Yankees take out the Red Sox, take over first place
The Yankees have regained control of the American League East. In the opener of a three-game series at Fenway, the Yankees rallied to beat the Red Sox 3-2 and take over first place in the division. Nick Swisher drove in the go-ahead run in a three-run sixth inning, but it was the Yankees bullpen that did the heavy lifting with 4.1 scoreless innings. Boone Logan and Cory Wade got key, inning-ending outs, and the late-inning trio of Rafael Soriano, Dave Robertson and Mariano Rivera handled seventh, eighth and ninth. It was the Yankees eighth straight win, and the first win against Boston since April 9.

Reversal of fortune
Just a great win. Logan getting AGon was the big moment there
Great bullpen work. Logan with the biggest out!
This will be one of the best times to read Red Sox blogs!! I’m sure they’re even going to be killing Lester on their boards.
Wow great game tonight
Good job by Girardi
Great game. Fantastic.
Love the picture. Yankees went in hard to second all night. That’s got Kelliher’s fingerprints all over it.
Great way to start the series.
Incredible job by the bullpen.
Maybe Yankee fans will stop pumping this myth that the Red Sox always grind it out and come back.
They have like 2 late inning comeback wins all season.
Finally! Feels good to beat them. Bullpen was outstanding tonight.
Agreed. Logan was GREAT tonight.
Anyone surprised that Soriano didn’t implode? Nice to see he handled the 7th inning well.
That was one of the most satisfying wins of the year. Bar none.
Awwwww. Yankees back in first place, where they belong. That despite ELLSBURY LEADING OFF FOR THE SUX – right LGY, wherever you are?
GO YANKEES!!!!
Hi and bye to all here whom I love dearly, and you know who you are.
That’s 8 left siders in a row with CC and “you were my lackey” tomorrow. I expect 9 heading into sunday night where the chief duels with slow walker.
Great Win…this game showed that the bullpen as is will be huge in the postseason and make up for the lack of a true #2-3 starter….but we will still need more offense, especially in playoffs….Chavez and Montero as a DH platoon could be playoff heroes!!!!
Absolutely fantastic to see the RS leading the wild card standings.
Girardi gets a gold star tonight…..along with basically the entire bullpen. The offense was patient and weathered the storm with Lester and then came through when he tired.
Just a great win and now theyll have a chance to take the series with CC tomorrow.
Great picture of little Pedey Pan flying through the air!
Just yesterday I was reading in the media how Boston’s bullpen was the BEST in the game. Yeah? So what about the Yanks? Boston was shut down.
Did you feel that? That change in the air, light, a general sense of well-being…..
Order has been restored in the universe.
Love winning a low scoring game at Fenway.
All winter long we heard about how invincible this Red Sox team was. How they were head and shoulders better than this yankee team – a team that was supposed to be in shambles after losing out on cliff lee.
The Yankees pitching was hopeless. It was completely non-competitive compared to this 5 ace boston rotation that was going to anchor a historically great red sox team. The modern incarnation of the ’27 yankees.
And when the games were actually played – all season long the Yankees pitching has been significantly better than the Sox.
And on a night where the Sox had their ace out on the mound and the Yankees had Tumbleweed Colon on the hill the Yanks win a 3-2 game to move into sole possession of first place in August.
This has been one of the most enjoyable yankee teams to watch that I can remember. What a great season it’s been so far.
Special “hi” to Joe from LI.
See ya!

That was one of the most satisfying wins of the year. Bar none.
~~~~~~~~
Without a doubt!
Great win. I’ll admit I was cursing Girardi for pulling Colon, but it was a fantastic move. The pen was brilliant. Soriano did his job. Wade did his. Robbie & Mo as usual.
Timely hitting. Good D.
I have to say this was the calmest I was watching one of these games. I always had a feeling the Yankees were winning this one. I never had a doubt.
I said it when it happened. The logan whiff was the turning point in the season series with Boston this year.
Sutcliffe: I think Boone Logan put himself on the postseason roster with that AB vs. Gonzalez
LOL
What a win!!, Logan deserves a lot of credit, that K to Agon was huge!!, sweet victory, i am exhausted!!, i wish we can win a laugher tomorrow.
July 2011 was the best on record EVER for the Red Sox. And we were right there with them the whole way! I want to start hearing more about the Yankees. I’m so sick of the media’s worship of that team.
And we didn’t even have Arod in our lineup tonight.
Hi yourself, trish. Be well.
CB – good to “see” you here. Nice way to help celebrate a big win.
We beat Boston and a CB sighting….can this night get any better
Teams are going to be terrified of that bullpen come October. It really is a 6 inning game.
I have to say that I’m shocked that they have been able to put together this win streak without Alex in the lineup. Good job by the other guys picking up the slack.
Ubaldo Jimenez 5 innings, 7 hits, 5 earned runs, 3 walks, 7 strikeouts and 107 pitches before removed against the Rangers. Glad Cashman didn’t trade Nova/Hughes, Montero, Betances for him!!
A CB sighting!! Hope all is well with you. Come back more often!!
Congrats folks – Terrific win for the Yanks tonight. Massive kudos on a great performance by the NYY bullpen.
Hi Joe. Hi Blake.
Wonderful night for the pinstripes. They’ve been playing wonderful baseball this season.
And they’ve been playing wonderful baseball while being supported by young players developing and stepping into key roles.
It’s been great to watch.
And that’s going to get even better very shortly and then into the next two years.
Trisha is using 2 names tonight lol yanks4ever and her real name lol
Best thing is AJ won’t be pitching vs Sox,so we have a great chance to win…
All is well with the universe. Logan was critically magnificent, Sori coming through, rest is just automatic….all these makes mine heart sing…thanks all and good night!
Inspiring win!
8 straight.
trisha’s back?
