The basics of the Ivan Nova situation

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 05, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I’ll have more later, but very quickly…

Ivan Nova is still on the active roster, and the plan is to keep him with the team, but his role is still undecided.

Phil Hughes will be available as an emergency long reliever on Saturday and Sunday. The plan is still for him to start on Tuesday, but if things get crazy this weekend, Hughes will be available out of the bullpen, and if he’s used, next week’s rotation will be shuffled.

As it stands, Hughes and A.J. Burnett are still the probable starters for Tuesday and Wednesday, and Joe Girardi said it’s possible Nova could start on Thursday, which would give CC Sabathia an extra day of rest. But that’s still undecided.

Basically, keeping Nova around gives the Yankees options in the way they use Hughes this weekend, and it gives them options for their rotation next week.

“I just know that I’m here,” Nova said.

I’ve got to wonder why Hughes moves to the pen instead of Nova…

    ==========================================

Phil Hughes threw only 65 pitches in his rain shortened start on TUESDAY. Ivan Nova threw 102 pitches going into the 8th inning in his start on THURSDAY. Nova simply can’t be expected to pitch so soon after his outing.

  2. Captain Clutch August 5th, 2011 at 5:29 pm

Ubaldo is pitching tonight on the road against Texas. It will be interesting to see how he does against that lineup.

  3. RadioKev August 5th, 2011 at 5:30 pm

    repost:

    jpb173,

That’s a fair point. I actually meant more the principle of the idea, not really the context of just this weekend.

  4. 4 NYY August 5th, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Nova has earned his spot PERIOD !

Too bad $$$ ( contracts ) gets in the way of success !

    Not referring to Hughes

  5. Irreverent Discourse August 5th, 2011 at 5:34 pm

I’d imagine that Nova/Hughes will be rotating a start and a “throw day” in the pen for the rest of the season.

I’m honestly unsure if I even like Yanks-Red Sox series at Fenway. The games are usually long rollercoaster rides. At least since 2009.
    —————————–

The games have been long rollercoaster rides since at least 2003. The thing about Fenway is that you’re always in the game. The Yanks play Fenway better than any other visiting team and combining that with the obvious advantage the Sox have there produces some crazy games.

  7. Triple Short of a Cycle August 5th, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Its really amazing how Brett Gardner is still not a regular

    —————————–

It will be interesting but there’s no way he’d be a Yankee for what the Rockies wanted. He can go 10-0 down the stretch for all I care and it still wouldn’t bother me. That trade was never going anywhere because of O’Dowd.

  9. RhapsodyInBlue August 5th, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Joe likes Jorge career .261 BA and .320 OBP against Lester.

  10. RadioKev August 5th, 2011 at 5:36 pm

I just realized how I feel about AJ Burnett. He’s kind of like Gollum from Lord of the Rings. I think he’ll play his part yet.

In all seriousness, the guy helped us win a World Series. Complain all you want, but you can’t ignore that. He has the ability to do it again.

  11. Bx is Burning August 5th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Re: a few posts on the last thread, Po is 6 for 23 all time vs. Lester.
He had a couple of hits in the June loss.

  12. RhapsodyInBlue August 5th, 2011 at 5:38 pm

Maybe it’s the zero homeruns that Jorge has off of Lester that influenced Joe’s decision.

  13. Captain Clutch August 5th, 2011 at 5:39 pm

It will be interesting but there’s no way he’d be a Yankee for what the Rockies wanted
    ———-

I agree but I am just curious to see how he looks. Once they started talking about the B’s and Montero I wasn’t interested and hoped that Cashman and Randy Levine would agree lol

  14. RadioKev August 5th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

Gardner is 1/6 against Lester. C’mon now. It’s not like Girardi is on LSD here.

  15. Triple Short of a Cycle August 5th, 2011 at 5:41 pm

    RadioKev,

He pitched 1dominant game that year in the playoffs. Its amazing how people keep on bringing up that one game as if that justifies what he has done the other almost 3 years. if the playoffs started tomorrow I doubt he even starts a game

  16. RhapsodyInBlue August 5th, 2011 at 5:41 pm

Joe like Muhammed Ali has been punched in the head too many times.

  17. Bx is Burning August 5th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

    Funny, Kev.
Hard to imagine Flattop Joe on acid. :)

  18. jacksquat August 5th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Gardner is a regular, he has played against many lhp. Please stop the hyperbole.

