baseball looks the other way whenever it benefits them (just like westy does with reality). When it comes to integrity, MLB (AND westy) should examine his own house first.

Let he who is without sin etc etc etc …

  72. tomingeorgia August 4th, 2011 at 1:23 pm

    WCYF,
Arod is not an elected public servant. He has not tested positive for anything in quite a while. He’s rich and famous and likes pretty women, thus is a target for pubs like the Star.

I interned years ago for the National Enquirer, when the front page often had a picture of a train wreck. A picture of Farrah Fawcett in a tennis outfit with a worried look on her face came in one day, obviously destined for Page One. The whole “newsroom” voted on the headline. After a debate, the winner was, “Farrah Fears for her Life!” You can look it up. Made up of whole cloth, not a shred of evidence. Naturally, it was one of the top-selling issues of the year.

All I care about is that Arod stay clean and play his customary brand of baseball. I don’t really care what else he does, unless it’s a felony, and neither should MLB.

Exactly, and MLB’s job is not to adjudicate or pass judgement on players for legal transgressions. That is law enforcement and the court’s role.

Baseball’s responsibility is to the integrity of the game and that is why drug use and gambling get’s their attention.

NEW YORK — David Ortiz believes then-legal supplements and vitamins likely caused him to land on a 2003 list of alleged drug users seized by the federal government, and Major League Baseball and the players’ association said some of the players on the list never tested positive for performance-enhancing substances.

MLB said in a statement Saturday that 96 urine samples, at most, tested positive in the 2003 survey — and the players’ association said 13 of those were in dispute.

    Bryant: Mixed Messages

Josh Hamilton and David Ortiz each had opportunities to clear their conscience Saturday, but only one — Hamilton — sounded like a human being, writes Howard Bryant. Story

The government seized the samples and records of 104 players from baseball’s drug-testing companies in 2004 as part of the BALCO investigation into Barry Bonds and others. The list of players said to have tested positive, attached to a grand jury subpoena, is part of a five-year legal fight, with the union trying to force the government to return what federal agents took during raids.

“I definitely was a little bit careless back in those days when I was buying supplements and vitamins over the counter — legal supplements, legal vitamins over the counter — but I never buy steroids or use steroids,” Ortiz said during a news conference that began about 3½ hours before his Boston Red Sox played the New York Yankees.

“I never thought that buying supplements and vitamins, it was going to hurt anybody’s feelings.”

The New York Times reported last month that Ortiz and Manny Ramirez were on the 2003 list and said earlier that Sammy Sosa was on it. In February, Sports Illustrated reported Alex Rodriguez was on it, and Rodriguez later admitted he had used performance-enhancing substances from 2001 to 2003.

    [+] Enlarge
    AP Photo/Frank Franklin II
Union general counsel Michael Weiner, left, said the MLBPA couldn’t tell Ortiz if he had tested positive, only that he was on the 2003 list.
Ortiz said when he met with union lawyer Michael Weiner in 2004, he wasn’t told he tested positive for steroids. Weiner, who has been designated to succeed union head Donald Fehr, said that because the list is under court seal, the union couldn’t confirm to Ortiz that he tested positive, only that he was on the list.

“I want to apologize to fans for the distraction, my teammates, our manager,” Ortiz said, flanked by Weiner, with Boston manager Terry Francona standing behind and to the side. “This past week has been a nightmare to me.”

Some players past and present — notably Hall of Famer Hank Aaron — have called for the entire list to be released.

“Sure, there are some people who say ‘Why don’t we just get this story over with and get the list out?’” Weiner said. “I think to do that would one, be illegal, and two, be wrong. It’s illegal because it’s covered by court order, and it would be wrong because a promise was made by the commissioner’s office and the union to every player who was tested in 2003 that the results would be anonymous.”

Ortiz is against the list becoming public.

“I don’t think that I would really like to see another player going through what I’ve been through this past week,” he said.

    What is MLB investigating?

A-Rod likes playing poker, being in shape, and dating blonds. How is any of this a bad thing?

  76. jacksquat August 4th, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Why single out A-Rod? Is he the only baseball player playing poker, or gambling? I highly doubt it. It doesn’t matter if he was warned before, playing poker is playing poker.

A-Rod is being singled out by Selig because Selig couldn’t get him for the steroid use, and he wants to get him because he doesn’t want another steroid user passing his hero Hank Aaron. Everyone saw how flustered Bud got when Bonds was about to pass Aaron. This is all this is.

I understand. But what if the allegations wee true and MLB knew about them and did not investigate them? In light of their warning to A-Rod in 2005 and Pete Rose’s past lesson to the game, would that have been the right thing to do?

MLB has not accused or convicted him of anything. All they said is they are investigating the story. They have to.

Bud reads the magazine every week and at his old age, the man obviously believes this magazine is credible enough to ruin ARod for the time being.

Its not secret Bud Selig and Hank Aaron are very close friends.
Bud probably believes he needs to look out for his friend and do anything/everything he can(legal or not) to prevent ARod from breaking his dear friends’ HR record.

  81. West Coast Yankee Fan August 4th, 2011 at 1:30 pm

It is just a story that is being investigated. That’s all. If not true, which I suspect is the case, it will go away.

  82. Warning Track Power August 4th, 2011 at 1:31 pm

    WCYF-
Why make this story public and literally assume ARod’s guilty?
    Here’s an idea:
Keep the story out of the public eye until a full investigation has been concluded.