You can say what you want about Girardi and his binder but by this time of the year, he always has the bullpen straightened out. Now let’s make sure we drive home the advantage tomorrow.
CB,
Hi, what did you think of the deadline deals/non deals? Sure looking like a good move to keep Nova and the kids right now.
Jacob Ruppert August 5th, 2011 at 10:52 pm
Trisha is using 2 names tonight lol yanks4ever and her real name lol
I doubt this is a regular Lohud poster – The same screen name has been posting nonsense on the Boston Herald for a couple weeks.
Nunez really handled that atmosphere well tonight. That can’t be easy for a rookie. Working walks? Impressive.
yes mick. trisha has been posting as yanks4ever and now used her regular name in this thread. welcome back trisha, both of your names lol
And there looks like there is more help on the way. Great major league club, great minor league system. exciting time to be a yanks fan.
Great and right move pulling Colon.
He was at 94 pitches and struggling.
Agon was Logan’s man and he got em 1-2-3.
Decisive move by Joe.
G. Love,
Yea I didn’t like him pulling Colon either for Logan in the moment…..but it was clear Colon was tiring and that’s what Logan is for I guess…..that move could have very well saved the game for the Yanks.
I completely forgot about Jimenez pitching tonight. Thanks, Trader, for the update. Not exactly dominant. As opposed to Ivan Nova. That “trade” might be one of the better ones that never happened.
yes mick. trisha has been posting as yanks4ever and now used her regular name in this thread. welcome back trisha, both of your names lol
where’s betty?
Trader-
Who would have thought that was possible after that excellent 1 inning outing the day of the trade deadline?
Thats a great picture at the top of the page. Eduardo really did a good job breaking up that DP.
You doubt I am a regular poster? Search my name, I have posted here for years
cb-
what i like is the yankees management showing some patience and sticking with situations that don’t on the surface make sense like having nova and hughes in the rotation at the same time.
so it’s uncomfortable. i also think bringing montero up will create a situation that all the parts won’t necessarily fit, but i think will give the team a boost.
Wang IS Taiwan August 5th, 2011 at 10:54 pm
Nunez was the sparkplug of the 6th inning rally, very impresive in deed Wang, i hope he keeps it up!!
I thought, at the time, that Joe was moving at the right time. Colon clearly was losing control of the game, and facing key LH batters is what Logan is there for. You couldn’t have asked for more from Logan there. He was the player of the game, IMO.
Anybody know how many saves Mo needs to tie Hoffman?? I’m guessing around 12 more??
I watched a good bit of Ubaldo pitching….he wasn’t very sharp at all, we’ll see how he does when he settles in…..but there was no way he was worth all they were asking for him.
It was definitely the right move. It felt right at the time.
my gut said yes.
Montero 1-3 with 2 walks tonight….the hit was a line drive back up the middle. I watched 4 of his AB’s tonight and he looks really good at the plate right now….getting close to locked in I think.
mainesoxfan, thanks for the information.
Apparently “Jacob Ruppert” is none other than CR*9.
Posting nothing but nonsense on the Boston Herald all week? CR*9s fingerprints all over it.
His stupidity and transparency are legend. What a tool.
phil to pen?
don’t have a hen.
Blake, G Love,
The move was the right one…..scary i know, but if you have a loogy that’s the moment to use it, probably if Logan wasn’t pitching like he has in the past three weeks, probably he doesn’t call him up in that situation, brilliant move.
blake – you know – and I’M clearly guessing here – that with the decreasing velocity and effectiveness, and Colorado’s refusal to let him take that MRI – I wonder if he’s having shoulder problems. I know MRIs can show things even on asymptomatic patients, and pitchers are likely to have wear and tear. But, I wonder.
http://www.baseball-reference......reer.shtml
Hoffman: 601
Mo: 587 (but does that include tonight’s game?)
That’s 14.
I do not know where Betsy is mick. I’d like her take on Hughes pitching last time out and if she thinks Hughes can sustain it.
Jorge Vazquez had a” Monstero” night- 2 for 5 ,double, homer, 5 rbi’s
The Yankees have gotten more out of Boone Logan than they ever got out of Javy Vazquez. Its crazy that the throw-in guy has turned out better than the main character in such a trade.
oh yeah – lol.
jackass.
I was flipping out when he pulled Colon. It was a gutsy move and it paid off.
Such a great win. Our pen was sensational. I’m still buzzing over here.
“My confidence was up through the ceiling” (when AGON swung through his slider). He then struck him out.
Logan’s quote
Great night!
Nice to see Trisha and CB stop by.
I have posted here for years trisha. I was in your fantasy football last year. It’s me Carlos. Congratulations on winning the league
Blake,
I would not have traded for Ubaldo given the price. I’ve watched him pitch a lot both this year and over his career. He just doesn’t look right.
There’s something going on with him. Perhaps it’s temporary. But he’s not throwing the baseball the way he used to.
And the whole way the Rockies handled that situation struck me as highly concerning. You just don’t all of a sudden decide to trade Ubaldo Jimenez unless there’s a reason. And I don’t buy that whole convoluted he’s upset about Tulo and Gonzalez getting extended/he’s closed out the pitching coach/he’s out of shape nonsense. The Rockies became very intent on trading the kind of player that franchises search years to find. I don’t buy it.
And the thing with Ubaldo is that he’s pretty over the top. And his fastball can flatten out. It’s very common for guys who throw that hard to straighten out just due to the speed the ball travels – the fastball gets real straight due to how hard it’s thrown. Verlander can get like this as well.
And with Ubaldo losing a few ticks off this fastball – if it’s straight – he’s vulnerable to getting hit.
And for the Yanks trading for a back end guy wasn’t going to be of particular use.
A lefty reliever would have been nice – but they are always so over priced and I’m still hopeful that Romero may have something left (though not getting the call for this series does not speak well for him).