  19. RadioKev August 5th, 2011 at 5:43 pm

    Triple Short of a Cycle,

It’s amazing how people justify trading for/paying the contract of Damaso Marte for his series against the Phillies. People have said the same of Soriano too, if he comes back and helps in a big time playoff situation, the contract is worth it.

What’s your point? AJ pitched in a three man rotation in the 2009 playoffs. He was a critical piece.

  20. Triple Short of a Cycle August 5th, 2011 at 5:44 pm

    jacksquat,

So we should expect Ellsbury to sit against a tough lefty tomorrow as well right?

  21. RhapsodyInBlue August 5th, 2011 at 5:44 pm

What I like about Gardner in the line up is that he manufactures runs without the long ball.

We have enough other options in the line up without Posada for that purpose.

  22. Triple Short of a Cycle August 5th, 2011 at 5:45 pm

    RadioKev,

He pitched one good game. He got bombed in another and pitched ok at best in the other one. Marte wasn’t signed to a 5 year deal to be our number 2 starter and he did more in that playoffs then AJ ever did

  23. RhapsodyInBlue August 5th, 2011 at 5:46 pm

Meaning that Posada is in to hit the long ball.

Not for his blazing thunder thigh speed on the base paths.

  24. fantasygame101 August 5th, 2011 at 5:47 pm

If joe keeps on looking back in the past to justify his players. I think we should bring back Brosius, tino, bernie, even david wells.

  25. Triple Short of a Cycle August 5th, 2011 at 5:47 pm

Posada and Jones should both be sitting tonight

  26. RhapsodyInBlue August 5th, 2011 at 5:47 pm

Girardi is beginning to get on my nerves.

  27. tomingeorgia August 5th, 2011 at 5:48 pm

Damn, I’m biting my tongue not responding to the doom sayers.

  28. RhapsodyInBlue August 5th, 2011 at 5:50 pm

I’m not a doomsayer I want our best team on the field tonight.

  29. mick August 5th, 2011 at 5:50 pm

Didn’t we trade Tabata, Ohlendorf, and Karstens for him and another bust?

  31. Bret The Hitman August 5th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

Gardner can be used as a weapon off the bench. Stop worrying about him. And stop worrying about Phil.

  32. waka flocka August 5th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

I can’t believe Posada is starting against Lester because Girardi ‘likes the match up’. Really? You like 6 for 23 with 2BB, 0XBH, (good for an OPS of .581)? Gardner has six at-bats against Lester and generally hits lefties alright. He also takes Andruw Jones out of the field and is basically our only base stealing threat. What the hell is Girardi thinking?

  33. Villa Nova-Ya August 5th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

    tomingeorgia -

I’m right there with ya! Hang in there.

  34. Bret The Hitman August 5th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Phil can be a weapon out of the pen.

  35. jacksquat August 5th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Ellsbury has nothing to do with the Yankees situation. Plus, Ellsbury is hitting a hell of a lot better than Gardner.

You guys are acting like the league MVP was removed from the lineup.

  36. Warning Track Power August 5th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Posada is going to play pepper with the green monster tonight.

    Expect something similar from Martin.

  37. fantasygame101 August 5th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

I think it was the Xmen (nady).

  38. Triple Short of a Cycle August 5th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

    mick,

Chavez and third and DH Nunez

  39. 108 stitches August 5th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

The Yankees can’t live on what Burnett did in 2009. What he’s pitching like now is what matters and that’s as a No. 6 starter. (If) he ever shows consistency for a period of time another look is taken. His yearly salary of $16.5M is no reason to keep him slotted where he is. There’s 5 pitchers showing better and the team needs to go with the best it’s got especially with the road schedule the way it is for the rest of the season.

  40. mick August 5th, 2011 at 5:54 pm

who would you dh ? chavez?
    =======================
Wait! I’ll answer my own question.
    Montero is the answer.

  41. RhapsodyInBlue August 5th, 2011 at 5:54 pm

I would rather have Posada used as a weapon off the bench.

  42. Bret The Hitman August 5th, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Nunez in the field in a huge game tonight.

  43. Triple Short of a Cycle August 5th, 2011 at 5:55 pm

    RadioKev,

and whats your point? It was a good trade at the time imo

“I just realized how I feel about AJ Burnett. He’s kind of like Gollum from Lord of the Rings. I think he’ll play his part yet.”