  83. I Am Winning August 4th, 2011 at 1:32 pm

The only way investigating ARod’s gambling issues could be, even slightly, justified is if they stated illegal gambling makes the game look bad, and therefor cause the game to loss revenue, for whatever reason.

However, an easy counter argument is that MLB and Selig have brought about 99% of the media attention and negativity brought forth.

I’ve gambled in someones basement for $20 once. Does that constitute as illegal gambling? Does that mean that I am willing to take bribes at work? Of course not.

This is a joke. I don’t hate Selig, but it’s obvious he is trying to put his name out there furthermore, and making an example of a player for a non-issue.

  84. heyman_sux August 4th, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Please folks, I beg of you – do not be a conspiracy theorist!

MLB will “interrogate” A-Rod, but it’s all for show. They have no grounds on which to act, anyhow.

They are doing their due dilligence so that down the line, if another player has a similar incident (that turns out to be uglier), they can act in some capacity. As for why A-Rod is being “singled out”…he’s not. I’m sure he understood the extra attention he would get when he started hanging with the TMZ crowd

If we win the division I think I’d rather face Detroit. It seems like it’s always the home pitcher who wins the Verlander/Sabathia matchups, and we’d have that advantage. Our 3-4 pitchers have pitched well in Detroit, and the Tigers have nothing good after Verlander, and a mediocre pen.

The Yankees have dominated the Rangers this year, but they are still a scary team, and I think they matchup against the Sox well, so I’d rather see those two teams face off.

I retract my previous choice. I’d rather see the Yanks play the Tigers. And I would like for Valverde to blow the clinching game

  93. Warning Track Power August 4th, 2011 at 1:38 pm

MLB could have easily released a statement about the alleged Star Magazine story and distanced themselves.
Instead MLB office clung to that magazine and their story and ran with it.
    Why-
Because Bud Selig wants to ruin ARod and protect his friends HR Record.
    Plain and simple!!!

If ARod crosses the street the wrong way, MLB offices and their investigators will be there to make sure the public has knowledge of how ARod does not cross a street properly.

  98. pat August 4th, 2011 at 1:43 pm

“In light of their warning to A-Rod in 2005 ”

Yankees officials cautioned A-Rod six years ago to keep away from high-stakes card games after the Daily News reported he had been playing at underground clubs in New York.

MLB never officially warned A-Rod, but sent word to him through the Yankees to stay away from underground poker games.

Tom in N.J. – that’s why I refuse to even click on these type of articles when they’re referenced on-line. Throw something out there – even if it’s not completely investigated – just to draw readers. This is yellow journalism at it’s finest.

  100. tomingeorgia August 4th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Look who gets the media attention: superstars like Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Tiger Woods, Phelps the swimmer. Doesn’t matter what they do or did, they’re in the tabloids. John Danks isn’t. Nobody knows what he does in his off-hours, and nobody cares, so nobody writes stories about it.

  101. Warning Track Power August 4th, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Yellow journalism or the yellow press is a type of journalism that presents little or no legitimate well-researched news and instead uses eye-catching headlines to sell more newspapers. Techniques may include exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism. By extension “Yellow Journalism” is used today as a pejorative to decry any journalism that treats news in an unprofessional or unethical fashion.

Sensationalism is a type of editorial bias in mass media in which events and topics in news stories and pieces are over-hyped to increase viewership or readership numbers. Sensationalism may include reporting about generally insignificant matters and events that don’t influence overall society and biased presentations of newsworthy topics in a sensationalist, trivial or tabloid manner.

That’s the world we live in. It all comes down to money which translates into readers and viewers. If people were not interested in celebrities the media wouldn’t write stories about them. Living in the Los Angeles area, seeing paparazzi is as common as the sun. There is not a restaurant, gym, club or clothing store that celebrities are known to frequent that does not have them waiting outside.

  104. Tom in N.J. August 4th, 2011 at 1:53 pm

From the DN about his 2005 ‘warning’:

“No one admonished him,” one source said at the time, “but he was made aware that this could put him in an unflattering light or look bad in the media” – but they ultimately found no grounds for discipline.

“There’s nothing he’s doing that violates the morals clause,” one baseball lawyer said in November of 2005. “Mostly it’s just stupid. Why put himself in a position like that? Why doesn’t he go play in an apartment somewhere?”

The media is like a big game of “telephone” lately. A statement gets twisted, repeated and twisted again and then gets written as truth way too often and the Internet makes it so much easier these day to find the truth so lazy journalism or intentional sensationalism is the only reason for it.

  110. Tom in N.J. August 4th, 2011 at 2:00 pm

    Hi everyone,

My two cents on the Arod story. Gambling as far as i know is not illegal, especially a poker game. If he was betting on baseball games, then that’s another story. This would be a none issue if the player involved was Bubba Crosby. But i have to agree with several previous posts that he is a big name that brings readers and money to the media, so whatever he does, he is going to be escrutinized to the very end. Unfortunate but true.

  112. Doc Iac August 4th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Pat, well said. Many are quick to sensationalize everything.

  114. JM August 4th, 2011 at 2:16 pm

The Internet actually makes it much easier for false information, accusations, insinuations to spread like wildfire, and much more difficult for retractions, etc. to get out.

Unfortunately the public seems to have an insatiable appetite for celebrity news/gossip, whatever you want to call it. If it did not sell papers or drive traffic to websites, it would not be disseminated to the extent that it is.