So on the whole I thought it was prudent to hold. There’s no way I would have traded Montero or Manny for Ubaldo given how he’s throwing. And I would not have been eager to give up a huge package based on Nova and Betances, etc. given the uncertainty in Ubaldo’s arm.
I’m happy they didn’t make a rash move.
And it’s now definitely time to call up Montero. I’ve been watching his games in Scranton – he back and he’s ready.
Good to see Trisha coming here to acknowledge how wrong she was in April about the Red Sux and especially about Ellsbury. A positively heroic crow munch.
Listening to Logan’s postgame…. I figured Ginzalez was going to be looking for a first pitch off speed so I threw a fastball and he was looking off speed……..he had a plan.
Hey Tar!!!!!
What a night, hey my sweet friend?????
Yahoo!!!!!
Soriano needs his own post game report. That man lights up a room.
G. Love,
You and me both. But for once (that’s only my impression after all the moves I’ve watched that didn’t work out), Girardi’s move paid off.
luis,
yup, it was the right move…that’s why Joe makes the big bucks I guess.
Joe,
yea the whole thing was very shady. They showed some tape on MLB network earlier today of him last year vs. early this year vs more recently this year and the differences are pretty stark. He looks closer to last year now than he didn’t earlier but he’s still not finishing his pitches and look even a little tentative throwing the ball at times…like he’s afraid something isn’t right. I wanted him…..but not at the price they were asking and really not at all after they were being so protective of his medicals.
as someone said, this could be the rubber game of series.
Trader, Tar,
Thanks! How are you guys? Hope things are well. Glad to see both of you are still here! Great game.
“Good to see Trisha coming here to acknowledge how wrong she was in April about the Red Sux and especially about Ellsbury. A positively heroic crow munch.”
As always, you have your wires crossed.
trisha predicted at the beginning of the year that Ellsbury would lead off for the Red Sox all year. she was correct. Ellsbury is having an mvp season.
soriano was effortless tonight
maybe he likes the 7th inning role
less pressure
CB,
agreed, as I said they showed some tape earlier and the differences in his delivery are noticeable….also agree on Montero….he looks ready to go to me to.
Joe-
Hughes had a clean MRI, but still had inflammation dx as the reason for his drop in velocity. Could be the same for Jimenez. Also he’s thrown a lot of pitches, 120 in 6&1/3rd against the braves, followed by 101 in 5 innings against Phoenix, and 108 in 5 innings tonight
Carlos? Well hell, why accuse me of being two people? I came here right after the Yanks win, not before!
“trisha predicted at the beginning of the year that Ellsbury would lead off for the Red Sox all year. she was correct. Ellsbury is having an mvp season.”
There ya go!
this could be the last time we see posada and jones in the same lineup
montero is the dh in waiting
Carlos, will you be joining the league again this season?
How about you celebrate the win instead of picking each other apart tonight?
CB-
Winning lately has made the site more user friendly. Less contentinous and name calling during games.
Please don’t be a stranger!
I think many of us shared some concern about Jimenez. I admit, I would have dealt Betances for him, but not the price Colo. was demanding. If he continues to have problems, I give credit to Cash and Billy Eppler and the scouts for a good evaluatoin, and not just relying on reputation and hype.
Recent big developments for the Yankees.
-Getting Chavez back
-Hughes having a great outing and showcases a hard biting breaking ball
-Nova with maybe his best start ever and showcasing the slider he’s been working on
-Soriano back and has looked good.
-Jeter swinging the bat better
-Logan pitching better with the new arm angle
Great win
Hi Trader, Hi G. Love!
. . . and all the complimentary things you said about Ellsbury – and how the Sux were done in April. Delicious crow.
Its me Carlos. you killed us the in the football league. I wasnt accusing like it was a bad thing. I recognized your writing and thought its funny lol. cant wait for fantasy football this year. Will you take it easy on us this time around lol
great win tonite. I’m very pumped. It’s gonna be hard to fall asleep!
“so it’s uncomfortable. i also think bringing montero up will create a situation that all the parts won’t necessarily fit, but i think will give the team a boost.”
randy,
How are you? It’s going to be a good night on the Cape!
You’re right. It is uncomfortable and strange – especially for the Yankees. It’s not clear how the parts fit. Getting younger and creating a new generation of Yankees isn’t something the franchise or the fanbase has any experience with. There’s no road map or blue print. It’s trial and error.
Take this issue with the 6 man rotation. I personally don’t really get it. So many yankee fans wanted to trade for Ubaldo because they didn’t believe that Colon and Garcia were good bets to hold out.
And that’s a reasonable position – especially with Colon (Freddy will be fine IMO). Colon really is a concern. I do not want him throwing 175 innings.
The yankee goal is to win the world series. And to do that they need Colon to be strong and throwing well.
So somehow getting Ubaldo as a way of mitigating risk associated with Colon was a good plan but now that the yanks may have 6 quality arms it’s a problem?
Maybe the parts don’t fit but this gives them a chance to skip Colon – and yes even skip CC so that he doesn’t hit 250 innings.
The yanks may have internally what everyone was hoping they’d trade for – another arm to stratify risk.
And on Montero – he’s so special. He really is. There’s no guarantees on any prospect – but his swing is just mind boggling. And he’s learning to lay off the soft junk away that was giving him problems earlier in the season.
Two nights ago – when he hit that mammoth home run. I was watched the game. Matthiessen the opposing pitcher was sitting 95+. Huge arm. Huge fastball. He struck Russo out on a 98mph fastball before montero got up.
And montero saw around 7 pitches. Laid off stuff away. And I don’t know how he did it – but he had the unreal bat speed as a 21 year old to turn one of those high 90 fastballs into a 450 foot moon shot.
Just amazing.
And what can you say about Manny. He was so, so good in that first AAA game. He’s has a chance to be very special.
I really like the direction the team is going in as long as they don’t do something rash and foolish.