    That’s funny :)

  45. Bret The Hitman August 5th, 2011 at 5:55 pm

With Gardner off the bench and Phil out of the pen…shows you how deep this team is this weekend. Gotta love it.

  46. Triple Short of a Cycle August 5th, 2011 at 5:55 pm

    Bret The Hitman,

    i agree. its insane

  47. blake August 5th, 2011 at 5:56 pm

Start Nova on Wednesday. Send AJ to the Mines of Moria

  48. Bret The Hitman August 5th, 2011 at 5:56 pm

  50. Bret The Hitman August 5th, 2011 at 5:57 pm

Do you trust Nunez in the field in a big game? I don’t. That’s why I wanted Keppinger. We’ll see how he does tonight. NOONER!

  51. mick August 5th, 2011 at 5:57 pm

    Why not experiment?
If you lose a game because of it (or win one) you could learn something for the playoffs.
JUst like starting Freddy over Phil on Sunday.

  52. TD213 August 5th, 2011 at 5:58 pm

Jesus is hitting .309 with a .912 OPS and .553 SLG against lefties this year. 12 XBH in 94 ABs, only 19 Ks.

  53. Triple Short of a Cycle August 5th, 2011 at 5:58 pm

    RhapsodyInBlue,

and one of those guys isn’t playing tonight

  54. Bret The Hitman August 5th, 2011 at 5:59 pm

Which team leads in PPA? Without looking, I’d guess the Red Sox. Which team leads in fouled off pitches on 2 strike counts? Again, without peeking, I’d say Boston. They never seem to just DIE when I want them to.

  55. fantasygame101 August 5th, 2011 at 5:59 pm

AJ situation is much puzzling than hughes. At least hughes is coming from injuries, changing his grip, etc. On AJ’s situation, there is no info on what is being corrected in between starts and if there is progress on that aspect. I think AJ should just target 5 innings and let go his fastball and not conserve energy.

  56. mick August 5th, 2011 at 5:59 pm

Once again.Keep Pedroia off the bases and we beat them. He is their motor.

  57. LGY August 5th, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Nunez in the field in a huge game tonight.

    ——

Tonight is only a huge game to the fans and players like Swisher trying to appeal to those fans.

  58. Bret The Hitman August 5th, 2011 at 6:00 pm

It sucks that Pedroia has returned. I hate the little bugger…SO MUCH!!!

  59. tomingeorgia August 5th, 2011 at 6:02 pm

    Villa Nova,
I like what I saw in the off season (Colon, Garcia), and I like what I see now. My friends, there’s a Red Sox Yankees game on tonight. Maybe Jones hits two out tonight, maye he doesn’t. Gonna be a hell of a game, either way. Ill be watching on my pitiful internet, and Ill root for them all.

  60. blake August 5th, 2011 at 6:02 pm

I hate Pedroia but he could play on my team anytime.

    Hi everyone,

It’s not……Hughes is a 25 year old pitcher, whoo is learning his trade ( Pitching )….on the other hand AJ is 34 year old pitcher with declining stuff and up to this point uncapable to adjust.

  62. fantasygame101 August 5th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

ellsbury and pedroia are key to the red sox bec. they hit hrs, hit for average and steal bases. Plus the adrian’s shift is not all the way if they are on.

Agreed. Personally, I can’t wait until the series is over. Too much BS when these teams get together.

    tomingeorgia August 5th, 2011 at 6:02 pm

    Tom,

Last time i offer to pay his one way ticket to Curacao he hit two HR, so……i offer it again!!!lol

  65. yanks 27 August 5th, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Pedroia – another guy outperforming his “projections”. Who ever pegged him as an MVP candidate and guy who would put up .860 OPS in 3 of his first 5 full seasons coming out of Arizona?

Ellsbury is another. Never thought he would become the hitter he has. Remains to be seen if he can sustain it, but the spike is remarkable.

  66. fantasygame101 August 5th, 2011 at 6:07 pm

luis… Is it declining stuff or trying to decrease velocity for control? AJ was rothschild first project, I think it was him who brought the idea of control over mph. Halladay got AJ to listen to him and thereby AJ follows his suggestion.

  67. tomingeorgia August 5th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

    Luis,
I’d pay his fare to Pittsburgh, but I’m sure he’d rather go home. I expect somebody to pick him up for next year, for just this role.