“How about you celebrate the win instead of picking each other apart tonight?”
g. love-
this yankee team is in a transition year and it brings out a lot of opposing views.
the thing i like is theres an interesting balance between really young and really “experienced” players. the veterans passing on the torch could make this a very interesting team as it goes into the post season.
Yanks are on a 101 win pace and have a +174 run differential….which is nearly 40 points better than the Sox who are 2nd.
When are the Red Sox going to run away with the division again?
Carlos, actually I’m not the other poster you accused me of being. And the only thing that got me here tonight was the thrill of victory!
I said the Sux wouldn’t be sh*t – and they won’t. I know anxious little Sux-loving rodents from the west coast can’t see beyond their noses – but luckily I can.
I’m not going to play fantasy football this season. That was a totally lucky win, and I know it. I lucked on in the lottery and got really good players because of it. That can’t happen twice. I’m going out on top.
yanks sure looked like the better team tonight
our bullpen dwarfs theirs
our lineup is deeper
as is our staff
may the better team win
“this yankee team is in a transition year and it brings out a lot of opposing views.”
I like that. The fact that we are in transition year and in first place bodes very well for this year and the future.
“Good to see you Trisha – it’s not a Red Sox series here w/o you!”
Thank you for saying that, G. Love!!! As you can imagine, my greatest adrenaline rushes of the season come when we play the beantown pretenders. And that’s when I really want to be around my lohud peeps.
sorry trisha, i am mistaken. lol about football. dont take credit away from yourself. getting the first pick in the draft does not mean anything. you made all the right moves, congratulations, you deserve the credit.
“yanks sure looked like the better team tonight
From your lips…
Blake-
Let me add to your recent big developments:
Hughes regaining the high hard one .
Pitchers not issuing free passes.
Agressiveness on the basepaths.
Successful use of the bunt.
Lineup changes have helped to maximize run production.
Good to see you too Trisha. Hope all is well with you.
“And on Montero – he’s so special. He really is. There’s no guarantees on any prospect – but his swing is just mind boggling. And he’s learning to lay off the soft junk away that was giving him problems earlier in the season.”
Randy and I were talking about his bat speed the other night…..his swing really is golden, he swings so hard but has that rare ability to swing hard and stay balanced and he really is pretty flat and level for a power guy. Parts of his swing remind me of Pujols
once montero arrives jones will be released
tonights running gaffe sealed his fate
no room for mental errors on a potential championship team
lovin phil being available for sunday
it’s his turn that day and he really was pencilled in as #2 this year
if freddy has a tummy ache
Yeah the lack of walks has been tremendous. No coincidence that all our pitchers (sans AJ) are doing so well, at the same time they are on this crazy no walk streak.
All that’s needed is SJ ….
what about doreen?
Pat M, my angel friend!!!
Maybe we can find SJ! I’m going to email to see if he’s anywhere in site.
So nice to be around our good friends on such a happy occasion! The good ‘ole days!
CB,
one other thing….gotta ask what you thought of the Rasmus deal? I thought Anthopolis might as well have worn a ski mask when he robbed the Cards…..for what they were wanting (big league players to try and win now) I’m not sure the Yanks could have matched up….but should they have tried?
“once montero arrives jones will be released”
eh….I don’t know. He’s actually been better lately and the rosters are about to expand soon….they probably will just keep him.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you your 2011 world class flops. The vaunted Sux.
“what about doreen?”
Don’t forget Elmo and Erica.
Gotta think Rothschild has been a major factor in reducing the walks by the entire staff – last year they really struggled with walks especially to the 8 and 9 hitters in lineups. Glad he signed for 3 years!!
who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?
“he swings so hard but has that rare ability to swing hard and stay balanced and he really is pretty flat and level for a power guy. Parts of his swing remind me of Pujols”
blake,
Great description. He has one of those great – and very rare – controlled fur swing.
He’s stays in the zone so long and stays level so well – those things are reminiscent of Pujols and Frank Thomas.
But his swing is even more explosive and violent then there’s is.
2-3 years ago here during one of those endless trade Cano for Kemp discussions I was making some remarks about Matt Kemp with Pat M. We both loved him. And one of things I was saying is that Matt Kemp has a chance to be one of the 10 best players in baseball because of how much bat speed he has and how good his swing was. Anyway many people thought that was crazy – Kemp’s a lazy bum, etc. etc.
It’s not surprising to see what he’s doing now. It was a matter of time. His swing was just so good.
Montero’s swing reminds me of Matt Kemp’s.
cb-
good to see you here. things are good on the cape, and tomorrow will be a very nice morning.
i’m enjoying this season too as you are. i see it as a transition and while there are growing pains there is way more good than bad and i agree the future is looking good.
i had no interest in the yankees trading for jimenez. from the first time i saw montero, i’ve been waiting to see him be the next big thing for the yankees.
i hoping that begins in the next few weeks.
I am afraid of a big bad wolf
“Montero’s swing reminds me of Matt Kemp’s.”
what’s scary is that the Yankees could have both of them plus Cano in the same lineup by 2013….we’ll see but if Kemp hits the market the Yanks have to put the full court press on
Pat M.,
How are you? Hope things are well. Great game tonight. This is a very interesting Yankees team.
As Randy said – they are clearly in transition. But despite that they are still on a 100 win pace and in first place in August. That’s quite an accomplishment.
No idea why so many yankee fans are so angry and small minded about baseball all of the time. Even after a great win they are so sad they can’t let their bitterness go.
I didn’t watch the game tonight (I was out having a good time) but it’s nice to see the Yankees win one with the strength of the bullpen, particularly when Logan and Soriano, who have been endlessly criticized this season on this and other blogs, come through in tough situations.
The Yankees have the deepest and most talented bullpen in baseball along with position players who never quit, they are going to be really tough to beat down the stretch and in the playoffs with the added strength of Chavez, Hughes, Arod, and Soriano all coming back on or near the trade deadline.
You know, some posters are still very leery about coming back here because they don’t totally trust this is psycho free and nobody wants to take any chances. I can’t say that I blame them, though I wish things were different.
I on the other hand just couldn’t miss this opportunity. I knew this was coming and what a better time for it to happen then with us playing those bums!
Beating Lester is great but Beckett’s my white whale. I can’t stand that a-hole.
pat m-
tricia missed me.
i knew she’d be back
bgi win. broke the losing streak to the sux. put that baby to bed.
rothschild is a genius except with AJ the hillbbilly. so the yanks defered any pitching decision… do not want to mess with the mental case(AJ”S) head…
they are playing with 3 position players… just send down noesi if you are not going to bite the bullet.. when arod comes back you are losing 1 pitcher also.
i assume montero will not be up until 9-1, andruw has been OK against lefties atthis point with 25 days to go they will not DFA him…….
I’m sure jerkface and I still stand by what we said. A little foolish for you to be visiting that at this point in the season. (not surprising, but still a little foolish.)
Man, it’s good to see the old crew in here tonight.
mick…..The secret service would need to be here 24 /7 for Erica & Doreen to return
pat m…yeah, they have gone underground…
“one other thing….gotta ask what you thought of the Rasmus deal? I thought Anthopolis might as well have worn a ski mask when he robbed the Cards….”
blake,
This was the deal were a small piece of me really felt a sharp stab. I don’t know how – but the yankees absolutely should have trade for Rasmus.
I can’t believe how dumb the cards are. What an absolute heist by Anthoupolus. I can’t even believe he had the audacity to suggest that grab bag of nothing for Rasmus.
Maybe there wasn’t a fit. But I really wanted the yankees to get that player. He has so much talent. And his pull power from the left side is massive.
He just needed to get out of St. Louis and away from LaRussa.
Toronto is turning into quite a franchise. Not what we were hoping to see.
But yeah. That was a deal I really wanted the yankees to make. Back around a month ago or so Rasmus’ dad made a public comment to the effect that he didn’t see Coby staying in St. Louis long term. I knew they were going to deal him then.
He’s one that got away. And he went to a division rival.
This winter – time to back the truck up and see if you can tempt Kevin Towers. That’s the player to go and get.
i had no interest in the yankees trading for jimenez. from the first time i saw montero, i’ve been waiting to see him be the next big thing for the yankees
——————————————
Randy-
Feel the same way. As a kid idolizing Mickey Mantle, I can’t wait for Montero to come up as a Yankee, perhaps the best power hitter the Yanks have developed in the last 50 years.
I don’t count Alfonso Soriano, who was signed straight out of Japan and didn’t spend time in the Yankees minor league system.
Tar August 5th, 2011 at 11:33 pm
WCYF. Crying out for attention again and again, I see. You are pitiful. I hope Chad takes note of your 11:27 post and See’s it for what it is.
Oh really? You mean my baseball commentary revealing how poor some posters predictions were? The same posters that regularly insulted others for being realistic in their baseball analysis?
randy – not entirely.
tar – so I see things haven’t changed here. Can you imagine the degree of pathetic it takes to save posts in the hopes that you can pull them out at some point and beast your chest? nitwitia probably salivates and prays every single night that he can go through his twenty-five volumes of saved posts in the hopes of proving someone wrong.
Quel losere!
Jeers,
A Yankee win is always satisfying but a Yankee win against Beckett is sublime.
There is nothing I’d rather see than this team bash him at this point in the season. Gammons is oiling up for his “why Josh Beckett is Cy Young” piece. He’s running spell check on it right now.
If we smack that goon around this weekend we put a definite dent in the Red Sox propaganda machine although as Gammons will tell you they are the best 2nd place team in baseball!
No saving necessary brainchild. A simple Google search is all it takes. You insulted others here routinely who pointed out to you that hating the Sux and being realistic as to how good a team they are were did not make anyone less of a Yankee fan.
CC has something to prove to the Sox tomorrow….I expect him to be on his A game.
Blake and CB-
Had the Yankees traded for Rasmus, it might have cost them Nova, as the Cardinals were looking for a major league ready pitcher.Rasmus incidentally hasn’t been hitting much with the Jays-no homers and only 3 RBI’s in some 35 or more ab’s
Anyone think the Yanks might pull an EL Duque with Colon and DL him for a month to get him ready for the playoffs?
West Coast,
Who cares about predictions we make earlier in the season? Way more than half the predictions I make are wrong. I was sure the Yankees were gonna capitulate to the Rockies demands for Ubaldo. I would have bet money on it.
Although I do remember making some Nova predictions early in the season that have turned out well, lol.
The satisfaction you get from the need to be right and rub something in someone’s face is pretty fleeting.
The Yankees won tonight. They beat Boston in a great game. You think anyone cares that their predictions were off?
“what’s scary is that the Yankees could have both of them plus Cano in the same lineup by 2013….we’ll see but if Kemp hits the market the Yanks have to put the full court press on”
blake,
Just a guess – but if Cashman stays I have a feeling that the yankees will hold their cards over the next year and then pounce in 2013 like they did before 2009.
Kemp and Hamels – those are the guys I think they’ll target.
They’ll try to figure things out until then through internal solutions. They’ll make trades and sign players but I do think they are going to look to that winter. Kemp is not going to sign with the Dodgers and I don’t think the Phillies can afford another huge deal.
This could change if Felix or Justin Upton are really put on the market. But I think Cashman will really go all out on Kemp and Hamels.
If those two have strong years next year – the yankees are going to throw enormous amounts of money at them.
CB,
Thanks. Totally agree on both Rasmus and Upton if Cash can talk his buddy KT in to it.