  68. luis August 5th, 2011 at 6:09 pm

    fantasygame101 August 5th, 2011 at 6:07 pm

You know what?, you might have a point there…wish we could know for sure though

  69. luis August 5th, 2011 at 6:11 pm

    Tom,

Maybe he’ll hit three now!!, yup i just hope is not the yankees though

  70. fantasygame101 August 5th, 2011 at 6:11 pm

    Luis,

That is why people are angered about the AJ situation is that they have no idea what is going on. People only see bad results. And this has been going on for a long time

  71. Captain Clutch August 5th, 2011 at 6:19 pm

jnorris427 Per his agent, Romine has small inflammation in a couple of disks in his back and should be ready to go “In a couple of weeks.”

  72. Betsy August 5th, 2011 at 6:19 pm

Hughes to the pen tells you that it’s Nova who is staying in the rotation……..

  73. Jeremy August 5th, 2011 at 6:19 pm

When will some just finally admit that Burnett sucks !

The guy is a .500 pitcher and just because he pitched one good game in the Postseason does not make him something special. It seems like some want to continue to justify Burnett’s poor play and this myth-idea that he will shine at some point. After two and a half years of watching pathetic performances from Burnett you would think some would get a clue.

  74. Jerkface August 5th, 2011 at 6:21 pm

Romine’s back trouble maybe be good reason to hang on to Montero.

  75. Betsy August 5th, 2011 at 6:21 pm

Ok, I misread it – it’s not definite that Phil will be used in the pen, but I expect that to happen because things always happen at Fenway. I think that’s a bad move, but it’s not surprising. The pen is always going to be looked at as a crutch for Phil – IMO, he should remain a starter, period – no more of this shuttling back and forth.

  76. LGY August 5th, 2011 at 6:24 pm

The fact that tonight isn’t a big game is precisely why Bud The Dud Selig needs to do something to put the wild card at a real disadvantage.

  77. RS August 5th, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Ellsbury has a great build and always showed the ability to hit to the opposite field, so I’m not surprised he’s suddenly hitting for both average and power.

“The fact that tonight isn’t a big game is precisely why Bud The Dud Selig needs to do something to put the wild card at a real disadvantage.”

The extra wild card next year should do the trick.

Now, there is no incentive to win the division. Next year, there is all the incentive in the world to win it otherwise you will have to end up playing an extra round (3 games probably), not being able to lineup your rotation at all, and the travel schedule will be very hectic while the division winner can rest and lineup their rotation.

I’d rather be a little rusty than having to do that much traveling in such a short amount of time and not being able to lineup my rotation.

  81. Bret The Hitman August 5th, 2011 at 6:28 pm

    Betsy August 5th, 2011 at 6:19 pm

Hughes to the pen tells you that it’s Nova who is staying in the rotation……..

    *********

It’s just for one weekend. The decision is not binding…or is it?

  82. Betsy August 5th, 2011 at 6:28 pm

Luis, it’s a mistake – he’s either a starter or a reliever. He shouldn’t be available at all – do they want to start him or not? I think Nova deserves to be in the rotation, so Phil should be at AAA starting………..The pen should never be an option for him until the team gives up on him as a starter.

  83. RadioKev August 5th, 2011 at 6:28 pm

My point on AJ is that people are overly harsh on him, is all. I’d take his tenure as a Yankee over many of the other FA pitchers the team picked up over the past decade. People welcome his failures much more than successes. He is what he is, a .500 pitcher, a mixed bag.

I’m just noting that he’s mixed, not all bad.

  84. Betsy August 5th, 2011 at 6:29 pm

Bret, there’s just no reason to screw with Phil as a starter now – they can find someone to pitch in an emergency. Why him? Let Noesi pitch. If they really want to see what Phil can bring to the table this year, he needs to start somewhere on a regular basis, not have his routine disrupted. I think this decision blows.

  85. luis August 5th, 2011 at 6:31 pm

    Fantasygame101,

Let me expand on the issue…..I always liked AJ, i think he tries his best everytime out, he is a very good teammate, but deep down i think he doesn’t have the ability to become the starter everyone envisioned him to be….Maybe you are right and he has exchange velocity for control or his stuff is diminished and he can’t get away from mistakes like he used to….But in any case you are right it’s frustrating to say the least.