Nothing to do with me G. Love. It has everything to do with how personally rude, dismissive and arrogant she was to many others who pointed out a slow start did not mean a hill mof beans. I’m wrong all the time, I don’t care about that.
“Feel the same way. As a kid idolizing Mickey Mantle, I can’t wait for Montero to come up as a Yankee, perhaps the best power hitter the Yanks have developed in the last 50 years.”
yankee trader-
i have a very good feeling about montero. i also am not worried about his catching. yes he has a slow lower body, but he has a very quick upper body. he played a different position , but graig nettles had a slow lower body and a very quick upper body. nettles became a defensive wizard over time with hard work. montero can with a similar work ethic be at least an average defensive catcher and a superstar hitter.
montero’s getting close. i think we can all feel it.
CB,
Philly has a bunch of money coming off the books. I would be shocked if they let Hamels walk.
“The satisfaction you get from the need to be right and rub something in someone’s face is pretty fleeting.’
That’s his calling card. His big cry for attention, look at me LoHud. Go see a shrink already.
Dismissed troll. Go back to the DN.
That should defuse the Red Sox Mystique & the Lester Mystique for a while.
why can’t we all get along?
CB…..Matt Kemp has finally realized how to play the game of baseball, what an immense talent
tar – what are you seeing is a classic case of deflection. The west coast sux fan is so bereft based on his favorite team slothing into second place that he is lashing out all over the place in an attempt to elevate their status by saying others were wrong calling them the trashbags they are!
Anyway, bronx jeers has acknowledged my perspicacity, so what else do we need! Right bronx?
Gee but it’s great to be back home.
West Coast Yankee Fan,
She was obnoxious to me as well. Called me a Sox fan because I thought they would win the division and we would get the wild card
Rasmus since trade:
7 for 34
5 rbi’s
1 xbh-double
7 strikeouts
1 walk
‘montero’s getting close. i think we can all feel it.”
The only thing that concerns me is.. I am afraid that may be it for Po. I really want him to go out a winner.
I just hope we bring Montero up soon and they stop treating him like a china doll they are holding for a trade.
If he starts to hit when he comes up and produces, he is no longer a prospect to deal in the big deals. He’s a Yankee. There’s a difference.
“This could change if Felix or Justin Upton are really put on the market. But I think Cashman will really go all out on Kemp and Hamels.”
Sounds like a plan…..for me it would all depend on what it would take to acquire Upton and whether that price would be too much considering Kemp could be signed as a FA….Upton does have a great contract though…..also agree on targeting Hamels. CC, Hamels, and Banuelos in the same rotation sounds good.
“It has everything to do with how personally rude, dismissive and arrogant she was to many others who pointed out a slow start did not mean a hill mof beans.”
This is just lovely. YOU WERE THE ONLY RETREAD WHO PANTED AT THEIR FEET!
They suck, and frankly my dear, so do you.
But who’s counting!
nothing like freedom of speech.
WCYT being put in his rightful place, start the count down to a Vineyard Yankee post in 5…4…3….2……1……..
Is Philly going to have three 20 million dollar pitchers?
Trader, real small sample on Rasmus…..he’s probably getting used to speaking Canada
“She was obnoxious to me as well. Called me a Sox fan because I thought they would win the division and we would get the wild card”
Prove it! I don’t remember calling you a Sox fan. If anything, I would have called you a Sux fan! I don’t mind owning it if I did it. But I would need to see the proof of that one, Triple.
blake,
Did you see Manny’s first start in AAA? If so what did you think?
I was so impressed. The way he worked both sides of the plate, changed eye levels and mixed pitches up to set up hitters is just unreal for a 20 year old. He throws the ball so well – especially for a left hander. And he’s got great intelligence and moxie out there. He’s a kid you want out on the bump in big spots.
His curve ball can bet loose and loopy but that will get better. That fastball from the left side is just outstanding.
He’s going to get called up as a second lefty for the post season. He can dominate left handed hitters out of the pen with that fastball alone.
“WCYT being put in his rightful place, start the count down to a Vineyard Yankee post in 5…4…3….2……1……..”
Hi MG!
Where’s bojo when I need him!
Cashman was on the radio the other day and it was obvious from what he said that Montero will be up here soon. The question is will it be in soon or will they wait until the last day of August so he could still be on the post season roster. I have a feeling it will be after the Rays series against the Royals on the road. It will be exciting to watch him when he finally gets here.
Blake and CB-
I see where the Marlins are trying to lock up Mike Stanton.
Brian Bruney was DFA
“Philly has a bunch of money coming off the books. I would be shocked if they let Hamels walk.”
Triple,
It’s not even the total money. It’s where resources are allocated. Give hamels a huge deal and they have so much tied into their rotation. That’s 70M on 3 pitchers. That’s a huge amount of risk to be carrying.
I don’t even think the yankees would be thrilled adding a third pitcher with that kind of deal.
And Hamels has had some arm problems in the past.
As far as I know Philly hasn’t gotten much traction trying to extend him. And that should have happened by now.
We’ll see. Amaro is hard to predict. But that’s a tough sell to ownership. And tough to build a team when you have 4 players making close to 100M long term each year.
Blake
Thinking about Hamels and that rough year he had ( 2009
) any idea what that was all about? I know he’s bounced back– it’s seems to be just another example of why we should just stay positive about Phil.
it will be interesting to see how the Yankees handle the roster as the season winds down and the way it is structured in the playoffs.
If I’m running the team (I’m not) the pitching staff is probably capped at 10 or 11 (you don’t need depth in a short series, particularly when you can make changes in between rounds) and have Montero available off the bench plus another position player as well, probably another outfielder.
If Banuelos is a second lefty in the ‘pen who do you leave out, Noesi? Ayala? Wade seems to have earned a spot, he’s been outstanding and Burnett may not make the post season roster for the 1st round if he continues to struggle.
Girardi started the game off poorly with Posada at DH and Jones in LF.
He saved the day with the quick hook on Colon though. I did not agree at the time, nor did I think it wise to bring in Soriano, but both moves worked out well.
The CC vs Lackey matchup has reverse lock written all over it. Lets see if CC can overcome his struggles against the Red Sox and pitch well. Yankees may have caught the Red Sox at a good time. Their bats have been Red hot for almost 2 months and they were due to cool off.
“Matt Kemp has finally realized how to play the game of baseball, what an immense talent”
Pat M.,
It really was only a matter of time. I remember those conversations well. He started playing serious ball so late in life. People just didn’t seem to understand what a big issue that is.
And he always had bat speed falling out of his pockets. Just immense ability to get directly to the ball and do so with fury.
I’m hoping he’s going to be a yankee in 2013.
Blake-
Would you have been willing to trade Nova for Rasmus as the Cardinals wanted a major league ready pitcher? Then what, don’t pick up Swishers option in the offseason. Rasmus wasn’t a necessity. The OF is set for one more year, and then Kemp.
BJ Upton will be locked up, and if not Towers, will likely want Banuelos and/or Montero
CB,
I just saw his last inning….his stuff just jumps out at you when you see him. He was throwing the ball by guys in fastball counts which you always like to see. We talked about this before but I love the plane he gets from a guy his size…..he really throws down the hill. I think the command will come back around…..he’s special
The staff will be crowded for the playoffs, no doubt.
Likely casualties will come from the starters, just too many for postseason.
Most don’t translate well to the pen, which is already deep.
Will be interesting. 2 starters could go.
Soriano is an outstanding reliever, it’s entirely possible he was trying to pitch through pain the entire first month of the season until he went on the DL.
You don’t go from AL league leader in saves to a bum over a winter without an injury unless you are Sparky Lyle (Cy Young to Sayonara)…
Well gang, it was sweet seeing you all! (and you have my sympathy that you are obviously still having to deal with the malaise and pestilence that manages to keep the forum reeking.) I know I will need my fix in the next two days when the trashbags of the northeast descend deeper and deeper into the pits of the hell they will rightfully end up occupying!
Night all!
“Soriano is an outstanding reliever, it’s entirely possible he was trying to pitch through pain the entire first month of the season until he went on the DL.
Absolute amen to that!
It’s always good to see you trish. Good night.
Trader,
Stanton is just awesome. The bat is a toothpick in his hands. Signing him long term to play in that new stadium has to be that franchise’s foremost priority.
Just an amazing talent. And the crazy thing is that the marlins may not even be playing him in the right position. There’s a good chance he can play CF. He’s athletic enough. Personally I would play him in CF for a long period of time until he proves he can’t do it.
That bat at CF would be something else.
CB……Amaro is going to have an old club on his hands in a few years with a barren farm system so I too can see him not resigning Cole, in fact it wouldn’t surprise me to see him being moved this winter…….Tar, Cole Hamels went through in 09 what many young pitchers go thru after a sizable jump in innings the season before as you well know…..I still say this is what is what ails Hughes
Tar,
From what I’ve heard/read….he changed some of his work habits and approach for the better…..as you say it’s not unheard of for young pitchers to struggle then rebound and improve.
Trader,
Yea….I would have traded Nova for Rasmus then pick up Swishers option and either shop him or just bring him back as a DH/4th outfielder…..it didn’t happen and it’s water under the bridge now. I’m happy just the same to have the farm and their young players intact
blake, I really haven’t seen Rasmus play but it’s easier to pick up an outfielder than starting pitcher, I’m not sure I’d have given up Nova at this point in time.
We can agree that Cashman and his staff have done an outstanding job of restocking the farm system and bringing a true long term development approach to the Yankees once again.
Major brawl in the Phillies SF game
CB-
That’s exactly why I would have hated to trade Montero for Ubaldo Jimenez. Montero IMO should only be trade bait for another young stud hitter who would fill a position of need.
Ther currently are only 3 pitchers I’d include Montero in a trade for-kershaw, verlander and Hernandez.
Fight in SF with Phillies. Victorino hit, benches erupt. surrounded by Giants
Pat M, what did you think of Hughes’ stuff the other night? I had lunch today with a friend who played in the Braves farm system in the ’80s and has coached at a fairly high level, his comment was that his fastball was finishing for the 1st time this year. He was also amazed by the movement on Noesi’s pitches.
MG,
Yea given Nova’s last start…that would make it tough…..but Rasmus is 24 and he’s really talented….I’m fine with still having Ivan and the rest of the kids though.
Gotta go to bed now…..great win and great chatting tonight
blake,
I think our collective perceived value of Ivan Nova pre-deadline and post-deadline are 2 very different things.
The Yankees demoting him to AAA when they did really slammed his value in the league in my eyes.
I don’t think they will make that mistake again.
But yes, I would have dealt Betances, Nova, Romine, etc. for Ubaldo last weekend. For me, Montero and Banuelos were the pieces we couldn’t deal. I’d add Nova to that list now. I want this guy in our rotation for a long time.
my friend’s other comment about AJ was that his arm slot is back to where it was last year and that it is really tough to sustain a change like that over the entire course of the season because of the muscle memory dating back to childhood.
tar, actually it’s too bad that I couldn’t come back and celebrate with my friends without having to be accosted by classic malcontents.
night for real.
XOX
Goodnight all also. Catch you Blake in the morning.
Great win tonight beating Boston in their home park. Textbook with Soriano, Robertson and Mariano shutting them down and closing them out. Felt like a playoff game in August.
Hughes is going through the same exact thing Hamels did in ’09 when he was terrible. The jump in innings ate away his arm strength and it took him a long time to come back.
But Hamels got even better – he continued refining his breaking stuff and that gave him the tool he needed to complement his change up and fastball.
Hughes looked terrific the other night. Really liked the tight power curve ball he threw. Was very surprised when he struck out Dunn on that back door power curve and Pyrzinski on what looked like a cutter but turned out to be a curve.
People shouldn’t dismiss Hughes on what’s happened this season. It’s not that unusual.
If they get a chance two years from now the yankees will drop 150M on a pitcher who just went through the exact same problem.
There hasn’t been much hand wringing over Girardi this season.
Nunez had a good game tonight. The Sox got a break with no Arod but the kid got on base 3 times and made a nice catch on the foul pop.
Thanks CB and blake
I thought there might be a correlation between the two.
I’m out as well. Good night all.
Bronx Jeers -
I missed most of the game earlier so I’m watching the replay now. Very nice bunt by Nunez in the 3rd inning.
And then the almost pick-off shows he’s still young and learning. But I love his speed!
And I love that he can bunt!
While Yanks are the team to beat, the Red Sox are a team that deserves great respect. They have 3 MVP candidates at the top of the order and youth and speed along with the number 1 and 2 starters.
And then the take-out slide show me Nunez has already done some learning!
CB – What are your thoughts on Nova?
On the Red Sox feed, Orsillo and Remy made some not-so-veiled comments suggesting that Colon’s revival is the result of PED use.
And they happened to engage in this commentary when Mr. Milkshake was at the plate. Apparently Ortiz’s revival doesn’t strike them the same way.
Bottom of the second inning for those of you with the archive.
MG….There’s 2 things that I took away from the Hughes outing the other night….As CB already pointed out was his sharp breaking ball and the other was the late giddy-up on his fastball….It just exploded up in the zone as if it picked up a couple of feet right before entering the strike zone….I’m cautious on how many of these type of outings he can muster up going forward…..The key is getting his innings in without sustaining an injury and get ready for 2012…….He’s a real talent….I have come to see what GB has been reporting over the past few years about Noesi, he has better stuff than Nova….How that translate into a starter will be of great interest
Pat M,
Can i ask you a question?
Yes
Villa Nova-Ya ,
He played it cool in a big game and helped his team win. You can’t ask for more than that.
Can I relay some information about my self, that would clear my name for good. This getting really tiresome
I’m glad someone mentioned Nunez tonight. This is another player that is developing right before our eyes. He had some throwing problems early but it looks like the game has slowed down for him which is the largest step. Today, the patient at bats are another excellent sign.
The Yankees weathered the Jeter, Chavez, A Rod injuries easily due mostly to Nunez. He is a hell of a lot more than a utility IF. With the pending decline of Jeter and Rodriguez he will be ever more valuable. Cashman again, shows his foresight in refusing to include Nunez in trades earlier.
Nova, Noesi and Nunez, three extremely successful rookies and more to come. Times are good
Yanks78,
Nova is an interesting pitcher who is really developing nicely.
He has a great frame and a very good arm. His shortcoming is that he doesn’t have great arm action. It’s part of why he’s had trouble with his command. It gets a bit long at times and he also has the ball away from his body for a long period of time so there’s relatively little deception in how he throws (compare where he holds the ball through his delivery compared to CC).
So in that kind of situation, a pitcher has to make up for certain limitations in how he throws through his skills as a pitcher.
And that’s what we’re watching Nova do.
For me, the absolute key to Nova’s future is that slider/cutter. We first got a glimpse of it in that last start he threw in spring training. He just threw it almost out of nowhere. But it looked great.
He hasn’t really gone to it as much as I would have liked him to this season but that’s probably because he wanted to get comfortable with what he knew best (his curve and change) while he settled in his first year.
But that slider is dynamite. It’s a real plus pitch. It gives him that true out pitch he really needs. It transforms his game – and that’s what we saw against the white sox.
The yankees sent him down and told him to focus on that pitch. I’d guess that slider was always there but he just needed to get used to it.
With that slider Nova has a real chance to be a #2 caliber pitcher. It really changes what he can be in the game.
If he can maintain it he has a very big future.
But that slider is dynamite. It gives him a legitit
I worry that Phil’s going to have another big inning jump next season. He”ll be lucky to get to 85 this season.
Meanwhile CC is going to be near 240-250. With the postseason he’ll have pitched nearly 1,300 innings in 5 years.
Sorry to ask you this, but it’s really tiresome. I am Not that guy, i’m just to talk baseball, and why not make some friends. The info i relay is not secret so i don’t mind giving it away, but i’m sure it will help clear things out.
Just stick to baseball and let the other stuff play out…….You appear to try too hard in regards to that issue…..Time for all to move on and hopefully many of the old posters will return….I split as soon as I sense bs and this blog has taken some big hits in the past year……Move on Luis that’s my advice and in time if you are who you say you are then all will be fine
Luis,
For what it’s worth, I think that Pat gave you some good advice. Just ignore this nonsense, and it will go away in time. Your actions speak much more loudly than your words. By getting worked up over these accusations, you give your accusers power over you that they don’t deserve. At the end of the day, nobody has offered any proof.
Nice to see the pro Cashman comments here. On the other hand does the BS ever stop with the name calling, insults, identity issues and such. It is no wonder that posters here disappear or post in frequently. It’s like a nursery school here sometimes.
Girardi deserves a ton of credit for his management of the ‘pen tonight. Lifting Colon, and bringing in Logan to face AGon was the key to the game. Nic job, and great execution by Logan getting Agon to chase that slider…
Ghost……Joe Giradi had a very good game
I should post WCYF’s dismissive statements this offseason of Ivan Nova and my defending of Nova’s place in the rotation, but who is keeping score? The sox rebounded from a horrible start to being a good team, I’m glad WCYF always had his faith in them instead of in the Yankee prospects who will grow to make the Yankees great in the future. The sox will be at the end of the season where they were at the beginning, behind the Yankees.
